[Q] How to Install CWM after Root? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I just got my new At&T Galaxy S2 after like 2 years of having my Sony Xperia X10i. First thing I did was root my phone so I can use my titanium backup restore I made from my X10i, using this method: http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s2-newworks-on-all-galaxy-s2-variants/
I've read alot of threads but I can't seem to find a single thread that explains how to get ONLY CWM for my stock rom without having to install a non stock kernel. I really want to install CWM so I can start testing some ROMS. Any help?

Just get a non stock kernel.

Which is your favorite kernel? Or the one you consider is the best? I've seen there are two methods with something called Heimdall and another Odin, which should I use? Could you post some links?

Ok let me help you
Download mobile odin lite:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=940670&d=1331396670
And the flash kernel of the i777:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=798186&d=1322517562
In the attachments of my post I'll upload the kernel of EntropyDD that most find most stable (2/15/2012) and here's Siyah Kernel 2.6.9 the one that I use, I find it the most stable: http://www.gokhanmoral.com/public/files/siyahkernel/Siyah-v2.6.9-att.tar
****(If you decided on Entropy's you'll have to put the zImage that's inside the zip file in the sd card instead of the zip file)
Transfer Mobile odin lite and i777 flash kernel to your sd card (I myself created a folder named apps for this kind of things)
Also transfer one of the kernels you want (Again, I created a folder called either kernels tar or kernels zip for these kind of things)
****(If you decided on Entropy's you'll have to put the zImage that's inside the zip file in the sd card instead of the zip file)
Go to your phone, enable unknown sources (In apps settings) install odin lite and the flash kernel through my files app or other file managing app you got.
Open odin lite, select kernel, select the kernel you put previously on your phone's card, then select flash firmware!
Tadaa!

OMG Hermano!! Thanks for such a great guide, so easy to follow!! Wow I appreciate you talking your time to explain this. Gracias Hermanazo!!

@Biporch, it was very nice of you to do that, sadly I predict you're going to get flamed for creating yet another writeup of something that can be found in the very first post on the General page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1511838 (then "how to flash custom binaries", and step 3a).
The idea of that walkthrough guide (as I understand it) is so we don't end up with a 1000 "how do I do this" walkthroughs with duplicate information. Pointing people to the information that already exists will save us drowning in repeats.
It was still nice of you though.

Far more effort than I would have put into it...

Meh, I don't really mind helping, and I've heard that that's the safest way to flash a kernel.
It's my wasted time at all.
Who knows, he could have looked at the how to thread, but got lost.

I would have helped if this wasn't already in the sticky. Smh.
Welcome aboard!

For all those flamers, for starters the walkthrough sucks because the names aren't specific for what they are supposed to be directed to. If you go to the Xperia X10 forums you would shut up when you see what a good walkthrough really is. Besides I didn't even think of looking into the custom binaries because I was looking for a link that would say something like "how to use Odin to flash kernels with CWM" and the "How to flash custom Firmware/ROM" link is wrong. So stop flaming and shut up if you're a smart ass who's been in this forum for a long time and thinks they know everything and don't want to help anyone. As I said I'm new here and I was great at flashing in my Xperia X10 which I suppose you aren't because you've never tried it, same as me on this forum.
Special thanks to Biporch for being so kind and talking his time to explain this as he did, not like the bunch of flamers who waste their time complaining instead of helping.
Anyways love my new phone!! It's like another universe compared to my Xperia X10. Amazing phone we all have!!!

A) if you thought this was flaming, you are in for a world of hurt - especially if this is going to be your reaction.
B) What you seem to mean is that you didn't have the patience to click though a few links in the sticky in order to be educated on what you needed to do. The reading wouldn't have hurt you and who knows what you might have learned that you could use later?
Enjoy your phone.

Ok I'm guilty of posting stupid questions and being a general pain in the ass. But I have come to realize that this forum wasn't created for people like me who want to come in and benefit from the work that the people whom this forum was created for made.
This forum is here for developers and people knowledgeable in the code that makes it all possible.
The rest of us are just leeching.
We need to have some respect, and understand that they have no obligation to help us.

