Want to install CM7 , should i get 2 SD card or just one ? I am on 1.4.1 - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Since i am on 1.4.1 , i couldnt able to root via .apk installation method , which is blocked on 1.4.1
Today i am going to purchase a microSD card to root and install CM7 or CM9 (anything other than stock ROM). Many tutorials i read says that i have to format the SD card to make it as bootable Rooter or something. My question is
- Do i need 2 SD cards , one to root and another as external storage ?
- Or 1 is enough to root and install , then later reformat it to use it as external storage for nook ?
- Which method / tutorial should i follow ? CM7 threads says to look at rooting and CMW installation threads . But these thread are little confusing me on SD card part.
Can anyone give an idea on how to proceed ? Again i am on 1.4.1 , unrooted , STOCK ROM and dont have a microSD card yet , going to buy today , so how much should i buy or 1 is enough to get me on CM7
Need urgent reply , as i am leaving to buy stuffs

I think there's only one micro sd port, so you'll only want to get one micro sd. There's no reason to get two. Just get the largest one you can buy. That's what I did. 32GB micro sd with CM7 installed. Afterward you'll need to run a partition program to resize the last partition to use up the entire space of the card. I ran into a little issue with that with windows partition program and have to boot ubuntu and run gparted.

I've rooted, booted in recovery, stored apps and media, flashed different mods and roms, and booted another NT into recovery all from the same 32gb card. Hope that answers your question. i personally wouldn't go with anything less than 16gb of space just due to the fact that anything else seems a bit of a waste of the sd card slot. IMO not the law

One sd card is sufficient for rooting the device. It really depends on how you want to root it now, internally (so you can use the internal memory but lose stock os) or bootable sd card (easier to revert but everything will be stored on the sd card)

Thanks for all the reply. Had some work come up , so didnt find time.
anyway got a 8GB card, is that enough ? i am not planning to watch movies on it.
I am planning to give this nook to my brother later , so i dont want to mess up with the stock OS. Can i root/install cm7 right from the SD card itself ? and if i remove , will the stock OS be intact ?
Also please let me know how to revert (once rooted/installed and if it did change the internal stock OS) back to stock OS.
With SD card , can i skip the registration process of stock OS ? recently i restored to factory setting , and i dont want it to update OTA to 1.4.1 and above if i am again going to go through the process . the device has not been turned on for a while.
help me here guys

You should make a CM7 SD card, directions can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481826
This way, when you put the SD card in and boot up, you will boot into CM7.
When you take the SD card out and boot up, you will boot into the untouched Barnes and Noble stock ROM.

After you write the .img to your card and after you extend the last partition of your SD card, you should have about 5.5GB for user data storage.
I don't believe you have to register your NT.
To be on the safe side, I would definitely recommend that you use an SD adapter when writing the image, but you should be able to do it when the card is inside of your NT, but mounted on your computer.

thanks a lot. its midnight now , will try it first thing tomorrow

Alright, come back if you run into any problems.

I am just downloading the image file.
Planning to skip the registration process with that trick and load the sd card > connect it to system and burn the image on the SD card.
Hope it works

I skipped the registration process and inserted the SD card and currently running the disk imager to write that image file to h: (SD CARD)
hope i am doing it right.

It worked !!!!!
here is the storage details :
SD CARD
total : 1.3GB
Avail :1.3GB
Internal :
Total : 1.3
Avail : 1.17
Additional storage : /system
unvailable
Additional Storage : mnt/storage
Unvailable
Additional storage : /mnt/media
T : 1GB
A : 1GB
ok how to extend the partition now ? Also is there anything i should remember regarding these mnt/storage and /media ? I mean moving apps , stuffs like that ?

Okay, so the 4th partition is the only partition you want to change. If running Windows, download and install either:
Minitool Partition Wizard: http://www.partitionwizard.com/download.html
OR
EASEUS Partition Master: http://www.partition-tool.com/download.htm
Doesn't matter which, they're basically the same software.
Mount the SD card and remember the letter drive for your SD card (very important!)
You should see 4 partitions on your SD card drive, followed by unallocated space. Select the 4th partition and choose Move/Resize. From here you should be able to extend that partition to consume the rest of the unallocated space.
Now, double check to make sure the changes you made to your SD card are correct. When you are satisfied, hit Apply, and wait for the changes to take place.
When it's finished close to software and mount the SD card on your NT and check the storage settings again to make sure you are able to use the rest of your space.

