[Q] Unlocking disables 4G? - Motorola Photon 4G

Hello everyone
Recently I unlocked my photon, and in the guide of the unlocking ther was an attention that the unlocking is very likely to disable the 4g connection ability of my photon. Could the unlocking be undone so that I will be able to use 4g? Currently none of the carriers in my country uses 4g, but they will start using it soon, and I don't know what to do. Will it one day be possible to unlock without losing the 4g? Will someone release a fix to the problem?
Please tell me!
Thank you!

What exactly was the purpose of you unlocking your phone?
Currently unlocking breaks 4G.
If you want to have your 4G back then you need to go back to stock.

4g on this phone is wimax, a dying breed. So unlocking your bootloader made the phone not work on the soon to be abandoned (2015?) Wimax network in the US. Most other carriers in other countries, including sprint now, are building out LTE 4g networks, which this phone wont work with.
If none of that made sense this will, you didn't break anything on your phone you'd ever be able to use.

Thanks for the response.
The purpose was to flash a good recovery and to flash other rom than the stock rom. But I didn't find a rom that I want to install.
Before unlocking, I tried to flash clockworkmod recovery with rom manager, but then when I tried to reboot into recovery, I got the error message fail to boot 2, so I searched in google and discovered that I can't flash a new recovery without unlocking, although I had rooted the device. I unlocked the bootloader and flashed clockworkmod, and then I was able to get into recovery.

Thank you Ksmith,
I hope that the people in my country are clever enough to start using the LTE and not the WiMax. Thank you very much for the information, I am suddenly relaxed.

I think he ment that the photons wont work on the lte network so you better hope for wimax if you plan on keeping phone for awile. Also i like the cm7.2 rom its seems to be the best for me `and just flashing any of the stock sbf files will give you back 4g. there also is a custom recovery for locked phones. bootsrtap and i the nanidroid. dont quote me on any of this except i do like cm7.2

Yeah I understood what he meant, I'm just not so sure I want to keep this smartphone for myself, so I still can prefer LTE
The SBF is hard to find right now. I tried to download it from 2 different websites and both of them don't work. However I hope to download this file soon.
Thank you good people for all the explanations!

i could probably email it to you as an attachment

Don't forget you can use CWM recovery via bootstrap if you are rooted without being unlocked. There are also roms you can flash via bootstrap while just being rooted and retain 4G. Just look in dev section.

WiMax is actually a good technology, just not the one that nearly all other carriers globally are using. On the plus side of that though, if nearly everyone uses LTE the chances of a "world phone" from any provider in 5 years are pretty good.

not sure the definition of "unlocking" but if you just want root that will not effect 4G

[Q] Please Assist With Galaxy Note!

My friend has an unlocked galaxy note, and i have a few questions as i am new to this phone, and am new to the whole carrier unlocked deal.
The phone is carrier unlocked and is running on t-mobile, i am afraid use odin to root the device because the files say the are made for the At&t version. The reason im afraid is because if i loose the carrier unlocked status with this at&t file i will be unable to get it back. (money issue) What i would like to know is if i use odin to flash certain files, and to root and install clockworkmod recovery, will i loose the carrier unlock, or mess anything else up in the process.
Also i have searched all over the forum to find out what the "flash counter" is, and have been unable to find out much information on it. Is there a certain number of flashes before it bricks the phone? I'm completely lost...
Can i flash modems, and radios, on the stock rom, because that is what my friends wants. Mainly the reason for doing this is so he can have faster data speeds on T-mobile's network.
Can someone kindly walk me through the process, as iv been doing research for the past couple days and am still totally lost, maybe even include links. Your help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Once unlocked, always unlocked.
The flash counter just counts the number of kernel flashes you do with Odin. Yes you can flash modems on the stock ROM.

Is a modem different from a radio, because I wanted to use the blaze radios to get better speeds? Can I us those on stock.

