I'd sure like to record my calls...without recording from the mic. I miss that function on my Windows Mobile phones...
What? That scares the poop right out of me. How'd you find out it was recording your calls? What started it? What Rom are you using?
If this isn't an explicit feature of the Rom (even if it was...if its not clear how to turn it off...) i would be running out the door with a pitchfork.

It's a feature in Saurom. As far as I know, it doesn't record until you actually press the button.

Based on what I've heard, you don't even need a custom ROM to do this - you can just open voice recorder while in a call, and hit record.
It will record both sides of the conversation.
You need to check the legality of this in whatever state you happen to be in, especially if you plan to use it as some sort of official evidence of anything. Some states are single party (meaning on one of the parties on the line needs to be aware that the call is recorded) while others require all parties to be aware.
Very serious offense if you get caught on the wrong side of these laws, as they are considered wire tapping.

That's the first thing I tried. No go. Anything I've downloaded from Google Play just used the microphone to record during a speakerphone call, or crashed.

Yes ive searched, and ive done research, but I use it for voicemail right now. Would getting a number benefit me at all? Btw i dont pay for my plan so that doesnt even matter

But how is it different?
Here's the idea. Add your Google Voice number to your Friend/Family list. Then use the Google Voice callback app (or use the Google Voice mobile website to set up a call). This will create a phone call that will start with your phone ringing. When you answer the phone, it will then begin ringing your other party. The genius here is that the incoming number on the caller ID is your Google Voice number. No minutes used.
Another bonus is that if you change phone companies, you don't have to change your Google Voice number. Assuming that is the number you are handing out to people, you'll always get calls. Add on to the list superior voicemail, and much better texting and it starts to really shine.
If I am diligent, I can go an entire month using minimal minutes. Since I am sharing minutes, this makes the other users on our plan very happy. =)

It is also helpful for people who would like to split their work life from their non-work life. You can specify conditions to connect a call to a work phone or home phone between specific hours, or you can use one phone with multiple voicemail greetings for different groups of people (family, friends, work, etc.). It lets you screen/block calls from specific or unknown people and send them directly to voicemail. You just have a lot more control over things.
Good point! I had forgotten about those customizations! It is especially amusing to set up a custom voicemail greeting for one specific person. When John calls and it says, "Hey John, leave a message old man!"

Can someone please explain, once and for all, why recording incoming audio for calls is so damn difficult? Forget about the legality of it or whatever - my question is purely technical. What are the technical difficulties that a developer runs into when trying to write a call recording app? Particularly for the Atrix?
I've heard that "moto blocks it", but that's not really an answer. Is the driver "hidden" in some way? Is the stream encrypted or something? Is there no API function that exposes the incoming audio stream?
On phones that do successfully record the inbound audio, how is the app doing it, and why does it work on that phone, but not on another? What's different about the platform/software/driver/electronics/etc?

Totally bro it like totally records your words and stuff and like saves em on an invisible SD card and the file is 0kb... oh and then if you check your memory to see if it is recording it sends it via the internet... even without a connection!

probably is the legality issue. worried about something being recorded during a conversation that can't legally be recorded.
Can't really imagine any technical difficulty that would prevent it.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone, but I'm afraid this post is turning into the legal conversation that I hoped it wouldn't. I'm sure none of us are lawyers, so let's stick to the nerdy technical stuff we're good at.
So just to try to reign the conversation back in; there's gotta be some devs out there who have dabbled in this area before. What are the technical nuances and obstacles in wirting code to record the incoming audio of a phone call?

the Atrix, cannot record calls is because Moto left out a standard Android function from one of the libraries, the libaudio.so file. Supposedly that is the standard way to stream the live call audio (both incoming & outgoing) for Android programming.
Since other Android phones CAN record calls, and since other Android apps do work with multiple other phones--it seems likely that this is a Moto issue and not an "Android" problem. Moto have no comment on the topic other than "we don't make call recording software".
Someone capable of shimming in some new code or writing a driver that can access the hardware will be my hero. in another post I saw someone that was able to bring a driver from another phone and use its functionality to record calls
I would pay good money to record MY phone calls.....
I came across this idea from another board about a "virtual recorder"

Is this something that can be corrected with a custom ROM and kernel? I admit to not knowing much about programming for Android and how a lot of that works. I've got some programming experience outside of Android and Linux, and I'd be willing to cross over and work on custom ROMs just for that feature. Like you, I think it's worth it's weight in gold...
Just to confirm call recording works amazing as standard. I use callrecorder by skvalex and device is other, use standard android api and choose voice up link and downlink. Im getting really amazing call recording. No mods needed other than root of course. Im on an international version. Hope this helps someone.

you can try "all call recorder" from play store, it's free and work fine !

There is no replacing this app. It can do ANYTHING you would ever need in a call recorder. To name some features:
I have my family in a "family group" in my contacts. Same with friends in "friends". You can go to exceptions and tell it to "never record x-group" and "always record" another group. It also has a manual over ride button so that you can start recording even if the person calling is in the "never record" group. So my recorder is setup so it automatically records everyone that is not in my "never record" group.
I love that app. Worth every penny IMHO.

