Exchanging my note for a new one tomorrow - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I bought 3 notes on sunday, one for myself, my wife and my dad, so I noticed that gray banding and pixelation when playing certain videos. So I set all 3 phones to the same Vevo video (kanye west and jay z) and its a good video to try cause it has lots of black and gray, same brightness on all phones and everything else the same,,,,and bam both my wifes and dads phone it was non existent and mine was a disaster......I couldnt whip out the box and receipt fast enough. Gonna swap it for another and hopefully all will be ok.......I wouldnt have known unless I had those other phones to directly compare, so to all of you out there maybe you need to swap yours as well.....

Can you provide a source and name for the video?

Not sure I know what you mean by source, but I downloaded the Vevo app which plays music videos at High Quality and the vid "N***** in Paris" by Kanye/Jay -Z set to high quality, brightness set to 50 percent. You could see banding on the right side during the very first few seconds of the vid and then on the bottom along the main part.....the bottom of the screen became all pixelated with the very deep blacks on my phone and the 2 others next to mine were fine.....

He is seeing the same thing I've been seeing and trying to explain.
Here is my source go to veetle.com, and scroll down to a movie channel, one called movies 2012 or something like that. And make it full screen and watch carefully at the dark areas. It is definite banding but I think all the note displays will do this for now but the user is saying the other 2 phones arent doing this. I have a new one waiting for me tomorrow that I will compare this note with to see, hopefully the one I get tomorrow doesnt do this as thats the one I'm keeping for now.

Yep exactly, my wifes phone and dads werent doing it, my phone was atrocious, so I am gonna bring it back and exchange it. Luckily I had to to sit with and make sure all the setting were the same and play things at the same exact time.

That vevo app stinks for me though. Try watching the same video on youtube with hq selected, will probably look better. Yea for me looks much better on youtube, which vevo posted btw. I see minor banding and macroblocking but for a video that warns you about causing possible seizures lol thats minor stuff or expected on the display.

irregardless of where I watch it though why would my wifes phone and my dads look perfect under then same exact conditions on the same app?.....thats the reason why I am exchanging mine.

hey check this video i just made it i play the video you say but on browser on youtube desktop mode not mobile on 720 p http://youtu.be/gTxi_pOzNxA
plays like a charm for me vevo and youtube app plays the videos not so clear so test directly on browser using flash

I am thinking about returning mine after seeing u r post.

One or two settings must have been different.
Check the auto-power LCD settings, screen mode, power savings settings, etc.
While it's true that each screen is calibrated slightly different, the difference should not be so huge. I would imagine that the calibration is relatively identical across the screens or within a certain standard of error.
Also,l I would suggest you try and record all three in action to get a more objective view as I would imagine trying to simultaneously analyze 3 5.3" screens to be fairly difficult and might be subject to bias, etc.
DId you install other apps as well? Screen adjuster, etc?
The higher the base-brightness, the better the appearance of a temporary "band-aid" fix as it masks the problem by not having the phone attempt to render to lower black levels.

I think its the video. It's very pixelated. The more detail and shifting images on the screen per second, the more the compression is noticeable.
I would suggesting downloading a 720p video and test your screen then.

Absolutely everything about all 3 phones was exact....playing the same video....same screen settings....everything identical.....which is why I know my phone is having some problem with pixelation......at least until I exchange it tomorrow.....8)

