unlocked bootloader - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Just an FYI, I messaged ASUS on their FB page about the bootloader. They said that the unlocker is ready and they are just waiting for the final legal agreement that will be needed to proceed. Should be seeing it very soon....fingers crossed!

Im glad. But im still gunna wait a little. Probally untill some roms start showing up

I will wait a week or two as well. I want to see if they can find a way around using the Asus bootloader unlocker. I hope we get a lot of developers working on the TFP. The more the merrier

I'm surprised they didn't release it earlier. It'll free them up of people making anymore warranty claims on bad hardware. That's what scares me a bit. I'll wait until ROMs show up first. So far, no hardware issues for me.

im interested in a way around it too. similar thing happened on epic 4g touch. unlocking the bootloader caused a counter to be set off and an ugly triangled appeared in the boot splash (proving unlocker was used). but after a while, they figured out how to do it without the phone recording it was unlocked. i want this for the prime, in case i ever have to send it in

thanks for s/s

@strechwookie - since they are using only a few SBKs for all Transformers I think the SBKs will soon be read from the tool so you can unlock without it.

Could be like the Atrix too, when unlocking it's bootloader you permantly burn a fuse... so while you may be able to "hide" the unlock on the boot screen by returning to stock, a savvy RMA tech could still tell if you had originally unlocked the bootloader.
Sent from my CM7 Atrix 4G

I rather think they are going the HTC way. This tool won't be some kind of *.exe you'll download but a webinterface.
You enter your serialnumber and it generates an unlock code based on the serial number.
This was ASUS will always know if you used their tool or not.
The only chance for us getting away with warranty is to write some kind of keygen which does the same as ASUS' tool.
If they are doing it right this won't be possible.
Of course someone could always try to hack the bootloader AlphaRevX style, but i guess not many would be brave & experienced enough to try that.

normally, and with every other device i have owned i have not hesitated to unlock bootloader and void warranty as i have been confident in its build quality, but with this, not so sure. I have already returned one for the reboot issue, an the current one i have has some kind of screen touch issue where when i touch the screen it creates a sort of watery thing under where i touch- only in one particular area of the screen, and there is a part under that which is too white... hard to explain , but long story longer, i dont trust Asus' build quality to void my warranty totally.
I still believe it should be like the nexus'- why should rooting automatically void ALL warranty? If they stuff up the screen, battery, chip etc how would me running a custom rom affect that (assuming it hasnt- eg. OC to extremes etc)...
so i will be RMAing my prime before unlocking and then i will think about it long and hard and hope for someone to come up with an unofficial way to unlock... plus Asus will probably screw us over like HTC did with their pseudo unlock...

PM sent in return.
Will get this information up by Friday. At CES, and have business meetings all day tomorrow.
I haven't looked at the bootloader since the fastboot files were uploaded, and my system DEFINITELY said unlocked, but I thought there was no way that this meant I was lucky enough to have an unlocked bootloader, and I couldn't find any pictures on google of what a locked bootloader looked like on a RAZR.
After seeing the photo's today....that changed my mind.

