[Q] ICS CM9 Memory leak and Battery drain - Motorola Photon 4G

Hi,
I have been reading that the beta's have a memory leak issue. Also this causes a battery drain. I have had the CM9 beta installed for 22hrs and my battery has dropped to 86% from 100%. Did I get lucky?
Or maybe the battery drain hasn't set in yet. I am unable to figure out which, I will monitor the battery progress for the next few days.
In the meantime I was wondering whether anyone in the forum could help explain what I am observing (extrememly good battery life).
As always Thanks joker and the devs for such an amazing ROM.
- Harakiri

I'm on awesome club beta of jokers cm9, and my battery, dare I say, is pretty awesome too. My theory however is that like atrix builds, Bluetooth causes the memory leak. So heavy bt users suffer worst from this problem. But I do know that the more often cache is cleared the less of a problem memory leak is.

So as long as we don't use Bluetooth, the battery life should be fine? Ive only had CM9 beta 0.1.0 installed for a day and 6 hours with low data usage and I am still at 49%.

I do not know what you mean by low but when I ran few speedtests on 3G I found my battery drain rapidly. I think your battery life seems alright. Try calibrating your battery. It might help.

the memory leak is not a battery drain

Now it makes sense. I find my photon having very good battery life. I was wondering if I had turned on a magical switch. Apparently I havent. Thanks for the reply. Wanted someone to confirm.

I had that same problem when I first flash cm9 v2, my battery would drain in like 4 hours. What I did is wipe, formatted everything factory reset back to factory ROM. Then I flashed cm9 v0.1.0 2d, then flashed cm9 v2, gapps v10, flashed keyboard &sdcard fix, then Oleg-petr-cm9-v2-1.3GHz. Now I get great battery life and everything that's is supposed to work is no problem at all. And I use my phone all threw the day, calling data and txing. Hope that helps..
Sent from my MB855 using Tapatalk

I never use bluetooth and I'm getting horrible battery life with cm9... It drains about 30% overnight. (6 hours) and with juice defender activated about 20&%.... I've calibrated over and over again my battery but it doesn't doesn't get any better, I've even installed watchdog and betterbatterystatts to find out what is causing this... Both reported heavy battery drain from phone idle and suspend respectively.
Any thoughts on how may I solve this??? I love ICS and i don't wanna go back to gb. HELP ME PLEASE

I am having noticeably much worse battery life on Jokersax CM9 Beta 0.6.1, and I likewise hate to go back to stock, but the battery life on stock was tremendously better.

just hold off patiently till ICS drivers are released. They built with what they had, and magic outta the air. once they have the ICS drivers for the photon, you will see a whole new CM9 beast.

This thread it's kinda old, it was an issue with one of the alpha builds if I remember correctly. Just an fyi.
After flashing it usually takes a couple of charges for the battery to "settle in." Are you flashing on a full (90+%) battery? I have never wiped battery stats and always get 10 to 16 hours on a charge.

After flashing to GSB (GingerShedBread) v1.9 CM7.0.0-RC1 my battery seems to be draining real fast not sure why . It has been fine on all other releases of this build i checked the battery stat's and it shows display as using 74 percent of battery usage but i have tweaked it like i always do to consume less has always worked before not sure what the problem is. Anyone else have this problem..

I wouldn't describe myself having a problem with either GSB (2.0 now) or GBT. I've been playing with my phone so much since starting with Gingerbread, that I know that's the reason I sometimes have to charge more than once a day.
I noticed my battery draining fast with not much use so I recalibrated my battery and now have amazing life

The last two releases of both GSB and GBT have had amazing battery life for me... maybe reflash?

