[Q] What is the typical H+ Speed? - AT&T - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Just wondering, what is the typical data H+ speed for AT&T? I just downloaded speedtest.net and my test result don't look promising. This is a unroot and still stock.
190kps for download, 434kbps for upload and 151ms for ping.

I usually get about 5mbps down and 1.5mbps up in Louisville KY on H+
Sent from my AT&T cellular device.

those speeds are extremely slow but speeds will vary depending on your area. You can't judge your phone based on someone else's speeds, unless they're in your same area.
The other thing to do is run a speedtest from your phone's browser:
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
Open that link and run the test. There are many people that had a problem with accuracy with the speedtest app.

Thanks everyone for the quick reply.
@ nyydynasty - I am in the Los Angeles, CA area. The reason I asked because everything seem to be real slow when it come to my data conection. My wifi connection at home (when I connected to it) is a lot faster connection in comparison. I am not trying to compare or guage the speed. The reason I asked is to see if I should call up AT&T and complaint at them to see why my connection seem slow.

My connection varies greatly. My speeds are either 1 meg a second or up to 5 when I'm in nyc. My connection can go down really quickly though, and I'll average like 300 kb a second.

Thanks, that should be enough for me to call AT&T to see if there is a problem or not.

Wow 1.2mbps d/l and .12 u/l. Still it is slow.

My average is 4 down (I get a 6 every now and then) and 1.5 up. Lte is already available in my area and I have seen a Skyrocket clock 30 down.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium

5-6 down tops, and I'm in Phoenix, so LTE's in my area. Have yet to see a person with an LTE AT&T phone though. On the other hand, I've seen a Droid Razr pull down ~15 with only 3 bars.

At my house it had better connection. 2.4 d/l and 0.5 u/l

With the link it's 3.7 and 0.88 from my house.

I usually get between 6-7.5 Down & 2-3 Up on My Galaxy Nexus using AT&T... Funny thing is i'm still using a European baseband..
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

in my area (MN) i get around 2-5 down, about 1 up. If you do decide to go with a custom ROM, give some different modems a try. Originally i'd rarely get over 1 down, then i decided to go through a few modems and saw some moderate improvements. Some say it makes no difference for them, but it definitely did for me.

Orange County Ca so your area should be closer to that. I live on the border of La and Orange County and the lowest i ever VHF et UNLESS i am bekng throttled is about 3-5Mbs download and as high as 7-10Mbs download being more normal.
EDIT: I think it helps tbat since i am rooted I have modified my build.prop fkr the faster speeds. Plus you can get more if you edit your apn settings (which I am not doing at this point with this pic)

Here in Ohio on my sgs2 I have had as good as 5-6 down and 2.3 up
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium

For me, it ranges from 1-11 down and ~1 up

On the speakeasy speedtest, It's said I've gotten up to 12mbps down at one point. Speedtest app usually never gets over 6-7

Thanks everyone for the inputs, that tells me that my speed suck in my area. (or I am being throttled, I hope not.)
And this is the first time I got the data line since I have been with AT&T. It's only been a few months.
I doubt that I will root this phone anytime soon, it's still on the 2 years contract (got 22 months to go).
@ ROckRatt - What APN setting did you use? May be I can add a new APN and try to use that to see if I get better connection.
I would love to get it up to at least 5 or 6 download and 2 upload.

First I would call att and make sure they switched you to the 4G plan, sounds like they still have you on the 3G plan. Here are the APN settings I usually use but I do not remember if you can make them or set them up without being rooted. Most all of us are also on the contract with att also. I got mine in October if I remember correctly, whatever the first week it came out. So read up about flashing roms and just make sure to also download the return to stock packages IN CASE you ever need to return it to complete stock without att ever even knowing it was rooted and rom'd. Yoj will even be happier once you learn how.

[Q] SGSII International version in US

SO I have an international SGSII and I now live in US. I can't get 3G or H+ with T-mobile. The only company I know of that would offer me that speed is at&t But they are sooo expensive!
Are here any alternatives to get the highspeed?
I found a company that's on same network as at&t but they aren't that much cheaper. Thanks for help!

I don't think there are any other carriers in the US that use the necessary frequencies for mobile high-speed other than AT&T and H2O, no.

Yup, this works; I've got this exact setup, and my bill is around $65 a month. That's for 450 anytime minutes (with rollover), 5000 night/weekend minutes (with rollover), unlimited mobile to any mobile minutes, unlimited text, and unlimited "non-smartphone" data.
From what I hear, you could even go on the GoPhone unlimited everything plan for $50 a month, and it works.
The ISGS2 doesn't support T-Mobile US' bands so you'll get 500K down using GRPS. GoPhone plan's double that to about 950K. If you want fake-4G, you'll have to go with a real AT&T plan. What you can do is sign up for a cheap minutes plan and add unlimited messaging with mobile-to-any-mobile calling ($20) and add the unlimited data for non-smartphones plan for $10. It's not too bad a price that way.