As you know , i have been using nook to mount the SD card. Will this work with my setting ?
also when i try to mount this is what it shows

Open up one of the partitioning softwares and make sure your J: Drive has 4 partitions on it. If not, then you'll need to mount your SD card on the PC with an adapter or card reader.

i cant figure it out. I mounted and it is showing this . And J: is shown as BAD DISK
may be i should use an adapter.. or am i doing something wrong ?
sorry for the delay in replying , i am on a slow speed net and taking screenshot , editing takes some time.

Try using an SD reader or adapter. It should solve this problem.

will buy and try it.
meanwhile , is there any way i can install B&N reader ? i am outside of U.S .

The Nook app is available in the Play Store.
If you mean the Barnes and Noble stock reading app, I believe you can extract the app from the stock ROM. The app is simply called Reader, and should be listed in /system/app.

Changing SD Cards - How to copy apps.

Right - I've rooted my Hero ( RA-Recover ), and have flashed Modaco 2.2 Rom. I've moved my apps onto my 2 gig d cad with AppstoSD.
Now I want to replace my sd card with a larger capacity one - 8gig.
So how do I get all my apps from the old card onto the new one??
Is it a case of copying all the apps back to the phone from the old card ( Sort of AppstSD in reverse )? If so, how do you do that?
cheers
Mount the card on the desktop of your Mac/PC via the USB cable.
Copy the whole contents of your existing card to a folder on your Mac/PC.
Replace the card and copy back everything.
The folder structure should remain the same and as long as your new card is named the same as the old one, all should work.
If not, then at least you can just swap the cards back and you have your original setup.
Then try something else
But the above 'should' work fine.
Hi Simon
Don't quite get your solution ( me being thick? ). I know how to copy the main contents of my SD card - but since rooting etc. my card now has 3 partitions - main, ext3, and linux swap. As I understand all the apps are on the EXT3 partition, which I can't see.
It's this partition's files I want to either move to the new card, or copy back to the phone ( so I can then transfer them using Apps2SD to my new card. )
Ah... sorry. I see where your problem is now
I would have assumed that all partitions would be visible when the card is mounted on the Mac/PC desktop.
Will ASTRO or any other file browser not see the partition ? How did you partition it in the 1st place ??
Someone cleverer than I needs to help you here I think
At least I've bumped the thread for you
Sorry for hijacking this slightly, but can anyone tell me if there is any need to move from MoDaCo 2.1 to 2.2?
And, what is the point of using Apps2SD?

Thats a really good question. You made me think about that..
Indeed that you cant copy the ext3 en linux-swap one to one to the new card. So i think a way couldt be:
Format youre new card in a fat32/ext3 and linux-swap like you did with the old sd-card. Do a nandroid-backup with the old sd-card in youre phone. Copy then all the content from the old sd-card [fat32 partition] to the new sd-card [via youre pc] Then insert the new sd-card in youre phone do the nadroid restore from the recovery. Maybe this is the solution. I really dont know. But if it dont work you always can put youre old-card back without any problem.

If you are already on 2.1, you can change to 2.2 without any problem. There is just a minor difference between them . Apps2sd just installs/moves youre apps on the sd-card so you have more space left on youre phone.
Heppieboeddah
Good idea - but I just tried that and it didn't work - I have to re-install all te apps amually ( a right PITA ).
@J-Zeus probably a bit late to help you now but an Ubuntu live cd would enable you to partition a new card with these formats and copy the contents across from the old one.
you would have to reinstall them manually anyway, as the connection to the market is lost and updates etc. wont show.
@Soulehmoo: why would this be? The apps were previously installed to the card so the app install db either remains on the phone (normal), in which case nothing changes with the new card, or be on the card itself, in which case, it may be copied across to the new one.
im not sure, but i have swapped a card over and thats what happened.
For those of you who wish to access all 3 partitions on the sdcard from windows you can dowload and use this program... (running it on Win7 x64)
DiskInternals Linux Reader 1.1 (Freeware)

And on a Mac lol?

