[Q] 2.17 Flashing Issues - HTC EVO 3D

I'm on my EVO 3D rooted with 2.17 stock ROM.
I have the recovery as twrp 1.0.3 but i cant install anything. it'll say trying to install and then it wont have any messages and it goes back to the main home screen. Any help?
(Also what ROMs, Mods, and Kernels work with 2.17?)

Also any rom you prefer people will say a billion things are best bad ass and so on lol Not True. It's what you want and prefer... Nothing is top of line.. You will have to play around and see what you want as a daily rom Any rom will work depends on what you are looking for you want battery life stay stockish.. You want speed and don't care for excellent battery life try any overclocked kernel and rom.. It really boils down to what you want and prefer...

wait.... you ALREADY have 2.17 or youre trying to flash that so it can install bc you have a lesser version?
in order to flash the new 2.17 RUU stock rom you have to use the stock recovery ....

I can't find TWRP version 2.0.1. I found TWRP 1.1.1 and flashed it and the problem is that any zip i flash won't last. For example, I just tried flashing the EVO 3D Google Talk w/Voice and Video.zip and i did not work.

then most likely your recovery is not working properly... if youre rooted and unlocked then your given permissions to write to the boot partition and the recovery is given permission to write to the system and data partitions... try using CWM 4.0.1.4 for the evo 3d or also known as the shooter....

[Q] Brand New EVO 3D with 1.40 boot! Root help please?

Ok, I have been reading all day and have noticed alot of new Evo 3d's being sold at sprint stores with the 1.40 h-boot. I noticed because I was one of the lucky ones to get one today!
There is alot of information on this forum, almost to a fault, because most of it is for 1.50 h-boot phones. I am pretty new to rooting, so be gentle.
So, here is what I would like to accomplish with my root.
My confusion lies it the area of recovery. I have read a few guides on here and this one seems to be the one I keep coming back to. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1196131&highlight=guide
I know I need to do Revolutionary S-OFF & Recovery tool. Part of this process involves downloading and installing Clockwork Mod Recovery (CMR).
Then the guide tells me to install another recovery, Team Win custom recovery Project (TWRP) + Eng H-boot.
Now, the recovery I would like to use is 4ext Recovery Touch v1.0.0.5. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1560279
So, am I flashing 3 different recovery's? Or, do I just flash the 4ext instead of the CMR/TWRP?
My endgame is to flash MeanROM which is a 2.17.651.5 base firmware. But, my phone has a 2.3.3 firmware on it (kernel 2.6.35.10, build# 1.13.651.7), so I will have to upgrade my firmware to the newer version, correct?
Any help or steps to get me started would be awesome!
TIA
Root that bad boy with unrevoked just Google search it.

Thanks...
I won't have a prob doing the root, steps seem easy for the actual root process... via revolutionary.
My issue is the recovery I want to use and the steps to get the rom I want going.
Recovery is simple just download twrp or ext4 the info is in the threads bro over by dev section

You may have to use cwm or TWRP temporarily in order to flash SuperUser to gain root access. The 4ext updater app will flash 4ext for you, I just can't remember if it requires su access but I believe it does. Switching recoveries is easy pezy... Don't sweat it man.
And yes you will want to update tour firmware via BOOTLOADER. Freeza has an all in one firmware update package that works nice.

CWM 4.0 works like a champ
Have a look at Closeone's downgrade tool thread , Post #3 specifically, and start at step 23 since you have Hboot 1.40 & already have fw 1.13.651.7. At the end of it ate some additional resources for 2.17 rooted Roms & the radio update.
Basically run revolutionary for s-off, install any recovery (4ext or cwm 4.0.1.4 recommended), run xhausx's 2.17.651.7 radio only update, format system data & cache (or superwipe), flash MeanRom.

Coolness. Thanks.
Just curious if I need to do this step 2 in that guide... STEP 2. Flash Eng Hboot, Team WIN recovery.
I'm guessing not the TWR, but what about the Eng hboot thing?
Thanks.

In that eng hboot guide you should do up to step 5 to get s-off & cwm recovery v4.0.1.4. Yes, u need HTC drivers & usb debugging enabled.
You don't need eng Hboot, Revolutionary will install a fully working hboot 1.40.0011. You can try that one out later if u need more advanced options.
After the radio update, If you want 4ext Recovery, you have to boot the OS, and install the android app which will install the actual recovery, replacing Cwm if you loaded it when asked by Revolutionary's process.