So what you guys mean is that if I get an at&t plan (whichever one) and puch in these apn settings I will get unlimited HSPA? Even if I get a prepaid plan? Do I have to get a data plan included or what?
This is exciting!
I'm not sure about the pre-paid plans but it definitely works for me on my family plan. You'll just have to try it out and report back!
By the way, I wouldn't tell at&t that you have a gs2, just tell them its an old unlocked flip phone you got off of eBay. You can even give them a fake imei #.

Yes, you'll have to get SOME kind of data plan. I think any data plan will do. I am using this very phone on the "unlimited data for non-smartphones" data plan just fine, and get pretty decent HSPA+ speeds - usually between 1.5 and 6 mbps down.
Think for a second, dude. If you don't get a data plan at all, when your phone tries to connect to the gateway, it will not get a connection.

Haha, chillax dude! I'm some kind of n00b so be gentle with me .
But I'll try this and report back as soon as I touch US soil again .
If you have an old at&t phone you can use that imei to give at&t or change a few #'s on your i9100 imei. At&t won't recognize the imei from your i9100 even if you do give them that #. I always give them a fake # just in case.
Yes, get whatever plan for calling you want, but tell them you want the unlimited data for non smart phones.

If you already have an AT&T SIM card that is at least 3g capable, you don't HAVE to tell them squat. I haven't told AT&T about any of my last 3 phones - an XT701, a Motorola Milestone, or this one. I just plugged my SIM card in, and away I went.

In this case, you sacrificed potentially higher speeds in the future (when LTE comes online in your market, if it hasn't already), for a cheaper unlimited plan.
Not saying I wouldn't have done the same (I totally would have - I've decided an average of 3mbps down on HSPA+ is PLENTY fast enough for my phone... it's a phone for crying out loud! So I'm staying on my non-smartphone plan), just pointing it out.
Where I live they have to pipe sunlight in, I won't have LTE for a long time. Where I work I get around 3 mbps down so that's plenty for me as well.

So, Im back in LA. The first thing I did was to go to AT&T store and buy myself a prepaid plan. $50, includes unlimited, talk, text and data for non-smartphones. Then I punched in the APN settings and now I have H+!
I did a speed test and the results were pretty decent:
PING: 156
DOWNLOAD: 3683kbps
UPLOAD: 733kbps
It's good enough, even though in Sweden we have sooo much better and faster... I did the speed test in Sweden and the numbers were doubled for D/U.
But I have another question. My roommate has an iPhone, and we tried to punch in the same APN (which by the way is soooo annoying and complicated....). But they never worked for him. Does anyone, for some reason, know if they work on iPhone 4s? And if yes how do I do it the "easy way"

No offense, but you'd be better off asking iPhone questions in an iPhone forum. There is not a very high percentage of i9100 users who also use iPhones... Not to say that there aren't any at all. I know they exist. Just saying.
Apn for iphone is different.

Maybe the APN setting doesn't work that well with gingerbread or something was wrong on my phone. But now it works just fine!
Thanks again!
So based off of reading this thread..
I have T-Mobile prepaid right now.
I will be receiving an i9100 sometime this week, and don't want to live with EDGE.
Can I sign up for a plan online, get unlimited data for non smartphones, get a cheapo free non smartphone, then just pop the sim into the i9100?
Or can I just get a GoPhone plan and pop the sim into the i9100?

I think either will work.
EDIT: FYI, I've got the unlimited data for non smartphones from back when I had a sony ericsson w810, and have gone through three other smartphones before this one just by popping my SIM card into the new phone. Just make sure the SIM card is at least 3g capable. They should all be at this point, but you never know if they're still giving out old SIM cards or not.

[Q] Slow data speed on AT&T

Hello all,
I just received my S yesterday and cut down my AT&T SIM to a MicroSIM
The phone recognized it immediately, but I had to enter in the APN settings by hand.
It connected to the network fine and I have an "H" icon, but the data speeds seem much slower than with my X10.
I ran a test with the Speed Test.net APP and get anywhere from 0.15 mb/s to 0.8 mb/s. On my X10 (same SIM, same plan) I'd consistantly get over 1.5 mb/s.
I am on the MediaNet data plan. Like a mentioned, my X10 worked fine and was much faster.
Any suggestions?

