Flightmode on / phone off but bluetooth on - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just have the S2 from my old faithful HTC HD2 - with the HTC I use to use it in the gym with my bluetooth headset listening to music but with the phone turned off so I would not be disturbed..........
And from what I can see that is no longer possible with the S2 - surely there must be a way to turn the phone off and still use bluetooth without having to hack the root etc
I know I can use WiFI while in flight mode and GPS but that does not help whilst out running / in the gym - that's basically my time and I do not want to be disturbed, or disturb others hence wanting to simply turn the phone off that's all

By "phone off" you don't actually mean powering the device off, do you? Because that would be neat trick, listening to your music while the device was completely powered off.
You could turn Auto reject mode on to turn away all calls. (settings > call > call rejection)
EDIT: and what's wrong with flight mode? I'm not clear on why this wouldn't work for you. Or is it that you still want mobile data, but no phone calls?
EDIT 2: Herp derp, I see, it IS because you want mobile data, right? Since if you're out running, you don't have wifi available. So yeah, Auto reject mode should work for you.

He wants to use his phone like an mp3 player with bluetooth headsets. He wants to "turn off" phone functions and use only the phone like a music player.
AFAIK in "flight mode" is not possible to use bluetooth.

D'oh... missed one little detail.
Right, it's not possible. Bluetooth won't turn on in flight mode. Sorry.
Auto reject mode should still work for the OP's purposes though.

AloneOnTheDark is spot on - really just a simple request one would have thought......
He wants to use his phone like an mp3 player with bluetooth headsets. He wants to "turn off" phone functions and use only the phone like a music player.
Only issue using the Auto Reject mode is that the caller calling me does not get put through to my voice mail and all the caller hears is that the call is unauthorised..... so not really that sensible as it might be a client trying to get hold of me, and at least a voice mail etc they can handle.............
Still can't believe this is such a major issue and that there are no apps / wdigets to do this, though did come across one potential one where you might be able to turn the phone off, but there was a caveat that it might not work and that you would have to do a factory reset etc

Then you can change your forwarding. settings > call > call forwarding > voice call. Activate "always forward", and put in your voice mail number for your carrier. It should be the same number as the three other forwarding options below it. Same menu options to disable it when you want to turn it off.

Call forwarding is built into the OS, so probably no one saw the need to build an app for it... Just guessing though.

ctomgee thanks that's the way to go - bit of a faff to do but worth it for some peace & quiet away from the phone, and I know I could have ignored the call, but can never bring myself to do that

No prob.
FYI, you can create a shortcut directly to the call fowarding settings menu too. Just download "Any Cut" from the market. Or if you're using Launcher Pro as your homescreen launcher, you can do this with a long press on the homescreen. It's a bit of a pain to find stuff you want to shortcut to, but you only have to do it once this way.

I honestly didn't even check the market for an app for it. I just assumed there wasn't one because you said there wasn't one.

Hi can you tell me which app you found please? I've tried several but can't switch on BT with any of them once in flight mode. I want to do exactly what you do in the gym! Thanks!

Connecting Notifier for Windows mobile phones

CareAce.net have recently developed a notifier for Windows mobile phones that vibrates for a short period after an outgoing call has gone through.
So basically, it vibrates when someone picks up your call (even if its through to voicemail). It does not vibrate on connection to the network, that's a different feature.
Please check out more about it here: http://www.careace.net/2009/07/23/careace-exclusive-connecting-notifier/
Love to hear your opinion/suggestions!
Well... this does already exist in any HTC ROM I know... Do you mean that it doesn't exist on samsung devices ?
Yes and yes. this feature was omitted from some of the Samsung smartphones/pocket pcs. So we do see this as a sort of patch as well.
Can someone please upp the app here? Don't wanna to register there...

I thought this app does something different than the option on HTC roms... from what i understand, the one we currently have just vibrates on connection to the network. This app, however, vibrates when the person actually picks up the phone, not connection to the network. Please let me know if I'm mistaken and there actually is an option already to vibrate on pickup. Thanks

This app vibrates when someone picks up the phone. It does not vibrate on network connection. I haven't tried the feature on a native (unmod) HTC roms, but from the sound of it (as you described), they are not the same function.