There must be a newer codec or something on some of the phones. Heres my experience, Right at the begining scene where it says Kanye and the Jay, with people dancing in the letters on a black background.
1) Dolphin Browser-Declined to open in youtube, hit full screen within the embeded video. Put it up to 1080p, video studders and the black is greyish and to the right of the word JAY banding and bleeding.
2) Went to Vevo website(In dolphin), no way to pick video setting, same grey/banging and bleeding to the right.
3) Went to Vevo website in stock browser. Video choppy and froze phone.
4) Downloaded vevo app. Put on High quality still banding.
5)Loaded 1080p in native Youtube app, perfect Blacks and NO BANDING or BLEEDING!
Doesnt look that great on my 23"lcd either!
Whats the deal here guys? Sounds like the browers either have older codec that dont work so well with HQ video(they were studdering, lots of macroblocking) and th eYoutube app has newer ones as it plays silky smooth.
THough ive noticed with alot of the video on the web on this fone, maybe its because its mobile versions, the quality ranges dramatically. It may be that we have such a high res, the videos look worse than they would on most 800x400 android phones.
Most the videos have to be compressed anyway, even the video in the YT app had some slight macrobocking.
Now the one you returned, was the screen on the yellowish white and saturated red side? My whites are "warm" as opposed to "cool", save for some viewing angles. Turning up the brightness makes red too saturated, the mario brothers vs wright bros they look red/orange on full brighness, even on lowest still more than I would like.
I know every phone is diff. I had got a replacement Sayno and my whites went from cool to warm, same phone. Also, some people dont know how to shoot video, compress it or just have bad equipment or taste in editing.
hmm

How exactly did you load 1080P in the YouTube app? I must be missing something because my only options for that particular music video are HQ and nonHQ. Please share with an admitted Android noob.

Thanks, that makes much more sense. I ended up testing that same video in 720P on the browser YouTube and the difference is night & day compared to the YouTube app's HQ version. Browser YouTube shows the video crystal clear!

Just download TubeMate from the Amazon app store. You can download and save any YouTube clip you want in the highest format possible. When I downloaded some 1980p and 720p videos I didn't notice any weird distortion etc.

I had a similar issue the other day, and after reading this thread I decided to load up the video I had the problem with. The video was the latest Game of Thrones season 2 trailer, it has alot of light and dark areas with alot of shades of gray moving around.
So two days ago the video was unwatchable, and now it looks fine. I wish I knew what was going on. I'm off to work now, tonight I will investigate further, play with some settings etc.

I downloaded the jay z kanye video using tubemate and it still showed blocking when watched in dark room.

Grainy video playback

I don't watch Netflix on my phones that much, but i was bored today on lunch and decided to watch a Doctor Who episode. I noticed that the video playback was very dark and grainy (brightness all the way up). I'm sure others have noticed this as well but i couldn't find any posts about it. I know that the phone is capable of 1080p playback so i fired up an HQ youtube video and it looked anything but high quality. The pentile display could be the culprit in this case, but it seems like it would be the gpu because it still seems like the resolution is low. Thoughts? Comments?
Hd on my phone looks great. I won't deny the pentile display leaves a lot to be desired, but not on pictures and videos. At least for me.
Sent from my MoPho using the XDA Premium app
The graniness during playback is a negative characteristic of the pentile display that some people notice and others don't. The graniness is greatly reduced (even eliminated) when you turn the brightness down. I would recommend turning the brightness down to the lowest setting. The photon's display is so bright that you will probably never need to turn it up.
I noticed the dark grainy too, I thought it was just the program I was watching.

I've tried that and the quality was a bit better, however the contrast ratio on this phone is so great that the darks are dark as hell. I don't notice the pentile "screen door effect" unless i am looking for it, or if it catches my eye for a split second. Oh well, i still love the phone, i guess the Iphone's retina display spoiled me.
I dont think its the videos or the software playing the video. Its the Display Technology Moto chose to run with. Ive been on 30+ android / windows mobile / ios phones and this phone has the worse Display I have ever seen.
Its great that the display is in QHD res but the colors are awful on this phone. Coming from Evo 3D / Nexus 4G those 2 phones alone have bright colors. Especially the Nexus since it uses a AMOLED screen.
The photon is a GREAT phone but the display is just crazy bad. All my pictures / videos don't have enough color to them which then give it that grainy look. Shouldn't have to turn brightness down but even while doing that, there is still grainy picture.
Ima hold on to the photon for a lil while longer and then might jump to GSII.

