[Q] Galaxy S2 issues... - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is my second Galaxy S2...first one had a defective screen (white spot on gray colors), now I'm having issues with this one...
While playing games (any game pretty much), randomly the game "reloads" (as if I went back to the home-screen and then returned to the game, which in some cases pauses the game after the reload but in others the games just close themselves).
I'll be honest, after all the good things I've heard about this device I'm really confused how did I end up with 2 phones with issues this big (both were brand new, though the first one was on the store's display-shelf) =/
What I've tried:
Resetting the factory settings
Updating to the latest ROM available for my area (2.3.5 Vodafone Spain)
Switching to a newer ROM (2.3.6 Open Germany)
Problem still exists.
Could this be a battery problem? (the battery I have is still from the first phone so I can assume it's defective aswell, but wouldn't that restart the phone itself rather than cause the issues I'm having?) That also crossed my mind when once a battery widget I use dropped 20% during a phone restart...
Any ideas? Something I should try?
I'm really desperate with this issue since "no gaming" on this phone pretty much makes it useless...
Thanks in advance for any replies.

You have to change the screen timeout delay and or any timeout delays example your screen pattern or password. This is not a battery problem. The battery dropping 20% you obviously changed the current battery in the phone to a different 1. If you have to do this just clear the battery stats in CWM.
EDIT: There is nothing wrong with your phone its working perfectly

You're so right - absoluetly pointless device without games. Anyone would think it's a phone if we weren't sure - thanks for the clarification.
I'm going to buy a DS for my telephone needs.

Tried changing the screen timeout today from 30 seconds to 1 minute, the problem still remains (no passwords/patterns are in use), while playing Asphalt 6 it randomly re-loaded again.
Just to make sure you didn't get the wrong idea, the issue is not that the display turns off (phone lock), the issue is while it's in use.
Did I miss doing something in your instructions?
CWM = clockworkmod? Doesn't that require rooting the phone? (mine is unrooted, only used Samsung official ROMs on it)
Can you give me the steps needed to clear the battery stat? (unless it's displayed right on the menu, then I won't need "tutorials" o.o )
Thanks in advance.

People don't buy a 450€ phone just for calls or internet. Phones were good enough for calls/internet/videos/photos 4 years ago.

[Q]My s2 powered off it self

the phone powered off it self until i pressed the power button to turn on again. i noticed this often happened when i put in my pocket for a while. but when i put it on table over night it didn't happen.
roms that i tried that had the same problem:
batista 3.7++
lightening 3+,6+
cognition 1.4+
apps that i tried uninstalled but no avail:
-setcpu
-daemon control(batista rom)
-juice defender
is it due to motherboard issue? appreciate your advice. thanks.
have u tired wiping data and dalvik cache before installing any rom?

thanks, yes, i in fact wiped all and even install stock rom before any mod roms. and i also changed few kernels(stock, nipo, CF..)but still the same..
now trying to use kh4 stock rom and see..
So the this issue s only occurring when the phone is in your pocket and never when out of your pocket.
this happens to my Phone as well.. its kinda random...
sometimes when am listening to music and sometimes when its just on standby
for example it just restarted which reminded me to search for this error...
few days ago it was on standby and had shut itself down and the battery was completely drained after 5 hours without anything on.

yes, found it only happens when putting in my pocket. when charging over night or putting on my work desk, it didn't happen.
and yes, it happened few times when it turned off it self, it lost about 10% to 20% battery in just few minutes... the phone was warm when it happened. that was why i took out to check and found it already powered off..

all happened to shut down it self. so i guess it is not rom issue..
I would try a stock ROM for a week, just to be safe (no apps/tweaks/kernel, etc., really stock). I'm pretty sure a recent stock ROM will not give you issues, I would not worry about the hardware.

thanks for your advice, will try stock rom then
Ya, do that... just to see what is going on.
More on the technical side, the screen needs minimum 500Mhz to get out of Sleep Mode. Some custom Rom's use a low voltage or "underclock" feature that reduces the power consumption but also the number of CPU steps. That is what makes your phone crash and reboot randomly.
Once you put the stock ROM, do a sdcard wipe (if you use one), just to be safe. It should take several hours, so do it over the night. Personally I would not use an external sdcard during the one week test, just be sure.
You could also have a RAM (hardware) issue, ya. But 99% of the time is related to software. Bad memory degrades fast so you will see your random reboots pop at a faster frequency. If you did all the above and still experience random reboots, run adb logcat to see what is going on at that specific moment. If you get error codes like:
Code:
code 1 (SEGV_MAPERR), fault addr 00000000
you are dealing with bad memory unfortunately and need to service your phone.