Yeah, I think people are confusing the two functions. BUT, please let me know if I'm mistaken and this feature already exists on phones like the HTC Touch Pro and Diamond. If it's not on these phones, i consider it a great find.
can someone pls upload the file over for touch pro. i guess this should work with the default dailer skin. thanks.
even my dumb nokia phone have this feature
And every HTC, too... I don't understand people here... The touch pro already has this feature.
Just go to Start > Settings > Phone > Advanced > Vibrate on connect (or something like that... my ROM is french, so I don't know the exact name for the option).

Maybe you should know what you're talking about before you start questioning people and start calling them dumb (person above you)...
The feature already on our devices is to vibrate on connection to network... meaning when our call actually starts going out. Then it rings.
This app is different. Your phone rings... the it vibrates when the person you're calling actually picks up.
Yeap. Reiterating: I don't have a HTC that I'd tested this on. I've only tested it on SAMSUNG Windows Mobile devices which includes the Omnia, Epix, Blackjack, Jack and Propel Pro.
The feature: When your call goes THROUGH = ring, ring, ring... Hello. Then it vibrates.
The good thing about this as compared to vibrating when calling out is that you don't have to keep an ear (or an eye) on the phone to see if the call has gone through. And as our article has (hopefully) humorously underlined, it provides benefits like: health, safety, etiquette and finance.
Would love to have you try it (http://bit.ly/IpDsl) and share any input/bug report.
Thanks!
Slide 2 Unlock 2 will also do this, but I found that when I used it, various people would complain about a noise when I answer the phone or they answer the phone.
I called myself from home phone/to home phone, and both directions I can hear "WHIRRR" where the vibration is being picked up by the microphone.
Just my experience ;-)

@khaytsus. Yeap, that is a known issue when it comes to Samsung Omnia as well. This is actually device-based, depending on the location of the vibration motor.
For the rest of the Samsung device that we've tested, the motor is near the mic, whereas for the Omnia, it is closer to the top, hence creating a vibration sound when connected.
And yes, S2U2 amongst some other freeware/shareware has similar function alongside the 'main package' that they deliver, whereas this is sort of like a patch, giving the Samsung (and other applicable devices) what other device like HTC, may already have.

First, you shall not tell me what I'm allowed to say or not Thank you very much.
Then, don't blame me because someone else said the word "dumb", i'm not responsible for that.
And finally, my HTC Touch Diamond only vibrates when the person picks up, answers and talks to me. AFTER RINGING. I don't see the point in vibrating just when the call is going out... I use this vibration to put the phone to my ear only if someone (or voice mail) has picked up...
So please stay calm, we're just discussing features here, not calling people names.

[Q] Voice Dialing DIRECTLY from my Bluetooth Headset... How do you ENABLE it?

Hi all,
I have searched the forums and have not seen anything related to my question so please forgive me if this is repetitive.
I have never used a BT Headset before and I just bought a little cheap one today. It works very well and I only paid $10 bucks for it so I am quite satisfied but...
In the instructions, it tells me how to make "voice calls" from the headset but it says to "enable the function" on my mobile device and I cannot find where you "ENABLE" this on my phone.
Can anyone point me to where and how I do this? Do I need an app of some kind to do this or should this function be native to the SGSII?
If this may be ROM related... Please see my siggy for info...
Please advise...
Thanks,
Just pressing the button on the Bluetooth device for a second should bring up the voice controls.
Thanks for the reply but that is the problem... Pressing the button on the BT device does nothing. I hear the tone in my ear as the instructions mention but nothing opens up on the phone.
I realized that I did not have the voice Dialer apk installed so I installed it but still nothing happens when I press the BT Device button. It only opens when I press the app on screen and I want COMPLETE HANDS FREE...
Try making sure you have VoiceToGo installed and your rom didn't replace it with that homemyhome app. I never had voice dialer work with the BT button either so I had to stay stock voice apps.
What rom are you on? I can't see sigs since I disabled them a long time ago.

I have "Vlingo" installed and I think that is what you mean by "voice to go" if Im not mistaken. Vlingo only works if you press all of the appropriate buttons on screen and only accepts commands from the phones mic and not the BT.
I installed another app called "Choice Dialer Free" and it is much better except that I still have to enable the app first on screen and then give commands so that is still NOT what I want.
I am on CheckRom Revo.v4
***EDIT*** I found the Samsung Voicetogo app and am installing it now. I will see how that works and advise...
On my phone it works fine from the BT device I start it using the button on the BT device then talk into it.
Your phone isn't pin or pattern locked right? Because Samsung stupidly removed the ability to use voice commands when locked (normal slide to unlock is fine though) I had to give up security for the ability to use my phone when driving because of it.
I am also from Alberta so I know the laws you are dealing with that require voice dialing.
I wonder if any others you installed are conflicting with voicetogo which is the preinstalled Samsung version of Vlingo.

