Mozillas 'Boot 2 Gecko' Web Mobile OS - Heres the GIT - Anyone wanna try? - HTC EVO 3D

So at MWC Mozilla is going to be announcing the Boot 2 Gecko OS they are building. Its bare bones, and will probably never amass to Android or anything but looks fun to mess around with. Everything is built using html and css, so anyone with basic knowledge will be able to build, customize and create stuff for this OS.
It looks like this is built off of a WVGA Galaxy S2 in the GIT so should be easy to get a proof of concept going for EVO3D.
There is more information on Engadget today about it. http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/16/mozilla-offers-gaia-ui-first-look-will-reveal-boot-to-gecko-par/
And more info at Cnet. http://news.cnet.com/8301-30685_3-5...-allies-for-its-challenge-to-android-and-ios/
Here is the GIT - https://github.com/andreasgal/B2G
"But B2G has a couple things going for it. First, it's a browser-based operating system, meaning that Web apps become its native apps. With legions of Web programmers already at work and increasingly attuned to mobile browsing, B2G isn't starting from scratch.
The current implementation of the Gaia environment is still simplistic and incomplete, but it offers a compelling demonstration of how conventional Web content can be used to create a smartphone user experience. It's possible to do anything in the B2G user interface that can be done with HTML and CSS, so the possibilities for styling and theming are prodigiously extensive. Such intrinsic flexibility could help make B2G appealing to hardware vendors because it would make it easier for them to create custom user interfaces that differentiate their products.
Mozilla hasn't created an HTML-based widget toolkit for application development. The applications currently included in Gaia are just straight markup with CSS for design. It's theoretically possible to use existing HTML widget toolkits in B2G, however, such as jQuery Mobile and Sencha Touch. "
Here are some screen shots. And I guess you can probably assume the MAC OS Firefox framework at the top is just in the pictures as an emulator, so try to imagine that is not there.

If if your just asking why? Just because we (you) can! This could be a fun hobbyist OS, or could even see widespread use on low cost or dumbphones or a replacement for BREW
And here is the source code GIT again - https://github.com/andreasgal/B2G

Maybe this should be moved to Development?

I was wondering if this would work with the "official" device tree from cyanogenmod,
ill trie it and if i run into errors, ill post them here.
but first i have to download the full source and the device specific files.
ill hit this post when it's done!

I'm working on that, just have to set up my ubuntu environment one way or another, its acting funny and crashed my PC last week -___-

Nice...Good stuff! Will wait for the beta or final version!
looks really nice and fingerfriendly. hope there will be a new keyboard too. the keyboard used in ubuntu isn´t really usable, good onscreen keyboard would be great.
This is very nice!
How can I be chosen to beta test? Would love to help out and have a lot of experience. Thank you.

ubuntu comes standard with gnome 2, like dcordes released it.
this is the new gnome 3.
new looks and features with another launcher.
here you can see a visual tour of it.
still very nice tho.

now why would you wanna do that?
the only reason i can think of is that you failed to look up the many (free) alternatives to the programs you use on windows.
running things like wine opens up your computer to the many thousands of virusses and other bad things, which you didn't have to worry about if you wouldn't have installed it.
and no i'm not saying that there are no virusses for linux, because there are, not many tho.
when it comes to games, the good software houses have the linux executables on there site.
you simply get the windows version from the shop you like and use the linux binarie to install it.

Looking good
This is really awesome. Great UI like said it seems very fingerfriendly. Can´t wait to give it a go.

No you can't on ARM.
From Wine's website:
"You cannot run "normal" Windows Apps on ARM yet."
Eg. you cannot run x86 Windows apps on Wine on ARM. I think they're preparing for the future as Microsoft just announced that Windows is being ported to ARM, thus some Windows apps will be compiled for Windows/ARM. Wine uses native x86 calls, that's not going to change. It's not really an emulator per se, just a compatibility layer so to speak.
very nice
if hd2 can run windows 7 will be perfect

sorry to if my response was to harsh, i can get carried away being a linux fan/user.
i tryed running gnome3 in a virtual machine but thats not useable on my setup.
so the next is sort of guess work.
gnome/kde/xfce are window managers, just like microsoft window has on top of there dos/shell (disc operating system).
(if this causes someone to start flaming, lookup blackbox for windows before you do so, thats a replacement for the standard (explorer) window manager on windows)
so the windows link you see would suggest to me the open windows on the host, nothing more.

I'm sure there's an app for that. If there isn't, there's probably a theme to dress it up to look like Win7 fully with BSoD and all.

Yo Dawg, I heard you like apps so I got you an app to compile apps.

So you can make apps on your app while you run other apps.

Anyway.
AIDE is an integrated development environment (IDE) for developing real Android Apps directly on Android devices. AIDE supports the full edit-compile-run cycle: write code with the feature rich editor offering advanced features like code completion, real-time error checking, refactoring and smart code navigation, and run your App with a single click.
AIDE will turn your Android tablet with keyboard into a real development box. We use the Transformer Prime running Ice Cream Sandwich to code with AIDE. AIDE will turn your Android Phone into a small development computer to browse and touch your code on the go.
AIDE is fully compatible with Eclipse projects. Just copy the sourcecode to your device, open any source file in AIDE to load the project and start coding.

learning java myself! I've been using the cbt nuggets video series, I watch a 30 minute nugget here and there on my prime. Had to convert them to mp4 though because they were in wmv when I downloaded them.
I hope to port a few linux apps to android soon. I've got graphic design experience too so it should help with gui's and object oriented programming.
Pitty that debugging tools aren't available. Besides that, it allows for code refactoring, auto-complete, syntax highlighting and a few neat stuff. Tried importing a few of my projects and even those with dozens of files it managed to work well. Definitively useful when away from pc. Add support for SVN/CVS/GIT and it would be (even more) awesome!
YES!!!
This is awesome!
With a debugger and a version control system integration it will be a full fledged development app.
I think that this is going to be very useful for testing and tweaking apps on the hardware. Do most of the hard coding and debugging on your desktop, transfer the project over to the device and tweak as you test, brilliant!
You can always multi task to a terminal app and run version control through a chroot.
AIDE and the ability to use a real keyboard IMHO, makes Android about as self hosting as we're likely to get for a few more years, short of being able to compile and bake in your ROM from your ROM.
The Android SDK works mostly fine on Android in a chroot with Java, even if you don't do the Xvnc thing...but it relies on an x86 program called aapt -- that AIDE has built for ARM .