I also heard that some people had bad battery contacts on their S2. Clean them with some audio head tape cleaner and cotton swabs, than make sure the contacts are proper... it should eliminate this possibility. In a way, it makes sense since you move a lot with your phone in your pocket.

However, I have a feeling this is your problem, since the phone restarts in your pocket only. Don't smack it like the guy did, heh. Go easier, think like it is your girlfriend...
Just clean the battery contacts and make sure they touch properly.
is there a guide on how to install Stock ROM back on? cant find any...
how can i root my sgs2...?
it also happened to my phone. so i brought it back to the store where i purchased it and told them that it was shutting down randomly when i put it in my pocket. after 15 days of waiting i called them for follow up because they told me it will take 7-10 working days. they told me that the phone never shut down in the service center. what can i do about it? i don't know how to flash or root. this is my first android phone.
I have finally found a solution... installed XXKH3 FW stock, not rooted yet, and installed an application from the android market called Load Monitor
Code:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.landak.loadmon
and enabled only Add Notifications, only notify high load, autostart and only screen on... seems to do the job, no battery drainage and most of all NO SOD (Sleep Of Death) or restarts anymore
If you still have problems try checkin wake lock from the options of the app...
Hope it helps

The phone did not rebooted in their store because they did not move it, you have a bad battery contact that can be fixed easy.

[Q] Phone keeps shutting down

Hi guys.
My phone shuts down at random moments. I can boot it up again by holding the power button for about 10 seconds. Sometimes, not always, the phone feels hot and batterylife dropped. I have been struggling with this problem ever since i got this phone. I hoped to solve it with installing a new kernel and rom. I am now on Slimbean 3.1.0. The phone was initially on XLQ6 4.0.4. This didn't change anything, unfortunately.
I have also tried:
- removing external SD
- placing a new battery (which has no room to move, in case anyone suggests the battery might be moving)
- wiping caches
The strange thing is that my friend has bought his i9100 together with mine in the same order. He is also on XLQ6 and is experiencing the same issues. Less often than me, however.
My smalband is still on XLQ6. Is it possible that this causes my problems? Or is it more likely that my friend and me simply bought phones from a bad batch or something (hardware related)? I really don't want to send back my phone. That is my absolute last resort.
EDIT: Problem solved! Installing the application "Load Monitor" and enabling the "wake lock" function has done the trick. No more shutdowns or reboots!
Anyone?
2 devices with the same issue?
I'd be at the store where I bought it right now.
I will do that when I am absolutely sure that it is hardware related. However, if anyone has a potential solution I would really like to solve this issue myself.

Same with me. change from 4.0.4 WLPT to 4.0.4 WLPY but problem still presists.
Does anyone know if changing smalband (if that is possible?) could make a difference? Because that is the only similarity to the original state of my phone. A lot of AT&T users in the USA experienced the same problems also with 4.0.4. However, nobody can come up with a solution.

If it is heating near the camera, it's facing death soon.
If it is new and warranty isn't voided, why not flashing the carrier ROM and get a new one?

Because I don't like to lose my phone for a couple of weeks. And I prefer to fix these things myself. I have seen so many topics about this on XDA and Google. There must be a solution to it.
Is it possible that these problems are caused by my modem? That is the only unchanged thing since I have had this phone.
I might have found a possible solution. I've read something on a Dutch forum about sim-cards causing these issues. So I have placed a new sim-card and the problem hasn't appeared in the last 3 days. Before that, the problem was occuring about 3-6 times in one day. It's too early to say this has solved my problem, but it definitely made a difference so far. If it keeps functioning perfectly for the next couple of days I will close this topic.
Symptoms were merely reduced. Phone still shuts down approximately each 2 days. Much better than it was before though. Why would a sim-card change reduce, but not solve the problem? This is starting to hurt my brain.

