Vote up means the post goes to the start of the thread and vote down makes it go towards the end of the thread?

No I dont like it. If people downvote a post enough it will kick it out of the system and they cant see it.
While this may be nice for noob posts or a crappy post, it takes awhile for people to downgrade it enough to make it disappear as opposed to just having one of us delete it. Also, if people want to be dicks to a particular person or dev and make their OP disappear... it can be easily abused.

yea i didnt like it when it started in another forum i was in. i know the thank button here means a lot but could we change it to thumbs up and change the thank meter to a thumbs up meter? a lot of times i see a good post, but it doesnt make sense to hit the thank button because i just want to give it props.
+1 and thanks are different meaning.

If this is the intended usage, I am extremely concerned.
I would like it as a quick guide for how useful a post is; lets say someone says to do an adb command that will hardbrick your phone, but there's 100:1 downvote:upvote ratio, no one is going to use the command. Conversely, it could get rid of a lot of junk posts such as "yea do what that guy said". This would be very beneficial to the community (I imagine).
However if it was used for censorship reasons, people would not only abuse it, but the flow and integrity of a thread would be at jeopardy. Until clever bot reaches 100% of human intelligence, and XDA is ran by cleverbot, no algorithm should be used to determine the worth of a post. Moderators do that. Computers don't. </rant>

To accomplish the same idea of ranking posts, could there be an option added to switch between chronologically sorting posts and having ones with a lot of thanks showing up first so that the useful posts can be quickly accessed instead having to go through hundreds of pages of useless posts. That way it would still be up to the mods to remove bad posts, but would potentially cut down on time spent seeing if someone else has had the issue you are experiencing and cut right to the answers so maybe useless posts will decrease, or at the very least you can jump to posts marked useful by the other members.
Just an idea, not sure if it could even be implemented. Just something that I have been thinking about for a while.

took the words right out of my mouth lol.
I remember when I first bought this phone, being incredibly frustrated due to the fact I spend $$$ on it and it wouldn't/couldn't do all the things that other similar units could do. I found this site through Howard's Forums and I cannot say in words how much I appreciate what DCD/GC14/many others have done to make this phone into something that's just about a laptop replacement.
Please PLEASE let's not SCREW IT UP - these folks obviously spend a TON of time doing this with no rewards expected - the LEAST we can freakin do is to show them a little of respect and thanks for their hard work! Well said Kflip....

its not poor timing, its good and needed timing. and this is in no way "attacking" anybody. i could care less about specific issues, but everyone is gunna be pretty upset when they log on to XDA to ask a question and find that their go-to guy(s) have left because people care more about taking credit and arguing than getting their phones working.

Sure, I've been both helpful and a ****. I've also spent an inordinate amount of time on here today...
But...bully? Really? I've always known the General sections to be full of idiots around release time but you take the cake buddy. I might have played police a few times but at least I did it with a grin on my face. It's just a message board, lighten up. The phone isn't out yet officially, everyone is all wound up with excitement and the amount of dumb threads and questions is through the roof...if you can't take it with a grain of salt I'm not entirely sure how you cope on the internet.
I think you need to take a chill pill, or a bottle thereof.
But, in the name of fairness I'll say that I also have jumped down a couple throats tonight...acted absurdly...called a couple names. But it was all in the name of fun.
I suppose now you want to fight about it. Well, I'll tell you right now my schedule is pretty busy when I'm not on here but I do have a window open between 5pm and 7:30pm tomorrow. I'm in the northeast US, I can't drive far given my schedule but I'll meet you half way. Loser pays for ice cream seems fair.

So far I love the size.it feels sleek!!!
The screen is gorgeous!!! I love the brightness and clarity.
Power button is supper sensitive. So us the touch screen.
The build quality is very good. Some very tiny light leakage. But very sturdy design.
The camera still sucks in low light.
Battery I can't comment on just yet.
Shutter button is very small and not big like pictures make it out to be.
Heck once you have it in your hand you will be impressed.
Also the vibrate is great.
I'll update when I have more time with it.
I am very happy with it so far.

