This app list is clutch. I personally don't use my amaze for heavy gaming since the phone on standby is a battery killer, but I do enjoy games of Elemental and Chuchu Rocket from time to time.

Have you tried the Energy ROM? My phone lasted over 24 hrs with minimal to moderate use.

For playing video files, RockPlayer is a must have. U wont find a video player thats better, especially in terms of supported video types. It will play almost any video type u throw at it, even .avi and .mkv files, which most android video players don't support.

Not installing to much because I will be doing some new ROMs soon.

To those posting app suggestions. Thank you very much for sharing your best finds.
It would be very helpful however if you would include a very brief description of what they do. For example Jefit and Intonow, among others, mean nothing to me. I know I can look them up, but it would save a lot of people a lot of time looking up apps it turns out they don't have any use for.
Thanks again for all the cool new apps. My phone is burning up from the downloads.

Really? If you knew me you'd know that I'm anything but lazy. There are more than 50 apps listed (so far). The OP took the time to include a couple of words to tell what the apps are for. HE wasn't lazy. It was just a suggestion. One that I suspect everyone who reads this thread would also appreciate. I DO appreciate your list of apps, just trying to make it better for all.

C'mon guys. Marleyfan's got a point. I'll edit mine...
For the record... I am kinda lazy

Hanging Free - like words with friends meets hangman
IMDB - what was the name of that guy who played (character) in (movie)?
N64oid - N64 emulator
SoundHound - better than Shazam
Tim Hortons - a Canadian must have

have you ever run miui? no lie, i think its the best os out there. im more of a themer, creative, artsy kind of guy, so with customization options almost limitless in miui, it my favorite. plus its aosp, so its light on system resources and great for battery life. i miss miui so bad....

@glacierguy, I assume you're running Logmein Pro of some sort to be able to stream music / video? I've got Ignition and all my clients are using the free version...
Thanks.

Essential apps

Had my Streak since Monday after finally deciding against the HD2. I've been a winmo user for years but didn't like the idea of being stuck with 6.5 for another 18 months.
I had built up a huge selection of fave apps for my HD and was reluctant to let some of them go, so I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for everyone's essential apps for the Streak.
Having only had the "phone!" for a few days, here's a couple of apps i'm liking so far:
1. RockPlayer - play avi files and more.
2. Google Navigation - although comes shipped in UK.
3. MyPlayer - BBC iPlayer.
4. AppKiller - although this is the only task manager i have tried so far.
5. EsFileExplorer - again the only one tried so far.
6. XDA app - nice interface and faster than using the browser.
7. ColourUp - i love editing photos and this is pretty cool.
8. Google SkyMap - works brilliantly.
9. Swype - only just started using this, for me it's brilliant.
Ok, there's my keepers for now, how about yours? I've not really found any great games that fit will on the screen yet although i'm liking Winds Of Steel.
Same as yours really, but would like to add Astro file explorer - great for installing apps outside market. And if you like reading as much as i do Laputa is a awesome ebook reader with ipad style bookshelf and page turning and loads of online books.
Tried quite a few games and at the mo playing Zenonia little rpg ala zelda which is a nice enough. Game Boid is a great emulator for all those classics. Mazeoid is a free pac man game runs great on the streak.
Im experimenting with different keyboards, the dell one works great but the numpad throws off the whole symmetry. Ive tried smart keyboard which is quite nice with lots of skins, but i found it slow so went back. Any suggestions would be very welcome...
Gonna add a new one as of yesterday....kindle reader.
just bought a couple of books and woopee for some reason you can buy them at american prices. Lot cheaper than the UK store/mobipocket etc.
Oh yeah and Rockplayer...rocks...will probably be my first 'purchased' app once it get's released (I've not had a need for anything else that requires paying for yet.)
oops. forgot I don't play many games but Bonsai Blast is really addictive and fits the screen great.

Great, was looking for a decent ebook reader for the ebooks i already have, I also think the numeric keypad is a dumb thing - not thought about as it forces you to hold the streak lob-sided to type, as you, still looking for a decent alternative.

Yep, kindle reader looks lovely, but can't get it to work with the ebooks i "bought" from other sources. Will give the bonsai blast a try. Cheers.

