[Q] Galaxy Nexus To The Note? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I've gone from the Dell Streak -> Galaxy Nexus and am now considering going back to a 5"+ screen.
Does anyone have any insight regarding this change? I really love ICS, which is why I'm hesitant to switch, but I miss all that extra screen real estate! Perhaps I'm better served waiting a few more months until devs get their hands on an official Note build of ICS. Thanks for any help you guys can give.

I have both! Ics is way better than gingerbread. But the note is a phenomenal device! There's no other device like it! Ics is supposed to be release for the note but I don't know when exactly.

Not for a long while.

That's why I also have a Galaxy Nexus, so i can get my ics fix while waiting

You'll hate it. It's terrible going back to GB after having had ICS. The hardware is fantastic, but they really need to get ICS out.

I got a guy that wants to trade me a brand new Galaxy Nexus for my Note. I'm so tempted because I had ICS on my Nexus S and loved it but I also really love the Note...

My friend has a nexus. .... What makes ics so great? Guess i dont really see it... I have custom rom and it is incredibly smooth so just dont know other then the browser what makes everyone so excited about it?

Basically the same situation I'm in. I had a Nexus S with factory ICS.
I'm basically giving them to the end of March to get ICS out (Not from ATT, I realize that won't happen, but a leak from Samsung or CM9 or something). If they don't, I'll probably trade/sell for a Galaxy Nexus, even though I like the Note's hardware more.

There's literally no aspect of the OS I can think of that wasn't drastically improved in ICS. Literally everything is better. One great example is the absolutely insane way they want you to mount as SD card in GB.
Unplug cable, go to menu > Wireless and networks > USB settings, press connect, plug cable in, Press connect again.
Seriously?

I miss my AOKP on my galaxy nexus I had on verizon, but with the deal I got I couldn't pass up the note. (they accidentally put me on a dumbphone ETF with Verizon and AT&T gave me all 3 of my family plan phones for %50, so the note was only $150) However much I enjoy my note, I miss ICS and the fluidity AOKP brought that android version. I cant wait for a CM9/AOKP/AXIOM/anything ICS Rom.

One of the reasons I like the Nexus is because I can use my T-mobile or my Red Pocket sim. I have the $30 plan with T-mobile and $60 Red Pocket plan...I love my Note..Wish I could have both..

Disagree completely. I just traded my Galaxy Nexus for a Note and couldn't be happier. ICS is great, but still has plenty of kinks to work out. Add to that lots of software needs to be updated and GB on the Note isn't so bad.

Couldn't agree more.
I too came from a device where I was running ICS and have absolutely zero complaints/difficulty reverting back to GB because the trade off is a much better device.
In the end, we're really debating a subjective issue so there's no true right or wrong, but one thing's for sure: If you're going from ICS back to GB, the device itself had better make up the difference in terms of user experience, and the Note's clearly got the goods to bridge this gap. Also, it's only a matter of time before the devs cook up some ICS ROMs that make this discussion moot anyway.

The biggest matter is not the software on this phone, but the physical attributes. After over a week with note, I just cannot get used to the size. Sure, the screen is beautifully massive and makes the Galaxy Nexus look like an iPhone but the Note is just uncomfortable for one handed use (im 6'1" and I CAN use it one handed no problem, its just uncomfortable). My main factors for going back to the Galaxy Nexus were getting my unlimited 4g LTE data plan back (for the fiance too) comfort-ability, and better reception (I literally live across the street from a Verizon tower getting 15-32mpbs download where as the Note on AT&T 4G LTE im at the very edge getting 2mpbs down on a tiered 3GB plan). Ill still certainly be jealous when ICS ROMs come out for the note, but for now ill just stick with AOKP and a spare battery with charger lol.

I hear that, and I said somewhere else on this forum that I love the Note "in spite" of its awkwardness and the funny looks/snide comments I get regarding its size, similar to what an owner of a Great Dane probably deals with each time he/she takes it for a walk down the street. lol
For me, it's just that the functionality of the device is so over the top awesome (based on my prior Android experience) that even the clear unweildiness of the device (is that a word!?!) can't scare me away.
But again, to each their own.

