LCD Mura - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Has anyone else experienced "LCD mura" with their Primes, and if so, has the issue gotten any worse since you noticed it? LCD mura looks similar to light bleed, but not in corners of the screen. Rather, it is a small blotch/"bright spot" appearing anywhere on the screen. I have one such problem area that showed up after owning the Prime for about a month. It hasn't gotten any worse, but it's annoying on white backgrounds. I'm wondering how common of a problem this is. A Google search shows that it's a somewhat regular occurrence on cheaper LCD screens.

Ohhh, so *that's* what that is. I've had if for a while in one spot. Only noticeable on white backgrounds.

Yes had two such areas on my TF201. Had the sreen replaced under warranty.

What was the turnaround on the replacement? I have about 5-6 of those "white spots" now...
Have the spots come back after it was fixed?

My prime had 7 bright pixels!
They developed 2 months after I bought them..and kept increasing with time. These pixels will not go away with pixel fixer apps either.
Have sent my tablet for an RMA to get the LCD replaced. Fingers-crossed.

Sure, will keep the thread updated when i get it back. Only 5 days (3 business days) so far. RMA On "Waiting-[WB5] Wait for Repair\Test\Aging" status.

had 2 on mine, they didn't get bigger or anything. thought i could live with it and decided that since every time I saw it I was pissed so sent it in for RMA. Sent in March 26th (they received it) and was returned April 8th back in my hands. SOOOOO Happy I did I now feel like this is the tablet I should have always had. Also my time may have been extended by also getting bt/wifi fixed (well partially fixed, usable now)

I guess I had this on my TF101, A few white spots showed up, I sent it in for RMA, it came back and looked fine (they said they replaced the screen) but after a few months the white spots came back almost in the same exact spot. I sent it in for RMA a second time, this time they flagged it as CID (customer induced damage) I emailed Hai, and *****ed and complained saying they fixed it the first time and didnt flag it as CID, so why are they flagging it this time. The next day I got an email from Hai saying it was taken care of and was no longer considered CID, and was being repaired.. So it does seem the white spots return in some cases

I had one of these on my screen. LCD replaced in a day. But then there were other issues like them not connecting the screen properly so only half the touch would register. Ended up getting a refund.

Just noticed my second LCD panel has a developed light 5mm mura spot.
Not as bad as last time.
Same area as last time. Lower left corner.
Would be interested to hear where other's have found their mura spots.

I have a couple on my prime, towards the bottom of the screen in landscape - one is about 3mm by 2 mm the other about half that size - they do grate on your nerves once you can see them, especially as so much of what I do on my prime (kindle, email, word-processing, surfing the web) is against a white background. I've emailed ASUS and am looking into a RMA.

I had the same problem, right in the center of the screen, one bigger spot and two smaller.
Sent my Prime to RMA a month ago, still waiting for it. Seems that he replacement screen is not so easy to find, in Europe.
BTW, they not considered it CID, and they will repair it under warranty.

Update on my prime's RMA
My tablet is still in WB5 state for an RMA to fix 7 such bright spots. In multiple conversations with CSRs it was explained that other issues (unspecified) were detected after the repair, and the tablet is now waiting for some special components to be repaired.
I am still within 10-14 business days to repair period, so the RMA can not be esclated yet.
I regret having sent my tablet for LCD replacement. Will kepp posting any updates that I have.
I recall someone mentioning the below statement in some other forum...
"I hate apple. But atleast their Sh**t works and they support it"
How true!
FYI - I sent it to TEXAS repair center.

WTF! Just noticed a mura starting to form.....ughh every time I am happy with my prime I find something that P***es me off with it. I really want to love this tablet. I feel like I am prime-bipolar. Some days I am prime-manic and some days I am prime-depressed. /Sigh Asus why do you toy with my electronic emotions?

