video not focusing and other camera issues - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Has anyone else noticed issues with the video camera not focusing and making videos blurry.
On another note, the camera doesn't perform too well in the dark, with pictures having a lot of noise in them.
In daylight, the PQ is the best I've seen on a smartphone, hopefully Sony releases a fix in the near future.

Normal mode (Scene mode: OFF) - yes, there is a noise

I will test the video later on....
As for night shots, it always takes some patience and settings to make a good one.

Yes, now that you mention it, there was once it could not focus in video mode no matter how long I held the half-press. I switched to photo mode to focus, then back to video mode again.

I've been having issues with focus in video mode. It seems to be hunting in light conditions, and oddly when the face detection is working (the box appears around the face) it still fails to focus on the subject.

The continuous auto focus on this phone is intentionally slow, this is way better then an instant focus that constantly zooms in and out to hold the focus which looks horrible.
My other phone Droid 3 does this noticeably, constantly focusing slightly zooming in and out to maintain the quality.
If you view something with a darker colour then its surroundings, the zoom will focus correctly shortly after.
-smc

I'm used to slow auto focus, but the problem I have is failing to focus at all. It identifies the heads, but the heads remain out of focus. The focus hunts, and will gain focus for a second or so, then revert back to blur-o-vision... I the most recent situation, the subject was against a white background so nothing to confuse the sensor.

Talking about the camera, i saw a video review and the phone being reviewed had touch focus how did they set it like that?

When in the camera, press your menu button and you will get an additional menu come up with the option for Capturing method. It's in there.

I had smile detection on so the focus option was grey out. Thanks for that

Im also having issues with the camera not focusing as it should. Taking a photo can sometimes take up to 8-10 seconds when I have to repress the camera button. Is that a software issue or hardware? In other words, should I return the phone to the store or wait for the ICS to (hopefully) fix it?

if your video is blurry while recording try to press camera shutter half way and it will focus automatically
if there is lot of noise while taking picture try to change focus mode from the face dectection to the single mode focus and that will improve the picture quality especially if not taking a poirtrate picture!!
--------------------------
there is no rapid focus in the xperia s the focus is half automatic so this is work the same way as the focus in camera before half way camera shutter and it will dramatically improve the quality of the video

anyone else not able to take a pic from the home screen by just holding down the camera button? its works in standby mode but not in homescren mode..

I had this problem I went onto the camera app n then went into settings and changes the focus setting to single focus n my problem is solved hope that helps some people

Tweaking the camera settings

Two things I've found with the camera now with a few weeks of casual use - one, it produces blurred images unless i hold my breath and hold the thing as still as possible while it records the image. Even then it might have half the image clear and the other blurred, like its taking too long to poll all the pixels. It also seems to produce dark images even with the brighness setting on +2.0.
I have it set to take 3 mp images, on superfine quality, recording to the microdrive. Does anyone think any of these settings might be contributing to the problem? Maybe recording to memory and/or taking lower quality pics will fix the blurring (or half blurring) issues? I would hate to lower the quality.
Just curious what others have found as the best settings.
Ive tried so many different conbinations of settings and I almost always end up with a blurry picture, unless the lighting conditions are perfect and I mean perfect. If it's even slightly dark, or any form of artificial light, I get blurry images
i find the flash is useless n the device has to be resting on something and subject has too be still else it just dosent work!!!!!
If you get it right (and using the centre of the joystick as a camera shutter release button helps) then you can get some pretty decent lowlight shots.
Exposure is still horrible, but I've seen worse (universal was much worse than this).

I've already switched to using the joystick's OK button as the shutter release, after holding the camera button half-way to prefocus. I wish the regular OK button below the joystick would work since it has a shorter throw (therefore less chance of motion), but it appears the camera doesn't read that button. < rant > On a related note, I wish the browser button would be disabled while the camera is active, I've lost track of how many times I've pressed it while gripping the right side in order to press the camera button half-way. Then I have to close the browser, interrupting the photo session. < /rant >
I just switched to recording to memory and a few test shots under my desk where its dark appear to be clear, even when I wiggled the unit while taking the shot. I guess a few weeks more of use will determine if its a solution or not. If not, then I'll try moving the quality or size settings downward.
Still interested if anyone has found any "good" settings.

