[Q] CM 7.1 low sound volume and a market that keeps freezing - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, for the past few weeks i've been using cm 7.1 on my i9100 and I'd be glad to say that the rom is perfect, if some issues didn't come up. Firstly, since the first day of use, i've realized that the sound volume (both from speaker and headset) is fairly low compared to samsung's rom (to be frank going above 50-60% in volume options doesn't make a difference). Is there any solution to this? CM 9 apart from the "known issues" got that bug too?
The second problem came up a few days ago and it's related to the android market app. Everytime you scroll through an app's details, the phone freezes and the only way to restore it, is to turn it off and on again. Currently, i'm using app brain which doesn't seem to have that problem, but i really love google's app. So, any solution to that?

Try the app in my sig to give the headset/headphone volume a boost, works really well & only distorts the volume at very high levels (>75% which you shouldn't need). There are apps on the Market which can boost the speaker volume, not sure how well these work as I haven't tried any.
So far as the Market is concerned, I use a CM based rom and have had that problem as well. The only fix I've come across/read about is to restore a much earlier version of the market (hopefully someone else reads this thread and has a fix that can help both of us ). I haven't done this myself as I've trained myself to do all my scrolling thru app details on my PC first & simply do the install/update on my phone without scrolling thru the details , but I'm sure a search on here should dig up something/the apk you need.

Ask in the right place may get an answer quicker .

Possible scheduler issue in 2.1 Roms

Hi,
I have an issue with the way 2.1 roms handle background processes. Using Cronos 1.4.1 at the moment but the issue is the same in every 2.1 rom I've tried. The issue is not there in 1.5 roms.
In the car I like to run Spotify and CoPilot at the same with Spotify in the background over A2DP. When I do this the music from Spotify starts breaking up and becomes unlistenable. I can fix this by turning off the screen but it starts again when the screen is turned back on. CoPilot isn't a huge amount of good without a screen so this is a pretty bad workaround. I wouldn't complain and just chalk it up to underpowered hardware but I never had this problem with the 1.5 roms.
I've tried overclocking but that doesnt help at all. At a guess I would say that the scheduler is effectively choking Spotify when it's got a another app in the foreground (it isn't just CoPilot that deprives Spotify but most programs that have constantly running processes i.e. games). Web browsing only breaks up the music during page loads.
Is there a way of telling the scheduler to give Spotify a greater or equal priority to foreground apps? Is this something that BFS will solve (or make worse). Is it possible the official kernel will make a difference?
Any help will be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Phil
PS: Apologies if this belongs in the general forum but I thought this is more of a development issue.
You can always try setting a `nice`/renice constant.
I have exactly the same issue with spotify, it seems to have very low priority, I don't know if this is a problem with the spotify app or the way in which android 2.1 deals with it but it does seem to be throttled to the point of stopping when you try and do anything else with your phone while running it.
It didn't appear to be an issue on any of the 1.5 roms and seems to be a lot worse on a Sense 2.1 rom (I don't know if that is because there are a lot more things running in the background)
I used a the "top" command within adb shell and could see that other process, some htc and some standard android were jumping up the cpu usage way higher than spotify and this seemed to cause the music to break up.
I really hope that if the official 2.1 version is released, whatever is causing the issue (sense, android or the spotify app) is fixed!
EDIT: for some reason, trying to load up web pages makes it stutter like crazy!
Hi,
adwinp: you clearly know more than I do. How would I go about setting that?
DarthOps: I'm glad that I'm not the only one that finds this frustrating. I'll check to see if the Music app behaves the same way or if it's just Spotify. If it's just Spotify then maybe it's worth raising a bug report with them. Have you tried it recently in a 1.5 rom? Wondering if the later versions of Spotify still behave fine in 1.5.
Cheers,
Phil
Hey.
I have the same issue with all 2.1 roms. I'm currently using cronos 1.4.1 and it's a bit better than with other roms.
I guess we'll have to wait for the official eclair release before raising a bug report
With 1.5 there's no problem.
I'm using app2sd, are you guys too ?
Yup, but I am pretty sure I've had the same issue using non app2sd roms. I'm trying that scheduler hack somebody put up on the forum, will post my results in a sec.
Update 1:
All the tests were done with Spotify over headphones and not A2DP. Going to test that on my way home in the car.
Spotify and Torque (OBD app that is constantly running and uses BT), saw a possible improvement in that it took a good half a minute before Spotify started breaking up but then it was as bad as before.
Spotify and CoPilot are playing nicely together in the office but the real issue is when the map updates (i.e. moving). Will test on my way home.
Spotify and web browsing: loaded bbc.co.uk and Spotify didn't stutter once.
Spotify and Frozen Bubble: No stutter at all during playing.
This could actually be a workable solution and is promising that maybe BFS based roms will work.
Could you give us some informations about how to do this hack ?

