I've never dropped the tablet but I can't say the same when women handle it (No offense ladies, if ever)
I wouldn't mind if the sides got dented, but that 1" of deep scratch shattered my heart to pieces. So question is, I thought the glass was GorillaGlass, dafuq samsung? I've had a 3Gs for almost a year or more, and there isn't a single dent/scratch on that screen despite the heavy usage on it, same with my 8 month old Galaxy S.
They say it's Gorilla Glass, but what's that really mean?
Just wondering if she wears any rings, such as diamonds? Maybe it got dragged across the screen. Just a thought or do you know what caused it already?
Really sorry to hear, cause I would be going nuts about it. Not at her per say, but just having that scratch would make me nuts.
Just another quick thought. If it was for her to get used to, I would ask for hers before she scratches it. Surely have yours convinced her she can't live without her own.

It's gorrilla glass, but unfortunately, it's made of glass, not gorrillas. But yes, it's the same stuff as used in lots of consumer electronics. Ask Du Pont if you want more info. Scratch resistant, not scratch proof...

Yes, it's gorilla glass. Yes, it's resistant to scratches. No, it's not immune to them. It WILL get scratched if you chop your vegetables on it, it will get broken if you drop it from 2 meters, it will look like Swiss cheese if you shot at it with a minigun.
On a more realistic note, it can also get scratched by diamond rings, by putting it on the floor/table face-down, by pulling it in and out of a tight case if some sand somehow gets in the case, ...
Lending my device to other people is why I always have it in a case and why I have a screen protector on it.
If you're sure your sister is the one who made the scratch, and she is buying her own one, I'd ask her to trade the devices or something.
There are also some products around that claim they can remove scratches, but I don't have any experience with them.
Putting a screen protector on might just change the flow of light in a way that'll hide the scratch, but it can also do it in a way that'll make it even more visible/annoying. I'd love to put on a screen protector but it kinda kills the whole idea of "Gorilla Glass" I don't know if you watched the initial release before the 2G iPhone came out and they kept talking about how Gorilla Glass was one of the best inventions and so the praise went on, the had some live demo's and it was amazing (2 years ago). I don't really know if the glass on the tablet is not thick enough? or it's just a really thin glass pane? Yes, I've watched a lot of stuff about gorilla glass, but I've also done some live testing at my university (we got a batch of pieces to compare it to normal glass). I even have the specific results somewhere ...
All in all yes, it's a great improvement. It is seriously resistant to scratches, it's much much (and I mean MUCH) harder to break, but still, it isn't perfect.
I wouldn't say your bulletproof vest - tank example is completely appropriate here, since a bullet shot at a tank wouldn't compromise the tanks usability (at least not mostly, there are some extreme cases when it might, but let's leave that stuff to Hollywood) - but a scratch on the screen of a tablet definitely would. And a screen protector does help against scratches from diamond rings.
I have an Ultra Crystal SGP and I haven't noticed the screen responsiveness to lower. The only thing that is bad about it is that it gets dirtier faster and seems to reflect light a bit more. I also don't have to press any harder then I had to without the protector, as soon as I touch it (actually a little bit before ) the touch is recognised. If you feel your screen responsiveness diminishes, you can also applications to raise the "touchscreen sensitivity".

Disagree, Mate, I have a Zagg protector and a case as well. For the expense of a 32GB 10.1, I'm not about to risk damage. Other poster is right: it is made of glass afterall not gorillas.
Also, like another thing best kept covered; there's very little loss of sensitivity when its covered.

Im usually not a fan of screen protectors on my phones but when i bought my tab at best buy they had the zagg invisibleshield for $15. It wasnt easy to put on and it looked pretty bad at first but once it dried out It pretty much disappeared. I dont even notice it anymore. A 10" screen is bound to get scratched up. Im glad i did it.
I got a scratch on my screen, and It had to be a scratch because I couldn't wipe it off even with a few different cleaners.
A few months later - the scratch is gone!!!

