[Q] HDMI Output and Replacement Parts - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

I've looked through the forum and can't find at least the HDMI question I have, so new post.
1) I purchased a HDMI cable to use with the TP as I would like to use it as a player for those things the Boxee Box can't handle yet (Hulu Plus, Netflix would be nice too if it does 5.1). When i hook it up to my TV I get a picture at 720p, but then it seems at though my tablet doesn't respond to any input. If I touch the back button I can get it to back, but I get the same behavior if I touch the middle of the screen too. It's almost like the calibration is messed up if I have it output to TV. I've turned it up to performance mode and same issue. If I unplug the cable I can use the TP again as before. We have 2 TPs and they both give the same issue, though one responds slightly better than the other.
2) A few weeks ago we were getting ready to leave, and in the mists of getting the kids buckled in the TP was left on top of the car. It fell and we didn't know where it was until we got a call later that night from the person who found it and was able to locate us. We thought he was being a good samaritan (who returns a $500 tablet, right?) until we later looked and discovered that he had tried to pry it open, probably to try to reseat the screen as it probably popped out from the impact. Right now only half the screen works, with the other half just a bunch of colored lines (though the touchscreen part still works perfectly...it takes a couple of tries to unlock it).
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew where I may get a new screen? ASUS just got back to me and I haven't contacted them yet, but I was hoping I could see what prices may be for a replacement before calling them and seeing what they would charge.

touch screen "kinda" failure?

well i have an odd problem, one one section of my screen doesn't pick up touches, only the area where the "C" is on the keyboard...its annoying due to thats where the OK buttons are...
i can still navigate sense i can use the track ball..
anyone else have this issue, or something similar?
Try wiping back to factory if stock or reflash the rom if rooted?
I had a weird issue with the touch screen on condemned 18.3 where on the lockscreen trying to drawdown the slider and then draw the pattern, it would freak out and glitch and not follow my finger at all and take several tries to get the pattern correct.
I then wiped and flashed the latest 4.0 GSB and haven't had any issues since.
That's not quite a touch screen failure as yours is, but I thought it would help as an example as something gone wrong and how I was able to remedy it.
i've tried flashing a few different roms, went from cs18.3 to a 2.1 sense rom, back to the latest gsb. it appears its must be a problem with the digitizer...
really sucks, i have to wait to april to upgrade this phone...
might be on craigslist looking for a cheap droid 1...
Ah man, that's unfortunate. Probably wouldn't be worth it to try to replace the screen/digitizer either. Yeah, that's probably your best bet, looking to get another phone. That's how I got my Eris, from craigslist. Great way to go about doing so.
Good luck to ya.
I actually have the same problem and something leads me to believe that an update is causing this. I had it bad a few weeks ago (can't press C, V or X - though I can swipe to the keys sometimes) and then I got a few market updates for Handcent, SuperUser, and something else which then cleared it up for a few days. Then I got more updates and it's back to the failing keyboard!
I really don't know how to pin point it and I haven't done any resetting or testing yet, but I have like gut feeling something is wrong with the software, not the touchscreen since someone else is having this problem.
Mine has been failing little by little. Im now down to the top right corner, bottom left, and bottom middle not responding. It hard to even get the apps drawer to open. It all started with the letter C with me too. Just gets worse.
****, my whole qwerty row doesn't work, neither does the trackball. Upgraded to a SGS2, but I still tinker with the ol' eris.
mine moved, it started working fine for a few days, then just a smaller section to the left of C doesn't work, only really effects when i have an "OK" to press...but track ball still works and typing is so much easier now.
my wife thinks its because i dropped my phone that it started working again
I know this thread is a couple of months old, but...
There's an area on mine at the top right below the notification pull-down that appears to be dead. I'm thinking it's because I've dropped it about 10 times, but nothing looks wrong with the screen otherwise. I've thought about buying a replacement screen for about 15 bucks, but I'll be able to upgrade at the end of March, so I'm really just thinking about holding off (though if the new screen/digitizer worked, it'd make for a good mp3 player with the wifi script).
Digitizer is going bad. Same exact problem happened to mine. I replaced it myself and it works perfect. I found how to videos on youtube and bought a digitizer for about $37 online. Only took a half hour to tear apart and replace. On the difficulty level, I'd give it a 6 or 7.

