[Q] Update to recent OTA - HTC EVO 3D

Hi, everyone. I rooted my phone back in August and was able to update to Android 2.3.4. I find that HTC came out with another recent OTA that updates the radio, software and etc. Reading through one of the post, I found Freeza's all-in-one update zipfile (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=131). I found some of the answers to questions I was looking at but I just want to confirm. First, my current HBOOT is 1.4 and updating with Freeza's zip won't change my HBOOT version to 1.5. Second, all I need to do is copy pmg file to the root of my sd card and boot into the bootloader for it to automatically install. Finally my current software version is 2.08.651.2 and I am running the stock rom that my phone came with (in other words, no custom rom like Viper or Freeza). Do I need to update to 2.08.651.3 first or can I just skip directly to the recent update 2.17? Stock rom is okay with using Freeza's zip (his phone was running his own custom rom). After reading some of the posts about their phone being bricked after update (although it seems that only happens if you are updating individually instead of using Freeza's all in one), I am a little anxious and want to confirm everything. Any help/clarification in mighty appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I've flashed freezas aio and was fine. To answer your questions though. No the zip will not change your boot loader unless specified by freeza. Yes all you need to do is drop the zip on your sd and boot into your bootloader and it should recognize the zip, from there just follow the on screen instructions. Also no you don't need to update to the latest ota to use the aio zip. I have the same ver as you and I flashed it without any issues. Just make sure you dl the correct zip and read, read, read. Hope this helps.

Thanks! You helped alleviate my anxieties. You have no idea how nerve-wrecking it was to root my phone in the first place. I went through 3 youtube videos step by step before attempting to root my phone. Meanwhile my sister is in the background laughing as she did one simple step to root her Motorola Photon. Now it is just updating my software without bricking my phone or unrooting it.

To add some technical details to the question, the bootloader can only be updated by one file, hboot*.img.
As long as you check every .zip file before flashing and there is no hboot*.img file present, the bootloader should not be touched. None of the other img files which are loaded such as, recovery.img, boot.img, system.img, etc will touch the bootloader.
Hope that helps give you something specific to check and look for in the future!

to add to all of this...
i assume, you being on a 1.4 hboot, you used revolutionary to obtain root? which means you are s-off. even if you updated your hboot you would still be s-off because your NAND is unlocked already.
and you should be perfectly fine flashing that update.
EDIT*** and joey, i decided to give your root quiz a shot... felt like being a hero and did the harder version... got my ass handed to me. LOL.
it was a lot more difficult than i anticipated. you pretty much have to know systems inside and out - i only got 3 correct. haha

You should laugh right back at her and tell her not to expect an OFFICIAL update to ICS until at least Q3 of this year...

Hi, everyone. I just used Freeza's aio update zip. The updates automatically installed and then it ask for me to reboot. When I rebooted and then check my software version info, the software # remains 2.08.651.2. Wasn't it suppose to be updated to 2.17? This is my complete info after updating:
Kernel: 2.6.35.13-g84f8edd
Baseband version: 1.06.00.1216
Build #: 2.08.651.2 CL130920 release-keys
Browser version: WebKit/533.1
PRI Version: 1.42_003
PRL Version: 21083
I originally wrote down the info before updating and now I can't find that piece of paper so I am uncertain whether anything updated?
Here is what I did:
1) My phone was in airplane mode when I powered off
2) Went to bootloader and it automatically found the zip file and updated. Powered on.
3) No change in software version. Turn off airplane mode. Powered off then powered on. No change.
Did I do something wrong? Freeza's aio contained: radio, rcdata, rpm, sbl 1 2 3 and t2. Did it update the radio but not the software version? What is my next step? Any pointers to a link containing the software update zip would be greatly appreciated. I saw the post on "[ROM]Stock 2.17.651.5 update zip" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443592). Should I just use the zip file in the below link or do I take certain files out and create a zip file called "pg86img.zip" and install again?
Full RUU
Xhausx full pg86img RUU images - http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=564
Thanks in advance for the help.

In the same thread that you found freezas aio there's also his complete aio as well I think. Its either his or xhaus's well either way your good. You have to read the thread a little more or just go back a few pages and find the full update zip that they posted on the thread and flash one of them. Just make sure you read what the full update.zip contains. As in did your radio change, well if you flashed the-.zip correctly then whatever the -.zip contained was updated..

