We should appreciate the transformer prime more. - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

With all the complaints in this forum, you'd think this was a bad device.
I'll tell you, over in the tf101 forum there was no where near as many complaints and the tf101 wasn't the perfect device either.
The prime is an improvement in alot of ways.
The tf101 had backlight bleeds, I went through 3 of them before I settled.
The tf101 was sluggish, no one here can fully respect the power of the tegra 3 processor without experiencing the tegra 2. The boot time was like 4 minutes, it was slow in alot of areas that the prime isn't.
It had to use honeycomb up until 2 weeks ago, that's about a year - prime owners got it asap with a slew of support from asus for the gps/wifi issues.
The tf101 had keyboard dock issues, alot of the docks had to be sent back in.
It was fat and plastic. It was brown. It collected dust under it's camera.
It wasn't perfect.
But what device is? Galaxy tabs are diet vanilla, nothing really special or innovative about them. The follow the ipad status quo. Toshiba tabs are jokes on battery life. Acers are humongous. Ipads use proprietary apple garbage and are extremely limited by their OEM.
When I got my prime I would grip this thing tightly and say to myself "I own a ****ing transformer prime".
I waited for this thing for months through using my tf101, when everyone was hoping Q4 release meant October, but october stretched on to november, and then december when it finally came out.
But this exceptional tablet gets overshadowed by a couple of it's faults, rather than how great it's advantages are.
We own the world's first quad core tablet, it's thin, it's beautiful, it get's ridiculous battery life with it's incredibly well designed keyboard dock. We have usb connectivity, micro sd, full sized sd, hdmi, etc. Some devices don't have any of those, let alone all of them like we do.
Sure something better will come. Maybe you want a more expensive Ipad 3 with a redundant screen resolution, slower cpu, thicker design to compensate for it's thirst of excessive battery life, and lack of expansion. It's not perfect and the devices after it won't be either...
It's time we be happy prime owners. Asus did design a good device, and they don't receive credit where credit is due. I'm proud to own this tablet.

@OP: The Church of Primetology seeks chaplain
!Hail to you, oh holy Prime, father of connection lacking communication specialists!
Forgive me that I don't see your creators wisdom as he provided you also with that microsd slot so this shall be your door to the world.
Just let your green light shine and don't punch the xcsd out again because I will not find it in the sewage where I would be looking for my missing GPS if you hadn't already disappeared somewhere on a shelf of the ASUS repdep. Thank you for having enlighten my life longer than a week. Which is exceptional or was it the rule?
Give me a thank or another tablet will you.

I endorse the OP post. I ran out of thanks. good viewpoint/angle on the situation. preach on my brother thrash all those who committed sins against the prime. they need redemption NOW! lol

lolololololololol

Agree w the OP. I ranted about its short comings when I first got it, but after using it for a few weeks, I love it. It really is a beautiful device and fast. Its my first tab so maybe my expectations were too high at first.
BTW, what do you mean by redundant screen?

This a great device once you get it to work without crash. Everything's stable for me on .15 nd the browsing is super fast thanks to OC 1.6ghz ... its perfect for what I do

Honestly looking at benchmark (I'm at 13162) scores its the best android device out now by far

I really like it. I'm not an Asus fanboy, in fact I try as hard as possible to not be a fanboy of anything.
That being said, there were and are shortcomings. But over time the bugs will get ironed out, CM9 and other ROM makers will do some wonders.
I don't know, when I use the Prime (especially with the new floaty browser!) I feel more like I'm using a computer, not an appliance. You know, file management is in my hands, I can f*** around with the OS, break it if I want. Whenever I use my friends' or coworkers' iDevices they just feel like appliances with a shallow OS.
But I'm not trying to sell anyone on it. Some people like it, some people don't. I like seams, I like tinkering. I learn more from it. All those folks complaining about their wifi, gps, screen issues; I guarantee you they have learned MUCH more about those aspects of mobile computing because of those faults.