I just left the AT&T store with my new Note. I had the Nexus on Verizon. I love ICS, but the note is a really nice device, and I'm enjoying the speed increase on HSPA+ compared to Verizon 3B.C.
I plan on buying a GSM Nexus to have as a backup to my Note.

I come from a Galaxy Nexus and there's 2 major things that I miss :
1. The beautiful number of PPI on the Nexus screen.
2. The notificatiin light.
I also miss ics/AOKP but I'm not in a hurry to root the Note.

Planning to get AT&T S2?

Posted on another forum but was curious regarding XDA members.
are you guys planning on getting the ATT S2 come october 2nd even though the nexus prime is supposedly close? or is the S2 just not worth it at this point? no bashing (im actually contemplating on buying one myself).
I will be at the store when it opens on Oct 2. Even though we're getting it late it will still be a top 5 phone for the next year.

will wait for Note how big it is in real, and than decide. AT&T is little bit too late for me to be excited because I am using int. version since early June.

I plan on getting one. Even though it's already a few months old, I feel like it's one of the most "future proof" of current phones on the market right now.
Things like Exynos CPU/GPU, 1 GB ram, NFC, effectively maximum speed HSPA+... My Captivate runs quite comfortable at 1.3 GHz w/ Cyanogenmod and still beats the pants off of any stock Android device currently available in the States. That's 2+ versions of Android ahead of what it launched with (2.1 Eclair), and a 30% overclock of what the stock chip came with. By similar logic, the GS2 should last through Ice Cream Sandwich and beyond...
The Note looks awesome but if I wait for it then something better will be right around the corner, besides, been sitting on this upgrade since July

I thought the Note wasn't an actual phone. But meant to be something in between a phone and a tablet. I get why it's awesome. The display resolution.
But I'll be picking up the AT&T SGSII when it comes out. Can always sell it later when something much better is released.
I will be getting it on or close as possible to Oct. 2nd I have waited this long and learned my lesson. I WON'T be waiting for the next best phone from attention after this one, I will fork out the cash for an unbranded phone. Maybe the prime or SGS3 IN the near future

I'll be getting it on launch day for sure. I was debating on waiting for the Nexus announcement but the likelihood of at&t seeing a nexus device near launch is slim to none. I know there have been hints dropped about it launching as both cdma and gsm but there is no concrete evidence. So just going by history it will likely be a few months before at&t sees the prime.

Nexus Prime/iPhone 5 for me atm... but theres still a 10% chance that seeing the Att Attain in person could wow me into buying it but I highly doubt it. Don't like Att/Samsung giving Americans the middle finger by taking 6 months to bring it to the U.S.

LoL gotta admit had me laughing hard though
It's either buy this on release date or wait for the Nexus Prime or HTC Holiday/Raider 4G for me. I've been phoneless since March so I'm not sure that I want to wait much longer for such a trivial upgrade (SGSII -> Prime/Holiday).
What do you guys think?
Is there any trick or loopholes in att contract that we can exploit to get an early upgrade? Or is there any way like may be paying something around 100$ to get an early upgrade?

Because it has potential, higher resolution is a big thing which is the only thing missing from sgs2.
Also 5.3 sounds big, but you never know it may be the sweet spot between a phone and tablet. It is definitely going to replace both my phone and tablet.
And then there is the stylus which is kind of cool to have and might come handy in lots of places.
The only thing which is disappointing is the software. I would have liked to see ICS, but they are shipping with ginger bread.

Can I get an honest opinion....

I know this is the note forum and opinions will be biased. But I'm hoping we can be adults here...tomorrow is my last day that I can return my note to BB under their 30 day policy. I love this phone and all but it can definitely use a little more umph! Run MW3 on a non OC'd kernel then on DaG's kernel at 1.8 and you will know what I'm talking about. So the qustion is...how many of you would give this phone back and get the S3 on saturday given the option?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
1. I would keep the note, I love the large screen.
2. if i was to go back to the smaller screen: galaxy nexus > sg3 (i hate touchwiz and samsung/carrier software/upgrade cycle).
I hear that one x is pretty damn sick. Some people don't like the restriction of insternal sd only. But honestly all my music and photos and videos are on the cloud anyway...and the lack of removal battery? No biggie. I'm always near a charger...always. this thing is interesting as is the s3. Note is tight but me being someone who switches phones a lot, it might be time.

