Display Carrier Name in Status Bar - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Is there a way to display the carrier name beside the signal bars, my Note offten times goes in to emergency calls only but still displays signal and I will not be able to tell until I locked it and take a look at the lock screen to see if I am on a network or not.... (for anyone wondering why I want it displayed)
So question.. is there a way to display the carrier name in the status bar on the home screen?

If it is often going to emergency calls I'd suggest you get it replaced. If you're on att we still have a few days left just bring it back where you got it tell them what's up and they will swap it out. Just for ****s get a new sim card I'm on my third card for this phone cause of little issues we thought might be solved with a similar swap. Should be free, was for me
I know this isn't what you are asking for but what you are seeing should not happen and most likely is a phone defect.

The thing is. .. Its related to LTE and i live in a fringe area if i set the phone to hspa it stops doing it so i was wondering if it was possible so i could see how offten i actually lose my LTE connection.

It might is possible if rooted or on custom Rom. But as far as i know it is not an option in the stock settings so can't be done unrooted.

My bedroom is a fringe area depending on where I move the phone it gets hspa (wow my note auto corrected that to hepatitis haha) and I don't see the emergency call issue you are seeing, but do get the network time problem but only in my room. That's just really strange behavior.
I'm just saying if it could be a phone issue replace it now while you can still get a new in box replacement.
Maybe there is an app to count the handoffs or something. Is the difference in 4g icon not satisfactory?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium

Plus are you not seeing the circled icons? I'm just rooted with the OC kernel and see this.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium

Yeah my lock screen shows me the carrier name not in the status bar like yours but rather right below where yours is. .. The funny thing is i work for the carrier and i know my area is very poor for LTE and handoff is not occuring properly which is more related to our simcard and a PLMN issue.
This wont be fixed for a.while so i juat have to get creative. ... I dont mind rooting it i just want to make sure i can do it before i root it

Possible to get Vibrant to display H instead of 3G?

I was wondering if there was something I could download, or something from the market that i could download that would make my phone say H instead of 3G? My vibrant is not rooted.
I'm wondering why... but there won't be an app to do that. The G E and 3G icons are held in drawables. So unless you make your own update.zip with replaces drawables, I don't that's going to happen.

Why do you want it to display that? The H is generally displayed when you're using HSPA/HSPA+. If you're connected t 3G it will say 3G. If you're connected to Edge, you'll get an E and if you're on the barebones cell network all you get is the number of bars you have.

I think he wants his phone to be like nexus one is, or other android phones are running custom roms, specifically cyanogen mod. With cm, it will jump from 3g to h icon quite often when data is used, does it to me in my area. I get hspa speeds here, but 3g is the only icon displayed. I like it this way more, the constant jump from 3g to hspa in notifications pane is annoying. Maybe he just wants people to see that his phone is on hspa and not 3g, because the icon doesn't change to that on stock rom.

Not true. I have a stock rom on my Vibrant and it does toggle between 3g and hybrid. It just depends on whether or not you have the new radios broadcasting in your area. Some markets have a lot of hybrid running, while many others have little to none. One of my best friends is an RF tech for T-Mo.

No ****, Einstein! It stands for HSDPA, but ask any switch tech and he will tell you its hybrid. Right now in many markets, it is a true hybrid mix of HSDPA and 3g and not explicitly one or the other. Do some research before you criticize someone, retard!

I downloaded the user manual to the vibrant (not the one that comes in the box) and it definitely says that there is a 'H' icon. I wonder why they don't have it displayed when actually connected to a HSDPA+ connection?
This is the text next to the 'H' Icons:
Displays when the 3G+ network connection is active.
Displays when your phone is communicating with the
3G+ network.
What does it mean when there's just a G?
3G means 3G

Roaming Issue

I am on 3 Ireland and i visit the UK quite often and the phone automatically defaults to 3 UK, but ive noticed when i return to Ireland only in certain places for example in work the R (for roaming) letter shows beside the signal bar in the statusbar and it wont connect to the Internet, when i go to settings > Mobile networks >Network Operators > select automatically it doesn't always reset it to what it should be whereas sometimes it does, this only appears to happen in certain places too and it's a bit annoying to be honest, pointless talking to 3 Customer service too they keep saying "you must be in a bad signal area" right since when was Dublin City Centre a bad signal area then.
Does anyone know why the phone is doing this, as i said it only appears to happen in a certain area, my SGSII never gave me this problem at all.
Bump..
anyone have any idea as to why phone behaves like this?
Mine shows the R when I don't have very strong 3 signal so it hands off to whichever network 3 have their network sharing agreement with.
Do you have the data while roaming box checked in mobile network settings?