this is kind of weird and hard to understand how you guys settle with a device that has a lot of design flaws on both hardware and software. Asus transformer prime was my first tablet. And to be honest the one I got had nearly no light bleed, an okay wifi, kind of working GPS and fairly stable device in comparison with the horror stories that we all know through the forum. I made the though call return my transformer prime one day before my return window. The idea I had was wait a little until Asus get the problems fixed and buy a great one. However, I realized that I have to have a tablet as waiting for a fixed transformer. So I went ahead and bought a Samsung galaxy tab from Costco which has a 90 days return window. Here is my impression out of my first 10 days
-way stable. Had to reboot only one time due to firmware upgrade.
-no hiccups as I use or browse. It is dual core but performs way better than the balance mode of transformer
-screen readability is better than transformer
-wifi, GPS and Bluetooth works in a way it is suposed to be
- Form factor way comfortable than prime. No sharp uncomfortable edges. Way better feeling in your hand. I don't believe I would have written this.
-battery last way longer than prime
There are a few benefits that prime has over.
super ips display is better for outdoor use
Tergra 3 may be better for tegra optimized games. But I am not a game person and use my tablet for business.

Galaxy tab smoother than the prime, that's cute haha. I can see how those sharp rounded corners would be a pain seeing as how they would break the laws of physics and all, can't be having that.
I'm just meeting with you though, to each his own

a few things i hate about the galaxy tab 10.1 wifi was the newton rings on the screen...it gets worse and worse over time.
also it did not have a microsd slot nor a micro hdmi.
those were the deal breakers for me

less people complained about Toyotas having brakes that didnt work than have whined like babies about this TOY. and look at that, Toyota's still the #1 car manufacturer. so when people say we ''settled'' for our Primes, they are sorely mistaken. my Prime had to settle for ME as a user, as it is FAR beyond anything i can hope to do. I love my Prime, best gadget I ever bought

agree with the OP
I completely agree with the OP.
This device is really top notch.
Build quality is amazing, quad core is very nice (definitely will be more utilized in the close future, thank you xda ), multitasking is just awesome.
Converting from an ipad, I can safely say BYE APPLE!
Yes the "new ipad" has an amazing screen, I'll take the TFP thank you.

Yeah...........wouldn't want to expect what was advertised !
Design? Who else designs a micro sd card slot that once a card is inserted, it can "Self" eject at any time !
The only thing ground breaking with this tablet is Tegra 3 and an all metal back............but I think we all know why no one else uses an all metal back, by now!

I hate to correct you, but Toyota lost 16% of sales last year and is now no.3 after GM and VW (by a wide margin). Having said that I also have only good things to say about my lovely Prime, but it`s certainly important to note, that I don`t really use the GPS, since that duty is up to my GN. In any case I also respect other opinions, but life is sometimes nicer looking at a glass that is half full compared to viewing it as half empty

Coming from the Acer Iconia A500, I can honestly say that the ATP is WAY better in every way but one. The wifi is slightly poorer than on the Acer. That one was far from perfect either when coming to wifi. And the ranting in the Acer forum is way way less than on this forum.
I am simply AMAZED that some people expect their tablet to have a functionel GPS INDOORS!!! I can´t even get satelite lock indoors with my Garmin car gps.
I fixed the wifi problem quite simply by adding a second wifi router in the house using the house wires. And people complain about not getting a signal when they are other places than home... I just bring my own wifi in the form of a Huawei E586 (Search on Ebay)
On my Acer I had poor wifi, sluggish scrolling and browsing, squicky body, and a front and back part that did not want to stay together down in the left corner, Heavy, FAT, poor battery compared to the ATP, no alternatives regarding dockingstation.....the list just goes on.
And worst of all compared to ATP... Acers EXTREMLY POOR customer service. If you think that ASUS has bad service...try Acer!!!
Updates took forever compared to other tablet makers. I think the tf101 and Xoom got HC 3.2 about 2 months before any Acer tablet did.
I think that Acer A500/501/200 users still have to wait yet another couple of months before they get ICS.
When the A500 came out it had HC 3.0 and people had to wait several months to even get the HC 3.1. If you have ever tried the HC 3.0 you would be reluctant to even so much as try to complain about the ATP.
So if you think that ASUS works slowly to fix things.... THINK AGAIN!!