Manual Focus for Camera?

Whenever I try to macro focus on something, I see the camera adjusting its lens, and I can see the clear image but it quickly goes to be blurry.
Is there some sort of tweak to allow manual focus through like a slider or something?
I have the same issue since I've had the phone. Still haven't figure out how to take a great photo with this phone lol
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
Yeah, it's extremely annoying. I hate when you're doing a video and it won't keep full detail sometimes. There has to be a way to control it all manually.
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
That would be awesome if someone could do it
if areas are too bright the camera will go dark, just tap on a dark part of image and it will brighten and focus automatic
helps to take better pics
manual focus on an area anytime by just tapping on that area and then take pic with screen button
hardware button is nice but will sometimes lead to a shake of hand and give blurry pic.
this evo has the best camera in a phone ive had to date, like the extra features too
I have the same experience trying to focus for macro shots. Manual focus would be a cool feature! (not to be confused with tapping to set the autofocus point)
I know that this isn't the same thing as manual focus, but what you can do is tap to focus on a point and then hold down the physical camera button halfway. What that does is lock in the focus and exposure settings until you press the shutter all the way down. If you are familiar with Nikon cameras it's similar to the AF-S focus mode, just also combined with AE-Lock.

Cool, that's how I use my Nikon too, almost always with single focus point... the real issue I have with ltevo is focus for macro shots hunts in and out of focus, and rarely lands in focus despite having moved past good focus. Some have said zooming while focusing helps, but it hasn't worked for me...
I usually have to increase my distance from the subject to get decent focus like in this shot...

Try camera app FV-5 in market. Doesn't do manual focus, but has some other macro/focusing options to play with, as well as other neat features.
Thank you so much for telling about the tapping feature that will help me out so much!

Lumia 920 camera focus problem

When I turn on the macro mode (close up), if the camera can't detect "close objects" , it won't focus.

Macro mode off
Does you Lumia 920 act like this?
It won't happen on Lumia 900, if you turn on the macro mode on Lumia 900, it can still focus.
Thank you very much
I haven't got my Lumia 920 yet, but I will check in about 2 weeks once the backorder is cleared. :crying:
Is that your lunch?
if you chose macro mode, and nothing is in the macro range, why would it focus beyond that?
Best is to leave it in Auto mode.

Yep, I see that too - max focal distance for Close Up is about 2' - limit of the lens perhaps?

Because in Lumia 900, it takes better photo if the macro mode is on
A macro lens for an SLR won't take a landscape either, so what.
Use macro when you want to take a close up, otherwise switch it off. Whatever the 900 did was just a fluke or incorrect.
Why misuse something and then complain it does not work?

The title itself "Lumia 920 camera focus problem"
---------- Post added at 04:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:46 PM ----------
Just tested it out.
when in Close-up mode, it actually focuses on nearer objects than it can in Auto Mode.
Auto mode is not switching to Close-up mode Automatically.
For me, the "Auto Setting" have issues focusing at distance mainly outdoor ( i did the half press, it did not focus and tried touch to focus and don't work either. And i tried constantly on the same spots but won't work at all). especially taking photos from building to ground level where there its more to like shades that has lesser access to sunlight, natural light etc. fortunately, not all shots are blurred and out of focus like this if you shoot from ground to ground level.
it can be ok at times depending on how you focus it.
Maco

The simple answer to your OP as stated before is that you arnt close enough to use maco, this is a macro shot I took, and some others, I find taping the screen to be easier than using a button as I can select where to focus
Macro:
http://sdrv.ms/Zbiekq
http://sdrv.ms/Zbii3M
Try the following steps.
1. Change the focus mode to AUTO
2. Focus the phone close the the object and keep it steadily
3. Press the camera button slowely, first press it half and then full without releasing it. This should be done may be withing 2 seconds but slowly.
Pls let me know if it works

