Gps BUG: what it is + demo video ! ! ! - Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo, Pro

The Gps bug affects all stock Xperia 2011 phones.
The bug is simple, i explain it better then possible:
i turn on the Gps, wait for a fix, and start to navigate, after 5 minutes the signal drops for about 30 seconds, then works for other 5 minutes and again drops, other 5 minutes and drops, and again again again
every 5 minutes the gps drops without exceptions
now the datas collected in months of this problem:
1) this happens with traffic data OFF, background data OFF, absolutely no contact to the network at all, and offline app like Sygic, Navigon, Copilot etc
2) this not happen with Maps, also in offline mode, with a little portion of map downloaded before, and no data traffic
3) this not happen with Data enabled or Wifi enabled
4) this also not happen in Flight mode, and perhaps it is the most important information, so is not an hardware problem.
5) with the build 3.0.1.A.145 this didn't happen with data disabled !
Here a log of the bug by a user with the same problem.

What do we think about? :
for an unknown reason Sony firmware attempts to collect data every 5 minutes, also if the phone have data disabled. If don't find data, there is a drop out !!
Basically A-gps works always, even if data are disabled (i have no data traffic, my sim is disabled for internet connection), and this must not happen, because it causes a drop, its attempt is not silent for who have data OFF.
P.s OFF topic replies will not be tolerated more.
This thread is for share real problem, confirmed by Sony itself.
If you don't see the bug, is better for you, but please don't discridit these words.

I hope you tried at Arc forum. Maybe you will have better luck.
Just one question though, have you tried ICS beta? Maybe they solved problem there, so it will be available when ICS comes.

A SW developer on talk.sonymobile says:
"I can now confirm that my fix will be included in the ICS update.
Since the problem occurs because the phone tries to connect to a server to download satellite orbit information there are there are three things you can do until you've got the ICS update:
- Download assistance data while connected to a Wi-Fi network. You can do that by installing the "XtraData Downloader" from Android Market. While on a Wi-Fi network press the "Download XTRA data immediately" button. Do this right before leaving the network since the data is only usable for a limited amount of time.
- Make sure that the signal conditions are good while using the GPS receiver. It will only try to connect to the server until it has successfully decoded the information from the satellites. If using the GPS indoors or while driving in a city the satellite signals will be too weak, but if using the GPS in conditions where the signals are not obstructed by buildings the connection attempts should stop after about 20 minutes when the information has been decoded.
- Activate the data connection (I understand that this is probably not a reasonable solution for you)."
We just have to wait ICS

You don't need to. You can just ask someone who is still using stock ICS beta, for example in official xda thread for ICS beta: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1513172
Although I don't know if that bug is only on Neo or on Arc also, but I guess you know that

New demo video add in first post.
very embarassed bug, not expected from Sony
and also 6 months of wait
Inconceivable !!!

Not a problem I have... but then again, I use data. Because I can.
Have you searched this out? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1250226
As for "Sony" being somehow bad, I suggest you try the Taiwanese or Korean brands and then comment. The "bug" is largely a Google/Android issue. Apparently.
Why don't you simply sell the phone and buy something that actually suits your needs? I'm not being anyway sarcastic, but that's what I would do... particularly as you have had this problem for ages and received no insight from any of the umpteen posts you have made.

The bug is "by Sony" in this case, because was introduced with the new firmwares.
When i bought the phone the Gps worked perfectly, or i would have return the phone to my local shop.
Now change it with Samsung or Htc, have no sense, i will lose 50% of the real price, for a problem introduced by Sony itself !
When you say "the bug is an adroid issue", you mean this Gps bug, or the generic world of bugs?
I never saw a Gps bug like this in any android phone.
I searched that discussion, and i wait for a reply by Crypted, the author.

I don't understand the first part of your reply, sorry, but my english is not too colloquial.
About the second part, my firmware is absolutely stock and not rooted, without change in the system.
4.0.2.A.0.62. The bug was introduced since the first 4.0 firmware, with the old 3.0 one was perfect. But i don't want to downgrade, old firmwares weren't so good and there is a lack of important features.
Actually i use Sygic gps navigation.
I repeat it: is not an app problem, but a system one, a real bug.
My firmware is appropriate for my region, it is that correct.

