[Q] Wifi keeps disconnecting (4.0.3 LPQ) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since I flashed the official 4.0.3 XXLPQ rom, the wifi keeps disconnecting every minute (and reconnecting). All I see is toasts that "connected to X-wifi"... this happens about every minute.
Phone is rooted with siyah alpha7 kernel, and I flashed the original kernel because I thought that it will resolve the issue. But problem is still there...
I don't know what to do anymore. Policy is set to never sleep (first option).
Im using a PCI card as a thetering device and the software connectify-me.
Security is set to WPA2-PSK.

Ad hoc isnt support well by ICS just wait for a patches wpa_supplicant... I got the same problem and sometimes my phone wont find my ad hoc started with connectivY...
But one option can help make a unsecure ad hoc without wep and and and open ad hoc for testing...

[Q] Wifi Tethering gives "Error"

Hello all,
Running UnNamed 1.04v with entropy's latest (10/20) kernel.
This problem also happened with Unnamed 1.03, with entropy's 10/16 kernel.
This problem also happened with a completely stock ROM, rooted with the CWM kernel.
USB tethering works as normal.
Wifi tethering works sporadically. My laptop can connect (windows 7, lenovo X201), it works for a few minutes, then ceases to work. The WIFI icon gives a yellow exclamation mark saying that it has no internet connection.
I reinstalled windows 7 recently, the same thing occurs.
Updated the intel WIFI 6300 drivers, same thing occurs.
I changed DNS settings to OpenDNS, the same thing occurs.
What leads me to believe this problem isn't because of my laptop is the following...
When tethering ceases to work on my laptop and I try to disable tethering on the phone under settings>wireless and network>tethering and portable hotspot, it takes around 5-7 seconds then says "Error". The WIFI tethering icon remains in the notification bar as if tethering is still enabled. If I check the box next to tethering to "enable" it again, tethering finally turns off and the blue tethering icon removes itself from the notification bar.
If I turn off tethering before it craps out on my laptop it turns off normally within 1-2 seconds without saying "error."
This has been reproducible over 15 times.
It happens whether or not the hotspot is encrypted with WPA2, the SSID is hidden or not, or is completely open.
Any ideas why this is? WIFI tethering was rock solid on my old infuse 4G, and it really comes in handy during lunch time at my university when the wifi is saturated to the point where its completely unusable.
logcat/dmesg
Mines does the same thing. USB tethering works without issues, however wireless gives me issues. When I connect via wireless, it works for about 30 seconds then my laptop gives me a limited connectivity signal (tablet just connects but no internet). Tried turning off my wireless hotspot and I got the same symptoms you had, with the Error.
Running stock rooted with latest Entropy DD experimental Kernel. Tested on different kernels and the same thing happens (ZedoMax kernel and Entropy non-experimental kernel).
There was a report a while back that stock wi-fi tethering will cease to work if your phone screen turns off (even though you have wi-fi sleep policy set to never). Sounds like another bug in the current Samsung ROM. And in that case, the guy paid for tethering plan and is using the phone totally stock without rooting.
That is definitely unfortunate. I'll have to test it with the screen to see if that works. I tried to upload a screenshot but for some reason it won't allow me to post .png images. That is also crappy because that's what our screen shots are formatted as! (OT - anyone know how to change this?)

Again, logcat/dmesg of the errors. If a person has a problem, and it might be kernel related, it isn't going to get fixed without either a logcat/dmesg or the ability for the kernel developer to reproduce the problem.
Every time I go for dinner at the local taco place, I tether my Tab 10.1 and the phone's screen remains off. Therefore, kernel developer CANNOT reproduce this issue. So the backup is logcat/dmesg.
Sounds like WIFI sleep policy is shutting it off with screen off.
I need to clarify: it's not my issue (I do not use tethering as of now) and I have no way to verify or test because I haven't rooted my phone yet. I only need to root my if I need to enable tethering. But bugs like this doesn't worth my trouble to root the phone.
Here the original thread that reported this issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1291814
It is probably one of those bugs that affects some but not others, e.g AP mobile data usage bug and WiFi sleep policy stuck in NEVER even if you change to turn off while sleep.
Tested to see if I had a screen off bug but that wasn't the case.
Now I need to learn how to use alogcat...

If you don't have problems, logcat/dmesg aren't of much use.
I can already get reference "known working" logcats/dmesgs from my own device.
Edit: Oh wait, in your case it's a problem whether screen on or off? misread you.
No problem, thanks for looking into my issue!
My issue is that wifi tethering doesn't work at all. USB tethering works without any hiccups. Error message appears after a short time and/or when I turn off the wireless hotspot.
I sent you a PM.
I am having the same issues, regardless of rom /kernel
Does anyone know if this phone supports infrastructure wifi when the tethering is working properly? Trying to plan a car computer with a galaxy player 5 up front and dlna hard drive in back and hopefully tie it all together w the gs2
Entropy, i'll be PMing you a logcat in a few minutes.
Edit: PM sent.
ALSO: this problem occurs if the screen is on or off.

