AM I CRAZY!? Or do i have Prime fever :) - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Ok here is my story. Either i am OCD, have to much free time or crazy. Which my GF seems to agree with the last one A tad bit about myself i am a electronic junkie. Just in the last 2 weeks ive gotten a PS Vita, a new phone "Samsung Galaxy Note" & of course the other thing you will read below. I just love new technology and utilizing it to its potential. And even beyond what the company intended on. And no im not rich, i think my GF is making me eat Ramen Noodels for the next month lol.
I just got back today from Staples with my either 6th or 7th Prime, lost count lol. I was there at 8am being online showed "low stock" they had one though. I added a extra $106 to get it while returning my Galaxy Tab i bought last night which i never opened.
So basically i bought a Prime around a month or so ago along with a keyboard dock. Love the thing to death & thought the dock was a great addition. Even bought a Microsoft USB wireless receiver so i can use my wireless Xbox controller on games and such. And also bought a micro HDMI to connect to my Samsung smart TV.
My first Prime worked good i think i bought right around the time they were first pushing the ICS updates. But had bad wifi drop off by just walking into my living room. Started reading XDA and obviously it was a problem. So i figured id exchange it for perhaps a better one.
(2nd Prime): Basically identical to the first perhaps a tad better. Kept if for a few days before me and my GF agreed for the price i paid it should perform much better.
(3rd Prime): This is around the time whe started to receive some OTA updates and things seemed much better. Better wifi in my 3rd one which was a C1 serial. Long story short returned and was gonna sit back and wait to see what happens with ASUS.
(4th Prime): Had Prime withdraw, or thats what my GF called it and things started to look up so i got another. The Wifi was pretty damn good this time. GPS was ok while on wifi. Only problem was there was bad light bleed and 2 dead pixels . Figures...
(5th Prime): Exchanged to Gamestop no problem and the 5th was just as good as the 4th with a tiny bit of light bleed but no dead pixels. A keeper. First day or so it ran great. 2nd day i started getting my random one reboot per day, lockups and youtube glitches. Almost seems like it performs flawless the first day and says ok you had enough fun lol. So i returned and did not get another
(6th Prime): So.... after 24 full hours i missed my Prime It's so nice having a tablet to do the tasks i do like web browsing, checking email, youtube. Customizing, rooting/roms and such. So i got another knowing the problems and hoping perhaps it would be a better experience.
The next day they MWC introduces the T700 and i felt slightly shafted. My GF told me id return it and wait out which i kinda agreed. I did just buy a Galaxy Note and i can kinda use that as my Tablet i figured. So after getting my 2-3 reboots per day browser constantly crashing and youtube glitching and no new fix from ASUS. You guessed it i returned it.
Now last night i was really bummed on being tablet-less. I seen Staples was selling the Galaxy tab 10.1 for $399. And the new Galaxy Tab coming out is basically the same thing. So i went and picked up a Galaxy Tab 10.1 for the time being until perhaps the TF700 comes out. Plus the development is great for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 on here rom wise. I could overclock, root, and install roms right out of the box.
So i brought it home and i let it sit on my desk all night. Jumped on XDA on my phone and was reading while i was staring at the unopened Galaxy tab on my desk. Long story short i never opened it and exchanged it for ANOTHER PRIME this morning . I just did not think i would be satisfied overall with the Galaxy Tab knowing the Prime is out.
Something keeps bringing me back to the Prime. This is my last and final shot lol, i even promised my GF that. Something about the all aluminum back to me is sweeter than that of the TF-700 with that plastic strip that looks misplaced. Something about having it now rather than waiting for the new one months away. Something about this damn tablet keeps bringing me back at least. As long as my wifi works as good as my last few units ill be happy i could care less about GPS. I honestly thing the great developers over here can work the kinks out. So as i type this i have a un-opened Prime in front of me. Which is a C1 serial, funny my last two were C2's. So wish me luck!
So i ask you am i CRAZY, persistent or what lol? Anybody else out there like me? Make me feel better! Hahaha. I apologize for the long post. I just felt like i needed to get it off my chest. And its hard to explain something to women about electronics.
PS: Best part so far from exchanging my defected ones is the microfiber collection i have. Those cloths are bad ass!

i havent got a prime yet... but thinking should i go down the same path as i have been waiting for so long lol
only a few t3 tab is shown in MWC so far and they wont be available till june i guess.. unless samsung pull out a quad core tab next month, otherwise i am ready for my long time battle too lool

you remind me of someone else who had prime fever but constantly bashed Asus. yet now he talks of getting yet another one...lmao I'm starting to call b.s. on alot of these stories but yours sound believable at least.
I'd say just open it up and check it out. you know you tempted to anyways..lol. if its wifi is and no bad light bleed, then just keep it and enjoy it. it is a good device and people know it. that's why they keep coming back or hanging around. just let us know how it goes. don't feel bad. we have others who "Supposedly" had the fever worse than you and yet they still coming back saying they got another one. whether true or not. they looking like prime crackheads..lol. prime got people hooked and addicted. good reason to be because it is a great device.
I got my device 12/22 from Gamestop. wifi works great. no light bleed. all around good device. never had or needed to exchange. my 1 device worked great from the beginning and I have an early batch one. use it constantly. always performs 100% for me.

So, you say me going through 6 units is bs? Well, i will be getting another one, just like it too much.

