Bricked after Booting new ROM in Boot Manager Pro - HTC EVO 3D

I was running infectedROM Sense 3.0, and I had successfully set up several other ROMs via boot manager previously. Today I just installed Playground ICS to an SD slot through boot manager and I backed up my phone ROMs boot img and clicked reboot to playground. The phone rebooted and showed the splash screen. After about 10 seconds on the splash screen, it shut off and won't turn back on. No charge light, regular boot and vol down + power both don't work. All I need to do is get to recovery, then I have to flash the update.zip for my phone ROM in the bootmanager folder. Can anyone help me get into recovery or the bootloader?
edit: I installed playground by installing the zip, and I didn't install any other mods/kernels on top of playground. On the other ROMs I have installed in boot manager, I installed them via a nandroid backup.

If you look through the last few pages of the Playground ICS thread, it is an issue and can be fixed, but its not that easy unless you know what you are doing. I hope you have a linux box.

looks like I've got my work cut out for me. Glad I have a dual boot with Ubuntu...anyway thanks for your help.

no problem. You might want to post anything further in that thread, you will probably get more help over there. But either way let us know if you succeed.

Do you know how many times I tried to brick this thing when I was downgrading? I almost gave up! And you do it by accident? Lucky you
Edit... Sorry bout your luck, hope all goes well.

no luck so far, I opened windows sda13 thru sdk13 and none of them found the device. i guess i'll reboot and try sda13-sdz13 lol.
Just took my phone to a sprint store, after about 30 min the repair guy came back and handed me the phone. He told me he doesn't have the tools necessary to fix it so I need to come back tomorrow, but he said I'm going to have to lose all my data in order to get the phone working again using his method. I hope the emmc_recover works tonight, or tomorrow I'll probably have hboot 1.5 and s-on
Is it possible that emmc_recover won't work because I'm on the engineering hboot?
I just realized I should probably post in the downgrade hboot thread, so I'm doing that now.
EDIT: fixed my phone flawlessly, the only reason it didn't work the first time is I forgot to pull the battery before plugging it in. Thanks again for your guys' help!

Post-trial of ICS Playground
w0rd,
I had the same problem with my EVO after playing around with this as well. For all others that may have this problem here was my solution...
Symptoms:
After trying to re-flash from ICS Playground to another ROM my phone was stuck at the HTC splash screen and would not do anything. I restarted into recovery and was unsuccessful; even tried to recover to my original files and after that it passed the splash screen and then the screen went black.
Resolution:
Finally used fastboot into recovery and flashed another ROM and it worked. Morale of the story use fastboot from your computer to get into recovery and Flash your ROM.
Hope this helps...

I appreciate the reply. However, the problem I had was with one specific release of playground which bricked my phone once installed. I couldn't boot into recovery or the bootloader; the screen wouldn't turn on no matter what. Fastboot won't work from this state. The only way to unbrick at that point without going to a sprint store is to use the emmc_recover tool that's part of the hboot 1.5 downgrade process (in case this happens to you or anyone else, you have to follow step 3 ONLY in the downgrade process in order to recover from bricking your phone)

Just curious. How do you know it was a specific release, and did it happen to anyone else? Do you know the cause of it?

The links netwokz provided above showed me that it was a specific release. TwistedUmbrella was experimenting (and I downloaded the experimental ROM, not one of the more "stable" releases) to try to get usb mount to pc to work, and something was wrong in the build I downloaded because it wiped the emmc so I couldn't boot to the phone, recovery, or bootloader. Basically, the ROM bricked my phone in the same way that you're supposed to brick your phone when downgrading from hboot 1.5. Luckily, Twistedumbrella is a great dev who helped people who bricked their devices out. In case you're worried about running into the same issue I did, the build that bricked me is no longer online, as he's updated the experimental and regular download links.
I know it was a specific release because I wasn't the only person who reported this problem. I think it was the 1 am experimental build from 03/22. Anyway, I'm now downloading twistedumbrella's latest experimental. Back to the ROM flashing game

With boot manger they say you must be running the same os as your phone rom or you could brick it. If your phone rom is GB I would recommended running GB roms instead of ICS roms

I haven't had any sort of issue from running an ICS ROM in boot manager while running a sense 3.0/3.5 ROM as my default OS. This reported brick was caused by one specific release of playground ICS that would have bricked my phone in the exact same way if I just installed it through my recovery instead of through boot manager. Boot manager wasn't at fault here.
This thread was resolved several days ago. Can I close this thread or something? I've never tried to before so idk how to go about doing that...Well in the meantime, I guess I can just hope nobody else decides not to read page one before posting...

[HTC Unlocked] I just flashed a kernel through TWRP recovery like normal?

I'm a little lost. Let me explain what just happened.
1st 3D was having reboots randomly and BSOD.. so I replaced it.
Picked up new 3D today.
It's Hboot 1.50.000 (oh noez)
I unlock via HTC method
(( Now with HTC's method it's my understanding that you can flash a custom recovery and roms, but you're locked on the Kernel that came with your phone and thus no aosp roms/kernels OR if you're trying to flash a sense rom but the rom has a higher kernel than the one on your phone - you're still up the creek))
After unlocking with HTC's method I promptly went into TWRP, wiped everything without a nand backup because if it screws up i'm using my upgrade lol. I then flashed Eternity 3.0 R39.. to my surprise it worked fine. I didn't test if I could OC.
I then rebooted into recovery through power button and then installed the current miui rom, immediately followed by the Anthrax AOSP kernel.. to my surprise I got no errors of any sort, booted up fast as hell, restored SetCPU and Oc'd to 1.8 just fine.. been going for about 15-20 minutes now just like normal.

I bet you got a refurb that someone previously rooted. If they used revolutionary then you retain S-off even on hboot 1.50 when the refurb facility repaired the device. Why don't you check if you're S-off?
It was S-On. That was the first thing I checked while walking out of the store. S-On 1.50.000
How strange. Hopefully people will keep coming to the thread and ask the right question. With the right question, the right answer will come to shed some light on what is special about your scenario.
Unfortunately that will not be me, because I have hboot 1.4, thus have less knowledge on the HTC unlock method.
Hopefully this has happened to someone else. I'm not sure why it happened. :O

umm i have hboot 1.50 unlocked htc method and i can flash any rom or kernal i want by just booting into recovery through fastboot its an extra step that takes about 10 seconds with a copy and paste of 2 commands from dos prompt
Yeah, I'm not sure why there's this myth that you can't flash kernels with 1.5, just need to load recovery in fastboot. Only limit I know of for 1.5 is that I can't use boot manager (if I'm wrong, let me know because I would love to use it). Either way, doesn't sound like OP was flashing through fastboot, which is odd.

Sounds like after unlocking with htc method you never disconnected your phone from PC and directly booted recovery from fastboot when you flashed TWRP .
So there's nothing new, i guess.
Every hboot1.50 user can flash kernels whether it is sense kernel or AOSP......
You can also use Flash image GUI to flash custom kernels from within the running android environment too.
So far JUST using HTC's unlock method I'm able to do the following
Flash custom roms through recovery like normal
Flash custom kernels through recovery like normal
Perform Nandroid backups/restores of EVERYTHING
UNABLE TO FLASH A CUSTOM SPLASH SCREEN
I thought this was going to be horrible going from a 1.40.000 device to 1.50.000 but honestly it's exactly like when I used Revolutionary to unlock my 1.40.000 device. And yes - I did leave my USB cable hooked up from start to finish. Hopefully other people will see this thread.
I tried Flash GUI and I couldn't get it to work for me so I guess I'm grateful. I'll check if I can install a splash screen once I post this and edit with the update.

You can flash kernels through fastboot. But you stated that you booted into recovery using power button, so it doesn't sound like you used fastboot....
You didn't use the flashimage GUI app, did you?
Sounds strange to me. Did you check the kernel In settings after you flashed? Don't think Its possible for stock kernel to support miui, but I suppose its possible.
Either way, you had something happen that shouldn't have. Either got a kernel to flash in a way that it shouldn't have, or got a rom to run on a kernel that shouldn't be compatible.
Another possible thing....I wonder if the 2.08.651.3 update did something that allows for you to flash kernels now. We know it wasn't possible on the .2 software, has anyone tried it with. 3. Doubt it made a difference as it was supposed to be a security update only.
Who knows. Ill give it a shot tomorrow to see if I can flash kernels without fastboot or flashimage GUI.

If you can flash a splash or radio then you should seek out a dev and let them know. They would probably have you do some tests. Might help achieve s off on 1.50

I tried it but when I booted into miui I got stuck at the boot screen. Miui boots in about 30 seconds or so on a fresh install but I was there for over 10 minutes.
Right now my phone is flashing Eternity 3.0 - R39 followed by Anthrax kernel. I'll let you guys know in a sec.
Edit: Well, the kernel flashed successfully but I'm freezing in the middle of the boot screen. Gonna try another kernel
Okay while booting Eternity 3.0 R39 I froze up mid boot screen. I remembered seeing a post about it freezing and I found it here and did what he said to do and it all works fine now. This is after I flashed rom+kernel in recovery then rebooted.

I'm unable to flash a splash, and I've never flashed a radio before.
But as of right now I can flash kernels/recoveries/roms from TWRP. I'll try flashing a bootscreen with Rom Toolbox real quick just for extra measure.
Edit: can flash custom boot screens. One thing I cant seem to do though is take screenshots with screenshot it. When it saves it's always corrupted and wont let me transfer the screenshot to anything.
From what I gather, the questions you have answered still haven't shed any light as to whether your phone is behaving in a matter that is the same anyone else in your situation would experience? If it is still in fact behaving different than what we would expect it to I think the suggestion given to you to contact a Dev would be best. You may end up and be able to help the community achieve a more comprehensive solution to the root process.

could it be possible htc updated their unlock process to allow access to the boot.img without using fastboot?
ok. so I finally got around to trying to flash a kernel without using fastboot to see if it would work.
It did not. Like others have reported, it will say that the flash is successful, but when I go into the "about phone" menu, it did not change.
I have CM7 (secretpartymeow) on it now with stock (as in whatever kernel came with the ROM) kernel. Tried flashing infected Anthrax (aosp). No luck.
It is indeed looking more and more like your phone is a bit of an anomoly. I would suggest contacting one of the devs over at TeamWin to let them know what you are able to do.

[Q] Constant reboot and a few almosts

Ok, this is my first post so be gentle. I tried to root my sons phone and now it's useless. I went thru HTC's website to unlock bootloader due to having HBOOT 1.5. I'm unlocked and thinking life is good but, I loaded several different ROM's and get the same result. It starts to load the ROM and reboots, sometimes it goes into a safemode with the Viper Rom. I've been jacking with this for 2 days and need some help. I can't find a good link for the RUU or PG86...bla bla bla, I would take it back to stock and surrender but, can't even do that. I've installed TWRP and CWM, just to try different stuff, but get all the same reults.
I think you need to flash the boot.img separately. I'm not sure though. There's a thread for flashing with 1.50 somewhere in the development section
We're comin from a pure power source.
I am having the same issue here, I installed several ROMS, it works for a day, but then the reboot attack starts. Constant lockups and random restarts, sometimes 3 reboots in a row.
ROMs I tried to flash:
1. Xperia XE
2. Titan Trinity 3 HD
3. Nocturnal Adrenaline 1.0.2
Maybe it's the kernel, is there a list of kernels that I can flash?
This worked for me
My phone kept rebooting after root before, but I managed to fix it. This will only work if you can get into fastboot. Download the ruu file located here and run it while in fastboot. This will unroot your phone if you have S-On. After that is done, if it still loops, take out the battery and count to five, then put the battery in and hold the power button on the phone until the phone starts to turn on normally. That fixed my problem, hope it fixes yours. You may have to update after you get your phone started and you will lose all your data. Sorry about the link, I updated to one that has a working download.

Unroot my phone?
Is it possible to re-root it?
Thanks all for the posts. I will give some of this a shot and see what happens. I can get to fastboot, and have loaded a couple of things thru the cmd prompt to try and help, but nothing so far. I'm not really sure if the kernel thing is what's stopping the roms for loading. I can't get the S-OFF, I'm unlocked. I can send anything I want thru the cmd prompt, and also flash zips thru twrp or cwm. Would like to start over but ca't even find a way to do that. Thanks again for the posts.
Cardmastr, we're on the same boat, pg86 takes forever to download, so as I'm waiting patiently, keep me in on the loop with what you're doing.
RUU didn't cut it, kept failing. have not found an image file to flash thru the cmd prompt. Still no luck. What can I throw into fast boot that might help me?????!!!!!!
When I started flashing after using HTC Unlock, I ran "fastboot boot recovery.img" - which booted TWRP with the necessary permissions. Then I wiped everything and flashed the ROM. Haven't had any issues with the ROMs I've tried.
Which recovery did you install? Twrp 1.1.1 is your best bet.
The 2.x version twrp or cwm do not okay nice with some phones.
S3nt from my 3D wond3rland
I used the TWRP 1.1.1. Might of messed up with some of the cmd prompt stuff I'm going back thru.

[Q]Phone won't load OS and won't boot into recovery

Excuse me if I missed an existing thread with this issue, I have looked and didn't find one with exact problem.
It seems everyone else has one of the two problems, not both.
As the title claims, when I turn on my phone it freezes on the white background-green htc screen and won't load the OS.
I tried removing the batter then turning back on with power-volume down but nothing happens. That hboot menu doesn't show up.
As soon as I let go of the buttons, it attempts to start up normally then freezes again at the same screen.
Last night I rooted my phone (first time I've ever rooted) and installed SolidRom Suite ICS Sense 3.6 and it worked perfectly.
I then removed battery, went into hboot menu, cleared the catches and did a factory reset. I then attempted to install the SolidRom Suite JB 4.1.1
This is when it loaded the white screen-green htc and froze. I thought it was loading the rom slowly (First time like I said, I didn't know what to expect)
It was 2am so I just fell asleep. I woke up to a dead phone. I plugged it in to a charger and have been attempting to get access to the phone all morning with no luck.
CDMA (Sprint)

Any other information you need? Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I just hope I didn't kill my phone
While rooting last night, I was using a youtube video as a cross reference to the directions I was using from AFs.
I asked the creator of the video the same thing and this is what he replied with
DON ,T BE SCARED (are u?)
this thing is called BOOTLOOP
the rom has problems OR U DID NOT FLASH THE KERNAL!!!!
to flash the kernal u need a working software and install an program called flash image gui
restore your nandroid back u created before flashing
DID U MADE A NANDROID BACK UP
If no
then u need to download the ruu image of your phone GOOGLE TIME keep searching until u got one

1-I didn't know I needed to flash the kernel if I was going to stick with the one provided with the custom ROM (is that a gross conceptual error?)
2-If I do need to flash the kernel first... I have no idea how.
3-I looked up flash image gui and all the instructions assume your phone is working fine so I'm not sure what I'm suppose to do with that.
I was so excited when the first rom (ICS) worked... guess that's what I get for then trying to upgrade to JB.
Thanks a lot guys. That noob video I watched to register on this site is so spot on.
update: I finally figured out how to fastboot. I keep trying clear caches then factory reset. I install new rom and then it bootloops again. What am I doing wrong?
I recommend you follow ramjet's guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889438
It will reset your phone back to stock (hopefully stopping the bootloops) and then get you s-off using the wire trick. This will allow you to flash ROMs without worrying about flashing kernels. It will also allow you to change hboots, which I think was what caused the issue in the first place. I think all the jb ROMs don't boot on hboot 1.58.
I was able to return the phone to factory settings. I then retried and now I get past the splash screen and am frozen at the next Sprint screen.
I'm still at it. I'll get it eventually.

It was 2am so I just fell asleep. I woke up to a dead phone. I plugged it in to a charger and have been attempting to get access to the phone all morning with no luck.

I'm amusing he's talking about hboot there. Am I wrong?
I'm about to try that wire trick. Regardless of everything else, it seems to make life easier down the road.

HELP Rooted and Installed ARHD Now Phone Hangs at Quietly Brilliant

Sorry I'm a noob at all of this. Successfully rooted my phone today thanks to Honsoon2000's excellent tutorial and toolkit. Then I went to install Android Revolution, which appeared to go successfully and then after I flashed the kernel the phone wouldn't load and just hangs at the quietly brilliant screen. I followed Honsoon's tutorial to the T (or so I thought) and everything went perfectly until right at the end when I flashed the kernel. I can make it back to the bootloader screen though it says "failed to load usb master mode". I can still make it into fastboot and recovery mode...tried recovery, and the process seemed to go sucessfully, but the phone still wouldn't load after...tried reinstalling ARHD-- it's still on the sd card and the install procedure still goes off without a hitch, but the phone still won't load. I've searched around and tried everything I can, to no avail. Any help would be muchly appreciated, and I apologize in advance for being a noob wasting people's time.
Edit: For example, when I follow the steps outlined in the FAQ it asks me to enter the command 'fastboot flash boot boot.img' , but when I do it says 'error: cannot load boot.img'.
Edit 2: So I put my boot.img file from Android Revolution into the data directory of the rooting toolkit and was able to complete the above flashboot command. I was also able to install the ROM off my SD card...however the phone still hangs on the Quietly Brilliant screen...I can't even power the phone down...whenever I try it just reboots...frustrating...really hoping someone can help me...cheers.
Before you begin, make sure that the drivers for the One X+ are installed.
Place the boot image being used on the computer's hard drive.
Boot in to recovery and flash the ROM.
When that is done, boot in to bootloader and connect the phone to the PC via a USB cable.
If the phone isn't in fastboot mode already, use the volume keys to highlight the word "fastboot", then press the power button.
Now, there should be text at the bootloader screen that says "Fastboot USB".
Finally, use the toolkit or command line and flash the kernel with the fastboot command.
This should successfully flash the ROM and the kernel. Make sure you full wipe before flashing a new ROM. If you can't seem to get the new ROM booting, the final choice is to relock the bootloader and run a RUU.
Which phone version you do own? International or AT&T / TELUS?
Did you flashed the correspondant boot.img? Did you cleared the cache? ( fastboot erase cache)
I'm trying to run an RUU but it keeps saying the battery isn't charged enough to flash anything...and this after it's been plugged in all day. Oh dear I think my phone might be done...really sucks :/
Also, it won't let me power the phone down-- every time i try it shuts the phone off briefly and then opens back up to the bootloader screen.
Fixed thanks to sarcasticphoenix. Cheers.
OK so I've tried 3 times to flash a new ROM onto my phone (Android Revolution twice and Eleganzia once) using Honsoon's toolkit...I've followed every instruction to the T as far as I can tell and all 3 times the process has gone perfectly right until the end when I flash the kernel...after that when I reboot the phone it just hangs at the Quietly Brilliant screen. I know how to relock the bootloader, flash the custom rom and get my phone back...but I really want to know what I'm doing wrong so I can install a custom ROM. I know I'm using the right ROM for my phone and am wondering what gives. Being driven crazy here...any ideas what's going wrong here would be helpful. BTW on the last attempt right after I finished and the phone hung I went into the boot loader and followed the instructions in the FAQ for fixing a bootloop...still nothing.
Edit: Solved my problem-- I managed to successfully load eleganzia...the only thing i did differently the last time was flash the kernel BEFORE installing the ROM off the SD card.

That's usually what I do first, flash the kernel and then install the zip via recovery
Sent from my HTC One X+ using xda premium
Which kernel are you referring too? Actually there is one or two kernels available but only for the International version, not the AT&T/TELUS which you seem to have.
I strongly suspect that your boot looping was because you didn't flash the boot.img file correctly or not at all. And you don't seem to install the good ROM version for your phone.
Elegancia has two ROM versions one for International and one for AT&T/TELUS users.
ARHD is for International users.
Please read Q12 of the FAQ.

Lol...yeah I don`t know how I missed that. I ended up getting elegancia successfully flashed and loaded so all is well. In retrospect this was a good experience because there`s nothing like having to get yourself unforked from a bad situation to gain an understanding of what`s going on. Cheers.
I have a couple questions and since I`m not allowed to post yet in the elegancia thread I'll try in this thread first:
1) An elegancia question: Is there a way (widget) to toggle data roaming on and off in this ROM?
2) Is there a way to tweak settings (transparent pull down, selection of launcher etc.) without wiping and reflashing the ROM?
3) What are people's favorite launcher for that ROM? I tried Atom but it was just a guess because I hadn't heard of any of them. I like it so far but am curious about the others.

[Q] Stuck at Boot Splash after Installing custom ROM

I made a stupid mistake when unlocking my DNA and flashing a custom ROM (ViperDNA 4.1). I ran the rumrunner S-OFF which seemed to go without flaw. The mistake I made was checking to see if root installed which I'm assuming now it didn't. I installed Clockwork Recovery on it and booted into recovery and installed ViperDNA which gave errors. When I rebooted I was stuck at the boot splash. I tried an unbricking method posted on YouTube that required going into Fastboot USB and running an OEM Lock command and then using HTC's ROM update utility to reflash stock back to it which failed. I've rooted and flashed recovery to a lot of devices so I wouldn't consider myself to be a total noob but I'm at a loss here. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :fingers-crossed:
Black htc screen with triangles on each corner
Man I really need help. ...I tried to flash and something went wrong to where I erased the entire os and I continued to fix this issue because all I had access to was twrp(custom rom) and bootloader. then what was crazy is that it appeared that based on the fact that I was on 4.4.2 kit kat that I was unable to fix it. after researching I found a ruu that didn't have the boot image so I flashed the factory ruu with no boot image and my htc scrren with the status bar filled all the way up but it never moved off of that screen I assume because that ruu didn't have the boot image so I thought that common sense would be to at one of the boot images that I had to the zip file of the ruu without the boot image....that's when I made things worst and now im stuck on this htc screen with the four triangles...my pc wont detect my device and im in need of some serious help....can you help? can anybody help?
I believe i can help!!!

I had the same problem last night. I couldn't get fastboot to work properly and thought I was screwed. Here is what I did:
I downloaded a stock rooted rom and put it on a flash drive. I used my USB OTG cable and booted into recovery. I then mounted the external drive and flashed the stock 4.1 rom back on it and that cleared it up. I haven't re-tried to flash the ROM I tried, but I think my issue was an old recovery version.
Once you get back to stock, update or change your recovery to a new one and then try again would be my suggestion.
If you don't have an OTG cable, I'd suggest at a minimum order one for when it happens again
