Best Buy prices it at $749 but I'm reading everyone getting unsubsidized at $649 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Just wondering why Best Buy is charging more. I will ultimately pay everything subsidized price, but am taxed on the $749 price.

Do you have a link?

That's why I decided to go with AT&T, since it was $100 cheaper than what Best Buy offers for full price.

Because that's the price we got them at. it sucks because if we got them at 650 my employee price would be around 500 if you're buying outright though we will gladly price match atts 650

Subsidized: BB making money on your monthly bills. It adds up nicely for 2 years.
Unsubsidized: BB making money on phone sale only.
Most 3rd party retailers ask more than AT&T's list price for unsubsided price.

This is not a surprise. Bestbuy's unsubsidized prices are always way over everyone else's. The same can be said for pretty much any product they carry.

True. It's better to buy the phone outright from AT&T itself. Although BB has one of the best prices when it comes to upgrades, after awhile when it goes down, of course. I've never used Wal-Mart to upgrade, even though I heard they have the lowest price when it comes to upgrades.

I have always been successful in getting Best Buy to match the ATT store price on no commitment prices. Best Buy has no restock fee just in case you are not 100% you will keep the phone, which I am never sure when buying no commitment. Plus, it is easier to get gift cards from Best Buy...
As far as being taxed for $749, sounds like a state issue...

I wasn't even clearly aware about price matching AT&T. The BB I've gone to just doesn't do it.

That does suck. They are not required to do it. The one I shop at has like 3 ATT stores within 5 miles so they call to make sure the phone is in stock at the ATT store and then they discount the phone to match.
Maybe find a BB with ATT stores close by?

I'll do that next year once I'm due for my upgrade. I'm going to use it to get the S3 once it comes out and see if anyone would price match it. Although I'm not hopeful.

The Note was the one thing that was going to get me to upgrade and renew my at&t contract...which I hadn't done since 2007 with the original iPhone.
But unless a 3rd party vendor drops the subsidized pricing rather soon to a more reasonable price, I won't upgrade.
On top of that, my current contract doesn't let me use LTE...due to APN issues. So I'm gonna wait to see if someone finds a way around that (if it's actually possible).

They don't make money off the subsidized phone over the 2 years. They get around $200-350 from the phone company after the sale.
I was a part of the group that started BB Mobile in 2006.

Thanks for clarify that. The main profit comes from the 2-year contract. What I didn't know is AT&T pay them up front.

AT&T Xperia $350 OFF-Contract?

I was on the AT&T site and apparently the xperia x10 is only 350 off contract. Doesn't that seem a bit low? makes me wonder if it is a mistak. has anyone tried buying it at this price from a store?

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I bought it for 550.............
That is currently the average price on ebay but the ATT version come with a 2gb while the other versions comes with 8Gb or 16Gb
The price of computers depreciates considerably faster than that of other products. This should be common knowledge to those who have purchased or had purchased for them a computer within the last three decades.

Go to ATT retail store they will give you a better deal, the online website is more expensive!!
I got my X10 from there yesterday for a total of $240
$150 for phone
$75 for early upgrade fees
+ activation fees
after you get it debrand it to LAM R2BA026 and you should be set
They are talking about the no contact price. Under contact extension you can get the phone for $90 from lets talk, maybe cheaper from amazon or wire fly

be glad you are only bind in a 2yr contract.
We rogers user are bind for 3 years at same price, while forcing to pay the unusually highly expensive network. But i won't complaint since their service is great.
Not saying they won't, just saying the original point off the post was about the no contact pricing, which if correct, I'd about $200 cheaper than other carpets around the world had out for at launch. What really amazes me about att its the disparity between the amount they are subsidizing among different phones. If I am not mistaken, the subsidized price of the x10 is $150, no contact price is $350? Iphone 4 subsidized is $200, no contact is what, $800+? How do they take $600 off 1 phone, and only $250 off another, when they both require the same expensive data plan?

the actual retail price at att corp stores is $300.
i was calling around to see which corp stores had them in stock and asked for the no commitment pricing to see if they matched the att website. one rep out of the three i spoke with, actually looked in the system and said $300. visited 3 corp stores in the last 2 days and all the displays say $350, but once they scan the phone, it comes up at $300.

corp stores are the retail stores operated by at&t. use the store locator on the att website and the locations that are listed as simply"at&t" are the corp stores (as opposed to the ones listed as authorized retailer).

