No indicator LED... - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

For my use, an LED is very useful to indicate missed calls or waiting message. It's a shame that the Note does not have it.
In the international Note forum, there is this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1389394
I like the idea of using the buttons for notification. I hope it can be made to work for the ATT version... I rather use it than NoLED.

Even if Internation version has notification LED, AT&T version will drop it. AT&T firmly believe there shall never be a need for notification LEDs. It goes out of its way to remove the LED from most of its OEM phones.

If you want an indicator on the screen, try No Led. I am not really a fan of it though as I feel it drains the battery.
If you want the buttons to light up, try BLN control, I am a huge fan of this as most Android phones don't have Led notification.

Haha, yeah At&t hates the idea of a good feature for some reason.

How have you gathered this? My inspire 4g which is based on the Desire HD, has an LED..
Are you familiar with blackberries, and the ones offered by at&t? They all have LEDs.

This. It's not AT&T's fault; Samsung just doesn't put notification LEDs on their devices any more. The Nexus is the only exception in the Galaxy line, which you have to figure was at Google's insistence.
Using the the capacitive keys' backlights as a substitute, usually referred to as BLN, is a common workaround, but it is always hacked in by devs on this side and not officially supported. I personally never use BLN because, at least on the GS2, it requires holding a wakelock for as long as you want the lights to blink, so it isn't worth the extra battery drain for me. Still, I'm sure somone will implement a kernel with BLN support for the AT&T Note eventually.

Some manufacturers have better relationship with AT&T than others, e.g. Samsung vs HTC. These phones are all custom made per carrier requirements. For example, original Galaxy S, only AT&T version lacks any physical home button. Galaxy S2, Sprint version has notification LED while AT&T has no notification LED, nor physical home button. Same goes for GNote, no LED, not physical home button.
If AT&T wants a notification LED, Samsung will add it. That's how simple it is. AT&T wants NFC hardware but remove all the software stack, Samsung did it.

I forgot the Sprint GS2 has a notification LED; you're right about that. Still, that device is an exception in many ways and is definitely the only such GS2 variant of the dozens out there. Maybe if AT&T had really pushed Samsung to add an LED it would have been possible, but it would be a hardware change compared to already-shipping versions of the Note that certainly would have delayed release. The chassis for the AT&T Note is nearly identical to the international one, except for the change to the button layout.
That change from capacitive menu-physical home-capacitive back to capacitive menu-home-back-search that the Note has was standardized on the first generation Galaxy S, and has been the case for every Galaxy phone I've seen that has been ported to the US. And it isn't JUST the AT&T version; every US version of the Galaxy S (Cappy, Epic Touch from Sprint, Galaxy S 4G from T-Mobile, not sure offhand if VZW has one) has the same four capacitive button layout.
Obviously the carriers demand certain customizations, such as branding and bloatware, and I don't know anything about the relationship between Samsung and AT&T vs. HTC and AT&T or anything like that. But the lack of a notification LED has been the norm for Samsung devices for a long time now, and it is pretty ridiculous to blame AT&T for it. Especially when there are so many legitimate reasons to hate AT&T.

This will be my biggest challenge, no led light notification. I'm going to need a support group thread started here or something. Why are those damm lights so addicting.

What? Verizon, t-mobile, and sprint SGS have physical home buttons??? In what universe? lol
I think your pointing the blame a little too much on at&t. There is an article on engadget about the process it takes for a phone to be fully developed. You should read that. Adding a feature even as miniscule as a LED, isn't so "simple" as you would think. It also doesn't seem to be the case of at&T's fault entirely that it doesn't have a LED, since many other devices on the carrier have the feature. More than likely the decision comes because of some production limitation of sorts (similar to CPU change on lieu of radio or something). If the blame should be pointed anywhere, blame it on the politics of the nations communication infrastructure, because really there's always something on some device, on some carrier that makes it a bit inferior to its international counterpart-- it seems.

I use an app from the market called Missed Message Flasher Free. It will flash the screen at any interval, vibrate and also play a sound. I find it is more effective anyway, because I have it set up to play a "ping..." every minute if there is a missed event and I can hear it from another room.
You can set it up to notify you of any particular event you like...