Use your GPlayer as a regular Cell Phone

A few days ago I bought a device called GMATE ($80), a type of smallcell without display or keyboard which is inserted a normal simcard and communicating via Bluetooth to the Samsung Galaxy Player, which means an application is integrated with android, receiving and making phone calls, and SMS, in addition to allowing internet access GPRS.
It's a perfect combination that increases the possibilities of Our Player
IPhones must be jailbroken, a repo is added to Cydia, and then the Gmate app is installed for the integrated Gmate functionality. How does this work in Android?
In GooglePlay you can download a Gmate aplication that integrates the gadget with your android player (also convert your android phone in a double sim phone) and uses android phone's features like dialer, contacts, or any thirtd party aplication likes rocket Dial.
Received and Make calls donĀ“t need special features, if you uses the Gprs/edge to internet (in places with no WIFI) need to be rooted.
The application is not compatible with my U.S. 5.0 Player.

Thank you for the info! I will definitely buy one if it works in The Netherlands.
That does look interesting.
Anyone using it with the USA version?

So I can make phone calls/sms without having wifi?

Gmate only.. I tried it with my other android phone and it doesn't work.
I came further when I changed my phone's Bluetooth id to "Gmate". It didn't connect because of a password failure
It's seems good
I don't quite understand... So besides buying the Gmate, would i need a sim card as well? secondly so would i practically be using a sim card with a data plan to use with gmate? but wouldnt that defeat the purpose of just using a smart phone with a card in it?.... these are all continuation Q's if the first is a yes lol.
This seems like a stupid question, but I'll ask anyway. How well does the device actually work? Does it keep a connection throughout the day, sending and receiving text messages without too much delay? I'm considering using this to replace my old dumbphone, but I'd rather not plunk down a sizable chunk of change with little indication as to how well this thing actually works.

EDIT: I HAVE FIXED THE MAIN ISSUE WITH MY GMATE, MORE INFORMATION BELOW
Well, my Gmate+ came in the mail today, and I've been playing with it for a little while now and am able to give first impressions. First off, the device is much smaller than I imagined, it easily fits in my palm, the vibration (on the plus version) is very loud. As for the function itself, it works. You can call and send and receive text messages (haven't tested the web access yet) with a few minor (and one major) annoyances. My device is currently a US SGP 4.0 running Terrasilent 1.1 and EtherealRom 2.3.
Minor annoyances I have found with the Gmate+:
- Notifications (read: texts) do not make noise/vibrate while the screen is locked. Once the screen goes on, if you do have a new text, it notifies you, kind of ruining the point of the notification.
- Text messages you send have proper time stamps, for some reason, the ones you receive are off by a few hours, as if the sender is in a different time zone
- Seems to be no way to delete contacts from the address book, even uninstalling, wiping data, reinstalling didn't do anything about this.
Major annoyance with the Gmate+:
- It disconnects, and by that I mean it disconnects ALL THE TIME, the device is pretty much useless because of this, it will be fine for a few minutes, then disconnect, regardless of how close the Gmate is to my SGP. Every few minutes, I'd check it, and guess what? No connection. Sometimes it would reconnect, sometimes I'd have to manually do it, sometimes I'd have to restart one or both devices to get it to work again.
Seeing as everything the device does it actually does quite well when actually connected, I want to rule this problem to some battery saving tweak in my kernel/rom. As such, I'll be returning to stock and trying the Gmate again to see if any of these issues are cleared up. As it stands, I have a 75$ paperweight that buzzes occasionally.
EDIT: After flashing back to stock and noticing no change, I began searching around and found other people having similar problems with similar devices, mainly connecting their smartphones to the bluetooth sound system in their car. Turns out in Deep Sleep, the device has issues keeping constant bluetooth connection. After downloading an app (Bluetooth KeepAlive: ~$1.30) on the market that keeps the device from entering this mode, the Gmate no longer disconnects, and has remained connected for several days, having no problem with calls or text messages at any time. In summary, with this app, I am now happy to recommend the Gmate to anyone who is looking for this kind of functionality. Guess it goes to show that non compatible apps are listed in the Play Store as non working for a reason

[Q] Bluetooth voice dialing p760

Hi. My dad bought LG L9 P760, soft V20B. Every site says that he can use voice dialing, but he cannot. One quick button press start redial function, two quick do nothing, same as one long. Tested on nokia and SE WM600 bluetooth headset (music flow without problems). Is there a way to enable this option, maybe CyanogenMod, other rom or something, because it was primary function in his old Nokia C6-01?
Ed. Roms with CM works, and long press start voice dialer, but headset make "modem" noise only and caller app hangs.
Did this ever worked for you? I just got a LG-769 and can't use the Bluetooth to voice dial. Pressing the button on the Bluetooth does not do anything when using it with other phones it will ask me to 'Say a Name' to call.