Do you have costco near your area? If so, return it and purchase Galaxy Tab 10.1.... Use/rent it until the next batch of tablets arrive from either Asus, Acer, Lenovo.. Samsung.. or whatever. Costco has 90 day return policy (thus, you can rent your tab for 3 month)......
This is what I'm doing.. granted.. I also have Prime atm (bought a Prime, returned it.. but got another Prime as gift that I can't return as it was purchased from Gamestop =/)

Just opened it . Still in the plastic of course lol. Doing my usual very very first app downloads.
1.Wifi Analyzer
2.Speed Test
3.GPS Test (could care less about GPS but testing is fun)
4.Dead pixel test.
5.Light bleed test
From the start testing using Wifi Analyzer it keeps a pretty good wifi signal in my living room. Close to my Galaxy Note Phone, the Prime just jumps up and down a bit not a big deal. Prob the aluminum.
Using Speedtest, i know not the best way but a fast way to check. Getting 14.5 mbps & my internet speed is only rated to 15mbps. Very very good in my book so far with wifi.
In the dark in my bathroom during the boot, best way to check for light bleed fast. I have a small light bleed in the top left corner. Not super bad just barley creeping through. Nothing that would make me box it up right away and bring it back to the store.
Im upgrading FW now. Will report back. Next step is to remove the plastic and inspect for dead pixels. Crossing my finger there isn't any
It does feel good to have the Prime back in my hands.
EDIT: NO dead pixels wohoo!

feeling guilty..lol but no I wasn't talking about you. nothing wrong with liking device to where you want a good one. but there's obvious signs from people to call b.s. on what their saying. seems some are just looking for attention or a pity party..lol. alot of people in this forum have been called out on lies and contradicting stories. that's what I mean. so me n others tend to take anything they say with a grain lmfao salt.
its like a kid always lying he has this or that when in reality he doesn't. he just tries to make himself look cool by always trying to brag or say he has this or that. when he doesn't..lmfao I don't get their reasoning but OK. SMH

I have a BJ's & Sams Club no Costco. How are you enjoying your Galaxy Tab? Never opened mine lol. I however have a Galaxy Note which obviously is similar.
How do you compare the Galaxy Tab's screen & colors to the TP. I find after using my Prime & picking up my Galaxy Note the colors seem far punchier on the note.
While vibrant colors are good i still prefer the power of the Prime in ts quad core ness. Like Mickey said in Rocky 2. We need speed, speed speed! Greasy, fast lightning speed! Lol.

I haven't read any BS stories on here yet lol. Maybe im not looking hard enough. I can safely say that all the times i returned my Prime not even 24hrs later i missed it sorely. Even with the problems that some people are having or the ones that i have had its still a far superior tablet to anything currently on the market.

Quick update.
Whoa, just upgraded to the latest OTA. Figured i try GPS for kicks. With wifi "OFF" sitting in my living room it picks up 11-14 Sats in about 5-8 secs. Its cloudy today for reference. With a accuracy of 24 feet. And usually uses about 10-11 of them "in use". I had one with a good GPS but not this good. Especially not being on wifi/
Again to mee GPS does not matter if it works without wifi or not or even at all. This is one of the fun parts the testing lol.

Oh, I owned Galaxy Tab before I purchased Prime. I sold Galaxy Tab when Prime came out... but I returned the Prime I purchased as GPS is important to me (it's funny, but the Prime that I purchased was also from Gamestop but I was able to return it with luck & also it was during the whole Asus announcement fiasco about GPS).
Anyways, it's pointless to compare Prime and Galaxy Tab. When it comes to display, I'll give the slight edge to Prime (Gtab 10.1 doesn't have super amoled)... and if you look at everything else.. SPEC wise, Prime is just superior.
However, when it comes to functionality and my USER experience.. I mostly use Galaxy Tab as it doesn't have the WIFI/GPS problem. I travel often & that mobility is important to me. I hate carrying multiple device (i even purchased bluetooth GPS receiver for Prime but I hate charging & carrying multiple device) & at least with mine, I hardly get any WIFI connection with PRIME when I travel. So, basically.. I mostly use my Prime at home (where I have the control of network setting)... and mostly use Prime for media device.

I've been thinking about that quote last night. How is Asus planning to market Prime when other tablets (especially from asus) drops? Mobile Tech Trendsetters & Early Adopters as Johny Shih put it.. typically are associated with purchasing the latest gadgets. That won't be the case when other Tablets are released... You can't tell a customer 3 month later.. and say.. "purchase a prime & be an early adopter to a device that was released few month ago...."
Don't you find that amusing, and rather poor marketing of Prime in the long run?

I did find it amusing. especially with the early adopter title considering issues being had with too many devices. I'd rather roll with The Mobile Tech Trendsetters. we will always be that since we had the first tegra3 quad core tablets. you could say we started the quad core/high powered/ next evolution of tablet computing.
so I think they need to roll with the trend setter title. early adopter will only bring memories of the gripes many suffered being an "early adopter" lol. I'm laughing now thinkn of all the jokes I seen up here so far in regards to that title. this has been one helluva roller coaster ride with Asus, prime, and this section of the forum.
you right, you can't tell a customer 3 months later he an early adopter still when newer products are released already. but that person can still be the trend setter though. lol.
edit: check out my tegra4 thread..I updated it last night with proof of the second version of tegra4/wayne chip having 8 A15 core CPU and will have between 32-64 GPU cores...directX11 compliant n more. The Godzilla of chips. haven't seen or heard anything that promising or ambitious from anyone.

2nd picture is a quick pic of my light bleed on the left hand upper corner which i believe is liveable. Ive seen worse.