I got over that after years with a BB. On my SkyRocket I use NOLED it is fantastic and is NOT a battery hog if you configure it correctly. Check it out on the Market plus its free or a friendly donation.

Sounds cool but also like a battery killer? How was it on your battery?

Doesn't seem bad at all. Remember, it doesn't actually do anything until you miss an event, and then usually only for a few minutes before you're alerted. If your worried, you can disable the vibrate and/or screen flash. It's really the ping that gets your attention. I have never seen the app make the "What has been using my battery" list, anyway...

Why is your SGS2 disappointing may i ask?
are you sure it does not work? because i heard the original galaxy s does indeed wake up if you have an alarm set and you turn the phone off. the alarm will still go off. not all android phones do this. only nokia and samsung symbian phones historically have this feature, but i remember samsung brought it to its galaxy s android phone.
May I ask why you not just try????????????????????????? FYI my SGS II does not ring when turned off. I think Nokia phones actually are some off the few phones that ring when turned off.

My Galaxy S's alarm never worked if the phone was off, and from what I remember on the SGS forum no-one else's did either.
Personally I put the phone in flight mode at night - alarm works fine.

Whether those phones count as smartphones or not is quite debatable. I've never heard anyone call the Nokia N95/N97 models smartphones and they're probably the most well equipped "dumbphones" to date.

Reading this forum makes me think twice on buying this phone... In 4 days it will be available at my orange store but reading about all these problems... First of all, what do you mean by not ringing when it's off?!? This is absurd! From my nokia 3310 to my present Samsung Omnia 2 all the phones had/has this SIMPLE feature! Why the sgs2 doesn't have it?I'm used to charge my phone at night(turned off) and get the wake up ring in the morning Second, random shut off??? This is at least a deal breaker! Third, camera focusing problems??? Display problems?
Question: Are we talking about an expensive phone or a cheap one ?

1) No android smartphone can use the alarm when it's off. I don't think the iThing can either...
2) Random reboots or shut off??? What reboots? Consider user error, or people overclocking to stupid levels, I've yet to see one in 3 weeks.
3) Camera focussing issues??? Best camera I've ever had on a phone. Rivals a high end digital compact for at-a-glance sharpness
4) Display problems? If you know what a SAMOLED is, you should be fine. No issues here AFAIK
Don't bother with the topics about problems turning you off. Think of a random product, go to some forum where they talk about the product, and you'll see enough issues.

There's no need to be angry, especially since you haven't bought the phone yet, and if you're upset about these problems (the random reboot is a faulty unit btw, so if it happens justget it replaced), you should definitely not buy it.
Or you shouldn't get a smartphone for that matter, since the more complicated a device is, the more likely you are to run into problems. Maybe the iPhone has less faults, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't ring when it's off either, or you could look at nokia's feature phones like the E52, N95 or N97, which will also be cheaper.

1. True
2. Yes, this happens to me every now and then. Also a whole bunch of other people have this issue, whether it be faulty RAM chips, loose batteries or generally bad flashing.
3. The camera is good for a phone, but it doesn't and will never rival a real camera, due to the small and cheap lens, lack of optical zoom and small sensor.
4. Hearf of the yellow tint issue? Every SGS2 to date has this, more or less. There's yet to be posted a single photo of a display without this issue in low ambient light and low backlight.

@BlueScreenJunky not that angry as it might led the impression ...but to be honest I am a little disapointed because I've been waiting for this phone to be release for some time now.
About iPhone...I like the looks but that's all. I hate restrictive companies so I cannot pay for a company's product to be able to use it only their way. I like freedom I pay, then it's mine to do whatever I want to do with it.
Nokia N97 is a pain (no offense to those who own one)...but one of my colleges had it...it's a realllyyy slow device.
Oh, and I don't want to be a snob, but money is no issue in this case...it becomes annoying to me when I pay for something that it is said to be great and in the end I realize that is less than average or it is faulty because the company who produced it didn't pay enough attention to quality.
@prodygee you are right, but then again judging by the price of the device and by the most reviews that say it's the best phone at the moment ... these hardware problems (shut offs, display problems etc) should not exist.
Anyway, for the moment I talk based on what I read...so it's not that relevant.
Next week I'll go and test it myself in real life. Being a human and since we humans are known to be able to adapt to almost anything I can adapt myself to the lack of wake-up ring and some other minor problems(except display and shut off prbls.)