Awesome. That helps me out a ton! Thanks!
I'll be flashing here in a few, I'll keep posted on my progress.
Just did revolutionary and cwm recovery and all is good. Did a nand backup and it told me No sd-ext found. Skipping backup of sd-ext.
I'm assuming this is normal... going to flash superuser now... (peed a little)

There really isn't a need to flash Su since it's included in MeanRom (you can if you want it included in a backup).
Also see my 2.17 Based Rom Links post for the radio update before meanrom (Listed at the bottom on Closeone's 3rd post)
Ya, I did the SU so I could have a clean stock, rooted nand backup.
Everything went smooth as butter! Phone is running MeanROM and very fast. It is a clean stock rom. I'm diggin' it.
I didn't notice any beats audio menu or any way to see if it's actually there even? Is it just there and ya dont see it? I see dsp manager baked in...
Well, anyways, thanks for all the help! I'm up and running all thanks to the help here!
Peace
Thanks grim! Yes, I did the feeya all in 1 radio update from bootloader. Easy as pie!

It's there when you play music inside the HTC Music app, won't work with Bluetooth though (see recent post in MeanRom thread). Ziggy kernel (default in current meanrom) doesn't have 100% Beats even though most "Beats Features" are a part of the Rom. Chad Goodman's kernel, Anthrax RLS8 Final, has Full beats support (if you can tell the difference).

[Q] Why can't I overclock my newly rooted 3D EVO?

I've newly rooted the phone. I haven't put on a new custom ROM, but surely I should be able to overclock it with SetCPU. The highest frequency I can get is 1188 which is probably the standard clock speed.
Anyone know how to get it higher, without a custom ROM?
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D X515m using XDA
You need an OC kernel for that. And if you are S-ON you can't do that.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1495657
Follow this thread to achieve S-OFF status if your device is unbranded or vodafone branded then install a kernel like leedroid's, mine is running on 1.5ghz atm.
Edit: You can actually install kernels while S-ON, but I'd get S-OFF if I was you as you'll have trouble when ICS comes out.

You also need a kernel that supports overclocking. I prefer Anryl because in my opinion it's the most stable and the battery friendliest of them all. You can flash it with an app calld "Flash image GUI".
Can I use that kernel with the original Sense ui?
Because all I did was Roy my phone with recovery and have done nothing else.

Yes and no. The kernel has to state that it works with Sense 3.0 if you want a smooth oc kernel try Anthrax, it overclocks to 1.5ghz which should be enough, anything higher will just over heat your phone and make it unstable.

In development section there's a stockist kernel that I've been using recently that can be ocd to 1.7. Has ponury support also..

All you need is a kernal thats clocked at 1.5 you want need anymore then this any higher will result in high battery drain

Thanks for that guys, I will try out a few that say that they work with sense 3.0. I will click up to 1.5, so want battery life and no overheating.
By the way how do I get back to the original kernel if I encounter any problems?
If I just do a nandroid backup then try the kernel, then if i encounter any issues do a nandroid restore, would it being back my phone and original kernel?

and the 3rd and the best way for s-on hboot is to use 4ext recovery and enable smart flash, which will allow him to flash kernels just like S-OFFed phones

what issue are you facing ?
booting recovery from fastboot works on every phone.......and
which recovery are you using ?
I suggested you to use 4ext recovery in the above post , which you can get from www.4ext.net , download and install the free 4ext recovery updater which will install 4ext recovery in your phone...
you can't directly flash kernels from recovery if you are s-on .....
you will have to fastboot boot recovery or use 4ext recovery's smartflash feature if you don't want to use pc

do a nandroid backup with 4ext recovery , then if you want to restore to stock kernel , just restore the system and boot partition.
If you backup using different recovery, you cannot restore the backup with another recovery....
Just double checking before I take the plunge:
I take it that my current CWM Revolutionary recovery will not be good enough to backup and install a new kernel? Is that correct? And that the only way to do this is to use the new 4ext recovery instead?

Your current recovery is good and works well for both S-on and S-OFF phones..... but the only issue is S-on users can't flash kernels directly with CWM , You will either have to use PC to boot CWM recovery on your phone to flash kernels , or you can use 4ext recovery and enable its smart flash feature to flash kernels if you don't want to use PC.
But make sure 4ext supports gsm EVO 3d..
Thanks for that, I will now try that, I'm sure that 4ext works on my gsm 3d because it asked me to confirm the phone model when I first opened the app.

