Meticulus's Foreigner: Editing build.prop problem - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

Device: 5.0 US
Kernel: Entropy's
This did not happen until R5. I have tried changing the build.prop as stated in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21189521&postcount=1
That is the mod to soving all incompatibilities on the device.
Anyway anytime I try to chane anything in the build.prop and reset the phone the phone just stays in a bootloop and have to reflash firmware to get it to work again. I think it may have to do with the deviceid hack.
This really sucks I really need this to unlock the devices capabilities! I have already done a complete restore wiped all data and cache even formatted sd card and device storage then reflashed firmware only to have the build.prop problem still.
Is anyone else having this problem or is it just me?

possible...
hi
if you did it whit the app listened in thread it could be possible damage your file...
at apk page there is a legend at bottom
Version 0.3 is still considered Alpha quality AND IS EVEN MORE DANGEROUS due to direct editing on /system.

Hi Guys,
I am using MIUI 2.11.26 in my Samsung SG 2 AT&T version i have a problem with the video recording out door no problem especially indoor that too under lights the video is recording like this please see the video in Youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKjVRisoxkk
Could you people let me know how to set it right. Thanks in advance
Sometimes it happened when you did something wrong during flashing. It happened to me too before when i was on cm7 rom. But its not bother me much cause theres another alternative solution.
If other features work properly and you just encountered with only camera problem, you can download 3rd party camera app from market, so far lgcamera is the best. Better than stock camera. This is the easiest way for you to try, if you change rom version,.maybe the camera problem will solved but you may face another bug. Btw heres the solution,
1- try 3rd party camera from market
2- flash another kernel, siyah or fluxi or excel69. Siyah 2.1.1 is the best to.give a try.
3- reflash rom by full wipe

I installed it but it says cannot record video and also cannot take photo with Lgcamera. I even installed the syiah kernel the also the video recording is same any other ways to get around i even tried wipe and install then also there is no changes in the video recording except this others are fine. Any solutions you let me know. and also let me know how you overcome this error as you faced it. Thanks in advance
If u did all those method and it still doesnt help, then u need to refer to the rom's forum. Check forum if other user faced the same problem or not, if yes, i think u will get the answer there.
If only u who face the problem, and u still wanna give a go for this rom, try this method, flash previous version, (when on previous version, take time to check the camera, snapping images and video recording ).. then do not full wipe, just clear cache and dalvik. The flash new version, and remember if u got boot loop or feezing after flashing, simply flash siyah kernel via odin or cwm..then your phone will boot up.
Then check your camera again. This time u just flashed the rom without full wipe. Maybe your camera would work.
I faced this problem too before, and i just reflash the rom, but i use different method, i reinstall back the stock rom, root it then flash the related rom..and it work.

Update - yesterday i tried to roll back to custom rom my phone came with 2.3.4 i used odin to update the unofficial stock version of 2.3.5 when last backed up i only backed up the 2.3.5 which is unofficial any way i rolled back to this 2.3.5 with cwm and checked the video recording the same problem i had in that too. so i rolled back to MIUI ICS 2.11.26. Still the problem is there.
Seems like the problem exist on any rom? Seems like the problem not because of the rom, but your phone's hardware might have a problem.
Use jig to reset binary counter. (google for jig binary reset) Flash stock rom as it original, reset binary counter then bring it to your phone dealer. If the problem cause by hardware, dont play fool, your phone might end up like a crap. Claim the warranty is the best solution, but you need to reset everything, if u dont reset binary counter, phone dealer will know that your phone has been rooted and ur out of warranty.
But before that, take 2 day to figure out the solution. Try cyanogenmod rom, or any other rom. Ill try to figure out to help u too. Ill info u later.

Thank you so much. The problem here is i am in hongkong using unlocked version of At&T so i cannot go to phone dealer. So i think binary counter is not necessary any way it will not help. Now my only question is how to get back to version 2.3.4 as it comes with it without restoring the 2.3.5 (backedup) one.
Well, restoring backup is not really recommended, i use this method before but always endup with bugg.
To get back to stock firmware, u need to download original firmware file to flash with Odin from your pc. Thats all

Read here and here and then choose which is best for you.
This is an old issue with Passion and had been discussed in that thread many months ago. I am sure if you searched the thread, the answer would have *eventually* pooped up but with that many posts, it would take all day to do so.
That being said, Passion is extremely outdated (still 4.0.3) and I suggest upgrading to a different ROM (4.0.4 variant). There was vast improvements from Google with the newer version, plus Passion isn't really supported anymore.