At first I read this and agreed 100%. Then as I gave it more thought I realized that would be like a teacher thanking their student for doing their homework or you thanking your mechanic for fixing your car...that's what they are supposed to do...legally required to do (lets not start that whole 'GPL wiggle room' meme again)...and they did it late.
I'm glad they did, I'm not sure if the facebook assault had anything to do with it, but I'm not sure they deserve a thank you for doing what they are required to do.

Apparently you don't know what 'Source' is...
This doesn't mean they have an update for you to download, it means that they released a copy of their kernel.
They only release the source because they are required too not because we asked them. If that was the case well you know the story.

The simple fact is, they didn't have to do anything. Do you honestly believe we have rights as consumers? I mean really? Do I feel I owed them a thank you?, no. Is it a decent thing to do after the fact?,yes. They gave it to us sooner rather then later, or even at all for that matter. Human decentcy is a funny thing lately in this country, but whatever.

Back down there sparky...I believe I phrased my reply to indicate that I was indeed on the fence with the idea. I'm not laboring over my decision but I want to give it thought. The kernel source is subject to the rules of the GPL. They paid nothing for it and only have to abide by the rules of the license. One of those rules is that the source code must be made available (within a certain amount of time? I keep hearing 30 days but I'm not so sure).
I guess I just used poor analogies. You don't thank someone for not robbing your house...do you?
That said, in the name of fairness (and human decency...towards a corporation that has already demonstrated a desire to screw us as much as we will allow?) I'm still considering my stance.

I appreciate all the work that is done here, and I'm sorry that I cant contribute to that work. I wasn't calling out everybody here, most people didnt hit their page, but those of us that did, I felt a simple thanks would be good in the long term future. When I first read the post I didn't read all the words like I said. I missed the part about the source code.
People just aren't as appreciative as they used to be. Thats what I think mostly America has become. I do get enough thanks for what I do and thats why I keep doing it. I know people like it even though they don't always show it.
I actually talked to HTC this morning and the first words out of my mouth were that I love their phones and what they do.

That's pretty compelling...in the short run. In the long run I would hope that you are proven correct and it's certainly worth a shot. If they don't learn from this, well, we can always attack them again.
I think I just might give them a thanks. All of that positive PR would surely help convince them to do the same in the future.
Well I stopped by their Facebook to say thanks as soon as they posted it. I hit them up in a polite way every day asking for it, so I felt that I wanted to thank them for doing it in a timely matter. Other companies and phones take much longer. Now, if I still had my OG EVO, I would not have thanked them for releasing today. I mean when did the GB update for the OG EVO come out? And they are just releasing it today? This is my opinion, not that anyone asked for it.

time for some change here on XDA

Let's clean this up a bit, shall we?
I get the impression sometimes that we (speaking about everybody here in the 3D forums recently) make this place sort of "unfriendly" with sarcasm and troll posts, rudeness when people post in the wrong section, create duplicate threads, so on and so forth...
First of all, I will say that I am fully aware of my own contribution to this, lol. BUT... i was thinking earlier about when I started out over on SDX and how friendly and eager people were to help me when I was new to the android/Linux scene (although I still had somewhat of a basic understanding of it because of my knowledge of windows, Linux and especially android was a new world to me and much of the knowledge I have picked up since then was simply because people were so willing to offer help and their own knowledge - regardless of "noob" questions (when I simply could have used a search button).
Yeah, for whatever reason you just want to punch people through the computer sometimes when they post in the wrong section or make "hAlp my phonez is teh broken" threads that can easily be fixed with some searching around. But I think we should try to be a little bit more of a friendly and tolerant (and therefore tolerable... ironically) of the things that go on around here.
Anyways, just some dumb ass rant post. But I thought I would share this thought because I feel the action of it could be a positive thing around here.
oouuut.
So, I will be nicer to people. Let's all try this, shall we?

