Black Google Search Box Roundup - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I was sifting through some of my old files, looking for the perfect Google search widget to go with my phone, and I thought I'd put these out there to share with everyone else. I've got 5 to show off, and if anyone else has any others feel free to add them to the gumbo.

Top one is the Black Color Mod. Can't remember where I found it.
Second one is the Black Glossy Mod. I think it came from Maddoggins in the Epic 4G section. NOTE: when I pasted the .apk in the /app folder, I got a forced reboot, but it worked just fine after the reboot (I'm running SHOstock)
Third one is from di11igafs Gingerbeast ROM for the Inspire 4G. It's hard to tell in the picture I have, but it's actually a smoked glass background; here it is on a lighter wallpaper.
The fourth one is made with a app that has been taken down from the market, Custom ISC Search. You can make the borders, background, and more any color you want.
The last one is the GO Search Widget with the ICS theme. You have to have the GO Launcher to use it, but it's pretty sweet looking.
To use the first three boxes, you have to download the .apk, change the name of the file to GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk, and put it in your /system/app folder, replacing the file you have there already. Reboot and you are good to go.
To use the Custom ICS Search widget, just install it as you would any other app, and you will be able to create the box when you set the widget.

Nice! Thanks for sharing these.

Sweet I was just looking for this!
Thanks for sharing!

No problem. I actually think I have one or two more black themed ones somewhere. If I find them, I'll update the post.

Thanks, these are great!

Google search is a system app on my phone w/ option to uninstall updates but not app. How do I install one of these? It says application not installed when I try to install it. Its also is an older version then my current google search, will this cause problems?

Manually via root explorer. Copy it to /system, change the permissions to rw-r-r, and move it to /system/app (replace the existing one). There's a step by step in my signature (manually replacing modded system files with root explorer).

All i managed to do is lose my Google search bar widget uninstalled system app with tibu, but the box i downloaded won't install... Downloaded default one, but widget is no longer addable to home screen . Ill try your method
Im logged in app, dunno my pass to login on web: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1298129
I must be in a wrong folder. I didn't have an app to replace in system/app trying to replace: com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox.apk renamed the apk same as market app and same permissions but it says application not installed

I'm not really sure just what you did. You can't install like a regular .apk. Uninstall the app if you can, the reinstall from the market to see if everything works. Then do it the way I described.

I reinstalled my rom, then it updated on its own after that. Seems like even if I would install black glossy one it would just update out of it. But I still haven't figured out what time properly replacing. Which apk in what folder.
EDIT: I followed your system app replacement tut to a T. After reboot it said could not access/mount SD card, and something about usb storage. My widget remains unchanged and adding a new widget didn't change it either: (

Yeah, that's one thing... if you have your market set to auto-update, it's just gonna update it away. You have to turn that off.

I was able to easily install it by using the "darky ota" app. The file downloaded to "tapatalkxda_download" folder. I had trouble finding the file at first. Thanks for posting this!

Okay. I updated my app., and the best I can get now is the default or the customizable ICS.
The one I really want is the Black Color Mod. For some reason it won't take.
I tried a couple of methods. I updated the app. on my own I didn't realize this is an entire app. I just thought it was just the appearance of the widget and/or icon.
The updated version add features I want to use.
Too bad there is not a way to just change the widget and/or icon.
I gotta learn how to do this stuff! (Change just the appearance)
The Customizable ICS was my second choice so no big dealio.
Thanks for posting these again.

I was having a problem with the bland grey OEM search box persisting no matter what I did, but I found a fix.
Here are the main things to try if the new apk isn't working when you drop it manually into the /system/app folder (for those that are unsure, they don't self install).
Rename file to read GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk before installing.
("black_color_", etc, text should be removed first)
As mentioned, verify that neither your apps nor Google Search is set to auto-update.
...and the one that caught me:
Go to the Market/Play Store find the "Google Search" app and remove it via the Market/Play store "Uninstall" button.

Thanks for these, I'm rocking the black color mod on Shostock with the tangerine theme.

Just passing on the work of others, can't claim any of it for myself.

Dont forget to change the permissions to rw-r-r. Name it to exactly the original search box was named because not all are named the same thing.