[26.11.2008] WifiLocations v0.6 - Location based Wifi/BT/Ringer/user app's (de)activa

Hello All,\
I've made a little program called WifiLocations. It does a lot more then you might think, currently:
Current Version : V0.6
- Specify locations (based on GSM/UMTS Cell-ID) where WiFi will be activated automatically (and turned off when you leave)
- Specify locations where Bluetooth will be activated automatically (and turned off when you leave) or the otherway around (for headset/carkit usage).
- Specify locations where your ringer should be turned off or to vibrate (and back to previous state when you leave)
- Run a user-specified program when in specified location (and the choice of killing it when you leave).
- Name the Cell's so it's a little less confusing.
- Autostart on reboot-option
You don't need GPS for this!
CDMA cells are not supported, if you have info on how to read the ID's contact me.
If you think something doesn't work right, please let me know in this thread!
If you want to request a feature, please ask here!
I produced this because I use my incoming voip number a lot when I'm on wifi and I didn't want to activate wifi everytime I walk into a wifi-location (hence the name!). You can add your current location or walk around for 60seconds in your house to add all used GSM/UMTS-cellsites. (You have to add them both if your in a low 3g-signal area)
Well if you like it, let me know or even donate I've always wanted to go to st. Petersburg and trying to pay for a ticket by developing free software
Click on it to see the real status, this is just an image! Thanks!
Not for commercial use...
Free to distribute as long as it includes a link to my donation page along with the download link and a link to these forum pages.

Known Errors:
-WiFi in standby mode isn't functioning correctly I think
-Current Cell in mainform isn't updated until you restart
-Killing the app by pressing 'X' doesn't remove the trayicon
great tool thank you very much
Let me know if it works for you and what you what doesn't especially since I don't have a change myself to test is on other that gms/umts networks....
VERY NICE!!!
Just tried it, one thing, in the "walk around for 60 seconds" I did this, and it found another cell site, but it never added it.
Also, will it turn off the WIFI when out of range of the cell sites?
I will take a look at the 'non-adding-after-60-s' error tonight. And it should disable wifi when you're outside the reach of the gsm/umts-cell.
Actually it DID add it after I closed it down and re-started it, it now shows the other cell site.
thanks now I know what to fix when I get home! because the cell grabbing happens in another thread it can not directly change items on the gui thread! will fix this asap
Looks like a great utility.
Question : All it does is switch on the wifi? One still has to go through the login (for security enabled wifi) or other access means as defined at the particular hotspot ??
Btw, here is the site of a PC program that behaves more or less similarly. Perhaps useful for ideas ???
http://wifihopper.com/
Thanks
I think you're not getting the point of my application, it uses your Cell-position to activate your wifi. So you save battery and your voip protocol can be activated whenever you get to your home(or other)-cell... The wifi-profiles can be created through any wireless profile manager!

This should be solved now...
Nice app...I have a request that although probably not used by alot of folks it seems like a simple enhancement in "concept"....can you add the option to enable/disable BLUETOOTH instead of wifi based on location? I tether my phone to my house alot and use it as the internet feed...it would be nice if when I got to the home location it auto linked up with the pc and gave it internet without me having to think about it..the process seems the same. Am I off base?
Hmm upon further study it's not that simple...I'd also need to still run the internet sharing app...so perhaps not so simple.
@famewolf, I'll take a look at it. Never worked with bluetooth before, but I don't think it's much work.
I just created the application for personal use, because I tend to use voip a lot. I posted it here so so everybody could use it if they want to.
About the feature you request, you want bluetooth to be activated or does it need more functionality?
Well after thinking on it more it would take more than just activating bluetooth...would also need to be able to run a program when bluetooth was enabled so I'll just be thankful for what you provided. Your program will come in very handy when visiting my relatives...the cell reception in their house is crappy and I always end up enabling wifi and logging onto their router when in house to get email etc....will use your program to auto enable it.
Of use to people who "dabble" in voip....you can use fring and grandcentral to get a "free incoming" phone # that uses voip...and the new idialer allows grandcentral out calls as well....this would potentially works well with these apps...hmmm perhaps you SHOULD consider allowing the user to execute an app when wifi comes up or down so they can run whatever sip client they are using?
@famewolf, I think what you mention can be very interesting. I know that starting another app isn't a big problem. Working on the hiding of the form and autostarting now. Will add the functionality to start an app lateron.
Download new version, now includes working start-at-boot-mode and auto hiding the form. I want to change the complete set-up because it wasn't designed properly.... some other time.
I downloaded the current version; on my Sprint Touch Pro, it doesn't seem to see cell ids although it does seem able to turn on/off the wifi successfully.
good program. looks like the makings to the 'locale' program for android. If you added some volume profiles that would automatically switch you would be set. It would be nice to have my phone mute itself when i got to work and turn the volume back on when i left for home.
This program ist simply brilliant. If have been looking for something like this for a long time and programs like this one are the reason, I never got an Iphone.
One question though: your program seems to keep the Wifi connection alive all the time. Is it possible to add an option to have it running in powersave mode (i. e. power down in suspend mode)?
EDIT: Sorry to bother you. The behavior of the wifi energy save features has nothing to with your neat program. For some reason my wifi was hanging. It seems, I still have to get accustomed to my Touch HD (or the firmware bugs).
@twcook, I think that's because you're not on a gsm/umts network, I really don't have a clue how to solve that yet. I'll put it on the todolist. If anyone has information on how to get other that gsm/umts-cells let me know.
@nmeister, good one, put that on the todolist as well. But I won't be working on it a lot this weekend, got other plans.
tnx man, the program is perfectly working on tytn ii, its amazing. never need to touch comm manager for wifi...