[Q] Formatting SD-Card

I need some help with formatting my sd card om GSII ofcourse..
First question is: What involves in formatting an sd-card, I mean does it format it to where it was when i bought it, cause i know i have lots of unused apps that i have within some tim did move them into the sd-card and now i want a fresh clean format so i can like "start over" with a new rom fresh and all that.
Second: How to do it? I've looked and searched and i must be very stupid but i can't find where there is a guide to how to format my sd card on Samsung Galaxy S 2. All i find is how to change it to NTFS, EXT4, FAT32 and so on.. Which brings me to last question: Which one should i format to to get the most out of it?
I would really appreciate some help and not flame, Just cause u know more than me..

I WANT TO RESTORE MY SD AND GET BACK THE 4GB.
You're using a Card Reader and NOT connecting the phone via USB right?
If your phone can read the card, format it using CWM. That'll solve the issue.

cheers mate i have a solution
flash a stock rom with odin
yes thats all your partition will be wiped off and your card will show 4GB again
p.s. : i have learnt this from personel experience though in my case i didnt want the partition to get wiped
ninja edit: and dont buy that card reader ... buy yourself a coke instead
how this happen????!!
This happen during when u wan to change ROM you will make a full wipe that why your partition gone..
how to prevent this happen??
Its easy before you make a full wipe make sure you eject out your SD card ..and after that you can full wipe...after full wipe its done put back your SD card... and flash the new Zip. file

Unable to mount external SD Card after encrypting the Device on Stock Rom

Hi,
beacuase I had no other problems, I thought it would be a good Idea to encrypt my Android device. I did this first for the device through the settings menue and everything went as expected and my device was encrypted after a few minutes.
After that I wanted to encrypt the external SDcard aswell. But unfortunately when I select Encrypt SDcard in the settings menue, and the current password is requested, after entering the password, I get the error message: Error encrypting the sd card. Unable to mount the SD card.Tap mount to mount the sd card, after which the password prompt comes again.
WHen I look in the files directory, the external sdcard does not showup at all.
Anyone knows what the problem is?
I'm using the current STock Rom for Open German devices that was installed OTA a few weeks back. I have only rooted the device and done nothing else to it.
WHat went wrong? How can I get access to my external sd card back?
WHy does google offer such a option if at the end you end up loosing access to your sd crad?

Can you open de SD card on a PC? What do you see?
I don't think that Google intentionally implemented a "destroy SD Card" function. But it could be that something is flawed. It happens.
I can access the sd card on my pc without any error via the mini to maxi SD card adapter that came with the SGS2. I backed up all my files and everything looks normal on the sd card. So i could now format the entire sd card if that is necessary.
Thats the error message i receive:

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
After clicking continue and entering the password, it keeps coming back to this error message.
I also realized that there is a message showing "preparing sd card checking for errors"
But that never ends.
I formatted the sd card on my pc with different file sizes and with the sdformat tool from sdcard.org, as instructed in many posts that deal with this issue. But nothing helped.
The sd card is however accessible from the recovery menue.
I now removed the encryption from the device via the option in the settings menue. The encryption from the device is now apparently gone, but the message "preparing sd card checking for errors" is still there and I cstill can't access my sdcard.
Furthermore this sdcard has never been used in any other device. The problems started, when I encrypted the device. The sdcard was inside the device when I encrypted it.
I don't know what else I can do. I wish I never had tested the encryption feature.
A solution that worked for me
So this happened with me too.
It went away after I took these steps, in sequence:
1. Turned off the device (full power off)
2. Turned it back on
3. At this stage, the problem persisted
4. Removed the SD Card out
5. I saw the message "It is now safe to remove the SDcard". After I removed it. Oh well.
6. Re-inserted the SD card.
7. The same message came back - but this time it was gone after a few seconds, and got replaced with "the device has been encrypted".
I do not know if it was the entire set, or if it was only steps 4-7 that made it work - I'm just happy it worked

