A question battery - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi to all the forum.
I got a question about how battery work.
I know in some battery there are a circuit who provide in all data about battery.
For working we bought 10 Samsung Galaxy Wonder GT-8150, all this devices works properly but one of this 10 has got a big problem!
When the device is connected by USB the device work but when do you unplug the smartphone it turn off and the low battery icon appears.
You can charge it at 100% and u will have the same problem but is not the normal low battery icon because a little thermometer blink (A little sub-question: what it means ?)
We try to change battery and both of device works! It is strange ?
I read on the net about a problem in microusb-port,a kind of short-circuit but on the Galaxy SII.
Well, my question is: there is a sort of serial number on battery ? how work the file it contains the battery stat ?
Why the damaged smartphone with another battery working good, also the smartphone where i put the "damanged" battery working good ?
Thank you to all!

1°) Clean the battery contact and check the battery spring contacts in the phone.
2°) I will recommand to record the % charge, voltage and temperature while charging. This will help you to find which is wrong. I use Battery Monitor widget ( free version is O.K.) but you may find many others applications on the market.
When I have to make an analysis on a battery problem, I import the recorded file into an Excel sheet.

[Q]-x10Mini- Battery percentage goes down by 10% on every restart

I am facing a peculiar problem since last few months.
On every Restart of the phone, the battery goes down by atleast 8-10% sometimes as much as by 15-20%. But this is not real drainage as on the reduced percentage the phone stays for long as it would have taken to drain in real usage.
I can't recollect from exactly when this happened but its not less than four five months. In the meantime I have changed many ROMs, calibrated battery with "Battery Calibrator" many a times, deleted batterystats from CWM when the position seemed to improve a bit. But after two or three restarts the same problem comes back. I am now on Mini CM7 ROM latest version by nAa.
I think its a calibration problem or is it time to change the battery?
Any similar eperience / opinion on this / help to rectify this. BTW I searched / googled for this topic but not found any. In fact I found a thread in some other forum for some other device where battery increases by 10% on every restart (Great thing is't it?)
Expecting some positive reply

Try to clean battery history (xRecovery/CWM -> Advanced Settings -> Clean Batery History) or use Battery Calibrator, found for free on market. The app has the instructions.
Either that or you could use a root explorer to delete the batterystats.bin file in data - system
Try to fully charge the phone first though then delete the batterystats file then unplug and let the phone fully discharge the battery, this should totally refresh the battery statistics that the phone reads

Thanks to both of you . I have tried similar solution. Still then I will try them again.
ok i have a x10 mini with mini cm 2.2.1 and nAa v14 kernel
if i restart i gain 10-15% more battery
it seems that if i charge it from usb i get better readings but if i use the house charger ( a iphone charger ) it charges quicker but battery stats are way off
did everything wipe battery stats , delete batterystats.bin , charge on or off etc

[Q] Battery broken or software problem?

Dear XDA-devs,
I have some problems with my galaxy S2, the major one is the battery lifetime.
When using the device, it drains superfast. I can not use the device for even 6 hours.
Because I can't afford to buy a new device I am looking for an solution.
I thought that it's a software problem and flashed supernexus rom but the drain is still there.
The overcharging ( 0% to 100% then taking battery out, turning off device and charging again) had no effect.
Battery drain (from marketplace) logs changes of battery status.
The log attached is a disaster.
So my question to you: How to track and solve the problem?
Thanks in advance,
Alex
I think its the kernel problem. Keep ur phone clean from unwanted apps which run in background, stop unwanted services such as wifi, lower the brightness, keep ur phone uc/uv as much as possible, try to be on stock rom as much as possible, increase the screen timeout and clean the battery. Thats all i can recommend

I dont understand the language in the attached pic, so thats not much help. All I can suggest are the usual suspects for battery drain.
Install CPU spy to check the various states in which the phone runs. Is it going into deep sleep like it should? If its not, thats your problem right there
Another thing to do is install Better Battery Stats (search the forum for the thread) and use that to check for unnecessary wakelocks. Additionally, I don't think what you mentioned (overcharging) is a way of calibrating your battery..although I could be wrong there.Instead you can use any battery calibration app, or if on siyah or dorimanx kernel, use the 'reset fuel guage chip' option in ExTweaks. else there are threads about calibrating your battery without the use of an app.
Or if none of the above works, you probably just need a new battery. Definitely not a new phone

Dear Alex,
have a look here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
It is BetterBatteryStats app thread.
BBS app is very useful to examine the battery stats and find wakelocks (prevent the phone from entering into deepsleep state) and alarms (activate the phone when in deepsleep state).
You can examine the BBS log yourself or just post your log and stat files to this thread to be checked by the "experts".
Good luck !