I heard that AT&T doesn't allow 3rd party apps to be installed.. is that true? if so, no swype for u guys
there's gotta be some catch to this right?
350 is way too low, i paid 520 for mine.
aren't there activation fees, taxes, and such?
also the phone must come locked right, so u have to use att's network and u cant use t mobile?
350 is wayy to low, especially for a high end phone like the xperia, which in my opinion looks better than the iphone 4 and will probably perform better with froyo.
What I gather is there's an activation fee and early termination fee for the no commitment option, but it's less than $100 total which is still low compared to buying it on Ebay...

no additional fees for a no-commitment purchase (it cost me $320.99 out the door including sales tax). it is locked to att and you have to be an att customer to make the purchase. i have never had a problem getting the unlock codes from att on any of my previous phones.

Best Price Options? (which source usually best?)

I don't think I've ever bought a phone upon it's release date. Last time I bought from VZW was in my pre-Eris days when I had an LG VX8700 (still my fav non-smart-phone).
Anyway, in anticipation of this TBolt launch, where would you guys expect to see the best pricing? I don't know if the corporate stores, Amazon or Best Buy, or VZW online or a satellite kiosk traditionally have the best pricing/rebates, etc.>
Just looking for the most bang for my buck I guess.
I do find it ridiculous that they've not announced pricing. If they are "coming soon" they have to know this crap.
if your looking for online then go for Wirefly if your also getting a new contract( i wouldnt but thats me)
of if your looking for full price either amazon or bestbuy. i suspect it will be sold out quick so bestbuy's preorder would make sure you get dibs

Yeah, I'll be doing a new contract, NO way in hellz I'm going to pay full retail for the bugger.
I wonder if BB will let me in on their "buy back" program for free if I pre-order this week. I guess that new service is free this week only. ?

Im paying full $600+
id say Wirefly as they give a ridiculous discount. but dont break their contract or you will be paying out the ass to them
Been with VZW since '98, I doubt I'll jump ship in the next 24 months. I just need to make sure that whatever I do w/the phone it does NOT affect my monthly pricing (I've got that great 69.99 plan for unlimited text, data, 450 minutes and 5 friends and family #'s).
Wirefly is good on some phones, but Amazon is sometimes better with their discounts.
I will be adding two of these to an existing plan, and porting numbers over from ATT, so I think I will see who offers the best deal. Including calling VZW directly and pitching them whatever lowest price I find online.
ATT's sales/retention has always matched Amazon prices for me in the past and without the pesky secondary ETF to worry about.

It was a special pricing plan but it ended on 1/31. You had to be "invited" by VZW to get it -or- had to call in to customer service and ask REAL nice about their loyalty program.
My contract was due to be up this year, so I think that's how I got it.

[TIPS] Where are YOU going to buy your Evo 3D?

Sprint and target are offering 150 for used evo 4g, which isn't really a bad deal if you're evo is bad condition, but if yours is in good condition you can easily get 200, probably 250, and a slight chance at 300 if you post at the right time and include the right stuff.
Now there's also radioahack who is offering a whopping 100 for your evo. Like I said above if yours is in good condition go with Craig's or eBay, if not go with target or sprint. $100 ? Really radio shack?
Last of all is best buy. I'm not quite sure about there buy back program but its probably similar
Edit: wirefly is also sellin it right now for 179.99, but according to user RDCRDS, they ill jack I up to 300 if you switch the phone to another line. So for those upgrading your mom/brother/daughters lines, don't go through wirefly.
If you decide to sell your Evo through inline services, I highly recommend starting with craigslist. There are no fees or taxes, but the buyers are usually cheap compared to eBay buyers. With eBay you get a larger customer base and your item will sell for more, BUT and this a big but, sir mix-a-lots type of butt, eBay and PayPal combined, charge an arm and leg for their services. Those fees can be paid back with in 30 days so you can take them out of ur next paycheck to make your self feel better.
Heres a link to an eBay and PayPal fee calculator. If your start your item at 100 and it sells for 270 plus 10 shipping and handling, your total fees will be about 35 bucks
Once you sell, I recommend buying from sprint if the instant rebate service they're offering is still available at the time of launch. The tax charged on these phones is based on the full retail price and sprint usually has the cheapest out of all of the others.
I personally will be buying fromnbest buy because I put 50 bucks down on may 5th to pre order mine through that "secret pre order" thing they were doing.
So where are you guys going to buy from?