YMMV.
Someone gave me an Eris that had digitizer problems along the lower left side of the screen (in portrait orientation). I bought a replacement digitizer ($22 iirc), installed it, and it worked perfectly - for about the first 30 minutes. Then, the problem re-appeared in exactly the same location with the new digitizer.
Same behavior for a variety of stock or developer ROMs, so highly doubtful that it was a "software problem". Very very odd - the chip that does the capacitive sensing is on the flex circuit attached to the digitizer, so it gets replaced when you replace the digitizer; I suppose that the signals that come off the mini-connector between the digitizer assembly and the phone's mobo are only power, ground, and I2C signals.
But there you go; taken all those observations together, I'd suspect that I had a problem on the phone's motherboard which was thermally dependent.
Despite my (negative) experience, the odds are still in favor that a digitizer replacement will fix the problem; but there is an outside chance that it won't.
just sayin',

Screen on my Pime is dead, what are my options?

The other day, I went to turn on my Prime and the screen didn't come one, so I thought the battery was dead. But even after charging it overnight, the screen still didn't come on, so I took a closer look and figured out that the tablet is powered on, but the screen is entirely black.
I know it's on because it makes the tone when you plug in or remove the power cable, and when I connected it via USB to my Win7 machine, it immediately installed the drivers and correctly identified it as a Transformer Prime.
So basically I have a running tablet with a black screen; no boot animations or text, just nothing. I would assume it's a hardware problem rather than software, unless anyone out there has a better idea.
I bought it used on Ebay, so I know I'm probably SOL in regard to warranty, but will Asus fix it for a fee? Or is there a market for mostly-bricked tablets out there?
Thanks
Hmmmm...motherboard could have died. I'd at least check with Asus, but barring that id open it first to make sure the LCD ribbon inside never came off.
As a final option you could let someone with a busted LCD but working prime try it out.
Have a look at the post by youngnex in the RMA Question thread.

I'd say send it in and see what they say. But then I'm biased as I bought mine on eBay too and want to know! Lol
Seriously, though, for $20 I'd send it in to see.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda app-developers app
Cool, thanks for the info. A loose cable would explain it, but I'm not too keen on opening it up. I'll look around for instructions on how to do it, but if it seems over my head I guess I'll try to send it back and see how it goes.

Might want to start here:

Have you actually tried to reboot it by holding down the power button for 10s? My i9000 sometimes does this and a reboot always fixes it.
So, the screen doesn't light up at all? Not even any edge lighting?
In that situation, I'd be connecting it via HDMI cable to an external HDMI screen. You'll need to get a micro-HDMI adapter in order to do this. You can get them from monoprice.com pretty cheap ($2ish).
Opening your prime isn't hugely difficult. There's videos on the internet on how to do it. The real key to opening it is that there are locks that hold the screen down that you need to slide open -- they're under the rubber stoppers that cover the docking station holes.
Now, changing the LCD is a HUGE, difficult pain.
Yes, I've tried to reboot it with a long power hold. I get the quick vibrate after about 10 seconds, but nothing at all on the screen.
It does sound like it might be just the LCD ribbon, so maybe I'll try to open it up this weekend.
For the sake of future Googlers, I wanted to post an update saying that I went ahead and opened it using the instructions linked in the post above, and was able to re-seat one of the ribbon cables, and everything works fine now. Thanks to everyone for the help.

BAH! I DROPPED IT! How to diagnose?

So after my daily workout (watching "Breaking Bad" on the tablet) I managed to let my trusty 201 slip from my hands while taking it off the thin little ledge on my exercise bike console.
BAM, landed right on its corner on the bike's steel support bar.
Now it appears to be functional - except for the small point that the screen don't come on anymore.
Since I cleverly just put a "pattern" lock on it before maiming the poor thing, I can't get it unlocked reliably, but when I press the screenshot button on the keyboard it makes the shutter-click sound.
And I am getting notification bleeps when new mail comes in.
But I'm blind.
I have taken some steps in the past to open it, I did the Wifi antenna thing and tried to get the GPS working (bahahaha what a waste of time THAT was!)... and I've repaired a number of other phones and crap... so I'm not unskilled in this arena.
And I'm sort of optimistically hoping it's just a loose cable or something. There's only the smallest dent in the casing in the corner. No cracks in the screen or anything.
But has anyone gone down this road and maybe has some pointers as to what to look out for? Is there a backlight module that might have popped and just needs replacing?
I'm very sad, this little guy has been my stalwart companion for many, many moons...
Thanks for any input.