[Q] Battery life (Hate to ask) Gingeritis

Hate to post anything about battery life, but I must. I would post this in the dev thread but not enough posts yet.
First off battery life was not that bad on froyo and understand GB has issues but this seems a bit extreme. I am running Full version of Gingetitis and other state battery life is great but not for me. I did full drain and battery wipe and calibration last night but seems even worse now . Phone has been on for 37 minutes and battery is down to 80%. brightness is turned all the way down, screen off in 1 minute, I have run speedtweak and set to battery saver, no gps, no blue tooth. I love gingeritis and the sense 3.0 so any assistance would be great.
Nope battery life is terrible on chingys GB rom. I was running it not good.
I'm using dasBAMF REMIX V6 amazing battery !

which kernel you are using?
i use the mr2 radio and 3.0.1 kernel. The batterylife is worse than froyo i agree, but it shouldnt be too bad to not last for a day.
Also, i think 4G drains a lot. My area switched form 3G to 4G and its gone worse.
I am running the default kernel, haven't flashed anything else. Unfortunately I do not live in an area with 4G so I just get 3g, I do run WiFi when at home.
I have the same issue.
I just tweak the speedtweak into option 5)
I went out taday. tb lost 10% battery per hr. Is this normal?

Did you turn off 3g in the settings?
I have turned off 3g lately, when I can get wifi, to see if it will help but haven't noticed much difference.
This is interesting because I'm on gingeritis with the included kernel and my battery life has been very good.

If everyone post their usage and battery drain condition. That will be more help us to realize our TB. Cause we might have different phone before, and we might compare TB with our privious phone. So I think this is the different replies on this thread.
ex. my previous phone is droid 2 global, and it has terrible battery drain as well.
Now I got TB for a couple days, and I feel TB get more battery drain problems. (of course, it is the first 4G LTE phone )
kernel: imoseyon 3.01
baseband: 1.39.00.0430
rom: Gingeritis v1.0
and I set speedtweak.sh as battsaver 5) and battery tip on rom's op.
that's I do to my phone now.
And I lost 10% battery life per hour (use 4G to surf on net)
Is my battery drain case terrible?
(I think only comparsion can help us to know where is the problem )
flashed a kernel a zip file,and 2 fonts.
Rebooted 4 time I total.

I agree! I was running BAMF froyo remix with outstanding battery life. Made the switch to gingeritis and the battery life was so-so, tried the dream kernel and for a few days the battery life was as good as froyo. Then random reboots forced me back to stock kernel with gingeritis with normal on speedtweak and it is slightly better than before.
There should be a new dream kernel out soon, I plan to try that one when it drops, dream kernel was great when it worked.

your stock kernel version is?
I am running gingeritis and a full charge last me about 7 hours, on a good day. Mind you, I am over clocked to 1.4 and have a bad habit of checking my phone even when I haven't felt it vibrate or heard it ring. Because of this, I started to notice that when I would pull my phone out of my pocket, the screen would be on. I'm assuming that my constant movement at work is causing my volume button to be pressed, resulting in my display eating up 50% of my battery.
I've been running BAMF Remix Beta 6 for almost a week now. I just got the extended battery a few days. It's lasted anywhere from 12-16 hours on a full charge with 4G always on. Earlier today I had it on 3G only and lost 25% in about 4 hr and 40 min. I am using batterysaver in speedtweak.sh with the kernel that came with the ROM.

[Q] Battery Improvements on 2.3.4 ???

I am still on 2.2 froyo and waiting for the official gingerbread update. I remember reading that 2.3.4 ginger bread was supposed to improve battery life.
For the people who already jumped ship and upgraded to 2.3.4, do you guys see any significant battery changes? Good or Bad?
Ever since 2.3.4 my battery sucks a lot!
my battery's about the same, but the new battery info screen is pretty awesome
I've not noticed a difference

My battery lasts only 8 hours with 2.3.4 and when I was using 4.1.8.3 with gingerblur 4.5 it lasted almost 12 hours. Not to happy right now
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
My battery has been pretty miserable after switching to 2.3.4. I'm a pretty heavy user, but before the switch, it usually lasted a whole day. Now, I'd be happy to get 10 hours. It's not so much of a problem for me, because I can usually get to an outlet to give it a bump charge during the day. I would definitely switch back to a 2.2 build if it wasn't for the CRT animation. That's probably my favorite addition to Android 2.3.
This has been discussed before and some people found that battery life is improved by freezing some social apps.
The battery on my Atrix lasts about sixteen hours.