Thanks for confirming that I had that right.
I just checked AT&T's coverage map and I'm right on the edge of a new HSPA+ expansion, so I'm hoping it's a coincidence and they're in middle of transitioning.
This is mine.
Another one in a different location.
Incredibly slow speeds
I just got my microsim from ATT today and I've got abismal results.
168kbps down and 139 up.
Checked and rechecked the settings, but they're the same you all are using.
Not sure what's wrong here...
Any ideas?
$15 MediaNet plan or smartphone plan?
I have the smartphone plan and I only ran one test in one location. Results were 2.4 mbps download and 1.1 mbps upload.

We're in the same boat - this is driving me nuts!
I'm travelling for work today and I'm at the Houston airport and getting anywhere from 1.5 Mbps to 3.5 Mbps down and a ~380ms ping using the speedtest.net app.
I tried re-entering the settings that Augie suggested but they were exactly what I had before.
Maybe it would help to get a new SIM card from AT&T? I'm using the same 3G card that I got with my w810 walkman phone back around 2006.
Well you'regetting better results than me. I don't think it's the sim card as I just got a new one today.

I just got the phone, and configured an APN with just "phone" nothing else filled and got between 2.6 and 4.1 mpbs downloading and 1mbps uploading, so I don't think the problem is with the APN but your local network, antennas around.
I really like the look of the S but like the spec of the Ion. Don't know which one to get. Where and how much you guy pay for yours? I think best price I look was about $600.00 free shipping.
Well, I seem to be getting better speeds now (consistently over 3mbps). Like I mentioned, I'm traveling right now, so I don't know if it well be better when I get back home. I guess we'll see.

[Q] 502 Gateway error

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, lack of sleep. This morning I tried to access the web from my phone through 4g and recieved a 502 Bad Gateway error on any page I tried to load. I have no problems with that on wifi and I can still get my emails and use maps albeit a little slower than normal on 4g, but no web pages. it doesn't work on dolphin browser or the stock browser. No apps have been added since last night when I was using it. I've rebooted the device twice, no luck. Play store still works, so does the amazon store. Anyone else experience this issue? I don't really want to factory reset the device, but is my next stop.
Same problem for me, although seems to be other internet-connected apps too, such as foursquare and weatherbug giving errors having to do with bad connection.
WiFi on, everything works fine.
I called AT&T and said there is some data outage affecting all of the west US. My wife's iphone works fine, btw.
OP, what is your location? I am san diego.
Thanks for the info. I'm in Sacramento. Thank goodness it isn't just me. I tried to look something up and thought "WTF did I mess up in my sleep!"
I just tried setting my APN to wap.cingular, and it works, although now no LTE.
Name: AT&T
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
MMS protocol: WAP 2.0
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
APN type: default,supl,agps,fota,dun
for someone like me who doesn't have LTE in my area that solution will work well. I'll probably hold off on changing until I leave work to see if the system comes back, but if it doesn't now I have a solution.
Its back up in the bay area. The outage started last night around midnight. Called this morning and seems like they didn't know about it, only knew about LA ans San diego

[Q] LGOG on T-Mobile: Is LTE functional for you?

Well, after looking at all the Nexus 5 hoopla the past few hours (they have some damned nice cases available from Spigen for that thing, wish the LGOG would have sparked that kind of interest, oh well) I figured I'd ask this question so, the poll above pretty much covers it.
If LTE is working for you I'd appreciate knowing it, and the setup you have with it working. A few of us that have the LGOG and had working LTE which suddenly just up and died on us are trying to figure out exactly why it suddenly just up and died on us, perhaps some more info in a thread geared towards it specifically might help.
Thanks...
For the record: I'm running the stock 4.1.2 build with the stock AT&T JB radio currently, using a T-Mobile $30/month plan and the LTE functionality worked fine the first day or so I got the LGOG just by adding the APN for it (fast.t-mobile.com) - I didn't have to do anything else, didn't even have to change anything network related: when I originally got this LGOG about 2 weeks ago all I did was add that APN and LTE worked as noted by the 4G/LTE icon on the status bar. After a day or so of using it the icon changed to the standard 4G icon and the LTE functionality never returned and still hasn't.
The vast majority of tmous users don't get lte on e970. Check att lte freqs vs tmo freqs in your area.

