Google Acquiring Motorola - Motorola Droid X2

Do you think this will have any affect on our Droid X2? Good or bad? I don't really know the details of the deal, or what Google is planning on doing with Motorola. I know they want some patents Motorola has but dont know if they are planning on taking control of Motorola's devices. Do you think if Google has control, they will unlock our bootloader? Or continue to let Motorola still run itself?

im not too sure, all i know is i can hope for the best

Thats all I'm doing. Im just hoping Google might have a little say in the matter. Everything I read is "Google wants to keep Android OPEN."

This happened along time ago. They are acquiring Motorola Mobility, not Motorola

Depends on whom you are in the industry. Apple- terrible thing because now Google is a direct competitor. Samsung- terrible because they don't have direct access to the bleeding edge roms. HTC- expect them to go out of business. Google- fantastic as they are going to produce more seamless products.

ICS on the DX2 - Your Opinions and Comments

So last week we witnessed the announcement of Ice Cream Sandwich. The question has been asked multiple times in multiple places, but I want this post to consolidate all of those fragmented questions. So, do you think that our DX2's will get a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich? They are, after all, not even a year old yet, and I doubt that the Tegra 2 processor, with our 512mb of RAM, will not be enough to run ICS. That is, unless Moto bloats and blurs it up to the point of instability. So what do you think? Will we ever see the light of ICS on our phones?
Personally, the optimist in me wants to believe that ICS will come to fruition on our DX2's. The phone is not 5 months old, and if past trends are to be followed (like the Droid X), the phone SHOULD be within the time frame that Moto seems to allocate for updating. Then again, the realist in me says that, due to this phone's rather marginal popularity, we will never see ICS.
There is already a fully active conversation on the subject, this thread is unnecessary man. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1309570
I did read that thread, I thought it deviated a little off point and that it was never intentioned to be a discussion about the probability of the DX2 getting ICS. Just wanted to start a thread that consolidates everything, has a poll, and its purely for the purpose of speculation or discussion about the specific topic. But yea, I apologize if it has been mentioned before, it's not my intention to be superfluous. Sorry again
I put my money on the x2 NOT getting ICS. This phone was the redheaded stepchild of the year. They just put a lot of effort in getting the 2.3.4 build out, so I consider that the x2's swan song.

I agree. I've been lurking around the forums for probably a year, only just decided to get involved so I noticed that you got the Droid Bionic to replace your DX2. How do you like it? I'm seriously considering selling my DX2, along with all of my accessories, on Ebay so I can buy a phone that will run ICS. Android Central released an article in which they gave their predictions for ICS, and the Bionic was on the "definite" list, so it seems like a safe bet.

I was also thinking of getting a bionic for a while but I am waiting. I don't want razr either. I want to try a sammy or htc unless moto drops something soon that blows my mind. The x2 is my first phone in 6 yrs and while I like it a lot I feel like it could be so much more. I don't think I will sell my x2 when I do get another phone tho since I know as soon as I sell it then something big will happen with it.
It would be awesome to see ICS on the x2 but I feel like even tho it will probably run ICS smooth I foresees it being a lot different than what the newer phones will be able to do with ICS. I say this mostly due to how I see bionic and droid3 running the newest best MOTOBLUR but we are left out of that. I think x2's ICS will be a LOT different than the way other phones run it. And maybe that is due to our tegra 2. All the other phones seem to be coming out with OMAP and are running much smoother than our x2 seems to be.
I see what you're saying ash, but I bet if it gets it it's the same. The reason being - ICS was meant to be unskinned for the most part. Google owns moto. They wouldn't go through the trouble of skinning the x2 version and not the bionic or razr - they'd just port it. Easier.

I understand
What I meant to say was that it is likely that ICS for the x2(skinned or not) might end up not having all the same features that a bionic/droid3/razr might have. Not that it would be a huge difference . I was trying to compare it in a way. My words got mixed around tho
And the 2 things I see contributing the most to those differences are our processor, and RAM amount being lesser than other dual core devices. I mean it seems already that are tegra 2 is becoming "outdated" fairly quickly each time a new dual core comes out. Imho of course

I believe that the D3 has the same amount of RAM as the DX2, right? The only fundamental difference is the processor. Oh, and it's a minor thing, but both the D3 and Bionic have front facing cameras, and a lot of ICS's new features (like facial unlock, enhanced google + video chat, etc) rely on the device having a front facing camera. That can play into Motorola's decision too I think.
I don't see the need to speculate, I mean, if something pops up like a FB/Twitter post that says DX2 maybe, DX2 no, or DX2 yes, then you can speculate time frames. Our speculation isn't going to sway their decision, lol. Besides even if it is yes, it will be months down the road, just like 2.2.2 to 2.3.3 on the X1.

