[Q] Use of external microphone on Android [SOLVED] - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi..
I have a question on how to get a external microphone to work on my Galaxy Nexus.
For further detail see my full description here:

Tried to ask in the Galaxy Nexus forum, but no one answered me, and i think the question is also relevant for other phones as well. Thats why i have posted here...
Really hope someone can help me
Thanks

I have found the solution myself...

Use of Ext. Mic on Android when Recording Video [SOLVED]
External Microphones and Video Recording.
The existing thread discussed the solution to the general question of using an external microphone with a combo jack. I however ran into a related problem when I tried to use an external microphone when recording video with the standard camera app.
As noted in the thread above, the first step is using a splitter adapter which splits the signal into two distinct ports - one that can be used for a microphone input connection (mono), and the other for stereo output to a headphone. I used a StarTech MUYHSMFF adapter that cost about $8.00 (US). :good:
This solution worked for straight audio recording as I could indeed record audio. But the solution failed when I tried to record video. Obviously, this meant that the problem was a software problem either in the camera app or in Android itself, as opposed to a hardware problem.
The Asus technical support person suggested that I try a new camera app. I download and tried seven or eight camera apps to no avail. Asus support then suggested that it was a problem in Android and said that I would just have to wait until there was a new version and hope that the problem was addressed.
As I bought my tablet primarily to record and edit video segments, I was not satisfied with this answer.
After an ungodly long search, I came across a site that stated that the IgCamera App was the only camera app to overcome this problem. While I don't know if it is the only app that works, the IgCamera does work and work well.
One minor note. As the combo jack only allows a mono input, I bought a mono cable extension to connect to my lavalier microphone. The only mono cable that I could find was a data transfer cable. Unfortunately, this cable created a major impedance problem: every recording had a loud buzz. I switched to a stereo cable which eliminated the problem. A wireless mic would be even better.
The real solution, of course, is for the manufacturers to provide a separate mic port, something that costs money so they probably won''t did it. A separate mic port would also provide the option of recording in stereo.

External microphone for hangouts.

Has anyone had any luck, or even attempted, using some sort of compact, external microphone for Google Talk or Hangouts? I tried searching but all of the threads are a year old, full of misinformation about how the 3.5mm jack is "out only" or involves soldering and magic.
Id really just like to know if I could throw in a non-powered or battery powered (gotta be small) microphone and have someone actually hear me when chatting. Right now everyone struggles to hear me when the tablet isnt 6" away from my face.
A directional mic that would allow me to set the tablet on a table (standing in its case of course) would be excellent. Small and reasonably priced would be great because the purpose is to use it on the road.
TIA
3.5MM port works with my Turtle Beaches with magic (Till I broke it...)
USB works with more magic, you have to port linux drivers :/
Bluetooth is the Easiest and Best option. I'd definitely go bluetooth for ease of use and connect.
My $.02
I'm looking more for conference functionality. So I can have it sitting on the dining room table and have the girlfriend and I chatting in a hangout. I surprised this hasn't been addressed, I guess nobody uses their tablet for Google talk or hangouts.
I use the earbuds that came with my Nexus S, they have a microphone built in.
As far as stand-alone microphones, I don't know of any. If you find one I'd like to know!
Id think if that external mic plugged in works fine when a simple, stand alone mic would. But most of the ones on Amazon have horrible reviews. I was hoping someone had thought about having a group chat on the thing.
I tried one of thos bluetooth car speakerphones and it was horrible. That is going back.

you may want to try this http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Boombox-Smartphones-Tablets-Laptops/dp/B005PUZOYM
its an external speaker with a mic built in. so you can set your tablet on the table and place the mic closer to you, its bluetooth so dont have to worrie about wires, i've used it for my phone streaming music and when a call comes in i can talk. . on my tablet i use it to play movies audio but never used the mic in that sense.
maybe that way will work for you
Any chance you could try a chat or hangout with it? Ive tried my existing bluetooth solutions and nothing works.
As for wired mics Ive tried multiple and all have failed. They dont record audio in any way well (camera, chat, whatever) and plugging a mic in tells the transformer its got headphones in.
Headphones for TF101
I tired the original headphone with built in mic which came with blackberry Bold 9700. It worked. Both audio out and mic is working same time.
Does anybody know if a USB mic would work conecting it to the dock? I stream video on ustream but built in mic is below average. I was thinking on buying a usb mic and conecting it to the usb ports. Will it work?

Well I can now confirm USB mic doesn't work when connected to the dock
You need to port the linux drivers for it to work effectively.