The blacks being to dark is black crush. This can be fixed with software. Hopefully something like voodoo will come out to allow us to make these changes.
Also note that display also has white sub pixels in addition to RGB which is supposed to increase the perception of brightness without being brighter. At least that is what i understood.
Last note when watching netflix, 4g and wifi seem best. Not sure if the limited 3g bandwith could be lacking the addition black information making the blacks crush.

Black Crush. That is exactly what it is. Everything else in this phone is near perfect. GPS locks in seconds. Speaker for music is loud and clear. Camera takes beautiful pictures. The camcorder is beautiful also at 720p 30 frames per sec. Phone is beast. Only draw back i see is the display BUT phone is nice and bright while outside in direct sunlight. As for the display i guess thats when DLNA and Micro HDMI come in LOLOL.

Youtube - plays in web in 720p full screen (+ my tiny review)

I just straight up went to youtube and launched a Starcraft 2 replay from Husky - played full screen in what (I could swear) 720p - I could see every tiny detail - very, very high res stuff.
Everything's so freaking snappy, just tap - BOOM - it plays.
So, first impressions:
FAST!
Light weight - even my wife said it's very light (and she thinks iPad is way too heavy)
Feels very solid - rubbery back is very pleasant and feels luxurious
Screen is very bright at max setting
Auto-rotate is very fast, I think even more reactive than on my SGS2, even when playing full-screen 720p youtube vid
Screen needs a protector on it - I don't think it's gorilla glass, and by itself it's somewhat hard to move finger on it (it kinda sticks a little). Protector will fix that
Speakers - good quality and loud enough for me
B&N's UI is actually very pleasant - it's very clean, appealing to the eyes.
Can't get to any Android stuff through settings - it's all locked down =)
WiFi works great, good reception
Browser is very fast, I bet you anything it'll be much snappier than Fire's Silk browser
Looks like you can't easily sideload APKs. You can browse to them, but NK doesn't recognize the file.
Very happy I got NT instead of that wimpy little Kindle Fire.. (still adore my eInk kindle though).
Awesome news!!! Keep the info coming
I picked up my 2 hours ago also, here is few first impression i have.
Pro:
- 720p Youtube and Amazon HD video play smoothly, but 1080p on youtube is about 5-10fps
- Screen have warmer color then the Nook Color I have, in comparison NC screen have a slight bluish tint to it.
- Nook Tablet software version 1.4
- Screen is 1 piece glass instead of 2 piece like NC, i agree with DarkDvr, the screen will need a screen protector. 1 piece glass front is slightly better looking then the 2 piece setup on the NC.
- Speaker is louder then the stock NC, but not as loud as NC with the Nook Tweak settings. However good enough for majority of flash videos I tried.
Con:
- I believe the NT is running Froyo 2.2, not a big deal though.
- Flash player version is 10.3, which by itself it not a problem. HOWEVER I notice severe flickering in most of the video i played on youtube and amazon videos. I want to see if anyone else notice this problem with their NT, it might be that i got a defective NT, but when i play the intro NT video, I don't see any flickering. It might be flash player related.
So far I am a little bit underwhelm with the NT, I was hoping for smooth 1080p playback (like my SGS2 with a similar dual core Cortext-A9 processor). Also with the flash video flicker issue, i really having doubts of if i want to keep the NT or not, especially since i already have my NC.

Yeah, cause you're playing 1080p in a browser, and that is a feat only SGS2 can pull off. Try playing an actual 1080p video file in a video player. NK specs (including the back of the NK packaging) shows that it can handle 1080p video. Just not in a browser.

SGS2 has Exynos monster CPU in it, at least most of them do. NK won't be able to match this SOC's CPU/GPU prowess. But official claims are that it's able to play 1080p video. As I've said above, just not in a browser.