HAHA your funny!!!! I have both sitting right in front of me and I can tell you the galaxy tab doesn't even come close to the performance as our primes. I have to test on both with our applications at work and I cringe every time I pick it up. Even the ipads 1's perform better then that brick.

Off to Texas....

Well, I finally decided to contact Asus on the phone. They're pretty much clueless on what is going on. They are reading from a book or outline on what to say or ask it seems. Just to please them I did whatever is they asked. All the way down to a factory reset. I got my RMA and who the heck knows what will happen. I left them a very detailed message in the box, which I took several pictures of while I was packing it.
I actually may just go out and buy another tablet some where to tide me over, but haven't the slightest of what to get. I was thinking Samsung 10inch but jeeez they still are on Honeycomb. How is that?

Grab a Moto Xoom. They are less than $250.00 at Staples and already have ICS OTA. It doesn't have the same screen resolution your Prime has and only a Tegra 2 processor but it will certainly hold you over...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1472533
I picked up a Samsung Galaxy 10 tablet and I have to say for the price and a dual processor I'm pretty impressed. There was zero screen bleed when I turned it on, and guess what, all functions and features were working out of the box! I also like the DUAL speaker placement on the Samsung, they are on each side and not on the back AWAY from you. Oh well, nothing I can do now but if Asus can't provide a complete working tablet with my Bluetooth headphones working AND my wifi normal then I'll want a full refund and end up with this Samsung for now. I've been beating on this Samsung for at least 2 hours and not one reboot or glitch yet. Still running 3.2 and no ICS yet. I can't wait for some of these other companies to start making tegra 3 chips and hi-res screen. If the quality is like what this Samsung is I'll never look at Asus again, sorry.
I had the Galaxy Tab 10.1 before i got the Prime. IMO the Prime is much better than the Galaxy.
where in texas is your prime going? If its anywhere near sugar land I would want to stop by with my prime and have them see if they can fix my gps issues.

I've had two G-Tabs, a U.S. Wi-Fi and a UK 3G. They're built like tanks. I dropped it down a flight of carpeted stairs in nothing but its slip case and it wasn't even phased. I accidentally poured water in to its media dock while it was connected and it worked fine once it dried out. I can’t count how many times it hit the ground on airplanes and at airports and it still looks new. Compared to the Zoom and Jetstream it has the best Wi-Fi and GPS and supports the 5GHz band. The most impressive thing about the G-Tab is that it just works - the same way, every time. The display is really impressive. The design was changed in October and the new displays have better contrast and less in-your-face color saturation. There are also three temperature settings from warm to cool. "Official" ICS is supposed to be available Q1 but CM9's available and the only thing not working is the camera. Its got a robust dev community and some pretty impressive (speed wise) 3.2 ROMs and kernels available. 1080P's a bust because of Teg2 not supporting NEON but 720P works decently with the right player. On the downside, its Teg2, has no ports so you'll have to buy (expensive) accessories, and they're still expensive. Costco's got the 16GB for $389 in-store only. By buying it there, you can play with it for 90 days and return it if you don't like it or if something better comes along.
The Toshiba A200 with the same TI SoC and GPU as the GN is out in the UK and will be released this month in Canada as the Excite. I played with a friend’s and it's much smoother than Teg2 and the display is gorgeous. It's so thin and light it makes the G-Tab feel bulky. It's pricey though. It looks like the first Teg3 tablet to be actually available for sale will be the HTC Vertex (formerly Quattro) in March. The announcement will be made at a HTC press conference at MWC on the 27th. Hopefully it'll be sold Wi-Fi only and direct (and in the U.S.) and not tied to a carrier the way the Jetstream was. I had a Jetstream for a while and liked it but it weighed a ton and was too big to hold comfortably. I'd consider an HTC tablet, the Jetstream was extremely well built and even had a discrete subwoofer. Sense on a tablet added a lot of cool features too.
Good luck.

Just kidding. Assuming the TF700, A700, and Vertex are solid, from that point forward, it's stupid for anyone to buy a first-gen tablet. The same could be said for the Prime if they weren't just so damn inconsistent.

