[Q] SD Card fit - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Anyone else find the micro SD Card fit into the tablet annoying? It just sticks out enough to catch your hand on.
Anyone tried shaving the end of a micro SD Card with success? I'm not sure how they are constructed..

Haha. I've got a 4gb card I'm gonna try when I'm home. Will let ya know. It is kinda annoying isn't it. I thought it would be just like the blanking one. It's only too big by a couple of mm...

Yes I don't like the sd card sticking out because I have hit it accidentally and the Card Pop out. I did recently get a Case for my Prime and Dock and the Case has an edge that sticks out enough to protect the Card.

did the same thing, I've still hit it maybe once, but I use the prime daily so once every 3 months is cool with me. ... without it I could see hitting it more often for sure.

There's a thread around the forum on this exact topic. People tried shaving the card with bad results. Apparently there isn't much space between the plastic edge and the silicon chip. Some people used a small bit of tape to keep it lodged in the device. Others set up an alarm to go off if it should come out unintentionally.
For me, my leather case has a hole for it, but the way the case fits, I can't accidentally touch the card.

Oh is there? Sorry I did have a search before posting but didn't see anything.
I know in regular SD cards there isn't much space, not seen a micro one taken apart..

Don't shave or grind your microSD card.
The silicon is incredibly close to the edges of the cards, and shaving off as much as a millimeter of plastic will cause you to cut into the silicon irreperably damage your card.

I can confirm that u shave it u kill it, just not enough space to be cut off to make it worth it. Wasn't able to open up the card, seems to be formed from a single piece of something.. oh well

Nope.
Some people have put tape over the card so that its rough edge doesn't bug them so much. Others have put a drop of clear silicon on the side of the card to make it less likely to fall out if you toss the tablet into a bag or something.
But aside from taking the Prime apart and desoldering/resoldering the card reader to its in a little bit more there is no way around the protrusion. It was intentionally designed the way it is so that you can get the card out easily.
Having said that, I have been using my Prime with a 32GB card in place since day 1 and after a little while you just ignore that the card pokes out a little. Some people have had problems, but I have never once had the card pop out accidentally.
Just ignore it for a while and you may find that it actually isn't a problem.

That's what I did. Worked great for 6 weeks. I got used to it so much and it never poped out....
... until last weekend. Was travelling and the SD card was lost somewhere. Did not even recognize it.
So, your advise might not be the best.

Its not so much the worry about it popping out that was bugging me, it was more the fact that holding the tablet in landscape thats exactly where my palm falls. I might explore other ways to make this better to hold. i like the idea of a blob of silicone on the end to make the card less sharp and more of a founded surface to hold. ive got 1 more spare SD card im ready to play with so will let ya all know if i do some more experimenting...

the engineers of asus should think more......

I think there is a big engeneering mistake and users should be aware and take care.
When put the sd card in the slot it will stick out to much so when touch it or put it in a bag or whatever the sd card will com3 out of the slot.
After many times put it back because not see the card sign in the i finally lost it.
Told my gf and said well u did not put the card good in the sl she said and showed me there was nocard sticking out of the slot....
I said well get it out and i show you how it fits in mine.........
Guess what ?????????????????
Good guess she also lost her card same way. Besides the loss of 2x times 50 euro for a 10 class card.our data is onthe street !!!!!!!!!!!!
Asus did a bad job we think.
So all pay attention to this.
So for the new cards wewill put some tape over it so we cant loose it anymore.
Other sugestions????????
Grtz
Not an ideal solution, but I too noticed the fact that the card stuck out some.
As such I took a razor and shaved the edge of the card down, I need to use my nail to push the card in now and it seats flush against the side of the tab.
I've accidentally unmounted the sd card with my palms a couple times.. It's almost as annoying as accidentally pressing the sd icon and unmounting it through software. I wish it didn't pop up. I'm aware I have a sd card inserted.. I don't need a notification for it!

I've only bumped mine once , and also agree about the sd card access point , i prefer to use my apps to view files opposed to the icon on the bottom, so far the worst thing is the little rubber cover that gets lost every time i have to charge..