I'm so envious of you being able to use the stylus of galaxy note to annotate those pics..lol cool. I'm seriously considering getting a Note soon. have you heard or seen that new LG Vu? its a huge phablet phone also but has a 4:3 aspect ratio like Ipad so it makes it look even bigger in wider than the note. I like it. plenty of screen area. its screen just as big as note or even larger. it definitely looks larger with 4:3 aspect ratio. which is different. as most use 16:9 ratio or so.

It says upto .. 8 cores. That and the first WAYNE.. especially when it comes to GPU (seems more or less an evolution from Tegra 3 again while the 2nd Wayne seems far more promising).. it looks lackluster again. But the first WAYNE seems.. like it'll be more or less on par with Qualcomm & TI OMAP quad cores. And they'll all be released around the same period.... so, that should be interesting.
We'll see.. the 2nd Wayne to battle against Intels x86 SoC (and possibly others .. i don't feel like doing links atm) won't be out til mid 2013 or so it seems.
Edit: It's interesting that they are creating 2nd Wayne for Windows 8 & are upping the "cores" for it...

The Note is absolutely one of the coolest gadgets ive owned so far. I had a Galaxy S2 before, so with the Note I got used to the screen size fast. Once you go above 4.3" you won't want to go back.
There is so many cool things you can do with the Note's stylus aside from just scribbling notes on a pad or a picture or "S-Pen" as Samsung insists of calling it. You can google pictures then crop your friends head onto another body, trust me the fun is endless. Samsung actually has a contest going on for 100k,50k, & 25k to the 3 developers who come up with the best app that utilizes the S-pen. Which im sure will be something cool.
Not to mention its like a mobile computer which is a huge plus for me. I did briefly see that new LG phone on engadget & slashgear's site. Seems pretty cool too, ill have to read more on it. But i got use to the size of the Note fast, it makes reading XDA on the go that much easier haha . Everything is just that much easier. I could care less if it looks big held up to my ear. Ive actually gotten alot of compliments on it. Plus i don't make many calls anyway, mostly texting, web browsing and emails. On a side note the call quality is insanely good and clear on the Note. Speaker phone is awesome too.
Holding my GF's iphone in my hand it feels like a toy haha. Nothing against Apple they make good phones. I am just not a fan of the locked iOS, and i am sick of seeing everyone with one. I gave my iPhone 4 up long ago and haven't looked back.

Asus Transformer Prime($499) vs HP Touchpad ($99) *Video*

This is a normal usage test I was doing on both the tablets I got for early xmas gifts
Since I don't need two, I was trying to decide which one to keep.
Notes:
Transformer Prime is running on normal mode, full brightness (super ips mode off).
Both tablets are running the same version of GO Launcher EX and the same live wallpaper.
The Prime shipped with non-working GPS, a piece of dust inside the screen right above the docking port. It also has screen bleed that is very noticeable during boot screen and is some-what noticeable during normal use (its right above dock port on the status bar.).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
HP Touchpad is running full brightness.
The Touchpad has very minor screen bleed which is barley noticeable during boot screen and not noticeable at all during use.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I recorded my experience on video.

Good show. Looks like $99 was a better deal so far... I'm sure once seven get their hands on the prime, she will sing. But HP isn't doing too bad for non native android running on it...

That's the thing, the price comparison is rather disingenuous. If you managed to get one for that, it was an amazing deal and it'll be a long time before anything will beat it on value. But you can't go out to a store now and buy one, and that was never the intended price - a deal like that isn't likely to be coming around again any time soon.
It looks pretty competitive with the Prime on those tasks you showed, although there has to be some advantage running CM7 compared to the Prime's almost brand-new Honeycomb firmware; we'll have to see how the Prime develops with ICS and, hopefully, custom ROMs, as it surely has more power under the hood if it can bring that to bear.
Specific issues aside, I think a lot of the disappointment around this tablet is coming from those who already have a decent dual-core tablet (especially if it was bought at an unbelievably good price..!) and were expecting the Prime to be dramatically faster out of the box. It remains to be seen whether quad-core tablets will "age" slower than dual-core ones, as I've experienced on the desktop, but I consider the quad-core an investment in the future more than anything else. Quad-core SoCs will surely start to take over at the high-end in time, and then more optimisations will be made for them when they do. I wouldn't upgrade from this year's dual-cores to Tegra 3, though - those devices are still decent, and if you already have a good tablet it makes more sense to hang on to that at the moment and see what comes around next year.
Apples to Oranges. You're comparing an overclocked custom kernel, on a custom ROM (CM7...that is unmatched in speed by any and all stock ROMs out there), on a tablet bought at fire-sale prices...to the Prime purchased at full retail price, running a stock kernel/ROM, running an aftermarket launcher that's slower than pond water on the Prime (stock HC is light-years faster) and say the Prime doesn't measure up.
There is a serious issues of validity in your "experiment".
Edit: please don't try to take this as me blindingly defending the Prime. I'm just trying to keep invalid misinformation to be taken as "word of god" as it often happens on the internet.