Nice find, buy them cheap while you can
Gave Bonsai Blast a go and i agree looks great and a pretty fun and adictive thanks.
Kindle looks good but like Guest69 i have a collection of ebooks i need to be able to import, maybe this will be possible later...
Also found a few good widgets. Htc smooth calendar (other one was buggy) looks great, matching the dell theme better then the default and shows 3 appointments. VolumeWidget is on my home screen, gives you 3 buttons for preset volume profiles.
Finally the Zedge app is like the app store of ringtones, has search, preview and install functions. Theres also a wallpaper section, but i havent tried it as i have made my own seamless sets like the o2 wallpapers (cut up and resized some high res dual monitor wallpapers) ill post some here when i get a minute.
My favorite book reader is aldiko, and it has limited support for importing books as well as long as they are epub format.
Hi all,
Well I've had my Streak now for a little over 3 weeks and have now flashed my first custom Rom which comes Rooted and with Superuser permissions plus has allowed me to remove from the Rom the apps i had no need for.
So here are my installed apps in no particular order.
Astro File Manager: can be used to install apps that come as apk's as opposed to from the market
Barcode Scanner: easy way to install apps form QR codes or just reading Bar codes
3G Watchdog: Monitors your data use over 3G you can set your allowance and it will monitor and alert you
Live Calender: Will bring up upcoming Appointments on your Home screen
F1 Pocket 2010: all you need to stay up to date with F1
Moto GP Pocket 2010: all you need to stay up to date with Moto GP
iSyncr for PC: Easy transfer and sync of iTunes to your Streak
Google Sky Map: Map of the Stars and Planets
Engadget: Widget with scrolling updates
SystemPanelLite Task Manager:Shows you CPU and Memory use
myPlayer: BBC iPlayer
ShootMe: Screen Shots for Rooted devices
Speedtest.net Speed Test
Rock Player: Plays DivX Avi and many other formats in great quality.
Co Pilot Live: Sat Nav with POI'S and Speed Cameras
Gentle Alarm: Great Multiple Alarm app with some unique nice features
Seven Push E-Mail: Real time Push E-Mail with full folder support
Cloud List:Great: shopping or other list app also on line lists that can be shared with others
Tapatalk Pro: handy tool for posting on Forums
TVCatchup Mobile Live TV Streaming with lots of UK channels
Fring: Skype and IM chat app includes Skype Video chat
Superuser Permissions: allows rooted apps permission
Boot Explorer: File explorer and more for Rooted devices
Root Booter: Easy Normal, Recovery or Bootloader Reboot options
Boot Manager: Control over various options and apps on your device
Swype: simply the best keyboard and typing experience ever IMHO
I should mention although System Panel Lite is a task manager that's not what I'm using it for as it also shows CPU and Memory use along with all your Active applications and Inactive cached applications. Personally I'm just not using a task killer or killing any apps at all.
Wow having now made this list i can't believe just how many apps i have installed so far just as well the Streak comes with 2GB for installing them on.
Marc
is there a good Weather app out there
Is there an android application for windows live mail? I haven't found one.

@ Dogman, Mate whats the name of the Barcode reader you use thanks
Hi lufc
It's called Barcode Scanner and it works better then any I've ever used before literally as soon as you frame the QR code it identifies it and gives gives you the option to open the browser which actually opens the download store with the app ready to just hit for download. It still amazes me very time i use it to download a new app just how fast and simple it makes the whole procedure.

wifinder- neat little app
barcode scanner
osmtracker- useful for updating openstreetmap or gps logging
Vespucci - for ondevice osm editing
sportypal - used it in winmo, not as good as runsat though, maybe hollywoof will write an android runsat app one day.
floating image - ultra cool way of showing pictures
layar - more for showing off
laputa
Mytracks - works with runsaturday.com (via email)
Imeasy -fbchat
myplayer