Problems with the amaze so far...

Here are a few problems I have with the amaze so far...
1) Fluctuating service. I hate this. I will have all the bars showing and then all of a sudden I get no service. What's up with that? The sensation would at least holds two bars at all times. (Oh and no wifi calling!)
2) Overheating issue. This phone gets too hot for no reason. For example I browse for 15 minutes and bam..its really hot. I make sure I exit apps by hitting the back button and my brightness is at 15%. There's no excuse for this.

4) wifi turning off??? I could be on wifi for a good hour and everything is OK, then I turn on the phone again to use it and I'm not connected to wifi anymore. I manually turn wifi on and off to get it to work again.
5) On the bottom in between the menu and back key my amaze has some light leaking through. Its tiny. I didn't notice it until it was completely dark but its there and now I can't help but keep staring at it. I wish I had a camera to take a picture of it.
6) Lastly and the most annoyong thing for me is a clicking sound. When I pick up the phone it sounds like something getting snapped in place. And its almost everytime. Wtf is that. haha.

the no wifi calling thing sucks, will be fixed with root/update so meh
my battery drains about 50% when i'm sleeping, though this may be to mediocre service that goes in and out, going to try and shut mobile network off tonight and see if it fixes the issue
Though I agree with most of the other "problems" ya'll have listed...
I was told by 3 representatives, and one sales person (who sold me the phone) that you have to activate the new sim card included with the device to take advantage of the new wifi-calling that T-Mobile is rolling out (this includes the new GSII on t-mo). - I spoke with so many because none of them could activate the new sim correctly...and were baffled themselves as to why it was so difficult...haha.
Honestly, I havent been able to test wifi calling because the place where I'm renting has never worked with mobile devices, except for apple devices (of course...haha). I may report back here later when i go somewhere else with wifi.
Just wanted to pass on some info I was told by 4 separate people - they all claimed that's what a memo showed on their system when they pull up the AMAZE and GSII.
I come from a mytouch 4g, i have the same issue, suddenly i have no service then it's back on again. Never had that with the mytouch...
Well, I have had mine since launch day. I have a little but not much light bleed. I have had no heating issues. Last night out at bars I saw the signal issue. One sec I could speed test and pull down 14. Then I would notice no 4G symbol, try to speed test again and it would say no signal. Still love it though, nice and fast!!
My buttons light up when it's dark, but not when it's light. Is there anyway to turn this light sensor off and keep these lights on so I can see my home, menu etc buttons?

The sim is not controlling the software, but it can affect what information is communicated with t-mobile.
I don't know what you mean by you don't have this feature. Among other ways to activate the hotspot capability, you should find the "Wi-Fi Hotspot" app on the device.
Just to repeat/clarify my original statement/post: The Amaze 4G and the GS II (according to others) allow you to activate the wifi hotspot feature, have your other wifi-enabled devices connect to your phone, but when you try to access the internet with those wifi-enabled devices, you are prompted to upgrade your plan to include the $15/mo. plan.
I hope this is clear to all.
Te whole service popping in and out is starting to drive me nuts!!!! 3 bars of 4g then nthing! 1 bar of 4g then it turns into 2 bars of 2g! WTH!?!?!? Never had soo many reception issues on ANY of my Tmo phones!
Dosent seem to matter where I am when this happens as it happens often, far too often!
I have to assume that of all the connection point inside the back cover of the phone at least ONE of them is some sort of antenna?????
Cmon Tmo?!?!?
Even if it does warm up, I doubt that you will feel it if you put it in a case. Unless the phone is burning up..then yeah.
I am coming from a HTC sensation 4G and it had WiFi calling and WiFi hotspot feature.
The manual that comes with the amaze shows how to use WiFi calling also the one on HTC's site,
If I could put the sensation Rom on the amaze I would be happy as the sensation had what I want working,
I love the feel of the Amaze it feels much more masculine and fits nice in my big hands I find my self not mistakenly touching the softkey's as much.
Also I can seem to figure out where 4gb or the Rom is as it shows only 9gb for storage and 2gb for something else
On another note I have seen a post that shows an Amaze with WiFi calling, the had an earlier firmware,

