Stock recovery question - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I probably should of asked this before flashing but anyways, I flashed CWM to my tablet and I am about to flash aokp to it but I was wondering if I was going to go to back to complete stock again does it matter what stock 3.2 recovery I use to get official updates? I did make a nandroid backup so I am not to worried about getting a stock OS but its just the stock recovery that bothers me.
For the record I have a Canadian WIFI 16 gig tablet.

Official updates...? Odin is the only official update you need! :] Just so you know, you can't completely revert to stock unless it's for that specific firmware, only way to do that is by a clean flash to avoid all the un-necessary bricks and such.
Nandroid backup does not exist on stock and last I checked the recovery and CWM do the same job of "Applying update.zip" so it shouldn't matter, it's the firmware's regional value that matters, not the recovery.

So if I were to do a restore of my nandroid backup (from CWM) then that means that I would be able to get the notice that I would be able to update to the latest official firmware from Samsung no problem?

As long as you don't use Cus ROM's then yes.

[Q] (Q) Backup of original "Android system recovery <3e>"?

I want to grab some software off a stock galaxy ace from the same provider as mine. However, before I root it and install CWM, I want a way to revert it to Android system recovery <3e>. Obviously, I cannot back up the stock phone, it's unrooted and has no CWM recovery backup yet, and once I install CWM, it won't have the stock recovery anymore. Any way to get the stock system recovery?

There's no flashable zip or whatever .
All you need to do is to flash any firmware via ODIN

If u flash any stock rom ,u will get your stock recovery back =D
Where can I get a stock rom for the device, though? I can't take a backup to make my own without CWM...I assume I could learn to use Odin with a tutorial somewhere, but Odin can't take a backup, can it?
sammobile.com
Nice site. I don't suppose the Europe or Asia firmwares will work in North America, though? (Canada).

[Q] Help fixing CWM

Some background info: I got my phone used, so the rooting and stuff was done for me.
When I got the phone, the top of the recovery said Semaphore CWM 6.something, I don't know what I did to it but now the recovery says CWM based recovery. I also notice that fix permissions is not there anymore, there is probably more things missing that I never noticed. My question is, How do I get back to the original Clockworkmod?
Also, does anyone want to give me the basics on flashing stuff? I see people talking about Titanium Backup and ROM Manager. Every time I want to make a backup I just go into the recovery and make a backup there. What's ROM Manager? What's the best way to do this kind of stuff?
EDIT: I just booted back into recovery since a while (when I flashed my current rom) and noticed that it's back to normal. It says Semaphore CWM Recovery 6.0.3.8, when it used to say CWM-based recovery 6.0.3.6. Back then, it also gave me a warning called Warning: no file_contexts. That's gone now, should I have anything to worry about?

Usually your ROM comes pre-packaged with a version of recovery.
ROMs that use the Semaphore kernel also generally come pre-packaged with a modified version of Clockworkmod recovery designed to compliment the kernel.
for reference:
if your recovery says: CWM recovery X.X.X.X then its usually the official version
Semaphore CWM Recovery 6.0.3.8 is a modified version for use with Semaphore kernel
CWM-based recovery 6.0.3.6 - is a modified version likely for use with another kernel (They dont always specify)
I would recommend just sticking with whatever version comes with your ROM.
there is rarely a need to change it.
ROM manager is an App that makes flashing clockworkmod recovery easy as well as downloading and flashing ROMs.
but for the most part if you know how to use recovery already your probably better off doing stuff manually in my opinion.
Titanium backup - is an app that lets you back up and restore all of your installed apps and data.
so for instance if you wanted to install a new ROM. you could back your apps and data up with Titanium backup and then install your new ROM and even wipe user data and still be able to get all of your apps back just as they were before you switched ROMs.
in comparison a nandroid backup (the backup done through recovery) backs up everything including your current ROM so restoring from that would also restore whatever ROM you were using when you made the backup.
as an example if you do both a Nandroid and Titanium backup while running android 2.3
then you decide to update to android 4.1
after the update if you restore from the nandroid backup you will be back at android 2.3 with all of your apps and everything back the way it was.
if you restore from a titanium backup you'll still be on android 4.1 but you'll have all your apps back as they were before.

[Q] Correct way to first time flash ROM... then return to originally running one?