root explorer
goggles
bonsai blast
and a couple of spongebob games for my kids
My FAVORITE app is Swype. A month ago they were letting people download the app again and I got it for my Nexus One .. I loved it because for some reason I was having a horrible time typing .. When I first got my Streak I typed on it for about 15 minutes and then downloaded Swype again and that is ALL I ever use. I made it the default program for any text and you can always type letter by letter if you are having problems with a certain word. On YouTube there are several GREAT instructional videos on swyping from the maker. I am pretty sure I am getting faster swyping than I was typing on my iphone.
Double post...
Thanks for the barcode scanner tip Marc, its real fast and accurate definitely a keeper.
ROFL @ "XDA_devs is rapidly becoming the McDs of the winmo world, sadly full of rude chavs demanding crap immediately.. "
As for swype, I gave it a try but I wasnt impressed, guess its a preference thing but I can type fast as hell in landscape with a normal kb so long as it can keep up. I found with swype it takes much more finger movement to type each word and you have to look at what you are doing more, not to mention smearing crap all over the screen...
Im still searching for a good alternative to dells stock kb, tried everything in the market with mixed results, but I think I'll just wait till the froyo update and try the ported htc multitouch kb.
@Cypher84
If you mess around with the settings for Swype you can change how long the trace shows for and the same for word prediction i have reduced the time for both which i have found has made the world of difference. Also now Swype has learnt most of my most commonly typed words I'm finding it incredibly fast and accurate and also it's quite forgiving if your not totally accurate. Also for the suggested word to be put in you just start the next word so now after just a short while using Swype it defiantly is my by far preferred method of text input. But like anything just because it's best for me doesn't mean it has to be for everyone else.

I had the same problem but you just need to do this
After you have installed and enabled swype
Open a text input box (what I do is open up the browser, go to google and then hold my finger down in the google search box)
Hold your finger down in this box until a menu appears "Input method"
select Input Method and then it should give you an option of Swype or Android Keyboard, select swype and now it will use that as default
Hope this helps
Cheers

you know all those lovely books you grabbed in laputa? ** imagine reading them in either landscape or portrait with whatever layout you want. that's the start, then imagine sticking it in night mode and setting what colour you want the text to be. then decide you really want the backlight much darker than either Dell and lapses will let you go. slide your finger down the left edge if the screen.. genius!
Flick page left turns it, no fuss, no scrabbling around in the bottom corner trying to Flick the page.change the page animation speed, change pretty much everything..
**copy any epub book to /sdcard/ebooks/import and enjoy them in comfort

The apps I can't do without, and to be frank they've saved the streak for me
GOOGLE LISTEN automated download of subscriptions just add to your queue and listen, need to spend time finding good stuff to listen to but there's plenty out there. This week in google is always god for a laugh
ROCK PLAYER watching films on the streak is a must, currently the only app that doesn't need mass conversion of your film library
SWYPE keyboard is a must the stock keyboard was/is terrible, I spent ages correcting errors now I have a keyboard that I can tap or swype and get good results.
ENGADGET reads a dream on the streak
NEWS PRO THOMPSON REUTERS all types of news under one roof
That's it I'm afraid i expected more from such an open platform. I could do more with a jailbroken iphone than with android 1.6. I hope that will change soon.
Ones to watch

I have just stumbled across this app that plays AVI files and as their are not many out their that do that i thought i put the link up
http://www.appbrain.com/app/sns.arcMedia.playerInterface.arm6
PS i havent tried it yet so if someone does please share it with us
interesting, the 1.6 firmware photo&video is by arcsoft media ...
obviously a coincidence of naming..
as this is based on FFMpeg I'd imagine it will be able to handle quite a few codecs eventually.
however looks like this specific version is compiled for arm6 processors, (the appbrain link name suggests it) so maybe a v7 version would be a bit better.
Barcode Scanner
One of those apps i would gladly pay for
http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/shopping/barcode-scanner_clh.html
You will notice on the link page a barcode for installing barcode scanner, but considering you haven't downloaded or installed it yet, i would like to see how anyone would take advantage of it

In addition to many of those mentioned before, here are some apps I've used and found useful on the Streak:
ACT 1 Video Player - Amazon's Unbox player (for Video on Demand) recognizes the Streak as a portable device and will transfer purchased movies/TV shows to the Streak as WMV's. Plays them well, and bookmarking functionality is useful. Free trial available.
AirReg - Interesting for those looking for info on the plane they're about to get on.
Galcon - Fun game ($)
GPSTest - Interesting while sitting on planes (especially in a window seat).
Jewels - Bejewelled style game