why would you get flamed. only 99% of the people on this site know more about the devices theyre holding and things their carrier offers to them then the actual employees, one of the most known things probably being the grace period you have to return/swap out your phone if you want... noooo, no reason to be flamed.

To those who are experiencing issues with the Amaze especially after returning it a million times before buyers remorse is up, I recommend testing out the GS2 aka Hercules. Other than the resolution this phone is really great. The resolution isn't that noticeable unless you have OCD.

I jumped ship to the GSII. So far I'm happier. The amaze does have more bells and whistles but it was a bit heavy for me and the GS II has got - not substantially - but improved battery life and a more visually appealing screen. Also my eyes aren't great, so I actually appreciate the lower resolution screen which keeps the icons bigger. I can see the pixels easier than on the qhd of the amaze, but i have to be "looking for them" to really notice.
Some people are having better luck with their Amaze so just like a ton of other companies out there these days...there's a big quality control issue.
Looking service is really getting on my nerves now and i dont like this any more. Wonder if there will a fix for this from HTC or Tmobile

[Q] Any major issues yet?

hey everyone, i've had my Captivate since it was released last year, but i really want to upgrade it. i'm a little underwhelmed by the specs of the Galaxy Nexus when compared to the SGSII (which is what i was waiting to compare before i just purchased it).
anyways, are there any nagging issues that i should know about before upgrading (like the GPS issue with the Cappy, even though mine always worked perfectly)?
thanks.
Speaking for myself, this has been an absolutely solid device from the moment I got it. Couldn't be happier...

no major issues yet but the only thing that people have complained about is some screen issues. There have been lines that seemed to be burned into the screen when you view dark images. I have one but i rarely notice it so I'm not concerned and its not a big deal for me. otherwise, i think thats pretty much it. Any other issue that you have can be checked while at the store so you can exchange it while you are there.

Nope. I haven't even found any minor issues. Rock solid, all the way around.
Only problem I've had is the AP Mobile widget eating up my data even after I turned it off and set the refresh settings to none. Ended up having to root/freeze it just to stop. Samsung and AT&T were of no help. Reading a forum or two here and there shows I'm not alone - but I don't think it is extremely widespread.

I've found the AP Mobile application to be terrible on every device I've used.
Based on my recent experience, I'd have no problem believing that.
I never consider AT&T bloatware to be a "major issue" - even though it's a major deficiency in the out-of-the-box experience, as long as it's fixable, it's not major to me.

If it ends up sending someone over a data limit and costing money, I'd say its a pretty big deal. At least something to keep an eye on.
As a launch-day Captivate user myself, believe me the SGSII is a night and day difference. Especially in the speed and battery departments. Even running stock is a much smoother experience than many of the custom ROMs I had flashed on my Cap.
The build quality seems to be very good, even for an initial run.

Same here, this thing is great. Fast, smooth and great battery. I've ran Cognition and now UnNamed, both are smooth.
I never had any problems with my Captivate other than battery. Unlocked it for my wife to use on T-Mobile and she is getting 24-30 hours on a charge w/3-4hrs display time. The only difference in the set up is the amount of emails and texts when I used it was more than she uses it.
By and large I have had few problems. This is the phone that the Captivate should have been (good GPS and compass and LED flash and front facing camera).
Once I had a problem with GPS acquiring a lock, even with very adequate SNRs as shown by GPS Test (Chartcoss), but it immediately reverted back to great after a reboot.
Occasionally the Facebook app will lag is some aspects, but I can't tell if it is the app or the network.
To OP,
Yes, there are some issues that I have with this phone. Some big, some small but all in all - IMHO not deal breakers...