Thank you. Just a side question, if I were to move from Passion to a 4.0.4 ROM such as ICZen, would all my info get deleted? Or does that only happen if I was to upgrade specific Passion updates if I have that ROM already?
EDIT: I just realized you linked me to the I9000 section. I have the Vibrant.

Yes and no. You can preserve you app data, browser links, SMS/MMS, Launcher Setting,...through Titanium Backup and then restore the DATA part later. I capped that so as to warn you not to restore the /system/apk (only restore the data on the Green highlighted /system/apps in TBPro).
Yes I did link you to the I9000 section bc those are what you want. All it is is a script that converts your /data/data to /datadata. AKAIK, all the newr ICS ROMs already do this, hence why I suggested you get out of the outdated ROM. ICZen does this on install already btw>
Thanks.
And to confirm, I would only have to install the ICZen ROM right? It states that the subzero kernel is included. ( I saw your name on there, so I thought I'd ask)
Yes it is included. Install instructions are similar to most every other ICS ROM out there except for the additional WIPE.
Steps
-Download ICZen and place it on your internal sd
-Reboot to Clockwork Recovery
-Perform a wipedata/factory reset
-Go to mounts and storage and format the system partition
-Flash your downloaded ICZ rom file
-From the main menu of recovery, perform a wipedata/factory reset again <--THIS IS THE SECOND WIPE I AM TALKING ABOUT
-Reboot
-On bootup, give it a few minutes to settle in, reboot and use as normal.
-Enjoy your ICZen!

Chainfire 3d will not work on jellybean. because all of the jellybean ROMS available are either leaked version of unofficial versions which are UNSTABLE versions. you will have to wait for the stable release of jellybean.
Those are NOT leaked versions.. google released JB sources for public .
Good thread. Was curious but thought it might of been the whole unstable thing.

Chainfire 3D will not work on JB as long as Chainfire will adjust the program, which, as I read in another threat will not happen soon as it is a lot of work (please correct me if I am wrong).
If you try to use Chainfire 3D on JB you will end up stuck on Samsung start screen.
Hence only way to use Chainfire 3D for now is use ICS.
Ics is only option as of now. What i m doing is dual booting ICS and JB. For games i boot into ics and play 9MM n nfshp n for rest things jb all the way

While you're here.....
You're completely off topic; and your question have been asked 4456789 times on xda. Just do it.

A question that I believe many want an answer to.

I personally think that a bunch of people who come across custom roms for their 4.0 galaxy players ask themselves this question, "why aren't there very many roms for my device that are simply flashed through clockwork recovery?" Is it because this device is not very popular? Is it because not very many people know how to put a custom rom in a cwm package? In no way do I want to sound rude, but when I have to flash multiple things onto my device from my computer in order for the tomorto work right as well as not brick my device, it just ruins it for me. There is nothing wrong with roms that require a computer to install, but I personally think that with all those instructions that might not be too clear on what you are support to do, something is bound to go wrong.

This is not that it can't be done, but it the case of ics for the 4.0, it's a bug in the kernel that force us to flash a kernel from heimdall. If this bug was not here, the rom would be simply flashed with cwm. So the answer is it's not because dev don't want to do it like this, it's because they can't.
Couldn't they fix it?

They don't fix it because they don't know what is broken, this is not a choice. This is not that easy to find what is causing a bug and to repair it. You should be a little more thankful of what you already have because without them there would be no custom rom and no recovery. If you really want it so bad just go ahead and fix it then share it with the dev and they will include it.

The problem is that the param.lfs isn't getting updated, probably because their kernel isn't compatible with Samsung's proprietary param.ko (so the bootloader still thinks you're in recovery). If it's not, there's nothing that can be done about it. If it is, they should include that module in the ramdisk. and insmod it with init.rc, and the recovery bootloop will be gone.

Well, that's part of it too. I think on the 4.0, the problem may be more complicated than that, due to it's storage layout, (I have the 5.0) but rest assured the devs are working on it.

There's this but mostly because we change the partition (we completely ditch the j4fs support). Also the bootloaders expect to run BML/STL partitions so the bootmode isn't cleared. The thing that teamhackung made is that they created a partition named reservoir that would handle all the bad blocks. This partition is used to flash the boot partition which is the kernel one. This is still an undergoing experimentation for me but I'll try to compile a CM9 with this new type of flashing. An example of the partition layout is here:
https://github.com/CyanogenMod/andr...ung-3.0-ics/drivers/mtd/onenand/samsung_gsm.h
I may miss some things too but this is the things simplified.
Also NATO I do know how you feel about it and I'm trying to do my best (with han and oisis gone) to solve everything as soon as I can. (Don't forget that I have school too )

[Q] Why so problematic?