Yellow tint on camera

This issue is driving me insane. It appeared with Amber / GDR2.
I thought it was only with the Pro Cam app, but it extends to every single other camera app (tried ProShot, OneShot, 6tag, everything) out there, including the default WP8 camera - it's more easily noticeable on Pro Cam though.
You take a picture (try taking a picture of any silver or grey object, doesn't matter the lighting, it's the best color to notice the tint) and it's perfect. Two seconds later, the post-processing kicks in and results in a very yellow tinted, blurry picture. I thought it was the viewer on Pro Cam, so I transfered it to my PC and it's not. It's really awful, because you see, as soon as you take the shot, a very sharp, very nice coloured picture just to see it being destroyed by horrible post processing two seconds after.
I've been searching similar cases on the internet and I found a great number of people with the same problem, specially on reddit and Windows Phone centered blogs. I don't think Nokia is doing anything about it soon and GDR3 will probably be as late as ever to correct it.
Any ideas how to bypass the auto post processing? I tried every single setting on Pro Cam and default camera and the result is the same.
Examples:
As soon as you take the picture it looks like this

A second later it's turned into this mess. It's not just the quickviewer. The file turns exactly like this.

The camera apps process the pics to a lower resolution to make them less processor-hungry and easier to view on the phone. And, the yellowish color happens to be one of the processed results.
But, if you upload your pics to your computer (or SkyDrive) you'll notice that the yellowish color is gone, the pics are beautiful and in high-resolution (Try to watch them on a HD screen and you'll see what I mean).
It is a known flaw and they're probably working on an update as we write this.

To be honest, the uploaded photos still not really good.
I think Nokia need pay more effort to the camera in 920, even my Dad's 520, the white balance and sharpness is much better than my 920

Four power tips to get you shutter-happy with your phone

Taking picture-perfect photos with a smartphone is an acquired art, as many of us have learned the hard way. Below are some examples of what can happen when things go wrong!

You couldn't reach the shutter when taking that oh-so-flattering selfie.
Your photographer forgets to wait until the count of three.
If you're also guilty of these "camera crimes", it's probably time that you read this guide, and familiarized yourself with some of the power features available in the Camera app on the latest Huawei P10/P10 Plus. Once you've got to grips with these features, we guarantee that every photo you take can be a masterpiece.
Shutter shortcuts
• The volume buttons
When you're trying to take a selfie with your phone held at arm's length, pressing the shutter button can be tricky. Thankfully, in EMUI 5.1, you can enable the volume buttons to trigger the shutter, allowing you to focus on honing your composition.
• Touch to capture
The Touch to capture feature lets you trigger the shutter by touching anywhere inside the viewfinder window. The camera focuses on the area you select and takes a photo. This is especially useful for taking selfies, when you need to hold your phone further away to fit in the shot.
Tips:
• Try to touch the object or area that you want to focus on to ensure it is in focus.
• The Touch to capture feature is not available when Wide Aperture or Pro mode are enabled.
Going hands-free
• Timer
If you want to take a group shot, but you're short of a photographer, you can set a camera timer to give everyone time to get in-shot. All you have to do is position your phone, set the timer interval, strike a pose, and your phone will do the rest.
Once configured, touch the shutter button to start the countdown. Your phone will take a photo automatically when the timer reaches zero.
• Audio control
If you need to go completely hands-free, try using your phone's audio control feature to capture photos. This feature is great for taking selfies and group shots. All you have to do is enable this feature, shout "Cheese", and the shutter is triggered automatically.
To finish off, we tested out the timer feature to show you just what you can achieve.
To take a photo like the one above, simply find something to prop up your phone (a bag or bottle), set the timer, and then get in position. Whoever said you can't take good photos when you're on your own?