Problems with wifi on ICS official and ROM Cook (4.0.3 and 4.0.4)

Hi everyone! I am new to this forum. I have something to ask.
Currently I am having an Xperia Ray. Rooted. Boot loader unlocked. Running Ray Onium v7 GB with Aire Kernel v7. Everything runs perfectly without a glitch.
However when I update to ICS, both stock ROM or Cook ROM (Ray Onium v6 ICS, JJ ROM 2.5 and team Kang ROM), I find that my wifi is not useable.
I'm sitting about 1m away from the router, the signal is excellent but I can't browse the internet or go to the market.
I have tried both with 4.0.3 and 4.0.4. However when I connect to an open network, everything is fine. I'm using WPA2 encryption for my Linksys 54g router.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
What kernel did u use

I'm using XRay 6.2.5, it doesn't work. I also try Aire, Official Kernel, but my ray still cant access the internet. However when using GB, everything's fine.

I've tried with SEUS, no luck.
The point here is that it gets connected very fast, however there is no internet. On GB everything is perfect.
I have the same issue, everything perfectly on GB.
Sent from my naughty Xperia Ray.
I've been having similar problems with my wifi since updating to ICS. My problems are a little different though. WPA2 network here, the phone can see the network fine and it connects quickly, I can browse and stuff just fine, but every so often the network just /disconnects/. Usually it'll reconnect a few seconds later, but sometimes I have to open the wifi settings screen before it'll reconnect, and sometimes it doesn't reconnect at all. When it doesn't reconnect at all, the settings screen says my network is either out of range (it picks it up the moment I hit Scan) or had an "authentication problem", and I have to manually connect to the network.
Kinda weird and very frustrating, because sometimes I'm connected for hours without a problem, and sometimes I'm getting disconnected every few minutes.
When SE released their alpha and beta ICS roms, the wifi either didn't see my home network, or it saw my home network but couldn't connect, instead just infinitely cycling through "Connecting, Disconnected, Not In Range, Connecting"
Same problem happens regardless of what kernel or ROM I use, it happens in CM9, AOKP and every other ICS ROM I've tried. :/
A similar problem it seems...
When I want to download an app via Google Play simply it doesn't start. I touch back button and try to download it again and voila! The same fast wireless..
But it simply does not start at first try. Not only Google Play downloads but also all other internet using applications do that strange behaviour.

I have two Rays at home... one on GB and one on ICS.... the ICS one has the same problems, I think switching your wifi router to WEP seems to help and so is changing to B from N.. but then you lose higher speeds and security... but that does seem to help. On the other hand the GB ray has no problems whatsoever....
Hope this helps someone figure out a solution

Your welcome. I just also flashed official Nordic 4.0.4 from here... And my router has something called " protected mode", that is says helps for that- if WiFi signals are too many around. Try installing WiFi analytics from google play... It's free-
use a free WiFi channel.
Turn on such protected mode if you can
I also activated something called "intellistream" that prioritizes streaming in WiFi.
So far, it's going well. This way I kept the 801n and WPA security.
Before this, I was sitting 7-8 steps away from the router and kept dropping connections.
Hope it helps.... No expert here.... Joined the forum for the same reason...
tomorrow after work ill test as much scenarios as possible. it cant be router related since i have the same issue with 7 different routers. 0 problems with GB, always the same issue on ICS.
connected solid and sound, no dropping in signal, but no internet flow whatsoever.. this is the only thing that keeps me on GB -.-
Any progress?
Yeah same problem with me.
There's something wrong with ICS Rom, that needs to be fixed
Replace file
Unzip and copy this file in /system/bin (replace with original). This should fix the wifi connection. You will need root for this.
So far, so good

My data internet works absolutely fine, but im having trouble configuring the WIFI. It's taken over 3 hours and ive given up searching the forum.
When I connect to Wifi via the settings - I get the screen saying "turning wifi on". It doesnt do nothing, just constantly stays like that.
If i go into the advance settings i have...
network notifications checked.
wifi frequency band set to auto - ive changed this but doesnt do anything.
I have a mac address.
and for IP it says unavailable.
Somebody please help me orelse i might end up losing my hair very soon.
Thank you.
Any ideas? Anyone?
wifi direct
Im having another problem with wifi but its with resurrection rom 2.3. Donno how to configure wifi direct or what explorer to use to send via wifi. All i can find is a tick box that says wifi direct.
I'd flash a stock ROM. Then you'll see if its a problem with your current rom or not.