[MetaMorph]Swype Themes: Voice Input only

YOU MUST HAVE A SWYPE.APK LOCATED IN /SYSTEM/APP/ FOR THIS METAMORPH TO APPLY!
To summarize, when you type "ls /system/app" in your terminal on your phone, you should see a "Swype.apk" file located there. If not, go to the instructions right after this notice in the post.
====Theme Application Instructions============
You MUST have this file: /system/app/Swype.apk
The theme is designed to apply to Galaxy S phones where we already have a Swype.apk located there. If you are using an installed version, follow these steps to determine how to continue from here:
In Terminal type:
Code:
ls /system/app/
If you don't see a Swype.apk or a com.swype.android.inputmethod.apk listed, then type this:
Code:
ls /data/app/
If you still don't see a Swype.apk or a com.swype.android.inputmethod.apk, you're in the wrong thread
If you found that your Swype file is located in the system directory, then you are 3/4 of the way to being prepared for a metamorph theme. If this is you, but your file is named com.swype.android.inputmethod.apk, check the next step to get set up to apply the morph.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
In order for the morph to apply, the file HAS to be named Swype.apk.
So, to get to that point, do this:
In Terminal:
Code:
su
cp /system/app/com.swype.android.inputmethod.apk /system/app/Swype.apk
Now that you have the Swype.apk in your /system/app/ directory, continue on to the theme application step.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are not one of the lucky ones to have Swype in your /system/app/ directory and it is in your /data/app/ directory, follow these steps to allow the file to be themed by metamorph:
In Terminal:
Code:
su
cp /data/app/com.swype.android.inputmethod.apk /system/app/Swype.apk
or
Code:
su
cp /sd-ext/app/com.swype.android.inputmethod.apk /system/app/Swype.apk
Basically, we want to get a copy of the Swype file in the /system/app/ directory, with the EXPLICIT name of Swype.apk, so that the theme will read it and apply it accordingly. Once you have done this, move onto the next step.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
APPLYING THE THEME
Now that you have a Swype.apk file in your /system/app/ directory, it's time to apply the Metamorph. If you have read this far, I'm assuming you already know how to use this application, so go through the usual steps and apply the theme, TWICE, ALWAYS TWICE!
If you have a themed Swype.apk, then you are ready for the next step, which will be replacing the normal Swype with the themed Swype.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
For those with Swype in /system/app/ :
Code:
su
mv /system/app/Swype.apk /system/app/com.swype.android.inputmethod.apk
Then Reboot.
For those with Swype in /data/app/ :
Code:
su
mv /system/app/Swype.apk /data/app/com.swype.android.inputmethod.apk
Then Reboot
==============================
Ok, in an effort to consolidate all of my threads in the Galaxy S forums, I am posting my WVGA Swype theme work here.
Most of the time I have to apply these themes twice in order for them to work correctly, so instead of getting ahead of yourself, or skipping over instructions in the OP, just APPLY THE THEME TWICE.
The images are only samples, and the on screen view is much clearer.

There is a black glass theme that comes with Eugene's ROM. If you don't feel like flashing a whole rom and all that business, i suppose I could throw together a MM theme for it. It's simple enough
Is there a way to revert beside using nandroid?

I should probably make a stock one eh? I see lots of people are doing that. I wouldn't go so far as to nandroid, b/c all it is are replaced images. Silly to restore the whole phone for less than 1mb of information
Yeah that's why I was wondering =) plus nandroid takes forever. I don't like the stock swype THAT much. But would be handy just in case

Yeah I definitely second the request for a stock one. I actually really don't like the one that comes with eugene's rom, it's not properly lined up and causes mis-types for me a lot.

Lovin the black glass theme thanks for doing this for the community man its greatly appreciated!
Very nice thanks for these. Love the htc/red one

Thanks, much appreciated.
So after trying to apply any of these I cannot select swype as an input method, its still installed, but I can't use it...also tried downloading and reinstalling swype.apk, however this failed to install, I really despise the android keyboard and samsungs is worse so is there anyway to get swype back without nandroid restore or a wipe?
Just donated $5 - would love it if you could make a mix of glass/transparent/and the color red.
Really appreciate the skill!

I would suggest downloading any of the Vibrant roms in the Development section and extract a stock themed Swype.apk located in the /system/app/ folder of the ROM. Then push as usual.

I'll put it on my todo list
So, i tried to make a quick transparent theme to test the method swype uses to display the images used. And.... same result. Only thing I noticed that was different was the image that was just covered up disappears after about 2 seconds. However, anything transparent will have a black background. there is surely a small color code somewhere in the apk that will allow for true transparency. I am not a programmer, only quick to learn. But not quick enough to program lol I can't modify apks freely necessarily, I would need guidance.
Anyways, I am going to move on to creating what themes I can.

I have been asked a few questions on how I got my NT to look like it does so I decided to post a few details. You DO NOT have to be rooted in order to get this look. My tablet IS rooted, but for other reasons. So first lets take a look at what I'm talking about.