I think this is a pointless thread and is really irrelevant based upon the title. Ill humor you though. ATM im going with Best Buy but if sprint expands their new activation credit from another carrier thing that gives you $125 off the phone then it will be Sprint and the Sprint store I am near is not doing Pre-orders.

Much better thread then the another released date one.
So what you are saying is if Best Buy sells the phone for an extra $100 then everyone else, say $599, that is the price I will be paying tax on? Do you have to pay the tax on the full price of the device anywhere you go? If that is the case, I wish I didn't put $50 down at BB because that just seems wrong!
Can someone confirm this is how it works....

Its to what YOU pay. Lets say sprint is the only one that gave an instant rebate and all other places you have to mail it in. $200-50=150*1.07(for 7%)=$160.50 vs 200*1.07=214-50=164. OK so the difference is 164-160.5=$3.50. So it costs you
roughly a gallon of gas. Nothing to fret about. Also Best Buy has reward zone stuff and well the people that work there usually aren't as dumb as the people that work in a sprint store.
Also in reference to your $100 more that would cost you $7 in tax. Basically take the difference and multiply it by your tax. add the 1 in front of the decimal to add the tax or add a 0 to find out how much the tax is.

I understand the math but thought I would be paying the tax on $200 and not on $600 from Best Buy. So it is actually $400 more then I ws expecting to pay tax on and we are about .0875% here. If you trade in your device, do they give you the tax for it like when you trade in a car?
when I preordered mine at best buy the guy who rang me up told me that the gift card is refundable. I'm pretty sure bsed on past experience that best buy is going to charge 599 for full retal and sprint is going to charge 499. So pretty much you're looking at a 10 dollar dfference if the tax rate in your area is 10%! 50-60 dollars.
Wow that's pretty much the 50 down payment

and i should get no later then the 23rd.
im gona get mine at best buy because in oregon i can get a real deal. probobly around 250 with my 2 year upgrade in september
I already purchased two from wirefly. 179.99 no tax, free shipping and 50 bucks off when used with my BofA add it up. I might have to wait a few extra days after launch but I am patient. So out the door 129.99. This is of course upgrade price.
I went in to Sprint to preorder mine today. This is a corporate store and I asked about the mail in rebate, he told me they are going to be using mail in rebates again with the EVO 3D. He may not have been right, but I do remember when Sprint stopped mail in rebates they said it would be temporary.

I have read elsewhere on here that Best Buy charged people tax on the total cost of the phone. I have no reason to disbelieve these people but that was not my experience. When I purchased my evo from BB last year, I was only charged tax on what I actually paid for the phone. I'm not complaining but I do wonder why this is not uniform all over.

It depends on the state. From what I've read, that's how it works in California. Stores don't get to decide how they charge sales tax on items people buy...state/local government does that for them and they just pass it along to us .

That's only if you order online I think. I recently upgraded one of my lines and had to pay the $18 'upgrade fee'. I tried a couple times to get them to credit it back since I've never had to pay an activation fee because of my work discount, but they just told me their policies changed and it was a 'valid' fee lol. They said the only time it was not charged was online orders only. I can activate/switch as many phones as I want using the online activation thing and not get charged...but having the guy at the store punch in a few numbers costs me $18.
Just Bought mine from WireFly moments ago, $179.99 Free Shipping.
Wirefly is ok but if you have a problem with the phone it is 100% harder to get it fixed replaced because they do not have local stores.
For 20$ more ill go with best buy.Plus if in 5 months if you take the phone off that line they can hit you up for 300$

Get your Note for far less with far more from Costco!

