HC AOSP browser with Sense HC Rom? - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

I really like the stock AOSP browser that comes with HC and hate the Sense version. I can extract the AOSP browser from an HC AOSP rom but when I try to run it in a Sense rom it FC's.
Any idea how to get that browser to work in Sense?

yes sir
you have to use root expolrer or any file explorer that has root access. Install the app into system app and set permissions to match other system apps

Then you need to go to data/data/
look for browser and select, then go to databases. There is a couple files in there. You need to delete the 3 that have browser2 in it, I do not have my Flyer on me so I can not recall the actual names. Then reboot
I do this every time I flash another rom as I am a big fan of the stock HC browser

Excellent. Will give this a try and report back.
**Update.
Ok, once I deleted the stock browser and rebooted it worked. Thank you so much.
What am I missing?

what do you mean?
If you are asking why those files need to be deleted my understanding is that they are built by the browser. So since the browser has the same apk in name in both cases when you replace the HTC browser with the HC browser it looks to these dbs and those force closes because they are not compatible. So by deleting them and rebooting the new browser creates corrected db on boot. If you look back in data/data the browser2 dbs are back.

[Request] Deodexed, zipaligned Stock apks

Hi all - I've flashed the Super Clean ROM v0.4 by jt1134, but I'm finding that I much preferred the stock music player, and noticed a lack of "ThinkFree Office" in this release, which got me to thinking;
Is there a place to download optimized, deodexed, zipaligned, [insert optimization buzzword here] apks for every one of the stock apps that were included with the Fascinate? Something we can just adb push onto our customized ROMs after the fact?
Again, I'm thinking mostly of the music app and ThinkFree office (I know I can download a free version... was the stock app the for-pay version, or was it the free "lite" version?), but I know that some people also like the stock mms app, etc.
Thanks!

I was just going to start looking for the deodexed system dump. I, too, miss the stock music player. Anyone got a link, and will it work with JT's rom? And how should we install it? Using a file manager, pushing it with adb, or putting it somewhere with root explorer?
I need this ro try and push the stock market app. The froyo update won't download apps.

frostman released a set already:

You can just pull stuff out of the zip.

Or you can DeOdex your system manually I have used this method and it works, Only exception is at step "5. IMPORTANT: After you have run option 3, you MUST navigate to the xUltimate folder and find "origi_frame" folder, and delete "vzwlbs.odex" (instead of this file that does not exist on a Fascinate - "guava.odex".) It's a bad file, and interferes with deodexing process."
I was actually going to request the stock calender apk. The samsung one looks better but takes away too much functionality. I guess they really do like apple haha. I need to know what's next on my schedule without remembering to look for it.
Jt has been slowly adding some of the stock apps as well as some of the AOSP apps to the "extra" folder in ROM manager. I'm guessing if there is enough interest in adding an app he would be willing to provide it. I'm fairly certain that donations to his "beer fund" would help prompt interest.
Jt hangs out in #Samsung-fascinate on freenode a lot, you could *politely* request that he add an app there.
i copied ClockPackage.apk and Mms.apk from frost's rom to /system/app and it all worked. I got back stock versions of both, I believe if you rename DeskClock.apk to DeskClock.apk.bck or delete it you can remove altogether JT's clock.
I wonder where the Verizon stuff is, like the info app that shows you minutes/texts/data used.

I'd like this app as well, if you're able to get it working. I'd try it myself, but I'm at work ATM.
I think its this "I500_MyVerizon_05202010.apk" I saw it in the full system dump. However that dump is not deodexed and from original release. don't know if it would work and don't wanna screw up my system.
You should be able to grab them from a system dump.
The fascinate stock apps that are not included in frosty's zip were never odexed in the first place.
The way frosty's zip to deodex works is by removing the odex files, and replacing the corresponding apk with the deodexed versions.
Can you just take the apk from the dump and install it? I need thinkfree back as well. Does this work or do you have to get the apk and odex file from the dump and paste into the system/app folder?
I remember having a deodexed rom on my D1 and installing apps from the market with no problems. Can I just add the apk to my sdcard and install?
Thanks
I would just copy them to system/app
I do not know if any of them are actually installable if you just run, them on your phone.
If it doesn't have an odex in the system dump, it probably doesn't need one.
I like the file manager "my files" that comes with the stock rom. I might get heat for this, but its nice to have that already installed and or a zip to install via clockwork for other roms.

