Slightly Disappointing 4G LTE Speeds - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Got this bad boy earlier and im still getting adjusted to the screen size. Being my first AT&T 4G LTE device i wanted to put it through the paces. Did a **** load of speedtests and the mean is in the range of 8Mbps-10 and a few spikes above that. Being that this is a 4G LTE next generation network I'm a little disappointed there. My XYBOARD consistently gets over 15Mbps. Hell, my old HTC Amaze on T-Mobile even got ridiculous 15+ Mbps speeds on HSPA+. What's wrong with AT&T's network? No one is even on it yet.
I'm in SoCal, specifically the Long Beach area. I'm seeing other people get downright stupid speeds of 50+ Mbps. What's the difference between my area and yours? Is it possible that AT&T has done more work on certain areas than others? I really hope these speeds increase in the future. 8-10Mbps isn't much better than what I get on HSPA+.

It would be the back end is congested more then likely ... if that is LTE in your area.

I get about 30mbs in the San Francisco bay area...and up to 18mb in some HSPA+ areas.

I've never gotten under 30 in Orlando, with peaks of 56

im up in sacramento and dont get lte for some reason and att coverage map shows we get it here so not sure why im not getting it

Pretty disappointing speeds here in Los Angeles as well, hitting around 5-8 megs, on my thunderbolt I would rarely see under 12.

Is AT&T known to upgrade areas with better speeds as time goes on?

I got 52mbps in the food for less across the street from my apt.

East Bay San Francisco in Danville/San Ramon getting 57+ down and 10+up when I go up on a hill in the middle of the valley. Normal LTE down on the street though is about 35+ down and around 6+ up. Usually have about 3 bars, but if you happen to have 5 then you will have the 50+.

I got like 8-10mbps just now up in north nj where I seriously doubt they even have lte coverage so I'm not even going to complain as thats fine with me

Gone in 60 seconds.
That should be ATT's motto for their LTE service at those speeds with the caps.

Capped 4g speeds?

I have not had the high download speeds over the past few days. Have done a bunch of speed tests, downloads speeds take off when the speed test first begins, then seem settle right around 5500kbs. This is true in my house (suburb of Chicago), and downtown Chicago. I was consistently hitting between 8000 and 14000 before. Anyone else notice this?
Mine dropped also. In STL. Was seeing ~7-10 down, 30+ up. Am now seeing 2-3 down, 25 up. 4g (of course), 2 bars.
I'm still getting the same 30-40mbps down in Fort Worth.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Still getting 33+ Mbit download here in Dallas, but it seems like upload speeds are capped for me (speedtest quickly climbs to 5Mbit, but then just hovers at around 5.1Mbit). 3-4 bars.
Also, funkybside: Don't use the Speedtest.Net App. The upload speeds are incorrect. Just go directly to the site in your browser (might need to switch the useragent to "Desktop") and test it there.
Still strong for me all over DFW.
I extremely rarely get faster than 6-8Mbps outside of Philly. Even tried if downtown was better over the weekend, but was the same
increased network usage? / more customers per tower?

Verizion is still doing upgrades and testing on the software. No caps here guys... Just Verizion doing testing on bad times. They have also said they do encounter issues and notices leaks on LTE in which requires users to call if noticing connection dropages. Just something I might tell you all. I get 15 MBs download and 3 Upload. I keep calling them when I notice connection issues and they fix it within a day.

Just ran a few tests now, in the office, near the edge of our LTE coverage here in metro atlanta.
10mbps down, 0.5 mbps up, pretty consistent in multiple tests.
Not bad at all given I'm nowhere near downtown atlanta, and it's more or less "peak hours" of usage. Thunderbolt adoption here has been pretty solid too, so I'm sure there's no shortage of LTE users in Atlanta.