My battery lats very long. I can go on an all day cycling trip, where I'm being gps tracked the whole time with a cycling app, location updated to the cloud on google latitude, checking in at new places I visit on foursquare and google+, taking and uploading photos along the way, some SMS, some email, etc, and I get home and the battery is at 60%.
On work days, it's off the charger at 7am, and when I go to bed around midnight it's still over 50%. WiFi on, Bluetooth on (and paired to a stereo headset to listen to music for a couple hours each day on the bus to Redmond), doing nothing at all to conserve battery.
I bought a spare battery because I just got the phone when the HKTW build leaked, and everyone was saying the battery life was atrocious. I take it with me when I'm going to be away from electricity all day, but have yet to even come close to needing it.
Mine sucked bigtime whatever i tried, so i'm back to froyo

Yes most battery consumption (52%) comee from phone idle than in second place is screen and the app that uses the most is pulse but only 7% and I spend lot of time using it. Reconsidering going back to 4.1.8.3

One time I did see horrendous battery life, and it was just after I installed Google+ and enabled the auto upload feature. Unbeknownst to me, it scanned my SD card and was uploading everything, not just new images. Hours of the phone being warm in my pocket should have indicated something was up.
When I checked, it was "phone idle" taking up all the battery. Those seeing phone idle high up on the list, are you on baseband 01.97.00R? I know I wasn't initially, but then flashed it wondering about 4G speeds and such. Didn't improve my speeds, but I don't see phone idle up high on my list.

I configured my Google+ instant upload feature only to start uploading when I plug the charger in and when I'm using wifi (when I get home). Currently using baseband 01.77.15P don't know what else could it be. I think its because the hktw is only a beta release

definitely very beta. The key thing to take away from all the bugs people have discovered is that it is very inconsistent. Seems like no two people experience the same set of issues.
To the OP: give it a try on a day you'll be near power, and if the battery life is poor for you after doing tweaks (like Navalynt's mod which packages up a lot of the fixes people have made), go back to 2.2. Simple enough.
I have been running it as my main build and it works fine here for battery. Been flying around and this thing has been working great. Average of about 13 hours on some good usage (watching 1 hour video podcast and a lot of audio podcasts) wifi and gps on , streamed espn for an hour and a bunch more and still working great.
THe battery has been conditioned here and there and working good but I will always check the usage and see whats eating it and freeze those that I dont need. That always helps everyone.

Good news that you are not alone. Based on my premature calculation, only 10 out of 100 (that's 10% ) ICS ROM users have good - great battery life, meaning the rest is having worse. Mine is falling into that group. I never have great battery, only so-so and below average.
Also as Nick has mentioned, asking for which best is a NO NO here.
One might be good for me, doesn't mean it will be good for you and vice versa.
Try them all and pick one that best suite for you.
My 2 cents......I know you have read this several times - but battery life is really dependent on a lot of factors - your AT&T signal, rogue apps, data sync frequency, CPU governor etc. etc.
read Entropy's excelled thread on battery drain on this forum.
i tried out a few GB roms over the last few weeks and really did not notice any battery improvement over ICS.
Currently running cMIUI with xxkernel and it is really working out great as in the battery easily lasts for the whole day.
I remember when I was on stock GB I could go upto 2 days on single charge - but that may be due to the battery being brand new. I have read that the battery in SGS2 really degrades fast
I have 2% drain per hour when doing absolutely nothing, screen off, wifi off, gps off during 8 hours overnite.
While someone has reported having only 2% or 3% drain over 8 hours overnite.

Have you tried using "Better Batter Stats" to see what is causing the drain?
I have been using AOKP since Task brought it to us and I average 1% every two hours over nite.

I'd also recommend using CPU Spy in conjunction with Better Battery Stats to see if the phone is able to enter deep sleep.
I don't get as good as you. . .I average about 1% or less per hour overnight. But that's with wifi on, periodic syncing of 7 accounts, scheduled backups and cache cleaning going on.