This. I do not think I would be hugely impressed if I traded this in for the SGSIII. The S4 processor is the only real improvement, and unless it is night and day better than the Note, I'd just miss having the Note screen size and stylus.
On a different note (<--ha), I recommended buying phones from Costco. Free accessories and a 90 day exchange period with no restocking fees. Plus their prices are usually cheaper anyway.

I have also recently had to make the same decision as I too buy my phones through BB but I think it comes down to personal necessity.
I am going to college in the fall so I needed something I could easily take notes on and jot down little ideas and such like that and I have also gotten too used to the phone size. Every time I even look at another phone it just seems microscopic. (as you get used to the big screen, sure you can get used to the small screen too)
If you are going to be using mainly for personal - GS3
If you are interested in mainly business or professional use, I would say the Note. (Plus, it looks more professional even when youre just texting ^.^)

Do you know if they have their own insurance policy. for 6.99 a month i get unlimited new/refurbished phones for any reason outside of lost or stolen (rooted, bricked, destroyed, water, hulk attacks). One time, I gave it back to them as I bricked it and they upgraded my phone for free. As a constant flasher (haha), I do not know if I would be able to give that up just yet.
Like others, I really like having the latest phone but it wasnt a big deal for a few years because for some reason I was able to get yearly upgrades, so even if I had a new phone for a few months and a better one came out I knew I could upgrade a few months from than when an even better phone would be out. When I picked up my infuse last year is when my yearly upgrade disapeared, I decided to open a second line which will give me back yearly upgrades, the trade off is a slightly higher bill...I think its 25 bucks more per month. I got the note in march and I can upgrade my other line in august.

Vive la Note!
I would keep the Note there is not that much of a big improvment on the SG3 to make up for the loss of the big display and spen. All the software improvements like the Svoice and Smart stay will be ported over by our Devs the only thing that you can't get is the better S4 processor or exynos. SO do you go with smaller screen, and no spen or better processor? I'll stick with the Note.
I've had my note for about two weeks and loved it the first week (rooted it right away). After going back and forth between this, my old nexus s, and my work phone(evo design) I've decided its too big and uncomfortable to hold. I love being able to type cleanly and the screen real estate, but its just too much for me.
I'm going to return it next week for a galaxy s3 pre order. I flashed to stock and unrooted resetting the flash counter and everything. Its not too hard if you decide to do it and I've never used adb before. If I didn't flash a different from the beginning, this thing would have been returned within a couple days. I've been using stock for a few days now and its a world of difference.
EDIT: I also didn't find any use for the S-pen. I tried to like it my first week, but using my fingers is easier for everything and I didn't find the snote app practical for much of anything. I know some people find great uses for this thing, but some reviews are right, you'll never know until you try

I'd keep the Note. For one simple thing, it is a Far the best phone out there with a big if. and that is IF you know what you want to use it for.
Simple example: sMemo not pratical? that is what i thought at first. until i created 2 to 3 empty notes as widgets on my homescreen just waiting to be written on and expanded in size for quick look.
Galaxy S3 to me is no upgrade, as a matter of fact if anything its just the software really. I think that Galaxy Note got a bad rap because of Ginger Bread, performance on that sucked. ICS in the other hand is awesome. I do Owned MW3 and performance on that sucked on the Note, and that is because of software optimization. Blame Android fragmentation for that

MW3 on saurom OC'd to 1.78 plays extremely fluidly...you take away the oc on ics and it is horrible to play.
Considering ill have this phone for the next two years....I'm just a little worried that the device has to be stretched to its limits NOW as soon as I bought it to perform "acceptably"...FYI I don't think ANY current unofficial ICS rom out now is "acceptable".