BUY SMALLER SD CARDS DUH! THEY MAKE MANY SIZES FRACTIONS OF AN INCH IN SIZE EVERYTHING IS BASED ON MICRO SD STANDARDS SO FIND ON SMALLER OR JUST SPOT ON THOSE SPECS

No way but they make slightly different dimensions lol! Like a hair difference in size! The length of the manufacturer is their choice the main thing that's a standard is the width they can make a micro sd card 40 feet long and it would still work! Lol

Timeout, there's a rubber cover for the docking/charging input?? I have the other two, but never noticed the other. Am I missing something?
well the shaving idea seems a better solution then tape it. Not know how far must shave it but i will give it a try
yeah there is a plasticic protection clip but andcomes with it wheb get it out of the box. Probably idea is to protect the connector. Also this thing comes out to easy when work with the tablet. Probably same guy who enineerd the micro sd card slot. Hrrhrrrr
did the shaving test with gilette offcourse not work nice found out that sanding paper works more easy
By the way litle tip. Use the white original serted card as size reference(wnen not thrown away) and you have a perfect fit and card wont get out anymore by accident and need to remove by nail as it works with the original fill up the space card.
Yeah, NOT happy with the same card sticking out like this. Mine is in a temp sleave for a tf101 and that helps but I was very surprised. I originally spent time trying to figure out if the plastic place holder was some sort of adapter
I guess the rubber piece that covered my charging port might still be in the box, but I bet its gone. If it's not attached.....it's gonna get lost when it's that small
Hey guys, heads up: The razor/file system is not really safe. I just ruined a 16G MicroSD card by attempting to file down the back edge. I noticed that there was copper exposed, so I stopped, but I had already ruined the card. The Prime won't read it now. I'm kinda bummed.

That sucks Sorry to here that. Thanks for the heads up though.
I guess I really should have mentioned that you have to be really really careful.
I had a dead version of my exact card lying around so I tested it first. It is a hairs difference between perfect and screwed.
I think that my problem may be unique to my card, actually. I believe that it's an older SanDisk Category 2 card, so it may be constructed differently than most newer microSD cards. I barely took anything off of the outside edge before I hit the copper. I didn't even get close to taking the card down to where it would be flush with the edge of the Prime.
Yep, my wife lost her's within a couple of days with the prime. Add this to this list of design fails with the Bluetooth, GPS, power button... etc.
I think a bigger issue is the connector for the charger and HDMI. There isn't any support on on side of the charger connection and same on the HDMI. Feels like it will bend and brake every time I use the Tablet connect to charger or HDMI.

Yes it's super delicate this will be the thinnest tablet out for awhile because of this reason unless they use some sort of induction charging or some super weird charger that's super small and circular but then it would take all day to charge

Would you guys mind posting pictures of both successful and unsuccessful (too far in) cards that you have attempted to file down? Maybe this way we could all get a better idea of how much might be too much. I know they'll vary a bit from card to card but it could be useful to more people here who want to try filing down. Thanks!

[Q] how far does a micro SD stick out?

i've read that the micro SD card sticks out of the case. can someone please take a pic?
i plan on using one with the prime so this is a concern. i can't imagine it being usable if the card isn't flush with the case. what about damage to the card? or the card simply falling out? why would asus design it like this?
It sticks out about 1 mm. I have read that someone has said that there is a pny card that is flush, wish I new for sure

aren't all micro SD cards the same size (physically)?
With the card in, I scored across the back right flush with the case. In practice, half of the remainder could stick out with minimal risk. This is a sandisk card - all will have some variation in size (+/1 0.1mm???). I don't feel too worried about this card coming out by accident, but might be tempted to radius the edge slightly.

Gives a reasonable rendering of the colour too (on my monitor!)
Yeah I don't really believe this guy saying that it is flush without seeing it.
"Mine is flush" "Pny 8gb micro sdhc"
http://www.transformerforums.com/fo...ions/11916-micro-sd-card-sticks-out-side.html
My PNY 32GB Micro SDHC sticks out a little bit more than the power button.
there's no reason why i can't sand my card down a bit an paint the edge gold, is there?
I'm glad i read this because I was very un-sure if i was going to purchase a card because I've never filled my storage up before and after seeing that it sticks out I will not be getting one.
Edit: I didn't realize that the second picture was the card in the I guess "unlocked" position so I still thing about it.
Yes, the 2nd pic is the card in it's ejected position - just to give a sense of scale! The top of the card is flush, it's only because of the curvature of the case that the back sticks out.
Be careful if you do sand the card, mine seems to have pcb wiring under a thin layer of epoxy on the back.

why would asus engineer it like this? it's not like people take the micro sd in and out all the time. do they? i certainly don't. i would've preferred a cover to protect the card. i guess this is just another glaring oversight