Its cool. Just wanted to mess with ya on that post. But yes, from now on, on any new device, I will wait for a while and see how things turn out with it. I got lucky with the Prime, but not going to take anymore high dollar risks..lmfao. I seriously see me keeping Prime for a long time. Only thing that might entice me is once kal El/Wayne/tegra4 chipset comes out towards later or end of the year. I used Ipad for almost 2 yrs. Without really wanting another device. So I can easily see the same or longer with my Prime. We haven't even scratched the surface of the full potential or power of Tegra3 yet.
Good luck. Keep on the repair centers **ses, they've had my unit for almost a month. I called again today and no one knows why it's still there, worse yet; it hadn't been worked on at all.

I believe the RMA center is in Grapevine, TX. That's very near D/FW airport.
I'm sorry to say that when Samsung does come out with their tegra 3, gorilla glass, and all that I'll be grabbing one of those right away. Of course the current Galaxy tab can't compete with the Prime, but right now I'd take Samsung's quality control right now. I love my Prime, trust me, was an awesome tablet and I have no idea how long it will be RMA'ed for.

Would appreciate honest opinions about upgrading from tf101

hiya all
got a tf101 and its a great tablet but i was thinking about going for a prime and selling the 101. Honest opinions about this please. Is it worth it or am i better waiting.
thanks
ian
Unless you are planning on using it as your primary navigation device, I would skip it.
Otherwise, it is totally worth it.
The Prime is an excellent upgrade from the TF101. It is faster, has a better screen and a more "quality" feel despite some of the issues people have reported on these forums. The only negative to the Prime is that the GPS is useless for navigation. However you can use aGPS to get rough position for location based services like Search.
Just like the others said. I'm sure you've read the issue threads. Not get a flipside view. Check out the Positive transformer thread in my signature. IMO, prime is totally worth it
Well...
Since you already have a tablet and are looking to upgrade, I would actually wait for the TF700. HD screen, tegra 3, and new back design (which supposedly is going to fix GPS, Wifi+bluetooth issues). If you don't want to wait, get the Prime. It's a beautiful beast!
I upgraded from the TF101...no regrets at all. My TF101 gathered dust until i swapped it for a Microwave/combi oven
The only reason that I sold my TF101 and got the TP was to get decent HW video decoding. With Tegra3 NVidia finally did that.
Additionally you get a lighter and thinner design, brighter screen, better battery life at the cost of weaker GPS reception and almost unusable compass. Oh, and the USB cable is longer :]
You guys need to learn how to sell........
IT WILL GET YOU MORE SEX.....

Just one caveat here: the TF700 will have 2.25X the pixels with its 1920X1200 screen, but its Tegra 3 processor will only be about 10% faster. So, it's inevitable that the TF700 will have lower performance for anything involving writing to the screen. It'll probably perform just fine, but there will have to be a penalty. I think this is why ASUS is marketing it as a "home theater" kind of device--good for watching 1080P video right on the device--and not as the hottest gaming device.
So, if you're primarily concerned about performance, then the TF201 is a great choice. It has a great screen that, to my eyes, is definitely good enough. If you want the highest res screen available, then I'd consider waiting for the TF700.

Good point. Apple had to almost double the size of the iPad's battery to accomodate the high-res screen and faster GPU. With even a 10% increase in the Tegra 2's speed and the screen, the TF700 will definitely have weaker battery life. ASUS has said it'll be, what, an hour less? In real life, this is probably conservative.
If they put a significantly bigger battery in the dock that would probably help. On the Prime the dock's battery is quite a bit lower-capacity than the tablet's. It'd probably help the dock be a bit heavier too so the thing wouldn't "fall over" quite so often.

Get the prime. Be sure you purchase at a place where you can exchange in case WIFI / Lightbleed is not up to your satisfaction. Its the luck of the draw.
Prime is well worth it. UNLESS you want to wait a few months for TF700.
Of course about all you are going to get different is a higher resolution display.
Plus better odds on getting a good working WIFI & Light bleed free tab.
Waiting for prime to hit my local BB here for I can get another. BECAUSE I want to be able to exchange it *IF it has WIFI/ Lightbleed issues.
thanks all. i've just ordered one
thanks

Congrats. I'm sure you wont have any regrets. Well maybe once the t700 comes along. But when that will be....who knows.