I'm noticing a 3rd spot develop on mine - begun the RMA process. I'm going to brace my self to be without my prime for at least a month. (I survived without it for 40 years, I'm sure I can go a month...)

i had spots on my first prime (BCOK) but exchanged due to GPS (also had haptic feedback issue too).
Second prime (c10) has a couple spots in landscape about an inch from the bottom of the screen near the center. I have "kept an eye on it" as far as noticing it only when I'm really on a white background or anything. I usually use it for reading and/or taking notes on PDFs so I surprisingly haven't been bothered by it AT ALL. I actually forgot they were there until last week.
Anyways, if it gets any bigger or I get more spots, I'll send it in over the summer...

i have a tiny 2mm area which is really white, when i have a whitish background. It is imposibble to tell though when i have other colours on the screen. My tablets serial number starts with a B so it was one of the earlier ones. It just randomly happened one day but its not that big of an issue

i had 2, if in landscape they were just off center down and left, and a little further down and left like middle of lower left quadrant was the big 5-7mm one that really bothered me. Decided to eventually send it in they received unit march 26 was back in my hands april 13th ish (can't remember) i believe

I don't know if this is my problem or not -- When I have a black/dark screen, I can see two areas that are whiter than the rest of the screen. It's not individual pixels but splotches. I do not notice it on white or any other color background? I haven't decided if I can live with it yet or not - still hoping it will just go away! If this isn't LCD Mura, what would you call it?

Would you return the TP if you were me?

Oye. First post at XDA. I bought the TP at Canada Computers on December 23rd. They give two weeks for return, so I have until Friday to return or exchange this thing. If you were me, would you return this tablet? Here are my issues:
- gps will briefly lock outdoors, but loses the lock quickly after subtle movements
- hdmi output has issues with my Sony Bravia TV - only plays through left channel (using dice player and games like riptide)
- one white (dead) pixel near bottom right corner
- very slight white bleed on bottom right with black screen
What do you think? Maybe others are grappling with the same question.
Cheers,
lukin

Pixel did it for me. I am on the fence about the hdmi. I think that will happen with all of them until a fix is issued. But i would return it for the pixel.
If it is white it isn't dead though is it? I think it may be stuck. Have you tried massaging it or tapping it? I know it sounds weird but have you tried? Like with your finger or pencil eraser with a micro fiber cloth or some other material between so as not to scratch the screen. There are a few tricks if you Google it.
yeah I think the HDMI thing will just need firmware updates to fix, so hopefully will get sorted out. the pixel though is over the line, get a replacement.
Just preordered it...Hoping they come in this week. Been kicking the TF101/no TF201 around? and the Iconia A500. My wife pre ordered the prime while i was out so....I'm waiting in cyberline. Can't wait. Any other issues you guys finding?
If anything relate to screen, i would return or exchange right away, hard to ignore if you look at it every day....
Simple answer: Exchange it.
Why? If you're unhappy now, imagine how you'll feel once your small time window closes and you are still unhappy!!
Good god man, do it while y'ee have the chance!!
Yep, I'd return it for the pixel.
Single stuck pixel huh? I have one stuck red and thought that best buy would not take it back. If its a reasonable expectation that no pixels be dead or stuck then perhaps I will exchange it (if best buy lets me).
Thanks for the feedback. I am going try the screen massage, maybe break out the sexy time oils. If no luck, it goes back and I join the replacement line. It is is our first tablet and I wanted to get the best product. The bugs are testing my patience a bit. I bet it come with the territory when buying a brand new product.
Thanks.

So you say BB Woudn't take it back within their 14-days return policy?
I am not sure, I am going to send mine back to Amazon for a refund once more become in stock. Then I will re order it, hopefully with not stuck pixel. I am trying different pixel fixers/unsticking tools from the app market. Hopefully they will do the trick, as there is little wrong with it now. I did the battery drain thing to fix the messed up touch screen (never was bricked, just had poor sensitivity in random spots).

Same here. I had a monitor I kept with a dead pixel and I regretted not returning it for 3 years. Thing bugged me to death, but at the time I didn't want to go 3 weeks without a monitor to return it. I say at least try to exchange it as you should never have to put up with a dead pixel.
The HDMI and GPS probably will continue. The GPS issue is known and the HDMI is probably a handshaking issue with the DRM. A lot of devices can have these issues whether its your TV's problem or the Prime would not be known. DRM should never be included in cabling which is why I hate HDMI.

