[Q] Should I take this trade? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I currently have a Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket with AT&T. I also have an Acer Iconia A500 10" tablet. Both are rooted running custom ROMS. The tablet is actually running a leaked ICS. I have been proposed this offer. A guy has an upgrade available. He wants to buy me a brand new white galaxy note in exchange for these two devices.
If it were you would you accept the trade?

No. LOL he should give you cash, you can decide how much depending on condition of your phone and tablet. Wait a few and watch Note's price drop.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium

Skyrocket eBay average sold* price for used phone in perfect condition: $400.00
Iconia A500 eBay average sold* price for used tablet in perfect condition: $300.00
SOURCE.
That is $700 and for that you can get a brand new I7000. That guy would only have to spend $300 on a white note and take a $400 profit off you.
*"Average sold" means the average price for that specific item that actually SOLD. Not the price they are listed for sale.

But you cant calculate it at 300 he is also giving up his upgrade. You have to look at the average sale price of the Galaxy note and its close to 700.

I did actually consider selling both the items and turning around and buying one myself but then I go through the hassle and time of selling them, hoping that I get enough out of them. I also go without a phone in between the time the skyrocket sells and I get the note because it is my only phone.
I am not eligible for an upgrade at the moment so I would pay that $700 price tag. Yes, he may only pay $300 but he wins by getting both devices and saving some money on the purchase and I win by getting the note without the trouble of having to sell both devices and hoping I get enough.
The question I come down to is if the Note is a good enough phone to ditch the skyrocket whose only advantage over the note is that it has NFC and the tablet, which I hardly use because I have a laptop and an iPad, for the note that has the larger screen.
The main things I use my phone for are as a GPS navigator, a web browser, and a camera. The larger screen would seem to be better suited for all of that. I would hope that posting this in the Galaxy Note section you would have some insight as to the performance of the device as well as the customization available (ROMs, Kernels, etc). I've owned the devices I'm giving up, I haven't owned the Note. Just looking for pros and cons and personal opinions. No need for comments like "He's ripping you off" or what not. Just explain why you think he is.
Thanks guys!

I would take the trade. Trying to sell stuff on craigslist or eBay is such a pain. But that is me and I was desperate for the note. I had my skyrocket + $200 cash on my end on craigslist looking for a trade. So if you are impatient and don't mind taking a little hit go for it. The note is an amazing device. I also have an iconia and I have not used it in a week.
However if you are asking here that would indicate some trepidation on your behalf. Trust your gut.

I would take the trade + $50-$100 cash back from the guy who has the Galaxy Note

if it were me....i would not do it.
he is winning either way you look at it. the Rocket is a great device in its own right......plus a tablet?
sell one or both and see where it leaves you. at&t has the note 649 right. if anything trade the rocket to him plus a little cash and keep the tab or vise versa
thats my OP

700? There's one in marketplace right now for 550 shipped. They're going to be on the market for about that much for awhile..your choice ...easy deal for trade or sell your devices for what they're worth and pocket 150.

I came from the Skyrocket and dont regret it at all. Probably biggest decision is how much will you miss a full tablet. I would say he is making out a little ahead and may be able to talk him into 50 dollars or so but if its what you really want its worth it IMHO.

He still has an iPad, and from what he says he uses his devices for, the iPad more than fulfills the 'full tablet' requirement. No, it isn't an android tablet, but the iPad still surfs the web well, apart from flash.

i would tell him the skyrocket or the acer iconia and $100 for his Galaxy note - if he says no then tell him to go F** himself.
Good luck

I more or less did this exact thing, since I wasn't eligible for an upgrade on the Note. I sold my SR and a Toshiba Thrive on ebay for about $680. But then you take into account Ebay fees and then Paypal fees and you're out almost $100. So the offer is not terrible really, if you wanted a Note anyways.
My Samsung Galaxy Noteā„¢ is smarter than your Honor Student.