I have the same issue with the 769 they forced me to have (they called it "alternate swap"). It's because the "Voice Dialing" app is missing from the phone. If you look at any Android phone going all the way back to the G1, there's an app on there just called Voice Dialing or Voice Dialer. That's the app that gets called whenever you push the dial button on your bluetooth headset. Because that app is MIA on the L9, there's nothing there for the bluetooth system to bring up. I'm still trying to find a way to dump that app from the G2X I have lying around and see if that fixes it. From what I've seen, third party voice dialer apps don't work because the headset is very specifically trying to call up that application at some level. If anyone else has been able to find a fix for this, I'd be interested.

Likewise. I feel it's as if the phone doesn't even recognize that the button has been pressed. I've tried several apps in the play store which try to capture this event to divert it to a different app and none of those work either. Any idea what I can do?
Bluetooth
Get a different phone. That's what I did.
If that's the only option I might just do that. But I would think this could be fixed since I can run a bluetooth keyboard just fine with the device. Also, pressing and holding the button on my bluetooth performs a redial as it should so I believe that the O.S. is ignoring an incoming command which someone with understanding might be fixable. Does an aftermarket ROM or different kernel fix the issue?

Android 10 update broke calling

Got the update last night. Tried to check voicemail morning and was greeted with Alvin & The Chipmunks blabbing at me. It's like the speed of the call is x20 speed or something. It's completely unusable. Phone sluggish as hell, too.
Anyone know what's going on with the voice speed? I've never heard of anything like this.
I'm supposed to get a callback for a job interview I had yesterday. Pretty crappy timing. How is Google going to push an update that breaks calls like this? Absurd.
its nokia that pushed the update they did not make the rom right
Same here I told nokia about it and they told me to wait for a bug fix. I told them I wanted to downgrade since your firmware bug broke my phone.
Just wait for a bug fix? So use a Phone that cant make calls right?
So payed a guy to unlock my boot loader to try to flash a rom so i can just make the phone usable.
I spend about 6 hours try to get the rom to work. With little to no luck I was able to get into twrp a few times.
So ya Im in the same boat. I just got this phone back 3 weeks ago from a rma due to a bad chargeing port. Now Im forced to pay some one to unlock the boot loader and try to get a custom rom Just to be able to call
If I cant get the rom working Im going to have to go spend like $200 on a new phone today just sucks

Anyone know what's going on with the voice speed? I've never heard of anything like this.
I'm supposed to get a callback for a job interview I had yesterday. Pretty crappy timing. How is Google going to push an update that breaks calls like this? Absurd.

Same thing happened to me with the sped up chipmunk-y sound. It happened during the dial and after someone picks up. Though it didn't seem to happen every time. Also, I didn't notice it on any incoming calls, just outgoing.
I tried a few things to fix it--rebooting, clearing some app caches, etc. Nothing seemed to work.
My next step was to try a factory reset, but then all of a sudden the issue disappeared. No new update was released/installed, so I just assumed the issue had been on my provider's end (T-Mobile), and they fixed whatever the problem was.
As for sluggishness of the phone after the update: I agree. It seems a little sluggish to me too. Not anything that is making the phone unusable. But it is noticeably more sluggish than when 9.0 was installed.
Have you guys modified the phone in any way like unlocking the bootloader or rooting?