Tmobile SIM on NEW OTA UPDATE

I was all prepared to root and unlock my bootloader with pudding and CWmod and then I read that no one is having success with the bootloader unlock on the new update 45.4.13.MB855.Sprint.en.US aka 2.3.5. I also saw somewhere (be it wrong or right) that the new update let you use USA sim's in the phone. IDK what to belive. I need this phone to work on tmobile today If anyone has any insight on how to do this please let me know!
Have not heard that about US sims working.

So is there some sort of master code or some crap that sprint or motorola can provide to unlock a device on Domestic Carriers? or am i wasting breath arguing with them about the fact that the phone is capable of working on other domestic service they just arent allowing the software to do it? I mean i know the photon is capable of it it has the hardware. I just dont have the software is there any other way of getting this to work hacked rooted or otherwise and/or bone stock out of the box. Im game for anything here If someone has the beta stuff to test on the new update by all means ill take part.

I have not can you give me a link to the kddi radio zip please. and you just flash zip from sdcard correct. then what would happen after i put the sim in?
Uh craziest thing just occured!!!! I used the Torpedo root method using the adb shell. I then installed the bootstrap recovery console. I did a backup (thank google) and installed via bootstrap the v17 for locked of your 2.3.5 hybrid deblur (peetr_)....everything seemed to go according to plan. then i rebooted the device. It went into a boot loop at the M logo. finally i had no choice but to go into the motorola recovery console....i did a data reset there and it rebooted fine into YOUR ROM....except now I had no service whatsoever. OMG!!!!!! heart palpatations and sweaty palms ensued!!!!!!!!! oh no i bricked it aggghhhhh!!!!! BUT WAIT I can do an sbf via RSD to get it back from the dead RIGHT? RRRRRR!!!! WRONG ANSWER I had 2.3.5 the most current OTA out there isnt an sbf I've found for it......NOW WHAT WWWWWAAAAIIIIITTTTTT!!!!!! the bootstrap is an application that is coincedentily still on my memory chip!!!!! run bootstrap load up IT'S recovery console and thanks be to google there was my backup i had done at the beginning!!!!! SALVATION AT LAST!!!!!
Any ideas what just happened!???? Cause Im completely lost!!!!!
I have never known the photon to work on tmobile. Some guy on craigslist claimed to have one as soon as i said i want to meet to see he turned his phone off. Im sure if that was possible there would be a article on tmonews and engadget etc

I was going to do this but it doesnt work on the latest OTA so I tried the above and as of now no sucess maybe ill try again this weekend after more research and intel from the devs here hopefully
Side note: Do the captchas have to be put in on every reply this is gonna get old quick!!!
it will work on tmobile (see this thread). The only problem is that most tmobile locations dont have 3G available on 1900mhz, so the photon will only work at 2G. Tmobile is making changes on their network (to be more iphone friendly), and hopes to have their entire network able to do 3G on 1900mhz within a yr.
As part of the company’s previously announced $4 billion network modernization effort, T-Mobile plans to launch 4G HSPA+ service in the 1900 MHz band in a large number of markets by the end of the year

I purchased my Photon a month and a half back: secondhand from the craiglist ad. for 170 USD in Tampa.
I immideately unlocked and rooted it and flashed KDDI radio since it was only tmobile pay as you go SIM I used for my short vist to US.
It did work on T-Mobile when I was to US: thanks to KDDI Radio - needless to say it was and still is 2.3.4 and I'm stick to it.

You only flashed my rom? I am not sure, how to activate carrier service on cdma. Maybe some *228? Do you have a sim card? Did you try to flash that kddi radio?
Btw I am glad, that you can read and did not try to flash any older sbf.
it is possible I did a bunch of them for people on craigslist in NYC and Philadelphia. I dont think they had the new OTA though. I have yet to get one with the new OTA.