Too much driving from Florida.
I wasn't serious anyway. You'll end up losing out on the deal if you trade with the guy. Try to sell them separately and you'll come out even. The Skyrocket should get you $300 on Craigslist easy. That alone should be enough to pick up the Note from him and you get to keep the rocket and the tab

I assumed as much Just figured I'd call your bluff.
After looking around craigslist and ebay I could probably break even with enough money to buy the note but then I go through the hassle of selling them and then being without a phone if the phone happens to sell before the tablet and I don't have the money for the note yet.
It basically comes down to whether or not I really want the note. I've been to AT&T twice to play with it and like the phone but that one wasn't rooted, OCed, or running a custom ROM. I know it has to be faster than the one they have on the floor.
So far I've seen comments that people have switched from the skyrocket to the note and don't regret it. I'd be curious if there is anyone who does?

I had two skyrockets with in a two week period and both developed problems and were returned to AT&T, I told them to keep the skyrocket and I would pay the difference for the white note and I think that the Note is a much better phone than the skyrocket!!! It is a great phone and a even better tablet, I have not touched mt Galaxy tab since I got my note.

I have a deal pending on my SR for $350 shipped and the Iconia 16gb A500 will probably get you $250 so that's $600 from you. If you pay the paypal fee and shipping like I am, I'm only really getting about $310 for the SR. A NIB Note is getting about $550 so it's really more a question of...Do you feel like you are losing out or getting what you want? I have the Transformer Prime running CM9 with a case and I hardly use it. My phone is what I spend most of my time on.

Returned My Skyrocket, I'm Back :D

After having the skyrocket for one day, I decided to go back to the original Galaxy S2. My reason? I saw a post on there that the OG GS2 was only $99 at Target. I couldn't justify the $150 extra price for a bigger screen and LTE option that isn't even in my area.
So I went to Best Buy and did a exchange/price swap for the OG GS2. The guy at Best Buy mobile offered me to keep my Skyrocket and give me $100 back. But instead I decided to get the OG GS2 and got instead $150 back. He said if I decide to go back to the SkyRocket later, he won't offer this deal again. The reason he offered it was because they would lose money on the exchange. What would you guys have done?
Don't get me wrong, I liked the Skyrocket, I even had it rooted. For the support of roms and awesome devs the OG GS2 has, it was a toss up. The Snapdragon processor lag was not noticeable when even scrolling fast through the forum categories this site has. Anyway glad to be back xD
Off to root this phone again!
You're crazy dude. If you could have gotten back $100 and only been out $50 you should have kept the skyrocket.
I'm not much of a penny pincher. I'm definitely not rich, but in the end it's not a lot of money and you only live once. I'm not going to live my life being cheap. Geez I probably spend $300 a month just in Starbucks.
I returned my SG2 and paid the extra $50 to get the Skyrocket. Of course I live in an LTE area, but usually use wifi at home anyway.
My thoughts were that the SR is more future proof. Also I see no lag with either phone. People with a sg2 who say they see lag on the SR are really on crack. They are both really speedy. I don't base a phone on benchmarks which rate things I would never really do.
But in the end, if you're saving basically a tanks worth of gas made you happy, then I guess that is what matters.

I will switch to Skyrocket if it's $99 in my Boston area ($250 instead) and i only got this one for $50. So in order to get the Skyrocket i need to put an extra $200. Hmmm too much.

I know it was only $50, but I also had a little over $100 in accessories on the OG GS2: Zagg Shield, Casemate pop case, extended battery, Taurus bumper. So in the end I do end up saving $150. Initially all I really wanted to do was see how much development would happen in that 30 day period.

So true. Both will be outdated within a month. At least the SGSII will have the huge dev community.
And LTE... that'll just get me to my 2GB data limit quicker. I'm on Wifi alot anyway and barely stream anything anyway.

SR is not more future proof - as it's a niche device with little in common with other devices, it's going to get very attention development-wise, officially or unofficially.
As compared to the I777, which can get nearly anything the I9100 gets, which is Samsung's hottest-selling phone of 2011.

Welcome back, I think that the OGS2 is the better device for me. Glad you like it as well!
my take...
I returned the Galaxy S II for the 'Rocket... At first I was going to use my contact extension to buy and sell an iPhone 4S and use the profit to finance a Galaxy Note but now that I have LTE there's no going back, especially with my grandfathered unlimited data... The bluish display tint is annoying but I can put up with it, especially since I got the 'Rocket for $150. Fair dinkum for sure.
I have never done a 30days switch till this year. It's the way Samsung/AT&T had made their release on the Galaxy S2 and the variants.
As they release 2 "similar" phone within the 30days period. Which gives us the consumer the ability to go on a "trial" basis thanks to 3rd party stores like BB, Walmart, and Target with their 30days no question as return policy.
I bought the sgs2 for $260 out the door the hour it came out while paying verizon $220 to break my unlimited data contract and final bill. Yup, $480 and metered data this phone cost me. Best mobile month of my life.

