Non-removable battery - Dealbreaker? - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hey all,
There doesnt appear to be a topic specifically on this(I have searched) so I have to ask.
Does this cripple the phone for you?
My personal situation:
Have an x10i
Long time SE user
Planning on upgrading in the next month
The two cons with this phone for me are the lack of an SD slot, and the battery. With google music and the like I can totally deal with the SD failing. But the battery, its got me totally conflicted. Ruining a dream phone. I've had several SE phones and their programming isnt great. Even just the other day my X10 crashed twice and I had to pull the battery. This is what worries me.

No and no
The phone has built in reset button combinations (hard-coded so will always work). I don't see other than that, why the battery thing is a problem Unless you plan on keeping the phone for a very long time (read: to the point where the battery cant hold a charge) it's not worth losing sleep over. There's a few threads on how to remove the battery I believe as well, and by then your warranty will be up anyways, so who cares if you unscrew the back .
The no SD thing is also not a problem with the amount of internal memory available + USB OTG support

Ah jaysis, there were big rants about this on another forum and there was ZERO mention of the fact that it had a hardcoded reset.
*waits for burfday cash so he can run to the shop*
Thanks.

1st. The 32gb seams to do me at mo (may not be good for app hoarders) at the end of day the battery will die before watch 1 season of (e.g family guy) or half way through 1 good space hungry sd using game, so why do you need it full up. 2nd. Batt is not a problem unless you carry spares around with you. Hard reset = (power button and vol up) works same as pulling the batt out. this was my same worrie when read about it myself at first.

well, i forced a bootloop to test the "hard shutdown" and it works

Think about the HTC X devices, they are only coming with 16gb and dropbox as backup.

That's the one s. The one x has 32gb, just like xperia s.
About the sd card slot. I really don't miss it. 32gb is more than enough memory for me. In my old phone (htc desire) I had a 32gb sd card and never took it out of the phone. If you need some removeable memory for whatever reason usb on the go will do, but I doubt I will ever need it.
The the battery. Well running around with spares is not something I ever did. I usually just bring a charger or usb cable if I'm away from home for a while. If you are in places where you have no access to power, you could allways buy an external charger. That would basically do the same job as extra batteries. If you're worried the battery may wear out over time: it is removeable if you unscrew the back. So It can be replaced if needed.

Yes, the X has 32, same as us. Given how much stuff I have installed I would think I would have less space, my 4S was a 32gb and it was mostly full with half the apps and a few more pics and videos.
+1 about the charger, I have some old Nokia N882/N95 micro USB cables that I use as backup and might even buy:
http://www.obostore.com/2000mah-hbt-micro-usb-portable-power-bank-charger-p-4232-c-103.html
as a backup battery option.

PLEASE HELP!!!! distressed hd2 owner with dying phone

i dropped my phone in the gym changing rooms today and i think that is the reason it won't charge any more ):
my beautiful HD2 is dead ):
i can't take it to T-Mobile because i have a custom ROM on it and it would void the warranty and they wouldn't fix it
and i can't put a standard ROM back on because you need to charge your phone over 50% battery!!!
all i simply ask is that someone near me could maybe lend me a battery or their own battery so i can have enough power to flash a standard ROM back on so i can take it to a T-Mobile shop and get this problem sorted out, it would really help alot.
it's been dead 10 mins and i am lost without it.
seriously, anyone from
cambusnethan > wishaw > north lanarkshire > lanarkshire > scotland
fancy helping me out?
dude, sorry to hear about the issue!
but you should know that the 50% battery requirement is only applicable if you are flashing via the usb cable while your device is in windows. however, you can still flash (via the usb cable or using the "sd card method") by placing your phone in "boot loader mode". this by passes the 50% battery check, so its worth a shot if you have enough battery, like say about 20%...i guess it would be a bit dangerous if your battery is below 10% because the flash might get interrupted if the battery runs out, further compounding your problem.
i personally recommend the "sd card method" for flashing a stock rom because this will revert BOTH your custom rom as well as your hardspl back to stock state in one go! and i believe that is exactly what you want!