Gmail From Ice Cream Sandwich

Gmail From Ice Cream Sandwich works on the Flyer using Honeycomb.
Get it here. Has some GUI tweaks and better offline archive and attachment handling.

Do you know if it will work on a stock rooted flyer?
i have only tried it on rooted Honeycomb Flyer.
Nope couldn't get it to work guess ill have to upgrade to HC now... lol
I need to try this out tonight
I want to restore my old gmail apk because the ics version always gets forced to close. But I'm not able to install the old one, it always fails... Is there another way to restore it?
I followed the same instructions from ics to restore the old apk without success. Plz help me out.
use any file explorer with root permissions and or adb. Assuming a file explorer copy the old apk to the system app folder and paste, overwrite. Then either change the permisions on the app to match that of the other apps in your system folder, should be
xxo
xoo
xoo
then reboot

I didn't have any luck getting the new Gmail to run on a rooted GB View. It still runs the old version (2.3.5.2) even though I exited Gmail, renamed /system/app/Gmail.apk to Gmail.apk.bak, replaced it with the new Gmail.apk, set the permissions, and rebooted.
It seems to be getting the app from somewhere else. Any ideas or is there just no way it will work on GB? I hate wasting all that screen real estate.
Don't believe this will work with GB, only with HC

Is there a way to change an app....I try with all the file manager but it won't...

I tried to rename and move and delete the calendar app on CM7.2 rom, but root explorer and all other won't let me. It says it is only readable. I googled and didn't find anything. I pulled the calendar apk file off my other rom. It's the best calendar app I've seen so far. Is there a way to back up the photon with nandroid then somehow unzip it and replace the app and rezip and reflash? Something simpler would be nice.
Did you mount the system as writable (its in the settings of ES File Explorer, but might be somewhere else on other apps)

Ok awesome it worked after I did what you said, thank you. I put the calendar app I took of my other rom and put it in the app folder and fixed permissions and rebooted, but it didn't show up when I looked at apps. I went to the app folder and clicked on it said "failed to install" after attempting to install. Maybe I'm not doing it correctly. How should I take an app from another rom and install it?
Stock apps, specifically, are very finicky with regards to version. If you are trying to use a 2.3.4 version on 2.3.5, for example, it may be more complicated than simply copying over and fixing permissions...there may be some dependancies on other files (systemui.apk or framework-res.apk for example). You are now exceeding my knowledge level with this topic...sorry.

Ok, that does explain a lot, thank you. I won't spend too much time messing with it. I found a "biz calendar" that is great and other apps that are pretty good. I'll wait for a nice ICS rom to come out and start all over =)

Do you think the new apps will be more optimized for ICS and not backward compatible?
Eventually that will be so, but right now, over 60% of the Android Community is running Gingerbread... A Developer would be stupid not to allow Gingerbread use.... ie. Google with Google Chrome Beta..... but for now, most will work from ICS down and Gingerbread and up.....
Not too many apps are being made for below Gingerbread... my point is --- you should be fine, nothing to worry about, also, most gingerbread apps are compatible with ICS, so again remember that and the fact that only about 1-3% of the Android Community is running ICS....

Can I replace the stock email.apk?

I don`t like at all the all black background and UI fo the TW email app so I would like to replace the email app from ICS/ JB stock ROM with the stock Google one.
How can I do it and do you have the stock apps to share?