Thanks OP. This is great news. Might start messing around with it myself.
I got this the day it came out and it is SO amazing!!! I've never done any coding of anything on android or any thing for that matter, but using this I'm already making an app. It might just be that I thought this was so cool that I actually tried to make one or that it makes it so easy, but either way this app is awesome!!!! Also the developer is using an asus prime and updates frequently(both pluses, especially for us prime owners)

Some of you may have heard of tablet mode and if you have tried it you know well that it smashes your phone. Apps are small, their layout is screwed, things overlap, crash or stop working, Google Play forbids you to download, if you tried AOKP you cant even use launcher and phone. In short, it is a mess.
PARANOIDANDROID changed that. It does not "heal" tablet mode, it obliterates the boundaries. You define how big or small apps are, you define in which UI they display, no matter if your phone runs in tablet or phone mode, which also you can define. Customize every single entity on your phone, lockscreen, navigationbar, system-components, widgets, apps. If you prefer stay with your three bearpaw buttons + drop-down curtain or switch to a combined navigationbar + drop-up notificationcenter, enjoy Youtube in 3D, Gmail and settings in 2-columns, Chrome in its better mobile UI, etc. Nothing overlaps, nothing crashes, everything works as you'd expect. This is completely new ground and has never been realized before, it is lightyears from tablet mode.
We created it to establish the idea that tablet/hybrid mode can indeed work and that is was an error on Googles side to use the same layout for high resolution devices that is used on tiny little things like htc wildfire. We saw how badly build.prop tablet-mode was milked so we decided to remain closedsource until the codebase is mature enough to publish. Our first repos went public last week and the rest will follow soon, i will personally commit the hybrid sourcetree into CM9. Until then, do not ask us for sources, we have good reason to do it like this and when it's out people will know why, they will see something that works, not features for show. We are still fully open to ports. As long as they stay true to our vision and base on CM9.
As the sheer amount of porting requests needed to be addressed somehow we open this topic so maintainers can help each other and it'll be easy for us to take a look once in awhile as our pm-boxes are exploding. We understand that setting up PA can be quite confusing since it introduces must-have configurations that are unique.

Eh, I've spoken with the developer about this in length in the past. I don't see him going back to support 2.3 and below honestly. He has his work cut out for him with network support as it is and he's really not a fan of older versions of Android from what I can tell.
He did release source code for the app when it supported 2.3 and below and there was a compiled version/ongoing project but it may be discontinued. Here is the website (roughly translates to error establishing connection?) and here is an apk link. It pales in comparison to mizuu but it provides similar functionality.
With all that said, good luck in your venture.
Yes but if a bunch of people support the suggestion then he might consider it. It is why the suggestions section is there open to everyone, we'll see how it goes but we need to keep pushing .

Cannot access that option any longer
I just went to that site and they have 'greyed out' the option of CM7 support.....
I was able to vote it up earlier but it seems he has disabled it unfortunately, with this comment
Hey!
Sorry, but that’s not going to happen. For a number of reasons, I’m not planning on supporting anything other than Android 3.0+. The low RAM issue is the most prominent one, and that’s also what’s making ICS and Jelly Bean run slower on your device. Devices with Android 2.x or older generally have limited RAM memory, and that’s just not suited for Mizuu.

Sorry Veronica
There is another app, MovieBrowser that has similar functionality and I know the developer of Mizuu talks to its developer from time to time (I think MovieBrowser has network support actually). Its not exactly the same as Mizuu (and I prefer Mizuu honestly) but it is also 3.0+ only. Perhaps you can nudge that developer?

Multiple users on Jelly Bean

Hi,
I'm not sure if this is the best place to put this but since I'm kind of new I don't have much of a choice anyway...
My father is getting a Nexus 7 in the next few days and since I'll be using it a bit I've decided to put a custom ROM on it. I'm going with Paranoid Android because of the whole tablet UI thing, but I was wondering if it has a multiple user system, since I didn't see it listed in the features. I noticed an option for it on my Xylon ROM on my Galaxy Nexus and I'm not really sure how it works... Does it just change which Google account the device is linked to? Ideally it would be cool if I could set up a different launcher for each account. Anyone got some input?
Are you using 4.2 version of the Android. Nexus 7 came out with 4.1 and it should have probably updated now. But pls check if you are running 4.2, only then you can setup multi user. yeah and the different launcher thing . it is possible.

Yep, it's 4.2. I actually noticed it's a feature of Android in general and not a ROM addition.
So how does one switch users? Is there something similar to the Windows login screen?
Multiple users is actually available in all versions of Jelly Bean.
The user files are located in /data/system/users/
And user data is stored in /data/user/
The default user, primary account, is user 0.
You can download an app called User Management that will allow you to create new user accounts.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appaholics.um
There is also another app called SwitchMe Multiple Accounts that does this with a GUI for switching users like you would on your computer.
