Unlock bootloader with 4G? - Motorola Photon 4G

Hello, would someone kindly post a link to the best directions for unlocking the Photon and getting 4G working again?
I have been looking for 2 days and have found various conflicting posts on this topic...
My intention is to run CM9 Beta 2.
Also some of the links from this thread were on Megaupload and are therefore borked ;-(
Thanks.

Not happening on CM9. There was a way to unlock/ flash alien rom/ then relock and have 4g. You can check out this and see if there is anything useful for you http://forums.acsyndicate.net/showthread.php?2113-ACS-HOW-TO-Root-Install-CWM-Unroot-Flash-Roms-Kernel-Themes!-%2818-videos%29-1-9-12
But for CM9 you'll have to go without 4g.

Ah, thanks for the information.
I guess I really never use 4G anyway because of the battery drain. I am always either on wifi or 3G.
To be clear though, flashing the nopudding4u does indeed return to 4G? If not, what is the reason for removing pudding?
-ron

Yep, flashing nopudding re-locks the bootloader and restores 4g. For me, having 4g isn't worth the trade off of being able to flash all the great roms we have.

So relocking causes cm9 to stop working?

If you flash nopudding while running cm9 or other rom with custom kernel, your phone will not boot. You must have stock kernel installed first.

Correct flashing path?

Im coming over to the photon from E4GT, tired of Samsung.
Anyway, Im confused about the most optimal route for flashing. I see bootstrap, unlocked bootloader stuff. I see a couple kernals, a couple roms....but then there is the OTA thing that will probably occur when I power on the phone. How will affect my rom set up? Why does flashing an ext 4 kernal break the wifi functionality? Why would anyone use bootstrapped method when the bootloader is now unlocked?
Idk, Im just a little photon newb, and I will probably told to go do more reading. But honestly I have such a headache from researching these phones (new sprint customer), dealing with my E4GT probalems....so if anyone feels like typing and introducing me to photon best practices, I will "thank" them.
Thanks guys
Root, Unlock with Pudding, Flash CWM, flash away.
What about that latest OTA? Will my phone alrdy have it?
Root, unlock, flash cwm 5, flash homebase 2.1 with 4.2 update. My phone has been flawless.
Unlock = loose 4g
Even if you get the latest ota the pudding flash takes you back, then whatever the ROM you flash its based on

Bootstrap is a waste of time.

Just wondering, what problems did you have with your epic touch?
Sent from my MB855 using XDA Premium App
Flashing issues with bootstrap, possible bricking, only really good for backups... My path for flashing was pudding unlock, root with one click root from shabby, fastboot clockwork onto your phone, then place the ROM of your choice on your phone via cwm... I'm running homebase 2.1 Deblur with update 4.2, and so far not a single problem. Just make sure you know what you are doing and read read read before doing anything. Any questions feel free to pm me or one of the other members and we can help you through everything!

[Q] Is there any way to unlock the bootloader without losing 4G?

I would like to put alien rom or some other rom on my phone but I don't want to lose 4G if I don't have to. Thanks for the help.

You will lose 4G by unlocking your bootloader. However, there have been methods to run other roms and retaining 4G...it's a process for sure, and your phone won't be updated. The only exception to this is Joker's skinny ROM..check the Dev section. He has a ROM that you can flash through Boostrap Recovery...I think it has been tested, but I'm not sure: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331648

[Q] If Roms, Then No 4G

Hello.
I just got my hands on a Photon 4G.
I'm looking for alternative rom to stock.
However, I noticed that all roms have no 4G wimax. Is that correct? Or, I'm not looking hard enough.
Thank you.
To flash most ROMs you need to unlock your bootloader, flashing a new bootloader breaks 4G.
But you might not have to worry about that, what's your android version number 2.3.4 or 2.3.5?
If you updated your phone to 2.3.5 OTA, that'll lock the bootloader permanently.
I did the 2.3.5 OTA.
So, therefore, no custom roms for me?
And, apparently, Sprint/Motorola will not be updating phone to ICS.
Pretty much, I'm out of luck?

Pretty much. I know there's locked ROMs but I'm not sure if there are 2.3.5 compatible

I got tired of the OTA bugging me constantly, and was pretty sure I wasn't going to root again, because 1) I had Foxfi for WiFi tether and 2) none of the ROMS that DON'T break 4g were that interesting. So I downloaded it. But, I also fully expected to get ICS from Google, because they promised, on the official ICS upgrade list, that the Photon would be there. BUT, YET AGAIN, THEY LIED!
SO... I have an app that let me re-image my device back to pre-root before, and it was 2.3.4. Can I root, then re-image back to 2.3.4, then apply a ROM?
ALSO, I have heard of unlocking and re-locking the bootloader. Can I root, unlock the bootloader, ROM, then re-lock and restore 4g? If so, how?
And, with ALL the 4g WiMax out there, and so, little 3g even functioning these days, why can't anyone seem to not break WiMax when ROMing? I'm just asking, because I really don't know.
Thanks!
Re-locking your bootloader won't restore 4g. I don't have 4g in my area so haven't ever connected to it so not sure if its much faster. If you want to try custom a ROM then unlock and try it. Can always undo it. That's if you can actually get off 2.3.5