Getting the s3 isn't a bad option. Better than getting an One X. If I were to get a phone now, it would be the N7000 or the s3. BUT, I still love my G Note on UCLE2 ICS.

-iOS = inspiring Outdated Software
Stick with the note....Its a outstanding phone, with a beautiful large screen.. And development is finally taking off on this phone is only going to get better through time too. You will regret having such a smaller screen. Plus I know the processer is a little faster on the other phone but you won't ever tell the difference that much, plus we already have a overclocked gingerbread kernel.. and ics is right around the corner and soon we will have that kernel overclocked as well.....stick it out you won't regret it!

Plus you don't technically have to be a Costco member to order from their online store
I have had a phone with the S4 processor (HTC One S), and the performance is marginally better. For me the Note does everything I want and then some. With Nova Prime there is 0 lag or anything else. The screen is the best I have seen, even beating the One X in my honest opinion. I will try a GS3 and see if maybe I will score one locally when they hit craigslist, but just from looks alone....it looks like a huge vibrant, which I was not a huge fan of. The software is already being ported from the GS3 to our device, our FFC is better, and our design seems more high end.
Getting S3 is nice idea.. but If you want to do more than what you can do with a smartphone.. then definitely go for NOTE. It is the most awesome phone on the earth.
Buying S3 from ATT, Verizon and T-Mo is not much of an upgrade.. this S3 is Dual core (not quad as of International version)
I am into the same boat, thinking of getting the S3. The reason I am thinking about it is battery life really. I am disappointed that my 2500 mah battery with push Exchange email is down to 50% at the end of a 9 hour work day. My Captivate used to get to 60-65% instead.
If the S3 has better battery life then I will jump ship. Until them I am still trying to find ways to increase it. I have used hacked rooms as well as ICS its all the same.
I won't lie though, it is going to be tough to leave because the Note will always have these 2 things for it.
BIGGEST SCREEN
S-pen built in.

The biggest con for owning the Note? is that i cannot for the life of me use another phone. It has become everything from Phone, TV, game machine, Work, and Moleskine pocket notebook (yes the paper kind).

looking to upgrade..your thoughts

Hey Guys,
Im looking to upgrade and was wondering your thoughts and such. Currently i have the x2 running cm10 a2 and as much as i like it it is laggy and i get a decent amount of FC. I went to Verizon today and the only phone they have on display is the GS3 and Razr MAxx HD.
What im wondering are a few things.
1. Should i even stay with verizon. Right now i have unlimited data but hear when i upgrade i wont get that anymore. Should i go to sprint?
2. I was looking into the Note 2, GS3, Razr MAxx HD or the upcoming HTC DNA (J butterfly)
3. Price is important and i kow with the moto i can get a 100 bucks towards the Razr. If i dont do that i can sell it on CL
4. I like to ROM and flash and know the GS3 has been around a while which is good and and bad.. Lots of development but will be outdated as the note and dna are coming and also now that the HD is here.
5. If i dont get a new one would getting something like a Galaxy nexus s be a step up or stupid.
Kinda looking for your thoughts
My thinking on each.
gs3 is a good size and i see there is development
Will the note 2 be to big and gawdy looking?
the Maxx HD display is awesome but i want something a bit bigger than my x2 so will i be happy w the HD
The DNA doesnt even have any reviews or price so thats hard to compare
i didnt mind the plastic of the gs3 but i like motos heavier sturdier feel.
Also i want a removable bat and storage for an SD card.
YOur thoughts.. did i miss anything
I have been thinking of upgrading for some time. As soon as I get some extra money to do so. I have made the decision to upgrade to the Galaxy Nexus. I dont know how anyone can say thats not an upgrade from the Droid X2. Its a fully open device with a lot of dev support. Most importantly...Googles support. Until it cant support the updates Google pushes out, it will get all future updates. Even after then, devs will probably be pushing unofficial updates to it. Price-wise, its cheaper than the Galaxy S3. At least where I'm looking (ebay). Even with a used phone under 200 bucks, it will still be an upgrade from the Droid X2. Plus, it wont mess with your contract. Thats how I am thinking anyway.
Only downside, I dont think the Galaxy Nexus has SD card support. But a lot of newer devices dont.
There's no external card support for the Gnex. But my .02, you can't go wrong with a Nexus. Verizon has some deal now to there you can get one for like $50 with a 2 year deal.
But, keep your unlimited and buy a phone outright. That's the way to go.
i like the nexus. good looking but is it much if any bigger than the x2. the biggest thing i want is speed. Speed and no lag is the most key for me. No sd is kinda a con but i can save stuff on google drive so thats a plus.
Is this the nexus you guys are stating.
I think the x2 has a 4.3 screen vs the nexus 4 inch which is also another con. And i gig processor, doesnt the x2 have that. Spec wise its seems a lateral move or am i not looking at it right?
maybe i was looking at the wrong one
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/SCH-I515MSAVZW
this one is 4.65 inch and 1.2g dual core is this the one.
Should this be better than the x2 or just plain kill it?