Hmmm... I'm gonna wait til my case comes anyway and see if I even notice it once its int he case. I expect I won't... The Prime is really too thin on its own to hold comfortably anyway. My hand cramps. Hoping the case beefs it up just right and makes these hangy-out bits less noticeable.
Just lost my MicroSD card somehow, somewhere. Disappointed in the design...easily lost. I'd be VERY careful.
Unless you plan on using your Prime naked, you wont have any problem. If it is in a sleeve or case there wont be any problems at all. My sd card has been in there for 2 weeks and I've had no problems. It is in a sleeve unless I have it docked.
Yes, it sticks out a little bit. We all know how tiny tiny those cards are. I think it seem more pronounced due to the beveled side. I also read here (can't find it, it was in the general section) that the slot was sized to some sort of standard spec (??).
Ok, I took some pics but it's really hard to gauge depth. I think that guy must have meant "flush" as in flush with the outer most part of the side - it doesn't stick out past that, but it does stick out past the inner most part. As someone else mentioned it doesn't stick out any further than any volume rocker, but yea...I can see if you're gonna hold it naked it might pop out if you aren't careful.
duct tape ?
Face down - power, volume, sd
These show that the volume and sd stick out about the same
Now looking at it from the side......
Face down again

thanks.
given the glaring oversights, it appears like they pushed the design of this tablet out over a weekend. and the fact that they just announced the transformer prime TF700T with a PLASTIC back just lends more credence to the theory that the TF201 was a rush job.

[PSA] be careful with your SD card

just a PSA, but i had a class 10 32gb sd card that i purchased specifically for my prime. stuck it in it when i first received the tablet. all was great then one day i noticed that the sd card was MIA... this did not make me happy. but i tested another card and found out that if the tablet is set down on that edge that the sd card is on that the card will eject and fall out... kinda wish they would have made it a little harder to eject cuz im out like 70 bucks... dont want anyone else to fall victim to this tragedy. lucky there was not much stored on it.
Yep, another poor design on the Prime. There is a whole thread about this already. Damn card stick right out of its slot, not even close to being flush. Not even close.
Sucks man, I've had mine fall out once, but I saw it on the table. Definately a design flaw.
Put your MicroSD card next to the placeholder that comes with the Prime their placeholder is nearly perfect BUT it is not the correct MicrSD card size
Can anyone think of a way to mod this so it stays in? I don't want to use tape.. but I'm sure we can think of something
sand down your microSD card
Also, you could very easily get some clear silicon - home depot - and put a little dab between top of card and slot. This would keep it in and the beauty of silicon is that it is 100% firm enough to stay put BUT can be peeled off with no damage to the device. I use silicon in applications like this all the time.
Yep, I lost a 16 gb card I was using somewhere in my apartment, one minute it was there and the next it was gone. I must have bumped the card and it fell out.
This was like a day before my 32gig came in so I haven't really looked for it but hopefully it turns up...
I would sand mine down since it is a fairly cheap one but would have absolutely no clue how much is possible to sand until I either ruin the card or it happens to sit flush. It would be a gamble.

just go slow and do it at a slight angle to match the bezels curve. Need to go slow to now break through the plastic into the actual chip and to keep heat down so as not to fry the chip and keep dust out of the connecting electrodes.
Could someone take a high-res photo of the microSD card sticking out and post it?

Here are some pics of the problem at hand.
Mine has popped out a few times as well, but luckily I haven't lost it yet. I am going to test a cheap 2GB MicroSD and file it down to see if it fixes the issue.
Thanks! That's worse than I would have thought. Guess they didn't intend for people to permanently expand their memory with a microSD card. Would love to see the results of some sanding.
Personally, if I really wanted it to stay full time, I would likely do the clear silicon trick. It will, for a fact work, and not damage anything and it would take such a small amount.
Here's the only image I could find that shows a partial teardown of a microSD card. It appears that there's some kind of components located in the upper "handle" part

I'm just gonna put a piece of duct tape
Sorry for the repost.... I would definitely not be comfortable sanding down an expensive 32gb card.... But i would be willing to try to sand down a 2gb card that I have laying around here..... I'm not opposed to silicone but that defeats the purpose of having sleek lines
Maybe I will go back to having the tiny usb adapter for the micro sd card on my keychain and inserting when needed
On a brighter note my laptop dock will arrive tomorrow.... Tempted to stick a 64gb sd card in it just cuz I can.... Lol that and the 1tb swiss army knife I will be getting and i will have no storage problems....

I read somewhere, I think it was on the Android Forums, that they sanded down an SD card. He used the fake card that came in the slot since it fits flush. When I get one that is what I'm going to do (with one of my old one's first).

SD Card Fell Out

Ugh, just tried to play a movie on my Prime and realized the SD card had somehow fallen out.
Is there any suggestion out there on how to keep the friggin' things in? I'm out an SD card now- will have to go buy a new one. This tablet has been just one issue after another.
There is a thread in this forum about using a small strip of duct tape to thicken the SD card so it doesn't just spring out.
I've taking my 32GB micro SD and put it in an adapter, then put the adapter in the keyboard SD slot. I don't need my card fired across the room without me being aware of it.