Can someone help me please, I'm getting really frustrated as flashing kernels etc, seems a little more complex than it did with the HTC Hero.
I am trying to flash this kernel, I have S-ON, with Sense 3 and when I use 4EXT to flash the akernel_v10.08.zip it says:
assert failed: write_raw_image ("/tmp/newboot.img", "bcot")
E:Error in /sdcard/akernel_v10.08.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
So then the instruction in the first post for Anryl Kernel says if you have S-On do this:
•for s-on download boot.img and flash via fastboot flash boot boot.img
but I don't know how to do this. I have downloaded the boot1008.img renamed it to boot.img on the root of my sdcard - but I can't find any option to install it in 4EXT or in the Fastboot (<- i assume fastboot is when you power off and hold volume down and power on - that menu).
Can someone please help?
I don't have s-on but if I'm not mistaken
you have to put a copy of the boot.img into your fastboot folder on your pc. Then power your phone into hboot by holding volume down and tapping the power button. Keep holding the volume button down untill you see the white hboot screen. It will say hboot on the screen to verify your in hboot mode. Then open up your command prompt and type cd then hit enter then type
c:\AndroidSDK\platform-tools\
Then type
fastboot flash boot boot.img
It should allow you to flash the boot.

Hm. Maybe just try manually wiping everything from recovery instead? I never use superwipes and as long as I factory data reset x2, wipe cache/dalvik x2, I never have issues. That's just how I've done it on all my phones and I never have issues.
I just flashed Newts One S RC3. It took me a while but I finally found a method that worked. I did it once and got through set-up and was in play store downloading apps when it went into boot loop. I tried the same method again and it didn't work. I messed around with different methods for a while before getting the following to work.
What I'm using:
HTC Unlock method
Hboot 1.5
S-on
cwm recovery 4.0.1.4
I used a computer to fastboot to recovery. Did factory data reset, wipe dalvik, and cache all x2. I installed the .zip rom file from SD card. And then installed the .zip anthrax ics RLS5 kernel file from SD card. Then I rebooted and so far everything is working fine. I've been running it for a couple hours now. I manually downloaded my apps one by one from the play store for fear of repeating what happened to me the first time. And I've just finished signing in to everything I use and haven't had an issue yet.
I hope this helps.

Yes i herd about this but have you tried charging or connecting your phone to a computer, many people can't charge or connect to computer via USB because of this kernel
Idk before I sent my phone in a had been using that kernel. I had no trouble charging/connecting. But really what it comes down to is every one of these phones is different, then you throw in the hboot and other key factors and it just gets worse.

Turn off smartflash if you are s-off you dont need it.
Then flash chads htc leak rls1 kernel, that stopped all the bootloops and problems for me its something about the stock kernel i am guessing. Everything worked fine after using that kernel. Anthrax rls5 says not to use it with sense 3.6, its right on androidfilehost. Chad said to use the leak rls1 instead for sense 3.6.
boot loop

In my case I can't get any ROM based on the leaked RUU to boot unless I changed the kernel, this applies to both 3.6 and 4.0 ROMs. I don't know if you're GSM or CDMA but I know the kernel from Shooter_Ice works for me which is a GSM ROM. I can flash that over just about any ROM and it works or I can install the ROM straight up and it works to. If you're GSM, try that, if you're CDMA then look for a similar ROM that isn't based on the HTC leak.

ICS ROMs bootloop if you are Hboot 1.5 S-On (which you are if you unlocked via HTC). I recommend you get S-off using the wire trick or downgrade to 1.4 S-off. See the stickies in the CDMA Development section (or GSM development) to find information and steps on how to do it.

+1, go s-off and you can flash anything you want
Loop FIX
Sometimes you will get boot loops even with 4ext.
One thing that I have found which works is flashing mean ROM 2.4 ICS as a base.
This ROM probably will not boot or will get stuck in a boot loop but that is fine in this case. From there on use 4ext to complete a "dirty install" of another ICS ROM. I recommend SOS De-Sensed Rom. Sometimes flashing a ICS ROM on top of another ICS ROM (booting or non booting) allows for install.
to bypass all the bs go straight to fastboot and flash 4ext recovery 1.00.5 and do the s off wiretrick and then try to flash the rom... when you get s off it releases more permissions for the kernel to flash to the rom without having to use flash image gui from joekrimz
try this
ok you need to flash the boot.img file trough the bootloader, if that doesnt work try flash image gui
Flash custom rom then pull out your battery, go to fastboot then try flash this boot.img with fastboot http://db.tt/kEUVhnvV

HBOOT 1.5
unlocked
currently has 4EXT recovery
running gingerbread (synergy)
every time i try to install an ICS rom it freezes on boot (some cases crashes as soon as you see the lockscreen)
i can however install gingerbread roms without problems
ive tried using ota's (what apperantly doesnt work if its rooted and has an recovery flashed)
cwm recovery (which i cant flash kernels)
twrp (can only install ingerbread roms, ICS roms still freeze on boot)
4EXT (first flash boot.img through fastboot than install rom, this works lil bit better than twrp becouse some ICS roms get to the unlock screen befoor they crash)
can anyone please help me? ):

You need to be S-off in order to flash an ICS ROM, unless you use 4EXT smart flash, which isn't guaranteed to work.