I have 2 stuck pixels that I only see on a black background when looking real hard for it. I have never seen them any other way, so I dont plan on sending it back to newegg. If I had bought it locally and could get another to try before I had to return it, then I might feel different. The fact they are still difficult to get, and how hard it is for me to see it, I will keep it.
Here's an update on my headache about whether or not to return my TP. This will also discuss the GPS issue, so others might be interested.
I spoke to customer service today about the issue discussed above. This is their response to each:
1) GPS. They told me to download the firmware update and that would fix the issue. After updating there had been some improvement, but not enough. Basically the blue arrow in google maps bounced around my current location around 30 meters from where I am. For example, up the street, one street over, down the street, and even 10 kms away on the other end of the city. It never stayed fixed on my actual address.
At that point the supervisor suggested that it be sent to ASUS for repairs. This is where we got into a over the top semantic conversation. First of all, they wouldn't acknowledge that there has been problems with GPS for others or that they had posted any public response to the issues. Weird. They wouldn't acknowledge the aluminum case issue.
I told them I have two days left to return to the store and I want a guarantee that it will come back to me with GPS fixed. They said that any product that goes to the service centre will come back fixed. However, they don't know that the fix will be "up to the customers standard" for GPS. I said, okay, what is a reasonable standard for GPS functionality? That it can lock onto a couple satellites and not bounce around the screen like a pinball. He agreed this would be what he wanted from a GPS, but would not say that for certain this would be the end result of the recalibration. Then he began to talk about "environmental factors" that could impact the signal. I said, we've got blue sky and sun today, will it work on a day like today? He wouldn't guarantee that either.
2) HDMI output issue. He said it would be reported to quality control and that it may be fixed with a future update. No guarantee either.
3) Stuck white pixel. This issue seems to have gone away (awesome), but he said it would be fixed if sent for repairs.
I called Canada Computers to ask for some kind of an extension to their 14 day return policy, to have time to see what the repair does for GPS. They shot that down pretty quick. If I keep it past 14 days, there can be no return. They said I could return it and wait for another one, but there is no current stock or promise of when the next shipment arrives.
Two more questions for the forum to chew on:
1) Has anyone reported a fully functional GPS on this device. That they can drive in their car and the satellite remains locked? I have only seen videos that show it doesn't work - like the bloke who kept on calling it rubbish. If there are working GPS out there, then I'm more likely to roll the dice with the repair.
2) Will the Sony TV issue get fixed? I have read people that say it's a software issue and correctable; whereas others talked about DRM and that a fix isn't possible. I didn't actually understand the DRM piece entirely.
3) What quad core android tablets do we expect over the next couple months that will challenge the TP for top dog status? Maybe I can return and wait.
Thanks for reading.

Screen Burn... (Image Retention)

I am on my second Prime and discovered that my second one had some nasty screen burn. Short story... My first Prime I received on 12/27. UPS damaged it by dropping it on a corner, which is Best Buy's fault for only wrapping my Prime in plastic. This Prime was perfect.... no dead pixels, no wireless issues, typical GPS issues, no major light bleed... it was just damaged on a corner thanks to UPS.
I got my new Prime on 1/3 after doing some *****ing to Best Buy execs. This one I noticed right away that there is a slight light bleed on the right hand side (landscape) and 2 dead pixels. 2 out of 1,024,000 pixels isn't bad IMO, plus they were on the edges.
Now, last night I was watching The Devil's Rejects and noticed something funky on the right hand side of the screen (landscape mode obviously). I found a test color that shows my nice problem a lot more clearly... I wish I had something to calibrate the color more precisely to make it show better... Needless to say, I'm PISSED after discovering this thing has screen burn after only a few hours use!!! WTF!? I almost never use it in portrait mode and the brightness is almost always all the way down (auto brightness) because I'm by a lamp.
Here's a picture that I took. My sincere apologies, as taking pictures of LCD's is quite difficult without them showing up all messed up.
CLICK IMAGE FOR A BIGGER VERSION...
I can't get it to show up on camera, but it is clearly the black bar that holds your back, home, etc. buttons, as well as the time. You can see these burned in to this area of the screen.
Has anyone else had this problem yet? Looks like to me I'll be in for Prime #3... Maybe I'll just wait to see what CES has to bring, since I'm not getting what I want out of the Prime.
wow, that's bad... I have not come across anything like that (yet...) and hope that i never do!
I use my Prime right side up (with logo at top) during the day, and then at night when i'm home i use it upside down (logo on bottom right). I haven't noticed any status bar screen burn in yet... But I have always wondered about if the honeycomb status bar could burn into the screen, I guess it really can (and it scares me).
I hope you have better luck with #3. I have never seen status bar burn in on a tablet before but have always thought it was possible because of the way honeycombs status bar is always in view.
I was scared of that as well, but I figured LCD technology has come a long ways and there is no way it will burn in quick. My 3 year old Samsung 46" ToC has had stuff sit on the screen for an hour or two at a time, and I have zero burn issues. Same thing goes w/ my monitors. They've had stuff sit on the screen for 10-15 hours and I've not had an issue. I just really wish the status bar would hide so I can use the full real estate of my tablet and also prevent this issue. I've heard that BB is getting some of these in this weekend, so I may try an in-person exchange. I hope that rumor is true...