This happens to me all the time. Short of buying a case, which I have and should just use, I don't think there is much to be done. The design is such that If the side of the prime that houses the sdcard comes into contact with another flat surface, it's most likely going to pop it out.
Happen to me also I put a piece of duct tape over it. I will trim an old card and see if that works

One of the more common solutions is tape. In the image below the poster used duct tape.

Lost one 32gb class 10 card, after it sprang out numerous times. I even tried to duct tape trick. Replaced with another 32gb class 10 card, but first tried to sand the edge of it so that it doesn't stand proud. I should have first tried it with one of my numerous lower capacity cards, as I ruined the brand new $50 card.
Score:
TP = +$100
Bimboy = -$100
Using the keyboard SD slot from now on.
I too have ALMOST lost my 32GB card. I pulled the pad out of my bag to play some music and noticed all my music was gone. Looked on the side and my heart sunk. I looked in my bag and there it was.
I have taken some pictures to compare sizes.
The first one is an 2 GB card on the bottom and the Fake plastic one that came with it on top.
And this one is of a 8GB card on top and the fake plastic one on the bottom
And this is just a picture of the 32 gb card in the slot.
I feel that someone missed the boat on this one. Did no one at ASUS test this slot before production?? VERY BAD QC!
My wife and I lost 4 32gb cards before I set up Tasker to maximize the volume and play an alarm every time the card is unmounted. Works like a charm, and since then, no more lost cards. When you hear the sound you just freeze and start looking around.
Obviously the actual microSD cards are larger than the fake one that was in the slot. The pictures shows that the microSD cards are flush with the edge of the Prime but "stick out" because the side is beveled.
As others have said - tape. I wouldn't put tape on the card, I'd put in over the card. who cares if a tiny strip of the side of the Prime gets a little "tacky" from tape.
I have a full body skinomi skin clear skin that covers my entire Prime and keyboard. But I never intended to use the little side strips to cover the sides. Instead, I HAVE cut a little strip to cover, and act as "tape", over the microSD card. Works great, leaves no residue, and I can remove and replace many many times. I have a lot more fresh strip left to cut whenever I need to replace it.
If I'd not gotten the skinomi, I would have gone with duct tape or electrical or maybe even painters tape - a thin strip to go over the top and secure it to the Prime.

My wife and I lost 4 32gb cards before I set up Tasker to maximize the volume and play an alarm every time the card is unmounted. Works like a charm, and since then, no more lost cards. When you hear the sound you just freeze and start looking around.

[Q] What's the Secret to Docking?

Well, I'm feeling a little silly right now, because I did a search and couldn't find anyone else having this problem--so maybe it's just me....
I just bought my Transformer Prime and dock, and am excited about using the two together. However, I'm finding it impossible to join the two.
The instructions say to "insert the eee Pad into the socket until it snaps into place." Well, it doesn't snap; it just sits there precariously, refusing to go in. The instructions also say to "Ensure that the latch completely moves to the right." Is the latch supposed to be moved manually before inserting the tablet, or does "snapping it in place" move the latch automatically? (I tried moving it manually, and was not able to.)
My wife, who is much better at this kind of thing than I, has tried as well, without success.
Are we doing something wrong, or did I buy defective equipment?
Thanks in advance!

Was going to say the same thing. I can almost guarantee that's the problem lol. Easy fix though.

haha, was thinking the same thing. Took me a second to figure out what the hell I was doing wrong.
Thanks!
Wish I could say it only took me a second! But thanks, everyone; it snaps right in now. Would've been nice if the instructions had mentioned them.

It interesting you mentioned this, here is my Docking story. I had got my Prime from a BB store that was 75 miles from my home one week but they didn't have the Dock at that time. When the Dock came available at this BB I drove back and purchased the Dock. I had my Prime with me in my Car and I decided I would try the Dock before I left to go back home. Well I sat in the Car read the little insert that came with the Dock and tired and tired to get the Prime to go into the Dock but it wouldn't go. I looked and saw the "black inserts" on my Prime where the Dock went and though I thought they should be removed I couldn't get them out easily so I then thought well maybe they should stay in place and somehow they just "folded in and out" as needed. So not wanting to screw up my Prime I go back into BB with Dock and Prime go to Geek Squad feeling DUMB than I had to do this and ask them how this worked? Well they have 5 guys look at it and apparently I must have been the 1st person to get a Dock for a Prime at this BB because they had NO CLUE if the inserts should be removed. After about 10 minutes of this I told them I have a XDA account let me log on to your WiFi and let me ask at the forum about this problem. I do that after about a minute I get answer about needing to remove the inserts. They then grab a tool and remove them and the Prime pops right in place. Moral of the story: XDA knows more than "Geek Squad"