Look, I've got issues with my prime too. But we all know this comparison is a little bit sneaky. It's like taking an underpowered econo car that the dealership is trying to get rid of and throwing twin turbos on it - yup, it'll probably beat some high-powered coupes off the show room floor, and most of us might be happy with that. But deep down inside you know it's a pretty stupid comparison.
Just give the prime some time.
lol at this!
come on this is a blatant touchpad fan boy post.
having a CM7 custom ROM vs stock first revision of ROM on a tablet that's been out since last week.
lmao, so many people get butt hurt over it... (calm down, its just a side by side comparison of the two devices I have)
The bottom line is that the prime has 5 cores, the touchpad has 2 cores but according to setcpu its only using 1 of its cores.
And also the prime seems to be shipping with many nasty defects (for $499 you wouldn't expect that) where the touchpad didnt have any (except for a tiny amount of light bleed).
I decided to keep both devices. Touchpad for development and the prime for gaming (although right now it cannot play too many games, but im sure it will change in the future.).

How do you know the Touchpad had very little issues? you bought it at $99, way late in the game. Ask the people who paid $499 for the 32GB when it first came out. Most of the original issues have been resolved over time. Search the web and see, the touchpad had many issues in its infancy. The Prime is in it's infancy but will grow up to be a great BIG BOY!
My Touchpad has many issues in both webOS and CM7.. CM7 alpha 3.5 was working fine but now it stutters and force closes a lot.. for the webOS.. the damn thing just keeps disconnecting from the my router at random times and the only way for me to get it working again is to reboot the Touchpad.. I got it for my son to play with but he's gotten frustrated with it and steals my Transformer to play with.
There are some issues and quirks I can live with. My son can do so as well. The Touchpad has issues that gets him too frustrated though and he's usually one to tell me anything can be fixed

@OP how come my stock browser on prime is running fluid with just a settings mod and your touchcrap needs CM 7 with overclocked processor to achieve the same.
people are not but hurt you infantile.
your showing a highly custom ROM well into the devices launch when they had time to work on it verses a brand new tablet which has had zero time for devs to work on it.
Just sell your TP and then go with your touchpad....It's that plain and simple! Have a nice day and please stay out of the TP section

I counted down how long it took for each to first show something on page and then finish completely loading the page. his touchpad clearly showed it was the loser in that comparison. took almost double the time of prime to fully load that web page on his touchpad. prime was also faster on showing something from page on screen first. same with his Netflix comparison. I loved how he gave his touchpad a few seconds to load and start scrolling vs. the prime which he started scrolling immediately..lol. touchpad failed in that comparison also. even with him giving the touchpad a lil more time to load, prime still showed more on screen first and loaded movies up faster. the touchpad had a bunch of gray squares when first loaded and took longer to fully load all the movies on-screen. as far as his UI scrolling goes, looks to me that prime performed just fine. there where even instances on his touchoad where his taps or scrolls didn't immediately register and looked laggy. touchpad for 99 is a great deal, hands down. but its in no way competition to the prime, on any front.
annoying thread
Prime touchpad blah blah blah... As far I can use the touchpad for all my task I want from a tablet and smooth. Who care about 5 core. I bet the ipad is best, because of the more than 10 cores lol.

How do you know the Touchpad had very little issues? you bought it at $99, way late in the game. Ask the people who paid $499 for the 32GB when it first came out. Most of the original issues have been resolved over time. Search the web and see, the touchpad had many issues in its infancy. The Prime is in it's infancy but will grow up to be a great BIG BOY!

all this is too funny. I will admit for only 99 that touchoad is a good device, it looks like. the comparisons to Prime though falls very short for several reasons.

Alternative to the prime

Guys,
Thanks to this forum I found out about the GPS issue and was able to cancel my order with OD on time. Once again, XDA saved me some troubles.
It seems this problem is very (!) similar to the one I had with my Tmobile Samsung phone. Nothing was able to fix that GPS.
Anyways, I have a problem.
I MUST buy a tablet this week to give to someone as a gift. GPS is important.
Considering the Prime is out of question, which one would you recommend? I'm researching and doing my homework, but it is also good to hear from you guys.
Thanks in advance.

If you need something right away. Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a good goto android tablet.
If you don't need it ASAP, wait until Q2 2012. They'll be rolling out a lot of new gadgets.
Thanks. Yes, I need it ASAP. Birthday gift. I don't have an option.

Realistic advice: Unless you want your friend to be ASUS's corporate guinea pig while they fix all of the quirks in the device, get the GTab or something comparable. Giving someone a gift in which they have to immediately be aware of it's defects and the possibility of RMA'ing it is a really crappy gift.
Thanks guys, but the GPS MUST be totally functional. Device WILL be used for navigation with Sygic.
My vote would also be for the galaxy tab 10.1 or 8.9. They work and look great. As a present unless the person likes messing with these the tab seems to be working well. Too many issues right now with the prime jmo. Btw I am typing this on a tab 10.1 but I have a prime on order. Not sure if I am going to cancel it or not. The geek in me still wants it so I probably won't.

I am also vacillating because of the concerns raised in this forum, however, due to the inconsistencies with reports of bad performance and stability, I am wondering if there was an issue with just initial batches and that newer ones (just built) are less likely to exhibit any of the serious issues raised with GPS and wifi?
I am going to wait for my (expansys-usa) order to be fulfilled. I don't think that a more appealing tablet will come out before June.
Is there some correlation with the defective (or working) units and a specific build date, build location and/or batch number?

