[Q] Quick question about flashing roms - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I am going to unlock my bootloader and flash a custom rom.
I was just wondering whether or not i need at external sd card present to flash and use a rom.
And also i know that in CM7, it switches the around the internal and external sd card.
If I were to flash CM7, would I mess up my phone if I flashed it w/out an external sd card?
So, in summary I have 2 questions:
1) Do I need an external sd card to flash and use a rom(other than CM7)?
2) Do I need an external sd card to flash and use CM7?

1) No

Just put the flashable.zip on the root of your /sdcard.
As soon as you flash the CM7 Rom and login to you Google Account... before you install any apps, go to Settings -> CyanogenMod Settings -> Applications -> Use Internal Storage

THANKS!
OK Thanks!

can i root/flash custom rom/kernel without sd card?

hello.
i don't have sd card in my SGS I9100G, but I'd like to root the phone soon.
I read few threads in here, they required me to install the .zip files in sd card.
Is it possible for me to install the .zip in internal memory instead in sd card?

Yes, a lot of the time sdcard refers to internal memory. An external SD card is never required.
For flashing with a zip file (over cwm), the zip file have to reside on internal usb storage !!
For restore and backup purposes it is better you have no sd-card, because the actual cwm have problems with sd cards.
cwm V 4.* ==> no problems
cwm V 5.* ==> problems (kitchen doesnt work 100%, backup/restore problems)
If you are using a sd-card, you will get problems with cwm 5.*
thanks guys,
i thought the one they referring the sd card is for ext sd card.
thanks again guys for quick response

Best practice for formatting internal SD Card?

Hi guys,
I'd like to format my SD car prior to flashing a new ROM as it's all very messy now with tons of random old folders and such. Is there a preferred way to do this such as through CWM?
Also, if i were to format the SD card it would also delete the ROM zip file that i would be flashing. Is installing the ROM zip from my external SD card ok?
Thanks

1. Yes. Just use format internal sd card or (/emmc) option in cwm.
2. Yes, Installing from external is fine, it doesn't make any difference.

[Q] Just encrypted my device, did it encrypt external SD card also?

I'm a custom ROM on Android 4.2.2 and used the Settings > Privacy > Encrypt phone feature. What exactly did this do, did the encrypt the internal SD card, the external SD card, the entire filesystem (i.e. root of filesystem), or some combination?
If it didn't encrypt my external SD card, how can I do so? But if it did, how can I access the contents of my external SD card (after providing my PIN/password) from a laptop when I put the SD card in it? Would I just mount it like I do any other encrypted USB drive with LUKS?
If not, then isn't it risky because if my phone gets broken and I must start from a new ROM, then I've lost my most recent data (backups could be a few days old). Or lets's say someone flashes a new ROM, the new ROM wouldn't be able to read the card, or would it be able to if you use the same PIN/password?

Encrypted internal /storage/sdcard0 cannot be read after installing new ROM while using same password, just checked.

sd card as internal storage

So i have this little question. If i install my sd card as internal storage can i then still flash custom roms? I was thinking maybe the sd card will think my phone is a different one if i install a custom rom?
Thanks
Good question.
I'm currently using my SD card as adopted storage in CM13 and TWRP is able to see files on the SD card just fine.
However, after flashing the ROM, I'm not sure if Android will pick up that the card is adopted storage and just pull in the apps, or if it will make you format the SD card. I would think that the latter would only apply after a wipe of /data, but hopefully someone can chime in with actual experience on the matter.