Yes, thats the Galaxy Nexus. That phone can do so much more than the Droid X2 and is better in almost every way. Go to youtube and watch some reviews on it. Watch reviews on all those phones you mentioned. Thats usually how I decide on a phone. Thats probably the cheapest one out of all the ones you mentioned but its definitely better than most of them too.

He's right. Another thing too: not only is it fast and has a really nice screen, its customizeable to the hills. Unlocked bootloader and kernel...need I say more?
One idea is just going to the store and playing with the phones on display. Tell the sales people to give you a breather and have at it. See how smooth the graphics are, how snappy the device is and how clear the displays are. Look at them all. Don't focus on the Nexus. When your done, you'll see what we are talking about
Also, the support for this device is not going to die anytime soon...for a while at that matter. I personally wouldn't go Moto if I had the opportunity. So many false promises...blah
ok i like the nexus. About the same size as the gs3 which i like the size. one other thing i was curious on the nexus. With the x2 and the cm10 im running like i said it is laggy and sometimes downright a pit. Does the nexus handle roms well and flow as smooth as stock as im seeing in the videos. Stock the nexus seems to fly but i just hope it still flies with custom roms
Just my 2 cents.... If you're getting a nexus I would buy used so you save your upgrade and keep unlimited data. I have a s3 and absolutely love it but I think the nexus is fantastic compared to the x2. Cm10 should work flawlessly on the nexus.... It's got twice the ram of the x2. A friend of mine has the nexus and has no complaints.

You can't really compare them like that. That's like comparing a Kia to a Cadillac.....

The only reason the Droid X2 runs ICS and Jelly Bean a little crappy is because its locked down by Motorola. If we were able to overclock it and change out the kernels, it would run just as well. The Galaxy Nexus runs Jelly Bean as stock so any ROM based off that will run just as good. We are running Jelly Bean on a Gingerbread Kernel. Thats why it doesnt run well on the Droid X2.
ok i had read that before now i understand better. If i get the nexus off ebay or CL, and say something happens to it physically. Like i drop it or whatever and the screen doesnt work or something, am i able to go thru verizon or am i basically screwed...?

I dont think anything you do to a phone you by outside of Verizon is covered. Just get a hardcore case if you are worried about it.
If you buy it out right, then you are on your own. Buy yourself a good protective case like an Otterbox or Hyperion, etc and you'll be fine. I've dropped mine off the roof of my truck more than twice and its still kick in'. That's about 10' down each time.
One thing you guys didn't answer...would you stay w Verizon or jump to sprint. If yes or no what would your reasons be

I would stay with Verizon unless you have a money problem. From what I've heard Sprints 3g speeds are like that of a turtles. Don't know about 4g but how van it be much better?