The last time i had screen burn was on my first ever LCD HDTV (from polaroid lol). It was cheap and over time it has bad screen burn.
Something is def up with your primes screen... 3rd times a charm
yeah, your best bet is exchanging it. never heard of screen burn in on a tablet before. I think you the first to report this.
Damn, xda duplicating my previous post...
Anyways, If your unhappy with the way you received your prime from BB get a refund. Order from Office Depot, mine came in a white padded bag and ended up being in perfect condition with no defects at all.

The only other device that I have screen related issues with, is my Samsung Captivate. It has ghosting, which goes away with you changing whatever is on the display. I know for a fact this is a burn pm the Prime, since I watched another hour of the movie afterwards and did all kinds of other tasks today, and it doesn't disappear. Kind of disappointing.

What is likely going to keep me at BB, is the fact that I got a credit because I *****ed to execs about their crappy customer service.
I was using the pad heavily last night during the playoff games and my screen burned. I also noticed that a pixel died. It wasn't there when I first received the device. I'm not trippin because it is going back on Monday because of the "no serial number" issue.
This happened with my first one. I ran a pixel fixer over night and the status area was present the next day. I don't think this is screen burn though. It will go away after awhile if you use the tablet in landscape or whichever way you were not using it. I think it's called image persistence. It has to do with pixel charge or something.
Bring up an all gray background and you can really see it.
I'm waiting on a replacement due to stuck pixels and busted vibrator.
After several days of letting it not go in portrait mode, the bar has somewhat gone away. I did go ahead and used it for about an hour in portrait mode on both edges, and the opposite side had no problems with burn/ghosting. The original problem edge regained its problem right away. I would point this to not be a "burn" but rather a sort of long term ghosting. I'm highly disappointed with this one not only for the ghosting, but also several dead pixels. I'm up to 2 that won't turn black and 1 that won't turn colors. The one that won't turn colors is quite obnoxious.
I've been trying to contact Best Buy in regards to exchanging it... but I'm not having any luck with that crappy company. Ugh! All they tell me is I can return it and get my money back, exchange it in the store, or send it to ASUS. Option 1 is a no-go since I got a credit for my first troubles. Exchanging it won't happen since the stores don't have it, and their exchange policy is 14 days. The last one won't happen because I just bought this and I don't want a refurb a week into ownership.
This phenomenon is known as "image retention" and any early gen plasma tv owners will be familiar with it. why its cropping up here....i have no idea. my prime does this, for sure...its most noticeable when going from speedtest app to xda, which i have done a lot of..haha...anyway i have xda set to the black theme, and i see a very prominent white retention of the ad at the bottom of speedtest for several seconds after flipping back over to xda. I've seen it in a few other places, but it always goes away pretty quickly.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
Damn, didn't think I'd have to worry about burn in/image retention on a mobile device. Picking my Prime up today and now I'm gonna have that same paranoia I always get when I buy a new HDTV, but even my last two Plasmas never had any real problems (Panasonics). Hopefully this winds up not being a big issues though, sounds like I'll be getting insurance on my Prime after all and just doing arbitrary returns from time to time.
This was one of my first worries when the galaxy nexus was rumored to have on screen buttons rather than cap buttons. I thought amoled screens did get actul burn in. I didn't think it would really happen with these but it is a drawback of ips i guess.
I just wanted to tack this on, since I got a 3rd prime yesterday. This Prime I'm overall happy with, however the image retention still exists on this one. S/N is a BC batch, though I didn't grab the last one unfortunately. I will say this... this Prime's image retention happens when the screen brightness is at like 50% (no IPS+ mode). I flip to another app with a color, and I can see the retained image. Now what makes me quite a bit more happy about this one versus the other one... the image retention disappears after about 2 or 3 minutes. I definitely was not noticing it on a brief watch of the same movie that I noticed the image retention on the first one. My last one held onto the image for days at a time...
Overall 3rd time is a charm. Zero deal pixels, minor light bleed that you get with this style display, the feedback motor is quite a bit stronger, general GPS issues with every TF201, not noticing any horrible WiFi performance either.
I've noticed some minimal Burning over short periods when I have it screen maxed out and with IPS+ on as well and the screen with a fixed white bar or text . But then it goes away in five minutes once I change the image. Never gotten it to happen under Max brightness with out IPS+ or a white static image in conjunction.
I would return it. I also never keep anything static on my screen. Even my wallpaper is active and moving. I've seen LCD burn in all the time on desktop computer screens.
I saw something like this over the weekend.
I had it docked and was writing a blog post in Documents to Go. I spent probably about 3 hours on it. After I was finished with it, I noticed D2G didn't have a spell checker so I closed it and went into Polaris Office to see if it did.
Underneath the transparent gray of the file screen, I noticed something looked weird. I took a closer look and I could still see shadows of the blog post I wrote.
I turned it off and couldn't see any burn in the screen. I rebooted it and went back to Polaris and didn't see it after the reboot.
Now I'm debating sending it back for a warranty replacement.