Would the following work as a way to try out, for example Cyanogenmod 10. I am currently running a 4.1.2 install (pretty much stock just rooted/cwm via Philz as per the tutorial). I have a complete backup made via Philz recovery of this rom along with the kernel (which I believe is still stock from that) and efs.
1) Install a custom kernel (eg. dorimanx 9.x?) via the Philz recovery.
2) Install cm-10.2-20140102-NIGHTLY-i9100.zip.
3) To return to the original rom, reflash the original kernel (with whatever CWM is included in dorimanx) - then reflash the backed up rom via the same recovery?
I hope this is clear enough a question.
I believe you have to flash a stock rom through Odin, to return to complete stock. Just flashing a stock kernel isn't enough, and is surely not going to work (so don't do it). There are also tutorials how to remove the yellow triangle afterwards.
Please correct me if I'm wrong

This is the part I'm most unsure of. Ideally I'm trying to figure out the process that lets me go from CM10.2 (and whatever recovery) to the point I am running the backed up rom rooted with PhilZ-cwm6-XWLSW-XEU-5.06.1-signed.zip again. Very confused on how to do so.

Topher,
If you have rooted and cwm via philz, you already have a modified kernel installed. I believe the philz-cwm6 should be as close to stock kernel with the CWM incorporated. You don't need to add another kernel, because it will be replaced when you install the custom ROM. You should just be able to flash the cm10.2 via philz or via odin. You can then flash the dormanix kernel if you want - can't comment on that kernel - or if it has cwm included.
I would also suggest that you consider backing up you /efs folder (one with you imei information etc) prior to flashing any custom roms. People have been using hcKtool to do the backups and also an actual copy as well.
Depending on the custom rom, you may have connection problems with your network. So you may want to consider keeping a copy of your modem.bin file from your stock rom handy in case you need to flash onto the custom rom.
If you want to go back to stock, then you just need to flash the stock rom - you can check sammobile website for your stock rom or use the backup that you made.
I should point out that I have yet to do any of the above - I gathered this from reading the forums. Some more experienced forum users can add corrections. I rooted my phone a couple of months ago and now considering installing custom rom in the next couple of months.
Thanks.
if u flash a custom rom (cm10.2 for example), it already included kernel as well. so if u want to try out other custom kernel, i can flash it after you are done flashing a custom rom but make sure it is compatible with your android version. (u cant use custom kernel that not support android 4.3 with a custom rom running android 4.3)

Returning to the stock without flashing it?

Hello. I am new to the world of rooting and flashing and one learn as things go. I own SGIII III I 9300. I rooted it, installed CWM, then flashed Archidroid v3.1.3, installed TWRP instead of CWM, upgraded Archidroid to 3.1.4 without creating a backup before root. It works nice and all but I would like to get my old stock ROM back with or without root, just as it comes from a factory. The thing is I cannot find an appropriate stock ROM (I am from Slovakia and my zone is I9300XXUGNA8 - there are stock ROMs with this zone but they are not intended for my country) and anyway, it would take like 9 hours to download it without buying a premium acc. Before flashing Archidroid I made a backup in CWM, it has got several files of which 2 are ISO.
My question is, if it is possible to somehow get to the clean stock ROM? I was thinking of returning to the backup I made in CWM, but I am not sure if the backup is compatible with TWRP. After restoring the backup I would just do a system wipe (including dalvik and cache). Would it work? Sorry if this has been answered somewhere but I haven't found anything.

Switching between recoveries help

Hello,
I want to switch from CWM to TWRP.
The problem is, that when I flashed CWM, my android was 4.1.2 version, and so was the recovery.
I've already flashed newer rom than 4.1.2, and now I want to switch to TWRP.
My concern is: Now that I downloaded the latest TWRP and I use Nandroid, it prompts me that the TWRP .img file is built for 4.1.2 android, so can I still flash the TWRP although I have higher version than 4.1.2?
*Also, is Nandroid a working way to switch between recoveries? I've never done that before, and I just came across a thread that suggests using Nandroid to flash new reocvery over the existing one.
Thanks!
TWRP or CWM Recoveries will work in all android versions. Just download twrp-2.8.6.1-i9300.tar flash it via odin. Here is the link - https://dl.twrp.me/i9300/