Me being new to all this. This was one of the most helpful posts I have read on here. Many thanks to Biporch for the easy explanation. I wish they were all like his. Sometimes I get confused from reading to much. It all gets worded differently and thats when it all falls apart, for me anyway. But Im learning. Thats the most important part!!

Ohh Heavenly XDA Fascinate forums please guide my rooting and CWM install!

Hello....
So i found a guy on craigslist to trade my Droid 2 for the Fasicnate, drove thirfty miles to his house and listend to him freak out for 35 mins as i explained the benifits of my droid 2 and it being rooted and he seriously begain hyperventelating because he was dead straight afraid of being arrested........ I was about to just.... i dont know, the word run came to mind... Anyway.
WHat a beautiful phone, i mean it you guys have got something here, and im glad i added this to my growing list of android device's this is my fifth since my first love The G1.
Anyways,
I presumed and though i could install Cyanogenmod on it that was the immediant reason i got it, i didnt do any reaseachr and now know that u can but it runs really ruff and isnt supported... so.
I modded via this cyanogen wiki
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Samsung_Fascinate:_Rooting
i got all the way to the part about installing rom manager and flashing CWM,
However i went to do this (yes im rooted) and all i get is when i flash cwm and i try to reboot into cwm from rom manager to make a backup is i get to the samsung 2e recovery screen ..
A little more research i see something that i need to install or excuse me i need a program called odin, and i need the cwm packaged via this thread but the CWM package is no longer hosted...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788099
But, one im not completly sure that is what i need to do and two im seein what i think is a bunch of diff versions of baseband like D101 ect However i see on mine that the last of my baseband is Dh12 actually its all s:i500.04 v.dh12
SHould i be downgrading here? And its best to assume while i have rooted and taken the virginity of the G1, Eris, Droid, Droid 2 Droid X and now this beyond what i have described here is my limited experience with this phone.
Also bear in mind that this phone was factory reset when i got it, and was 100% virgin. It is now rooted but that is it. I really wanted to get back to "my roots" like my G1 and have a fully modable phone from kernal on up and was stoked to get this. But im lost and i cant seem to find much help else where, or what appears to be people telling me to reroot and i know that is incorrect.
Can you all point me in the right direction please!
My sincere apprecation and thanks for your help and acceptace of my sporatic typeing.
Don't have a chance to read this atm but before you get flamed..you should post this in the general or Q and A section instead..

Instructions.
First, welcome to the Fascinate forums. Second, please try to faimilariaze yourself with the rules here. This thread should have gone in Q&A and you are quite likely to get flamed for it eventually.
As for your questoin-- We don't have a fully functioning AOSP, CM6, or 7 yet but what we have is pretty close. If you can live without MMS, Camcorder, and BT headset then you should give one them a shot. If not, stick with one of the Touchwiz builds such as Nitro's Evil Fascination or Adrylnalyn's Superclean.
Nitro has linked you to all the necessary software. As for using Odin, please reference this thread.

I would strongly reccommebd flashing Nitro's Evil Fascination Froyo rom and perhaps one of his themes once you get that far. You won't regret it. Trust me. Super sexy and super fast and he's very friendly and knowledgable. Keeps all his work updated on a regular basis too. Good luck and congrats on your new Fascinate!

Got all the links you could ever ask for from nitro. Just install Odin on your comp and install the Samsung drivers. Then just go to the link for the older cwm and d/l the necessary file.
Remove battery from the phone and while you're holding the volume down.button plug the phone into.your.computer. it'll show a yellow android and say downloading.
Click PDA and choose the file you downloaded for cwm 2.5 and click start. Once it.says pass on Odin you're done.
Even easier, get one of the packagaes from one of these threads it includes adryns froyo rom, the modem for.froyo and the recovery. I don't feel like finding the link but if you get that it's easy its just one big file that you flash with Odin (the same.way you do with cwm) and when its done you got a froyo fascinate with a solid touchwiz rom from adryn

As for the flaming i could care less it shows lack of maturity and what someone wants to bash me for is simply a waste of time. I dont care what some moron in his moms basement who is jumping from tab to tab from porn, to there wow or pokemon fetish and XDA. One would hope because of the intregrity here they would get banned.. Anywho.
And lastly the reason for posting here is because i didnt figure that the forum mentioned was classified for my question because it has nothing to do with "general" and everything to do with "development".. So, my apoligies if i was wrong and ill attempt to look a little better next time.
Thank you.