Call tech support, it seems it's your unit..
DarkDvr can you do me a favor? Can you watch this clip from 60 minute Walter Isaacson interview in full screen. and pay especially attention to when it was showing Isaacson speaking, to a static background. On my NT i can clearly see banding and flickering, most video i tried does this, but i think this video is the easiest to make out the flickering and banding issues.
http://www.macrumors.com/2011/10/23/the-full-walter-isaacsonsteve-jobs-interview-from-60-minutes/
Also if you don't mind Korean girl bands here is another video that show very noticeable flickering right in the intro, especially in 720p resolution
http://youtu.be/5n4V3lGEyG4
If you don't see it then it really might be my unit, and time to trade it in for a different NT unit.

Ya I guess I am spoiled by my SGS2's Exynos processor, but man i had high hopes for the OMAP4's flash video streaming capability.
Also as far as 2.2 vs 2.3, it is nice to have 2.3, hopefully that mean we can upgrade to flash player 11.1 really soon.
I'll check it out at home (no wifi at work and terrible reception).
I'll edit this post with my results.
Edit: Ok, i checked out both videos - watching first one was more painfull the the korean girls. On the first one I had tiny, barely noticable flicker, but I bet anything its cause of the format that video is in, probably NK's hardware is forced to do lots of work during playback.
No flicker at all on korean music video - plays better than on commercials!
Guys, don't worry
When we will have root, everything will be smooooooooooooth
Swishhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Some Cool in your face type 3D Viz Videos for you

After spending some time trying to figure out a way to make some nice 3d videos of music visualizations I think I got them to look pretty good.
My main attempt was to get the videos to be the in your face type 3D, you know the kind that seems like the object is floating in your face between the screen and your eyes so I tried a ton of things.
I tried Wondershare, Leaowi 3d convertor, Makeme3d, Xillisoft etc... With no decent 2d-3D convertors, I even went as far as installing the IZ3D Driver on my computer in attempt to get a true 3D output. I even went as far as placing my Evo 3d on a tripod and recording the pc screen music viz...
that ended up with nice 3d effects however quality was bad so was the music and it wasn’t really in your face type unless I moved the phone toward and away from the viz..
with still bad outputs I decided to use Fraps recorder to just record the viz in Avi uncompressed, then tried hand break, free make, etc. all kinds and then doing the 2d to 3d, none of the apps worked well, except for Xillisoft, the key was to raise the depth to 10 highest, then to flip Left and Right, it made a nice in your face result.
Anyway, thought I would share them. I am sure someone out there would dig it.
basically it’s just a song playing and the music viz doing its thing and pretty much nice 3d, only issue I have not figured out is trying to keep the size as small as possible yet higher bite rate and clearer, which most will notice the overall; quality isn’t that great I just wish I could get the right combo to make the quality perfect with the 3d conversion,
here is the links to a few videos I made , if some feedback comes that they are liked, I will be glad to show steps to make it or even make more, enjoy
Oh in case anyone curious, I used milk drop Winamp, RV viz, and old ass Vuzix viz I found online (which was actually the nicest looking of all.). That’s the "one called Dangerous:
Also It would be awesome if anyone has similar videos they can share I have not successfully found any online yet
here is just a few screenshots of the video:
Note: I noticed that they each have a different eye distance spot so if it looks or strains your eyes try moving it closer or further
And here is the first 5 videos I uploaded.

With all due respect , Not sure if your wife's ass aint hitting right today or you are just one of those lonely sad mad at the world type people with nothing but negative comments due to your personal dark secrets that you have been completely hiding due to the shock you received at an early age..
But anyway, ya actually to clear it up, filming a music viz with a 3d camera comes out pretty good and in 3d, especially with a stable filming like a tripod
so I don't understand maybe I am just too "stupid" to even understand why your negative comment made any sense as to why I was stupid for doing that.. It's funny how this forum at once was full of friendly and interesting members and lately it's become flooded with one liner morons that like to talk smack without even opening their minds or explaining their reason for being so ignorant..
..also
the 3d Youtube idea was great I had not realized that their uploads allow a 2d-3d experimental conversion which I am trying out now, thanks for the heads up on that.
Allright, so i downloaded one to check it out, and it just shows me the side by side when I play in my EVO3D. Do I need to convert it or something?