Having a screen protector does defeat the purpose of the gorilla glass. However, I would rather have that extra measure of protection and just replace the screen protector every few months.

Used to have an invisibleSheild on an older phone but I hated the feel of the thing. Feels rubery, very unpleaseant!
I don't know for other brands but I'd realy go for something that repels the finger prints... I always have to clean the thing :|

I was about to say that, as good as it protects, it's more like a condom on the phone, a dry one.
What ticks me off about it is when you sweat through your jeans the whole screen becomes a mess and the phone (The one I had it on) could barely read my touch.

Corning put out a press release last year stating that they'd picked up Samsung as a customer for Gorilla Glass® for their touch screen phones. All the Galaxy S series phones have Gorilla Glass®. Even the craptastic Behold II had it. The story is the same for basically all Motorola phones too, though I'm not sure about HTC (at least I've not seen anything official).

Granted if you look at Corning's device list the Galaxy S series phones are not listed, but you can also notice the list itself is obviously fairly old.
Corning has the contract for Samsung, this much we know.

However, some on here have stated they received minor scratches, but none of those posts indicated WHAT they did to their phone that would cause a scratch.... the videos on youtube could make you cry though and only the box cutter caused scratches from what I could tell.

You should check out a thread in the Vibrant accessories thread on XDA, multiple pages about screen protectors. I just installed my invisibleshield and after trying it out will put an update in that thread. Some people say the invisibleshield makes swyping hard. The others recommended are Clearfreak and Reallook, although the latter seems to be what people are swaying towards now.

I also use zagg. Works great for me, but I've been a zagg fan for a while. Isn't hard to swype for ne.
^^^ is that list outdated or something? I would assume ours, and the droid X have gorilla.
^ Zagg is a personal preference... I for one ripped it off my phone is disgust, felt way way too rubbery (hard to swype)

My phone was sitting on a wooden bench, and as we all know this phone is crazy slippery. On its own, it slid off the bench into the dirt below (about a 3ft drop). I now have what I would call a chip on the screen, not a scratch. So if we do have gorilla glass, it doesn't do ****. Imma order a screen protector on payday. Also it may be my imagination but I'm pretty sure the chip is getting bigger. I'm sure I'm just tripping balls though.

I highly doubt that this phone has gorilla glass. I put it in my pocket a couple times with the included earbuds and got a couple scratches as a result, one of which is visible when the screen is in use.

The glass isn't necessarily the top surface. From what I was reading about the stuff they often use other layers. That means if we do have gorilla glass the screen may still scratch, it will just be harder to break.
i think that list is out dated because it doesn't say anything about the dell streak and that defo got the gorilla glass
Crazy to hear people saying EAR BUDS are causing scratches.... that is NOT what I viewed when I saw an Asian dude ripping a screw into the screen with no scratches.

Firstly, a warm greeting to the xda community for all your wonderful contributions to the push for education about these amazing devices we've come to know as smart phones. Truly learned so much through this site. However, I came to this page not eagerly seeking new info on the latest phone or newfound wisdom on my own, but heartbroken. At only four days old, the beauty of my newly purchased Vibrant has been marred by a small but deep scratch in the middle of the amoled. The means by which the scratch came about are, well, surprising to me even still. Was using the phone night before last, pinched in to zoom on a link while browsing the net. Apparently I had a bit of a hangnail on my thumb which literally dug in and carved out a scratch in the screen in front of my eyes. Now, I've perused this site and others thoroughly looking for a solution & am well aware of the flag-wavers for Corner and their gorilla glass technology. I'm not here to start a war or debase the company, simply looking for a viable solution to a problem which has really impaired use of this new phone outside of replacing the entire screen, something I cannot afford. lol a hangnail scratched it? sounds crazy. anyways i read somewhere that it can be polished out. not sure how true that is.
If you have access to a dremel you might be able to polish it out using some sort of scratch remover. You may have to do some digging but a while back another member on here wrote a very detailed thread on removing a scratch. Good luck.
Damn man.. a buddy I work with and I have literally tried to scratch it with keys.. even a friggin razorblade, NO JOKE! A hangnail.. you must be kidding, right? If you aren't, and you bought it legit, make sure it is under warranty and break it in a way that should work. I would be able to break mine happily if a razorblade didn't scratch it, but a hangnail did, lol!
But seriously, this is the first phone I don't have a screenprotector on, and I leave it in my pocket with things that should have tore it up, yet it is still as new looking as the day I got it. Hell, you may be able to return it just because that sounds like a defect.