1. I D/L & installed Go Launcher
2. I D/L & installed Honeycomb theme for Go Launcher
3. Applied the theme inside Go Launcher
4. Changed the wallpaper to this image
5. Went into Preferences>ScreenSettings unchecked "Status Bar"
6. I pressed & held the icons on the launcher's dock until I was able to remove them from the dock and drag them off onto the middle of the screen temporarily. Then I had + icons in their place. I tapped the + icons and selected the "Blank" option. I then deleted all of the icons except the "Apps" icon which I was able to drag around anywhere I wanted. I liked it in the upper right corner.
7. Then I went into the app drawer and began creating folders. I long pressed on an app, & when it started wiggling, draged it on top of another app & let go. A folder was created, I tapped on the name of the folder to rename it. Then I dragged more apps onto the folder so I could organize them in groups. After I was done adding apps to a folder, I then dragged the folder out onto the home screen of Go Launcher.
8. For my battery widget, I downloaded Mini Info Widget. I selected the drop down menu & changed "3" to "1" & selected "Transparent" for its background.
9. And for my clock widget I used SDS2 Clock Widget
10. A little video showing how the folders work.
Awesome setup man. Thanks for the info.
Thanks awesome setup !

It's a known issue with widgets- something with the order of how they load at boot. The fix for it (at least if using GoLauncher) seems to be this:

To change where the "n" button takes you, use HomeCatcher found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1356206
Then when you double-press "n" it will bring you back to Go Launcher.
Button Savior's Home button will work without root, but the back & menu buttons require root.

only issue is the problem with the widgets (mini info and minimal clocl) that were not working on boot unfortunately...
Sweet setup! Thanks for sharing!
I recently D/L LauncherPro and Button Savior to my NT. I was wanting to get some stuff from android market, but everytime I try to install something it tells me there is no android phone associated with this account, please sigh in with a different account. What should I be doing?! I really didn't want to have to root right now because I want to keep my warranty. Thanks

[APP][XPOSED][4.0+] xRenamer - rename your apps universally

xRenamer
rename your apps universally
This Xposed module allows you to rename your apps as you want. Some launchers have a feature that allows you to change the label of the apps on the launcher. For me this isn't satisfying enough, as the name actually stays the same and if you get an "choose an action" dialog the real name jumps out. The problem is easy, there is no way to. After noticing this module, which is created to rename QuickPic, I got the idea to create an app that allows you to rename any app(almost, see below). I developed the code further(my first android app ^^) to be able to change all the names at runtime and here it is: xRenamer.

System apps
Some rare apps(e.g the amazon app)
I am looking for a way to be able to rename these as well.
As long as this isn't the case, there are color tags in the app list dialog.
Green indicates that the app is an user application
Red indicates that the app is an system application
Yellow indicates that the app is neither in /data, nor in /system stored. Most of the time the app is an user application stored in /mnt/asec
Usage:
To rename an app tap the add button and either enter the package name of the app you want to rename by yourself or press the list button and choose an app from the list of installed apps. When an app has been identified, the icon will show up and a text is shown. Keep in mind that the add button won't be activated until the app has been identified. The add button also doesn't show up if you havn't entered a new name or if an entry for the app already exists.
To remove an entry tap the remove button. The actionbar will turn red and you are now able to delete an entry by simply tapping
it. Tab the button again to exit the remove mode.
To change an entry simply tab it and a dialog will pop up where you can change the name.
Although changes are applied during runtime, you may need to restart various apps for them to realize the change. For this purpose there is a button to restart the launcher hidden in the overflow menu.

I tested the app on my Note 3, running 4.4.2 and it's running fast and stable.
If you find any bugs, want to give your opinion or have an idea, feel free to do so.

Hey! Thanks for this man!
Work for most apps.
Doesn't work for: Dolphin Browser, .Sprit2 (FM radio) & Google Camera (in data, non in system).
Edit:
Working
I have been in need of this functionality for so long. Thank you! Did not work on DialApp and Today Calendar, but that is it.
Would it be possible to add the ability to change app icons too? With Apex launcher, I can change them on the home screen, but I can't do anything if it is in the drawer and a theme I'm using doesn't cover some of my more obscure apps. That would be the icing on the cake.

Thats actually a really nice suggestion. I will look over it today. It would also be a nice Addition to unicon which doesnt allow single items to change.