Hi HAXTREME,
thank your for the reply, the app shows the time when the battery decreases by 1%.
As you can see it loses 10% in some minutes ..
I will install the app the other poster mentioned and post results here..
thank you both.
// edit
although the wakesleeps could be a problem I would like to know why I can't use the phone permanently for some hours ..
as I remember this was possible when I bought it
Stats after tracking
Hello guys,
I have tracked the battery stats during 2 days now and it would be great if you could take a look.
Do you see something suspecious?
Do you need more information I can provide?
Regards,
Alex

At the very top of your dump file you attached, it says:
Statistic Type: (3) Since Unplugged
Since 1 h 3 m 55 s
You need to let it run for longer than this after unplugging. BBS will reset stats and start a new dump file when you unplug the phone.

[Q] Battery drains without any normal or background activity

Hi
I searched the web and also on Xda but I could not find an answer to the problem I got. I want to know if anybody has the same problem as I have. Firstly I want to clarify that I am NOT talking about a normal battery drainage caused by background apps, foreground apps, enabled wifi, bluetooth, google background activities, synchronisation, facebook, google location settings, any antivirus app or something of that kind. There are plenty of threads about that and google search is full of this topic. I am talking about something else when it comes to sudden and quick battery drainage.
It already happened to me a couple of times when I use the built in projector of my phone (samsung galaxy beam). So I watch a movie on the projector and it takes let say.. around 30 percent of my battery life. After I turn the projector off, close all foreground and background activities I wait like a minute or 2 and the battery status drops from lets say 28 to 20. This is normal as the battery status somehow needs some time to get "updated". So after every single fore- and background activity is closed and I got 20% battery left I go to bed. Then in the morning I look at my phone and its dead meaning the battery dropped to 0 causing the phone to turn off. And thats not normal for me. (I do hear the sound of very low battery in the early morning meaning it doesnt turn off within 1 hour which would mean faulty battery) First I was thinking that this problem might be caused by previously overheating the battery but I checked the temperature and here all is fine. Also both batteries are not too old and still work normally (beside the described problem). I may add that using the projector itself is not an "extreme" usage of the battery. When I use the projector, play an HD android game connected to my ps3 controller ...that is a different story.
So my question is what could cause this rapid battery percentage drop even tho the phone has no activity at all and sleeps. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it does not tho..If I would not use the projector then I loose around 2-3 percent overnight, if I use it then I sometimes loose 20% without doing anything. And thats not normal. I understand that a lot of people dont have my phone, but I still would like to know if anybody had the same issue on his phone after "heavy" usage? Maybe android somehow thinks that there is still activity even tho there isn´t. Like a virtual activity making the battery think its in use and therefore draining it. Any thoughts on that?

I wrote that already in the post. Its the Samsung Galaxy Beam.
ya, even my xperia m with JB 4.3 drains heavily.
This is a case where actual current measurements will narrow things down.
It could be that when you turn off the projector, there is still some hardware drain going on.
It could also be that the last "20%" of your battery is really only 1%.
For current measurement, see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2487055
this can be due to some defect with ur battery or with the charger that you are using, you can rule this out may be by trying different charger and also changing the battery to rule out the battery defect. what @Renate NST say could also be the issue.
Problem solved
Ok. Just a little heads up. I managed to solve the problem. Thanks for the replies. This is how I solved it:
1. I first ran this app ( Battery Life Repair) to check for any faults in the battery itself https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.BoshBashStudios.batterydoctorrepair
2. Then I installed this app (BatteryCalibration): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nema.batterycalibration and followed the advise as written on the app (regarding full charge and discharge- I discharged it until the phone switched off). Find the XDA thread of this app here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1024867
3. After I watched a movie on the phones projector I restarted the phone and it stopped from draining the battery until 0 and went back to a normal discharging state
So with a bit of heavier battery usage (watching a movie on the projector) the phone or battery somehow memorized this usage, and thought it has to continue in this state even after I ended the movie and turned the projector off. But the above 3 actions solved my problem. Its important to mention that you will still loose some battery life as you need to restart the phone. But this is obviously way better than having the battery run down to 0% for a virtual usage... :good:
PS: If you still got problems with ur battery you might want to replace it or change your charger...

[Q] Hardware problem causing battery issues?