thanks for replying,
yeah i read before flashing from sd card wipes hspl and i've done it before too but right now my main battery is dead and the spare (ebay knock off, hd2 fake battery) is sitting about 20% i think
not sure if i should put it in to risk it?
also, because its fake, it's got about 4/5ths the battery life of the real hd2 one :/
at 20% of a real battery you should be able to flash a half dozen times easy.

the main battery is dead, it's the spare cheap ebay one that still has about 20%
it drains faster than the normal one.
yea, what i meant was it should be good for at least 1 or two flashes. just dont let the phone sit in bootloader any longer than you have to, it seems to chew through power, being on teh bootloader screen. (i do all my flashing from bootloader, never really monitored it, just a feeling.)
if ur not in a rush just buy a battery charger that will charge externally and alternate between batteries. looks like there are some on ebay for under 10.00. just throwing out another option.
thanks for your reply, i would buy another spare battery or charger but i am broke.
i am a student, i'm not exaggerating but i couldn't afford to pay 10

You're a student, you're broke and yet you afford a 400-500GBP device...
Anyway, you're a student??? THINK.
Look around you, realise you are surrounded by 200-1000 broke students with the latest expansive mobile phone.
Ask them randomly or ask your student association to ask around.
End of problems

Phone shopping advice

I'm picking up a new phone from at&t tomorrow. The choices are the Samsung SG3 and the XO +. I've read the reviews, and after weighing the pros/cons and factoring in the price difference, I'm stumped. Does anyone have any hands on experience they can give me?

Personally HOX+ hands down. SG3 dual core vs. HOX+ quad core + 1, really no comparison. Only thing the SG3 has on the HOX+ is the 2gb of ram and sd card slot i believe it has in the USA version. I played with the SG3 in the store as before i knew anything about the HOX+ i was thinking to get it over the new iphone 5. Thing looks and feels like a cheap piece of plastic and not liking it at all and the dull colors the screen produces. Really personally preference on your part but if going off the specs along the HOX+ hands down imo at least.
Walk into the ATT store tomorrow and be the first to play with the HOX+ in the store and i think instantly you will make your mind up .

I see people complaining so much about removable batteries but unless you live in the stone age, how and when are you not near a wall jack to plug your phone in? I always have my device on the charger while i sleep so i start the day with a fresh charge, i work a desk job in an office so all day at work i can always plug it in if needed, then at home obviously i can plug it in if needed. Unless you're a world back packing traveler, who and why would you carry around 2+ spare batteries with you? lol, never understood that stuff?

Agreed. The only time I've ever found a removable battery useful is when a phone is locked up and I need to yank the battery out to fix it.

Battery pull on S3 for hard reset is same as holding power button for about 10 seconds on One X, yields same results and cold boots device
Sent from my One X using xda premium
An advantage of a phone with a removable battery is when the battery starts to deteriorate after maybe 3 years. With SGS3, you just buy a spare battery, pop it in and you're good to go. With HOX+, you'll have to take it to a service center and dissect the thing to have the battery replaced, and pay a service fee. Who knows if the phone will still feel as solid after tearing it up and putting it all back together. That said, I am still for the HOX+. Just something to consider if you're keeping the phone for a while.

Well of course but who the heck holds onto the same device for 3+ years, lol? Not matter how cutting edge your current device is (this for example for the time being as in today, who knows about tomorrow), in a few months and for sure in a year your device will be outdated even with the latest software upgrades and you'll be drooling over the next best thing. Longest i've ever kept a device was 2yrs and that was the Iphone 4 when it first came out. Only reason why i held out so long is because i didn't like the S3 at all and had high hopes for the Iphone 5 which is a joke compared to what's out now. 3 years, that's crazy talk my friend