Impression of new C1 Serial Prime

Finally after long weeks and days of patiently waiting, I got a chance to snatch up my first prime from best buy today (In store pickup 32gb gray)... boy was a I excited!!!
I've been eye'ing this forum and transformer forums since mid decemeber so I pretty much know every nasty/sad/positive thing there is too it.
Despite knowing all the potential risk of having a malfunctioning tablet I took the risk hoping this new batch had some tweaks/fixes from Asus.
To my suprise the tablet i got today was the new C1 serial # tablets.
I had very high expectations and hoped that the negative things i heard about the prime was... just a silly rumor. Unfortunately life is not that convenient and disappointment came almost... too fast. Starting from the intial boot ive spotted 3 white dead pixels and 1 red dead pixel... Boy that was a pretty big blow to the face. I've tried all sorts of pixel unstuck/fixer apps but none seemed to help.
Next thing i noticed was severe light bleeding on top right corner of the screen and along the entire edges on the bottom. For the most part, I really don't mind minor light bleeding. I understand that is the technology we're dealing with right now and ive owned several monitors that had this problem. But the light bleeding on the tablet was too noticable for me to overlook and almost disgusting... for a $500 tablet.
Wifi/GPS *sigh* feel free to skip this as yall seen billion cries about this, i can confirm that its 100% true. Ive upgraded to the latest firmwire ICS bla bla bla, WIFI is AMAZING standing RIGHT NEXT to the router. Other than that i get CONSTANT wifi drops, slow connection, and extreme weak signal... GPS i won't even go there.
Last thing is the dull unresponsive touchscreen. I had the EEE Pad TF101 and had no issues with this but on the prime the touch sensitivity is absolutely horrible. When scrolling on websites it feels either choppy or unresponsive. When i scroll the page with the left thumb the page barely even moves... I had extremely high hopes for ICS since everyone seemed to be crazy about it but in all honesty I didn't experience/feel any smoothness even with forced hardware acceleration.
I gotta say after seeing sow many negative reviews/impression i never thought i'd be writing one myself... I guess i feel a bit cheated as I secretly hoped that I could be one of those lucky guys who had a perfect Prime and wondered what other people were complainging about... Now i can truely understand your pain and disappointment. I'm returning the prime tomorrow to BB and ordering a new one via Newegg - if the newegg one i rcv is no better i am officially giving up on the Prime. It's really sad, I mean after all the hype and waiting you finally get your hands on it and realize the product you paid $500 does not live up to what you've hoped for.
Why release new products with new serials if it doesn't address any of the previous problems?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
**Update** 01/27
So ive returned my C1 serial tablet back to best buy and received my Champange 32gb from newegg today. The serial # this time was BC - immediately ive noticed better / less light bleeding around the top corner but acceptable.
There are 2 dead pixels (white) but not as bad my previous one... at least this time there isnt a red one. Overall the screen responsiveness seems a lot better for me too and seems like overall ICS experience is smoother.
Best of all so far i have not had one WIFI drop nor poor wifi connection. Im getting same d/l speed as my galaxy s2 phone.
I think this one is going to be a keeper for now.
Wow, sir may I say thank you for that I was worried that the C1 would have big display fixes. But, according to you that's not the case anyone else with a C1 have a story to tell? I have a BC serial btw.
I picked up my 64gb version with C1 serial number today. I have some small light bleed in the bottom left corner, but not really noticeable. It's actually in the same spot as my TF101. I will say that my wifi signal is weaker than the 101, but haven't had any drops or noticeable lag. I get 2 bars where the other gets 3. I have fully updated to 11.1 as well. My only issue so far has been market freeze while updating several apps. Hasn't happened again though. I got mine from MicroCenter. So far I'm very happy with it. Very sorry to hear yours is having issues. Hope the one from newegg is better!
Got a Champagne C1 today, haven't had a lot of time to play with it but the light bleed is indeed pretty bad... One spot in the bottom left, all along the right side as well.
The sensitivity is great though, wifi I have not had any problems though I do live in a condo. Seems very responsive, typing on the screen is fine so far (no keyboard yet). No dead pixels. Only quibble I have is the backlight bleed which is honestly only really noticable on a jet black screen with high backlight.