Sprint Touch Pro GPS not working in the U.K. - shouldn't it?!

My friend is visiting home in the U.K. and he has a Sprint Touch Pro. Understandably, the phone does not work in England, but he fully expected the GPS to work, yet he cannot get it to work at all.
He has been trying with different GPS software, but can't get any indication the GPS is working...
Currently, he is at his parents' house and can surf just fine on their WiFi connection, but no GPS...
Thoughts?
Thanks!

That's a very good question, and one I haven't have the opportunity to test on my Touch Pro yet. I have iGo Nav-n-Go on my device. What if I were in the middle of nowhere in Kentucky or Indiana, with no cell signal - wouldn't I still be able to navigate? If not, that is a HUGE disappointment in the GPS capability. I thought A-GPS was one thing (triangulation from towers) and full-on GPS (with a dedicated GPS chip) communicated directly with satellites...
Matt
Alright, I disproved that theory about assisted GPS. Last night while driving home from hockey, I turned off my phone via the Com Manager, then opened up iGo Nav N Go and right away my GPS found where I was at, and the program worked flawlessly.

It didn't require the Sprint radio to be running at all. Granted, apps like Google Maps or Live Search would be ineffective with the radio turned off, but if you have a stand-alone GPS application such as TomTom, Nav N Go or something similar, then GPS should work just fine.
Obviously in the case of being in the U.K., it would require having the maps for that country, otherwise the stand-alone apps wouldn't be able to show you squat!
Matt
Why do people still thing these phones NEED data connections to get GPS fixes? They *can* use them to achieve a quicker fix but do not require it. Keep in mind, without a connection it might take a while to get a fix.
This has been proven many times... Actually, I personally had comm manager off on my phone on a plane, but the GPS on, watching the speed and altitude. I don't know if the airline would have liked that...
GG
edit* Certian GPS nav software will let you load the maps from other sources, googlemaps for instance will not.
Just heard back from my friend after he read my message about the success of my test. He said the main thing he's wanting to do is geotag photos, and the Touch Pro simply will not find a GPS signal with the camera app nor footprints. He's not even concerned about using a map application at this point (heck, it's his hometown!).
Not sure why he can't get a signal for geotagging purposes, but it's just not happening. What a drag...

Not, sure but the Crackberry Pearl user on my account gets data for a huge roaming rate over there. All her emails came through, and we all know the Pearl isnt a better phone, so maybe its his plan? Who knows. Sorry
I was in poland recently and also treyd to get tomtom with poland maps on it to get a fix, on my sprint touch pro with agps disabled...
BUT WITH NO LUCK!!!!
I treyd everything like turning off phone in comm manager and so but it didnt work.
Anyone know if you can actually make the phone NOT need a data connection to use the GPS??? I had an Alltel Touch Pro with Tomtom that NEVER needed a data connection to get a lock but now that Im with Sprint and have a Sprint Touch Pro, Im using the same version of Tomtom with the same map and installed it the same way but no matter what, it ALWAYS want to use a data connection. Anyonw have a clue why?? I tried turning my radio off and it could not get a lock for about a half hour. As soon as I turned the radio back on it got a lock within seconds. Any ideas. Thanks.

[Q] GPS module disabled or broken?