well if you want a sub par device on specs, display, perfaormance and looks, get something else. If you want something that will truly be next level tableting, get the Prime. buff said!
THE POWER IS YOURS! choose wisely and don't settle for something less based on a few gripes a minority of users been having. if you absolutely need GPS...then get the prime and external Bluetooth GPS receiver bring in the new year with the most powerful Android tablet in the world. and will hold that title for the next 4-6 months easily. maybe longer.
it'll be silly to pay$499 for another tab that is outdated specwise and consumer wise. when you can pay the same price and have cutting edge technology. galaxy tab sux anyways..lmao touchwiz over honeycomb blows and lags even more than other build or versions of honeycomb. lmfao
Another vote for the Galaxy Tab 10 or 8

its actually pretty nice. not as thick as it looks. I've played around with it in person. its a decent tegra2 tab. but it wasn't as much of a success as Sony would've hoped for. alot of issues with lag surrounding it. if anything I were to get other than Prime, it would be the Galaxy tab 7.7. it will have the best display and most powerful out of the Tab lineup. that galaxy note is really nice also. eliminate a device and that can be used as a tablet also. that 5.3in screen is huge and beautiful for a phone/tablet.
Guys, listen to what the dude sez. He needs good GPS. This is for his friend, not for you.
The only Android tabs with good wireless performance are the Xoom and the Samsung GT 10/8.9. I like the Xoom since it has more I/O (SD slot, micro-USB), but it's heavy and its look is at best industrial. So the only proven choice is the SGT.
If it's for a woman, suggest the 8.9 for lighter weight and easier handling, w/o sacrificing resolution. In fact, if it's for on-the-go use, you may also consider the SGT 7 Plus for yet more portability. The 8.9 would be the sweet spot, though.

Wow, I didnt know 50-60% failure rate on GPS and other things were "a few grips a minority of users been having"...really? Then why are the forums exploding with mostly negative reviews? the minority and very very lucky are the ones that have all their dreams in a good tablet.
I am quickly becoming one that am tired of factory reseting my tablet 2-3 or more times a day because the screen is unresponsive or it just decides to do random screen selections. I have high hopes that maybe..just maybe it will be fixed in ICS...but i'm a realist.
oh, and Acer and HTC will be to market soon..so the "next 4-6 months easily..maybe longer" statement is based on factless and honestly niave speculation.
By the tablet and play the lottery. 50% chance you'll get a superb device...50% chance you'll get a 499 POS. You have to decide for yourself if your willing to deal.
As of now, i'm cancelling my other Newegg preorder and will probably return this one..but since i've got 30 days to return to gamestop..and the the manager has seen first hand my problem..(oh..and the district manager returned his on friday becuase of the screen issues and lockups...) i'm going to play with it for a bit longer and see what happens mid january if at least on thing can go right with this device...release of ICS.
Hey it's the new year. Let's give peeps the benefit of the doubt and not be so quick on the trigger. Peace and good will and all that. Think positive thoughts.

just take a look at the polls. on TransformwrForums there's a poll asking if people have issues. more than 70% said No, perfectly happy with it. check out all the various polls here. all of them show Prime in good light. people with issues are the minority, point blank. plus actually xda is the only blowing up with people complaining. TransformerForum is moving along very smoothly without all the threads of complainers. most of these people with issues are same ones posting a million different threads on same issue.
yes, the issues are real. but alot of them are overexaggerated. look at all the various polls in this section people made to try to make prime look bad. all it did was back fire and show the majority doesn't have issue. like the wifi poll shows majority don't have issues. the other poll on various issues. majority voted no problems and completely satisfied with device. sorry buddy, my device works perfectly fine. no issues. and do do most of other Prime owners also. its always the negative ones who will whine/be vocal the most in making threads. the positive people came out n voted in polls to show what most speak of is morsel isolated. most don't care about GPS, whether working or not. its not a dealbreaker for me. and since my display, performance, and wifi is great, I'm good
his quote on get the tablet and play the lottery is funny though. n actually Acer and other tab you mentioned will not be out soon cuz no other tablet has an official release date from manufacturer. keep dreaming buddy

Chance to compare SGT 10.1 to TFP

After being pissed at the delays of the Prime back in December (mostly with the retailer I purchased it from), I decided to cancel my Nov 22 pre-order. Reading some of the negative comments about the Prime from new owners here, I decided to pick up the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. However, even with the negativity being displayed at XDA I still longed to try out the TFP. What can I say, I'm a sucker for specs!
I love the SGT 10.1...even with the current stock ROM. Plan to change ROMs if I ultimately decide to keep it. I have a few days left to return for a full refund.
Just this morning, I found a Prime in stock in my city and will be picking it up later today. This will give me a chance to compare the two side by side and determine which one I will keep. If the Prime shows up with any defects at all (minus the GPS which is a known defect), that will make my decision fairly simple. I'm probably going to be overly picky while scrutinizing this device considering what I've read on this forum. If both feel just as good as one another, I will probably decide to keep the Prime.
My only gripe so far with the Galaxy Tab is that it's just not NEW technology. I wonder how much development can continue for that H/W. Whereas, the tegra3 development still needs to be born...but my assumption is that it will.
I will update with my thoughts.
As I'm sure the SG tab is a swell device, There is no comparison To The Prime.
That's like comparing a mustang to a Lamborghini Don't be fooled by some of the negative reviews. There were plenty like you who doubted. Then they took the plunge and never looked back since. They said they were glad they didn't let the negative comments from some persuade them. Plus only with the Prime will you get Free Ice Cream..lol Now what other tab is giving away free Ice Cream Sandwiches?
Instead, read the positive reviews, which FAR OUTWEIGH the negative ones.
Once you try the TFP with ICS I'm confident you will be returning the Gtab. TFP is by far the best tab experience I've had after trying most.