I agree and have been looking for the mail.apk that comes with JB, im assuming you replace the original crappy Sammy one with the apk using a root explorer type app.
The black and white of the Samsung app is just not readable in my opinion; the stock JB is great
yes you can change it through root explorer or es explorer, you can find the apk of the email for ics or jb, then you have to replace also the exchange.apk as if it supports the stock android apps. make sure you fix the permissions too. I'm using stock as I hate the sammy mail
Ok i've uploaded them for you,
Make sure to backup the exchange.apk and mail.apk
use a root file explorer,
/system/app/
Place them their and make sure you fix the permissions.
thanks. are they ICS or JB?
I zipped the original ones with root explorer then deleted and pasted the new ones. but before I could set permissions my phone froze completely and I cannot do anything more now.
any advice?
They are ICS, but they are almost exactly the same as the JB,
you need to replace them after backing up, make sure that you set the permissions the same as every other apk in the system/app/ folder, after you finish everything restart your phone and it should work perfectly, if anything doesnt work perfectly, then go to recovery and go to fix permissions, it should sort everything out.

[GUIDE] AOSP browser with Flash support

I was surprised when I launched the new Samsung stock browser and it lacked flash support!! Well, shouldn't say surprised since this phone released with JB 4.2.2 which does not support flash... so not much support given in the thread of flash playing, just for getting it installed.
So, with root... I solved this issue and now so can you!
I used the files from from Nexus 7. As soon as we get something that is more for our device, I will change the source.
Requirements:
1) ROOT - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2252248
2) Grab the Browser - http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1753139&d=1361590018 ( thanks to sikagoon7 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38356096&postcount=354)
3) Grab ChromeBookmarkSyncAdapter if you want it - http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1980058&d=1369154901
4) Grab the flash apk (current: 11.1.115.58) - http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html
Steps to do:
1) Push the files to sdcard
2) Rename Browserproxyprovider files by adding .bak to end of the file name (or remove the file) in /system/app
3) Push Browser.apk to /system/app and change the file permission rw-r--r--
4) Push ChromeBookmarkSyncAdapter.apk to /system/app and change the file permission rw-r--r--
5) Install flash
6) Reboot (IMPORTANT: purpose of Browserproxyprovider is to block other browsers so AOSP will crash if you do not reboot after install)
7) Launch browser
If having issues, grab terminal emulator and clear dalvik cache and reboot
Code:
su
cd /data/dalvik-cache
rm *
reboot
Works great! Thanks. Glad I can still use the stock browser too!

You can certainly try and see what happens, as far as I know the purpose of the file is to block browsers (that's the behavior on my nexus 7). So it might crash the AOSP browser if it loads.

Okay tested. If you rename Browser.Provider.Proxy.apk back to normal AFTER you've confirmed Browser runs properly, it won't cause a crash.
Is this safe to delete altogether? Does anyone know what it does?

I have it removed on my devices. I haven't seen any repercussion yet in removing, only with it installed (AOSP browser not running). Afaik, the real purpose for the is just to be annoying not allowing for extra browsers in /system partition. :silly:

In order to get proper reflow of text on doubleclick, I have resorted to using browser from my note 8 and while that crashes now on my phone on doubleclick and bookmarks, the third party app quick ics browser that uses it as a base, works flawlessly now.
JKAY DELUXE [I9300 JB 4.1.2]
Boat Browser, as well as Dolphin browser will do text reflow as well. So will my new favorite browser Sleipnir. The previous three browsers mentioned all use the old browser engine (non Chrome) that is still included with the stock rom.
I take it back, looks like smart reflow (doubleclick to reflow after pinch to zoom, without taking you back to overview) works with aosp as well. Apologies.

So installing this new AOSP browser will still let me keep S4 stock browser??
It shouldn't remove it since it just adds the APK but no guarantees even if it kills your dog.
I gave the OP a "thanks". This stock browser works great per the instructions. I can once again sync my Bookmarks with Google and I now have Flash.
The stock browser in my I9505 was lagging on some sites with java scripts. Beside, while in full screen mode the navigation bar was not auto hiding.
This solved my problems. Thx.