Sprint here totally sucks. I work with a guy who can't even email himself a picture....data speeds are so slow it times out. There's a guy in the Verizon Galaxy S3 development section who went to the Note 2 on Sprint...lasted 2 weeks, he couldn't take the data speeds. I personally would never switch to Sprint, but every area is different.
I don't know about sprint, but do not go to AT&T either. I came from them and they suck bad. Verizon may be more expensive but I found that you get what you pay for. Verizon has great service.
The Verizon note 2 is right around the corner now, and remember Verizon is on schedule to have the entire 3g footprint covered in 4g by the coming summer, where i am in rural mn no other company can get me even 50kbps speed while Verizon says i can do 5megs per sec while walking through fields.... By summer yhat is, but even still i can pull 8x the competitions data... Its simply the strongest network there is and thats a huge part of being mobile... Although Im sure there are people who never leave major population centers where all networks fly

I was looking to see how much data I used a month. I'm at an average of 1.1 g. So going w a new contract at 2g would drop my bill 20 dollars. If I go to 4 g it would save 10 dollars. I use probably 70% WiFi and 30 3g. I was thinking the galaxy nexus but I want something no less a few months old given tech changes every month. So my thoughts... the nexus is almost a yr old, the s3 will be 9 months old soon. I can't spend 3 bills but by my update eligibility in 1/16/13 the note 2 should b 200 and there will be the HTC DNA and maybe, ....maybe the s4 but I've read that is summertime and I can't wait that long. So I am back at sq one trying to figure which one I like better. I have til January I guess to figure it out. I def want something that will have a lot of dev support w roms and such

Ditch s3 for the n2?!

In due for an upgrade in April. I'm either sticking with my s3 (I love this phone. Ditched the iPhone 5 after only 6 days). OR I'm snagging the n2. Thoughts?!

Go for the n2! This is the best phone ever

Just depends, do you want the larger screen and the spen? The Note II is just a larger s3
Sent from my Note II
Both great phones. I really think it's more of a size question than anything. And that's just personal preference. My coworker has the Note 2. Great looking device, but i couldn't deal with it as a phone. Even he got tired of clumsily getting it out of his pocket to answer a call, not to mention flipping open the Flip Cover. Now he wears a blue tooth earpiece all the time. Again, that's personal preference. I personally couldn't stand having a blue tooth earpiece in constantly.
Spec to spec, the Note 2 is a nice leap forward, if and only if you see the significant size increase as a plus.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
Upgrades in April? Hell no do NOT get the Note 2. This phone missed one vital thing and I don't care because this phone > Thunderbolt but man this thing should have had an Exynos 5 processor instead of a 4.
Since your upgrade isn't up for a few months I say definitely do not get a Note 2. The jump in performance on the Exynos 5 will be worth the wait. I'm sure the Note 3 will have that chip in it and man is it going to make all of us Note 2 owners jealous. The S3 is a fine phone, no reason to turn it in for the Note 2. None whatsoever.
Thanks all for your opinions. Bigger screen is def worth it for me.
Another question on my mind: when do you think we can expect the s4/n2?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I would say stick with the s3 as it is still a great phone, if you are unsure about something then that most likely means that it doesnt have that "wow" factor. Once you find a found your interested in, you wouldnt need to ask anyone!
But if you are waiting for the next big thing, you will always be waiting as technology is always revolving. When something new and great comes out, it will ALWAYS be inferior at one point.

question will be most likely be ditch S3 for s4 or n2 by march.
Honestly, I wouldn't waste an upgrade from an S3 to a GN2. If I were you I would buy the GN2 and try to sell the S3 to try to cover some of the cost. Otherwise wait until April and see what's out or coming out.

Agreed. Then when the S4 or even of the Moto X gets leaked more, you'll still have an upgrade for a discounted price versus 7-800.
If your S3 is in good condition you'll get over 300for it.

I had the s3 right before this. I loved that phone. I finally had it to the right ROM and everything the perfect way. Had it running beautifully and then I heard about the Note 2. I immediately was drawn to the screen size. For me that was reason enough to get it. And the specs are great on it. My personal opinion I would get it.

I agree with this 100%.
I had two G3's all ROMed and tweaked out & I loved them.
I had always wanted the bigger note screen and was pissed it wasn't available on Verizon.
As soon as I heard the N2 was coming to VZ I knew I had to have it.
I gave one G3 to my Wife to replace her aging Droid Charge and the other to my Son to replace his RAZR MAXX.
I am 1000% happy with my new N2. I think this phone is perfect in every way and will be happy with it for a long time (this is the first phone I have ever been 100% happy with). At this point, I really don't see how a different processor will make ANY difference whatever in my use of the phone.
Heck, the G3 is dual core & this one is quad core but I can't tell any difference whatever in daily use of the two.

With a quad-core CPU instead of the dual core in the US variant of the S3, in addition you get a larger battery and a RGB screen instead of the PenTile Matrix in the S3.
You guys need to factor in that the OP's upgrade isn't available for a few more months. By that time the S4 will be right around the corner, which you can sure bet will trump the Note 2.
I'm not one to say keep waiting all year round for the next best thing because you'll be waiting forever. But truth is this phone is kinda old already. Note 2 launched back in October 2012, we're now pushing February 2013 almost. Why waste an upgrade on an old device? If you really want the increased screen size then just wait for the Note 3 which is rumored to have a 6.3" 1080p screen. If I had a Galaxy S3 I would have skipped the Note 2 for sure and waited for the Note 3, but since I had an HTC Thunderbolt (piece of crap) I was desperate to make a move. And so I did. I'm happy with the Note 2 but I just know much better devices are right around the corner, don't waste it on an old phone.
Man I wish VZW still offered one year contracts. I'm never gonna make it using one phone for 2 years. There's just no way
Since you love the S3 I'd stick with it and look at either the S4 (or whatever they call it) or the Note 3. The S4 is rumored to release around your upgrade and the Note 3 would probably release sometime between September and November.

Well that's exactly what I was thinking. What is the likelihood of the N3 and S4 coming out together? Ultimately, I don't know a whole lot about the N2, other than it's bigger than the s3. So I was looking for others' opinions... to kind of help guide me. I am, of course, going to wait and see what rumors surface by then.
Pretty much what I was looking for. Looks like I'll be waiting 'till I hear some good rumors.
I just sold my s3 on ebay as unlocked. Got $400 for it and bought a note2. I love this phone plus i still have my upgrade for the next big thing.
I went ahead and added a line to upgrade. I would of had to do it anyway since you can't use the upgrade on your line if you want to keep unlimited data. Well worth it, coming from a galaxy nexus this phone is awesome. Definitely took a week to get used to the size though.

Whats your thoughts on upgrading?

I was meant to upgrade last year, but held off to wait on the sgs4 (passed on the sgs3, stuck with my trusty sgs2). But was a little let down from what I've seen so far, from the photos it looks like a sgs3 (not a fan) but maybe in person it will be nice. So I tempted to jump ship for the htc one, started reading xda (As you do) and see posts saying the sgs4 might not get such great support from the usual suspects...that aint good.
So, if your reading this then you aint upgraded for similar reason no doubt...whats the plan? I mean, yeah I want those crazy specs, removable sd/battery...but stock roms and broken custom roms? Im seriously tempted on the htc one, however its a bit of a double edged sword, looks awesome, drop that **** and its ****ed. My sgs2 barely has a scratch.
Whats your thoughts sgs2 owners, Im still on ICS and not kept uptodate with the goings on here. I dont doubt there are awesome devs here, but if the major players dont take an intrest in the sgs4/exynos...its it doomed?
Do you wan't it just because you like to have last piece of tech and don't use even 5% of it..or you need it for better productivity in bussiness?
If first then i don't see a need for upgrade..
Dont get me wrong, I love gadgets, but i botched a screen replacement on my old hd2 (which is now my bros) so if I cant repair I will get a new one and give the sgs2 to my bro (sad to see the hd2 go tho). Anyway, Im more intrested on your thoughts if you were going to buy a new phone sgs4 or htc one? Like I said, Im not as into the whole modding thing as I used to (still like to flash custom roms tho), will the big guns not supporting the sgs4 make much diff? I would of thought so, but maybe there is talk on here?
Well i don't think i will get a new phone, but if it happenes it will definitely be either HTC One or Nexus 5..no need to give Samy money anymore..they have gone the Apple road

Yup, it seems they try to much and forget the core aspects. Just saw this, not sure how true...maybe the uk will get the qualcomm after alll (still not sure if that will make a difference with CM)
http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2013/03/samsung-galaxy-s4-quad-core-only-confirmed-for-the-uk/
What are the rest of your guys thoughts on the sgs4 vs htc one? I hate the thought of touchwiz for 18months, I would much rather vanilla android...but not sure about the htc one.
How about a nexus 4? I'm gonna check when Google i/o is. Should give a good idea of when the next nexus is out.

My S2 contract is up next month and before its release I always planned to upgrade to an S4, however since the S4 launch I have decided to go for the HTC One.
I think the S2 , especially with jelly bean is still a great device but I will pass it on to my son to replace his rubbish galaxy ace, the S3 I think will be Samsungs peak device, the S4 seems to be more of the same, meh, no real innovations on the hardware side but lots of new and gimmicky touchwizz features. I feel as already mentioned by an earlier poster, that this feels a little Apple like...... buy our phone because it's a Samsung and because lots of other people buy it..... rather than....buy it because it's a great phone...
There are, to varying degrees, innovations on BlackBerry z10 (The hub and gestures), Nokia Lumia 920 , (baked in funtionality, low light camera and the live tiles of WP8) and The HTC One (gorgeous design, Zoe, Blinkfeed, ultra pixel camera) all that interest me as an enthusiast/nerd that the S4 just doesn't seem to have.
The Z10 looks great but it's to early in its life for me to spend 2 years without so many essential apps that may or may not arrive on the device. Android has really matured with jelly bean and so for me it is the HTC One

Seriously S IV probably dosent need any custom ROM. It rocks as it is , stock. We on the S II need and want all this custom ROMs / kernels because we want that extra power and smoothness. No need to worry about developers not suporting it , in my opinion.
Now if you have money to spend buy the octo core one and be sure that at least two years you wont think about another upgrade.

I'm of a similar opinion, S2 running well but if I can get a deal I'll upgrade. Torn between S4 and xperia Z. S2 was my first smart phone and I do like TW but I hear Sony is more developer friendly and I like the choice and freedom of flashing custom ROMs. Both phones will meet my performance requirements so will come down to cost eventually.

I would say buy nexus 4. But, if you like Sammy based roms, you can go with Samsung s4. Im using sammy rom on s2 and i would never again flash aosp/cm based roms only because of screwed drivers. Cudos to devs to what did they do but.. True project butter is still better. I would buy s4 only because i dont mind using sammy based roms, like neatrom lite. And snapdragon version of s4 might have better support because they push their sources out i think. Wait until May to see nexus 5, then decide.

Go with s4, xperia z has really low specs for that kind of device. And not that good display, its like washed out, also UI is not smooth, it stutters a lot. Better buy nexus 4 instead of xperia z.

You mean black and blue. you can flash or apply themes to make it like sammy for example. Thats why nexus is great. If i find great opportunity to buy n4 till May, i will, and if not, ill wait to see what nexus 5 will have. But right now, from devices on market, i would choose between nexus4 and s4. Htc one is good too, but that huge speaker grills on front? I mean come in, like some kid played with design. Also i saw 1080p video sample on youtube. It stutters like hell. Sure, it has great audio and its the best in low light capturing, but.. i personally dont need phone to shoot at night or in the dark. so, its s4 or nexus4.

I haven't made my mind up yet but it's going to be a toss up between the Xperia Z, BB Z10, HTC One or the next Nexus 5.
Specs and power are a consideration but....
Xperia Z because I miss reading a book in the bath! Possible development support and good noises coming from Sony but the same could be said for Samsung a few years back.
BB Z10 as the OS intrigues me.
HTC One for its beautiful design, BOM and form factor.
Nexus 5 for the custom appeal and all round Googleness. Strayed from the Nexus line with the S2 so might go back.
Not considering the S4 at the moment as it looks more like a S3 upgrade than revolution. Samsung played it safe, almost using the Apple model of next model releases and I don't like the end result. To paraphrase a song, "here is the new phone, same as the old phone".

Good to know thank you, is the development scene active over on the S3 forum? Just had a quick browse through and there is a decent selection of custom ROMs available.