I have read some similar stories in the past and some times it has just been a cable that has dislodged inside.. Obviously this can vary but I would first try plugging in a hdmi cable to your TV and making sure that the graphics chip is still working.
I'd imagine it would be and your next step would be to open it up and start unplugging and replugging everything you can.

Aha! The hdmi cable. Hadn't occurred to me.
I love this forum.
(Also been using androwook for quite some time, with Data2SD... big fan - very smooth. would hate to lose and/or have to reinstall from scratch though!)

Well - this was a fantastic suggestion, since the HDMI gave me a perfect picture and the thing is (as thought) fully functional.
It was interesting trying to judge where to tap on the tablet to hit certain things on the screen, though.
This is actually quite a load off, since worst case I can get a new screen from ebay.
Thanks again, flumpster - I am much relieved, and you are a god among men!

This is for the original transformer but they should be nearly the same.

Nice!
I have my fingers crossed.
So do my kids, who are going into "Minecraft PE" withdrawal at the moment.
Well, after popping the case, I've disconnected and reconnected everything available - no change in behavior.
I'll try unsticking the LCD and see what else is in there, but it's looking like a more aggressive repair will be in order.

PS there's also this vid I found: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpJs_OI8joA
Arright. Here's my logic. Tell me where I'm wrong.
The video works - the HDMI proved that.
The tablet works - ditto.
Being able to touch and use the tablet shows me that the digitizer is ok, too.
I've reseated all the connectors, but I still can't get a picture.
Therefore, it's the LCD that's gone bad.
Therefore I should order a new LCD.
Right?

Hmmm.. Sounds logical but it could be the power going to the screen or something else that connects the screen. Or does the power etc control the digitizer also ?

Well, there's one (and only one) ribbon cable feeding the LCD - and two going to the digitizer.
News, though - I pulled out the battery and found another ribbon cable tucked underneath to reseat.
After that, I put it back in and hooked up the LCD - and it came up!!
Sort of, anyway. It lit up enough to show me the spiderweb of cracks all along the bottom edge.
(I think I found my problem.)
Now off to eBay to shop for a replacement... I hope I didn't munge up anything else in there while I was mucking around!

See if someone is selling a bricked Tf201 of TF300 that you can get the screen out of.

G5 Screen fail. Digitizer fine, but display dead? WTH?

Got a unique issue with my G5. Have had it in a Lifeproof case for awhile now.
Last night, it spent most of the time riding in my back jeans pocket where it always does. I've had zero issues with sitting in the car, and whatnot....as I'm not a hipster that wears tight jeans that could possibly damage the device. Anywho, I got out of the car, dropped the phone into my pocket, and went about my evening at work - which involved ZERO sitting.
I go to pull out the device to make a call, verify my fingerprint, and nothing. Well, almost nothing. Its as if half of my screen is "disconnected", and the other half is out of sync. I've attached a youtube video to see what I'm talking about. ( https://youtu.be/357GcnV2-9Y ) My first thought was the ribbon cable became partially dislodged from its plug on the motherboard. I first tried flexing the phone, to see if it magically worked, or changed. Nada.
This am, brought it to the VZW store, expecting a quick fix, but since it shows no damage at all I got nothing but a warranty replacement request, and a promise it would be delivered within 3 days. Thats not good enough, as I use this thing for work. So I looked at alternatives...
I've browsed the teardown on ifixit, and was surprised at its simplicity. I pulled it apart, and re-seated the display ribbon cable, to no avail. Still apparently toast.
I've managed to get through the boot up pattern security I set up, and the phone is active. I just cant get it into MTP mode to copy my crap as I'm guessing I need to pull down and click on the notification to switch it.....which, of course, I cannot see. Basically, I just want to get my crap out of the internal storage before I ship this one back. Obviously I'm going to wipe it with the Android Device Manager before I deactivate, but still would like to salvage something.
Anybody have any thoughts? Or maybe is there a second ribbon cable somewhere that wasnt mentioned in the teardown?