Thanks man. So far I never had a bad prodcut from Newegg and im crossing my fingers. Glad your happy with yours.
I just got my BC serial# Prime 64Gb from a dec 25th pre-order from Amazon and I can say I am happy with the screen. There is no light bleed I can see (I might not be as picky) and the screen's touch is very responsive. I do have the reduced WiFi signal everyone else has, but no dropped or laggy wifi signal. It updated to ICS 4.0.3 within 10 minutes and has not had any problems.
As for the GPS, I havent had a chance to mess with it yet.
This is my third attempt for a good transformer prime. Got my 64 gig from amazon yesteday and very happy with this one. Yes its a BC model, but the only issue I have is some very minor light bleed. everything else is fine.
Got a C1 64GB grey delivered from Amazon yesterday. The only problem that I have is a very slight light bleed on the bottom left corner. I have no dead pixels and my wifi is perfect. Screen is also nice, bright and responsive.

I got a BC serial prime today from staples (canada), right out of the box there 2 noticeable 2 inch long scratch (two of them parallel) on the backplate and a small dot of bluish ink that cannot be wiped off. Also beside the camera rear lens appears to have a small scratch like stain that can be removed. Are stores selling refurbished as new items now?

Wow, sir may I say thank you for that I was worried that the C1 would have big display fixes. But, according to you that's not the case anyone else with a C1 have a story to tell? I have a BC serial btw.

There are (nor will there be in the future) display fixes. Light bleeds and dead pixels are part of IPS screens. Even ASUS warranty states that such things, unless they are excessive, do not fall under warranty. If a store takes the item back for light bleeds and dead pixels, it is basically on their head.
This will not change unless ASUS will up their quality control standards and start throwing out light bleed and dead pixel screens, which will drive up the costs of the devices due to screens they cannot use.
Even TF101's have light bleeds and dead pixels today, this won't change. And it is simply more prominent with TF201 screens due to IPS+.

This is true. For the most part i think vast majority of consumers expect such results but sometimes its more noticable than others - thats what kills us. I showed my tablet to the return guy at in best buy and he was pretty shocked too and appologized - return was immediate and no restocking fee. I mean 4 dead pixels and 1 stuck red pixel is def on the excessive side ONTOP of severe light bleeding all across the board.
Thanks to OP, that confirmed me to again post-pone my purchase of Android tablet.
I put a lot of hope to ASUS TF201, but they blew it.
Well, MWC 2012 is just next month, it will be interesting to see the next wave of Android tablets. I don't know, my heart now probably go to the rumored 11.6" Samsung tablet, even though I must swallow the TouchWiz ... *difficult*
NOTE: Probably the one who has no WIFI issue is the one who has "better" WiFI AC/router. Because I think there are quite a lot of range for this kind of device. From cheap mediocre to expensive overkill one.
I purchased two Australian Channel TF201 32GB Golds both with C10KAS***** serial numbers.
I have found the majority of problems people have posted about do not apply to my two units. (each had very tiny light bleed in the bottom left corner, and that is about all)
It's scary how many problems people are posting, seems mostly in the US.
Sorry to hear about your troubles OP, my C1 serial primes have great screens and everything
Samsung, Apple almost don't have these problems. Even my €170 Hannspad/G-Tab didn't have backlight bleeding. I mean come on Asus..
OP, please search or read before posting, i already put up a C1 discussion thread yesterday.

I got my C1 64 gigger from Amazon yesterday and i dont see any issues so far. I am actualy blown away at how fast and smooth this is. I performed the ICS update prior to loading any apps and all is working great.
I see a resolution about dead pixels on my warranty card (local one in Slovakia). There is written that dead pixels does not fall under warranty unless there is a combination of 8 dead pixels at same place. It also specifies whether they are dead "white" or "black" ones.
As mentioned before, I guess it has something to do with a display technology...but honestly, does it really matter for you - 3 dead pixels or some light bleeding visible only in a boot stage?