You may experience sleep of death. What WiFi chipset do you have? I had the same issue on a Murata Wi-Fi chipset.
Yup, Murata chipset. I've googled some more on SoD. I have now installed an app called "Load Monitor" and enabled Wake Lock in preferences. This should prevent the phone from going into deep sleep, apparantly.
Some portugal carrier had a problem with lte sim card or something like that.
I really don't see how a sim card can actually mess with a phone.
Maybe the enabling of some features screws it up.

In my case Samsung Service Team replaced the motherboard. My new MB has a Samsung Electronics wifi chipset. Two weeks now and no SoD.
That sounds good. However, ever since I have installed Load Monitor my phone runs fine. It drains approximately 40% of my entire battery, but it lasts easily until the end of the day.
But again, I shouldn't get too excited. Sim-card change seemed to work in the first few days as well.
Will be continued...
It has been over a week since I have installed Load Monitor. My phone hasn't shut down once. Problem appears to be solved! I hope more people will read this topic, because I have seen a lot of desperate people during my search to a solution.
The only disadvantage is the battery usage of the application. I now have approximately 40-50% at the end of the day instead of 60-70%.

[Q] Frustrated with desire x

I have posted before too on this issue of random reboots on desire x. It seems that i am the only one who have faced random reboot problem multiple times a day( varies between 1-10).
Now i would like to explain my issue in detail. These restarts DOES NOT occur when i am using the phone and running multitude of apps.
It only occurs when the phone is lying idle or when charging. Sometimes it reboots with white HTC screen while sometimes it gets stuck on a black screen( not switched off), in latter case i have to long press the power button to reboot it again. I can't even leave my phone alone while charging because it may crash which will result in missed calls and messages. The phone worked fine for first 4 months of purchase so may not be hardware related. I did upgrade my software twice from 1.18.401(factory) to 1.18.720 . the latest update was 1 week before the problem started.
I did not spent my $400(Indian price) on buying a buggy phone which bothers me and left me wondering why is it behaving so strangely.
The trouble shooting i performed in last month includes -
FACTORY RESETTING 5 TIMES
RUNNING PHONE WITHOUT SD CARD
RUNNING WITHOUT ANY APPS INSTALLED
PUTTING A WEDGE ALONG BATTERY TO ENSURE GOOD CONNECTION
SCRUBBING BATTERY AND PHONE CONTACTS
USING PHONE ON SEVERAL SIM CARDS
The problem may be network related, i don't know.
I am so disappointed in HTC. Is anybody here on software version 1.18.720 and not facing problem of reboots. If the update is faulty HTC should come up with another one.
I am on a sabbatical and 300 miles far from nearest service station for another month. It makes no sense to cover 300 miles and spend hell lotta money just to get this goddamned thing serviced. My last hopes are on Jelly Bean update to solve this problem which seems to take forever in coming to Asia. Is there any way to go back to 1.18.401 which came natively with my phone or some other way to resolve it.
Thank You
Get it replaced in Warranty. THE JB UPDATE WONT SOLVE THIS ISSUE. As it is specific to some users and not others, so its not a SOFTWARE issue. Its Hardware Fault. Get it replaced ASAP.

Let the warranty guys wonder why the issue happened. Its a costly thing, and warranty is EXACTLY for these type of situations. USE it.
Just save yourself the hassle and get it replaced like nexus suggested if you dig into what the causes are it will take a while because i tried to with an older htc device
Jb wont solve it, if its kinda similar to my problem described in your previous thread, motherboard change is the only option
thanx everybody . so that means i will live with this faulty device for sometime more till i go back to my work place n have access to service station

Thats awfuly bad luck... cant you send it via mail to service centre? In czech republic, there is this posibility (and we are around monkeys level here in whole smartphone situation).
I also have 720.3 but don't have such problem.
That's absolutely a hardware problem, take it to service center asap n dont wait for jb update.