Quick question, what USB mode is your Streak in when transfer video files
from Amazon. I havnt got it to work yet?
Thanks!
psx4droid: bit limited on what works, but WRC Arcade version and Colin McRae Rally 2.0 (and i presume 1.0) work!!
Kindle is excellent on the Streak.
Don't understand why people aren't using the built in video player? Having said that, I'm using DVD conversions I did for my old X1 and that was a swine to convert for. h264 mpeg I think?
Copilot is superb, google maps with streetview and traffic layer is a godsend.
And, for anyone who has an OBDII compliant car, "Torque" is a great bit of software. You get a bluetooth OBDII adapter from ebay for around 25 quid and now you have diagnostics (including reading and clearing fault codes) for your car!! £2? The guy could charge £10 and it'd be well worth it!!
Being a photographer, "Photo Tools" is a very handy application
And for music, through bluetooth in my car, Mort Player is great - especially if you add the widget. It even responds to the steering wheel controls for next and previous track!

I launched Amazon Unbox player, connected the Streak, and selected Media files. After a minute or so, I was able to see the Streak, after refreshing the devices in Unbox. Good luck!!
Found a good clock widget for the Streak, the surround looks similar to the standard streak icon surrounds so it matches them pretty good.http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-davidgoemans-simpleclockwidget-zAtq.aspx
Weather forecast widget, only used this for a coupls of days, seems pretty accurate, battery use was good with 3% over 8 hrs (set to update every 6)

I have tested and it does work over wifi with the Streak. Still in alpha but it does have promise.
I downloaded Skype but for some reason it just freezes the streak. Im sure its skype. I know skype haven't releashed a Dell Streak Version. I installed system tools and my memory has gone upto 93%. even though I use task manager and also have 1.5gb free on internal.
I had to switch the screen off a few times to get the screen to respond to my touches sometimes had to restart (i've tried screen calibration) and when i finally got it to work went into settings --> application --> stopped skype and it works fine ... strange.. anyone else having the same problems?
Thanks

I think these are only available to Nokia Phones. Hopefully, they make them available to all WP7 phones, because they're really awesome.
Why does everyone want Nokia Drive?!!!!!!
I think Bing Maps is awesome.. what is it missing?
I use WPCentral & WMPoweruser a lot. Also mehdoh for twitter. Other than that I use a lot of photo apps & Xbox live games, especially Splinter Cell. Also use the people hub for most of my Facebook & some twitter. Though I guess the people hub is baked in & not necessarily an app .

[List] Must have Apps for 8.9"

I thought I'd make this list of Apps that i find very usefull on my tab.
Most of them are optimized for tablet resolution. I'm looking forward to seeing your suggestions to add them to the list.
I will try to go off the beaten path a little, and not suggest the apps everyone knows about anyhow
ASUS Supernote (Free)
This is the notetaking app that comes with the transformer...and its friggin awesome! You can't get it in the market so you have to sideload it. So far i have found no notetaking app that works as well as this one does!
ComicRack (Free/5,99€)
So you like to read comics? This is in my eyes the best comicreader hands down!
It really shines if you use it in combination with the comicrack program for pc. You can sync your libraries, read status, and lots of other stuff. The paid version offers wifi sync but the free version works perfectly fine! The dev is very supportive and open to suggestions. If you like comics, check this out!
Feedly (Free)
Great RSS reader. Tight integration with GoogleReader. A joy to look at.
BubbleUPNP (Free/3,49€)
This is my UPNP player of choice. I have a homeserver running XBMC providing all my TVshows and Movies and bubbleUPNP does a great job without a lot of hassle streaming them to the tab. The free version works great aswell!
Mantano Reader (Free/3,99€)
After trying a lot of e-readers I finally settled with this one. It has a nice interface, simple controls and quite a bit of customizability. Plus it supports epud and pdf formats, incase you get your books from "somewhere else"
Facedroid (1,25€)
My facebook app of choice for the tablet. Still being actively developed with very nice devs. Any Bugs? Write them and it will probably be fixed tomorrow!
Total Commander (Free)
Maybe you know this from Windows. Its a very advanced and powerfull file manager and there is a beta version for android! Pretty awesome app, with two pane view which makes copying and moving stuff about pretty easy! Not in the market, must be sideloaded but can be downloaded directly at the developers site.
Will post some more when I get the time.
Hope you find something usefull here.
Might I add
Dolphin browser
Droid TV
Stumble Upon
Currents
NodeBeat
Ted Air
Floating Image
Di radio, Jazz radio
I can haz tablet (sorry
PewPew2, Osmos, Where's my water, Reckless Racing HD, World of Goo, Reflexions
Redditmag, baconreader
Voodoo Screen tuning
Setcpu, voltage control
Fast reboot pro