Rooting after 2.11.605.9 solution

For those of you that have endured the frustration of updating to the latest software version (2.11.605.9) There is hope! Apparently with this software version, the bootloader is locked. And for some reason this version would not allow the "Revolutionary" rooting method to work. (I would imagine everyone with this problem had issues with not being able to get past Zerg Root. At least that was the problem I had)
Anyways, I got my phone rooted....heres how.
Per the instructions for using Revolutionary, install the driver as stated on their website. (Make sure HTC Sync is not installed on your computer)
Download Mecha_2.11.605.3.zip (I'm a newbie here so I cant post links, but I found it through Android Police but if u google it its easy to find, its hosted on multi upload) rename the zip file as PG05IMG and put on the root of your SD card (as you would in other rooting methods) and run the bootloader.
Once its booted and all that fun waiting is over and your TB powers back up, make sure to turn off all wireless connections to make sure OTA doesnt try to upgrade you. (I turned on airplane mode as soon as I could)
From there run Revolutionary as instructed from their website. Worked like a charm for me, and hope it does for all of you with this same problem.
I TAKE ABSOLUTELY NO CREDIT FOR THIS SOLUTION. Thank you for all you developers out there that make our phones able to be so much cooler and more enjoyable. I'm just glad I could help in this marginal way, and hope that someone will find it usefull. SPREAD THE WORD IF YOU KNOW OF ANYONE HAVING
So are you back at 2.11.05.9 & rooted after this? or are you stick at 2.11.605.3 (since that is the RUU zip you installed)?
Just run a custom ROM and you do not have to worry about QTA uodates. They are mainly to take the root away anyways.
I'm at .3 still. Older root is better than no root, so I'm not complaining. I'm sure someone will be able to unlock 2.11.605.9 for use with Revolutionary. These devs out there are crazy smart.
I tried this steps i got s-off but when I boot my phone is see that superuser app is not here and cannot install recovery any ideas
same problem
the night after my phone updated to 2.11.605.9 I decided to root. Tried revolution, but had the same problem op described. Attempting the same solution, but using Mecha_2.11.605.5.
Hope it works.
worked!
Finally got it to work!
Downgraded to Mecha_2.11.605.5.
Used revolution to get s-off and apply cwm
Used file on revolution manual to get root..
now to select an appropriate rom...
Does this method, downgrading using the zip file you mentioned, still proceed to root WITHOUT wiping the phone apps, settings, data, etc?
I really want to root without getting rid of all that... for now... so that I can then use Titanium Backup or similar app to do an image of my pre-custom ROM phone in case I want to revert back later.
will lose data

hey helikyler, downgrading will cause you to lose your settings and apps and what not. that is the drawback of this method. unfortunately you need root to be able to get a backup but you need to downgrade to be able to get root :-/
if its really that important to you to keep the data you may want to wait until revolutionary or another tool can obtain root on this release....
file found, thanks all
multiupload is down. you can find ruu files at bliynd [dot] com/ thunderbolt/ ruu/
There is Mecha_2.11.605.3.zip and Mecha_2.11.605.5.zip.
Thanks for all the help.
***LOCKED*** On Bootloader
Hello All,
First of all thanks for the awesome easy guide !!
This is the first time I am rooting my HTC Tbolt and have had an issue to start with.
Used the instructions in the link below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1401959
After I download the 2.11.605.5 downgrade zip, I rename it, put in on the SD Card and go to HBOOT and it installs the downgrade just fine.
But at the end of this process, when I try to get the MR4 Radio onto the SD Card and install it, it simply does not happen. HBoot checks for the file, finds it, but nothing happens. I have renamed in properly and followed instructions to the dot.
I also noticed a ***LOCKED*** right on top of the screen and I think this could be an issue.
Can I go ahead and proceed with the Revolutionary Root Technique ? Would this be possible at this point ?
Is there anyway I can get Flash the MR4 Radio before I actually root ?
Also, would I be able to flash the MR4 Radio onto my device after Rooting ?
Any help is much appreciated !
Thanks in advance !
Cheers !

[Q] If currently on 2.11.605.5 can you root without worrying about OTA updates?

I have a Thunderbolt that I keep downgrading so I can root it but those dam automatic updates are unstoppable and I want to know if I root it while on .5 will they keep updating or will the new root/rom stop it once and for all. Cause i heard if it updates while rooted phone gets messed up. If your rooted you would know thanks for reading!
you can root the .5 then flash the new .9 rooted rom and it will stop the update notices plus most roms block the update from happening anyway

Would greatly appreciate if you or some else could post simple directions so I don't mess it up. I already no how to downgrade to .5 and I'm getting the idea that your saying use revolutionary to root then flash a rom. If that's the case then let me know and recommend a rom that everything functions normally on and I will be one happy android
1. Downgrade to .5
2. Run revolutionary to gain s-off
3. Boot into recovery and flash superuser.zip from revolutionary website to gain root.
4. Flash a custom Rom or stock rooted .9
And always check the md5 checksum of the files you download before flashing to verify the integrity of the file.

Go ahead and finish the root/recovery/superuser process. Take the .5 and radio images off your SD card for the time being.
You don't have to flash the radios yet, if at all, honestly - depends on what ROMs you wish to run - if they require radio(s) different than what you have, flash them then.
Obtain root and back it all up first, then next steps.