Hi,
Just ask for any other information, I'm bound to not remember to provide everything Have had this i9100 for about 30 months. No battery issues for the first two years but plenty in the past six months.
Phone would switch off suddenly (no low battery warnings) or go black / unresponsive and super-hot. Replaced the battery and after about 2 months the new battery (probably not original) was literally bent and mis-shapen. Bought a genuine (I hope) Samsung battery and installed CyanogenMod and still seeing hard power-offs when they wouldn't be expected.
See attached for this morning. Phone unplugged after charging (via USB) all night. Attempted to use Apollo and it wouldn't work so didn't even use the phone on the bus. Clearing data for Apollo after arriving at office and that is working again now. Made one long phone call before starting work and towards the end of that phone call just dropped. When arrived into the office plugged back into USB again.
Why did it power off at 70% and why wouldn't it turn on again even though after being plugged in and charged for 5 minutes it starts up at 40%?
What do you think? Is this a hardware issue and I have to give up on the phone
Does near camera get hot ? it shows media taking 21% which I assume it is not normal .
also we need to know about Rom version and recovery version .
Media scanner is the process that scans every folder and file so that if you copied or downloaded a .mp3 file it shows on your library . However for many reasons this can go wrong . Do you have folders with many files ? (talking in thousands) ... for example apps like maverick can download many thousand mapTiles that saves on internalSD or ex ... Then MediaScanner everytime needs to go trough all those many thousand files and that burns cpu/battery ...
if so try http://geeknizer.com/fix-android-media-server-scanner-sdcard-cpu-battery-drain/
other than that battery can go bad which is easily replaceable .
Attached screenshot from this morning. Notice how it drops to zero at a point. The phone switches off even though the battery isn't exhausted.
Near camera not getting hot. Not sure whether media 21% was normal or not, that morning only 30%+ of battery used when the hard switch-off event happened.
ROM is CyanogenMod 10.1.3-i9100 (Sept 23rd) and recovery is CWM v6.0.3.6
No folders with many files. Use the phone lightly really. A few MP3s, email, phone calls, general browsing, occasionally Skype.
Real question is why the drop from almost 70% battery to zero, as shown on last weeks and this mornings screenshots?
Battery is brand new, unlikely to be the problem.
Will install a battery drain app and study closer.

The most advanced app I can think of is battery monitor widget pro which can show you energy flow in mA per ( by default every 10min ) . A stock i9100 has a 1650 mA .However I don't think it can explain dropping in energy like that . No battery saving app will resolve this issue . There are some battery calibration apps around . I don't know what they exactly do ...
I have an i9100 . There has been some " Episodes " when I shut down , remove the battery and re-enter , turn on and see unexpected drops in the juice but the most extreme was dropping from 38 to 15 . Never when running android .
When phone gets superhot for not reason it sure is using alot amount of battery . I would suggest a factory reset or changing rom/recovery .
Plus I would like to know do you experience a crash ( after going dark you simply turn on the device again ) or drain battery ( which your device wont turn on until its in charge for a few seconds/minutes ) .
If everything fails I would be suspicious about mainboard .
----------------------------
On a second Look I suspect the gap you are seeing in the battery is a state when you experience a crash which loads the cpu that uses juice enough that android is running to record the gap but not functional enough to respond which result in something like the image above . I don't believe the battery can go from 70 to 0 then when you connect to a charging point you gain 50-ish % battery in a jiffie . When I think back I can say I had battery stats like that and my phone still is without issues ...
It's not getting super-hot any more. I think that was down to an old battery. What confused matters somewhat was it still got super-hot with the replacement (non-genuine) battery, which after a month or two was actually buckled out of shape. The phone was running Samsung ROM then.
Since then, have installed CyanogenMod and genuine Samsung battery and it's better behaved in general. Just these occasional crashes or whatever they are.
When it goes black, it won't turn on again, until after the phone is plugged in for a minute or two. Then it will turn on and report much higher than zero battery. It could still be some kind of looping crash where the screen is black but Android is still running. That wouldn't explain why it recovers when plugged back in though.
Since these issues are across 3 different batteries and 2 different ROMs, I'm tending to suspect that mainboard myself. And I don't trust any of the high-street phone repair places. They have two options for me: (1) sell me knock-off batteries, (2) replace mainboard.
The phone is still functional to an extent, it's just I can't rely on it. It's good for a half-day, after that I can out and about uncontactable and unable to take a snap photo or whatever on demand. Annoying!

[Q] bad battery on z2

Hi Friends
My battery is damaged
The installation program is not harmful.
Gps & sync is off
But it consumes a lot of battery
All the recipes I've done to reduce battery consumption but is unaffected
I had to flash my rom again
I bought this phone for about a month.
Early buy this mobile battery was very good, and about two days once it was connected to the charger
It is very bad battery
I charge it every day 2 to 3 times
Is it hardware problem?
All procedures are done to reduce battery consumption.
But the problem is not solved
Read wrong , sry Mod Delete please.
Try a clean install, if the problem still occurs, get your phone serviced.