Hi.
About three weeks ago the gps on my galaxy s2 stopped working. I have been running CM9 nightlies since about march with no issues before this.
This isn't a matter of not locking properly, and the internal gps is set properly in settings. It simply seems like the phone cannot communicate with the GPS modal. No GPS symbol appears in the status bar. I do most of my testing in the GPS Toolbox app.
Is there a way to tell if this is a software issue or a hardware issue.
any advice would be useful.
Back to stock firmware in the first instance. If you have the same problem running stock, then chances are it's a hardware issue.

Did this a while back. No change, exact same behaviour. Is there some way i can test to be 100% sure it is a hardware failure?
your last chance is to change the modem , try diffrent modems , and give your gps some time too be locked , also try some gps patches " you will find alot around here "
run your test in avery very clean sky to be sure it is ahardware fault , thats what i can tell you
btw : run the test with gps status app , i know it very well , and it will download the agps data auto while you are connected to the internet , and will provide with alot of usefull info , and have alot of settings

I am almost 100% sure that your modem had no control over the gps, only the data it downloads to help clock sync to the gps signal. I don't need to be outside to test this, It's not a gps locking issue, its a gps working at all issue.
I switched back to an old modem that it use to work on anyway, no luck.
1) You are absolutely correct re: modem having nothing to do with GPS ;-)
2) I doubt there's any way that you as a phone user (as opposed to someone who is used to tinkering with the hardware/fixes them for a living) can test definitively for a hardware problem so far as GPS is concerned. Honestly, you've tried everything a user could possibly try to rule out a hardware problem (unless it's something really obvious we're both missing here).
Me, I'd send it in for warranty service. Out of warranty/warranty service too hard to organise ? Take it to a mobile repair shop & explain exactly what the problem is & exactly what you've been doing with the phone up until now (they don't care you've been running non-stock firmware as it's not a warranty job; the few mobile techs I've met run non-stock firmware on their phones).

Yep, There is a place I know that i will probably take the phone too. Just trying to make sure I am not missing something stupid here.
Yep that's what I've been sitting here going thru in my head in the 20 minutes since my last post. I can't find anything obvious other than maybe do a completely clean install of stock ?
That is format cache, data, system, & internal sd card in CWM, then flash stock in Odin then see what happens. Don't restore anything at all until you've tested the GPS with a 'clean' setup. Obviously install GPS Status from Google Play to test it out.
I know you did a wipe/factory reset when you tried stock, which would have taken care of anything that may have been left behind from CM9 or whatever.
Unfortunately that's all I got :-( Hope you've been able to think of something in the interim we might have missed.

Hi,
Sorry for digging those thread out. i have exact the same issue with my I9100.
The GPS icon will not show up once launching an gps app.
Also returned to a stock firmware, same issue.
I have checked the antenna connection between the 2 boards and this is fine.
What was your solution?
Thanks a lot,

It was a hardware issue. Repair guys replaced the mainboard and all was well.
I had to send it to them twice as nothing showed up on their debug and they sent it straight back. Give them specific instructions to try and actually use the GPS so they catch the problem.

Micromax Canvas HD GPS issue fixed

I never used GPS much as I was pretty happy with the Google's location service. But I have read a lot about people facing issues with GPS on Canvas HD and thought, Why not give it a try! So here is the solution
The issue first
1. I keep waiting and waiting, but it shows "Searching for GPS"
2. What do do now?
Here are the steps:
a. Go to settings
b. Under settings, go to Location access
c. Under location access, see if 'GPS sattelites' - The option is checked
d. Click on 'GPS Satellites'
e. You will see something like this
f. If 'GPS EPO assistance' is unchecked, Check it.

I am on StarkHD 3.5. GPS was ok and was fixing fine at some extent. Sometimes slow. But after this setting, even I got bit fast gps lock. Even indoors some sattelites were seen, but not locked. It was not possible before. I get full lock near window now.
Thanks a lot pal.
PS: Lolz! You blocked your area in Google Map screenshot, but hey you forgot to block your co-ordinates and that reveals your exact location. he he

I'm on Naturewiz HD and facing problem with GPS. Used GPS Status tool. It did something, but still there was no GPS lock. After that I just went to my balcony (from where sky is visible) and got a GPS lock almost instantaneously.
a doubt
Don't know if I should even post it here.. but since we're talking about GPS and stuff.. I am currently using Google maps and I want to set my home location on of so I can instantly use it whenever I want. However, when I turn my GPS on and set my current location as home, it takes the address of that place and fill it out for me and when looking at that address on map its nowhere near my home so I starred the exact location of my home on map but I don't know how to set it as home. Has anybody faced this issue? I have a feeling if I can get that starred location's latitude position I'll be able to set it as my home and it will be accurate.. am I wrong?
Please if anybody has faced this issue or knows a workaround that guide me. Thanks coz I really wanna use that feature as I travel a lot.