I have no advice as to how to get your files off, I'm sorry about that.
But I wanted to confirm that this isn't an isolated occurrence and it happened to me! I also babied my phone and never dropped it and it was always in a case.
I don't know what to blame as the cause, I'm hoping just bad quality control. I was hoping it's not due to flexing because it's not as sturdy due to the bottom of the phone not being physically attached.
Photos of the same thing on mine: https://imgur.com/a/eEAmA
This happened 15 days after I bought it and Best Buy returned it for a new one which three weeks later started bootlooping which was a whole fiasco to get repaired and took over a month. LG's quality control is horrible.
+1 as I am having this issue on a Sprint G5, sent to LG for repair after Sprint was no help. 29 days after purchase.
Hello. A few quick searches on my part found a thread here on the forums for controlling your device from your PC. It also includes a script to run when your phone is in recovery to enable USB Debugging. Try it out ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2786395 ). Hopefully I have helped. If you want to just salvage files, you can enable USB Debugging and pull everything through the USB. However, if you want to still use your apps, or harvest app data, or even use titanium backup or the like to make a complete backup to transfer to the new device, enable USB Debugging, then control your phone. Follow the above thread's instructions to do so.
Thank you for your time,

LG V60 ThinkQ Dual screen problems?

I hopped on the T-MO B1G1 deal with my brother and after a week of trying things out, we noticed every now and then our dual screen (when both screens are active) the left one glitches. Does anyone have that problem? See picture attachment for an idea. In a nutshell, this only happens when I have both screens active and multi-tasking at times where the left screen will get a glitchy lighting error.
The glitch is either a quick shut off and turn on with the left screen or it quickly changes the left screen to be bright and colorful as shown in the picture.
If anyone ran into this problem and know how to fix it, please share it! My brother's LG v60 doesn't get this dual-screen glitch as often, only once or twice for him while I'm getting it almost everyday. I'm hoping to avoid another format, I'm wondering if it's an app or setting that is not compatible with dual screen.
Thanks
*Looks like I can't post a picture yet until I get more posts in.*
Your unit is defected. Contact t-mobile for a replacement. There are videos on youtube of a few users with the same experience.
I myself haven't had issues, I've had it for a week now
Had mine since march 25th and no issues either.
Here is the video on youtube about one reviewer with a 2nd display issue

Thanks for all the replies! It happened to my bro's LG V60 today again and so we are pretty sure both of our dual screen is defected.
I'll try with LG Promise warranty to see if I can get a replacement dual screen first, hopefully they can take care of it faster than T-Mobile. T-mobile has been giving me ****ty customer service lately, so hopefully LG can make it right.
Thanks all.
Now normally TMobile will overnight a device if you have insurance. If you don't have insurance it's a 3-5 day wait for a replacement
Wide-mode app part of this?
I ran into this with my AT&T velvet. LG replaced it and it's been working for the past week.
Question: Did you install the wide-mode for LG app? I was wondering if that might have done something to some bit of memory somewhere. It didn't claim to support the Velvet but I tried it anyway. I don't remember if that's when it started acting up. I factory-reset the phone to see if that helped but the problem kept re-occurring. I emailed the app's author but got no reply.
I figured I'd ask. I'd like to re-install the app but don't want to possibly mess things up.
Thanks,
Frank
I got the phone over the weekend and mines glitches often i when back to t mobile and they replaced my dual screen and yet again with in a hour it still glitching

I had to have my dual screen replaced. The screen would just turn green and fade out. Lg sent it in less than a week. There's no reason to resort to things like tape or stuff. All V60s are still under warranty. Just send the screen part back to lg and they will replace it.

I'm in the same boat, and used the same solution. I have a thin metal disc that mates with a magnet to use as a stand, mount the phone, etc. (IM Stick). Installing that disc at the very bottom of the case gave the USB C connector just what it needed to mate correctly. Bonus: No interference with wireless charging!