It's one of those things that always bug me about apps with horrible icons. I've deleted apps before because I couldn't stand look at them in my drawer. Even better would be to link it directly to installed icon packs and incorporate an icon picker.
I wish I could do this myself, but I'm glad you find the idea interesting.
EDIT: the more I think about it, the more I want to give it a try myself. I have yet to make an app, and I think this would be a great thing to start with.

Dint work for me for Quickpic I tried it with Lightning Launcher
I get this message every time I open the app. Please help!
@GalaxyInABox: Great idea!
I've a feature request: Please add an option to change the app-icon, so everybody could use custom icons (some complained about my "ugly icons )
Why does you store the settings on the sd card? /data/data/<packagename>/files sould also be okay.
If it does not work for some apps, it could be because of the wrong/multiple android.intent.action.MAIN/android.intent.category.LAUNCHER activities in the Manifest.xml.
The yellow package names are not good to read on white background, i recommend blue

This happens if the app isn't able to write to your internal sdcard. What device are you using? It could be the case that your device or rom doesnt link /emulated/0 correctly.

I already have some idea how to do the icon replacer.
And writing to the sdcard will be removed in the next patch. I found a better way to do!

I'm using Galaxy S2 (I9100) running Cyanogenmod 4.3.1. I think it isn't working because my internal sdcard is not at the location /storage but at /storage/sdcard0 or directly /sdcard. Is there any way to resolve the issue?

I have written a kind of hotfix which discards the use of the sdcard. The drawback is that it requires a reboot after changing the settings(like adding or deleting an entry). I try to find the issue, but if I don't find it quickly, I will upload the hotfixed version as a beta branch.

As far as I experience, most Xposed modules require reboot after I apply changes. So, where is the problem?

1.0 doesn't require it so I wanted to mention it.
Problem
Nothing happens at my device!II changed the names,I also rebooted but still no different name! :silly: With the initial release,it showed me the error toast, now with the updated version it doesn't show the message but still not working!
Love the idea, but it's not working on my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4. When I press "Restart Launcher", the launcher restarts and then a couple seconds later xRenamer force closes and no changes are applied.
So far, I've tried it on S Educate, Tetris, and aLogcat. All of which are user apps and not stored on SD card.

[Update 5.1 Included] [Mod] [Root] Google Dialer and Messenger for Pure Edition

Thanks to NekoNieves over on the Moto G forum, we now also have a working way to get the Google Lolipop Dialer and messenger on the Pure Edition X, and possibly more if rooted?
Original Thread -http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/themes-apps/lollipop-google-dialer-messenger-t2940395
Anyways, you can either flash the zip from the thread above ( personally untested).
Or like I did, pull the apks from the zip (included below) , and replace the ones in system/priv-app according to the file structure in the zip using a Root Browser, such as Root Explorer.
Instructions -
1. Navigate to system/priv-app in your root directory
2. Find the Dialer and MMS folders respectively.
3. Rename the Dialer.apk and .odex file and MMS.apk and .odex file with ".bak" so you can revert if you'd like. (eg. rename "Dialer.apk" to "Dialer.apk.bak" and so on.)
4. Copy the new files into the old locations, and set permissions to rw-r-r
5. Reboot, and your done!
Note. I personally don't use any of the Moto Voice features and thus haven't tested calling from the voice search or anything else related to the moto apps, feel free to test if they still work with this mod below!
UPDATE : Hey guys, In case you missed my post later in the thread I've attached the 5.1 Google Dialer files to the OP, you'll have to move those manually, it's not flashable.
Also, if you're trying out Tayrom's sweet Nexus Experience ROM, the M8DeodexedDialer.zip will get the Google Dialer working...
It's just the apk pulled from a deodexed HTC One M8 GPE rom, just replace the dialer and apk in your system apps with this one and fix permissions. PS> I also disabled the app called in call UI.apk or something like that, might still work otherwise, but not sure.
I can't get the GoogleDialer.apk to install, the MMS.apk installed fine a d immediately wanted an update from play store. I've tried clearing cache and just can't get the Google dialer to install. Permissions are set.

You shouldnt have to install, just replace the files in your directory and reboot, the apks wont install on their own, at least the dialer wont.
Works without problems, until now, on my XT1097 brazilian retail. Thanks for sharing!

The Google dialer was the one thing I wish I had on this phone, and now I have it and it works perfect. Thanks for sharing this!
Copied both apk's and odex files, updated permissions on all 4 to rwrr and rebooted but the Dialer was gone after reboot. Will have to fiddle with it a little bit to see what else needs to be changed.

Any negatives installing this dialer vs the stock dialer?
I'm missing the caller id feature from my old Nexus 4.
Does this also enable the Nexus-native SIP VoIP dialer?