You have to edit your initrd (init.rc) and rebuild your boot.img
You have to find out the resource # of the process choking the system and reduce its nice, and upp the one being slow, for example.
The arguments of setrlimit: resource current max
Sorry, should have said. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=689829 has all the details.
Turn usb debugging on and open an adb shell to type in the commands from the post above or alternatively use the gscript method (didn't work for me on Cronos 1.4.1, the SU request FC on me).
adwinp: Wow, think that might well be beyond my capabilities. Is there any way to edit that in adb? Also it's not one program being "nasty" but rather Spotify being too "nice" .
Ok thanks a lot, I'm gonna give it a try
I find that I tend to get stutters when the phone changes between 2G and 3G connections too, I remember some Droid users reporting the same problem

Change your band to WCDMA only:
open dialer, and:
*#*#4636#*#*
Be sure you have good 3G coverage in your region first!
Unfortunately the scheduler hack doesn't fix this for me. Tried it in the car going home and still got lots of stutter when running CoPilot. Possibly a bit better than before. Tried with and without A2DP and it made no difference. Back to the drawing board I guess.

Are you going to raise a bug with Spotify?
Moved as not ROM Dev.
Just tried with the official release, it's worse than with cronos droid.
Back to cronos...

4 questions - 1 very important

1) Is honeycomb available for use, or are the available honeycombs not complete versions?
2) The important question: sometimes I mistakenly press the "+" volume button, and if it is the last tick or the one before it, the sound becomes extremely high that I'm afraid if this happened a lot my hearing will be really damaged. So, is there a way to re "tune" how much the volume goes up, or to limit the sound to some limit?
3) What should I do to get android apps to work on my NC? If I have to root it, what method should I follow?
4) Should I update from 1.01 to 1.1?

You will need to root to use apps. I use CM7 from emmc everything works great for me and if you need or want to go back to stock there are easy ways to do that. Just make sure you read install directions and follow them exactly.

1: Honeycomb is not ASOP from Google yet. The version currently running on the nook was ported from the emulator. It seems to work ok from what people are saying but its not full honeycomb.
2: not that i am aware of. I personally remapped those buttons to menu and back, and you could do the same and use an application to control volume.
3: You will need to root your device to unlock the full power.
4: this really depends on what you want to do. 1.1 adds a few bug fixes and the ability to use pinch to zoom in the stock webbrowser on the nook. If you root this using autonooter, you will get to keep the nook app that everyone seems to like, but you will be on eclair, which means no flash. You could wipe the device completely and install Nookie froyo (android 2.2) CM7 (android 2.3) or the honeycomb build mentioned above (android 3.0) Personally i really like what they have done with cm7 and they are constantly updating it. but really its your call. read the other forums on the exact steps to do any of this, its all well documented there.

I wish I had this problem! Are you using extremely efficient headphones? I can't get my NC to output audio at any level I would call loud!
My current solution is an external powered speaker & "Mymusicon" with the sub knob turned all the way up.
Cheers,
kev

use the overclocked kernel for a very nice volume increase (even if you don't overclock.)
Also the DSP manager app has a bass boost and EQ that can crank out volume if need be.

@john10101
@chisleu
Thank you
@bugeyed1
I have hearing loss in both ears (one more than the other,) and tho, as you can see, it is really too loud for me at the first tick or the one before it. They are called Brainwavz M1, I got them for 30-40 dollars.