I guess it depends upon one's lifestyle. I also charge my phone all night but during the day I am constantly moving. If I get to 20% by 5pm and then need to go out I like to have a spare battery in my pocket or briefcase. Also using the phone as a gps or tethering, which I do during the day, tends to drain the battery more than standby or talking. I spend a lot of time in airports and always see the poor folks gathered around the charging stands or wired to outlets in the floor. I don't have that problem if I have a couple of spare batteries charged. I can use the phone in the airport then on the plane. It takes 30 seconds to change a battery compared to hours to charge. Battery life is irrelevant if you can just replace them when they are dead, it doesn't matter if you get 12 hours or 24. At $4 each you can carry as may spares as you need.
But unfortunately it seems that the SG3 is the last top tier phone with a removable battery. The hox+, LG Optimus G, Sony Experia TL, and the Nokia Lumia 920 all have embedded batteries. Regardless I may end up with a hox+ and have to change the habits that I have developed since 2005. Maybe I will carry one of those AA battery recharging gadgets as a security blanket.

[Q] Galaxy note screen wont come on

I recently took apart my galaxy note to replace the power jack. After i put it all together, the screen will not come on. The phone is on and will be recognized my a computer. The capacitive touch lights come on and haptic feedback functions when they are used. But the screen wont come on.
Were do i go from here.
You will likely need to take the device apart again, and re-trace your steps...
Chances are, you have a bad connection to the digitizer screen, and as you know, those connections are "very" small, and are easily damaged or connected improperly.
There really is no other choice, than to inspect the areas you worked on....g

A little more information, I have the device apart right now.
I bought a used Note off of craigslist that had a broken screen and a bad SIM card slot. I transplanted that motherboard into my phone and the screen powers on. But with my motherboard it does not.
What should I look for specifically when inspecting the ribbon connections
That they are connected completely.

Checked,
Phone reassembled completely, still nothing on screen.
Now what.
UPDATE: Motherboard wont power either screen. The bad motherboard will power both.
What is the defect, on the board that powers both screens ?
It's beginning to sound as if you now have two bad mother boards ?
Or at least, a partially working board.
Either way, the device is still broken....ouch
It may come down to taking the device for repair, or trying to find yet another board.
At this point, getting a complete and working device may be in order, as risking more time and money on devices for parts, isn't working out ..
I'm sorry, I don't have any further advice for you at this point ....g
First, you need to differentiate what you mean by "bad" motherboard, cuz it sounds like both motherboards are "bad" in some way.
Your first motherboard is not powering screen, but everything else works. Correct?
Your second motherboard, bought online with bad SIM slot, powers screen, but cannot be used with the bad SIM slot. Correct?
It sounds like your first MB has issues for screen, which is obvious, because the screen works with the second MB.
Then, you may try to replace the SIM slot on the second MB. I think figuring out the problem with the first MB will be exponentially harder, let alone fixing it.
Or, just sell EVERYTHING you have and pony up some cash and buy a working phone, instead of trying to fix this thing. Since your MB is recognized by PC, you can still save all your data.
Agreed ..g

Yes, I apologize. Let me clarify.
Motherboard #1: Does not power screen, but works fine otherwise.
Motherboard #2: Will not read SIM or microSD cards, but powers screens just fine.
I looked into what replacing the SIM and microSD system on the motherboard. Its very difficult.
On the sell EVERYTHING front. I recently sold a set of Rims I had for my car. By some miracle, I was eligible for an upgrade with AT&T. Galaxy Note II ordered.
But, if I can get a spare phone working. Id still like to fix this one.
In my opinion ....
Dump them as parts devices ....
In another few months, these devices will be selling cheap ....imho
Note 3 is already being developed, and the 1 will be rolling off the back end by August/September 2013.
I saw one for sale in Utah today for $125.00
So it's already begun ....IMHO ....g

Just go this phone today! Any recommendations you want to share?

Hi!
Well, first the phone is not for myself but I will send it to my mom as her nokia died and I wanted a better phone with a bigger screen.
I almost went with a LG L9 4.5" but the bigger internal memory, faster CPU and better camera features on the Amaze made me change my mind.
So, I was thinking maybe I need to root it to remove anything that slows it down but in reality, mom is not a power user. I will just have her do MMS now so maybe is not worth spending time figuring out a new system (I come from Samsung, Asus Prime, Xperia) for a user that really is not going to notice any lag etc.
I got it with a 5 pin cable which seems NOT to be the right one and charges slow so one thing I am getting is an OEM 12 pin for it unless I am not right about this.
So anything you like to share, I am happy to read about.
Thanks!