In the Netherlands we always say: there no such thing as a stupid question but only stupid answers.
You hit the nail right ok the head. I joined
XDA almost a year ago and everyone was very helpful. I learned a lot. Now its a lot of people b***ing about stupid things like a devs work or a question they they have decided is "dumb".
Sent from my Evo 3D on viperROM
If I've helped you in any way... hit the "Thanks" button.
I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that since there's been a flood of Android phones hitting the market over the last year and a half or so, there's also a flood of people who come with it. They buy a new Android device, hear about 'rooting' and jump on here. Not everyone knows the meaning of respect, and they expect things to just be handed to them. There's definitely more idiots on here than before, but also just more people overall. No matter where you go, the more people around, the more idiots there will be. It's unfortunate indeed.
I try to be helpful, but it's definitely aggravating when someone just flat out doesn't read a damn thing, and asks a question that's clearly typed in the OP. When I joined, I didn't know ANYTHING about rooting, ROMs, etc. but I read a few things and learned.
There are a few forums that I use that have a n00b section with zero intolerance for the replies to questions in said sub-forum, maybe that would be nice, then we can segregate the n00bs and flame more well-known users for asking stupid things. Lol

I used to get on here several times a day, reading these forums, but it took me a long time to actually register because the few immature people that start a fight in the thread made it look irritating. Like whoever posted in the recent ICS thread about how the OP was information from another thread, even though the OP was several pages long.
Who cares? It's something else to read. That's why most of us are here, for some form of entertainment.
n00bs != newbies
Newbies don't know things and after TRYING to figure it out themselves, they have ended up, seeking answers for uncommon situations. This is OK.
n00bs, on the other hand, don't know ****, they don't give a crap about learning and expecting from others to give all the answers on a gold plate without moving a finger on their foot. This is not OK.
The sooner pseudomoralistic idiots realize this, the sooner will be this place be as it used to be before. If not, I'll continue to troll n00bs for my own amusement and you can kiss my shiny ass.
'Nuff said.
Every time I see someone say "cool story bro" I add them to my ignore list. Just added another..
That said XDA has gone steadily down hill. I remember when I first came here I was actually afraid to post. Now XDA is so addicted to member counts that they let just about anything go. Had a guy yesterday asking how to hack Amazon this is the crowd being attracted now. Its a shame and like many others i'm looking for the next XDA. Problems is the asses will just following. BTW I have no idea what the OP posted because he is already on my ignore list as it the poster below him now.

Yes, the "an answer is easily found by a very fast google search but I'm too lazy to do it or just expect you tell me" crowd is the problem I agree. Even if they are not the majority, when I see a new thread or question that seems like an easy find, I get really mad because I had to take the time to learn and search on my own. I've been on here since 2006 and I guess because of all the new androids out there you get people who are not technologically inclined trying to do technicological things.

However, I agree it has gotten out of control, and the mods are unwilling or unable to do anything about the newbs or the a%*holes that are attacking devs when they know nothing about any of this development stuff.

/pulls out soap box and stands on it
first off you wouldnt believe the amount of buttholes and douchebags mods put up with on a daily basis. most often we only get called in when there is a problem, so everyone wants to talk about how things have changed and how it sucks putting up with the idiots. put on mod glasses, i would 75% of the people on here, instead of just reporting a troll or a n00b posting in the wrong spot or a spammer, they in turn flame, troll, spam the person that just needs reporting. so that means, we then have to clean everything back up, figure out who to get rid of and sort the whole situation. its not fun. if you want to see things change, be the change. report posts, dont flame the idiots, dont feed the trolls, just move on with your day. we arent afraid to boot people, we arent about "registration numbers", we are about supporting developers. but we cant be in every thread at once or all the time. if you see something out of place, report it, everyone has that ability. but most of us just return the favor of flaming people.
i became a mod, because i believed that a difference could be made. i reported posts, before i was a mod, i was helpful to people, i tried to teach n00bs the correct way of doing things instead of treating them like trash. yes there is an over abundance of users now due to the influx of android devices, most of the new users dont know anything, and they wont ever learn anything if we all are douchebags to them.
if XDA is becoming something that it wasnt in the past, its because we as a user base are allowing it to be so. be a respectful user, help people out, if someone is doing something they arent supposed to report them. serisously, how are we supposed to know whats going on if we arent notified?
/steps off soap box
I think a large problem too is it really does feel like the mods play favorites. I don't want to bring up the whole Chad.Goodman thing, and how he was reported and pulled in a matter of hours, yet, when he reported other non-GPL complying dev's nothing was done to them. Or my own situation, having important threads detailing hostile actions from one particular user being deleted without any reply or communication from a mod as to why. That user having no repercussion for his actions.. It's really feels that it's not an equal ground forum a lot of the time.

i agree that it may feel like that sometimes, and sometimes mods need to do a better job in communicating. users will not however see everything that goes on behind the scenes. if we infract someone we dont broadcast it, its really no one else's business if i infract you, thats why other users cant see other peoples infractions. if you dont like the way a mod handled something, ask him (or her) how/why they did what they did. dont be hostile about it, just pose a question. i know we are more than willing to talk to users about their issues, and come to the best possible resolve.