How can I do that?
Depending on how much you want to spend and what converters you are willing to use:
a Zoom H2n has worked well for me (adjustable gain, uses up to 4 built in mics to get audio from all sides).

[Q] Sound from one earpiece using headphone jack, common issue?

Hello,
I don't have a SGS3 but thinking of getting one. I've done some research and found a few threads mentioning an issue with the headphone jack.
They seem to get only sound from one earpiece if they use non-stock headphones.
Just wondering if this was an issue on the earlier batches or does it still exist? Here's one of the sites I found the issue being mentioned. Seems like I can't post a link yet so here's a quote.
Hi Seber Tech Team,
I am having the following 2 concerns with my Samsung Galaxy S3 I was hoping you could help.
First, when I plug in a headphone, only 1 speaker works. I have tested that headphone on other phones and it works fine. When I plug in auxiliary cable I only get sound out of 1 speaker, however, if I slightly pull the auxiliary plug out of the other end connection then I can get it to play in both speakers. I’m not sure why this is.
Second, the voice to text feature is inconsistent in that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t and gives a message that it can’t connect with Google at the moment. I do have the setting set to download offline speech recognition but I still have this happen periodically and about half the time I use it
Thanks and any help would be greatly appreciated
Keith
The Galaxy S3 has the typical 3.5mm headphone jack with four sections. This problem seldom happens when you’re using the original Samsung headphones/headsets. When you’re using just any 3.5mm headphones, there is a possibility audio pins cannot touch the right headphone contacts. That is why you have to pull the plug out a bit to produce a stereo (left and right) audio. I photoshopped a picture below just to give you a clearer explanation why using typical 3.5mm jacks may often lead to audio problems in Galaxy S3.

Never heard of such things.
The 3.5 mm Jack is universal.
Only different is hands free and volume control may require particular headphones, but sound out is all the same to all 3.5 mm standard headphones
I am working in a mobile accessories shop, as far as I know.
There is type hands free earphones can be used on both iPhone and other Android phones (Samsung, HTC, LG
..etc )
And another type, capable of volume control, this type can only used on some specific devices, in this case Galaxy S3,Note 2, iPhone 4,5 etc

Enable Phone Mic With Call Audio Through Bluetooth?

Here's my situation: In my car, I often have my OG connected to my stereo with an A2DP bluetooth audio receiver (without a mic). This works well for listening to music, or getting directions from the nav. However, if I answer a call while connected to it, I can hear the audio through my car speakers, but the other person can't hear me. I understand that the OG's internal mic is disabled at this point, as it is expecting a bluetooth mic to be connected. The work-around I have found is to disable bluetooth for phone calls. This plays the call audio through the phone speaker, and utilizes the internal mic like normal speakerphone.
What I would like is a mix of the two. I want the call audio to play through the car speakers, but enable the OG's internal mic so I can talk through that. Does anyone know of an app or setting I'm missing that might accomplish this?
Thanks.
No, but that sounds like it would be really easy to code if you wanted to learn some java.
(Disclosure: I don't know java)
I was hoping to use this in the next few days. I don't think I can learn java that quickly. But I agree, it seems like it should be pretty easy to accomplish. Software turns the mic off, it should be able to turn it back on.

Hey Ishkatar, nope I didn't find a solution yet, but I haven't spent too much time looking. I've been busy with work and traveling to see family on this holiday weekend. I'll definitely post here if I find anything.

The SoundAbout app seems like it will work when the phone is connected to a headset (audio out through headset, input via phone mic). But I can't find anything that will accomplish that when outputting audio through BT.

Yes, I tried it and it did not work with BT... After much research and testing multiple BT Manager apps I decided to return the BT adaptor and I'll think about buying a full BT hands-free connector...