Yes the dev part is true. Me on the other hand I don't run custom roms. I did when I had the captivate being as it took forever for 2.2 to come out, and when it did I already moved on.
I used to jailbreak all my iPhones just so I could customize it. But I never really got on to the custom rom bandwagon with android phones.
Stock works just fine for me.
I still think it's more future proof though being as LTE is the next generation and which is the future. It will keep expanding in coverage and in the end I think the SR would be the better choice for that reason.
For me, I like the bigger screen of the SR (my eyes aren't getting any better as I age), and I live in an LTE area.
I am actually enjoying the SR much better than I did my Atrix, although the Atrix is a great phone as well.
On a side note, I wonder why AT&T is only doing Visual Voicemail with their LTE devices. It would be easy to just offer the app for other androids. I used YouMail for my other phones which works great, but just something about having it built in to the carrier I like better.

[Q] Galaxy Tab 10.1 Pricing?

Even with the Asus TF Prime released and shipping, I still have my heart set on the GTab 10.1. My only concern is the similar price tag for two products released nearly half a year apart.
Do you guys think the price for the GTab will drop now that the Prime is the best android tablet out there (at least spec-wise) or is it just a waste of time and I should get it now?
I know there is no way to know for sure but I would like the hear your opinions.
Thanks
Read in a thread that Walmart is selling wifi 16gb for 349$ in US. Try for such offers
I got mine from Walmart for $349--but only because they substituted it for the Acer Iconia they had advertised. I got the only one my local store had.
I think you answered your own question (as it gets older and newer gear comes out the price will go down), but I'd say since Samsung is taking a page from the Apple playbook and not discounting old hardware until newer hardware is available, I think that the MSRP will not change.
That said, some retailers may discount it. Amazon has already dropped the price to $450, and I think it won't be long before others drop it to $400. If the $50 is worth it, wait 2 months. If not, get your tablet now and join the fun! BTW- make sure you get a warranty unless you're getting a really good deal. Sometimes people think they've done well by saving $50 with a craigslist deal...

Best way to purchase international phone to the states advice?

I think I'd prefer the International version instead of the S4 processor. I'm mostly if not always on Wi-Fi so I don't think 4G LTE will matter much to me.
I'm wondering what others have done in the past and am curious about your experience on buying international phones? Did you guys wait a few months for the price to go down? Where did you purchase your international version of your phone? Etc.
Any advice would be great. Thank you.

I have purchased two SGS IIs and my Note USED from US buyers after they had been around a few months. I would not be considered an"early adopter" by any stretch. More of a "wait and see" who is unhappy with their device and wants to sell. I usually buy when the price hits $150 - $200 below retail new.
I don;t worry about warranties because I am going to void it anyway if I purchased new.
Seems this one will have a few more available. LOL I like it and will lilkely get one later this Spring or early Summer. Development will be in full force and the ROMS should stabilize and the major issues will be resolved .
Not until a device gets in the MAS market do the warts show up. Samsung cannot possibly beta test like thousands of early adopters.
My advice would be WAIT....and see how the people who LIKE it now will feel about it after a few months and What developers develop for it. .
Don't be swayed by those who hate the "design" Use your phone from the inside out not the outside in. I ended up with a White Note because it was available and priced right and hated how attention getting it was and skinned it with a dark decal. Made it look less obtrusive.
Personally I think its better to wait a couple of months for the price to go down. Money isn't something we should spend so lightly, especially on a phone that will be as capable as others.
$1 gets you a reply
Also wait for people to start posting problems with their screens like the Note which was a huge headache.

In my experience, eBay is overpriced for international version. Craigslist is cheaper but unlikely you find an international version. I never tried buying from overseas websites.
I'm lucky enough to visit Hong Kong every summer. Probably pick up s3 there. Though the prices are high I might have to wait... (expecting $600 s2 was about that when I went last year) Annoyed it might not work with T-Mobile though.