[Q] why is 4G LTE so slow in illinois?

theres a thread in the general section where everyone is posting up their LTE speeds and its ridiculous. everyones is so damn fast! ive seen up to 70 mb download on there.
me however, im lucky to get 11 mb dl and 7 mb up

Are you in the middle in the LTE area or out on the fringe? I don't have LTE in my area but when traveling to KC with my Skyrocket, I was eager to see it in action. As soon as LTE kicked on in North KC I began speed tests. Most represent 7mb DL and 2-3MB Up. However when moving further into the city it took off to 26-40 DL and 7-10 UP. I now have the Note so we will see if its different.
Where in Illinois is this by the way? I will be traveling there frequently for work each month and will check it out.
Are you sure your in LTE area? Look at your phones 4G icon, does it say 4G or 4gLTE? The reason I ask is because your getting speeds of 3g/HSPA+ not LTE (obviously). Many think that when it says 4G that means they are on the LTE network, I myself fell for this trickery.

This, I had to explain this to my wife as we dont have 4g where I live yet but her phone had the 4g logo. Same goes for LTE, you may be in a 4g area however LTE is only in a handful of cities at the moment. Mainly big ones. So like if you live in Joliet or southern Illinois more than likely you dont have LTE.
Same here
Well im in the Chicago area, where I know for a fact it's LTE. And my phone status says im connected to the LTE network, but I too get slow speeds around 2-3 Down and 4-5 Up...my so called 4G from T-mobile was faster out here in Chicago. Dont get me wrong the highest ive seen from my AT&T LTE was 19 Down, but most of the time 2-3 Down
This article is from last September so a little old, I skimmed through it. Maybe it can help answer your question. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2393286,00.asp

Using iPhone 4s Micro sim with adapter?

I had the Galaxy S II a few months ago but was thinking of picking one up again, as I personally believe its the best Android on AT&T at the moment. Anyway, I'd like to swap between my iPhone 4s and Galaxy S II. I did this last time and didn't have any real problems except data seemed significantly slower on the S II? If I could pull 4-5 Mbps on the iPhone 4s I'd get 1-2 on my Galaxy S II. Of course this was with speedtest.net.
I was wondering if one is going to be using a "Data Unlimited for iPHone 4s" data plan if they'll have issues like this? I was told I would not since both phones are HSPA+ and the data plans are the same. Thanks
Try this.
If that doesn't work, chalk it up to the crappy radios Sammy decided to put in the Galaxy S2s.
I swap back n forth without issue. Like he said, crappy Sammy radio :/
Since this phone has a 21mbps radio what are some average speeds? I can get 9Mbps down on the iPhone 4s.
21mbps my ass. I once got an 8.89mbps, in Oklahoma of all places. But everywhere else I've tried(several cities in Texas, several cities in southern California, and a few places in the states in between), I've never gotten above 6mbps in a high signal area. Most of the time I get about 2mbps.

I get 10-12 mbit if i'm within line of sight of an AT&T tower. Even in areas of so-so reception I tend to get between 3-5 mbit. Upload is more variable, topping off at around 3 mbit, and usually within 1-2 mbit.
That's my AT&T experience in the Boston area. It's worth mentioning Boston is an AT&T test city, and our network up here tends to be kept in pretty good shape. Also, honestly, when do you need more than 5-10 mbit in a mobile setting? I guess it can help with tethering... But seriously. Anything over a megabit to a phone is already pretty sufficient for 90% of today's tasks.
I also have an iPhone 4s in my house as well, and usually it tends to get slightly higher reported speeds, but I've noticed the upload on the iPhone also tends to be more erratic than my GS2. In actual usage it's nearly impossible to tell the two apart. Except of course for that 4.3" SuperAMOLED+ screen...
YMMV.

21MBPS HA! I live right beside a AT&T tower and I only get between 7mbps~9mbps. It is seriously 20 feet from my property.
The speed has nothing to do with signal strength. It has a lot to do with where you live. The higher population density, the slower the speed. You will get great speed if you live in the middle of nowhere (and still have 4G signal).
I did qualify it with still have 4G signals
I live in nation's captial and major hub for internet. And yet my '4G' speed is around 100kbps to less than 1mbps.