Pull me off the ledge! May dump the Razr

I'm really pissed at Moto for locking this bootloader while other manufs go ahead and unlock theirs. Seems we're screwed! I've got a couple days yet before I lose the ability to return this thing and am stuck with a very developer UNfriendly device for the next couple years. What to do? I'm not a huge ROM'er but I definately like to tweak and I don't like to envision everyone getting toys/tweaks/tricks on their HTC's,LG's,Sammys, etc etc while us poor souls on the Moto side get screwed over. I'm on the ledge....pull me off or push me over! Need help deciding...does this thing have a future or in two years will I be BEGGING for a chance to upgrade?
I have a Droid Charge with unlocked bootloader and it still gets no development. I still thoroughly enjoy the phone though. Of the phones on the market, the razr is the one I like best. Moto knows how to make a smooth fast phone with great reception.
If you're a rom junkie, go for the nexus. However if you're patient enough, keep waiting with us till the bootloader gets unlocked and enjoy the full potencial of the Razr.
You should do a side by side comparison of the RAZR next to any other phone... that's what I did before buying my RAZR... I like having a removable SD card and HDMI out... the battery could sway you but I think with the maxx coming out someone will produce an after market cover, after all the battery isn't soldered in like the iphone is... I personally love the quality of Motorola phones... as far as development goes, I wouldn't let the locked bootloader get to you, I had my DroidX for 2 years with a locked bootloader and I still had quite a few roms to flash, doesn't anyone remember 2nd init? I'm sure the RAZR devs will find a way around the stupid bootloader... in the meantime everyone get into operation mosh, and let big red and Motorola know we mean business... I love my RAZR, I personally have a lot of faith in this product, I'm actually looking into learning how to develop for android just because I want to help anyone who takes up the torch to develop for this awesome device

The only thing the locked bootloader prevents different kennels from being used. There are two or three roms out now plus a deodexed or two that you install with the bootstrap.

I can tell you this. I tried out the Nexus for about a week, and took it back. While I LOVE ICS, the phone itself SUCKS. Esp next to the Razr. Slower, horrible battery life, cheap feel, lackluster camera...I could go on and on. I am pissed off too but it is still the best option out there so far.
Sorry for this extremely newb question. This is my first dabble in the Android world, I've always been an iPhone user since moving from dumb to smart phone.
I've been using the Arctic ROM for last couple of weeks and the latest version makes me never want to go back to the stock Rogers ROM. Now here's the question - given that even without an unlocked bootloader, one can still relatively easily flash a new ROM using CWM, what's this big deal about unlocked bootloader. Also what's special about this ever so elusive custom kernel that has been mentioned?
One of the biggest problems I'm seeing with the locked BL bs is that it appears to be scaring away developers who would rather go the easier route and develop on a unlocked machine. Yea you might get it to work on the Razr but it takes steps A-B-C-D-E and who knows how much more for the devs to get it working as opposed to A and B with a ULBL. Look around...we've got very very little in the way of development or ROMS....
If ROM'ing is really important to you, you really ought to get a GNex. Even if the bootloader does get unlocked (which is up in the air, since Moto's broken that promise in the past), there will be far more development for the GNex.
I got the RAZR for the killer hardware and the smooth user experience. I don't know that I'll ROM this even if they do unlock the bootloader, and I was a ROM junkie on my OG Droid.
ICS is rolling out to the Motorola Xoom tablet this weekend. The RAZR may be only a week or two away from getting ICS with a hardware accelerated GUI. That aside, it's a great phone - terrific reception, loud speakerphone, excellent voice quality. You really want to give up all that?
Oh, and a new thread just broke: The poster says he was contacted by the FCC and they are charging VZW with violations for having a locked bootloader. Hmmm...

I pray that you are right. Though I love this phone more than any other phone I've had before (HD2, HD7, Sensation, G2X, Bionic), it's killing me that I can't mess around with it. I paid top dollar for this prostitute. And I want to do whatever I feel like to her, regardless of what her pimp says.
Any word if the ICS update to the Xoom this weekend may have unlocked their bootloader? I know this was the thought and hopes of some for the ICS upgrade coming to the RAZR.

Will ICS on the RAZR affect development for us DX2 users?