When AT&T announced official release of the SG2 on Oct 2., I made a beeline to two local AT&T stores and both sold out, but they did have the unit on display and when I comared the iphone 4 (non S) vs. the SG2, I instantly fell in love with the Lighter Weight, Larger screen and super thin size of the SG2 over the iphone 4 (non S)...
The problem at hand to answer your question is here:
1. No FM radio - Originally advsertised as an available feature on AT&T website but has been removed. Available on internation i1900 but not on AT&T SGH-I777
2. Samsung DIVE - Samsung's version of lost/stolen phone support *FREE* to all Samsung mobile device yet *CRIPPLED* by AT&T...
3. No visual Voicemail - But then again this is an Android issue not Captivate to SG2 (remember I'm coming off an iphone 3G)
4. NFC missing - Confirmed by AT&T that it was disabled but *supposedly* to return at a later date via firmware update...??? Will update *NERF* the SG2 to comply with APPLE's suit about copyright infringment (this is mere SPECULATION from my part ONLY!!!!)
Makes me MAD that AT&T strips out useful and FREE tools and installs crappy BLOATWARE like AT&T NAVIGATE that I cannot remove wthout ROOTING the phone... Sorry not ready to that just yet but the promise of FREE tethering has me thinking about it...
Samsung has already had to *MOD* some Tablets & phones(?) overseas because one foreign court ruled against Samsung claiming that their OS too closely resembles the IOS and a firmware MOD fixed the SCROLLING method to further distinguish Touchwiz from IOS... Could Samsung/AT&T firmware update that includes NFC then also NERF the UI (if they lose in U.S. Court Case???)
Sorry for rambling on but I think I've answered your questions about my pet peeves with the unit so far I'm really REALLY like the SG2 and after 2 weeks I do NOT have buyers remorse nor do I feel an attraction to the iphone 4S...

hey everyone, i've had my Captivate since it was released last year, but i really want to upgrade it. i'm a little underwhelmed by the specs of the Galaxy Nexus when compared to the SGSII (which is what i was waiting to compare before i just purchased it).
anyways, are there any nagging issues that i should know about before upgrading (like the GPS issue with the Cappy, even though mine always worked perfectly)?
thanks.

thanks for your opinion, but i was merely asking about actual hardware/software problems, not personal opinions about the lack of included apps/features.
I think Google Voice is a million (yes literally a million) times better than the visual voicemail on the iPhone.
I did think of one issue I have had. Its minor, but was really frustrating. The stock android keyboard preinstalled seems to be off. The biggest time for me was that I would try for a c and get a space. I am not a fan of the Samsung keyboard, but Gingerbread Keyboard from the market seemed to fix it.

Hardware/Software problems - REDUX
1. When locked with Passcode or Pattern swipe and then hitting the power button to start the phone, 7 times out of 10 you get the pattern screen, the other 3 times the unit BYPASS the security all together and you can get right in
2. Voice recognition by Voice Action or VLingo, sometimes won't pick up your voice, intermittently strays off of Listen mode (Green) and sits there numbly until you exit restart the VOX
3. Slight BLUISH tint when viewing the SUPER AMOLED screen, when viewing directly on the screen this is a non issue.
4. GPS unit not quite as accurate as my old iphone. Driving around I find the ICON moving OFF road and plowing through houses/buildings on map... This is despite the GPS's S/N ratio is over 85db and locked onto multiple satelites...
IMHO - these issues are NON dealbreakers for me and the more glaring offenders are the missing FM radio and NFC but to each his own...
Good luck...!

Agreed that Google Voice is awesome and in many ways superior to Visual Voicemail, however, why couldn't Google Voice have been built in and tied directly to the phone? Why do CALLS have to be first forwarded behind the scenes to Google Voice in order to access Google Voice's Visual Voicemail...?
That's my only gripe with it, I'm using Google Voice on the phone, but I'm peeved that an extra step was needed... IMHO, but judging from some of the other threads I've been reading, I'm not exactly alone on this thought...