I really hate dumb questions like these. Why ask questions when the answer is almost always relative?
YES IT DOES MATTER...I don't want dead pixels, not even one. I don't want light bleeding...
Its pretty dissapointing that the C1's are having the same issues. Thanks for the update.

Touchpad Light bleed

I was wondering if it is worth sending the touchpad in for light bleed. My upper left hand corner bleeds bad enough that any dark scene, item, picture it shows up. HP said they will do advanced replacement for it for this issue. However, not sure I want to toy around with getting a different unit with a different issue.
How common is light bleed on these and how severe is bad enough to get it repaired?
Mine has rather visible bleed. I won't get it repaired since TP has no service support in my country.
I would personally get it fixed since they will fix it free under warranty. That said, you don't really have to do it now if you don't want to, you could wait until after you have had it longer and get closer to the end of the one year warranty.
Aren't people STILL complaining about this with the iPad 2? Mine has some bleed, but I figure it just isn't worth the fuss for only a marginally better unit.
Is this a common problem or did I just get unlucky.
Mine had light bleed, I talked to HP, they said they will fix it, I sent it off Monday and got an email yesterday saying they were shipping my replacement back, which is cool I guess

I will be curious what the results are. I wish my bleed didn't bother me.
Does anyone know if you do advanced replacement if you can keep which ever one you like better. I only ask because I could have them send me one, then try it and if it is not better send it back instead of my other one.
mine has light bleed too.
mine has some as well
my replacement was just delivered, however im stuck at work until 4pm, i'll update later if it doesnt get stolen off my front porch lol

or a video of it being tossed on the porch hehe
So I got it, still has light bleed in the same spot......however the cracks are no longer present by the speakers, I don't know if I should contact HP again or just deal with it, it kinda sucked being without it for almost a week
How bad is the bleed. I mean mine is very visible even at 50% with anything dark in that corner.

I am thinking I will give advance replacement a whirl. well.. nm.. just called and advanced replacement program has been canceled.

LCD "Mura" Defect (aka, clouding, hot spot, white spot)

My Prime has developed a small bright spot in the center of the screen. It's only visible on white or light pages. I didn't drop the tablet or anything, it just appeared. Anyone else experience this?
EDIT: Here's a link showing a laptop with similar looking spots. The one on my Prime is much smaller than any of these, but it's a similar looking mark. I tried getting a picture of mine, but had trouble doing so.

EDIT2: I've learned that the defect I'm talking about is called "mura," or "clouding."

I have 4 of those spots.. three are within one inch and one of them is at least 3 pixels. I also have poor wifi, so I want to kill two birds with one stone. as soon Asus has a fix for the wifi I will rma..
I have the exact same "brighter" spot at lower center of the screen, don't remember it being there when I first got it... it's very annoying, I think I will send it back for repair.
My friend's first prime had that on his screen (2 white dots) when he bought it only visible on a white screen. He returned it for a new one. Thats why its important to check for those too when you first get your prime and put it through inspection, Just open up the notepad like app, that one has a white screen.
got one too. need to send it back for repair, just been too lazy to do it...
Read somewhere that those are stuck pixels. There's an app in the market that's suppose to fix stuck pixels as well.

I'm 100% certain the spot wasn't there when I first got the tablet, as I did a very close inspection of it. Actually, I was reading through a thread in an iPad forum and there were reports of spots like this showing up on some iPads after a while.

Thanks, but this is different than a stuck pixel, which I also have (I found the stuck pixel when I first got the tablet, but it's so unnoticeable 99% of the time that it doesn't bother me). The link below shows similar looking bright spots on a laptop (the spot I have is much smaller than any of these, but it's the same type of spot).
http://pics.livejournal.com/laptop_mechanic/pic/000p062e
same story here. my prime has 5 bright spots (hot pixel) as well. i did not notice them when i got prime last year. pixel fixer can't fix these either. i can live with these spots though.