It does not. It's missing that option. Screen shots from my Nexus 4 and Moto X. SIP is located under Phone account settings.
I noticed that on my Nexus 4 the file for the dialer is located as
system/priv-app/GoogledDialer/GoogleDialer.APK
On the Moto X, it's
system/priv-app/Dialer/Dialer.APK
In the ARM folder, the Nexus 4 uses libvariablespeed.so
While the Moto X uses Dialer.odex
I might try to copy over the files from my Nexus 4 and see if it works, though I don't know if the VoIP caller is dependent on anything else.

A work around is to use a launcher to bring use the dialer if you don't see it.
<<I installed the app but the icon doesn't show up in my app tray. What can I do?
If this happens on your phone, the only solution we found was to use Nova Launcher because it has a feature that allows you to run a specific activity within an app. To set this up:
Within Nova Launcher, long-press on the home screen.
Choose "Shortcuts"
Select "Activities"
Find "Google Dialer" in the list, then tap to open it up, and select "Phone" (use the first one in the list)
This will put a shortcut to the dialer on your home screen. At this stage, you can use this to access Google Dialer. It's not the cleanest solution, but it does work.>>

Maybe? Probably? I dunno thats one of those new 5.1 phones right? If you can root it then you can try, just back up your old dialer and stuff so you can revert.
Got this to work on PA unofficial ROM.
Just followed the steps but it didn't work just flashing it. Had to do it manually.
If someone could get this working for Non Rooted phones I would pay them. I miss this dialer and its search feature more than I thought I would.

Flipster is an Xposed module which allows you to change the icon and name of an app and also all the colors and icons inside an app. These changes are applied systemwide.
I decided to work on this because xSuite module hasn't been updated to support Lollipop.
Instructions
(Need to update again)
Bugs
Although it worked fine in initial tests, there could be some bugs which I haven't encountered yet. Please report them and I'll try to fix ASAP
Download
As xSuite module was available for free, I decided to keep Flipster free as well.
But if you like the app, a donation would be appreciated
Get it from Play store or Xposed repo

How to find icon names?
• Use a file manager which can extract or open an apk file directly. Then go inside res folder
• Inside the res folder, if one of these mipmap folders exist, you will find the launcher icon inside one of them (most cases)
• These drawable folders contain all the icons used inside an app.
Also, if mipmap folders don't exist, you'll also find the launcher icon here.
• Enter icon name in Flipster and choose mipmap/drawable (wherever you found the icon) and it will be replaced after a reboot
If you find new launcher icon names of apps, please post them on this thread.
But if you're not registered on XDA, just add comments on this spreadsheet or send an email to [email protected]
This spreadsheet will help others and also be useful to implement icon pack support which I plan to do in the future when there are enough apps in the sheet

I've fixed the bug and released an update. It will be available from Play store within a couple of hours.
I tested Hangouts and it's not working. Will have a look again tomorrow.
Camera (stock Android) is working. Icon name is logo_camera_color_44in48dp. Type is mipmap.
If you need icon names of any other apps, let me know. I'll update the spreadsheet accordingly.
I'm using LG FLEX 2 with Xposed framework ver. 75.

No, it didn't change anywhere i think... Tried a few other apps.
I looked in settings app and in titanium backup icon is the same, but in Flipster it shows as changed.

You have to specify the icon name. Otherwise it won't change.
Viber -> ic_launcher_viber (drawable). Try it and let me know.
I don't have an LG device, so you'll have to give me the apk of phone app.

Thank you! Viber icon changed in apps!
But there is a problem. LG launcher shows old icon. Both in home screen and app drawer.
I tried rebooting a few times, and restarting LG Launcher after boot, nothing worked
Maybe there is a cache of old icon somewhere?
Also I can send you apk of phone and other apps I need, but I think it will be faster if there was a tutorial on how to check icon name.
That way everyone can contribute to your google drive sheet.
Maybe you can add auto naming or selecting from list? After we found out all app icon names of course

Yes I will soon. Detailed instructions with images.
But basically, all you need to do is use a file manager to extract the apk (some file managers also allow to browse without extracting). Then go inside 'res' folder. If you see a 'mipmap' folder there, it will have the launcher icon inside it. If not, just open one of the drawable folders (xxhdpi, xhdpi, etc) and find the name of the launcher icon. Hope you got it?

What you can do is extract the apk and copy the icons you need to a different directory. That's what I do.
Icons are found in one of the drawable folders in the res folder of the package.