YEA may be i can but that will take forever in India to get a proper response from main htc office/SC that is 3500 miles away. I will be in bangalore in may/june so will directly go the main service centre myself. Additionally I don't think they will replace the phone immediately so sending over mail will be useless if i get the same phone back with some temprory tweaking from their side.
I have 6 months of warranty left till November so if it goes bad let it be, my case will get stronger.
Can i flash my phone back to 1.18.420 myself without voiding warranty.?
In future i will think twice before going for HTC
i read somewhere in forums that android phones also need to cool down for sometime and periodic reboots or what they probably meant is switching off the phone for few mins is essential for long life of the phone but may be its just me

thats old desire trick called "put that brick into freezer", but it doesnt help in long term, youll have to cool it whole time youre using it
RANDOM REBOOTING devices with STOCK ROMs have FAULTY HARDWARE.
I phone shouldnt reboot on heat even with extreme use, and if it does, its faulty.
If you have custom roms or kernels, then it might be due to software issue, but on STOCK, its always HARDWARE.

You remember me about my old Mio A701 phone who started to behave strange for month or two... and after that the radio chip crashed...
Also it happend on my wife's LG phone that a little dirty (mettalic I think) on circuit inside right behind the power plug was able to freeze the phone and some times to restart.
So, if you tried all that things and the problem is not solved then it is a hardware problem! You have to disassemble the phone and repair it! Or go to service center (never I had).
its not a heat problem coz .i can use this device for prolonged sessions. only when the screen is off and network on it reboots
PS. when is jb coming to India
Try one more thing there is a app(don't know name) which can increase the minimum processor frequency
Try that out may be your CPU has very low min speed, don't sure about this but give it a try.
If that requires rooting then don't do it.

Extreme Lag with Galaxy S6 edge - TMobile

Hi all. I am hoping you guys an help as I am about to go back to my Nexus 6 at this point. I got a 64gb Galaxy S6 edge shipped to me at the end of March. On the first day I activated it I got the pop up that there was a software update so I did that. Every single review I've read talk to how the lag is almost gone, no overheating issues, etc. I stayed away from Samsung for so long because TouchWiz completely destroyed the Android experience for me, causing intense lag and slow down. If there is anything I can't stand when using a smartphone it is lag. Anyway, it seemed to work ok at first but I quickly noticed that it would get extremely hot for absolutely no reason at all. It will also completely lag out for no reason. For example. I'll go to unlock the phone from the lock screen and the animation will show it was swiped but it will just sit there for up to 20 seconds before doing anything. Often it just goes back to a black screen and I have to press the home button to try and unlock it again. If I try to use Google Maps many times it just hangs there for what seems like forever before it will move forward to actually start the navigation process. Navigating between music apps is painstakingly slow. I have powered off the unit multiple times, closed all open apps multiple times, etc and it doesn't seem to do anything. It will work better for a short time and then does it again. When I try to launch the camera it is supposed to launch super fast. At times I just sit there and wait. It is extremely frustrating. The longest I've had it sit there and freeze or lag has been close to a minute.
It also always seems like it is reallllllly warm, even after just a short while of using it. Again, it isn't every time I use it but more like 70% of the time. It could be resting in my pocket and get really hot, for example. It makes no sense.
Is my unit boned, or is this a common issue? I asked my developer friend and he suggested I turn off animations, etc. but why would I need to do this? I bought the phone with some crazy octa-core processor and tons of memory so it should breeze through all of this like nothing. My Nexus 6 almost never had any lag whatsoever and I would really like to think this phone is capable of more than what it is doing right now.
Any suggestions you guys have are more than welcome. I really like the phone but am at the point where if I can't get this awful lag/hanging issues fixed it is going on eBay =(.
Thanks for your time .

Quick answer factory reset see if that helps if not take it back to the store
I have no lag at all
I do have Lookout Mobile Security enabled, but it is only using like 7MB of ram. That wouldn't be causing this would it? I checked online at forum sites and it doesn't appear as though it would.
My first (S6 not edge) was like that. Turned into a handwarmer, got so hot it was literally burning hot! Took it back to the TMO store. Manager could not believe how hot the phone was, the box was warm and the phone inside was like a hot potato! Still frozen on the white TMobile splash screen from where it locked and stayed for hours. The phone was never really right. Got it exchanged for an Edge and it has been problem free, hardware wise.
Sounds like you have a bad one.
The Nexus 6 is a good phone, was going to sell mine but I need it to work with Google-Fi.
As suggested above, I would try factory reset first. Mine is very responsive even in power savings mode. It's just fast. I leave animation on at the default 1x. Did you look to see which apps are running the CPU up?
before a factory reset, try to go into recovery mode and clear cache. I've found on the tmobile version that once i got into recovery mode it did something of a small update automatically (in reading the scripts) and that doing that and then clearing cache really helped my battery drain i was having- might fix your lag too.
Clearing cache and factory reset after the update stopped my lag.
The battery though, just sucks. I'm down to 35% in 6 hours with less than 30 minutes of use.
I'm missing my nexus 6 at the moment. I hope I didn't mess up buying this.