Yeah, I've had same kind of problems with a stock ROM. Now the WiFi has been working just fine but sometimes I had the same problem as you do. No idea why it does it.
I have a not rooted galaxy, and I have the same prob. It mostly happens when you turn on/off wifi directly from settings instead of going to settings --> connections --> wifi etc. (ics feature)
I solve the problem with rebooting my phone...
Only takes 30 seconds.
Hope i helped!

Hi, Thanks for your reply.
Can I ask what you mean by a stock ROM - do you mean one that is not insecure rather the original?
I fix it by turning airplane mode on and off. But it doesn't occur after I changed to a custom rom

Dial *#*#526#*#* wait for some
time until you see ‘process was
successful’ on the screen. You
can repeat this whenever you see
this problem.
If that does not work, Search Google playstore for an app called FIX MY WIFI. It's a paid app but
I've tried it in the past and it worked after reboot.
Good luck

Jellybean wireless possible Fix

Hi,
Like many others I've had issues with WiFi staying connected since using the jellybean leaks. I had the same with CM10, but if I go back to a stock ICS rom then it works fine. if I reverted back to any jellybean rom then again it will not stay connected.
For me the issue is fixed by change the security on the router from WPA/WPA2 auto to just WPA. With this it connects every time. If I set my router to use WPA2 then again it drops all the time, so it would seem that is has an issue with WPA2.
Maybe others want to give this a test to see if it works for them. Currently I am using DLH6 stock leak.
Maybe this has been posted elsewhere but I thought I would share my findings.
Cheers.
Not working for me. Wifi drops when I move away from the router

Confirmed here.
Im using a beta version of Omega v15 based on DLH6.
I could not connect to wifi no matter what I did.
tried router reboots, changing wifi channel etc.
The status when connecting showed:
- Authenticating (normal)
- Obtaining IP Address (normal)
- Saved, Secured (should show connected)
This repeats several times, before eventually the status shows
Network disabled. Poor connection.
I then tried configuring static IP
This time it connects for a fraction of a second then disconnects and instead of the message 'Network disabled. Poor connection', now it shows:
'Temporarily avoiding poor connection'
I then tried installing different kernels - no improvement.
The only solution that worked was configuring network as WPA only.

Here's my fix go back to ics
I get absolutly no connection.. :crying:
From what I've read these tips might also help:
- Change WiFi channel to a free one
- Disable 5Ghz wifi on your router
- Disable 802.11n on you rrouter, just use 802.11g
Hopefully Samsung fixes these issues before releasing official 4.1.1
With the leaked JB stock rom my Wi-Fi works fine. However, with anything related to AOKP or CM10 I now cannot connect at all. It worked previously but something has changed in the last 10days to stop it. I flashed the leaked initial leaked JB stock rom and that's when the problems started when I went back to CM10.
I have a Netgear DGN2000, WNDR3700v2 and also edimax range extender. It prompts me for the password, tries to connect but then just saves the config without connecting. Tried with/without 5g, g only etc.. still no joy.

Use Odin to flash a stock ics Rom and that will fix the WiFi problems on cm10

I tried all solutions that are mentioned here. But I always get disconnected when I move away. I'm at 100% ICS stock rom (updated through KIES today) and still not solved.
Going to bring it back tomorrow and hope to get a replacement or a fix by samsung.
IMO:
your modem changed when you flashed the leak Rom. Easy way to fix You must flash modem through or odin or cwm. or any stock ROM via odin.
(nothing to do with your WiFi router.)
Have you guys tried updating the firmware of your router?
no problems for me.
using Omega v14 (XXDLH4)
Baseband (XXLH1)
Connecting fine with (WPA, WPA2, WEP)
If the problem is with the modem guys, why not use another modem or the one previously used in stock ICS?
How will a modem help WiFi when WiFi is a product of the kernel ??

I have no idea. I just made that suggestion because I saw the other guys discussing using a different modem.
Anyways. The kernel I'm using is the one that came with OMEGA rom, which is the stock kernel that came with the LH4 firmware.
Just to say that this wifi 'speed fix' actually fixes this connection issue for me

Can custom rom damage my wifi?

Hello, i've rooted my phone and installed black bean rom, and after while i've detected that my wifi doesn't work (doesn't connect to router even with good password). Because if that i've installed FoxHound Rising 1.5.4 JellyBean Beta and it kinda helped, now it connect to router but lose connection very offten and it take ages to load webpage or doesn't even load it. I've made screenshot, can someone tell my what white thing next to my wifi means?

Btw, my network data works fine.

Ok first of all you need to realise that those roms are BETAS, they are based on LEAKED otas. They are not completely ready to be released to the public yet.
That symbol is for WiFi direct, it's a bug in DLH9 leak and can't be removed unless you flash the WiFi direct fix floating around the forum.
It does no harm anyway.