As I said in the post above, it DID work when I first got the LGOG about two weeks ago, and here in Vegas T-Mobile very much has their actual LTE service enabled (as noted, Las Vegas was the first city in the US where they "flipped the switch" so we technically had it before anybody else did). There are a number of other owners that have had it working when they first started using the T-Mobile SIM cards, but over random periods of time the LTE functionality just stops working, kaput, clear out of the blue and then we just can't seem to get it functional again.
It's not a T-Mobile issue because their coverage here in downtown Vegas where I happen to live blankets the area completely and again it DID work just fine, with two different (yet same series) T-Mobile SIM cards, but then it just stops working and I/we would like to work on a solution as to why it did or does work then it suddenly stops.
I don't really care about actually using it in most situations, I just care that it should work since the LGOG covers the frequencies where T-Mobile provides LTE service, that it did work for myself and others, and then for some unknown reason it stops working and I/we can't figure out the specific reason(s) for it to just stop.
Have you tried these APN settings?
Name: MetroPCS LTE
APN: fast.metropcs.com
Proxy: blank
Port: blank
Username/Password: blank
Server: Not set
MMSC: http://metropcs.mmsmvno.com/mms/wapenc
MMS proxy: not set
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
Authentication Type: not set
APN type: default,mms,supl
APN protocol: ipv4
APN roaming protocol: ipv4
T- Mobile largely gained LTE in the Vegas area by acquiring MetroPCS. Their LTE is on the CDMA spectrum and T- Mobile is broadcasting on gsm. That might be part of your problem. TMO is probably relying on the MPCS equipment in Vegas.

Hadn't considered that, Jank4AU, but I did just try adding that APN info and still no success with LTE. As stated, it did work originally because within an hour of getting this LGOG I had installed Speedtest and ran some here where I live and I had varied results from 28 to 35-36 Mbps - since this phone is only capable of 21Mbps HSPA+, and not the 42Mbps aspect, and since it was clearly showing the 4G LTE icon on the status bar, I know it was working at least for a brief period of time and I know the hardware is capable of it.
It's funny in some respects because earlier when I tried that 4.4 AOSP that houstonn has created I noticed that the default APNs (whereas with the stock ROM I have no defaults at all) pulled from the SIM card are:
MetroPCS (fast.metropcs.com)
T-Mobile GPRS (no APN info set)
T-Mobile GPRS (fast.t-mobile.com)
Alas, no matter what I do it just won't enable LTE. When I bring up the available networks on the stock ROM (4.1.2) I get what's pictured as attached, so the phone most definitely can see the T-Mobile LTE network, but whenever I attempt to connect to it there will be a ~30 second delay with nothing happening, then it just reverts to HSPA.
This fiasco is baffling...

[Q] Anyone have LTE working on Cricket?

I have two SCH-I545, one on NC5 stock rooted, one on MDK running CM11 nightlies. I got a Cricket sim and service for a month to see if I could get everything going, and all but LTE is golden. If anyone has any help for me on getting LTE going, I would certainly appreciate it. I believe Cricket uses the AT&T LTE network around here, but I am unsure. The NC5 phone has a constant notification:
Phone activation
This SIM card is from an unknown source.

I believe there are ways around that.
Below are the APN settings from their website which I can confirm get up to HSPA+ and MMS working:
Name: Internet
APN: ndo
Proxy: Not Set
Port: Not Set
Username: Not Set
Password: Not Set
Server: Not Set
MMSC: http://mmsc.aiowireless.net
MMS Proxy: proxy.aiowireless.net
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 150
Authentication type: Not Set
APN type: default,mms,fota,hipri,supl

The only differences between the ones on their site and those successfully pushed to my MDK are the name and the pushed did not include "hipri," in the APN type. Both worked fine except for LTE.

It looks like all it takes is clearing data on the "Setup Wizard" app to get rid of the notification. I was hoping I could turn it off, but there may not be a need. Now all that remains is LTE.
Edit: I jumped the gun on that. The notification still comes up on reboot. Force stop gets rid of it, and probably freezing the "Setup Wizard" app (root required).
Any update on this?
Can LTE work on a Verizon S4?
What kind of speeds are you getting with HSPA+?
I am currently running Hyperdrive 18.1, would I have to flash back to NC5?
Thanks

+1 I currently have a cricket SIM and get up to HSPA+. Still looking for a way to get LTE.

I learned that on both straight talk and cricket, lte will not work on Verizon phone.
I have all three sims and have been testing in an att phone and a verizon phone.
The att phone gets lte logo with both cricket and straight talk.
The cricket line caps at about 8 mbps which is really not lte despite it saying that at the top of the phone.
Straight talk goes up to 27 mbps at the same location. verizon gets 80 down.
cricket must cap the lte speeds.
So bottom line, if you want real lte speeds either stick with Verizon or get an att phone or unlocked phone and try straight talk.

I am pretty sure that LTE on this phone uses different bands than Cricket uses. So physically the phone is incapable of LTE on the cricket network.
When I set my phone to "Global" or "LTE/CDMA" mode, I get the "4G" icon on top of the screen... BUT... i cannot send text messages. (can recieve them thought!)
Test messages only works for "GSM / UMTS" mode. At that point i get "H" or "H+" on top of the screen.
I think the phone is programmed to display "4G" just because it's in LTE mode regardless of what the actual connection is.