Yeah, I think I might be forced to go with that Belkin adapter shown in the link above, which Is too bad because I was hoping not to spend anymore money, haha.
phone mic instead of bluetooth device
I had the same problem. I got fed up and decided to move the bluetooth mic to a more convenient location in my car, since I could not disable it. Before I re-positioned the un-soldered mic to a new location, I decided to make sure my soldering did not inadvertently damage any of the device. To my delight, without the mic being physically present, it defaulted to my phone mic. So, for me at least my problem was solved by removing the mic in question. I have no idea if it will work on other bluetooth devices.
any progress?
Just for info, after much research I don't think this is possible as Android does not allow routing of call audio to A2DP at all, probably due to security reasons?
I just plug a lead to the headphone jack and patch into the auxiliary input of my stereo. I also had one of those USB dongal Bluetooth receivers that worked exactly that way but it stopped working and other ones don't work, the one that did work was able to connect to phone audio as well as media audio. So it seems that if the mic can be disabled form the other end the Android mic will kick in. Android OS sucks you cannot do anything with the hardware. PC's piss over Google.
They probably don't do it because of latency error affecting feedback canceling. And what has external hardware got to do with security. Google just uses it as an excuse to getaway with marketing an inferior OS.
I wonder if I can replicate this. I need to kill the awful mic in my car Bluetooth so I can use phone mic
Has anyone tested this with non-native Calls like Skype, Facebook Calling, Zoom.US, what's app etc.?
it's totally unacceptable that I can use A2DP stereo audio + Computer Built in Microphone, but I can't do this with android!
Companies are taking off the headphone jack but they haven't figured out HD Bluetooth microphones yet!
Are any updates on this thread? maybe some apps could rout mic?

External stereo microphone for LG V30.

Hi, as mentioned in the title, I'm searching for a external microphone that will let me to record HiFi stereo sound.
Does anybody got experience with such topic?
Thanks
Is the reason being that the mic's on the device are not good enough? I believe they are among the best for phones, plus idk if you have the HD audio recorder app on your variant or model, but it does work amazingly well if you use the right settings (gain/levels). Been awhile since I read about the mic's but this phone uses more than 1 mic and they aren't junk, kinda what it was made for, idk if external mic would sound any better or not, especially w/o an expensive mic(s). But I initially bought an irig I/O audio interface that is compatible w/android for a mic or guitar with midi device and has that input and an output for recording, I got $400 worth of software included with the purchase (Amplitube 4 and more for free). BTW it is for sale and basically brand new if your interested, barely used replaced it with the 2i2) zBut for reference the irig i/o will do 24bit/96khz and the mic's and HD audio recorder on the phone will save Flac files up to 24bit/192khz. Or check out irig uo, was made for Android. I got my eye on the axe i/o which just came out for guitar recording, I wish they had these cheap modelers and Sims in the 90's, I think its awesome, I never had the money to buy the real equipment. Give some more info what your trying to do and maybe I could help more. Otherwise a usb audio interface on a PC is the way to go if you have one. Android is way behind Apple on compatible audio interfaces. I use the focusrite scarlet 2i2 that I use for my guitar with amplitube 4 amplifier Sims, it has 2 inputs for a mic and a instrument for recirding which is what (most) people use to make youtube videos. I could technically get it to work on my phone but not much to work with. Android needs to fix there audio latency issues, which is the reason companies don't bother making anything for it, getting more lately but it's not worth it imo, tons of stuff for Apple though but Ive never and will never buy an iPhone. Sorry some of that was off topic but hope I helped. Pm me if u want.

Yeah, the ear speaker turns into a 3rd microphone during high decibel environments (like concerts).
Hi.
Internal mics might be good but I need a professional microphone with a wind and noise protection and higher sensitivity, kinda the same they use on DSLRs.
I would like to use it for recording sound samples (nature, forest, etc)
Cheers
A good usb mic and a USB interface is all you need then. Make sure the interface is compatible with whatever your using. The irig i/o would work with Android or the other one I mentioned above. I'LL sell it cheap to you if your interested.

Thank you!
To connect a stereo microphone (or 2 mono microphones with a Y splitter) to your phone you need this adapter:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005K9WNPG
Since this has a USB A plug, you need an adapter cable to convert the plug to USB C. Something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Thunderbolt-Compatible-Chromebook-Pixelbook-Microsoft/dp/B07KR45LJW
Then if you're using an app that can handle stereo recording you should be good to go.

Can't use external mic. Apps like Open Camera don't solve it. I have an idea

Thank you in advance for any help on this.
So, I bought my mi8 lite in part for its good enough camera and the ability to make some videos.
My friends recommended my to buy a Boya B1-M1 lapel mic, and I did so.
When I plug this mic ( i need to use that damn usb c dongle that came with the phone ), nothing detects the external mic. I've tried the Open Camera and Cinema FV 5 App and set for external microphones and the problem persists.
On my older Huawei nova, the mic works, so that's not a mic problem.
I'm thinking that the problem is in the xiaomi usb-c dongle, more specifically in the way its jack is wired. I recently learned that there are two ways to wire a phone jack ( OMTP and CTIA ) and different companies might use one or the other. I really want to test this out with a cheap adapter but I don't have one ready and would prefer to see if somebody has had the same idea and if it worked.
Have you faced the same problem?
Thank you!
All the best,
João