My understanding is multipdp will show when apps are waking the radio to use cell data - each wake instance results in a minimum of 6 seconds of wakelock. Switching to wifi when you are idle "should" eliminate this wakelock.
I could be wrong here...dig into the known battery drainers thread from around the time the first ICS roms were being tried on the i777. There was some discussion of it...it is a renamed version of some other wakelock in GB.

That's what I said, "maybe 3G/H+ toggling".
I believed that if I left wifi on overnite, do nothing, I still had 2% drain per hour.
Let me completely turn off data tonite and see how thing goes.
errrrr I have a huge problem with my battery. I've been testing various ICS roms and kernels(aokp, foxhound, serendipidity, fluxxi Kernel, siyah 3.4.3.,Neak) and all of them with the exception of serendipity w/siyah kernel, drain my battery real fast.
Not really sure what the problem is but when I look at what's been using the battery its most of the time either screen (which is understandable) and android os? I went to bed last night leaving my phone at 100% and woke up to find it at 52%. When I looked at what was using the battery it displayed, 93% android os and only 3% cell standby??(btw Foxhound ICS, Siyah Kernel) Maybe I have to many things updating/syncing?
When I first got my phone, 2-3% battery drain overnight was one of the things that amazed me about stock gingerbread on the i777.
I've flashed alot of roms since then, and so far, no ROM can even touch that stat.

Horrendous WIFI Battery Drain since JB Update

Since the JB update I have been trying to narrow down the culprit in battery drain that has cropped up. Going through better battery stats there was never a definitive clue as to the cause.
Tonight my phone has been off charge 3 hours and its drained 10% in battery sat on a shelf doing nothing, simply because WIFI was enabled.
One of the stand out features of this device was decent battery life up against comparable handsets, now that's been taken away from a shocking firmware update i'm considering jumping ship.
Has anyone else found any means of fixing this yet? Or just a case of waiting for Samsung?

Theres some threads talking about this.
I don´t feel that.I´ m on LJ5 build and sincethe LJ builds I´m very happy with battery drain, even sometimes I get 5 hours screen on with wifi on.
Maybe you update your phone from ICS and don´t wyped your data or made a fresh install. Try to do so and you should be happy again.
It's probably due to a dirty WiFi network that's smashing a bunch of multicast packets. Pretty much all the custom kernels available now have a patch to ignore multicast when screen off; otherwise you'll just have to wait for Samsung to realise they did something silly (read: never)

That makes sense. Always the same with Samsung, takes them an age to get a new software update out and when they finally do it always comes at a cost.
My battery drain is less after settings in advanced to always on and changing the location settings and turning off notifications in some apps and also in play store.
Also in maps automatically update your location might be a battery drain.
I've got a lot of battery drain with wifi on, too. Last night, my battery dropped from 29% to 0% (in 5-6 hours) with wifi on. I woke up to find that my battery had been depleted. UGH!
Must check what is draining your battery. I don t experience that... so far and from many android devices I ve the s3 is by far the battery frindly I have.
I i ve s2 and xperia neo dayly use and I'm happy. I use also some dirty wifi networks and don't have problems at all.

it's a known issue on latest JB rlses. Whats funny is that :
-The leaks did not have the wifi battery drain
- The wifi drains more Battery battery than 3G. I can have 3G on all the time the phone last up to 1d10hrs with 2hrs screen time
I'm on the leaked version. But on lj5 I didn't experience that so far.

Iv had my galaxy s3 for 5 months now and i dont know if its just the Jellybean update but the battery drain when having wifi on is really bad im lucky to get 1 days usage with the phone , i got my google nexus4 yesterday and iv used wifi and data for most of the day and im now in day 2 my battery is at 44% and both batteries are same 2100mah
think im gonna sell my GS3 as the google nexus4 is so much better with battery , but before i do i will reflash stock jellybean on GS3 without root and run them both side by side to compare results , but so far GS3 battery is real bad for drain if i install juice defender on Nexus4 im sure i would get between 2-3 days usage with moderate usage
i will run my tests on both phones side by side with and without juice defender and try to show
I have had the same issue. Though the battery drain is not drastic, it certainly is more compared to ics. If you require better battery life then go back to ics and flash Aosp/Aokp roms