Considering the i717...Opinions welcomed

Hey all,
TLDR; I'm budget consious. Do you recommend a $50 refurbed Note for upgrade now, or wait for a refurbed S3 or HOX upgrade?
I'm currently still on the i897 Captivate running CM10 nightlies. For the most part pretty happy with it (GPS is of course spotty), but I've been sitting on an upgrade waiting for something good (read: cheap) to come up on the Note or S3.
AT$T currently has a deal for $50 refurbed Note (+2 year renewed contract) apparently upgraded to ICS.
I'm wondering what thoughts you folks may have regarding this deal and/or how the Note is post-ICS upgrade. I'd almost certainly root and flash a custom ICS or JB ROM immediately, but I see there's been reports of issues especailly with GPS on the Note in ICS.
I also see the DEV support on the i717 is excellent and I recognize many names here from folks who moved on from the Cappy...so that's great, but I'm really hoping for a solid phone with no obvious flaws like we all know the Cappy had with the GPS woes.
Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
TIA
For $50.00
To get a like new note...I'd be all over that deal.
the note is great device, with a huge development base. and It's gonna be around for a while...(forever)....IMHO
I got my i717 recently and have been very pleased with it!
The screen is crisp clear bright and HUGE!
The devs are really good and really friendly!
If you are thinking about it I'd say go for it!
GPS is accurate within 4 meters for me!

Go to a local AT&T store and play with the Note and decide then.
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke
NOTE user:
"take a deep breath, make sure to get a good look at it, relax and slowly take it in, the size is overwhelming at first but you will have a happy ending afterwards".
Woman:
Can't go wrong with the note. A refurb goes through quality checks that will ensure it's like new anyways, and you'll have a 90 day warranty where I assume you'll be able to keep exchanging for more refurbs until you get a good one if you get a lemon...which you probably won't get a lemon.
HOX is a good phone, but I'm impartial to Samsung due to their screens and how friendly they are to custom developing. The screen on the note or the gs3 are untouchable by any other phone on the market imho. Its pretty much impossible to hard brick this phone if you dont flash anything you shouldnt, ie from the international note...so long as you stay here you can recover from most anything you mess up. GPS is amazing because the note has both agps and glonass functionality...super fast, super accurate locks. If you can handle the size, get the note, hands down. Even if it seems a bit large, most people quickly grow accustomed to it and can't see themselves going back to a smaller screen.

I agree with all the above posters - the note is a fantastic device and a steal at $50 (I wish I payed that for mine). I haven't had any gps issues on ice or jb. But i would definitely play with both the note and the S3 before making a decision.
Just out of curiosity, how much is a refurb S3 or HOX?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
Thank you all for the replies.
I am sorely tempted...went to the local AT$T store and determined it will fit in my pocket. That would have been a deal breaker!
To the previous poster, there are no S3 or HOX refurbs at AT$T yet. For a long time, the Note refurb was ~$200 on their website and suddenly dropped to this price quite recently which obviously is making way for the Note2's.
Agreed on Samsung. HOX was under consideration b/c ppl say the build quality is good and Costco had them new for $80 and no upgrade fee. However no external SD or battery access was a big turn off.
After my initial experience with the Captivate of having an essentially crippled phone on 2.1 I swore them off...until I got tired of waiting on Froyo and discovered all you fine folk at XDA. Obviously now I've come to appreciate the Cappy for it's amazing flexibility and unbrickableness unless you screw up bootloaders. Who knew I'd get all the way from 2.1 -> 4.1.1 on this thing???
God I loved, er, still love my Cappy. It's my dad's phone now but every time I'm back home from my college town I mess with it still. The Note shares that same unbrickability, so you'll be happy with that. What I would love to see is Cappy styling brought back with Note size...mmm.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
Pulled the trigger today. Even got AT$T to waive the $36 activation.
Now onto Root/CWM/Odin research prior to decision on which custom ROM to flash
:good:
Thanks again all for the opinions.
$50 for refurb and nearly $100 per month for service is not a good deal. Buying the note outright and getting h2o or straight talk at 40-45 per month is better investment IMHO I did that buying the iPhone 4 for $65 refurb and I paid for nearly no data and nearly $85 per month with 200 text at the time.

