[ADVICE] DEV-section - Optimus One, P500, V General

We all know that it has been a mess here since a while.
I thought to post this, so MAYBE some people do listen to CYANOGEN himself instead of the DEVs around here.

I really dislike the "chef" moniker when it comes to Android, since we are more of an open-source community. I think it implies a "file pusher" mentality. But then again, I am biased against proprietary versions of Android like Sense, so feel free to disregard all of this.
Here's my advice for those looking to make their own Android ROMs.. Stop. Write an app or two first, learn how the system works from a developer standpoint. Learn some Java. Read the developer documentation. Learn how to use Git. Then learn how to build AOSP from source. Read the porting guides, and learn how the build system works (the links below have almost everything you could possibly want to know). Now try to put your new found skills to work on enhancing the platform by writing code or making theme overlays. And share! And put that **** on your resume. There is a *ton* of information out there but any kind of "step-by-step rom cooking guide" is going to be a complete fail- it's too broad of a subject.
Android Developer Guides: http://d.android.com
Working with AOSP source: http://source.android.com
Platform Developer Guide: http://pdk.android.com
Android Gitweb: http://android.git.kernel.org
Git Ready (Git tips and tricks): http://www.gitready.com/
Building CyanogenMod: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Building_from_source
How Dexopt works and what are those odex files: http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=pl...bcd225e47b2cc7abb2a366112d3aeb45936;hb=master
The PDK site is absolutely vital if you are going to work on custom ROMs. Read every single page. Twice. Some of the info isn't up to date, but you'll get a really good idea about what goes into actually configuring Android to work on a real device.

And I don't say you should not "Develop" the "ROMs", I say we should publish them in ONE topic. Were everyone can acces them easily, but it will be ordened nicely.

If that thread will be anywere, than I will take responsibilty to make it.

I totally agree with this. O1 P500 Community could use a little cleaning up.
By the way, I have been wanting to learn actually developing Android but just can't find the resource to hook me up. Those links are just what I needed.

My opinion is that we can ask a kid politely till we die of old age,
and i'm not far by comparing what is happening here whit kids behavior.
Long story short moderators must do something, us users can relay do nothing,
if a user is like that, our posts will defensively not impress him and in most cases he will never read them..

Good for you that you find it now, if you tried searching the same earlier you would have learn how to develop in Android coz that link is almost 2 years old. Basically you wasted 2 years waiting for such links to come.
This thread is of no purpose, the theme roms and other roms will go in this section ONLY as its right now. No need to create threads like this one, to avoid warning.

Why do people keep asking what the status is on the Touch Pro 2? Check the threads!

I am putting this up in favor of the devs. I am not a dev myself, but I certainly respect what they are doing! What I can't stand are the people who keep asking dumb questions, like: when will this be fully working? Or: What is the status of android on touch pro 2? Look at the threads! If you took the time to look, you would know that there is still work to be done. Again, thank you devs!

Noobs will be noobs and there will never be a shortage of them lol, not much you can do about it. That's what I've learned with forums.
Noobs will be Noobs is right. I actually think the status updates have been very frequent and easy to navigate. (even for people like me that haven't been around much lately! :O )

Pretty sure a guide like that should be stickied with the rest of those threads at the top... that would be veryy helpful. I would be very confused too coming into the android threads for the first time.

Maybe at the "download your files here" section, say that the users don't necesarily need to know how those files work and what exactly they do, just that they are needed parts for android to work. Just trying to think if I was a beginner and what might confuse or overwhelm me. Just a suggestion but it probably wouldn't make a difference. Other than that I just wonder who needs to be told in order to get this thing stickied. This is kind of the equivelant of the thread in the WinMo section on flashing ROMs for noobs.

AOKP A port?

I thought all ported roms go in Ported Development? Dont get this wrong....or read too much into.. I love aokp. Just question as i see an original developer Fox Hound(Raffe) can do into Development but im confused as why AOKP...its a port. And PLEASE IM NOT STARTING ANY CRAP AND DONT WANT BULL. Just simple question. I run all roms and appreciate everyones work 110%.
I don't think it's ported. I think Task compiles all the AOKP source himself. It was ported in the beginning, then Task decided to do it right.