well I know of all those sites .including sikflicks and many others but like I said on first post , all these google half sbs.and.such searches never really lead me to any viz type videos mostly are movies or short films .. So I wouldnt really call it.nonsense ..as a matter of.fact I have.shown these videos to about 3- 4 friends.whom all have an EVO 3d.and.they were all impressed and stated they have.seen.nothing like it in 3d especially the depth . What needs to be done.which would.be really cool is for someone.to create an app like that Winamp viz called MilkDROP. Or even add some 3d support to "project M" THAT WOULD Be awesome
Oh I just also noticed if you are viewing the videos and notice no 3d then you are probably watching the video upside down and and have the auto rotation locked ..just watched it in the wrong way and noticed the depth was reversed when I had auto rotate off ..

Downloaded and tried the first vid, here is my constructive criticism:
Bitrate is way too low or encoder is way too bad, many scenes with big blocks/squares typical of too low bitrate for high motion videos. VBR may help too (varible bitrate), but a huge increase in bitrate is a must, or lower resolution.
Video has flipped left/right, as described in the text above, I had to rotate the Evo3D slightly to get the correct 3D view.
Problem is that flipping left/right for 3D video with objects deep into the screen, does not give you out of screen effects. The source has to be correct and show out of screen 3d to begin with. The following video shows perfect out of screen 3D, the logo is always within the screen border (reb/blue only, but you will get the point): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4woa-Hodg4
In this case, you need to work with the 3d driver settings and adjust the parameters and it will only work for a few scenes, for example the metaballs that never leave the screen.
Tunnel sequence does not need to be out of screen to be kickass in 3D.
A tip is to hook up your PC or Evo 3D to your 3DTV or 3D projector.
You or your friends will get motion sickness within 1 minute, brilliant

Good video test?

Does anyone have a recommendation of a Youtube video that would be good for testing the screen on a phone?
I'm thinking of waiting until the S3 comes out so I can compare the screens side by side, but I'm guessing most stores aren't going to let me bring in my own SD card with a test video on it.
I'm wanting a HD video that shows off skin tone, color saturation, and blacks so I can decide for myself which screen looks better.
Batman: The Dark Knight is pretty much the standard go-to for videophiles for showcasing their HDTV's capabilities. Pretty sure you could find an HD clip on YT.
For me, when the screens are close in quality compared to each other, it can be really difficult to see the differences using "movies" unless you're taking screen shots.
I'd recommend you use calibration videos similar to these. These can really highlight the differences in pixel density, pentile, etc.

[Q] YouTube Uploading

So I have uploaded two video's to YouTube.
I have recorded both of these videos on the LTEEvo with the 1080 settings turned on.
When uploaded, it seems to only be uploading at max 480p.
This last video I uploaded of me testing out the LTEEvo Slow Motion Camera Option (Which is freaking bad ass) only uploaded at 360p.
Any idea how to fix this / set it to upload at 1080p?
If you want to see the slow motion video:
http://youtu.be/57-TclhU9Ts
I look like a bad ass walking away from the camera, but then I ruined it by hopping around like a little hoe.
The lighting is a bit bad. I just had a single window in the kitchen and I had no lights on.
I was just seeing if it actually worked.. I am very impressed with it.

Yeah, I realized that after I thought about the actual process I had to go through to make "fake" slow motion.
You can tell by watching the video that the quality is degraded a bit by adding so many more frames/p sec.
Oh well, the option and the result is still pretty damn sick.
Awesome, with that look on your face then a shirt that says pillage naked... Nice vid man I felt like the haduken was coming right at me too... I am surprised the slow mo is so fluid.