Good evening fellow XDA and AT&T SGN enthusiasts. Been off the scene here for a long while. I preordered my SGN from BB and will get it tomorrow. BUT, I've come onto a deal at my local Costco Wholesale warehouse I feel I needed to share as I'm planning to do it myself.
So here's the deal:
Costco will offer the SGN starting the 19th for home delivery. Usually 2 days to deliver. I know, bummer to have to wait.
Price for upgrades and new lines should be around 270-280. So less than AT&T and Best Buy. (I know the 50 gc) But the savings continue past that 50
IN ADDITION, you should have no upgrade fee(save 36), no restocking fee (save 35 if you decide to return it), possibly the first month of data free (save 30), 90 days to return versus the 30 by BB and AT&T, free accessory kit (includes car charger, screen protectors, belt holster/pouch).
All said and done, this is one heck of a deal. They will offer both White and Blue. The only downside is the wait. But if you didn't preorder and were or are planning to wait, and you have a Costco membership, this should be the way to go!
Simply put in dollars, here is the breakdown if the info I got was correct.
Save 20-30 in price alone. Save the upgrade/ activation fee of 36. Save 30 (+/-) for first months free data. That's 66 minimum saved versus the 50 from BB. 116 at most.
Add the free accessories (not the best quality but will do and is more than a case)
Add the fact you have 90 days of protection from Costco none the less.
I make no guarantees of this information other than that's what I was told. I'm planning to try the SGN from BB tomorrow for a week. If I like it, I'll pay the restocking fee of 35 and get my Note from Costco STILL coming out ahead if the figures are correct.
Anyways, thanks for reading and I hope to see you all around the forums. I hope this information is valuable to whomever may need/ want it. Let me know what your experiences are with this if anyone decides to go this route. I've bought MANY a phone from Costco and believe they are the best place to buy. Too bad they were late on the draw for this phone.... :-(
That sure looks like a very good deal. Only accessory we got from at&t is the charger. Lol.

Actually I have heard there is no restocking fee at BB on phones.
As with Amazon wireless, I would verify whether that long return period is equipment only (or one could be on the hook for a contract if the device is returned after AT&T's return window). Just something to check into if it isn't stated plainly beforehand.

I can check tomorrow and will make a report about this. Hopefully that this rumor is true as I love costco's additional accessories.
BTW, if you will join in an existing family plan (new number/new contract) .. will I get this benefit too from Costco?
What accessories do they give you?
Where did you hear that you get a month of free data? I also think I did have to pay the upgrade fee last time I bought at costco, though it could have changed I guess.

The 90 days is equipment-only. If you return within 30 days you can also have AT&T cancel your contract, but after that you can only exchange the phone for another on-contract AT&T phone (or return the equipment for cash and throw the subsidy away I guess). Costco itself is very lenient with returns but they can't do anything about the 30 day AT&T contract cancellation period.

Costco has add-a-line prices, but it's often a bit more expensive depending on the phone.

It varies by phone. Usually it's something like a car charger, case, screen protectors, and/or earbuds.
I definitely recommend at least checking out buying from costco. The 90 day exchange period alone is a great reason. I've found their prices are usually a smidge higher than amazon wireless, but if you want the free accessories or aren't 100% sure on the phone you want it's great.
Just curious.
I'm part of a family plan and I'm waiting to upgrade. The $50 discount at Amazon is not available to me because of the family plan. Will I get a discount at Costco... or am I stuck paying the $300?
Starting to look better for prices, still waiting out on it going lower, come on $199 .....or less lol