I know from many other forums that I frequent that negative comments (on just about any topic) are always SCREAMED much more loudly than anything positive. People rush to the internet to bring up the problems they are experiencing. Misery loves company???
The problem with reading the positive comments are the so-called fanboys that wear rose-coloured glasses. They will forgive just about any defect they see...or, they will not report on it and quietly seek to resolve their own issues while continuing to pump up the product.
Either way, it's really hard to determine from sites like this if problems really are rampant with a particular device (no doubt they do exist for some, though). A small vocal minority can make a huge difference in people's perception on how wide-spread these issues really are.
I am more than happy to have the opportunity to have both in hand and give them "my" real world test.

very good point and its Fair. The issues some people are having are very real. no denying that. I think the worst I've seen was people who experiencing screen banding issues. I saw some pics and it looks horrible. but as with any other issue, these are in very small numbers. Getting a prime now will more than likely be out of a new batch with the hardware updated that addresses BT/wifi issues n such. Still metal back though. Good Luck on your comparisons. I'm sure you will find the more stock Ice Cream Sandwich experience to be alot smoother n faster than the Galaxy with Touchwiz slapped over the OS. The Galaxy is a real nice device. But at the price point of Prime, the specs, and Performance, it can't be beat now. And the display is just lovely..lol. Report back on your findings.
The Gtab is quite nice, my brother has one and brought it over. I was able to play with the Gtab and the Prime at the same time. To me, the differences were more in the look and feel (I much prefer the Prime, but they are pretty close in size), I didn't get a chance to run any games or anything. However, this was before the ics upgrade which is definitely a game changer. For the same, or similar price, to me it is Prime all the way. Have fun comparing!
I sold my Galaxy Tab to buy my TFP which comes today (i hope), I got almost enough $$ from it to buy the TFP which to me was a no brainer given the improvement in specs, seemed like a good time to upgrade before getting stuck with old technology when the quad cores start flooding the market.
DAMN!
My order was cancelled saying that there were now none in stock. Guess I was a little late in the queue of orders.
Then...I saw it available at another location and promptly ordered...same thing happened again.
Well...I will keep trying until my refund date arrives....if not, the Galaxy Tab is the one for me. I`m going to continue looking for one in the next few days....really hoping to try one, though.
The prime might have ICS, but the galaxy is supposed to get cm9 by the end of the month. I would rather have cm9 over stock ICS. That being said, I sold my galaxy tab for the prime.
My wife has Sgt 10.1. They're just different. We both agree the Touchwiz has got to go. Other than that, if you don't want quad core and prefer the rather delicate plastic back of the sgt, keep it. Ps tf dock > sgt dock.
My wife has a GT 10.1, and when I was using my original Transformer I admit to being a bit jealous. The GT 10.1 has a markedly better screen than the TF101, is much thinner and lighter, and had some simple things that Samsung added that made it a bit nicer, like search in the stock email app.
The Prime, however, killed my envy. It feels more solid than the GT 10.1, is just as thin/light, is of course faster, and the screens are pretty close in normal lighting. However, take the two outside and turn on the Super IPS+ mode on the Prime, and there's no contest. The GT 10.1 is pretty much unusable in direct sunlight (like pretty much all other tablets), while the Prime is perfectly usable, even comfortable. Also, ASUS added in some of those nice missing features, like search in the stock email app.
So, while I'd say the GT 10.1 is the best tablet other than the Prime, the Prime is the better device.
Note: One thing that's certainly heads and shoulders better on the GT 10.1 is GPS. It locks on instantly, and maintains a lock well. It can easily be used as a navigation device using an app with local maps. Huge win here.

ah man, you have me laughing. I noticed you quoted what I said..lmfao its true though
I sold my GT 10.1 to get the Prime, which I have had for about 10 days now. The difference is like night and day. The GT 10.1 is so sluggish in comparison. The Prime is light, glam, the screen is amazing, ICS is brilliant, and the dock just adds a whole new dimension! Never looked back!

Advice from UK owner please

Just returned my tab 10.1 due to screen problem and looking for a replacement. Was thinking about tab 7.7 but i think only prime can play 1080p mkv with no problem. However, when i check the 'UK Transformer Prime PRE-ORDER LINKS AND ORDER TRACKING' all i can see is wifi, BT problems, dead pixel, light bleed.... is that means majority of the prime still has problem? should i waste my time to get one and try my luck
please give me some advice

There are plenty of folks who have good primes some who have had negative experiences and there are some peeps who spend their lives putting up negative posts on each and every thread whether they are relevant or not.
Like any new product there are teething problems and some peeps have had issues with bluetooth streaming, wi fi reception and in the very early days no serial number in the system. There have also been peeps with light bleed problems.
The wifi reception appears to be variable, when i am close to my router or AP it flies but reception can fall away when you move away from the wifi source.
The prime itself is a little belter and the keyboard dock is what makes t for me as it's functionality is increased dramatically with it and it makes typing so much easier! The keyboard is also brilliant for controlling a pc remotely through the included splash top streamer app which works really well and allows me to do things away from my pc that I could not do on the tablet.
I would also state that it is my view that the forthcoming models such as teh 300 and infinity will have improved wifi abilities as they will not have a full metal jacket, with the 300 having a plastic back and the 700 having a matching plastic strip where the ariels are situated.
I would advise to but online as that way you have 7 working days to inspect your prime and decide to keep it or not which you are not guaranteed of in a shop. You need to keep all of the wrapping and if you are careful you can remove the internal plastic wrapping without causing any rips in it.
Another factor is that Asus have been dealing with updates in a timely manner and much more responsive with regard to updates than any other hardware firm I can think of...HTC and creative both come to mind even though htc are not the worst.
So I cannot tell you what to do but you might want to play with one for a week and then decide if it is for you or do you want to wait for updated ones in the future?
Good luck with whatever yu do
Andy
Oh and I forgot to mention that GPS is a washout but i have an android phone and a garmin for sat nav and do not envisage myself with a 10inch satnav in my old focus lol
This will cause a war here.
I expect demandarin pop up here praising Asus and Barry to counter argue him immediately LOL.
All I can say, I'm on the 6th one now which will be going back for WiFi speed drop and light bleed.
As it stands at the moment there are these categories:
Praisers: got tfp which they are happy with
Indifferent people: happy with whatever faults they have or don't realise that there is some fault.
Hopers: (me) keep getting **** ones but hope to find a golden one. (my hope is growing weak)
Haters: have/had Ttp, extremely unhappy with it, don't believe Asus is/will be delivering good product/service.
All in all, Asus needs to pull finger out of-you-know-what and start delivering consistent quality.
I'd say give it a go, but check thoroughly for faults.