Pulse
I really enjoy Pulse New, its a nice way to bring a lot of news feeds together in one place

Go!Chat for Facebook
I didnt really used to talk to that much people on fb that much via messaging on a regular basis but i recently started talking to someone and wanted to receive notifications so long story short
Facebook app apparently doesn't give messaging notifications
Facebook messenger worked great the day I downloaded it then stopped the next day I kept checking to see if it was getting killed but wasn't just didn't wanna give notifications (why Facebook whhhy!)
Friendcaster is bad at any notifications all together so this was just 1 of them if I wanted to get proper notifications I'd need the pro version
Friendcaster Chat could only message people who were online and by online I mean on a computer if there on a phone won't work
this was the only 1 I've tried that worked

One Browser - a very nice browser indeed with good easy-to-use features, best I have tried yet and free!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...1bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS50ZW5jZW50LmliaWJvLm10dCJd
Cerberus anti-theft - yes it is paid app but worth it as the lifetime license covers 5 devices for less than £3 and it offers functions not available with Lookout Antivirus and similar apps - highly recommended.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...51bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5sc2Ryb2lkLmNlcmJlcnVzIl0.
Astro File Manager - excellent file manager with built in tools like App Backup, Task Killer, integration with cloud storage like Dropbox and much more - well worth the adverts to get a great app for free!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5tZXRhZ28uYXN0cm8iXQ..
Moon+ reader - superb book reader for .epub files and much more, currently not on Play store due to dirty tactics by another dev with an ebook app...more details on his site, download link below. If you can I would recommend paying for this one to get rid of the ads, well worth it and there is constant dev support but the free one works great too )
http://www.moondownload.com/download.html
TTS - IVONA Amy (GB English) voice beta and TTS HQ- both currently free while in Beta and working great, especially in combination with Moon+ Reader Pro Also works with GMaps and several more voices/languages are available free too.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...ult#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5pdm9uYS50dHMiXQ..
and
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...5pdm9uYS50dHMudm9pY2ViZXRhLmVuZy5nYnIuYW15Il0.
RAC Traffic - UK only RAC Traffic shows the nearest traffic problem to you, or by region via a Google map, has been accurate and useful so far in 4 weeks of use - and it's free!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...ult#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsInJhY1RyYXZlbC5hcHAiXQ..
Met Office Weather Application - UK only Sick of your weather wiget giving you incorrect info? If you live in the UK then this is the best weather app around! Some text is very small on the Y but you get all the weather warnings, radar maps etc and it's accurate...most of the time.

Free Games I like...
Jewels - The classic match-3 game - now with prizes through "pocketchange" system (items for other games)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsIm9yZy5taGdhbWVzLmpld2VscyJd
Jewels Legend - A more elaborate jewels game with over 300 levels and powerups etc
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wsMSwxLDEwOSwiY29tLmdhbWUuSmV3ZWxzTGVnZW5kIl0.
Jewels Star - More than 350 levels of sparkly gem matching goodness...
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...1bGwsMSwxLDEwMiwiY29tLmdhbWUuSmV3ZWxzU3RhciJd
Furries - This is just an addictive little physics game where you have to catapult cute "furries" as far as you can...use trampolines and planes to get further but avoid the barrels! Note: If you block the ads this game will crash. To get to the ingame Shop wait for the advert to load and then carefully tap and scroll the page up (tap at the edge not on the ad!) - it only scrolls a tiny bit but when you can see the white line at the bottom of the screen you are good ) Tap the white line and you will get to the shop - damn the small screen on the Y lol

I doubt because this phone couldn't even run zeonia 4 (at least not that I know of) and the trend with devs is to improve graphics making it even less likely they completely forget about armv6 processors and QVGA screens