"Downloading", Really?!

Maybe I'm just getting grumpy in my old age, but do we really need to post, "downloading", every time a new ROM version is released? It's hard enough to get through threads that are multiple pages, without having to sift through the, "downloading", pollution. It serves no purpose. You may as well tell everybody what you had for breakfast, while you're at it. How about we all make a New Year's resolution to cut down on frivolous posts? Rant over, thanks for listening, carry on.

I'm skipping breakfast and going straight to lunch. I'm working from home today and my wife prepared good old franks n' beans. Yum yum........ LMFAO!!
Anyway, what's your favorite lp rom so far? I keep trying them and going back to beans stock with skydragon kernel and xposed. The bugs and lack of customization (mostly bugs) keep sending me back.
Always appreciate your input.
Relax and have a good one!

Id rather see a post saying "downloading" then a thread created saying "Downloading really?"

At least it's in it's own thread, and not polluting someone else's. See, the thing is, from the title, you probably could get an idea what this thread is about, and decide if you want to read it or not, but if you're trying to get information on a ROM, 100 posts that say, "downloading", are no help whatsoever, but hey, thanks for sharing.

Using Bliss Pop. The performance of Lollipop goes a long way to overcome the lack of customization. I see CM12 has gotten the camcorder fixed, so I'm sure the other ROMs will have it shortly.
I get tired of dimwits that don't read the OP, ask the same question over and over again, and have entitlement issues.
I was on carbonROM on my n4 and literally every other post was "does this have pie?"

Again, it is it's own topic, so NO, it's not. Pay attention, please.
How do I install this?
Does MMS work? (read OP)
Will this work on VS985? (read OP)
Is this lollipop? (read OP)
When will this be updated?
Can you do something special for me?
I've been on XDA for years, and its amazing the amount of crap that people put in development threads now.... Its been getting worse and worse over the years....
I hope everyone realizes, that this thread is half serious, half tongue in cheek, so don't get all butt hurt.

I used to, until I realized that if they won't read what has already been posted, they probably won't read what I post in response, so I don't.
My favorites are the ones that post a question in the middle of the night, and then three hours later, start to complain that no one has answered their post. Those I DO respond to.
A close second are those that are TOO LAZY to use simple punctuation and capitalization of their sentences when they ask for help. Apparently they feel that even though we are doing them a favor in helping them, we should also have to figure out what their mumbling are, because they are TOO LAZY to spend a few extra seconds to be clear. Needless to say, such individuals seem to have greater difficulty with their devices than the rest of us; I wonder why that is ...

Sometimes I post questions at 2am. And I don't get mad...normal people are asleep. Lol. If its a pressing issue, I google If its somewhat severe, I do a restore. I backup before everything. Everything else can wait. WHY CANT PEOPLE JUST WAIT. I'm currently waiting. I want a 100% working aosp. And it doesn't exist yet. Most devs aren't worried about kk now. Its all l.p. which I love. But it's so buggy. So I wait. I'll ask maybe once a week or so "what's the bugs in the newest build" and I wait...and data is still iffy? Okay. I'll wait.

Just had one in the LG G3 forums:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/help/usb-internet-mode-verizon-t2969583
Threads like this are exactly the reason I tend to avoid speaking up at all in any of these forums. They tend to be a full of cliques where you're either part of the "in" crowd of "smart" or "experienced" people or just another stupid noob who either doesn't know how to read or are "too lazy" to search. How about you guys either just answer the questions or keep your smart mouths shut. There's no need to belittle or insult someone just because they're not as "smart" as you are. I've had my say, so I'll go back to quietly perusing the forums....