Hey Mortland,
Welcome to these forums. I am still fairly new here at XDA. Just to clarify and help you understand what everyone was referring to. I believe if I read them correctly, the rules about the Development section say posts and especially new threads in the development section should be limited to things that are directly related to development of a ROM, kernel, or MOD. This is so the development forum is used for improvements to existing ROMs, kernels, or MODS, or development of new ROMS, kernels, or MODS so the developers doing this work do not have to wade through a laundry list of threads or non-development questions in order to get the information they need. So if you have questions about development, or want to report a bug or problem you have discovered with a ROM, kernel, or MOD, then you come here and post. If it is a question on how to install or use a ROM, kernel, or MOD, then I guess it is supposed to go over in the Q&A section. I know it can seem kind of confusing, so the only reason for me posting is to hopefully help clear up any of the confusion. Hope this has helped, and definitely follow nitrogliceryne's advice and help. Good luck.
Mods and devs,
Sorry if this long post has cluttered things up even more. Just trying to help.

Can't we just request that MOD move it to the Q&A section? Especially since some good links were posted there? No sense being a wanker about it, except that it can be fun if you woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.
I know it makes all the "experienced" users feel good to bash every new guy that posts in the Development Thread but something really should have occurred to the community at large by now:
If this is happening something like 15 times per day, maybe the thread title should be renamed to Developers ONLY or Not for Q&A (or something like that)...although I'm kind of guessing that it's an auto-naming thing that they have set up for each new device that gets listed on the forums, so that might not be an option.
Usually I'm not very into getting threads moved when they're placed where they are but this thread is just straight ridiculous. Hyperventilating, seriously?
We need to have some sort of HTML implemented that allows any user to click the button and flag the thread for being moved. Not flagged for being inappropriate or reporting, just flagged for need of being moved to another section.

You need to look in this [Guide]

It has The answers, info and links I believe you need to get to over the hump...
Sometimes it may help to print those instructions and cross off steps as you do them,, to make sure you don't accidentally overlook anything

[Q] How to put roms on etc

hi all i just got my galaxy s2 today and have no idea where to start with putting a rom on ot anything. so any help would be great thanks
First you need to be rooted(your phone not you)and then go to the Development section and you will find a list of different ROMs.Its a matter of finding what you want in a ROM and downloading and trying each one.Usually the ROM page has the download and install instructions writen on it.You need to be rooted to have CWM.Ill leave a link to my ROM so you can see what I mean.Below the different ROM versions you will see install instructions. If your not sure what root is let me know
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1290468
Spend some time using your phone to get used to It before flashing. This will give you a better idea of what you like and don't like about it.
Armed with that info you can read up on each custom Rom to see if they offer what you want.
Read read and when you think you are ready to flash read some more.

X2 read alot, play with the phone, figure things out. There is so much to learn so you don't turn your phone into a brick. Rooting means you become a superuser, you take ownership so you can customize your phone.