I'm rather new(6 months in) to the scene of flashing roms and sbf'ing and scripting and this sort of stuff. My question is this, since the Razr is Motorola's latest creation and it is said to be getting ICS starting today with an update, will this update play any role in possible development for a full blown ICS AOSP based rom (similar to CM7, I would guess) but with the elements of ICS all in one place. Without having to piece it all together to just look like ICS. Any insight on this would be cool to hear. I'm just curious, and can't upgrade until 2013
Thanks.

sir, first off you posted on the wrong forum, dx2 android dev, i ask a mod to move this to general
and tbh, i have no idea if this would affect us, but i do know the razr has an omap ti chip compared to our ****ty, locked down tegra2
I thought about where to post this and development seemed suitable. Sorry if I broke some rules or something, it just seemed like it might get more attention here being a development question and not just a general question.

which i fully understand, sir, but i dont think the razr will help us much, because of the chipset
I guess I should have clarified more, now that I think about it, I was thinking more like, would it be possible to take the pieces out of the ICS rom for the RAZR and some how incorporate them into the one of our current roms? Just different elements of the SBF file or systemui.apk. Like I said, I could be blowing smoke and sound completely ignorant about the topic, but I'm just gathering thoughts is all. And please, no need to call me sir. I'm a noob here. lol

Quick Answer: Not like you are thinking??
We won't get Official ICS, IF dzk ever gets the time away from class, we will see a PORT of cm9(which is ICS), but we will probably 'never' get ICS or any ICS Based ROM for a while. Too much stuff to do and not a lot of devs...also, personal life gets in the way a lot over on this end of Android.
It looks like the RAZR is already on the verge of taking the back seat to whatever Motorola/Verizon have on the horizon (Droid Fighter). I get an upgrade next month and have my fingers crossed in hopes that a variant of the HTC One X will come to Verzion (I would settle for an HTC Droid Incredible 4G at this point). This locked bootloader will be the death of development in the foreseeable future, if anything. Motorola makes solid hardware but doesn't want to us to play with it. It's a damn shame.

True its a shame. The locked bootloader is a big reason I gave up on my X2. The possibilities on the phone could be endless if they'd unlock it but that will never happen cuz Motorola is Big Reds B$%ch. But dragonzkiller still might pull it off for u guys with cm9 in his spare time, and hopefully he will.

It's been said already, but there is no way in hell the DX/DX2 are getting ICS from Motorola. Dragonkiller is probably the best bet and I know he mentioned in another thread he had lots of personal life stuff till at least summer.
Simple answer: No one should be buying Motorola. Send them a message. The Galaxy S III should be out soon and HTC has a decent quad core in the pipeline. Stop buying Motorola phones!
My DX2 does run better then my DX did but that's only because of DK's CM7 port. If VZW's insurance company did not give me the DX2 for a replacement of the DX I had, I would have never owned this phone. It sucks you have until 2013 but with any luck a CM9 p
ort will get done. In 2013 if the world has not ended yet and the time finally comes for your upgrade, I hope you remember Motorola screwing you and not buy another Motorola device. Don't buy into the owned by Google thing, they are still the same company and play by the same rules. Have they removed the encrypted bootloader? No and they won't because Google may own them but they are not interfering with any of Motorolas business practices. Also don't forget Google has become VZW's b*tch lately too so don't expect Google to stand up for you.

I have a Razr Maxx side by side with a Galaxy Nexus, and taking out all the politics and love/hate to their manufacturers, here is my evaluation of them as PHONES (ya know, thingies that make calls):
- Gnex - early ICS, tried more than 10 different ROMs until I settled for one that is just blazing fast. Battery - barely a day. Insufficient battery life, for my needs.
- Razr - Good hardware. Lots of trolling on forums, caused by Motorola's delays. Amazing battery, but without several ROMs to test, the only usable thing is an ICS leak that underperforms - sluggish, and no native SIP (no, I don't want it through 3rd party apps - Gnex's ICS has it. Period.).
I do have a 3200mAh battery for the Gnex. Lasts more than a day with it, but looks like a telephone with a disease. Or a very healthy brick.
At the end of the day, I like them both, but I just wish I had a Gnex with the Razr's battery.
I want to complain about ics leak 211 running great on my RAZR Maxx. ..but then I woke up and realised its as good as it selling. I read something today stating the RAZR/Maxx line gas outsold Verizon's iPhone 4s finally. Might not be much but that's a good foothold.
I like my razr, really much, he's like a son for me, the perfect son.
I just hate motorola, really hate..

None of your gripes happened after you bought your phones. Why would you buy a phone that did not meet your needs? And Android IS open source... to the manufacturers. You DO understand that Motorola is a business, right? They're not a non-profit organization serving some altruistic higher calling. They have one obligation- to sell phones, tablets, and accessories at a price that will generate a profit for the stockholders. That's it. They never promised an unlocked bootloader. They have, historically, given free updates to the folk who buy their phones.

They have, historically, given free updates to the folk who buy their phones.