No always have that unchecked as im not roaming and only use WiFi or my UK SIM card when im outside Ireland.
It's bizzare because it only happens in a certain place in the Dublin 3 area,i haven't seen it happen anywhere else, it's a bit annoying actually as i cant access the Internet then off of a sudden the R goes away and im back to normal.

Well check that box because even though you are in Ireland it is still considered roaming because you aren't using 3's network when the R is there.
I'm given two choices on my galaxy nexus, national roaming and international roaming, but on my S3 its all lumped into one checkbox.
You'll need to have it checked to get Internet connectivity when the R comes up.

Vodafones network is bigger so they don't need to share.
3 share network towers with someone (02 I think) to help boost their national coverage percentage.
You can't get 3g data while the R is there, only 2g.
But Vodafone don't have unlimited data and where I live 3 hspa+ is faster so there's the trade off.

Roaming not working at all
I got to both UK and Germany and I got a strange behavior: I was connected to a network with full bars but notification bar was showing "emergency call only". No way to both call, text or receive.
It worked intermittently for the 10% of time only.
No luck switching to 2G only, selecting an operator manually or rebooting the device.
I'm on AFL6 fw, but it did not work on previous two releases as well.
My home carrier is 3 Italy.
When I got back home I had exactly the same issue when moving out from flight mode, a reboot solved it tough.

How's everyone's reception? Mine sucks

Just curious how reception is for others. As you can see in the pic, I'm in a good area, but it drops constantly. It will show, 6 bars, then drop to none, then 2, then none, then 6 and so on. Even sitting next to my airwaves it does this. A friend of mine has the same issues on his s3. Either we have 2 defective phones or sprint sucks. This phone is great but not sure what's up with my reception. It goes into roaming in town near my sprint store.
I'm on sprint running a un-rooted stock rom.
Note this is at the same location for this pic and notice how it goes from green to brown to none. Fluctuates way to much for me being at work in the same spot

Does call quality or data speed drop too? I read somewhere that the S3 bar indicator scales differently and can not be compared side by side with a different model phone.
Yes really hope you do not have a defective phone and maybe this is a T-Mobile issue.. I live in a very rural area and my Verizon tower is 20 miles away, let's hope this is not the tip of the iceberg on reception for the G3.

Is it dropping calls, or data, or are you just overreacting to a few miscolored bars? I mean, certain spots are going to go into roaming; Sprint isn't everywhere. Does another phone go into roaming at the same spot?
Mine seems to lose signal pretty often. It'll go from full strength or a few bars to the no signal circle with a line through it. Haven't been able to pinpoint why yet.
I will say this signal is not as strong as my iPhone 4s (ATT). I was downtown last night in a Bar. I normally text while I am in there, I could not text last night on my SIII, I get no signal inside. On my iPhone i always could text. Sucks when I'm trying to have girls meet me...
That looks like every Sprint phone I've ever had, to be honest. Mine always do that and I have no idea why. lol
It will roam at the sprint store. Sprint reps can't explain it and I get the "we have never seen this issue before" speech. But I'm going to swap it out. The screen is yellow anyways.
I also roam at home with an airwave. Never had that issue with my evo 3d or photon.
The antenna on this phone can't be that bad can they? I know Sammy has a reputation for horrible reception.
And it does drop calls and texts will have to be resent

to look at your reception status, simply go to "battery" and then hit the "cell standby" bar in the list of battery usage