The issue here was with stock settings. If you set a pattern lock, then lock the phone. When you wake the phone, let the screen go back to black, then hit the power button. 100% of the time, if you do it that way (let the screen go off then press power again) you get the standard swipe to unlock and bypass the lock pattern.
There is an easy fix. In the lock screen settings set the timeout to immediate (default is 5 minutes) and it will 100% fix the issue.

[Q] AT&T SGNote-Screen Mode missing?

I finally checked out the SGNote today in an AT&T store for an hour (both it & a case fits in my pockets & feels fine in my hand/s but the huge screen is startling at first then I started getting used to it) but they did not yet make the S-Pen available to play with (fearing people would steal it I guess).
One thing I did not see was Settings->Display-Screen Mode->"Dynamic, Standard, Movie"?
A Google now turned up:
http://phandroid.com/2012/02/18/samsung-galaxy-note-review/
"One of things sadly missing from the Note (and is present in the Epic 4G Touch) was the Screen Mode option in the display settings. Not exactly sure why all Samsung SAMOLED devices don’t have this option but it was disappointing to see this left out of the Note. Being able to turn down/max out the amount of color saturation on your SAMOLED device is one of the best ideas since.. well, SAMOLED."
WTF? Why? -Thanx
AT&T...Need I say more? Why they can't just leave any phone alone is beyond me.
It's in the international one, but not the at&t version??
I just checked mine, it's there (international)

How easily? Please confirm -Thanx

Standby Translation / Cell Strength Notification

I don't have my device yet as I have Verizon, but for anyone who does have one on another carrier, I was wondering if you could answer two quick questions.
With the stock Rom, does the screen have a translation from on to off, or does it just go black? Specifically, in CM7 when the screen goes into standby and shuts off the display, you see the old tube television quickly fade to the line in the center of the screen animation.
Secondly is there a way on the stock Rom to change from "Bars" to "dBm" on the notification bar?
I think its too much to ask if it warns you of Dragons Ahead, so I won't even ask that one. : )
I know I can put CM9 on the GS3, and will probably eventually do so, but for the first few months I really want to keep it virgin. Root/Bloat Freeze for sure, but stock everything else on the phone. I would remove the apps instead of freezing them, but I have a feeling this phone will get updated soon and I don't want to deal with any nonsense due to missing default apps.
This will be my first Samsung phone, and just like I did with HTC Sense and MotoSlow, I want to give TouchWiz a test run and get familiar with their home interface. I am going to really miss dBm instead of those useless signal bars. I am pretty sure ANYONE who has EVER used a cellphone can tell you "Bars are Bull****". At least with dBm you get a slightly better idea of whats going on with your signal. The old time tube translation is something I grew up with seeing tube tv's, and loved on my cellphone in CM7. It would be creepy to see the screen just go black, that's not right. Dragons Ahead makes me smile every time and think of a time past where tv's shut off properly.
There was no screen off animation on my international version when I got it, and there was no way to get a DBM reading in the status bar, sorry

Thanks for the info. I guess it will be something I just deal with till I get to know TouchWiz. In a few months I will be using CM9 anyway.

Thank you! It just sucks what US carriers are doing to this device. Apparently now I am hearing they removed the FM radio from all US SG3's because it had a recording feature. Typical BS where Corporate America spends all its time on its knees blowing the RIAA/MPAA.
Not sure if they just removed the apk or the hardware too. Still waiting to here back from someone, but the FM radio is confirmed not to be on T-Mobile and Sprint. No word on AT&T or Verizon.
I own TuneIn Pro, and have only used the FM radio twice on my DX but it's a matter of principle. US versions of this phone have been completely dumb down and are being priced much higher than their European counterparts. I'm really getting sick of that ****. I can't wait to the ignorant people live in my country wake up and start realizing that capitalistic corporate America needs their ass handed to them for the way they have been acting over the past 10 years. It's always been bad and not exclusively here in the US, but over the past 10 years things have really gotten out of control.
Edit: Proof in point. I just read on the T-Mobile forums people were defending the company for not including it because they said it would've raised the cost of the device. Maybe those stupid ignorant T-Mobile users should realize that T-Mobile in UK is offering the phone for free, while T-Mobile in the United States has the highest prices of any carrier for this device. Pay more for less that's the American way .