Most costco upgrade prices are the same as the new contract prices, and they don't differentiate between family/individual plans (they have three prices--new contract, upgrade, add a line). However they don't generally discount as deeply as amazon. If I had to guess the Note will probably be $280-$290 for upgrades when it comes to costco, but we won't know for sure until they have it. In my experience the guys at the kiosk in costco don't generally know much ahead of time what their upcoming options will look like, but you could go ask.
Take a look at their website; they have all their current offerings there, and I've never seen them have different online and in-store prices. I'm sure the Note will show up there when it is available.
Best Buy clearly has a sticker on the test unit I saw that had a $35 restocking fee will apply on it.
No restocking fee. 90 day equipment guarantee. 30 days for service return timeframe. Typically they sell new handsets at 70-80 less than the selling price, which in this case is around 350. So hence the 270-280 range on the purchase cost.
Keep in mind also folks, Amazon Wireless is an ONLINE service with additional ETF rules and guidelines, more than just the carrier. If you need to return or want to return, there will be headaches to face. At least Costco is local and brick and mortar.
Accessories have been covered in prior posts and replies.
You WILL need to be a member of Costco ($55-$110 with $110 the Executive and has cash back accruals of %2 of purchases made for the entire year! So get paid to shop, that's what I do!) to purchase this.
Looking at the total package, I'm glad to be a member and make my phone purchases there! Piece of mind, great pricing, local locations and some additional monies back make me stay.
Not impressed I would rather get it for $250 and a free case that's a $80 savings not to mention the black tie insurance and I plan on keeping the note so I Really don't care about a restocking fee

Are you paying an upgrade fee? What about a car charger, screen protectors, possibly ear buds or a leather holster versus the flip case?
Just pointing out some additional advantages...
To each his own. For me, it'll work out better in the long run.

There is no insurance. You'd have to go through AT&T or buy 3rd party like square trade or similar.
Looks like Best Buy is a better route for you. Especially for that no deductible coverage. I'm wondering if that Black-Tie plan could be purchased for phones not bought at Best Buy. Something to cOnsider.
I had gone to 3 different Costco's on friday to ask about the Note and they had no clue about it. I had already pre-ordered from Best Buy so I'm sticking with them.

Black tie protection can be purchased on iPhone bought somewhere else but no other phones. And we don't have any restocking fees regardless of what you've seen/ been told. Some managers got in trouble not long ago for telling people we had restocking fees to avoid return/exchanges.

I work at Costco. Yesterday when I checked the price of the phone they had it for $350. Yes $50 more than retail. also it is only available for home delivery meaning they have to special order it.. I don't know nothing about getting the first month data for free.
It maybe different if you order at Costco.com
Ok so here it is. Costco will begin selling via home delivery on the 21st fir a cost of 269.99. You'll get the phone, accessories with no upgrade/ activation fees. No credit will be given for the first months data plan though.... 90 day return/ exchange program. There was also mention of a free extended battery as well but ill see that if and when it happens. No restocking fee either! Available in white or carbon blue.

dakleenupman,
thx for the good info. curious though as to how u get ur intel on costco selling the note starting on 2/21. i called our local costco wireless folks and they had no idea. no reason to question the reliability of ur info but also don't want to rely upon it if it turns out that it will be several wks b/f costco starts selling it.
thx!

DNA at Walmart for $139 ($239 with $100 gift card) - in stock soon hopefully

I was so excited when I saw this I ordered 2 right away.
Link
I didn't notice until after the fact that it was not available in stock yet but this is the best deal I've seen so I'm willing to wait a little and see how it goes. I was also concerned I would not get the gift card if my purchase was not completed before December 1st but I talked to a customer service rep and they confirmed I would receive the gift card based on the order date not the ship date. They also said they estimated they would receive it in stock today which was a surprise. Sounds too good to be true but fingers crossed. So hopefully this is a good deal and I will get my phones shipped shortly.
Anyone else going to pull the trigger? Post here if you have any thoughts or additional info.
WOW phones over in the US are mega cheap, would be like £500 here.

Keep in mind that price comes with a two year contract @ roughly $80/month and heavy fee, enough to make up the difference, if you cancel before the two years is up.
Just got my shipping notice so they def have phones in stock even though it doesn't show as in stock on the website. Didn't pay for overnight shipping so I'm getting them Friday.