Mine is about 3-4 dbm lower than my Thunderbolt I have for work, but it displays 1 or 2 less "bars".
Sprint no-charge roaming
This won't fix your connectivity issues, but
In conversation with a Corporate Sprint Rep today, billing dept, I was informed that Sprint doesn't charge for roaming
in the domestic US. I didn't know this.
If phone goes into roaming, perhaps this lightens the impact?
I think this may have something to do with the antenna being on the bottom of the phone where your palm rests. Atleast thats how it is on my Tmo. If I hold the phone just on the top half or not holding it at all then I get more bars and more consistent. Soon as I hold it in particular with my left hand is when I lose signal bars. This only happens in an area where I'm only getting 2 bars.
I also had a sprint s3 (not active now) but never really checked the signal bar since I never lost connection.

How to increase consistency/strength of the phone signal

My phone - I have ICS - S-OFF Amaze with Energy ROM and I had tried to apply blas0id tweaks.
The problem - In certain areas I don't have phone signal for a few minutes, then suddenly it will show 4 bars for a few minutes. In general the signal seems fickle.
Before ICS upgrade, when I had GB, I always had 4 bars in the same places. I *think* I had good signal with ICS before I did blat0id tweaks, but I am not certain of that. (ICS and the tweaks were within a few days)
My wife's Iphone still has excellent signal in those places. Tmobile Mytouch also has excellent signal in the same places. So something has changed on my amaze and not the cell towers.
What I have done so far -
1. went back to stock ICS by flashing the img file. That did not improve the signal. So then got back to energy
2. Tried another ROM - speedrom. No improvement in signal
3. Tried few apps like fresh network. They did not help
Please help me
What can/should I do? I love my amaze, but if I dont get consistent signal, I will have to replace it
Are there any tweaks that I can try?
How about the custom kernels that have been made for ICS recently, would those help?
Is there a way to increase the power to look for and catch on better signal? I can trade battery life for better signal
Thanks
I have same issue but with WiFi only. I never had GB I hope there is a work around

Found a workaround
This was dumb luck, but when I was trying to play around the app opensignal, it wanted me to set 2G for some of its functionality, since that functionality does not work over 3g. So I went to setup and set Network mode to "GSM Only" from "GSM/WCDMA Auto"
And walla! right after that my signal jumped from 1 bar to 4 bars and has stayed there. I went back to WCDMA and signal dropped, so now I change the network mode only when I need 4G. Its a pain, but at least, the signal is good when I need it.
So with that information, can someone help how I can tweak something to get my 4G and also good signal?
Thanks

yup, that's what this setting is supposed to do, but it increased the quality of my phone signal, that is what I am trying to make better/consistent. A new sim card is a good idea.. so is removing the back cover and cleaning off the contacts with a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol. Taking something and SLIGHTLY bending out each of the gold contacts so they make better contact with the case, making sure there is no debris.
Another thing to look into- there is a TON of hacks for cellphone signal that can be done in build.prop.. playing with those settings is probably a good idea.
The last idea- the signal is actually NOT different. The number of bars it shows you is now just more ACCURATE. You still lose signal in ONLY the exact places you would have before.. but now when your phone would show you as having 1 or 2 bars(on gingerbread) right before you lose all signal, on ICS it shows you as having NO bars because you truly have almost lost the signal. It is VERY accurate, now that I am in an area with bad signal.. I have actually flashed gingerbread again and things did NOT get better, there was just fewer bars that weren't as accurate. But I lost signal in the same spots, and would lost 4g in the same exact spots..

Guys, OP here. This question/workaround is not about getting 4G. I am getting 4G just fine. Its about the phone signal (the bars). My amaze does not get good phone signal in some areas and when I set the network mode to GSM only (2G), phone signal strength and stability increases. and now I want to figure out how I can keep the setting to 4G and get a good phone signal