Tf 300 GPS not too good.

I was at nfm today and saw the new tf 300 and tried it out. All I can say is I don't like it. Back plate is rough on the hands and GPS still does not work. Let GPS status go for 3 mins and nothing. Glad I an sticking with my prime

First, I'm glad you're happy with your Prime. It's a great device. Enjoy it.
That said, according to all of the reviews and pretty much anyone who owns one, the GPS reception on the 300 is fantastic, especially compared to the Prime. It's rather difficult to truly judge the GPS capabilities of a device just from the quick, informal test you ran on a display unit inside a store. That's about as far from conclusive evidence of its GPS capabilities as claiming the same without ever having even touched one.
As for the feel of the device, that's all personal preference. I don't find the slightly raised ridges to be rough on the hands in the slightest. In fact, it's quite comfortable and helps with grip tremendously. Actually, I can't imagine someone describing the back as rough. It's not even close to fitting the definition of that word. Additionally, the more rounded edges of the 300 definitely make holding the device for extended periods much more comfortable for me than holding the Prime. The Prime always felt like it was cutting into my hand after awhile. I don't get that at all with the 300.
The Prime is a fantastic device, and there are several things it has over the 300 (display, weight, thinness, etc). But the 300 definitely has a leg up over the Prime on GPS (and WiFi as well for many), and the feel of the device in hand all comes down to personal preference.

I completely agree with you. It's very misleading when people open a new thread to give opinion on the device without properly testing it. Did OP test the GPS on other devices in the store, I highly doubt any other device will be able to lock on a satellite in an indoor environment, including the dedicated Garmin devices. The feel of the device is definitely a more personal choice, some people prefer the extra thickness and grip the plastic cover provides. The GPS/Wifi has been excellent on mine, not that it was horrible on the prime, but with plastic cover the signal simply travels through better.

I never just open threads without reason. I tested it with a galaxy tab, Sony s and the new Toshiba tablet. Forget what its called. Very nice by the way. But yeah they all has gps within 1 min. The tf300 never found 1 sat. That is all I am saying on this thread
I am in no way saying it is a bad device

I agree with this and your original post. I'll go down to NFM to take look myself, but I already know if its thicker, heavier, and the screen isn't as good you can keep it. If I need GPS I'll use my phone or gps tether. No way on earth I'm sticking that dongle thing on my prime, but then again the dongle was free so you get what you pay for. I got the prime partially because of the looks, feel, weight, and screen. Whatever tablet I get next will have to be better in all areas than the prime, I'll wait till I see the 300 but I doubt it's better.

In 95% of cases, the Prime is the much better device. For people that dont use GPS its like 98% of cases
Also Tf300 screen is made of harden glass compared to the TF201 Gorilla Glass. I take my Prime with me everywhere I go. It's nice to see the screen in complete daylight with intense glare. If I can recall Primes have 600 nits compared to 350 nits on Tf300. The whole ergonomics deal with Tf300 is nice but my Moko slim case feels nice too and it even protects my investment. My wifi rocks just as good as my Galaxy tab 10.1 My TF201 internal GPS is weaker but can hold a lock while driving. Or just connect my dongle if need be. Love my Prime. To each his own right

Again, completely personal preference. I had the Prime and got rid of it. Now I have the TF300. I won't be getting rid of it. I definitely like it much better than the Prime as an overall device.