Did the same when I briefly loaned my GS2 to someone who's iPhone had taken a dive into a toilet. If you just line it up carefully, it stays pretty well put and worked flawlessly for me.
Due note that since the IMEI associated with the SIM's ICCID will have changed, AT&T might contact you regarding changing your data plan or whatnot.

I can attest to that.. When I was hunting last November out in rural Pennsylvania Mountains, I was pulling 10-12mbps (H+), but when I am in town at work, I barely get edge network speeds...
What modem do you have flashed? Go to Settings > About Phone > and look at the baseband version. That plays a part too... UCPLC5 seems to be the best so far..

Weird place for super fast 3g...

Just felt like sharing this because I find this very odd. Where I live I get about 1.3mbps which I thought was pretty damn fast for sprints 3g but right now I'm on a road trip with some friends and we stopped in Walcott Iowa and while still connected to the Chicago server in the speedtest app (closest server to my house) I just pulled 2+ mbps multiple times in literally the middle of nowhere haha fastest 3g I've had on sprint
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
That's because 10,000 other phones weren't using speedtest at the same time. You were in the middle of nowhere!
Rural towers where probably no one has sprint always work good. Or in many places Sprints edge of their coverage ends but on the past 8 years the city has moved outwards. And sprints network has not expanded like the other carriers. So the citizens don't use sprint in that area.

Here in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area of North Carolina, T-Mobile's LTE download speeds are great (anywhere between 15 and 30 mbps), but no matter what, upload speeds will NOT top 10 mbps. Normally it'll jump above 10 then immediately go back down to somewhere around 9.5 mbps and stay steady there. No idea why, and it doesn't appear to be device-specific. It did the same thing when I had a GS4 GPE, and it does the same thing on my Z Ultra GPE. Makes no sense.
The same thing happened to me when I went from the S3 to the S4, it dropped about 10mb for a few weeks and then was right back up in the 40's and 50's. Now, coming from the S4 and now using the S5 I'm in the same boat, getting 28mb down and about 6mb up. I'm not really mad at all considering I just downloaded Wolf of Wall Street in 20 mins. Are we as consumers getting that impatient? I remember how stoked I was to see 3g when I had the original Mytouch.

35 - 40 here in Seattle.
I have been an ATT user for years - when the S5 came out, on a friends advice I moved to TMOBILE - when I got my S5 and started checking speeds in my house and near work - I was disturbed to see speeds less than 1/2 what i used to get on ATT - at first I thought it was my S5 but when I put the Sim Card in my NOTE 3 -I got the same slow speeds.
I canclled tMOBILE and went back to ATT and was pleasantly surprised to find that ATT Speeds were even faster than they had been before.
Last year, my average speed from inside my houuse was around 6-10mbps -not bad - closer to work I got awesome speeds - almost 30mbps at times - usually 22-25 - very respectible.
BUT, now I am getting 12 to 18mbps in my house - and even faster speeds near work, often clocking in at 35 to 50mbps - ATT seems to have kicked into overdrive here - (Milwaukee) - this is not a commercial for ATT - many of my friends swear by TMOBILE - but I guess they just didn't have the towers close enough to me to give me any real speed - while ATT has become a rocket ship for me - and my S5 is faster than any other phone I have had before -

No one in my office has an ATT LTE phone but we have many times done a speed test with all our of phones out at the same time and the Verizon users get 20-40mbps down and I would always get 20-40 down as well, the sprint person would get like 5 down lol (on LTE too). VZ upload speeds are usually faster that TMO but that really is not a big deal.
There is a difference in the network coverage but I'm not willing to get rapped by Verizons prices for a little better coverage, that is what wifi calling is for. And in an emergency now you can jump on most any network with these phones so that doesn't matter either.
Where i live I do have very good TMO coverage, I completely understand switching because you don't have good coverage at home, that is a big deal.

I'm the OP for this thread and I was worried because I kept doing a speed test and wasn't normal. I just moved into a new place and it just seems to be where I'm at. I see almost 10 or more wherever I go.. the truth is , anything over 4 down and it doesn't matter anymore. besides downloading, videos and all other data required things are just as good if I was getting 4 down or 400 down,