Guys I'm fairly certain this is just the typical 5.0.1 problem... I'm experiencing it too and factory wipes only fix temporarily.
Had same thing on my Moto X 2014 and went away with 5.1 update.

Hi there. Thanks for this tip. I went ahead and did this and it did a software update as soon as I went into recovery. I cleared out the cache as well and it seems to be much zippier now. What I have found with Samsung phones, though, is that usually they work fine for a few days and then end up going to hell. Thanks for your help and I will keep an eye on this. If it keeps ending up working poorly I will go back to the Nexus 6.

I really hope that's not the case since Samsung takes 10 times longer than any other OEM to update Android
Encountered a bit of lag again earlier. Cleared out cache again via recovery and resolved it. Definitely think I have a bum unit or something with this version of Android

I thought the main lollipop memory issue was tracked down to boot up animation and Touchwiz devices are not meant to have this, therefore the fix Google has made to stock devices has no bearing on Touchwiz. Basically the issues we have are Touchwiz related not Lollipop specific, though Samsung must be delighted as we all throw blame at Google it diverts blame.
One such bug is the*boot animation memory leak*bug which consumes greater amounts of memory during boot forcing the kernel to kill few process (might be core services as well) causing severe lags.*arter97*of XDA has found a work around for this issue and according to him*“the current Lollipop boot animation implementation does not releases the resources held to*playprevious frames”*which might be the root cause of the issue.
According to the developer’s research, almost all the devices (except for the Touchwiz based Samsung device) fall prey to this bug causing highly unstable UI.

Factory reset did it for me.

Smartphone Screen

Hi there everyone, hope someone can give me some explanation.
I will not ask about technical poblem, its more likely about common problem but I didnt find the answer, so the point is, is it okay for my smartphone screen is always on for hours? What I meant is always on for full screen on apps not samsung feature always on.
For example I'm a traveler so I use google maps etc for my direction guidance,my phone screen will always on while navigating for almost 2-3 hour if there's no problem on the way, if there's a poblem I will played some games or watching movies while waiting, that's a total of 5 hour screen time continously for my phone.
To sum up, is it okay for my phone screen is active for 5 hour running apps, games & watching movie continously? Btw I'm using Xiaomi Mi Mix2S. Any answer will really be appreciated, many thanks..

The main disadvantages of keeping your device on for hours is the battery drain problem and heating of device
This may reduce your processor speed by eating up the RAM's memory however if you clear cache/davlik cache once in a while it may not be an issue
You are also advised to factory reset after a period of few months to avoid any lag related issues
Talking about the hardware it may become an issue in the long run but as of now it will be working fine
Apart from these you may have health problem which are not discussed here being an Android forum
Hope my information was helpful:fingers-crossed:

Hi milkyway3
Battery drain problem is inevitable, however my device doesn't feel hot at all, Xiaomi had done a great job with their phone.
Bottom line is, I'm concern if my usage style to my phone can effect on the phone, such as the screen black out or the phone go died on me considering I'm often in remote area which will be a big trouble if my phone go died on me.
Well hopefully for now it will be working fine like you said:fingers-crossed:
Any other input will be highly appreciated, thanks & peace.

If by any means your phone screen gets black out then as per your usgae it would be most probably due to a software issue
In case of such an emergency you can always keep a pendrive handy with you and a zip file Firmware of your device in the pendrive thenafter if anything as such happens you can install your firmware back via a Custom Recovery and everything would be fine
You can Google search for how to install custom Recovery and stock firmware of your "device name"
I recommend you to try it out once or a few times so that when you get stuck up in an emergency you would be easily able to use it
Note: This will factory reset your device
But at least you will be saved from such an emergency

milkyway3