[Q] Volume+ Issues

So after doing many hours of searching I truly believe I am the only person with this problem. If for some reason I have missed this problem already and it has been solved, I do apologize sincerely.
I just got a Samsung GS2 with AT&T, rooted it first thing, and flashed the UnNamed ROM. After having it for a few days now, the ringer volume and Alarm volume are too low for me to hear in my pocket. So upon doing a bit of digging, I came across an app called Volume+. I am sure many people know what this is and have recommended it to others with my same problem.
I say again, I have already installed this app!
However, after turning all the settings full blast, level 15 in most cases, there is no change in volume.
Reading more about the app, its SUGGESTED that I flash CM7 and remove the DSP Manager... but I don't want to do that. I don't care about removing the DSP Manager, but I happen to like the UnNamed ROM. Besides, they said they recommend the CM7 ROM but "should" work with others.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated here. I am new to this whole thing, but I do know Linux VERY well and I am not afraid to tinker with things I probably should't.
Thanks again.

i had this issue as well. Try this, go to applications/manage applications/ and clear the data in volume+, then, without opening it, reboot into recovery, wipe cache and dalvik cache, then reboot as normal, open volume+ and use these settings: speaker settings/check speaker modifications(leave virtual room unchecked/ then go to EQ settings, select "good quality"/then select 15 under volume level, leave everything else alone! let me know how it works out for you, cause i see a HUGE difference with this app, and i use it on all my ROMs, which is at least 15 if not more that ive flashed.

[Q] Which ROM to fix those problems?

Hello everybody. I'm a new one on this forum and have only basic knowledge about ROM's, so please be undestanding. I have installed the ICS with Cyanogen Mod, the newest update. I am happy with the new system, but there are a few problems which I would like to solve.
1. Volume mute - when I listen to music on Power Amp and an sms or call comes, the music mutes and doesn't come back to the volume after I answer the call/sms. I haven't found anything in settings to fix that, is there a solution?
2. Facebook sync - I can't synchronize the contacts from Facebook with the contacts on my phone. I click on "Facebook" in "Accounts" menu, turn the Fb on and nothing happens.
3. Multiple selection in contacts - I have to be completely blind or stupid, but I can't see the option of multiple selection in contacts anywhere. And it's disturbing, when I want to delete a few contacts at the same time, for example.
4. Battery life - the system sure runs smooth and nice, but requires a lot of power. I know that listening to music needs a lot of energy (and I listen to music on my phone very often), but when I had the previous Android version it was still consuming less energy. Now I have to charge the battery almost every day (previously every 3-2 days).
5. Music equalizers - they simply just don't work. Previously when I turned them on I heard a difference, now - none.
6. Youtube - previously I had a Youtube app and I could watch films in HQ. Is there a similar app for this system, some codecs, etc?
Yes, I know this doesn't look really professional, but I don't know how to solve those problems and I tried to explain everything in a simple way. So, is there a ROM that will fix those problems? I would really appreciate Your help.
Cheers, Kaja

CM9 Speaker Phone

Ok, I have been following the threads on the CM9 build and I have seen lots of questions and no real solutions. I'm running the latest 4.1 version of CM9 and still my speaker phone during phone calls is way low. I've tried the Volume+ app, which just removed all in-call sound... I've cleared and reloaded every combination mentioned in the thread. Is this not a major issue for anyone else? I absolutely love the ROM with this being the only problem, but a big one for me.
If I missed a real fix, please let me know!

In-call settings does nothing to volume. It only changes the amount of button pressed it takes to get from 0-100%.
You will have to wait for h0tw1r3 to fix the in-call volume
Sad to leave CM9...for now
Well, as much as I love the raw AOSP look and feel, the volume issue is a killer for me. I will be looking for updates, which address this issue directly. Other than the volume thing...general low volume and below average in-call and speaker phone the ROM is flawless.
For now, I'm going to jump back and run latest version from Flappjaxx.....also a damn fine ROM with full Spen support
Hope to see this CM9 ROM back on my phone soon!
thanks h0tw1r3
I am unable to post in other sections....Just wanted to say thanks for addressing the audio issue in ur latest build. Hopefully the chipset/driver issue will get resolved soon.