As long as you do a major overhaul from another base it is allowed in original dev section.
Anything that just swapped files from Entropy's hellraiser package goes to ported section since no development is being done.
For example my Turkbey port, that I still do for people that request it but I don't add anything else to it. (I use to in GB)

Dont need million reasons. Dont care in general. Just asked diff between roms (read what i said in very start of question)and used his as a reference. Not insult not put down not ask if he was usefull. Have not an issue other then how he jumped in on an already answered and finished q&a. It was a simple question...got a simple answer and moved on. Hell i was on android forum reading on what type of kernel and rom im building next. So.... Dont get it. Oh.... I use the rom he does myself....kinda a revert when im tired of others. So its good work! Seems like everyone in xda is looking to jump on anything that they do not understand. (thats why i stopped cooking). Oh and dude....you have zero reason to flame me. Been doing longer then prob all...and like rock and roll....it needed the blues for it to be created. Another words.... You all use some form of my work. Once again i leave xda.
Good day.

So what was the point to this thread? Do you think the mods aren't doing their job? Do you think the mods are giving Task special consideration? Just because Red5 and task have a bro-love thing going on doesn't mean he's getting special consideration. He still has to abide by the rules of XDA.

Oh boy...I just love it when people start saying
"I'm building a ROM", "I'm doing dev work", "I want to be a recognized developer"
Then I make suggestions and I get "That's too hard", "Do you have a download link" "Cn u teac me hw mak a custm kernel?"
Yet they are totally unwilling to actually invest some time into these things and LEARN it.
Guy's Rome wasn't built in a day, and your ROM isn't going to be either. Look around, read, SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH. Download other people's stuff not just to Kang it, rename/re-post it under your name, but to LEARN, to figure out how it works, so you can UNDERSTAND. This isn't like a store, where you walk in and go "I want one of those, and I'll take one of them, and please get me that, where can I find this, etc, etc." Make little modifications, tweaks on top of tweaks, and keep doing that until it's soemthing new, soemthing different, and THEN post it. But please don't limit yourself, to what is "Easy" or "Comfortable", it's not the way to get anywhere with real development work, much less in life. Put some time into it, and some effort. I really do wish you all luck, but you guys have to stop looking for the easy way to get some quick credit.
[/RANT]
@OP I know of zero performance modifications that you can do in XML, and if you are looking to use someone else's work and use that then start searching and make sure you ask before you use it.

Who are you referring it to? I cooked a rom and I think that I have made the rom. Of you don't have anything to help me then please don't comment. I don't understand smali but I know how to read tutorials and add more features in the rom by smali editing like swipe to remove, 14 toggle etc.

He was being helpful, he is bringing up a attitude that is rampant here on XDA, namely the "cooking" of ROMs. There are WAY too many people who just cook a ROM in a kitchen and claim to have "developed" it. No, you just re-packaged somebody's work, it's not the same thing. I'm not saying it's useless, but it causes way to many "developer" wanna-be's that just aren't interested in actually learning something. Up above we posted suggestions and you responded with

That creates the impression that you aren't wanting to try any other methods for creating ROMs. If you were trying to say that you don't know smali, then maybe you should have said something like,

This is very true, I'm new to porting and I'm starting with porting so I can learn the ins and outs of a rom so at a later time I can learn to develop, even in porting I've had to back smali and make some edits to get things working so sooner or later you will have to as well.. I'm currently reading a begginers guide on java for android.. Google is my best friend and I'm trying to learn as much as I can because I have an idea of my 'ideal' rom.. I can't wait for someone else to do it so I can port it and I know it will never be the way I want.. I'm doing it mainly for myself and I hope one day I can share with others

Best thing to do is get on the good side of a dev and ask them to teach you, I had great help from some of the best devs on XDA, but as above its not something you can just learn easily, I already had a pretty good knowledge of Java and XMLs etc before i got a smart phone lol, If you stick to it then you should get somewhere, Java is a pain in the ass though, editing .smalis is probably the hardest thing for a new dev

Looking to be a dev apprentice...

So yeah, like it says above. Is there a dev who wouldn't mind teaching me some things? I'm not exactly a noob. Have an IT degree and experience writing in C++. No expert, but I learn quickly.
Would love to improve the dev community for this phone and many others in the future. Know devs don't really come into the general section a lot, but if u do or could pass it along I would appreciate it.
Thanks

I'm no developer (just working on apps, not ROMs), but I would suggest you read this thread. As Cyanogen says, you should start by learning some Java and working on an app or two. I would suggest acquiring a book to help you get started.
I started off with this guide for getting started with apps. I would suggest reading through the links in Cyanogen's thread and continuing from there.

Thanks, went thru that thread. Cyanogen's post was really informative. Me and a friend taught ourselves java when we were 15. But that's been 15 years, millions of brain cells, and seems like 2 lives ago.
Have to relearn it again. Remember back then we read java for dummies, lol. Anyone remember those? Taught us html pretty well, but I used that more than java.
Will check my local library for what they have and youtube tonight for tutorials.

