[Q] Looking for an app that will store GPS location in "My Places" with Google Maps
I've been looking for an app that I can quickly launch (widget is even better!), grab my current location using GPS and save it to an existing layer in my google maps account. If I can also a label to the point that would be ideal. After googling awhile I found "My Maps Editor" but it looks like it got the ax at some point.
As far as I know, you can view "My Places" from google maps in the mobile version using layers, but can't edit them. Even if you could edit it, it'd be a hassle to load up the layer each time when I just want to mark a spot on the map quickly.
I know you can star locations, but I've been using My Maps/Places for awhile so I'm a little locked in at this point. Any suggestions? Thanks!

never have seen such app

[Q] Google Maps App doesn't sync names with Google Bookmarks! How-to?

Hello,
I'm using the latest version of Google Maps on JB 4.2.2 [Nexus 4]
I noticed that I cannot edit the names of my locations in "My Places" in the phone app. So I used Google Bookmarks (google.com/bookmarks) from my PC to edit/rename My Places. However, the names do not sync or carry through to the Google Maps app on the phone. The names in the app are still the generic names, coordinates or street names.
Is there any way to change the names of My Places and get them to sync with the phone app? Really baffling!

Was searching in Google for same issue and came across this post.
Okay, I figure out how to reproduce the bug, at least in my case. If I star it on the desktop browser, it won't push any new name to the ios app. But if I star it on the ios app, then go to rename it in the browser, and then go back to the ios app, the new name appears. Huh?

I tried with one of my bookmarks and this technique worked!

I wrote that. Good to see myself quoted on xda!
Definitely this works on latest Maps app on Latest iOS. However, definitely this technique does *not* work (at least in my case, Samsung GS4 Google Ed.) using the latest Maps app (7.0.1) on Android 4.2.2. In fact, with this setup, the places list does not show *any* of the names I have assigned using the Bookmarks webpage, no matter what I try. Erg.

Google Maps from Browser Link

When I do a search for a specific store or location in the browser, it will bring up a list of places nearby. When I select Directions it opens up Google Maps in the browser. Is there any way to have it open up in Navigation instead because the Google Maps in the browser can never find my location with the GPS.
Thanks.

Well, seems like it wasn't working in Dolphin but works in the standard browser.

New Google Maps V.7.00.

Here is the New Google Maps Ver. 7.00
If you are running Android Ver 4.1+ download this apk

From what I have noticed is it takes away the Navigation and Places Icon as it is all in the Maps app now. Also Latitude is gone from the app and you can no longer access your Location History from the App itself.
I didn't like the way you control the street view on this maps app

I got the update thru the Play Store and now Maps isn't able to communicate with my contacts. Anyone else having this problem?
I can no longer search a list of my contacts to get directions or go to my contact's details and click on their address to get turn by turn directions.

I have noticed this as well, although I've never used it, but I'm sure for those that did its a hassle
Life is too short to be unhappy
Thanks for the confirmation. I chose to revert back to an old version of Maps for now. Titanium Backup saves the day once again!
Is this the one with Latitude removed?

I can find a contact if I start typing their name in the search bar.

Location sharing has been removed. It is now part on G+

Google Services battery drain

In general this is a well-documented problem, but it hit my DNA only after the most recent OTA. I am surprised no one brought this up here.
If you enable Google Location Services in settings, Google Services will proceed to initiate hundreds of wake locks and turn the GPS on for something like 15 minutes per day, resulting in much downgraded battery life. It will do it regardless of whether you use Google Now or anything else for that matter. Basically it appears Google has decided to keep track of the phone's location on a minute by minute basis as a default option.
The way to turn this off is to disable Google Location Services under Settings - Location and by setting to "off" Google apps location access in Settings - Accounts & Sync - Google - Location Settings. As far as I know this also kills Google Now and your location in Google Maps.
However, to use Google Maps only occasionally, I am not willing to pay the price of a permanently crappy battery life and be subject of so much spying.
If you are rooted there is a way to turn the location services on automatically with Tasker when you run Maps. I am on un-rooted stock, so that doesn't work for me. Another option is to use MapQuest or any other third party maps app.
Any other ideas / suggestions are welcome.

When checking the apps that use up the batttery, look at Google services and the apps that call it. Then go one by one and clear data and cache for each app then reboot.
Google services went from the 2nd most battery draining item (just after screen) to nearly the bottom.

Google maps navigation everywhere

Hey, I currently live in a country where Google does not provide turn by turn navigation on Google maps. The app itself is working fine and is very accurate, the only thing missing is the "navigate" button when entering a destination. While I'm aware that Waze in available and does have navigation, I prefer Google maps because it syncs better with all the Google Services I use daily and is just a more pleasing app to use imo.
I know it's a stretch but is there a hack of some kind to activate navigation even if Google is still refusing to support the area?
