Roms! Roms! Roms! My heads spinning. Advice please. - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
Currently i have a samsung galaxy s2 and i been looking through the forum for the last few days for a new rom but there is so many to choose from i have no idea what the best ones are ,
I also have a few questions that im not sure about.
I am on android version 2.3.5 do i have to use a certain rom for this?
I am on gingerbreadBukI3 will there have to be a specific type of rom i will have to use that will run with with this?
Oh and im currently using cwm
Thanks in advance

I'm no expert but I have flashed dozens of roms on my s2. 2.3.5 is your version of gingerbread. You can flash any rom that is in the development section for the gti 9100 . But make sure they are for your version of s2 (not at and t or 9100g) I new nothing about flashing these roms until I read all I needed to know in the forums. (PS some developers don't appreciate us noobs asking them questions that are simple to them but difficult to us because most of the answers have already been given in older posts and we should read up first) . Main thing about flashing roms is always read the instructions on the first page of the roms thread before asking questions on the thread. Hope I helped. (Study the gt-i 9100 forums carefully before anything and it will all come to you) happy flashing and you can pm me anytime if you get stuck as I am patient

Oh and cm7 is my favourite rom to use at the moment because its reliable. Cm9 will be excellent when its finished but its still under development

If after reading you cannot work out what YOU want then stay with stock until a basic understanding is acquired .
Most users start with the question i want xxx and find a rom to suit rather than ???????????

difference between android development and original development is simple. android development is roms basically with a slap on theme on it and original is well original.
read this thread here for better explanation between the two
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1175660
as regarding unlocking bootloaders you do not have to as it is already unlocked..all you have to do is flash a cf-root kernel from chainfires thread.
here are links to help you better

above link is the chainfire thread to root and the bottom link read that first to get a better feel of rooting

New to Android and This is all Chinese to Me, help?

Haven't been on this forum in years and now back. Looking at getting the Galaxy S3 from ATT as the new iphone doesn't seem worth it after all this wait. I have never used any android device before so know nothing about their OS or anything really. I've used HTC Tilt2 device which was probably my last device on this forum and flashed roms and all that just fine. Looking on here though for the past hour i can't find like a tutorial on how to flash roms? Do i need to unlock my stock phone first?
I see people talk about using Odin which sounds like this is a flashing software for roms?
I'm really interested in flashing this rom, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1797334 as it seems like a stock rom but with all the upgrades in speed/stability/etc. How would i do this and safely?
What are the fail safe procedures such as i get a bad flash what do i do? Phone doesn't finish flash and gets stuck on boot logo what do i do? If im at work and this happens can i fix it via SD card while on the go?
I remember there usually being a sticky that answers this kind of stuff but have read all the stickies for this sub-forum device and found none that in layman's terms describes the above?
I will be reading much more on this site trying to figure this thing out but this really all is Chinese to me as i know nothing about android and their OS or flashing procedures. Remember the days of a simple rom flash on my Tilt2 device took about 30 seconds no brainer. I some how can't understand this stuff though. Greatly appreciate if anyone can answer the above questions and/or point me in the right directions as a total 100% noob to android and this phone. Thank you for your time.
Unless you want a bricked device....do not flash any roms from this section! These are for the international variant only!

First root your CURRENT ROM and than make a nandroid backup on SD card and than go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1705 forum and you can find everything about the AT&T variant Galaxy sIII...
Happy Flashing....
Check
www.Galaxys3root.com
It contains all guidance about rooting and flashing roms in all international And S3 variants.
You may also search for zedomax profile on xda about all these things. He is a helping guy host of www.Galaxys3root.com

[Q] Noob questions on roms/kernal etc..

This is my first post and I can promise this forum that i will have no more nooby questions after this thread. So please don't hate on me to bad... I just have a few questions referring to roms and kernels....
1. Are roms and kernels similar at all? Can you only flash one or can both be flashed at the same time?? Like you flash blackstar rom and you find a kernal. Could I flash the kernel and still keep rom? i know what roms are.. What are kernels used for?
2. This is last Q... What would be the best rom out as of December?? I've seen may roms... Padawan, blackstar, liquid smooth, etc... Which is the best?? Which would you recommend??
That will be all the questions I have... I thanks in advance for people willing to help me instead of telling me to just google it......
- matt
Dude just Google it.... Lol
Seriously at this point in your Android education you shouldn't be worrying about custom kernels. Just get used to working in recovery and flashing roms. Half of getting it right is making sure you have a rom that is for the SGHi717 and works well for you. So comb through the development section and read the threads, download the rom and give them a spin. Once you find a rom you like hit me up with a pm and ill help you find a custom kernel so you can overclock and/or under volt and such. Let us know?

Agreed with the above advice. Just look at roms for now. Concentrate your efforts on not bricking your phone. Read everything you can before trying to modify what the dev has put together. If you have other questions your welcome to come to the stupid question thread and ask here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32925977
Also a kind word of advice on your second question. I would consider removing it. Which rom is best threads are famous for turning into flaming threads.
As for your first question: http://bit.ly/X4WO1Q

Take the time and read the rooting and flashing threads..
They can be found in the general section, as a sticky called the "super everything thread"...