Photon on T-Mobile GSM

Okay...lol...I say this now and apologize 1000 times...I am sorry that im a noob. But we were all noobs at one point..So please show some compassion. -_-
1,000,000 Thanks to halfevildruid for his Photon Unlock GSM thread and Lokifish Marz for his All things MoPho! thread.
halfevildruid gave a 4 line "guide" to unlocking GSM on a photon.
1-SBF to stock base. Root your phone, unlock bootloader, install custom recovery and perform a nandroid backup of your stock rom!
2-Flash KDDI radio from recovery.
3-Flash your ROM. You may need to enable GSM/UMTS in your mobile network settings. You also may need to enable data roaming and set your APN's.
4-Profit! If all you wanted was the unlock then your done! otherwise...
I dont want to get lost in his 50 pages and wanted to reach out to the Photon portion of this community for a slower...more detailed "How-To" for someone like me. LOL.
I can read. VERY well. And if there are guides to each step needed, I will read them and complete them.
So here is MY photon...
Basic, stock photon. Rooted. Bad ESN so I dont care to ever get back to sprint. I have a t-mobile but the phone is not as beautiful as my MoPho.
Can I PLEASE get a slower, slightly more detailed explanation of how to bring my MoPho back to life with my T-Mobile Sim?

so its easy once you do it once. 1st. unlock the boot loader (http://youtu.be/YCv4RzO2324). 2nd. root your device(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xAYkejI4CE&feature=share&list=PLDE378F92431C38DF). 2.2nd get rid of the sprint verification stuff. ( google it, you'll need root explorer to do so.) 3rd. install clockworkmod( the middle of the video [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfJJ0h4d-80&feature=share&list=PLDE378F92431C38DF]). 4th. find a rom that will work with this hack.( the link is on the instructions page.) and 5th. back up using clockworkmod. 6th. flash the gsm exploit first and then flash the new rom. this is how i did it and after trial and errrrrrrrrr i finally got it but i redid it and it took me about 2 hours on a single battery while taking care of my kids and cooking. hit me up if you got questions.

I cannot unlock the bootloader. I tried but keep getting an error people say comes from already having 2.3 on the phone. Im about to smash this phone into pieces. Can't sell with a bad ESN and can't turn it into another network...
Also your unlock bootloader link is some weird "Business analytics" video LOL.

So what CAN I turn this phone into? I live in OHIO.
Revol Wireless a $50 a month unlimited everything prepaid plan, has the Photon as "Under Development" for flashing to their service.
PagePlus, a prepaid wireless in this state would not take the Photon.

that will depend if you can unlock. All you have articulated so far is that you have 2.3 which could include 2.3.4, 2.3.5, or another earlier version.

With 2.3.5 you can't do anything at the moment. That version is not unlockable as of now.

either find someone who will accept it on a CDMA network or sell it to someone who can use it outside of the US (for which the GSM is unlocked).

Maybe OP can take a look at this thread. [How-To] Unlock ATT/T-Mobile on 2.3.5 OTA[/URL] Not sure, but it might solve the problem.

That's what I did and am now using my MoPho on Tmobile network with PTEL.
On a side note you don't have to flash peetr's ROM I am just using the USC one from the first SBF(step 1).
I could not get peetr's ROM to work.

4G Not Working

Having a problem with my 4G. After I unlocked the bootloader with Team Fireball's toolkit, it was working. It stopped after I flashed a CyanogenMod Official (Nightly) ROM to it. I have tried to flash some fireball radios for it, but they won't seem to flash at all. Any ideas??

Read this post in Mdmower's thread. CM may have broken your radios. It is fixable though.

I attempted he fix but it was a no-go. I still only have 3G (eHRPD) working. What could be causing this? I even went S-OFF and reflashed the stock radio again. That didn't do anything either. I have a screenshot of what the radio settings are.

did you flash the boot image using fastboot commands, this is required if s-on or if you flash one of nitsuj's roms
Hey I'm new here. Been lurking for awhile hehe
Anyways to the point, just wanted to say how I also have the no 4G connectivity problem also. I unlocked bootloader using unlock script. and then flashed twrp recovery, then installed Venoms Viper LTE rom and then flashed the upgrade to 2.0.0. This is all I've done as far as rooting and flashing is concerned other than going back to stock to try to recover 4g usability. So I'm assuming that means I'm s-on as well. would flashing the boot image like you said help me? I have already tried replacing the SIM with a new one but that didn't help and Im not sure as to what I should try next. Not trying to hijack your post just wanted to make sure it didn't get buried and we can hopefully find a solution to our problem. Strength in numbers and all that.
By the way I had my phone since last September and then two to three weeks after ownership I went ahead and rooted it and flashed new ROM because I knew it was, well, in need lol. Haven't had 4G since then but I tweaked 3G settings so that it's usable lol.

if you flashed viper the boot image is not in the rom zip, yes you need to flash boot image it contains the kernel and wifi modules
I am S-OFF. But I tried switching my CDMA Subscription (CyanogenMod 10.1) (Settings --> Wireless & Networks - More --> Mobile Networks --> CDMA Subscriptions) from RUIM/SIM to NV. That did fix the 4G connectivity problem, but it disabled calling and texting abilities. What could this mean? And what boot IMG were you talking about?

Now I have other theories. But don't know if they're right. For one, I looked up a sim card reader (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.okata.app.simcardlist) and it says my radio is CDMA. Doesn't even mention LTE at all. Not sure, but yeah.