I've been searching the forum but I cannot figure this out.
My International Galaxy Player 5:
Model: YP-G70
ROM: Stock XXKPL
Kernel: Rumirand's R14
Firmware: 2.3.6 Gingerbread
Launcher: Xperia S
Rooted: Yes
Inevitably, after the device being on for an hour or so, the camera starts malfunctioning. By that I mean it either doesn't load up completely (only black screen + status bar, in landscape mode on top of that) or I take one pic and then the touch screen doesn't respond, requiring a hard boot.
Also, after being powered on for an hour or longer (seems to be a trend here), the device won't wake up or respond, forcing me to hard boot it.
The SD Card reader also randomly convinces itself that by some odd chance that the SD card has been unexpectedly removed, forcing me to hard boot it.
I should also note that I've noticed when the camera is having it's fit, misbehaving, so too does PowerAmp; it won't launch either.
Most of these issues are more frequent, if not caused by, with the Xperia S launcher.
Now my question to you is...why? Why all of these problems?
That's weird. Are those problems of yours disappear afterwards? I sometimes have problems with the camera, but after awhile it disappears, or appears after several weeks or so.

These problems are very consistent, averaging 1.5 times a day actually. It's quite a hindrance to constantly have to reboot.
Oh! I forgot one other problem: sometimes, recently, when connecting my aux cable, PowerAmp won't auto-play like it usually does. No big deal but I'm just saying. All of these little problems really add up to an unhappy time!
Did this problems appear before or after you rooted and flashed custom kernel? You can try reinstalling stock fw, kernel and root, and see if that will help...

Well, I have the stock fw/ROM/Build of GINGERBREAD.XXKPL but I need to know what the stock kernel is. Also, are you advising to unroot the device as well? I can't tell.
Update: Okay so apparently the device is acting up quite a lot today! While listening to music with PowerAmp through Aux the device wouldn't respond to waking the screen at all. Yet, it was playing music just fine. This tells me that it wasn't accepting any input but could output just fine. I wonder what causes this..Right now in the past 1 hour it has needed me to hard boot it 3 times!
What could be the problem?
Im suggesting you to reinstall stock fw, then install rj14, and root.. but before that, have you tried going back to factory settings?

If by factory settings you mean "Factory Data Reset" in CWRecovery menu then yes. All the time with each new flash.
I was fairly certain I've been reinstalling the stock ROM but not sure about the kernel! I really would like to take this back to stock settings. I've tried by myself but maybe I'm locating the wrong ROM and stuff.
Would someone be so kind as to link me to the stock ROM and Kernel please? Thanks!

Thanks!

You can check which kernel by going to settings, about phone, kernel version...

Thanks but that link is broken, it isn't pointing to any specific thread. Also, I know how to check my current kernel but I wasn't asking for that. Unless I'm misunderstanding of course. I'm actually looking for the stock kernel so I can download it.

Thanks. I'll just keep my eyes peeled and work on this sometime possibly tonight. For now I'll backup apps.
By the way, has anyone ever heard of Xperia S Launcher causing any of my problems? Wondering if it's related or causing my grief.
if you flash the stock firmware through odin, you will have stock rom and kernel

Personally, I think you have bad hardware - consistent, unique problems even on stock. If you aren't overclocking, then the only thing that would force you to reboot that often is malfunctioning hardware.

Okay so KPL is YP-G70's Stock and not KPF? Thanks, I'm going to flash this with Odin and hope for the best!
Update: Flashed this ROM:
Firmware: 2.3.6
Kernel: 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #2
Build: GINGERBREAD.XXKPL
So am I back on stock everything now?

I seriously believe it's a hardware issue as well. My samsung warrantee is still in effect and I might just use it. I will decide after even more stock rom and kernel testing. I assume I need to put the device back to stock settings to send to samsung lol.
Any update on issues?

I have been having the exact same problems you listed ever since I bought my device, (especially where the SD card randomly unmounts, which drives me absolutely CRAZY.) I was wondering if you ever found a solution to your problems?
Sidenote: I only experienced these problems when using the stock ROM. I started using CM9, and all the issues except for the unmounted SD card stopped occurring, (SD card unmount issue was way less frequent.) My device went haywire one day, so I had to flash a Stock kernel back onto the device, and all of the problems reappeared. Have you experienced the same frequency of issues using any other ROMs?

These problems never went away and I've set the device aside for now. I reinstalled stock ROM and kernel (I think), and am waiting for the problems to reoccur before shipping it off to samsung.
Honestly the best ROM for the device might have been Chip's. But its such a ugly ROM so I went to stock and wanted to monitor the device a bit further.