Yes, you are right, you should not post it here. Go in help and troubleshooting section. You problem is about location application and not gps fix. Help everyone to save their valuable time. :silly:

Question No WiFi after February update!

I know there's a topic for February update, but I want to address wifi issue in a separate one, so we could easily maybe find a solution.
I have tried so far to clear network settings with no success at all. Then rebooted phone, wifi came back, but when phone gets to sleep (screen lock), wifi will turn off and no way to turn back.
Then from Google Pixel 6 telegram group was a suggestion to stop Adaptive Connectivity, so I stopped it, rebooted phone, but at some moment wifi was gone once again and you can't turn it on.
Please reply here with some tricks that we want to try to fix the problem. I don't want to root or modify phone, but if there's no other option - I will do it.

If you haven't unlocked your bootloader, your options are very limited. You could try sideloading the OTA and see if that helps.
For an unlocked bootloader I would suggest simply reflashing the baseband image, but that isn't possible if the bootloader is locked.
Have you tried clearing cache in the recovery environment?

There's no wipe cache in stock Recovery.

I'm sorry, I am so new to P6 that I didn't know this. I saw that the P6 takes some effort to get into stock recovery (wow! power off, boot with volume down and power keys, freak out a bit at the sick robot image, then use keys to scroll to recovery mode). I just assumed there would be a wipe cache in the wipe data/reset option. I've never seen a phone without that option, as far as I can remember. What a weird thing to omit!
Did you try doing it from the Settings app? (Storage... free up space... cleaning... junk). On past phones I've had less success doing it from this kind of menu than from doing it from recovery, but worth a try.
I won't reset my phone. It's my daily driver and I have read already an article that reset doesn't clear the issue.

I haven't seen any workarounds for this bug as of yet. Let's hope Google gets on it. Maybe a Carrier Services update or something will fix it. Btw, I don't have this problem (knock on wood).
I only have it installed for 9h but so far is working fine for me.

You might have hit on something. After the update I still hadn't installed the latest beta carrier services which was 91. 424 or something. Right after I updated I had 3 updates CS being one of then to 92.x. They wouldn't install so I was like wtf all 3 pending. Rebooted nothing. Then I turned off wifi and all updated fine. Turned back on wifi and no problems since. I didn't test the wifi but now it seems reasonable that was the culprit. Can't be sure though.
My WiFi Mac address is unavailable, I would guess that's the reason I can't turn on wifi.
definitely experiencing wifi issues. would reboot device, wifi would need to be turned on, then it connects to my wifi and works fine, put the phone down and come back in a couple of minutes, its no longer connected to the wifi and I can't even turn wifi on. updated carrier services like bobby did and it's still behaving the same. I did the feature update before the security update and wasn't having this issue so this is directly tied to the security update. Pixel 6 128GB bought through Google, so which image do I downgrade to? I see there were two Nov 2021 global updates

November? If you're going to downgrade why not use the January one, why go that far back?
For me wifi works after network reset yesterday but i never had the described problem that wifi turns off when phone is locked and can not be turned back on. Instead of that yesterday i noticed that when phone locks at some point in time it does not have internet anymore despite the fact that it shows to be connected to wifi. Turn off and on wifi fixed it for some time. I did network reset yesterday afternoon and have not seen this behavior since that time.
I am having hotspot issues. I setup the pixel 6 as a hotspot for my other devices to use on the go, it worked for two days since I updated the device, but today suddenly none of my other devices can connect to the hotspot (the hotspot is discovered and the other devices can connect to it, but cannot access internet)

I did network reset 10 times maybe already and still no Wi-Fi after that. Only option is to reboot phone, but fix is for some minutes until phone get locked.
If I put screen time out to 10 minutes, then Wi-Fi is working just fine. At some point I touch the phone and another 10 minutes Wi-Fi is OK. If I change time out to my default 30 seconds, then I have no Wi-Fi in 1-2 minutes...
To everybody having problems with wifi - did you try disabling adaptive connectivity?

That doesn't help as several users in the reddit + google threads confirmed, neither does a factory reset which Google still likes to recommend
I too have no wifi and this is a major problem for me.
Not rooted yet. How do I revert to January?

Only one way. Full wipe of device, by unlocking the bootloader. And only if it's unlockable. Or turn off wifi and wait for the fix.