Yes the 12 pin is better, but unless you've got the factory charger, go for a quality higher amperage one like the generic dual purpose type that can be used with a tablet. These beasts draw a lot of current, so much so that when plugged-in and used with a lesser charger, it will still be draining its battery.
Even though it's for your mom I'd still root it and install Titanium Backup. Then I'd remove the T-Mobile and HTC bloat, some of which never worked, or no longer works. Then after removing the cruft, I'd install every available update then integrate them into '/system/app' with TiBu. Finally, I'd unroot and relock it, to avoid the late night service calls she'd give you if she accidentally messed with something she shouldn't have. Then you'll be good to go.
I did this very same procedure when I hooked my mom and stepdad up with smartphones last year. They both were new to these devices. They previously owned moto RAZRs. They live outside of Memphis and I live in Miami. The one thing I feared in getting them Androids vs iPhones were the possible late night tech calls from them. So I did for them exactly what I told you and they've been happy owners ever since.
I hope this helps.
Ciao
That sounds like a good plan.
Any specific charger you recommend or anything listed for HTC tablets etc should do the trick from ebay?
Looks like THIS should work.

It should work. I bought my amaze off Craig's list after I broke my HD2. I got it relatively cheap ($100), but it had no charger or data cable. I thought no big deal, I'll just use the HD2's. Thats when I discovered how much this juice uses. The HD2 charger just wasn't up to the task. I kept getting warnings about the current draw being too much and the device was unable to charge.
I wanted to resolve that right away. So I went to Best Buy and overpaid for a generic one with the highest amperage output they had. It's rated at 2.4 amps, I think my old one was rated at 0.8. You don't have to worry about too much amperage because of the regulator in the phone. Plus by getting the one I did, I figured I'd be equipped for any type of device I might throw at it in the future. That in combination with the 12 pin cable has worked for me. Now I can do even the most intensive task while plugged in and it never gives me a warning anymore about my device being unable to charge. I hope this helps, good luck!
The charger I got is rated like the original 5v 1Amp but the cable is surely not doing the job. Still I will just get that charger and call it a day.
Thanks amigo!

Data recovery from a dead CPU?

Greetings,
The device was water-damaged, battery + screen + Charger IC were replaced, and it worked for 2 days.
During the 2 days, the charging was very slow. And it consumed 2-4 times the ampers it stored (I can tell by charging from a power bank with % indicator ) - a rough estimate.
I left it on the charger, at around 70% charged, left for a few minutes, and went back to see it completely dead.
4 days from a technician to another, no one was able to boot it up. Their final conclusion was that the CPU is damaged. And the device is non-fixable.
I heard that if the CPU was damaged then the internal memory is lost, too. And that I can't change the CPU while keeping the old memory as if they are digitally signed.
Assuming that the CPU was actually damaged, what are my chances of recovering data? Is it true that the CPU is irreplaceable (while keeping the internal memory) ?
Btw, according to them, there were no visible signs of burnt ICs.
The device in question is Mate 10 Pro, but I don't see a dedicated forum for it so I am posting here.
Regards.

You can probably buy a broken screen mate 10 pro online really cheap. As long as motherboard works all good, then send it a repair shop that does micro soldering and have them remove nand chip from the dead motherboard and transfer it over to the new one..
Cross fingers and hope that it will work alright which idk if it will...
The chances are that it likely won't lol . I'm not sure if chip might need reprogramming, whether it's paired to the CPU or whether you'd have to swap over some other parts as well.
It's likely gonna be really costly to do this. 50$ maybe for a new motherboard but expect 200/300$ at least for labor involved. Plus not every micro soldering shop even has the right tools necessary for all of this.
You're looking at 350$ + without even knowing whether it'll work or not in the end.