Yes i only flashed your rom it looked and ran really nice except my Glitch I ran into with signal. I tried a series of those combos in the dialer nothing did anything for me.......I dont have the sim in front of me as of yet i will be attempting it this weekend.........I didnt try to flash the radio.
Are you saying i should just simply try leaving the stock root on and flashing just the KDDI radio from here through bootstrap and see if that will do the trick?
I try to make sure i collect all the data i can before attempting something and I have never personally used rsd to flash so i did some research....im glad i discovered that too!
Yes. I think you can try it and if you won't have any signal or want to go back to cdma, you can just flash 2.3.5sv2 254_12 radio.
But still be ready for the worst!

how to flash roms? Little Confused

I got Motorola Photon 4G with Android 2.3.4. Already rooted it and install Bootstrap.apk. I want to flash roms but I don't want to unlock bootloader so I can keep my 4G. So i dont need to flash SBF files thingy? And do i need to do Nandroid too? Also what are the some stable roms with working 4G? I heard about Rocko Locked and MOF 2.3.5ish Locked? Is both roms good? If you have any tips, please do tell me

No, there is no SBFing required if you don't want to unlock. If youve got bootstrap recovery installed (it doesnt come in an apk so im not sure what you mean) and can boot into it you can start flashing locked roms. The only one that you can flash that is still in development is Mof's rom, though. But it is a good upgrade from stock and everything works swimmingly. To flash it, just download the zip, throw it on your SD card, boot up into bootstrap recovery and flash the zip. No need to wipe anything, the installation will do it automatically.

Hey there mate. Once i had first purchased my photon, cm9 wasnt out as far as i remember, or maybe it was, but it was in really unstable alpha's, but anyways, off topic. Have you read around the developers section yet? As you go through and get farther into the pages, you'll see less of cm10, cm9, and you will see stuff like homebase rom, alien rom, yada yada. As for all of the older roms that dont require you have an unlocked bootloader, i recommend you use rocko. It offers great speed, stability, and it doesnt look half bad. I dont really know where to start as far as helping you in terms of explaining all of the flashing process, but i will point you in the right direction.
When i first began flashing roms these 2 threads became my best friend;
This one covers about it all
This one is even quite educational
For visual aid, qbking helped me just to assure i followed steps correctly with his line of tutorial videos (he also reviewed some roms if you are curious)
I hope those links at least get you pointed in the right direction. It seems like an aweful lot to take in, but, its organised allowing for quick navigation and in reality, you only really have to skim through it.
If you have any questions, feel free to reply and il get back to you when im available, best of luck flashing, and enjoy your photon! :good:

unlock the bootloader and use a custom recovery. bootstrap isn't a true recovery and should only be used if you can't unlock the bootloader.
so i'd go with the custom recovery that way you'll never have to flash an sbf to repair the phone if it gets messed up from flashing locked roms.

[Q] Root Note 1 to work with Wind/Mobilicity

I just got a Note 1 i717, currently locked to Rogers (I live in Canada), spent some hours to read about rooting Note 1 to work with Wind/Mobilicity, I'm new, Can you guys please tell me all I have to do is rooting the Note 1 to make it works with Wind/Mobilicity? do I have to have an Sim-unlocked Note 1 to start rooting?
I find this method is quite easy and safe, probably the best method to root Note 1, another question is can I update or install another rom after rooting and it still works with Wind/Mobilicity?

In order to use a carrier locked device on a different carrier, you have to remove the SIM lock. There's lots of ways to obtain the lock code. Usually calling the carrier is fast and cheapest. Or you can Google search for how to remove it.
Rooting is totally different then unlocking. Rooting doesn't affect what carrier your device will work on. Roms don't affect this either unless the rom installs a modem. Modems are what allow you to connect to different carriers. I'm unfamiliar with what modems work on wind/mobilicity but I remember reading a post on it here once. You'll have to search for it.