Please don't even think about flashing a custom rom or rooting your phone until you're comfortable/confident enough to do it without making posts like this.
I have seen so many people in your situation on here stuff their phone up over the last few weeks because they were in too much of a hurry to mess with their phone.
AceOfClubs (and others) has given you good advice, heed it :-|
Read the CFRoot thread until you are so confident with rooting the phone that you could do it in your sleep, and then root your phone with the CFRoot kernel that corresponds to your current stock kernel. Not before.
From there, read the various development threads about different roms/kernels, get to know the various features/advantages of each (and ask questions if necessary...about the rom/kernel itself, not the process of flashing same) and then when you've settled on a rom or kernel and you're completely confident about the flashing process, flash it.
Doing this will mean you'll get it right the first time. This will result in:-
A) You not posting yet another "OMG mah fone is teh brikked helpz !" thread.
B) You not having to do without using your phone for x days (weeks) should you mess it up.
Clear ? Good

Root is changing the kernel in your phone to give you super user access which is needed to flash ROMs and firmwares. Also along with flashing there are other things to read up on like an EFS/IMEI file backups which are vital, also nandroid and Titanium backups. As you can see there are alot of good people here willing to help with good advice and all are correct in saying that you shouldnt rush into things.Take your time, read up and dont be afraid to ask questions.Play with your phone and when you know it well enough and have seen enough threads on what and what not to do then you can take the first step and root.First read up on rooting then EFS/IMEI backups and why they are needed. The rest will come in time.Id rather see you here asking questions and not in another thread saying "Help I just bricked my phone!!"

That's KI4, he claims to be on K14.
He also didn't say why he needs that specific insecure kernel.

Seems either you cannot follow instructions or something .
Find your kernel match as near to a cwm kernel as per the instructions flash with Odin = rooted whats the problem .
Why do you want root when you are having extreme difficulty with the very basics and dont seem able to or want to read and understand anything at all .
Help! Which file do I use ?
Listen closely, for I will say zis only once!
Go to Settings -> About phone -> Kernel Version. Note the string present there:
2.6.35.7-I9100XXKG1-CL349526
What matters most (KG1) in this case, is in bold. Try to find the matching file under downloads:
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG1-v4.1-CWM4.zip
The XX and OXA identifiers are not that important. Usually a "KG1" kernel is a "KG1" kernel, and that is that. Sometimes (pretty rare) it happens there will be multiple different kernels with the same name in different firmwares, that are actually different. If this happens, they are usually only very minor changes and you should expect them to still be fully compatible. I include the "XX" and "OXA" identifiers so the very advanced users can deduce from which full firmware I have taken the kernel file.
Don't worry too much, just find the matching download and use it. What if there is no matching download ?
Instructions - ODIN (long)
- Follow these instructions to the letter. Do not touch any buttons or checkboxes that are not listed below to touch!
- Unzip the attached CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.zip
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start ODIN
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar
- Put your phone in download mode
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure repartition is NOT checked
- Click the START button
- Wait for the phone to reboot

I don't suppose any has the correct jkay settings apk I need for wxk14 do they? I can't find a link that works

I don't know why I'm bothering to respond to you considering your behaviour in this thread, but I'm just going to go out on a limb here and guess that you're not on K14 at all, and are in fact on KI4.
If that is indeed the case, the download links in JKay's thread work perfectly well for both the themes and the V13.1 settings APK.
I wish there was a "vote to ban" button, because you're a fidiot, and no that's not a typo. This community has no place for people like you.
Can't believe you made me sign in just to reply to this... But you sir are a total ****, People like you that can't understand simple instructions and follow rules and guidelines do not belong on this earth. Your IQ must be around 5 if that. Why you would even want to root your phone i don't know. Because anything from now onwards will be a little bit more complicated than simple rooting, (Installing a ROM etc.)
So please, do us all a favour and leave this forum, everything you could possibly need is in the search function.. But it sounds like you need a search function just to find the search function...