I haven't. Just using whatever over the air OS Nokia pushes to the phone.
yes I did pay to unlock the boot loader I used linage from the rom section
it has all the bugs of the stock rom. Cant call out or with out the loud noise bug and no voip apps work
I did get the Android 9 based rom to work. it has a few bugs but its usable.
I more or less gave up im looking at a iphone now.
I spend 20 hours or more trying to get this phone to work
first the usb port goes out and I cant charge.
2 weeks after having the phone back I got a magnetic cable so the usb port would not brake any more cable. That was like $20
After 2 weeks android 10 more or less bricks the phone (a phone that cant make calls)
Then I have to spend like $15 to pay the poor guy to unlock my boot-loader (he did a great job)
I spend a lot more time loading the linage android 10 rom for it to have the same bugs ( in no way is it the devs fault im sure he did not know).
... can unlock your bootloader for a small fee.
I would say all android 10 based rom will have those kind of problems. I can only confirm it on the android 10 linage one
When I flash twrp most of the time the twrp would just freeze if booting form the phone.
I had no problem loading it with fastboot works evey time. So I would only use it install the rom and just boot it when you need it. I would not suggesting flashing it to recovery as it only worked some of the time for me.
Hope all that info helps

How to fix the phone call problems
To everyone having calling issues (distortion / squealing, or other people can't hear them), try this: Turn off Voice over LTE. You go to Settings -> Wireless and Networks -> Mobile Networks -> VoLTE, and turn that setting off. This fixed the problem for all 3 Nokia 7.1 phones in our family, when nothing else seemed to work.
Turning off VoLTE and wifi calling works, but VoLTE is important in my area with TMobile. Without it, too many dropped and missed calls. I actually downgraded from an Xperia XZ1 just to get VoLTE, now this happens.
I have TA-1085 running Android 10 that was pushed OTA on 12/25, while I do not have calling issues (from native call app) initially, calling from all 3rd party app (e.g. Messenger or Wechat) are not working: I can hear other side, while the other side can not hear me.
In addition to disabling VoLTE, I also changed the 'preferred network type' (see posting from author 'fiumaxx' on nokia's user forum, search there using android-10-after-update-on-nokia-7-1 as search string). I changed it to LTE/CDMA which works well for me.
Normal call sound is back to normal but 3rd party calling still not working.

This worked for me:
Go to Settings/Apps and Notifications and then tap on where it says See All xx Apps. Scroll down until you see the Google app and tap on that. On the next screen you see, tap on Permissions and then tap on Microphone. A small window will pop up, and you must change the setting from Allow to Deny.
After changing this setting, Google Assistant won't work (no Hey Google), but the fix is persistent after reboots. This makes me think the real problem may be with the Google app. We'll see.

Thank you so much for sharing! Works like a charm
Unfortunately denying microphone for the Google app did not work for me. I also noticed no one can hear me when making videos calls (Hangouts, Duo, Facebook messenger).
I then decided to factory reset, but did not help. Both VoLTE and video calling still not working.
Anyone else with video calling mic issues?

I had the same symptom on normal phone call (other side could not hear me). In my case, it was the Google Assistant not releasing the microphone, and here what worked: open the system settings, go to Google (service&preferences)/Account services/Search, Assistant&Voice/Voice/Voice Match. Them make sure Access With Voice Match is ticked off.
Or try opening settings, searching at the top for "Voice" and open "Voice Match", and tick off "Access with Voice Match".

Confirm this recipe works for my TA-1085. Thanks much.
I solved my random voice problems (others can't hear me on Duo video call, duplex voice on the other side etc.) with the voice match assistant workaround until hopefully gets fixed in a next update. Don't know for sure if the thing is only on Nokia's side or Google app's as well on Android 10, since disabling Hey Google solves all issues
Will have to try/catch on future google app updates as well to find out

Under "Voice Match" I don't see any "Access With Voice Match" setting. What I do see is "Hey Google," which says "Access your Assistant any time you say "Hey Google" when your screen is on." Perhaps this is what your mean?
I tried this solution and it works, too. I think it also has the advantage of not completely shutting down Assistant's access to the microphone. Just waking up Assistant by voice. Much less of a price. Thanks!
Has anyone heard anything about a real fix for this issue? I've gotten two Android updates since the upgrade to Android 10, but this issue has not been fixed yet.
After extensive talks and inside info on Nokia's community forums, seems like a Maintenance update (MR) is on the way for May, which they say fixes -among others- both voice bugs. That is, the echo on calls plus sound distortion in some games (e..g Monument Valley 2 for me)
Cross your fingers everyone for a quick release and confirmation of the fixes!
Today was the day at last....! MR update showed up rolling out globally and echo during calls plus crackling sounds in games are finally gone
Better late than never NOKIA

Yes, they seem to have fixed the voice call problems with Whatapp, Wechat, Hangouts and etc since the Android 10 update.