I am using a bell note with mobilicity. You need tp unlock your phone in order to use with mobilicity.
For rooting, i flashed twrp recovery using odin v1.85. Once, you have twrp recovery, you can flash superuser.i used superuser v94. You can get twrp recovery from goomanager too. Once you are rooted. You need to flash modem. There are many modems available. You just have to find right one for you.

thanks, this is quite helpful
You don't need root access to flash any modem or rom.
You need to unlock from carrier to use other carriers sim card. This can be done by ourchasing a code from ebay.
You will need to flash a modem that will let you access the frequencies\bands wind uses.
Don't quote, reply. If you quote, edit.
No Honestly lets chit chat about it what is a good modem for mobilicity because I havn't seen one yet that doesn't drop and require reboots 10 min+ wait while it rediscovers all the various band connections. I want to know if anyone has a good experience with AWS 1700 + 2100 on the note since gingerbread/ics (a little). I am thinking of giving it up because I use mobilicity / and wind in the past and it really isn't a functioning phone anymore because of the magivered modem from times long ago. All the new radios don't work because they havn't been modded to get the other bands ...
So good luck, but I think it is more a toy now than a phone.
Also I would like to point out that all the work that was done a year back was great and thanks to everyone involved.

so which rom you are using to make this work with Wind/Mobilicity? I already rooted and have recovery rom, but i dont know which rom to install. I have tried T-mobile rom but it did not work.
Would you like to share more detail how you managed to get it to work
What rom have you used, I m getting no signal at this point and lost IMEI number

I'm just guessing this is a case of autocorrect, and you mean "custom ROM" and not "art room"?
How did the custom ROM get on your phone, did you buy it that way or did someone do it for you?
The update won't install with a custom ROM, its true (at least if any system files have been altered, which is usually the case). Also, it won't install with a custom recovery. Might even send you into a bootloop and render the phone unusable.
If you want to return to a stock condition and get the update, you can either read up and learn, or run the RUU to return to stock (bootloader must be locked or you need S-off). In either case, we can help you, but need specifics on how you want to approach it.

oh the lousy autocorrect got me.
I have no idea what im doing lol, im following a tut to install revolution hd rom and so far everything is working perfect lets see what happens after system reboot.
Can I unroot and relock bootloader after custom rom install done ?
Update: restoring old content phone seems faster with better signal, but before custom rom it had 4g signal now seems only 3g
Now that sucks boomsound enable/disbale in settings is gone!
So is extreme power saving gone from status bar
also 4g signal
Signal will not show 4g or 4glte like AT&T [email protected] [email protected]
You could relock and unroot, but then no reason to flash a custom rom.
Those two settings are in settings. And on the m8 443 euro builds some are reporting lesser [email protected]
There are AT&T ROM's available that are tailored to us AT&T/GSM networks

This is the exact reason I highly discourage following step-by-step tutorials; and/or using toolkits. You are modding the phone with apparently very little understanding of what you are actually doing. Not only is this very risky, as it might result in damage to you phone. But it also leaves you completely unequipped to handle any problems.
My suggestion is to spend a few hours reading the basic information that the folks here have taken the time to compile. This isn't "techie" stuff, this is the basic information and concepts that should be understood before doing any modding of the phone. Quite simply IMO if you don't understand the basics, you have no business rooting/modding the phone.

Again, you need to learn and research more before doing anything. This is another perfect example. Factory reset doesn't do anything to the ROM. All it does is wipe the user data partition, and isn't going to help your case in any way. And trying to make up your own solutions is not a good idea (but at least you thought to ask before trying it).
If the intent is to simply be on the latest 2.23 stock software, just run the RUU. You will need to relock the bootloader before RUU if you are s-on. Also, back up any personal data, as user data will be wiped by RUU.

Not enough info. What exactly does the error say?
S-on or S-off. Did you relock the bootloader?
Any response if you type (using adb):
adb devices
Improper HTC/ADB drivers or using Microsoft USB 3.0 drivers on USB 3 port on Windows 8.x instead of Intel USB drivers would be my first two guess. The ladder of the two issues would be most likely scenario if RUU communicates with device while booted into Android OS but fails to connect when the device is in fastboot/boot loader mode.