Their website ordering is odd though. The pricing is hokey, looks different than Verizon. Did VZ contact you after the order to confirm pricing?
In particular Walmart has 2G data pack for $45 where its $60 on VZ...and Walmart only shows text package of $10 /1000 texts....aren't the new VZ plans including unlimited talk and text?
Sorry, this is a nice deal but I have unlimited Data which I know will change but I don't want them effin up the order
Just curious what your experience with the order was.
Thanks!
Well...that doesn't seem like a good deal after all...the $100 gift card you get is only limited to purchases within Walmart; whereas if you buy the DNA with a $20 coupon from Wirefly, you only pay $129.99 and you have the choice whether to spend that $100 on Walmart or not.

some of us use walmart regardless so spending the $100 there is a given regardless if it's in the form of a gift card or credit card

No, VZ did not contact me after. But it did take about 24 hours through the Walmart website for "Carrier Approval". I did not change the plan. It asked me whether I wanted to switch to a Share Everything Plan and I said no. So I selected a $30 for 2GB plan for each phone. The plan already includes unlimited texting. I also have 1400 minutes but it was strange that it showed 700 minutes for each line. I'll have to check my plan after I activate both of the lines and see what it looks like.
For some reason Wirefly has just made me nervous in the past. A Walmart gift card is a good as cash to me so I'm good with that.

Yep, ordered mine this morning. i stopped by VZ store to check out the DNA first and man what a great looking phone, cant wait to get some more time on it.
The VZ rep explained to me that I would pick the 2GB but that would be my phone and my wifes plan would stay unlimited until she upgraded or I changed to a shared tier. Which I may do at the next billing cycle because it would save me a few bucks each month.
Again thanks man for this link, we shop at Walmart all the time so that $100 will come in handy!

Yep, for $600 or more. Plus I think there is only one carrier that offers a discounted monthly rate if you buy off contract vs subsidized. Our consumers are too dense to realize that they'd be better off paying full price for phones and demanding lesser monthly fees from the carriers. Everyone wants their fancy new device for relative pennies but will pay through the nose in monthly fees without batting an eye.

I noticed when I looked at the iPhone store for the US once that all the prices were under contract, where here in the UK it's buying directly with no contract. Also here you can purchase a month by month sim and you get the same deals as you do with the full on monthly contracts and they're much cheaper.
Why I was interested in the Nexus 4 was because it's £230-280 and I could get a contract of £25quid a month, cancel it any time and it's the same deal of unlimited data as the monthly version.
Sadly no 32GB version killed it for me because there is no Micro SD either.
Walmart will price match Radio Shack, who had it for $149, but only if you have a printed ad. Then you still get the $100 gift card, too.

It drives me crazy that carriers are still allowed to do this bs. All phones should come unlocked at full price from manufacturer or carrier, and carrier should have to compete for customers based on value and price of service. Unfortunately it is @ss backwards and carriers try locking out certain phones so you jump ship to get their overpriced sh1t service for the new shiny phone. They make you pay $599, sign up and cancel an hour later to use on another carrier -- truly sad

I don't think most Americans would pay unsubsidized price for a smart phone. Sure, some would, but it would only take 1 carrier to offer a discount and people would jump all over it.

He speaks the truth. No one looks at total price anymore, only monthly payments. There's a good portion of the population that can't even get that right.

Has anyone successfully done this? That would be a crazy good price, making it $49. But maybe they would price match somewhere else for $199 making the price $99 instead of the $139 I paid. Either way I'm happy. My screen is dead on my Evo so I was more than ready for a new phone.
Also I looked at my account and everything looks good.
I wasn't able to find a print ad with the Radio Shack price, but they will price match any ad long ad it's not the Verizon ad, is what I was told. They said they just can't price match against VZW corporate.

Huh...is this only available through online? I bought mine from Wirefly for $129.99 and so if that price match does apply then I might as well return mine and get one again from Walmart