Some parts of it are personal preference, i agree. But some are just Facts. I based my statement on how often and how i use my Tablet. For example The display is better on the prime because of the IPS+. And I use the display alot Wifi on the other hand is only better in certain locations far away from the router. GPS yeah, no argument here but thats something I hardly ever use, thats why it only got a small %age in my statement
The look (aluminum/colored plastic) is personal preference. And all the other hardware stuff... Cpu clock, Gorilla Glass, speaker? etcetc are just better on the prime.
But i could see myself being happy with the TF300 as well but i already have a prime that works perfectly in all situations in which i need a tablet, so for me the TF300 is only superior in the 2% of my usage time where i need GPS. I'd never even think about exchanging it for a TF300^^

For me, the display isn't that big of a deal. Indoors, the displays are pretty comparable (unless you want retina burning brightness). Outside, it's not even a contest, but I don't use it outside. So the display argument again comes down to personal preference. Sure the Prime's display is better, but in general use, not much of a difference will be seen. CPU clock speed pretty much is a wash as well in every day use. The speaker on the Prime might be slightly better, but again, they're so similar that it would be tough for anyone to distinguish in a blind test.
I find the TF300 to be superior for my uses. I had incredibly spotting WiFi reception on my Prime, which in and of itself is pretty much a deal breaker. No such problems on the TF300. I actually use GPS fairly often, so that's a given on the TF300. The feel of the TF300 is much better in hand to me, particularly because of it being slightly thicker and having more rounded sides. I use the dock extensively, so using the Prime in a case to make the ergonomics more comfortable for long periods was frustrating since I had to constantly take it on and off. With the TF300, I don't have to worry about one.
So while I'll certainly agree that on paper the Prime is clearly ahead of the TF300, but in everyday use, I find the TF300 to be much more usable than the Prime was for me. And again, most of the reasons I listed why it is such come down to personal preference. You won't catch me knocking the Prime. It's fantastic. And I can certainly understand why people who own it wouldn't want to get rid of it for the TF300. But the TF300 just works for me in ways that the Prime didn't. The minor trade-offs in a few areas from the Prime have been more than worth it for improvements in daily use.
Posters like cloud5 & jjdevega make me feel good about my purchase. Prime is a great device, when you have a really good working one like we do..lol. I use my prime everyday. This is my computer as years ago(when first Ipad came out) I converted to using tablets for any and every computer function I needed. Now that I have the dock also, it adds a whole new dimension to prime and extends its already superior battery life. As far as how it feels, Prime feels great holding it. I'm 6'5, with big hands, so the whole prime cuts into people hands seem over exaggerated to me. like apple would say, "You holding it wrong" if it does..lol. Im still just as amazed with my device since the first day I got it. Everyone loves how thin and light it is. plus the differences in display compared to 300 isn't just prime being brighter. If you look at any tech site detailed breakdown of the 2 displays, Prime is clearly superior. With that said 300 still has a decent display. it not being gorilla glass will make it's display easier to break/scratch. so people better make sure to protect it. I haven't had a case or screen protector for my prime since day 1 and no scratches or cracks on the screen.
I can see why a few like the 300 over the prime. its because their experience with Prime wasn't a good one like mines. I bet if they had a prime like mines, or cloud5 or jjdevega, they wouldn't even want to downgrade to 300. It is a downgrade. Even Asus calls it this themselves. its the low end replacement to the OG Transformer. No disputing that.
I like having a device that's kind of exclusive. If i want to be a "me to" guy, I would've just got a new Ipad.
mods do need to go on and make a 300 section so we can get all these mofos up outta here..lol j/k..300 is the little brother to prime. its like little kids(300) running around playing. they need their own playground now so the grownups(Prime) can conduct business..lmfao

First GPS lock can take up to 12.5 minutes (internet connection could speed this up depending if AGPS was properly configured by manufacturer, which Asus often forgets to do it seems). Next locks will be much faster. 3 mins is too little to test GPS. The time is 12.5 because you need to get data about satellite positions from the satellites.

Is this normal I ask as I don't use GPS on a tablet but I just tried GPS tether with my evo and got an instant lock. I would think waiting almost 12 minutes would leave me very lost.

Not a bashing thread-- Engadget's take on prime

Just today a blurb on engadget really hit home with me, he describes the prime experience perfectly.... amazing device but just don't trust it:
The ASUS Transformer Prime is one of those "time machine" devices. You know, the kinds of gadgets you'd love to travel with into the past simply to blow people's primitive minds. I think about that every time a new generation of video game consoles debuts and I'm sure millions would love to take an iPhone back 20 years. With the Prime, I remember being amazed way back in 2011 that such processing power could be shoehorned into a thin, metal tablet. The combination of an optional keyboard, super-bright screen and NVIDIA-powered gaming was simply too much for me to pass up.
It's been seven months, and much of that initial amazement still remains. After playing games like Grand Theft Auto III and the Tegra 3-enhanced Shadowgun, I'm convinced we tech enthusiasts live in an exciting time. Yet for all its technical prowess and flexibility, something's always nagged me about the TF Prime. I just don't trust it. Apps can randomly crash and the OS doesn't always respond to my inputs with the speed I'd expect of a quad-core device. Some apps also don't respond well if I attach the keyboard dock during use (e.g., mistaking a space bar press and an Enter key command). In those cases, I have to close down the app, attached the dock and then restart whatever program I was using. I generally avoid doing anything hugely important or time-sensitive on my Prime for fear that something will crash at the worst possible moment.
That lack of trust significantly diminishes its usefulness as a work companion, but I have few complaints about the Prime as a purely recreational device. Movies look great, the screen remains usable outdoors (in Super IPS+ mode) and the fact that I can plug in a wired Xbox controller to the keyboard dock is icing on the cake. So, no, it's not the perfect, all-in-one device I was hoping for, but the Transformer Prime remains hugely impressive. I'd still take it back in time with me and amaze our ancestor with my quirky, but fun, transforming buddy.

Again, this is not to insight another prime bashing session, this tells you why the device is so awesome-- but also relates some of the shortcomings that it has. I always intended to use the prime for companies as a replacement for a thin client-- and alternative to an ipad for those many users that want a tablet with some utility but the prime never lived up to that... trying to see what I can do with the infinity now...

And i thought it was only me that thought about "Time Machine" devices !!!
superb take on a prime i agree, but i still feel we have more to come from it. I still havnt unlocked mine yet ... and i have been sooooooooo close a number of times. I dont think its the prime per say, but rather android though ... its just not as advanced as it should be... that can be said for the apps available too though, nothing is properly geared for a tablet yet, its come on leaps in the past few years but still not where it should be.
Personally i really hope JB fixes a few of the issues with speed etc... but as soon as lilstevies Ubuntu is released, i'll be on it ASAP!
Sums up the prime perfectly! Cheers for posting this. Hope you're prepared for the tfp hate flames that should start arriving soon...

i know what you mean..
i love my prime , playing with it, tweaking etc.
but its just not stable enough for serious stuff. i remember some months ago , i went to TechED and needed a device to make notes and stuff... decided to leave the prime at home and used my sgs3 instead... cant have a crashing device screwing up my unsaved work!
However , since im running Jellybean this is a complete different story! ran cm10 unofficial and atm. baked blackbean. WOW! finally i am completely happy with this thing. havent seen a single reboot/crash ever since! and stuff will be even better when asus releases their new kernel sources.
there are still small lockups every now and then on I/O operations but they dont bother me anymore.
conclusion: asus completely failed on ICS builds. from tf101 up till tf700: unstable, slow and buggy!
even on aosp roms it was not stable... kernel issus or something?
but i dont care anymore. tomorrow im going for a holiday and will take my shiny buddy with me. trusting that it wont fail on me . playing games in the sun with a large coctail at my side :thumbup::thumbup:
Got the infinity, I admit android needs some polish but it can be viable, just needs some tweaking... helps to start with a better device with less issues. I know the infinity has some issues also but nothing like the prime and now I am on a device that asus has not abandon.... yet