Thanks for all the kind words and info. I really doubt I will have a rom out anytime soon. Have a few ideas for apps I would like to work on, so if that is the best way to learn then ill probably try that route.
It is all created by man, so the logic comes easy to me at times. Well, if it makes sense anyways. Sometimes I smh in frustration, "why did they decide to do it like this when the opposite makes so much sense?".

Do yourself a favor, NEVER fall back on construction. Everything is backwards and nothing is done right anymore. Lol
If your wanting to get into apk development there is a video guide tutorial that's excellent. Very comprehensive guide and its easy to follow along. Can't think of the OP's user name atm, I'll post a link later when I get home.
EDIT: Sorry for the delay, this isn't the video guide but not too bad- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1244196

SuperICS Port v1 [ICS]

Hey guys I just made a port using a guide from Supermaster34 and I need yall to see if it works thank you.
http://www.mediafire.com/?0rtc2gz11j6v28h
Sorry for not posting enough info.
This rom is for the galaxy player 4.0. Thanks to htcclay for actually building the rom, and sorry i couldn't answer your pm i've been out for a while
And the only reason i wasnt able to test it out is because i currently do not have my player.(sent it to samsung.)
 Sorry if I offended anyone
For which devices?

Erm usually some info is nice like which device, screen shots and you forgot to credit the original devs of the ROM you ported. Also you should be the first person to test your ROM to make sure it works. Its your responsibility to make sure it boots and works correctly

that's what i was concerned about after Supermaster34 posted his guide, that many noobs would create a lot of assed together hardly working roms and fill this forum with them.. just what we need!

Really? We all make mistakes from time to time, and quite honestly, this community needs all the dev work it gets, even if it's "half-assed" like you claim. We all have to start somewhere, so please keep your demotivational comments to yourself. I agree, this does need some work, but it's better to correct and forget than to spam the thread with complaints about mistakes.

in this case you stop spamming with complaints about the complaints. fyi, i didn't complain about anything, in my opinion there's difference between someone being a noob and making mistakes because of it and someone being obviously careless. How can you post a rom without even mentioning what device that rom is for and ignoring guidelines from the guide you are following? I'm sorry if it came a bit harsh, didn't want to hurt anyones egos, was talking in general terms.

Its the guys first rom. Everyone makes mistake even the smartest of devs sometimes forget these stuff. You have to fail to succeed sometimes. Any rom for the galaxy players is accepted as long as they work. It does not matter if built by a noob or a recognized dev, it is welcomed.

What noteworthy developmental contributions have you made to the SGP forum? If you think you can do a better job developing something, then you do it. You're not always right. Yet, you try to defend yourself, but the harsh truth is you were being downright rude.
I'm sorry, but there's no sense in you discouraging newly established developers from trying new things, when you have not even contributed any sort of development to the community.
Remember that this is the dev forum guys. Please take the arguments elsewhere. If I finish all my work soon I'll test this ROM to see if it works although I need to find my player first XD.
It turns out that it is a rom for the Player 4.0 so I can't test it

This is true, sorry for cluttering up this thread, I just felt like I needed to intervene . As has been said, while soultaker did NOT follow directions, merely a simple correction is needed, not a full-blown reprimand, especially since this is his FIRST dev contribution to the community. Clocking in at under 12 posts, I would say that that's pretty darn impressive, even if his format leaves a bit to be desired.
Good luck!
Actually i cant test it out right now since i dont have my player with me.
How do i flash?
The same way you flash regular cm9
i just wanted to point out that it says it is for the 4.0 in the description although not in the title. lol before making comments people should read and sorry ik this is development just wanted to point it out... sorry...

No, sorry. You're wrong.
I think it is YOU who should do the reading around here. The OP was originally devoid of all technical information. After establishing that fact, and a few arguments on the side, Soultaker went and edited the OP.
You can see where it says he edited the OP on 9/21. The debacle regarding the OP took place before 9/21. So, I believe I'll paraphrase you. This is development, so act like it. Use your brains and look at the information posted first.
You're asserting yourself in an argument that has long been finished; so, before you tell everyone to do something, I suggest you do it first.
The OP has now been updated to include the relevant information so I guess we can stop arguing about it now. Also arguments do not belong in dev so use pm or something else and don't clutter up this thread. People make mistakes all the time and the best thing we can do is help them learn from their mistakes rather than criticising them at every opportunity

How do I flash this? Do I need Odin/Heimdall?