Nah, how much does the same thing really need to be repeated? I've gotten as tired of typing it as you have reading it.
OP, yes, the 7.7 does fine with high profile video. The Note 10.1 will too. They both dumped Teg2 for a 1.4GHz Exynos chip. Here's a vid of the 7.7 playing HD video locally and online. If you get the 3G 7.7 it can also be used for GSM calling.
thanks for the reply guys... tbh wifi is my main concern coz my uni's wifi signal is bad enough i need it for the next couple of weeks as i have to read a lot of PDF that is one of the reason i ruled out 7.7. But with this price i think i should wait for the 300 or 700 lol

[Q] Honest Opinion: Should I wait?

I have an order for a Prime on Amazon, and I'm waiting for it to ship. At this point, would you wait for the TF700T (given all the potential hardware problems with the Prime) or just go for it. I know about the "technology gets better all the time stuff", but what would you do, TODAY, if you knew what you knew now.
wait. I have a prime and the dock I love it..but if you spent time waiting for say the TF700 who's to say that there won't be something better a little bit later down the road..
!!senseless sensation!!
I just got my second prime due to the HDMI out port dying on my first one, most likely because I dropped off the back of my couch. Both primes I have owned have been great no wifi problems or reboots. GPS is hit or miss but I think i read on these forums that a hardware fix is in the works. That being said. No way am I paying 100 bucks more for a plastic back and a slightly better screen. I don't need GPS to work full speed minus wifi on my tablet.....I have a phone for that...and like I said i never had wifi problems.
So my answer is i would not wait for the tf700....plus you never know what kinda problems they are going to have with that one....at least with the prime you know all the POTENTIAL issues and can deal with them.
Personally, I would wait a while. It sounds like ASUS is providing some kind of Hardware fix to Primes that are not working correctly, but parts are not available yet. That combined with the lack of stock almost anywhere leads me to believe that production of new units has been slowed/stopped. My guess is that they are using whatever stock they have remaining to primarily replace units that are being returned by customers.
Whether they are waiting to ramp up production with "the new hardware" or are winding down on the Prime altogether is unclear (at least to me). But it seems definite that "something" is up with the prime production.
I would wait to see what shakes out in the next couple of months unless you are desperate for a new tablet.
I wouldn't wait if I were you. In all honesty, the TF700 is not that much of a step up from the TF201, and in my opinion it is not worth the extra $100. The only reason that I would wait is if GPS a deal breaker for you (which I think most people have a hard time making this argument).
So its 50:50 up until now
i have to say, i wouldnt either. The prime is fantastic. In most cases the wifi issues (if there are any, in my case there are none) arent a problem in reality because youtube HD stuff wont interrupt to buffer, neither do high quality flash streams on the browser. And thats what counts in the end. IMHO.
So the infinity tab will be a great device as well, but there is much uncertainty about it still. No one knows the exact pricing, if there will be issues, if they will be in stock etcetc. With the prime you know what you get - and that is almost perfect. Pretend the prime is a wifi only device without gps btw. And then be happy that they implemented a GPS sensor anyway that works for positioning not for navigation.
Its such an awesome product giving you soo much for the price. And its stunningly beautiful and feels very premium. If manufacturers release plastic only products like samsung, people always cry for aluminum. On the prime its there.
And the incoming games!? We're gonna lol at infinity blade!
There is no good answer. The TF700 may be out next week and it may not be out until holiday season this year. It's also going to be more expensive. Basically is that screen worth an extra $100 and maybe several months of waiting?
Usually in the technology world you buy what you need or want at that time. Don't wait unless you know when something is being released otherwise you will never buy anything. Unless it is an Apple product the delay between the announcement and the time the actual product arrives on store shelves is usually many months. How much do you want to bet when the TF700 is released there will be a new tablet announced by someone that blows the TF700 away? That is the reality in the technology world.
Then there is the question of availability and QC. The Prime was released in mid December or something like that but not available for like a month and you had to either preorder or check websites every day to hopefully get one. And actually it is still like that and it's been a couple months. As for QC, well it is the same company so I am not sure why their QC will change. For all we know there will be QC issues with the TF700 as well. Screens seem to be a big issue with ASUS. I know since I had to return three primes due to screen issues. The original transformer had screen issues and a terrible dock battery issue that plagued early adopters for a long time.
I would say buy the Prime now. Have fun with it for many months. Once the TF700 is readily available and we know there are no QC issues go play with one in a store and see if it is worth selling your Prime. You will not be out much money if you go that route.
Go for it. I was in the same boat, but decided the extra money wasn't worth it.
The primary issues are WiFi and GPS. My GPS seems to grab sats and lock, but haven't really tried it on the road yet....but, not worried, because my Globasat Receiver BT359 works fine...so either way, I got GPS.
Wifi - all I care about is getting it to work about 2 rooms away from the router, and it also seems to work. The biggest issue for me was "ICS not permitting Ad-hoc network connections" with my smartphone (did not know that issue before I bought it) because that is my main source for internet when I travel. However, there is a fix on the board for that, so I can get a wifi connection no matter where I'm at.
So, even if GPS and WiFi turn out to be truly "flaky" when I really need it, I have the alternatives mentioned above and even buying a GPS receiver is cheaper than the $100.
The supposed improvement in screen resolution is not important unless you look at it through a magnifying glass. I doubt that the eye could really discern the difference
Lastly, They announced the prime coming out in October, then got pushed back, and they STILL aren't readily available. So, if they say the 700 is June release, I wouldn't expect to see it in the stores till Sept at the earliest...and ready supply....try Christmas.
Good luck,
Bob
PS....also remember, the people who post are the ones who have issues or "think" they have issues.....Some are real, some are due to lack of knowledge by the user. Remember, very few happy customers post and say "WOW". So, on any board, most operational questions are of the negative variety....and I'd also say again....A lot of that is the user
I'd say wait until the problems on the Prime get fixed or until the TF700T gets released. ASUS says there are only 1% of defective units. I'd say in my case is more like 100%. I bought/returned 4 Primes, they were all defective.
If you can wait for a tablet, I would wait. With the other android and an apple brands, newer asus tablets, and maybe a fix for the current prime coming out you will have more options to choose from. If you cant wait, buy a prime from a company that has a return window no questions asked and test it yourself.
Don't wait. I was in your position about 10 days ago and today I am happy I made the decision to buy.
My unit works fine (minus a bad firmware update that killed battery life), and it's beautiful. It's fast as hell and makes my **** feel huuuugggggeeeee having a quad core tablet.
The tf700 is barely an improvement for waiting and spending a hundred dollars more. The resolution increase will barely be noticeable - except on the hardware, which will likely be taking a beating from the screen. The transformer prime is the last tablet with an ips panel I will buy - waiting on future ips panels seems like a bad idea with the advancement of oled technology.
Looks like the TF300T just cleared the FCC, so maybe it won't take as long as I thought to get the TF700.
My real concern is that they are phasing out the Prime, which is why supplies are basically zero.