But i do not have the stock recovery and unsure how to get it.
I tried skipping the step and just going from re-locking phone to updating from bootloader but I get a CID incorrect error.
Any help is appreciated, I have never had so much trouble updating a ROM
PS.
I wasn't aware so much was needed to upgrade from my BulletProof ROM to this ROM, I just flashed like I would have before and now I am in an HTC Boot loop

I went through that, but the RUU is an exe, or do I rename the OTA zip file to PH85IMG.
When I went through this process it loaded PH85IMG, did the check and then nothing. Never asked me to update or anything. I wouldn't have posted to ask for help if I didn't need it.

No. Connect your phone and flash the EXE. PH85IMG is ONLY for T-Mobile Users. Everyone else uses an EXE.
LMAO some things never change
Good luck with ICS

Thanks for your help! I have never felt like such a noob....I swear I am actually good with tech lol
So I managed to get my phone flashed, thanks for all of your help, but I thought the flash was suppose to upgrade me to ICS, but it installed a stock 2.3.4 I am so confused. After flashing the EXE am I suppose to use the OTA.zip? If so, from what I am reading I need to S-OFF.
I tried installing CM9 after the flash and I am able to boot, but once its loads and begins the initial setup it freezes on the Select Language screen and reboots. I have searched the forum and no luck.

[Q] NOOB Back to Basics Reset of Global Update

Okay, guys, I apologize for what I'm about to ask, but I am now completely lost in the Global Update thread, so I needed to start fresh.
I was rooted and on stock 3.14.605.13. I kept getting annoying update messages from Verizon and tried several forum suggestions to turn them off. Finally I just decided to try to get the update. I was able to unroot and install an RUU back to 3.14.605.12, but now I'm completely stuck. :crying: I'm getting the same Service Unavailable message as others who try to get the small .13 update.
I have downloaded the 3.14.605.13 update zip but can't decipher how to get it installed since the Global Update Thread is now so jumbled.
If anyone has the time to helps us NOOBS (I think I saw several others in my situation), could you please give a step by step rundown of what we need to do? Please start from step 1. For example, do I need to root again now before I can get up to .13?
Finally, if I do get to .13, can I just unroot and get the new global update via Verizon?

you should be good to do the update.
ruu using this zip http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...ull-ruu-build-4-03-605-2-for-the-htc-rezound/
(place on root of sd card, rename PH98IMG.zip)
it will run 2 times. once with be bootloader and recovery, second time will be the full rom.
this will get you to stock OTA should show up a little while after its all installed and connected to the network.
EDIT:
If updated doesnt show up in a day you should be able to update with this zip: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=40768590&postcount=35
Okay, I think you're going to be able to get me there ... but ...
I downloaded the zip file and renamed it to PH98IMG.zip. I copied it to the root of both the internal and external cards since I wasn't sure which it needed to be on.
Now how do I execute the RUUx2s? The last one I did to get back to .12 was an .exe file, so that was easy.
I do have SKD and can open a command prompt, so you don't have to go that far back in instructions.

once on root of external sd card. reboot the phone into bootloader
power off device hold vol - and power till you see hboot
hboot will detect it and run for you.
make sure you have 70+ battery before trying this. and do not pull the battery or loose power or it will birck.
Worked like a charm. A million thanks to you.

Thanks again for being so patient!

Okay, hopefully last question.
I downloaded the OTA zip just in case.
If I need to end up doing that manually, do I rename it (and if so to what?) copy it to root and then run hboot?

[Q] HELP! Returning user

Hello all,
I'm a returning XDA-er from about a year ago (yikes!) Things got pretty crazy with school so I haven't had time to mess with my phone as much as I liked. But this being fall break, I'm BACK! And overwhelmed with all the advancements that have been come up with our phone.
Here's where I'm at, I S-off'ed with LazyPanda (Yeah, that long ago) and I'm running stock 4.0.3 on the 1.13.651 software version with HBOOT 1.12.2222 and radio 1.02.12.0427. From what I've tried to gather going through the forums again, there's been numerous OTA updates since then and radio updates. Somewhere along the line there was a touchpanel update as well? So much has happened since I was last browsing around that I'm lost. I still have TWRP recovery, but last time I was in it, it wiped my internal sdcard, so I don't know the version of it because I haven't gone near it since.
So, I'd like to get going again with ROMs and flashing, maybe a new stock ROM or try out some AOSP, but I just don't know where to start back up again. I feel like I'd need to update the radio and firmware, because my data has been wonky, but I don't want that to entail unrooting and going to S-on. So any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks so much!
If I were you I would run the Android 4.3 RUU. The link can be found in my Hboot thread (top link in my sig). There are also installation instructions in that same post. This RUU will wipe your internal storage so if you have anything you don't want to lose you'll need to back it up to your computer first. You will need to unlock your bootloader again once you've run the RUU, and then reinstall TWRP. This will update your phone to the latest software and firmware version, change the partition layout of the internal storage and update your Hboot. You will remain S-off.