A great take on the prime! With some tweaking the prime can be perfect - apart from wifi/gps I guess.
Yet another post to thank OP.... perfect description of prime
I also bought it for on the road use with the keyboard, spending countless hours away from office in nearby European countries, running company and coordinating my guys (in real time)... had original transformer 101 with keyboard before and was sold on the system and practical use, but the TF101 was soooooo slow it was like waiting for paint to dry, but at least when the paint was dry it didn't flake off or discolour.... the prime dries the paint a lot quicker but yep, we all know, you just don't know what is gonna happen during the dying/ curing process or shortly thereafter...
I sold my TF101 to a rival/colleague who was an android newbie and he is now continually thanking me and telling me how wonderful it all is.... I, in the meantime, have forsaken the prime and had to go back to my Google I/O Samsung without keyboard to be sure that nothing gets fcuked up or lost whilst working all the time on the road
Windows 8 tab with keyboard, outlook etc just seems more and more like the work solution I need when it arrives and the sexy gorgeous transformer prime will be relegated to gaming personal use and wow factor for its looks.... such a shame!!
Would love to time machine one back to start of 20th century along with one of those digital watch thingies that along with time shows ambient temperature, pulse rate, altitude, barometric pressure and the rest, "invent" the tech to fabricate the chips etc then retire as world's richest man and use my wealth to search out Steve Job's ancestors to ensure that he never happened and protect the world from the rise of the fruit company and its lawsuits
I'm off to stare through the "rectangular glass panel" whilst crunching through a "green/red fruit that is plucked from trees in orchards " and stare at the mountains.... sorry can't use the shorter words as some people have apparently exclusive rights to them

New Tablet

I'm thinking about getting a tablet for about 300 bucks, I dont want to really spend much more than that. Do you guys suggest the Prime or the TF300? Is there any other I should look at for this price range that have a quad core w/ microsd and hdmi? I was looking at maybe the refurbs on newegg, does anyone have experience with their refurbs? Thanks for any suggestions.
Don't buy another Asus

I honestly wouldn't recommend it, I'd say the least to go for a Nexus 7. This thread doesn't necessarily need to be a other long winded rant about the dreadful i/o speeds that creates lag coupled with the horrible wifi problems that come along with the aluminium back cover which can be solved using a stretch of aluminium foil pasted on your prime. Buttttttt! If typing is your kind of thing the Transformer series as a whole does seem to be the best package although there are other alternatives like a N7 or your phone coupled with a blue tooth keyboard
Honestly the Transformer Prime is a damn good tablet....if you get one of the later versions where Asus 'fixed' a few things. My WiFi isn't terrible. I can get nearly full bars all around my house which is decently sized with an excessive amount of walls. I even get service through the wet-wall (the one with all the pipes for the toilets and such) and 2 other normal walls. I/O isn't truly terrible if you don't use stock kernels. Asus fudged an amazingly powerful tablet. People that use my Prime always say "I can see why you paid $500 for that thing. It's AWESOME!". But it's up to you man. The N7 is great but has it's issues too (maybe Asus fudged another tab? who knows).
Well.. Not to say that everyone is having a bad experience with the Prime but if you're going to make a purchase, no one can say for sure what you're in stall for

Good assessment. I have an early S/N Prime (STOCK - NOT ROOTED or UNLOCKED) and it still WOW's people who play with it. Mine has decent WiFi, I can stream music from my house to my detached garage (about 40 feet from the house) with no problems. Every device will have problems; it's just the nature of the technology right now. My wife's iPad has had some issues connecting and staying connected to our network at home (old Linksys router) so maybe a lot of WiFi problems people reported right after the Primes launch was due to older wireless routers being used. Is the Prime perfect? No but it is still one of the fastest tablets so far. I received the dock this Christmas and it truly "TRANSFORMS" the whole user experience. I'm not a big fan of touchscreen keyboards so the dock was a must when I was considering a device like this. Plus the extra battery, full size USB port and full size SD card port on the keyboard set the Asus Transformer line apart from the competition IMHO. I recommend the Prime all the time.
I have to ask, aren't the nexus 7s made by Asus? I don't quite understand why you'd tell someone not to buy a prime because Asus sucks and then suggest to buy a nexus 7 if they are both manufactured by Asus.
I have had my prime since Christmas. I bought it used on swappa and at first was not impressed as it came with CM10 and on ics firmware. I did the nvflash and updated it to jellybean and loaded hairybean. I absolutely love this thing. It's fast, responsive, and all around not what people complain about on here. Did I just get a good one? Am I not as picky as other people? I don't understand what the problem is. I guess it could be worse, you could have bought a Samsung galaxy tab and not had a sd slot or jellybean. The prime blows it out of the water. I have also done side by side with ipad2 and the prime out performs it as well.
End rant. Just my 2 cents.