I didn't say anything about asking questions where you downloaded the kernels.
I said to read the directions provided in the thread where you got the kernels from.
Don't mean to offend, but If you can't follow the threads, then your not ready to root your phone yet,"you will more likely brick it". READ and then READ again..
Dont run before you can walk.
Also, MAKE SURE you are trying to use kernels (and/or firmwares when you move onto firmwares) meant for your phone. If you got these kernels from a thread in the I9100 forums, make SURE you have an I9100 by looking on the label under your device's battery.
I have seen a ton of people flash kernels and firmwares/ROMs intended for a different device, and the results have varied from the device not functioning quite right, to an outright brick that had to get sent back to Samsung.
The easiest way to root your s2 is zegrush exploit, works for me no problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582
and you dont have to use odin so flash counter doesnt increase
threads
Im not an expert on phones but i know quite a bit about computers ,ive looked at the threads and followed the instructions and even whatched a video.ive un ziped many a file but when i un zip the kernel i get a zimage file. where i got the kernels from no body has this problem thanks am i doing somthing wrong with this zip file because i cant use it as a zip thank
I was confused too before rooting but you learn quick and understand after you do it. I dont know much myself but I dont think you need to download any kernels to root, at least I didnt. just use the link in my post above and it will be easy, yes it is scary the first time!!!

Pretty much every kernels here dont require you to unzip them, you flash them as they are. As everyone above says, read the instructions. I also know a lot of computers, but sadly pretty much no knowledge of that is useful for phones, unless you know programming.

What thread are you getting the file from, and reading? Cause it REALLY seems you are not following the instructions correctly. The zImage file IS the kernel, but it has to be in a .tar file to flash in Odin. So it sounds as if you've unzipped it twice instead of just once, maybe.
kernels
I was sent to this site from android pit,to get my kernels to root my samsung galaxy s2. i have followed android pit rooting video exactly its not hard but the kernels you get from this site are not the same as on the android pit video. And they tell you to get them from here. why
dont these kernels work thanks

I just TOLD you what you were doing wrong. I'm starting to think you really have no business doing this yourself.
If you end up with a zImage file, you unzipped it one too many times. Put the file that CONTAINS the zImage file into Odin.
root access thanks
thank mate i was zipping it twice ive just got root access the last message i wrote was before you told me what i was doing wrong thanks
thanks again ive just unlock my phone to any network

[Q] {Q] UK Orange I1900p running 4.0.3, rooting and Jelly bean

He there,
I will open by saying I am a complete novice at this but can follow instructions to the letter as long as I have them in front of me.
I have a Galaxy S2 on the Orange network currently running ICS 4.0.3
I have tried rooting it, following the instructions from one or two threads here and seemed to achieve little success "Titanium Backup says NO!"
Thankfully, I haven't bricked it XD
I was wondering if any of the experts here could give me either a link to working instructions on the method to root and perhaps even install a JB based kernel to this particular device in the S2 family or would be so gracious as to spell it out for me here?
Many thanks.

Ummm thanks, I think. But this is exactly what I didn't need. I need follow able instructions not vague statements in broken Internet speak.
Is there anyone out there willing/able to do that?
What you "need" to do is read the rules and stop expecting to be spoon fed.
Maybe Sun90 thought you had done just a teensy weensy bit of the donkey work for yourself,so youd understand what hes saying.
Ahh yes, this explains EVERYTHING.
For your information I have tried doing the legwork myself. What that got me was clockworkmod SEEMING to install but then being informed by titanium still informing me my phone was still unrooted.
I had wondered where I was going wrong since I am already aware there are specific complications with my particular handset. If you had read my original post rather than just jumped in to attack me then you would have known that.
But then I am not surprised at this reaction, a friend warned me there are a lot of snarky jerks on here that like to shoot people with valid questions down, I had hoped to prove him wrong. Maybe I still will, in part.
Well a friend told me theres a lot of lazy twats that come here and expect to be spoon fed....not prepared to spend their own time learning.
People help other people out here, and the normal courtesy is to thank people. Now if you dont understand what they mean,a normal person would ask them to expand on or explain their answer......not be a sanctimonius git like you.
Now,read your 1st post again, some crap about you can do stuff/guides if "its layed out in front of you".Then you say youve had that twice and youve still failed. Now you want someone to spend their time with attempt no.3.
Hope you like your orange p model,I stupidly bought the plain unbranded one....lol.
.youtube.com/watch?v=Vw_za0mQorw (add www) this should give you some idea but you need to do a bit of googling and a lot of xda reading