Once I thought I had messed my screen up pretty bad. I saw several light "scratches" and tryed to rub them out thinking maybe they were streaks. Nothing worked, until I put a Zeiss Lens Cleaning Wipe to it and they came right out.
I don't use screen protectors, I use my phone every day, it's scratch free. I'm also a guitar player with long nails... just sayin.

Can understand why you'd assume I'm making some obvious misconception. Sadly, no, there was no screen protector on. The scratch is deep, the pixels inside it are reflected, giving a distracting warped look to them against any solid color other than black & it can be felt when running your finger across the screen. Though it seems unlikely, I saw it happen. If anything, hope this thread is another supporting opinion towards putting a screen protector on your phone asap. Gorilla Glass is Not impervious, my phone is physical proof. Thank very much for the suggestions and link, after further research it appears that a dremel, quality glass polish & some elbow grease is the only option I have. Hoping it works!

There was a thread somewhere with pics of someone polishing and repairing their scarted screen, it looked scarry. Don't even attempt it.
I have heard of using toothpaste and non abrasive cloth may work. I have lots of scratches on my camera lens, which is worse.
I also have scratches all over the screen (bought mine used on Craigs). This may sound stupid, but I put a screen protector on, and the scratches are harder to see.
Side note - most people with screen protectors on put up with much worse visibility as the protector gets used more. Most of the discomfort with the scratch is mental. Put on a protector and put in your mind it's the protector scratched up, and you will feel better. I know this from experience with the same phone.

Do NOT use toothpaste on your screen. It will only cause more MICRO scratches which will annoy the heck out of you outside in the sun or in bright lighting.
Trust me, I tried that. (But I got a replacement due to a malfunctioning earpiece.)

I agree with jamesd, it is like a windshield on a car, it will not shatter. Also, Gorilla glass is not indestructible, just much harder to scratch and break. go look at the website!

You mean just for cost reasons? Its not indestructible, but theres no doubt its better than regular glass.
Cant be scrached doesnt mean it cant be shattered. It all depends on the material's physical property. Nexus s would be ur best bet for t mobile or vibrant 4g

If Samsung used a thinner layer either because of expense or to keep the device thinner, it may explain why these screens tend to shatter pretty easily. I will say that I've had my phone for 6 months, have never used a screen protector, and don't have a single scratch anywhere on the screen.

the problem is that i not live in us, and this phone doesnt have support by samsung here, so i will have to buy the lcd+digitizer and fix it myself, ending in about 130 usd

Dude get the nexus s, roms and over clocks are gonna be sick. plus they curved the screen a bit, so if it falls, the edges of the phone hit the floor instead of the screen.
Gorilla glass is scratch proof but not more resistant the breakage. And the fact that the glass is end to end, an impact on the side can travel to the side of the glass, where its most susceptible to breaking into pieces, like it happened to you...
I did throw my phone twice on the wall out of anger, didn't happen to my phone luckily... Ur drop must be a peculiar type directly at the weakest point... Silicon cases, ur best bet next time... I had one on when I threw the phone...

Dude, Gorilla glass is a mix-design that makes the glass surface very hard and the material 3 times more flexible than normal glass........BUT.... it still is glass and if you drop any glass and it hits just right .....the glass breaks. Since this type of glass is also a tempered variety when it breaks it shatters.
Me ? I have dropped my phone from 10 feet and nothing so, I ll chalk it up to you being lucky........or unlucky I should say............