Hi SBD, thanks for coming in. I will look into build.prop (ro.ril properties I think) I will also clean any dust inside the phone, may be that will help. The sim card was new when I got my amaze .. but no harm in trying. So I will ask for a new sim card too.
However, in my case, I have a different experience. This is what I did in a weak signal spot.
Have 4G on. I get 0 signal. Can't make a call
go to 2G at the same spot, I get 2-3 bars. I can make a call
I used opensignal app to check signal strength in both cases. with 4G it showed 0. With 2G it showed 42%
Another test. On my route to drop kids off for their day camp, I was on a call (with 4G on) and dropped the call twice (bad reception areas) while going. I switched it to 2G and while coming back did not drop the call.
Before I found this workaround .. people called me and complained that it directly went to voicemail and I never got the call. (no signal). Since I found the workaround, I haven't heard that from anyone.
So I am convinced that there are some real issues in catching the signal with 4G on that get resolved in "2G only" mode. (may be it has to do with the kind of cell towers we have in our area and nothing to do with the phone)
will update if I find more

Before I found this workaround .. people called me and complained that it directly went to voicemail and I never got the call. (no signal). Since I found the workaround, I haven't heard that from anyone.
So I am convinced that there are some real issues in catching the signal with 4G on that get resolved in "2G only" mode. (may be it has to do with the kind of cell towers we have in our area and nothing to do with the phone)
will update if I find more

Yea, it should be lines that have ro.ril that youd eant to change.. and fortunately one of those that you can add(it isn't included by default) will do exactly what you need, default to 2g signal when 4g is too weak. I actually need the same thing, in Jacksonville we have great signal.. except in this new place I moved into. It drains my battery by trying to stay with 4g.. but I don't have time before work to find it.
Look for a tthread by "master&slave" titled something like "super build.prop tweaks" in the vibrant forums, I THINK they had that line.. otherwise google around for something like "build.prop signal tweak" as if it isisn't in that thread, there's a really good one on some other forum.
Also, I remember there being some app that requires root that allows you to toggle between GSM preferred and 2g only.. it changes it at system level, and I don't think it was on the play store, I think it was on Xda.
But yea, I understand your dilemma, and until we get an alternative radio to flash(which I don't forsee), that is the kind of workarounds you need. If you find a reasonable solution make sure to post as it will help me too!

I will try to figure out what these different ril properties control and which one to modify .. will report after my experimentation. I haven't found a good comprehensive explanation of all those properties yet.
Glad I'm not the only one...

I have had this problem ever since I got my phone in October (right after launch). Updating to ICS didn't help. i've been planning to root and try another ROM, but so far have been skittish as this is my only phone. hasoon, you say it's the SIM card? I am trying the switch to GSM only to see if it makes a difference. My problem is at home - I have terrible service and I live on a mountain with cell phone towers everywhere. My daughter's AT&T and my old AT&T Nokia E71x had excellent service there. I'll let you know if this helps. Maybe a trip to my local t-Mobile store is in order.
It's not the sim card. I noticed on google a lot of people have this problem with htc phones. It's just a bad radio.

No network until I restart the damn phone

Hi
I have a query, I live in a part of the city where my signal reception is pretty poor. So I get a lot of dropped calls and some times msgs don't get delivered to me and calls from other people don't reach me and neither can I call. However the bars in the network zone are always showing a strength of 3 or 4 bars. Initially turning the device into airplane mode and then turning it off used to work at times, but now it doesn't so I don't know if that was a placebo. However now most of the times the issue is resolved by restarting the device. It works 90% of the times I'd say. Sometimes I don't even realise it but I get a bunch of messages when I wake up so I know my phone ws not reachable.
I'm planning to change my network soon, but I was wondering what does restarting the phone actually do and can that be mimicked by doing something else which is a little less time consuming. Also is there a way to know if I'm not reachable to the other person, the bars in the signal strength icon don't seem to be accurate at all.
Anybody?

Are you already on a rom or just stock?
Not sure if this would be any help but maybe a network booster app of some sort would help.
as what the dude above me said, network booster app might help you out on that.
rebooting would force your phone to look for signal the intense way (that's how i see it xD hahaha)
perhaps changing to another network would be your best bet

Thanks for the replies. I'm on stock ics as of now. I was told those network booster apps are just Crappy but it's well worth a shot. Any recommendations?

At settings choose automatic network selection. More settings > mobile networks
