[Q] im on Telus with an unlocked rogers Note, will i get ICS - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I heard that firmware updates come from the carriers. I have an unlocked rogers Galaxy note. However, im using a telus sim.
will i get the ICS?
Thanks for any help

Flip a coin and let us know how it comes up.
It isn't even out for the International version of the Note. That will come first. Then each carrier has to customize it. That will take some time. Holding your breath is not recommended.

Uh go ask Telus. Only good way to find out. Or even better call, cause store representatives are sometimes incorrect.

If you keep it stock, I am sure when Rogers ICS drops, you can download and flash the official update.
If you are rooted, chances are, you will get it sooner.

[Q] Help Needed

Hi All,
I am a newbie here and I am not sure if my question makes any sense. Couple weeks back, I bought an Atrix 4g (US version), an unlocked version (the seller told me that this phone is unlocked using AT&T code) and I am using it with Vodafone (India) sim. It works perfectly and so far I didnt face any problems with this phone. But last week, I got an alert in my phone saying that software update (2.3.4.5.141) is available for AT&T users and enable wifi to download. However, I didnt download and install the update as I was not sure why is it saying the update is available only for AT&T users. Also wherever I read about this software udpate, the name 'AT&T users' comes along with that.
So my doubt here is, what will happen if I, who is not an AT&T user, download and install the software update in my phone ? will it cause any issues in the phone (like getting locked again or bricking the phone)
I have not done any modification like rooting or installing custom ROM and things like that and I am using the phone as I recieved it.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I would personally NOT update the phone since the update would probably relock the phone for the ATT carrier. The update is great I heard.
By the way, when you boot up the phone, does the phone say unlocked in the top left corner of the screen on the Motorola dual core screen?

I've even heard people saying that updating using AT&T, from any rom with an unlocked bootloader, can cause bricks. I wouldn't update under any circumstances.
I hear people are having problems with the 2.3.6 AT&T update anyways, like APN/mobile network issues.

The phone the op means is unlocked by carrier not bootloader.

I believe that the update does not block your phone. The chip lock, as far as I know, is independent of the device firmware update. In your case, I would upgrade.

Oh, my bad. I think I realized that later. Sorry.
If the guy/girl you got the phone from stated they used an "AT&T" code, it might have been unlocked the official way, through AT&T, meaning you wouldn't have any problems updating. Just note that if you update, you may have problems like other people are having. I'm not sure if AT&T's fixed it, or if the problems were from the official update even. It may have been a beta build. I don't know.
I'd say go for it. Just note that rooting might be a problem after you update, if you decide to root it later. I'm not sure if we have a method of rooting for it yet. (I can't look it up right now, sorry)

[Q] How to Debrand a Bell Galaxy Note?

Hello guys just wanted to know how to debrand the note from bell as it is running a little slugishh and i also want to remove all the bell apps without rooting thanks for the help...
What do you mean Debrand it? It litterally has no branding. You're talking about changing the firmware?
It does have branding likeee all the bell apps and stuff all the extra stuff...
Sent from my SGH-I717M using XDA
Just the word that you used is odd, because branding literally means to "mark" something, or it means a certain type. So automatically when I read the title I was thinking you wanted to remove a carrier logo branded on the phone which it clearly doesn't have.
Anyhow, I digress.
To remove all that just root, get Titanium backup and remove all pre-loaded apps you don't want. This topic has already been discussed and you shouldn't have trouble finding out how to remove those apps.
Check the development section and you'll find more information there.

There hasnt been any update yet. We are all patiently awaiting ICS. (Which will come from our carriers.) The only way I can see you getting rid of the bell bloatware is to either Root the phone and freeze those apps with TiBu. Or Flash a Rom which still requires rooting. Dude if you want them gone you're gonna need to root. However I could be wrong there may be a flashable Odin files that get rid of all the bloatware. Im not sure. Go look in development. I just don't know how to tell you any other way. Also don't know if you know this but the International Version is not tied to any Carrier, You can look into that if you're not happy with the Bell one. I also forgot to mention, I have one on Rogers and Bell. The Rogers one seems to be slightly faster. But I only have 2 to compare so I dunno. Maybe you can always sitch carrier if your contract is new.