I did throw my phone twice on the wall out of anger, didn't happen to my phone luckily... Ur drop must be a peculiar type directly at the weakest point... Silicon cases, ur best bet next time... I had one on when I threw the phone...

You threw you vibrant not one but two times on the wall and still it survived while this guy only dropped it once and always kept it safe yet had it shatter to pieces with the first unfortunate accident.

You know.. I gotta say, I absolutely love the build quality on this thing.. I was worried about not having a case for it at first..
But, my girlfriend accidentally dropped it like christmas even and that is the only scratch on the thing.. it is a small nearly unable to be noticed scratch on the very bottom right side. And that was onto a brick fireplace by total fluke. (She didn't realize the box wasn't sealed shut and it somehow popped out.)
After having this thing nearly a month, it being in my backpack a few times, my pocket and other places..
I see no scratches dings or anything.. which is pretty impressive. While I have taken pretty darn good care of it.. normally by now you will have something on any given piece of electronic.
Are the HTC phones this good? I'd honestly consider settling for lower specs in the future as long as the build quality was this good... Naturally I have and would use a screen protector but, I must say I am very happy with the current no scratch goodness of my tablet.
Yes, they are built well. I did drop mine from about 3-4 feet and it hit a corner in a case on a hard floor and the LCD went bad. I replaced it and all is well.
I dropped mine down a crack on a sleeper sofa and it put a nice gouge on the side of the tablet, but otherwise it's pretty good. Got a little nick on the screen as well. But otherwise, it certainly feels like a premium device.
Dropped mine screen first on a parking lot. Only a corner was scratched.
HTC is the best. I can't believe the majority of people think Iphones in the same league. You can't even mount it as a flash drive for christ sakes, you have to go through Itunes, after you have to update it every week or it doesn't work lol.
I'll probably get thrown off the forums for admitting this, but I'm an iPhone / Mac user and the View has really impressed me in terms of build quality. HTC's software "improvements", on the other hand... :/

All of these products are designed to enhance our lives in ways ranging from fun to productivity.
While we may disagree on preferences or reasons to use certain products, none are really more or less valid than anyone elses.
I don't deny personally having a strong dislike of Apple products, but they are gadgets not a religion.

cautiously dropped this baby onto my bed...still 100% functional.

you should still get the screen protector as its screen is not a gorilla glass.....more so if you are using pen a lot.....you will get the scratch sooner than later bro! and there are quite a few clear screen protectors around, so grab one!

Absolutely get a screen protector. They also help reduce glare (if you go with a matte one) which is a real problem with this tablet if you like to watch movies.
I had a screen protector on my Nook Color also, and just before I sold it I put a deep gouge into it by pushing too hard on a cheap capacitive pen. Thanks to my screen protector I was able to sell the Nook with a clean screen, rather than one with a deep gash.
I have a screen protector, but no case on my Flyer. The powder coat aluminum casing seems really durable, and I've been really impressed with it. I've owned it since June I think. I can't seen any scratching on it, despite being laid on tables constantly.
My Desire Z phone has a brushed aluminum battery cover on back, which has a lot of superficial scratches. But the soft touch plastic around it does not show scratches. Every HTC phone is a bit different (a few too many different design, some might say). But in general, they have the highest quality casing design in the business, IMO.

Yeah, I can't count how many times I've set my tab on a table and I feel something scraping the bottom that I didn't see when I looked at the table..
Scared the crap out of me the first few times.. I am quite pleased to have no scratches from it yet.
also, I have a screen protector on my flyer.. Found a cheapo zagg at bestbuy.
Tottaly agree. I really like the build quality of the HTC Flyer. The HTC Flyer is my first permanet tablet. I started with a Samsung 8.9 but it went back to the store.
It's only been a month since I bought my S3. I have 5-6 very tiny scratches on my screen which are easily visible in bright light. :crying:
It's like a group of scratches at the bottom center of my screen. I am still trying to figure out how I got them. I can assure you that I am not responsible for these scratches. :crying:
I have treated my phone with respect and yet it has developed these scratches. I have never dropped my phone. I have never kept it face-down on any surface.
The funny part is that the back cover on the Samsung Galaxy S3 sucks as well. Its got tiny scratches all over even though I have never ever kept the phone on any surface without keeping a micro-fiber cloth under the phone!
The only possible explanation for the scratches can be dust. Can I claim warranty on the phone since the screen is supposed to be scratch resistant?
I am super sad now
A few fine sand particles against the glass in a pocket will do more than two sets of keys.