Yeah, if it were just me on a individual plan I'd agree with you, but I'm on a family plan with 2 lines and we have a 24% corporate discount on the voice...so when we average out the per line cost it's about $55/line/month...Straight Talk is $45/line/month so I'd need to buy a phone outright for ~$240 (net $10 difference/month * 2 years) which might get me a used Galaxy S2 on Cowboom, or roll the dice on eBay for something a bit nicer (maybe).
Trust me I've done the math and unless I'm missing something, AT$T 2 year service plan is about best I can do now.
Congratulations on getting the note. You won't regret it. Do you have LTE where you are? If so, all the better reason to be with At&t.
I'm pretty sure the One X is now $99 on contract/upgrade.

If I could get another one for $50 I would...it's an awesome phone, super fast on custom ROMs, epic screen...Go for it, you won't be disappointed.

I can offer my take: it's the longest I've had a phone in a year? It's lasted almost a full month. (I don't own a computer, tablet or TV.) The Note does it all for me. It's a fantastic device, save for the ridiculous buttons at the bottom. Pretty easy to flash. And if you are like myself and thoroughly disgusted with the Note 2? Right now, it's the only choice.

low resale value

Hello fellow noters
I recently out of decided to sell my galaxy note to get the nexus 4 ( to use on simple mobile) and to my dismay the g-note i717 has a really really low resale value. From what I have seen on ebay and craigslist the average cost for a i717 is around the low 300s, which for me is bad, Very bad. If you take into account the money that paypal and ebay take for the commission of the sale you are left with 250 something. This probably has to do with the release of the note2 only 6 months later than the original note.
I'm not complaining because this is still a great device but the loss of value took me by surprise, but I will definitely think twice before getting another Samsung device close to its release date.
In conclusion my friends I would advice you that if you want a Samsung device wait 4-6 months and buy it out of contract for 1/2 the price and if you are planning on reselling it later take a deep breath before looking for the resale values.
IMHO I see the Nexus 4 as a Downgrade from the Galaxy Note 1...
NO SD CARD.
Non-Removeable Battery
Max 16 Gigs of Storage.. Max..
Smaller Screen....
But.. Enjoy
All android phones lose there value fast because theres a new better one every week. The reason something like iphone hold there value so long is because there is only 1 a yr.

I see it as a huge upgrade because
I don't need more than 16GB of storage because I don't put 50000 songs on my phone when I don't listen to them all anyways.
I don't really need to remove the battery ever, and it has better battery life than my note which is horribly awful.
It has android 4.2 official from the get go, and will get future android updates a week or so after announcement. Current note doesn't have official 4.1 yet, and 4.2 is out! And CM10 is still not stable. I'm so done waiting 6 months for an android update, especially with how awesome the changes have become.
Screen is a bit smaller yes, but it's higher PPI.
2GB of RAM is very necessary for anyone who is a power user. I constantly have to reload apps.
Quad core krait is awesome and should never lag. note1 lags often.
It doesn't have LTE which does actually suck but will be better for battery life and HSPA 42 in Canada is pretty good
And it's $350!
You could argue the Note2 is a better phone than the nexus4 and in many ways it is, but I still think getting android updates is more important for me. And the price is great.
I'll be selling my note1 for $300 next week. It's lower than I'd like but allows me to upgrade to the nexus4 for very cheap!
Sound Like They're Getting Your Money.
I"ll Keep My Note *1* And My $30.00 A Month T-Mo Plan And Jamie's ParanoidAndroid JellyBean Rom All Day Long Over A Phone That Won't Allow Me To Expand My Memory Forcing Me To "The Cloud" And Not Even Allowing Me Access To My Phone's Battery Making Me A *Slave* To A Charging Outlet...
Enjoy Your Nexus 4....
The main reason I'm switching is because even with the blaze radios my speeds are very very slow. I am going to miss the spen, and my 32 gb sd card but due to the lack of support from Sammy to their devices and the low resale value I refuse to spend 700$ on a note 2.
The reason for this post is to tell you guys to get prepared for the loss of value when you try to upgrade from the note.