I know you do not want to root my man but I will pay you $30 right now to upload the Bell stock system and then you can go right back to the unrooted version. I am desperate!! No Wi-fi hotspot, no NFC, S Planner, AT&T sucks!!
Yea waiting for ics is unpredictable now...
And like u said rogers note is faster thats why i want to debrand it i used my friends rogers note n there is a good differencee i got this from bell but got it unlocked cause i am with rogers so even if i can Get rogers firmware that would be fine too just need to find a wayy...

Rooting is your only way afaik with Bell and Rogers. My Telus Note came with ZERO Telus bloatware and I mean ZERO unless I missed something. Luckily, in Canada, Telus, Rogers and Bell did not put their name on the Note like how AT&T removed the Samsung name and used AT&T up on top of the phone. Also WIFI Hotspot (tethering) option is there and not removed. I use tethering all the time to tether to my tablet and several of my Sony Vaios. Lastly, NFC is there and is working.

SGH-i1717R screen on SGH-i717M hardware

Hello All!
I bought a Galaxy Note I717 from Kijiji this week and was wondering about something.
When I take the battery out of the phone, the sticker says: SGH-I717M (that's Bell Canada hardware)
But when I turn on the phone, the first image that appears shows: SGH-I717R (that's Rogers software)
I have rooted, and tried several ROMs so far and I still get the initial screen showing up as SGH-I717R.
So my question is, how do I get rid of that initial screen or change it to another carrier, such as Bell?
Thanks!

Does it actually bother you?
I can live with it. I was curious to find out if someone knew of a fix for it.
Thanks
I see I wouldn't worry about it. Load up a Paranoid ROM on it and enjoy your phone. You'll hardly reboot ur phone anyways.
If you install non rooted stock bell firmware with bell kernel and modem, it will change your boot screen to I717M.
Well, Your forum heading asks about hardware screen replacement compatibility, lil confusion there.

The only way to change back is by flashing an Odin firmware of bell you can get them on Sammobile.com

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I have a question that is (somewhat) relevant. My Note is the SGH-I717R, for Rogers. Am I allowed to flash At&T Note ROMs for my device? In other words, does the "R" make a difference? Thanks in advance.

Rezound south korea

So I am leaving Montana for south Korea soon and was pretty excited to learn that my Rezound is global capable. The only thing is I am unsure if it will work on a Korean SIM card, or how to do so. I am s-off running the first leaked ics ruu. Do I need to ruu to the global firmware? Or will any gsm capable roms work without a firmware update? Also, if there's any one out there who has been to south Korea and could give me some tips on providers to choose from it would be appreciated.
Sent from my ... Rezound
You need to install the official Global RUU, leaks can be problematic because they prevent you from getting OTAs on stock rom and may not be the latest, most stable software.
I think there have been like 2 official firmware upgrades and several leaks between what you are running and global.
You do need a GSM enabled ROM, and one that is based on the global firmware. Simplicity or Newts One XXX 5.08 may be good options for you if u want to stick with a Sense ROM.
You may still need to call Verizon re: international calling, although I wouldn't mention I was rooted.

Thanks for helping. I was a little unclear in my original post however; I actually am running Newts One XXX 5.1.0 currently (awesome by the way). What I am wondering though is this; will the fact that I am not on the global firmware mean that I will need to RUU update in order to get service with a South Korean provider. I do not plan on trying to remain with Verizon as I will be in South Korea for more than a year.

You will have to ruu to global firmware to obtain global radios to work with the global Rom

rezound in rok
I'm also heading to the rok and hoping to use my rezound. I'm on stock ics ota. I'm going to see what I get on a stock rom before I do any unofficial releases, but I expect to drop SMS capabilities or maybe data like you see in the states with a T-Mobile sim in. I arrive in Korea on the 31st so I'll update sometime late next week and let you know. I've been to Korea before and I believe we will have to go with SK Telecom as our carrier because it is the only GSM network. The other networks are cdma to the best of my knowledge. Hopefully my next update will be from my phone on a Korean network!
Rezound in South Korea update
In Korea now. I just flashed my phone from a stock OTA ICS, unrooted, s-on over to the Global RUU found on Androidpolice.
I have tried to buy just a sim card from several stores, SK, KT Olleh etc, and the stores all say that I have to go to the headquarters stores located in Seoul, Yongsan Train Station on the top floor. Apparently this is the ONLY way to get a sim for a global phone, other than having a korean national get one for you and give it to you. This weekend I will be going to the headquarters stores and getting a sim, Other problems you may run into are related to being a foreigner in Korea. They will sometimes not want to sell you a phone on a contract because you as a foreigner could disappear at any time without paying the bill. So, they will try to get you to buy prepaid. I don't want to deal with prepaid anything, but that may be a viable option to get a SIM card easily. Just buy a reallllly cheap prepaid phone that has a sim in it, pull the sim and throw it in your global enabled device. Unless you speak Korean, navigating to the headquarters and getting what you want may prove a bit difficult. Fortunately, I do speak Korean, so I will let you know how it goes.
I will update again once I actually have a Sim in my phone!
Thanks for the valuable information so far. I will be arriving there at the end of November and am looking forward to hearing more about how It's going for you there.