Normal glass won't even scratch if you take a key to it. Sand particles are what gets you.

If you can't put a screen protector on a $700 phone then you should reconsider the decision of owning a smartphone.

I am not allergic to either. The problem is that I ordered the TRIDEA ALIKE case on 8th June from ebay but there were some manufacturing problems and the case delivery got delayed. It should be here in a weeks time. There are no decent screen protectors available in the local market. The ones that are available on ebay will take 2 weeks to be delivered to my country. With the case still not delivered, I am still contemplating about ordering a screen protector online or waiting for it to hit the stores.

No one in their right senses would think of not putting a screen protector on a costly phone. Like I said, I was waiting for some screen protectors to hit the local markets since I already had a bad experience with shopping for a case online. I ordered it a month back and it's still not here.
I heard that the Galaxy s3 comes with an additional coating that repels oil. Could it be possible that I have only scratched this coating and not the actual glass. If yes, how can I tell the difference?

Speak for yourself sunshine. My senses are where they should be, and I never have nor never will use a screen protector.
As posted elsewhere, got my first scratch last week, sand was the culprit, my fault though. Doesn't worry me. Sure I'll get a few more. Such is life.

What makes you think I am stupid? I have had 2 phones with gorilla glass before I got my s3 and none of them got a single scratch on them ever. I started using a screen protector when my phones were a couple of months old since its human nature to not care much about old things.
I was waiting for a good screen protector to be available in the local stores because I only just got the phone and thought It was okay to wait for sometime before I get a screen protector. I had no idea the S3 screen was going to be this delicate.

If I was in your situation, I would not use the phone untill I get screen guard.
Every screen gets scratches even if its scratch resistance.
IF YOU LIKE MY WORK, THANK ME BY THE BUTTON BELOW
Scratches don't affect the functionality of the device. Suck it up.
Also, scratch resistant not scratch PROOF.

What screen protector do you recommend. Something that I can get quickly and has good quality. I know SGP makes the best ones but are they available in India. Ordering online means having to wait a very long time for the shipping! ;(

1 SGS1, unscratched. 3 SGS2s, one with small scratch on screen and many chips in bezel, one with totally smashed screen (tram ran over it), one unscratched. 1 SGS3, tiny scratch on screen. 1 Lumia 800, unscratched (unused, to tell the truth).
I can barely see the scratch on the SGS3, it's ca. 3mm long, upper right of screen. And as said, since it was my fault for taking it to a beach, that's even less reason to beat myself up about it.
Screenguards seem to be the way forward for you. I just don't care enough - phone's for using, and I can't be bothered with the hassle of "babysitting" it instead of using it.

That makes sense. I hate the fact that I have to treat my phone like a living thing. I am only going to do this to get a good resale value on my phone when I decide to upgrade just like i did with my older phones.
Anyway, does anyone have the answer to my question. How can i tell whether i scratched the screen or the coating!

Going on 3 weeks with my S3 and no scratches at all, anywhere. No screen protector or case, have never really liked them. Phone spends the whole day in my pocket or screen side down on my bed side at night and is holding up quite well for now :fingers-crossed:

I agree. I hate screen protectors and it killed me to spend $13 for the Rearth case for this phone lol

In fairness, mine hasn't lasted the last 3 days on the beach.. It was hidden in my bag but sand gets everywhere. A few small scratches, but so be it my phone is staying naked.