I bought my og note when att was doing their $50 refurb note upgrade deal. Mines legit very rarely reboots even at 1836mhz . I'm gonna wait till something better is available for another deal like that. Then you don't have to trip on ever losing money.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I don't like contracts much less with att. This is mostly for people like me that buy off contract and use pre paid that the depreciation of the phone affect us. IMO signing a contract with att or Verizon is like selling your soul for a discount on a device you end up paying triple by the end.
that sucks you should have waited and sold it on CL and would have received more money...You were in to much of a hurry to sell if that you lost money...Everyone else is getting 350 min for there device....And the nexus 4 sucks...YOUR complaining the note 1 has no value??? Good luck selling that Lg phone.. lmao...you'll get 100 dollars for that LG ...You make no sense...Note 2 crushes that toy!

I haven't sold it yet and I'm not complaining, I love this thing. I don't really mind if the nexus loses value because it only costs 350$, but that is another topic.
the Note does have a low resale value if you take in to account that it used to cost around 700$ and now you have to negotiate with someone to barely get half of your investment. Samsung products do devaluate quite fast because they flood the market with their phones, release new version every 6 months and they give retailers the option to sell the phone at the price they want. I got an S3 four months ago for 615 and I went to the same store today and saw it for 500. There is nothing bad with that, if you use it to your advantage and wait a while to get a great product for 2/3 of the its first retail price.

How do you figure it is triple? I have been on At&t since 1994. Not going to change. Have 5 lines with them. Always had great service. It would make no.sense not to get it subsidized for me. Going to to pay same price for service whether off or on contract.
from a galaxy far far away....
The triple is for the overpaying the service (I used to pay 120 more or less monthly on att for the past 5 years now I pay 50 everything unlimited) and if att works for you awesome, but all of this talk about subsidizing strays from the fact that the note devaluates pretty fast.
I've never seen a phone hold value...Technology is constanly upgraded and replacing other models every month..Just the way it is..Computers are worth half as less in about 3 months as well...
Ello mate!
Honestly if you want to sell your note then that's perfectly fine. You don't need to justify your decision to sell to the people on this forum because what is it to them if you sell or keep? Lol I don't know why people get butt hurt over it when it has nothing to do with them. Will they be using the phone or is it for you? Also don't let people's opinions discourage you. The nexus 4 is awesome and I want to get one as well....note is great but i have decided it's just too big for me. I am a very active person and it is actually getting in the way rather than simplifying my life. Can't go running with it. Can't take it to the gym..nope! Can't walk around the gym with the note in my gym shorts lol. I don't want to shell out additional money for another mp3 player.
I agree with you on the resale value. I put mine up on Craigslist for 430 and got so many low ball offers it's ridiculous. I am just going to keep it now ... meh.
I am buying a Note II this week, but only because my corp plan lets me it it for $200. The Spousal Unit would never allow a $750 + tax phone purchase in this house.
If I get $300 for the Note I then I am happy, since it lets me purchase the next upgrade for next to nothing.
That said, I am thinking of holding on to the Note I until December when the official JB comes out. The Note I does lag on stock rom a bit (never tried the custom JB ones), and I want to be able to sell it to non-XDA folks with full S-pen support. I am thinking that the Note I stock experience will be much better in December, and that if I show it to a couple of people I know they will be happier with it then. If an offer comes by before then, I'll let it go at that time I suppose.
My brother just sold his Note for $300 to a guy in Sudbury. He was a bit disappointed as well.
I told him it's a niche phone with low demand in a small market.

Read the important part in red which you missed. If you have ONE LINE, non-contract makes sense in some cases. If you have more than one, nope.
As for the OP's whinge, who cares, everything that isn't a "durable product" devalues fast, think about how many THOUSANDS your car devalues the second it's "used".

100% true! the nexus 4 will be worth nothing as Google drops its price, and I sold one of my skyrockets for 350 on Craig's list so I'd sell my note 1 for $400 up, and I'm in Fl too. Its all about the condition of the phone. If your note is mint like mine you'll sell it for $400 cause people will rather pay $400 for perfect condition than $300 for some old scratched up junk. In 6 mo. Your $350 nexus will be worth $199 or less cause its used. How's that for devaluation.

Well that and Apple sells all their hardware at a high margin keeping the prices high at retail.