got a sim, no data!
Finally got a sim from KT Olleh today. The girl at the counter didn't believe me that the phone would work, but I got her to do it anyway. By the way, don't try to set up service for a phone anywhere in Korea on a weekend. They cannot activate a new phone unless its a weekday. So anyway, got it all setup and the girl sits there and plays with my phone for a while without saying anything to me. Then she tells me that the calling and texting is fine but the phone won't get a data signal. I asked her to set the APN, and she said she did. I checked it out and she had put in the KT APN as alwayson.ktfwing.com Looks right to me, and she seemed to know what she was doing for the most part. Then she started to go on about how Korea runs on CDMA for the most part and not GSM yadda yadda.
So, I have a Rezound, working for incoming and outgoing calls and text on KT Olleh, but no data signal at all. I might repost a similar message in another forum topic to see if any gurus have any advice on how to get it working. Also going to do some more research. I'm new to this but there is tons of information out there. I will post again once I have resolution or give up and buy a new phone!
PS Phones in korea can be REALLY expensive. Dropped 850 on my wifes LG phablet (optimus VU2)!!! Equivalent to the instinct in the states I think?
didn't flash twice
So, I am a phone noob, and did a lot of reading last night. Saw that most people flash rezounds twice anytime putting on new firmware etc. I think I will try that tonight and see if I pick up the data signal.
The ruu's generally need to be flashed twice. However I did not need to do so going to the global, the ruu automatically took care of everything.

Some helpful information that KT Olleh has to say about using a non-korean phone in Korea.
http://expatblog.kt.com/71
The rezound may not have the radio frequency that network uses. That would be the main problem as to why you aren't picking up data.

I am currently in Seoul and have rented an Evergreen Mobile Sim Card that works on KT Olleh's network. I am curious as to whether you were ever able to get your Rezound to work with their Data network, and if so, how? Mine works with Olleh Wifi for free but will not even recognize the 3G, despite my having changed the APN settings, and even going to the Evergreen Mobile office in Yeoksa-dong today (they said they couldn't get it to work after an hour of fiddling with it themselves).
Suggestions? Do I have to root?
Oh, and the link in your above post has expired. Could you summarize what KT said?
Thanks!

[Q] What Are My Options? - i717R stock 4.0.4 Rooted/Unlocked WindMobile

Before I get in to details about my conundrum, let me explain that I have experience with flashing all sorts of stuff with HTC phones, so lay it on me.
Now for what im running.
Rogers i717r, with rogers 4.0.4 on Wind Mobile. Voice/data works...ish
I purchased the phone from a shoddy cellphone liquidator (i know, i know, but I NEEDED a phone)
I poked around in the phone for a bit, the flash counter was at 6, and ICS blaze.zip was on the sd card.
The Baseband is Unknown.
I Have rooted it.
always shows 4 bars and wont let calls go through sometimes in 3g mode.
ive searched though this forum for a week, i see alot of back and forth.
Can i install a ICS modem on jb?
does the flash counter have a limit?
should i just stick with ICS stock and try modems?
get me running in tiptop shape, and i shall donate.

I am not on Rogers, but I think there are many that have great success with Blaze running a JB rom. Trying different modems will have no ill effects, it will either work or it wont. There are many on Rogers that carry a pocket full of modems with them and swap them out depending on the area.
As for the flash limit, if there was one, im sure I broke it long ago.

Im not on rogers either, i need this phone to function on AWS.(wind mobile)
I fiddled around with the APN, and put as one setting instead of separating Internet and mms, it tends to wake up the "4g" faster.
so yeah, i should be fine flashing cyanogen 10.0 with the blazeICS modem? to be connected to a aws network.