OK, some more information would help, like why can't you install them? Are you getting an error? Are you flashing the correct hboot?

ive got TuopunutBear's custom HBOOT 1.50.5050
and im in an bootloop (it crashes right after the HTC logo)
cant even flash GB roms anymore
You need to be using either the sprint 1.58 or the vm 1.57 hboots afaik
You just need to get back the bootloader first - take out the battery, put it back in, power on, hold volume down...

Frank....I think the issue is you probably installed the wrong rom version....This is very important that you install the correct rom for Evo 3d GSM or CDMA version or you would get Bootloop...I would suggest you install this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1991150
and make sure you use 4EXT latest version, S-Off, Unlocked...
This rom is Viper3d Sense 4.1 and the most stable and fast ICS rom so far for GSM and CDMA......Since you have S-off and unlocked...you dont have to flash the boot.img separately....just copy the rom files to Sdcard then follow my instruction:
1)Do a full wipe (Wipe data/reset factory, Wipe cach+davik, Format partrition [without Sdcard])
2)Install from zip card,,,then choose the rom....
3)Reboot...it should work great if you do as i said.....
Furthermore....i would recommend you install Anthrax kernel....i dont know if the forum is allow me to send the link here.....??

I had this issue. If every Rom you flash bootloops, you may want to run the ruu.exe to reset your phone (you'll still be s-off). Hopefully this will get your phone booting. Then flash a custom hboot (I use 1.4 revolutionary) and then custom recovery (I use 4ext). You should be able to flash anything at that point (except a select few roms).
You can get the ruu.exe and other files from the thread I linked earlier.
GET HBOOT 1.49.0007 unlocked and s-off and 4ext as recovery then it should.work with most roms!

NO, NO, NO! He's CDMA and that's a GSM hboot. Don't flash that or it'll be trouble.

Wait, is he REALLY CDMA?
I'm confused right now.
It says he's from Europe, which usually uses GSM.
-shrugs-
Well, all I have to add is if you're flashing the kernel right away, don't set the overclock value to high, that's what causes bootloops/hangs.
Set your max cpu to stock (1188 MHz) for now. Then once it boots, overclock. I find that anything fast 15XX MHz causes bootloops with new versions of kernels.
I bought it from ebay becouse it was so much cheaper (I know europe is gsm only)
do I have to run an ruu or flash hboot
And which versions of those
Sent from my M9300 using xda app-developers app
First i need to identify what version of phone you are using frank...do you use simcard?if yes...then your phone is Gsm...otherway is Cdma....let me know first

it is CDMA from sprint
Go to this website www.htcruu.com and make sure you install the correct ruu to return to stock rom. At first you need to lock your phone by using fastboot flash lock oem....(google how to lock your phone ) then run the ruu file...
After that, unlock your phone again. So tour phone now would be Unlocked+S-off. At thia stage, you can install viper3d rom without problem...make sure you choose ruu for sprint with ics+radio 11.77

Roms wont flash

Sorry if the answers im looking for are somewhere else but i cant find them. Im not new to the rooting game but it has been awhile, last phone rooted was the original evo and ive fallen behind on the new software and such. anyways ive rooted successfully and am running hboot 1.19 with s-on. for some reason i get the same error message when flasing a rom saying that sdcard cannot be found. do i need to be running s-off with 1.19 to flash roms? Thanks!

What rom are you flashing? What recovery are you using? What release of said recovery are you using? can you see the sdcard in the listing of the recovery screen?

Hopefully that all that is needed... but S-OFF is the way to go if you can do it. It will save you so many headaches in the future. HTC is making it harder on s-on people to do anything to their phone, this started with the 3.15 JB update and will probably get worse. S-OFF my friend S-OFF

Hold the phone. Flashing TOO new of a recovery (like TWRP 2.4.1) can also cause problems. There's something that the dev has to place in the ROM in order to be compatible with 2.4.1. May I suggest you try 2.3.1? It seems to be the "sweet spot" and works with most ROMs out there today.
Here's the install page for the evo 4g LTE:
