[Q] TF101 Media Device(MTP) or USB Mass Storage Device - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I have a rooted TF101 (ICS)
Android V:4.0.3
Kernel:2.6.39.4
I have an interesting issue. I noticed whenever I connect my TF101 it always connects to pc as Media Device, However I wanted it to connect as USB Mass Storage device so that it could have a drive letter associated with it.
When I searched on the device I see that at following location
Settings>Storage
Click on the bar at the top right, it shows another option
USB Computer connection
Click on that
It shows a pre selected option Media Device(MTP), I tried to uncheck it but seems like there have to be one selection on this page that needs selection. I was wondering if somehow both selections are unchecked then it would allow the device to connect as USB Mass Storage? any light on this?
thanks

Problem using the SGS2 as an External USB drive !

As per the heading, I abandoned carrying a USB memory stick years ago, instead I have a 16GB memory card in my phone and carry a 15CM micro USB to USB cable in my pocket, this way I can use my phone as a USB drive when ever I need it, but I have a problem with my SGS 2
1) the drive seems to randomly disconnect itself whether or not it is transferring data
2) the option to ask me what I want to do every time I connect my USB cable is missing, forcing me to go to settings--> wireless and networks---> USB utilities, just to use my phone as a USB drive ....... VERY IRRITATING
does anybody else use this feature, if so what are your findings ?
I have a similar problem, it will disconnect randomly but also when trying to update and some times when trying to transfer files. I do however get the option to view files pop up when I plug it in. I made a post earlier but no one replied, hopefully it can be fixed easily. I wouldn't really know where to start though

Um, there must be something wrong with your phone. I have not done anything special to use my SGS2 as a USB drive. It's litterally plug it in and away you go.
I just plug it into the computer, the phone says something like MTB in progress, Kies connection or whatever.
Then I get the option to view all files and folders in My Computer (windows 7).
No problems whatsoever.

I don't normally use the "MTB in progress" version as the majority of computers I plug it into do not have kies loaded.
I use the standard USB drive option in settings

Hi,
i dont have any USB connection issues, loaded my 32Gb SD and the internal Storage full and i do use a lot the Mass Storage funktion, somtetimes the connection lasts for hours, so (Win7 32Bit).
Totally agree, the settings--> wireless and networks---> USB utilities ... tapping is verry annoying. Have to do this many times a day
Maybe someone knows an solution how to set the "Mass Storage" connection as an default?
Greetz Tokl
try multimount off the market.
You need to enable usb debugging (to prevent the keis rubish launching).
then anytime you want mass storage mode, click the multimount widget.
-- Actually just enabling USB debugging seems to set mass storage mode as default.
I have the same problem but I think it's the problem of the USB port on your PC. I plug the phone in another port and everything is ok now. You can try this on another PC or another port and you'll see. Hope this helps

1) Doesn't happen on mine. Have you tried using USB ports on other computers as it could be due to a particular USB port on a particular computer doesn't supply enough current?
2) It's irritating.

So you don't have a usb icon in the notification area? Otherwise, you just have to select it to enable usb storage.

Thanks Mate!
USB Debugging prevents Kies and bring up the Mass Storage directly
One more (very small, but annoying) issue of the SGS2 solved

When I enable debugging mode, I does indeed turn on mass storage mode and it works. However, every time I unplug the phone it reboots. I do press the disconnect USB drive button and I do eject it on my PC. It still crashes. Does anyone else have this problem?

This happened to me today, and the reason was the Android browser application running in background. Using the task manager I killed browser and then I faced no problem thereafter.
So, to sum up I guess an application running in background might be the reason.
Hope this helps somebody...
It's funny you should say that, as I hardly ever get that problem anymore, and I mostly use dolphin hd browser now

If it is connecting in download mode then the cable is perfect. Flash the firmware again to check if it is working or not

[Q] USB mode?

Most other android devices i know of you can plug em in with a USB cable and it shows up on the computer like a USB memory stick. Thus far with every setting i try the prime shows up as like a camera or MTP device or whatever, makes it a pain to transfer files and it blocks some system files.
Am i missing something here or is there a way to make the prime just show up as a USB memory stick on my computer?
Have you installed the USB driver from ASUS?
http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=Eee+Pad+Transformer+Prime+TF201&p=20&s=16
Mine shows up as an MTP device but also shows the drives and they are drag and drop accesible.

[Solved] Transfering .zip files issue

Just ran into a problem with this. Have had my Note for a few days now and have transferred files to and from the PC without issue while connected through USB. Now all of the sudden I'm getting this error when trying to drag and drop .zip files...
Cannot copy Item
The device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected.
I tried with USB debugging activated and deactivated but to no avail. Any thoughts on why this might be and why it just stopped working as it was?

Here's how to connect the Galaxy Note to PC and access the memory card. (a removable disk file directory will appear on your PC, separate from internal memory of your phone.
- From idle mode, select Application list.
- Then tap on Settings
- Tap Wireless and Network
- Select USB Utilities
- then select Connect Mass Storage to PC.
Then connect your Galaxy Note to PC with the USB cable or multifunction jack
When connected Touch USB connected or Turn on USB storage
- A USB icon will appear in the top left Notifications area of the screen.
- On the PC, go to My Computer then locate the newly file drive directory that appears as your Galaxy Note mass storage. You can now have the access to browse, sync, copy or transfer files that you want from your Galaxy Note microSD card to your PC or laptop.

have you tried right clicking on the .zip and copy then paste? Or "send to"

Yes, get the same error message. This is really odd, I've never ran into anything like this before. I guess I'll try wiping the data and starting fresh again.

I've since wiped the device (factory reset) and am still unable to drag and drop, cut and paste, or send to my device, .zip files.

By default, your phone is connected using MTP only. MTP stands for Media Transport Protocol. As the name indicates, it will only allow media files to be copied over.
You will need to switch to Mass Storage mode in order to copy any other file type. Check your USB settings, there should be one to enable Mass Storage mode on USB.
That is weird but this is what i have always done...ON my Infuse for zips...
from pc to phone : right click file/ send to: pick what drive of int sd..
from phone to pc: right click file / copy/ paste.
Next question: Are you mounted correctly??
EDIT: duh! What they said above: I just asumed you were in mass storage mode

Appreciate the response! What's weird is I never changed anything as far the USB settings go, it just suddenly stopped allowing me to move the files over.
When I get back to my PC to give it another go, where might that setting be located in the Note? I haven't seen the setting you're referring to in my device for mass storage mode.
Really appreciate the help.

Does it give you a prompt upon connecting usb? Otherwise, after connecting USB, pull down the notification bar, and look for a "USB connected" item. If it's available, click it, and "connect usb storage."

yeah, since i don't have my note in hand yet i can't really help any further...but on Infuse when in settings i have checked "always ask" then when i connect to PC i drop down noti bar and hit connect.
EDIT: i just googled and found this..

The Froyo phones like Captivate and Infuse work slightly differently.
On my GS2, the setting is hidden in Settings->Wireless and Network->USB Utilities, tap the button 'Connect storage to PC' then connet your USB, you will get your phone connected as 'Mass storage mode'. You will know you are in mass stroage mode when your phone (and its microSD card) shows up as a flash drive with a drive letter. In MTP mode, your phone does not show up as flash drive. MTP mode allows audio files, video files, all the image/picture files. But not other file types.

Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!! Glad i could help.
Thanks for the info. I noticed this problem the other day, and couldn't find a setting. However software data cable, an app in the market will let you transfer files easily thru ftp.

[Q] USB mass storage mode?

Does anyone know if there is a way to connect the phone as a mass storage device without the Lg software? I work on a mac at work, and a PC at home, and transferring files on my phone is something that I used a lot. However I'm not able to install the LG software on every machine I hook my phone to.
Any insite would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

When you connect your phone, immediately push cancel (on the phone) when it is trying to check for LG software.
Also, you have some options on the phone to when you connect USB. I use the option that recognizes the phone as a media player. - Media Sync (MTP)
This is what works for me, and I use it as mass storage.

Look up how to adb push and pull. You will never need to be bothered by MTP again.
i agree that is a solution.
but its not for everyone, especially my relative who just want an easy plug and play options
also manage to help her switch tio ubuntu for most pc needs. therefore MTP is aoutof the question.
right now, my short term solution is an ftp server
however this has its limitations. like need 2 be connected o the same network.
still hoping the nest upgrade or custom rom will implement usb mass storage mode
yeah for some reason ICS did away with mass storage in favor of MTP, i think. OSX unfortunately doesnt MTP, so you need to download the 'Android File Transfer' app onto your laptop and then do it through there.

Difficulty enabling USB data transfer on Android 12 tablet

I just bought a Lazmin112 FHD 1920x1080, 32GB , 7inch Android 12 tablet although it appears to be some kind of wholesale thing that's available from literally dozens of different retailers. If it helps it shows up as a Model number P50 under About tablet.
This is my first exposure to Android 12 so I'm not sure whether I'm seeing differences in Android 12 from Android 11 or if the differences are specific to this tablet.
The bottom line is that I can't connect to the device via usb, the PC can't see the usb data space nor does adb list any devices attached.
I've enabled Developer options but many of the controls I'm familiar with are not present. I've enabled USB debugging but there is no default USB usage setting or any other USB related setting other than USB debugging.
The documentation, such as it exists, merely says "USB just only be used for data transmission".
Does anyone have any kind of clue as to how to deal with this?
You could try swiping down to get to the notifications area and tap on the "Connected as media device" notification and then changing it to PTP mode. That sometimes works for USB debugging.
There are various reasons why your Android device is not able to transfer data. Though Android File Transfer is an effective application for transferring data, the restrictions limit the activities. Mac doesn't support media transfer protocol (MTP) for transferring files from Android to Mac. So, it is essential to install Android File Transfer on your Mac to transfer files from Android to Mac. When Android File Transfer could not connect to the device, you might find that Android File Transfer is not working properly.
Here are the common reasons leading to unresponsive Android File Transfer on your Mac:
The file transfer feature is not enabled on your Android mobile/tablet.
Your USB cable is defective.
Your Android device or Mac computer is not compatible with Android File Transfer.
Your Mac's USB port got damaged.
You have installed Samsung Kies or Samsung Smart Switch on your Mac.
Regards,
J Wick
Thanks for the input.
As it turned out I was using the cable that came with the tablet and apparently it's either damaged or more likely it's a charging only cable because as soon as I used another cable I did finally get the connected as media device notification and was able to view the file structure from the PC.
Thanks again.