Although I was walking to the bathroom, and two of the Moto guys were walking in front of me, and I joked....."You guys want to unlock my bootloader for me??" (before I figured out mine was already unlocked).
They didn't think that was too funny, although they understood.
I have a friend who works at Moto Mobility, and he's told me it REALLY isn't much they can do about it. Verizon has made it very clear to Moto that they can't unlock their bootloaders anytime soon, or they risk losing some pretty hefty advertising subsidies, which HTC actually gave up, as well as Samsung.
Moto isn't in a financial position to give those up....so Verizon has them literally by the balls.
Pretty sad really, Moto's devices, to me, are the best constructed on the market. They also seem to have been supportive of the dev's from day 1, or at least a lot more than other companies....ahem Samsung....
I will say, the Droid 4 was looking like a pretty spectacular device.
The RAZR Maxx is too thick for my liking. It's MUCH thicker than the RAZR, which makes it more like a Droid X2 replacement than a RAZR....but the extended battery life would definitely be cool.
I was talking to the guys at the booth about the Droid 4, as I think I'm going to get one next month, and they were getting some good battery life numbers off that unit. One guy was saying he was getting 12-13 hours with moderate to heavy usage on 4G, which would be exactly what I would be looking for.
I checked out the Galaxy Note, and it's not my cup of tea. I already find the RAZR to be too big at times, and the Note is just WAY too large to try and talk on with the headset next to your ear, and with the way the layout is, there's no advantage to using it in landscape with the virtual keyboard, as the keyboard still takes up the entire screen, and you have to use the next button to go to the next field, which causes me errors from time to time on my RAZR (that's really my chief complaint).
As for other things that I saw, the google TV/Android TV applications are all very cool, and could be something great with a little work.
There was an amazing camera concept that was being shown off....while not a real product, it was definitely awesome....check it out here:
www.wvil.de
Sony had the best glasses free 3D TV's shown here. Their UHD 40" glasses free 3D looked really good. The first glasses free 3D TV I could actually say I wanted to own.
LG is still kicking everyone else's asses in the 3D glasses realm, as their passive 3D TV's were hands down the best at the show.
I know 3D seems to be a gimmick, but there was more information on 3D broadcasting equipment, and content creation than at any previous show by almost triple what we've seen. So 3D is here to stay. There are tablets and phones & overlays (complete garbage) that are being shown off in wild numbers.
Intel's concept phone was KILLER!! I don't know who did the hardware on the outside, but the phone flies. It was running android, and man that thing cooked. With only a single core to, the apps were ripping through. If they didn't have the horrible dance routine to a taped production on stage, they would have had the better booths, but I was laughing the whole time this guys was supposed to be "interacting" with the big screen because it was just bad
There were also some really interesting accessories, although I really hate how EVERYTHING is so focused on the iPhone in that area. There were some interesting set up's for DJ'ing off iPads, where you use 2 on stands, and then an analog mixer. (I have built a full touch screen DJ box, which has a 21.5" multi touch LCD that I use so I'm partial to full touch mixing so Analog doesn't interest me anymore) but it was still cool to see.
Android is really, really pushing the envelope of being a development tool for companies to run their applications on. I saw more products that were built off the Android SDK than I expected. There were GPS units, heart monitors, camera stations, wireless blu ray devices, full car dashboards....all kinds of things that were on top of an android platform.
There was even a 3D printing machine, that you could do rendering in Android and have the machine print from there.
Overall, I do have to say, last year was a bit better in terms of shear number of BIG product reveals. It seemed the cell phone guys were a bit mild this year, and the TV people were focused on 4K UHD resolution, while just kind of waiting for 3D content to catch up so people get more interested.
All in all, still the best show in North America year in and year out, and I got to sit in a Lamborghini Aventador for the first time....wow, that's an amazing machine.
Sounds like a great time! I go to Comic-Con every year but I still need to see CES one day

good question! A picture would definitely be valuable here. Does it says "Factory use only", or "(SE)"?
What version number does it show?
From a computer, can you also try to run:
Code:
moto-fastboot getvar -all
(it will only read and show the value of variables, it won't perform anything more on the phone)
(you can get moto-fastboot.exe from http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GB4VV9ZW )

Dude they didn't exactly make it super easy to unlock the bootloader. There are going to be many "failures" as it may never be unlocked. The trouble is so many people get all excited and start asking for the "files" as if it's been figured out whenever they see a thread like this.
gogo unlock!
I only need to know the status code that you can read on your bootloader. Then I'll say to you all if this is useful for unlocking us all or not.

I doubt anyone is working on it. Asus has already said they will unlock it. It would be nice if a dev could figure it out so we didn't have to possibly void our warranty, but hacking an encrypted bootloader is not easy without a leak from Asus or direct help from them.
Yep we need a leak, bc 128 bit encryption ain't no picnic

What we should do is start asking Asus when are they going to unlock it for us. They claimed once ICS dropped we would get access. I have wrote on there FB and twitter profiles and asked when are we going to get it unlocked. I think we need to ban together again and spam the crap out of them to get what they said they were going to give us.
We have bigger fish to fry, let them get this thing working correctly first, we have root, just have to wait a little bit. I read on here somewhere about a February release time frame..........

I agree. As much as I'd love an unlock tool now, I'd say we should all wait until most of the problems settle down a bit before we go spamming them about it.
Yeah, but we could have the developers here working for us as well. A lot of them could do better jobs than most companies to fix the problems. Having asus working on one end and developers here, we could accomplish so much. Once the bootloader is unlocks it will still take some time for the developers to do there thing. So the earlier they have access, the better IMO
Sorry to revive a dead thread but I didn't want to make a new one.
Why wouldn't devs want to unlock it? That way we don't have to void our warranty. Also, how do we know it will be a complete "unlock"? If you have looked at HTC's unlock tool, you'll know what I mean. If you use HTC's unlock tool, it makes it a ***** to flash kernels, cant be done through recovery, and they cannot flash radios with their unlock tool. How do we know that asus won't pull the same ****. This is just my opinion though. I'm not a dev by any means.
Sent from my ICS lovin 3D!!!

I'm sure the devs would love to just be able to unlock it but the encryption they use is so good you basically need Gary Key or someone from Asus to leak us the bootloader encryption key. Brute force methods would apparently take longer than the life of the device.
I just wonder how many devices would not have been returned if we could do a proper wipe on our own had the bootloader not been encrypted.

I flash kernels every couple of days with my HTC unlocked method Evo 3D. The only thing that sucks is that I have to be at a PC to use the fastboot method to get into recovery. There is also an app that you can use to flash a kernel. I haven't tried it yet, but I heard it works great. I haven't tired flashing a radio yet though so I can't comment on that. If it was just a locked bootloader that would be one thing, but they (ASUS) put a 128bit encryption on the bootloader as well. It would take a long time for them to break it. Maybe with the unlock tool, someone could see how they use it and find out how to break it with out using the tool by ASUS. But we won't know until the tool is out and available to the public. I am hoping once it's available, and rom's/tweaks/kernels/ect start being made, more developers will buy a TFP and join in to make this tablet into a beast!!
I think Asus unlocking the bootloader would be a brilliant move for them. They would get rid of sooooo many warranty claims. It would be the single best thing they can do to keep the TP from becoming a major financial black hole for them.

Asus like any company comes down to being a business and businesses want money not to please every customer corporations are greedy and that's the facts
But don't you see ? If they allow you to unlock your bootloader, the moment you do that you are waiving away your rights to warranty. So one less warranty claim to worry about. One less warranty expense going against what must already be a very deep hole in their earnings.
It better be fully unlocked with an nvflash recovery! Otherwise I am returning it both of them and the dock
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yeah, I know there has to be a lot of people who wouldn't have returned theirs if they could have simply downgraded back to Honeycomb while the issues with ICS were worked out. That along with it voiding everyone's warranties would have meant a whole lot Primes not getting returned.
Asus is in the business of making money though so apparently they make more of it by having a wifi tablet locked down while the returns roll in than they would otherwise. I can't imagine too many devices being bricked because of flashing roms but apparently ASUS has done the research that it is cheaper for them to do it this way.
It certainly isn't carrier influence, which I could see in the case of a 3G/4G device, but this is a wifi only device. No carrier to screw over here with tethering or whatever.

donating without an unlocked boot loader available is of no use..since the boot loader is locked down that means no custom roms...and even if CM gets a prime right now the boot loader is not only locked but 128 bit encrypted... once asus releases the boot loader unlock tool then we can start to think about donating to get them a device.

ASUS has promised a boot unlocker will be released relatively soon. How long is "soon" remains to be determined
By donating/posting interest on their forum, we're signaling our interest. Of course they can't actually *do* anything til ASUS releases an unlocker.... but by starting *now* with an interest/donation campaign, we will have a bigger presence than just starting off then.

I'm happy to donate to custom ROMS once they start popping up - one can never have too many good customization options. However, I would still *love* to see CM9 come to the Prime.

donating without an unlocked boot loader available is of no use..since the boot loader is locked down that means no custom roms...and even if CM gets a prime right now the boot loader is not only locked but 128 bit encrypted... once asus releases the boot loader unlock tool then we can start to think about donating to get them a device.

Donating right now isn't useless. From what I can tell, Primes are still hard to come buy. If the CM team doesn't have the money to buy one right now, they won't even if they do happen to see one in stock. If we do donate now, they'll have the money and can grab one as soon as they find one. I'd rather have them grab one earlier and just sit on it, than have them struggling to find one after Asus unlocks the bootloader.

Maybe it's just me, but that could be because there wasn't a CM8. So if a tablet has ran CM in the past, it was most likely CM7 which wasn't made for tablets. With CM9, it will be an OS that is made for tablets, so it should be better. That's just my guess though.
I would gladly donate, but I don't see ASUS actually unlocking the device anytime soon. They simply made a statement about it to stop the social media attack.
I'll gladly support CM9, since supporting Transformer Prime will be a lot of work, especially if keyboard and custom functions of IPS+ and performance modes are concerned.
And if they will state that they will commit to Transformer Prime, I'll gladly support them. But without the unlocker and considering the complications of Transformer Prime, I would first have to believe it would ever actually happen. Tegra 3 is also an obstacle.
This thread is more relevant once ASUS actually gives us an unlocker, but of course CM9 is worth supporting even if they won't support TF201 fully featured.

You make a very valid point:
CM7 was Gingerbread - an OS made for phones
Honeycomb was closed source, so there was no CM8
ICS is open source, so CM9 is the natural progression. ICS is for tablets and phones
CM9 will naturally be better than CM7, simply because ICS is optimized from the ground up by Google for the tablet experience. Gingerbread was tweaked into working on a tablet.

I am passionately betting they will release a boot unlocker program soon. I know it's counter-intuitive, but here's why:
1)They said they would, publicly. They know who they were dealing with, for the most part. They know every word they release will be scrutinized. They know they'll be slammed again if they don't release it soon - say in the next few months. If it goes farther than say March at the latest, the pitchforks and torches will start appearing again...
2) Gary Key - ASUS must be having a change of heart somewhere deep inside it's corporate monolith. How often do you see an official ASUS Technical Marketing Manager stroll into a forum like this and ask for help!?
To come to XDA asking for help, and *NOT* release a boot unlocker after publicly declaring they would would be a very, very foolish PR move. Even though ASUS has made plenty of mistakes over the Prime, they're not that short sighted. XDA is the lion's den that spawned the social media attack - I doubt they'd set foot inside if they didn't intend to release a boot unlocker.

I definitely agree with you there, and think the plethora of issues that Gary Key is trying to address trump writing a boot unlocker program any day.
It's probably "every engineer on deck" in ASUS' Prime dept right now, trying to resolve these issues.
Nonetheless - If you're up for donating I think it's safe to say sooner's always better than later-
Like you said yourself, CM9 can use all the help it can get

[outdated]Spare Parts have arrived at service centers

Thought I might as well open a new thread 'cause everybody should have access to the good news easily:
Gary Key stated in his unofficial thread that spare parts are shipped to the service centers around the world:
The spare parts have arrived at service center in Switzerland. In my case it is a new mobo. The technician just called back and told me he would repair and test the tablet this afternoon.
Still missing mine since 120207
You might give me a thanks if this info makes you happy!
Update 120315:
To me it seems the mobo is the fix we all have been waiting for. It got replaced with my Prime which failed the final test at the repaircenter. My wifi-thing is wrecked, so they ordered a new one. This means: they got my device five weeks ago and they knew already from Asus there would be a new mobo released in the future so they assumed my trashy wifi (bad receiption, bluetoothlag and finaly unable to connect to my home router) was related to the faulty mobo design. Be sure it is, unfortunately my wifi is crap as well. I guess they found out after they'd assembled and reassenbled the tablet - lol -
The service center is contacting ASUS now after I complained mildly for being pushed aside during more than a month.
Well, that's why I hate frigging computers they all suck!!!!
Hopefully I can keep you updated otherwise I just got sick of it and my androidexperiment will have died.
Nokia N9 Meego ist the best, no frigging buttons just plain swipe. but this is another sad story ...
Zcech Rep. service centre? Or where?
What was the issue you RMAed it for?
I RMA'd mine to Czech, sent it friday morning:
Picked up Friday morning
Arrived in Manchester Friday evening
Arrived in Germany on the Sat Morning
Left Germany 3am this morning (Monday)
Arrived in Austria at 6am
Arrived in Czech at 8am
Return to shipper at 9:46am
Does this literally mean, they got mine, and have either:
1. just sent it straight back to me or
2. just sent me a brand new one and will deal with my old one later on
Any ideas?
@kevinm2k
Depends where you getting that tracking info, if its from couriers site it looks like it didn't get to service centre and for some reason being returned to sender
I went through the official return system with UPS, the tracking is from UPS here:
http://wwwapps.ups.com/WebTracking/...ns=yes&loc=en_GB&tracknum=1Z7634WR9390800355#
If I get the same one back unfixed then I won't be giving them another chance to RMA it and will demand a full refund - so hopefully that isn't the case!
So just wondering since I've sent Gary 3 different pm's weeks apart with no response what so ever... if our bootloaders are unlocked do we still get the fix? Or are we just screwed?

When you unlocked your bootloader, you agreed to invalidate your warranty and to no longer receive any support from ASUS. I don't quite understand why you are asking this question.

You agreed to Asus not working on your Prime. It was a permanent decision as stated in the agreement you made with them by unlocking the bootloader.

This is exactly why I haven't unlocked yet. If there's new components or motherboards to be swapped out, I'd rather get that done first. Then have my fun unlocking and flashing roms. But it gives me time to let the roms mature more and build confidence in decision of unlocking and the consequences involved. I'm in no rush really. Stock rom working great for me. Plus with root(which I can easily remove if I want) and overclocking @ 1.6Ghz, I'm enjoying the very fast n slick stock experience.

Thank you, I don't understand why people who read the terms, and still decided to go ahead and unlock the device anyway, then want start a thread/post complaining that it's not fair. This is one of the reasons why Asus didnt want to unlock the bootloader to begin with, because no matter how you explain it to people, they still don't seem to be able to comprehend. Gary probably wont respond, because it was clearly stated that you VOID ALL updates/help
First off no one cried it wasn't fair. I understand the difference between not providing additional support and not fixing a pre existing well known initial design flaw. Do you guys?
Edit: just thought I would add, the first two messages sent to Gary were BEFORE I unlocked.

I agree you wasn't crying about it. I'd still give it a shot to see if they fix device. Hopefully they would show discretion and make it on a case by case decision on whether to fix or not. Just like places like best buy n Gamestop said they wouldn't take returns past due date, alot have been doing so. MAYBE ASUS will let some people slide also.
But we do have a mini epidemic of people, not you, blindly unlocking device(thinking its part of rooting..lol) and not realizing consequences involved. Like no more OTA updates and warranty voided.

I don't get it.
Everywhere dealing with the unlocker including itself says what it does and what it's for. Amazes me people just jump in like that.
Once we start seeing results I may send mine in. Every day that goes by it gets harder not to go on and install my own antenna lol

I am pretty sure that "returned to shipper" shows up in this case because the UPS label was created by Asus, so UPS "thinks" it was returned to the shipper.
It shows that it was signed for, so they do have it.

Yeah I hear ya. Seems like you can't say anything in these forums without getting flammed one way or another. I do completely understand that by unlocking my bootloader that I have no more support from Asus. That's why I've done research on how to flash and also why I have an account here so if I really screw something up I can ask someone much smarter than myself how to fix it =)
That is also why I bought a square trade accidental warranty so if I burn my cpu by flashing some of the awesome custom overclocked kernels, ill be covered.
I do however have the expectation that my wifi works to at least a similar level of my cell phone. I am not naive and I don't expect it to go toe to toe with my laptop but definitely similar range and throughput of my other mobile devices.
If Asus is making actual hardware changes because of a manufacture defect, I expect to get those very same changes.

how long after purchase can you get squaretrade for prime? but yeah its only fair if it was a manufacturing defect. I would think Asus should let unlocked people slide on that. maybe Gary can clear that up. not sure he will though because it would have to be worded correctly so not to be improperly used against Asus since alot of legal stuff around that. its a fair question to ask though. if you haven't already, you should ask in his new thread. you could could send another pm but I know his pm box is swamped with pm's.
at least with squaretrade you could always find a reason to send it in and get a replacement unit. which will either come with new components or be eligible for warranty since its not unlocked.
we have to remember this though. Gary did state that the new component pieces was only going to be implemented on a device by device basis. so basically only if their testing shows it to be faulty, will that device qualify for new component piece. its not like every device sent in will get it. as not all devices will qualify if they already meet Asus factory spec from new testing.
plus we not sure of what this "Great Prime News" coming up is.
I believe 90 days after purchase if bought retail. Don't quote me though as this is my first one. Bought mine with the amazon deal, I figured I've dropped it twice before and got away with just minor scratches but one of these times it will be broken gorilla glass lol.

Hey, my apologies if I came off rude benefit14snake, your question was indeed a valid one. It's just that I've seen so many post from people complaining about not being able to update after unlocking their tablets. Asus should fix ALL devices that have weak wifi, or they will end up losing customers in the long run.

Could have sworn it was 30 >.>
If it's 90 even I could still get SquareTrade

whats happened with development?!

i think me, like many others, are checking these forums frequently to see if any updates or news to the roms for HDX, especially since the last waves of rooting happening all the way to newest OTA update, however the heat has seemingly died off with the hopes of updates, and that glimmer of hope with bootloader unlock that we all waiting for. I understand as long as this doesn't happen we are still limited to the Amazon kernel.
im not a developer but a savvy user like many others so im in no position to measure the difficulty of creating updates for the device, however with the floodgate opened before i was really hoping for lots of new roms and updates to existing, coupled with powerful hardware at cheap prices, and what seems to be wide audience, but didnt seem to be the case.
does anyone think there's any hope left for this device? should we just jump on to Tegra K1 bandwagon soon?

Yeah, not only does it delay Amazon's ability to patch the hole, but it also helps the developers of the exploit earn the money they deserve. I'm just currently concerned after that argument in the fire phone thread they may not be releasing the exploit due to legal reasons, which is bothersome.
I don't know but it really sucks and I also know this thread is not development related. As far as being in the development section I mean.

im sorry but thats a sorry excuse. theyre gonna charge $25 so that a multi billion dollar company cant find out? if it slows them down itll slow them down for a couple of hours and thats it.
lets be realist... theyre charging so that they can profit. theres nothing wrong with that and i dont have a problem with it but its a lil insulting if they expect us to believe that
I check every couple of weeks or so, but honestly just running the xpose framework module makes me happy. The only thing I was missing was the play store, and it allows me to have that. The Fire user interface has actually grown on me.

The argument in that thread about whether bootloader unlocking is legal in the US or not is not even touching on the real issue. First, bootloader unlocking IS legal. Second, what is not legal though is hacking a device put out by a company and then charging other people and making money off of your exploit. And even if it were legal, it is against XDA TOS for members to charge for things like ROMs, kernel, bootloader unlock, etc. We can donate sure, but specifically charging people for access is a no-no.
Even still, Id pay for it. I really want to see some real development going on for this tablet. The Thor and Appolo gapps ROMs are great, but it would be nice to have a true AOSP build working.

Hi hashcode. Any info you can feed us would be appreciAted. I understand things are hush hush for numerous reasons but people here are starting to lose interest in our device and the longer we wait for a unlock the more talent we lose and, undoubtedly, potential donaters.
Your teasing and previous posts show u have some inside knowledge of the unlock. Any info would be great but specificAlly what is the snag the devs have run into? And I know it's rude to ask but how much longer are we lookin at for release?
I know u dint owe us anything but we thank u for ur support.
I'd really like to participate in today's Fire Sale (pun intended), but I'm not keen on getting a device that can't be unlocked. Decisions, decisions...