Yupp. It has saved me about $1.000 to date. What happens most of the time is we agree upon a price and they tell me another price when the work is done or when the product shows up. I tell them "no we agreed on $xxxx dollars.", they disagree, I show them the recorded call and they back down. Without this app it would be "I said, you said" and it would be a PITA to settle on something. It's such a nice app! Dollars, frustration and time saved! I would donate even more, but considering I gave the dev a tons of idea: exception list, movable recording button, "hide pause button if recording has started option" etc, that he incorporated to make the app it is today I feel I have done my part

"all call recorder" freezes my Note 2. It gave black screen after call and had to pull battery out, so I uninstalled it.

Can you point me in the right direction on how to get their software? I am willing to pay för a solution that lets me record calls regardless if I am on blutooth, cabled headset, normal or speakerohone, preferably channel divided. Sound format doesn't matter as long as there somewhere is a converter for it.
My phone is rooted, native API seams to work on handset with or without speakerphone active, however not with headset. My phone is rooted.
I tried every single setting from the "Standard Android API preferences, but it did not work with bluetooth headset (Sony Smart Wireless). Only the incoming voice is being recorded.
Though I only use the note with bluetooth the app is useless for me.

I've used record my call app which is free.
just set the recording mode to Phone instead of microphone.
I can even choose what numbers to record such as unknown numbers and groups. it's been great.

That's what I use now, but no matter what the setting, it either records only my voice or the other person. Not both. I've tried this two different bluetooth headsets without luck: Motorola hx550 and jawbone icon.

So this weekend i was driving around with my Note in its window mount and started thinking. What i really need is a way to trigger either Google Now or some other third-party app with voice-only controls. that way i could say Text Mom: Hi mom: and the phone would do so. Same with music, directions, calling etc.
As it stands, i have to manually activate these functions with physical contact. Is there any app out there that would listen for a key phrase to start an action?

Besides Siri on the iphone, the only thing I can find thats close is "assistant" in the market. Skyvi is only for sms, but assistant lets you create voice shortcuts. But nothing is handsfree - you have to wake up the phone and touch the app icon.

Hi All,
So this idea is from a Sanyo flip phone I had way back in the day on Sprint. Granted, it's not the most useful thing in the world, but it would be nice for times when you want to know why someone is calling before you answer the phone.
There was an option where after 4 rings the phone would answer play a locally stored greeting, then record a message locally. Now, the helpful part to me was the fact that (unless I hit a button to mute it) it would play the outgoing and incoming messages where I could hear them. Being this was several years ago, it couldn't play it over Bluetooth, which with better technology on both the device and headset ends, that would be possible. (My Motorola Elite Flip, for example)
But I'd like to see it go a step further, and make this a full featured answering / auto response system.
Say you're driving, and someone calls you, you hear the message they're leaving via your hands-free (either in car or headset) and decide you need to take the call. Instead of pressing a button, just say "Answer it". Or say "Ignore it" and the answering system would mute, the phone audio would return to whatever you had on previously, be it music or sat nav.
Similarly, if someone sends you a text, you could have it read to you on TTS, then the app would ask "Would you like to reply?" You could say "No" and the app would send a canned message ("I'm driving. I'll get back to you soon." or something similar), or say "Yes" then dictate your message by speech recognition.
With this, an auto filter would also be handy. Numbers not in your phone book, or numbers you set as black list, are automatically sent to the screener, while other contacts are not.
I think greetings should also get some options as well, like the option to have different greetings for different callers, or different caller groups, and the option to either record your greeting, or write one to be played to callers by TTS.
I've seen apps that do bits and pieces of this idea, but nothing that consolidates them, and the apps I've tried don't work very well, and they don't have the right feel. This app should be something that would feel like it was included stock on Android. Clean, simple, and intuitive.

Some of the places I go for service calls are out of range of a data network, and if there is one, it's only EDGE, which isn't really going to work for GV. I used GV for a short while and wasn't very impressed with it.

Nokia's are good devices, but Samsung is better. Wish I could get my hands on one app that can do what I'm looking for.
I'm looking for an app which will let me:
Say someone phones me. It rings a couple times then they have to say their name. I will then hear their message of their name and can choose to ignore it or answer it accordingly.
Is this what this app is?

I was recently looking for an app that did this but i cant find a decent one. I had this feature on my first color flip phone back in the day and i wondered why it wasnt available today. Its really useful. Im not a developer or id be heping you out with this project please let me know if you ever make it happen. Good luck.
I think with android limitations ...u cant play the greeting to the Caller. So i guess the app would be for rooted Phones only.
..Even with a rooted phones.. An app wont do the purpose. becoz u need to to do some framework changes.
I think u are going to need a MOD which can be flashed from recovery.