They never put on they commercial that they have a locked bootloader and also i bought my phone when it was on sale so i took the offer and i didn't tought that it will have a locked bootloader (my naive thought, coming from a n1, was oh nice is an android i can do whather i want)
Also is true that a company doesn't have ony obbligation to give some nice support to their customers, but do you really think that people knowing that will ever buy something from them? I'm pretty sure that everyone here that are whining about the bootloader will NEVER suggest a motorola to their friend, parents etc.
They can make us happy without too much hassle, yet they still continue this way and i'm pretty sure that this thing influence the sales( last motorola quarter was not too good even though the razr and the droid 4 are awesome smartphones)
p.s they promised the bootloader unlock: http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...ockable-in-late-2011-where-carriers-allow-it/

i must be doing something wrong on my maxx because i don't even get a day and 1/2.
Seeing how long it takes to develop ics,, which I suspect started even before the product is launched.. I wonder how long it would take for us to get jelly beans..

Oh, where to begin...
Some guy on the internet says Motorola says they'll unlock the bootloader? Sorry... not official word, not corroborated, blah blah blah. About as believable as that guy who was posting bogus ICS pictures here for the last couple weeks.
Maybe you need to check your info... The Razr is the #1 selling smartphone at Verizon... even surpassing the iPhone.
I've had great support on all my Motorola phones (my Razr Maxx is my 4th). On this phone alone, I've had 2 updates, and ICS should be here shortly. On my last phone, it started on Eclair, was updated to Froyo, and then to Gingerbread. And in between and after, it's had other maintenance updates, too. What more do you want... a valet to charge it for you when it gets low?
I'm sorry that you didn't properly research your phone before you bought it. But whose fault is that? It's certainly not Motorola's.

Again, my last phone was updated from Eclair to Froyo to Gingerbread. You have no basis in claiming the Razr will not get Jellybean. Unless you have some proof... which I doubt.

It's official: Photon 4g will remain on GB

I guess we can now close the other ICS update related threads...

Great.. What pricks.
This is such bs, from ICS in Q3, to Q4 to not at all. Such a shame that they screwed us over like this
DOH! Oh well...I love our developers anyway

Yep, apparently development moves backwards over at motorola.
Sure does stink
Atrix 4G, Photon 4G and Electrify will not receive Ice Cream Sandwich, says Motorola http://bit.ly/QalFQx

I'm really over all this upgrade lottery bs. My wife & the kids all want iPhones, so be it...at least they'll get an upgrade (or 2). I'll either go Nexus or Nokia 920...I'm so over this...
Anyone want a Photon & Atrix (modded) Lapdock. I'll likely activate my Pre again.
Anyone else hear that sound?
It's the sound of me not buying a Motorola device ever again...

If you have an unlocked bootloader I'd love your photon lol.
Damn, I actually wanted to believe "Further Plans Coming Soon" was a turning point.........
it's funny. i was an early webOS palm pre supporter back in 2009. and when they announced that the pre wouldn't get webOS 2.0 i was FUMING. and gave up on webOS entirely. along comes my 2011 upgrade and I have 3 choices...the evo 3D that everyone was kind of salty on on account of the 3D being a gimicky and the camera being weak...the galaxy SII when samsung was basically just another android handset oem, amidst tons of critisism about the original galaxy s, especially on sprint where updates were delayed and people complained about lack of support....and the photon 4g.
so, given the issues with the evo3d and the galaxy sii's predecessor, i thought it best to go with the photon. particulary given the anticipated google takeover.
and here we are, on the cusp of october 2012 and the evo 3D and the epic 4g touch BOTH have BEEN had ICS.
what a disaster. i'm done with motorola. DONE
I agree moto really has made a lot of people mad. They are going to lose a bunch of customers. Including my self.

cleverly locked the boot loaders and abandoned the phones. I knew it when they massively shipped out photons to third world counties.
Maybe google trying to destroy the company! who knows!

Maybe.
They will burn it to rise it from ashes and produce only one top Nexus device.
With ICS update, it was obvious.
Keep thinking Motorola will get better. They have sucked for years and will continue to suck. Time to get on ebay and find me a new phone that's not made by Motorola.
F*** YOU MOTOROLA...
i PLEDGE NOT/NEVER TO BUY ANY MOTOROLA PHONE IN FUTURE...
LET'S CREATE A THREAD AT MOTOROLA FORUM AND EXPRESS OUR FEELINGS/EXPECTATIONS...
JOIN AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE, SO THAT THEY WILL COME TO KNOW THEY ARE GOING TO LOOSE A GOOD NUMBER OF CUSTOMERS...
WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE SAY?
Now everybody repeat after me: "I won't buy an Android device without Nexus branding anymore".
No, I am going to buy Xperia T soon.
haha. Sony is doing well with updates now. But I think design is a step backward from Xperia S.