I have the same problem, 1 bright pixel just below the home screen indicator.
It doesnt bother me that much, its the only problem i have with my prime and knowing theres lots of people with more problems im not gonna return it for a new one, having the chance to get one worse than i had...
My phone had the same thing when I first received it (still does), but it was my understanding it was a "hot spot" created by adhesive or undue pressure in manufacturing. It's not stuck/dead pixels, in my case at least, and my Prime has no such spots.
I however don't know what would cause something like this over time. Seems to me something in the screen is poorly manufactured and overheating...
Sent mine back and was told by Asus that the white spot is a kind of light bleed that caused by pressure at the area, they will replace the panel for me.
I've noticed that mine has a few white spots similar to who you guys are describing. Mine has two about an inch apart from each other near the lower left-middle of the screen, and another near the right hand side of the screen. I don't notice it when other colours are present, but on a white/light surface, it can get very annoying. I'm thinking I might call ASUS and see if I can get it RMA'd since it has other problems as well. The WiFI is actually pretty ok, but GPS is a total bust. I don't really care about the GPS that much, but it might be what I need to send this in. I'm just worried the white spots will get worse with time.
After reading up on this a little more, the name for the white spots we're talking about is "mura" (google "LCD mura" and you'll get some hits). It looks like it's somewhat common on cheaper displays.
Also have this appearing on mine and also didn't have it before.
I have only noticed it in the last week since I installed the latest update.
I only really notice it on the XDA site.
In my case it's definitely not mura (clouding), but more like pressure spots or pinpoints (usually 2-3 pixels in size.) They are more distinctive in shape than clouding. Either way, sucks for any of us to get these kind of issues. I've actually got an RMA # for mine and will be sending it out either tonight or tomorrow whenever I get a chance.
this can be mura, spots, poinpoints or w/e
i can tell you another one..... so i was working very hard on many several things on my tfp.... sending emails, writing proposals, getting images, working on ideas ect.
I started to get annoyed on how fast the tfp goes to sleep, so i decided to put it to Never. So it never went to sleep and it was awesome because my concentration kept going and i was jumping from my laptop to my tfp back to my laptop ect.
THEN.... i decided to go to sleep and i left my tfp opened connected while it was charging. I completely FORGOT that i had disabled tfp from sleeping. So it sat on the Home screen of my launcher.
When i woke up several hours later, i started to use my tfp and i noticed there was a white area that on every screen it was still there.
It was the outline of the icons! This is the reason why screensavers we're created so this wouldnt happen. This is an excerpt from our trusty wikipedia: (btw, apparently this isnt suppose to happen in lcd's but i assure you it happened to me on my tfp, its not that bad though, as i barely see it sometimes)
Before the advent of LCD screens, most computer screens were based on cathode ray tubes (CRTs). When the same image is displayed on a CRT screen for long periods of time, the properties of the exposed areas of phosphor coating on the inside of the screen gradually and permanently change, eventually leading to a darkened shadow or "ghost" image on the screen. Cathode ray televisions, oscilloscopes and other devices that use CRTs are all susceptible to phosphor burn-in, as are plasma displays to some extent.
Screen-saver programs were designed to help avoid these effects by automatically changing the images on the screen during periods of user inactivity.

So, let me ask you this OP, did you by any chance leave your tfp on for a long time with something on the screen? and the glow that you have now resembles that image/icon/object you had on the tfp?
If that happened to anyone, hit the thanks

Nope. I can say with 100% confidence that I didn't leave anything displayed on the screen that could have caused this. The spot is very small, and is just a little random blotch that doesn't resemble any type of image/icon/object. I've tried taking a picture of it with the camera on my smartphone, but I get those vertical bars that you get when taking a picture of a computer monitor and it's hard to make anything out in the picture as a result. Would using a regular camera allow me to get a good picture? If so, I'll see if I can borrow one and post a pic.
Also, the spot wasn't there when I first got my Prime, and it appeared after about a month.
As of now, I've decided against RMAing it, as (1) I'm afraid of getting back another unit with one of the other myriad of TFP problems, and (2) I don't feel like being without my Prime for 4-6 weeks.

Add 1 to the of people with the pinpoint brightness issue, mine showed up after about a month of use.
I am also waiting to RMA or exchange at BestBuy once he seem to have all of the issues worked out since I have one of the relatively good ones now and don't want a broken one.
dead or stuck pixel
i have almost a half inch bar worth of dead or stuck pixels with more grey tint cloudy looking smugges..on the top portion of my screen..i can only see this when the screen has grey or anything in the grey family. i have not dropped, got it wet, or anythin to it..its been working great for me until about 4 days ago. how and what do i do about getting a rma. i have emailed asus but stilll not heard back..its realy starting to piss me off..this is going to be my 3 one..the other two i was still in my return time at best buy and game stop..this one i am not..any help will be great..would post pics but when i take the pics its hard to see or tell what i am talking about..