There a new thread every day about this. I know it's a real cool thing to be a thread starter but you are pushing down useful threads with this nonsense.

Every day the situation changes, so it makes sense that people are curious and that old threads won't still be relevant. I also see that every day, like clockwork, you scold or berate the poster like it's your job. What's more annoying, someone coming here advice seeking from other members, or the people that post just to post, without adding any real value. I've been a member since 2007, I know how XDA works.
"Pushing down useful threads" If you tell everyone who comes on here to just search anyway, who cares? 16 people offered thoughtful, relevant answers. You're the only one who had to insult the OP.

I would read this thread, seems like there is going to be new parts for the prime to improve wifi and GPS end of March. Maybe you should wait when it goes into effect in the production line.
Yeah, I'm usually the last one to wait, in fact I'm finally just now giving up on my viewsonic Gtab that I got right when it came out. It's tegra2, but stuck on froyo and even the best efforts of the devs on xda have resulted in a less than stellar ICS ROM. So, it's time to lay down some more money. I'm keeping my order at Amazon, and we'll just see which comes available first, the Prime or the TF700. Either way I'll be happy.
I think you should not wait.
1º No one knows when the Infinity will be for sale.
2º The improvement of screen is irrelevant for me;
3º The Infinity will not be smaller or lighter;
4º The Infinity will not be cheaper;
5º The Infinity will not be faster;
6º GPS should not be essential in a tablet and my Wifi is normal.
For me, the main improvement in the Infinity is the 3G and 4G option that the Prime do not have.
Anyone who prefer 3G/4G should wait.
For me, I am wait for an official firmware update on Prime that would enable connection with Ad Hoc networks, because I have Joiku software in my Nokia phone.

I on the other hand would not want the 3G. I currently pay for internet 3 times... (home internet and 2 unlimited data smartphone plans) so the last thing I want to do is to pay for another internet connection. I currently use my Thunderbolt to tether to the Prime (I use the Open Garden app) and it works great.
But for those who don't have a smartphone or don't want to tether from their phone to their tablet (which I don't know why you wouldn't) then it may be worth the wait.
Just get the prime! I love mine.. No issues part from gps but who needs that anyway.. And tbh why would u need a retina display on a 10.1" screen? Just don't see the point but that's my opinion

I wanted a tablet but didn't NEED one.
I went from potentially choosing a TF101, then maybe buying a Thrive until i heard about the Prime and then i pulled the trigger.
Buy what you think is best NOW cause 2 months from now it'll all change again.
I'm in the same boat.. but I heard June now for the Infinity series.. no way I'm waiting 4 months.. I'm sure 6 more new tablets will be out by then anyway..
Besides, the HD screen is about the only real benefit I'd be interested in, and honestly, I've been re-watching Battlestar Galactica in SD on my iPad 2 for the last week and I enjoy it just the same as if it was in HD.. I'd love to have the HD panel, but IMO, 4 months and $100 more just isn't worth it to me.