That didn't help for me.
I finally had to factory reset my device and then I first encrypted the SD card and then the device and that worked. Now both my SD card and device are encrypted.
BTW: I restored most of my apps and settings with the app "App Extractor" from my Clockworkmod backups. And that really works.
Only thing that didn't work was restoring all known W-Lan networks from App Extractor.
Things you might have to consider and I only found out later is:
1. You can not update over the air to a newer Firmware version if the device is encrypted. You have to decrypt it first, which takes some time to do.
2. YOu can not make Clockworkmod backups, once your device is encrypted. SO you have to decrypt the device first before you can update to the new firmware or if you want to make clockwork mod backups.
Once you are happy with your system settings, then It is ok to encrypt I think.
I have to add other disadvantages of the ENcryption Option which I just discovered.
1. The external SD card appears not to be encrypted at all. At least it is possible to access the files without any password prompt from the recovery menue. I was under the impression that that would not be possible.
2. If there is not enough space left on the encrypted SD card, a mounting and decryption is not possible anymore!!!!! You need to have at least 14 MB space left for the device to mount a encrypted sd card. If not, then you will not be able to mount it. Also If you want to decrypt the sd card once you have encrypted it, you need at least 400 to 500 MB of free storage on the device.
If you don't know this and have less than this amount of space left, then you will be in trouble and should have a copy of your files from the SD cards available couse formating will be the easiest Option everything else is a Pain in the ass.
I was only able to successfully decrypt and mount my formerly encrypted sd card when I discovered the point under 1.
So please be aware that the Android device encryption schould be considered highly experimental.
I have the same problem

I'm happy I didn't try it now. btw, once card is encrypted, can it b read in a computer ?
The external card never gets encrypted as far as I see it.
I can't remember whether i used the sd card in an adapter on my pc, I assumed that it was encrypted so I didn't try accessing the supposedly encrypted sd card on my pc via an adapter.
but you can access the files from the encrypted device by mounting it via USB cable.
Is google aware of these shortcomings of the device encryption?
They sell it as device encryption and you assume that you are save in case the phone is lost. But that is not the case.
Anyone knows whether these issues have been resolved in Jelly Bean?
Hey,
anyone has tried the device encryption on Jell bean yet?
Are the issues that we have talked about in this post resolved?
Is the external SD now also encrypted or still not?
And is the recovery possible with an encrypted device?
I'm too scared to get in the same problems again and therefore would like to know if someone was already brave enough to try encrypting under Jelly Bean.
OK. I tried encryption on Jelly Bean myself. And the status is unchanged to the prior version. External Card is still not encrypted, despite it beeing show as encrypted in the device settings.
So be aware about that.
Same here
Couple of weeks back, joined the phone to the mail server at work. Was on pattern unlock. SD card said was encrypted and required PIN. What pin? Fortunately, set to PIN unlock and could see SD card contents again. Dumbass that I am, did not immediately back up contents.
Today, went to play some music. No music. No pictures. No video. Tried rebooting phone. No go. Changed PIN. Still no. Reinserted SIM. Nope. Not sure what else can be tried. OI file manager just shows "Scanning" when I try and access the device.
Encryption (this implementation anyway) is buggy and should not be trusted.

Managed to get access again by unmounting the SD card and ejecting and reinserting. It then asked for the PIN (which was the original one, not the new one). Hope this might help someone in the same situation. I'm hoping removing the phone from the mail server and using Divide will work (I'm mostly after calendaring anyway)
Now I'm stuck with the ugly problem that I decrypted the SD card and it is *still* asking me for the password. It's like it is not a full decrypt. I guess the answer is to copy everything off and reformat.
same problem with kitkat
even i have encrypted the device., now i cant use external sd , no option to decrypt. ANDROID sucks :crying:
Any update on encryption for I9100?
Is this a I9100 specific problem or is the encryption buggy for other Android devices as well?
There are several sites promoting the use of Android's encryption feature. Are these guys just not aware that encryption doesn't work? Or does it work for them properly?
I only have a I9100 and can't test it on other devices.
Encrypt SD Note N-7105
I had exactly the same problem and I did many things before to finally solve. I made a soft and hard reset, erase cache-dalvik cache and factory reset annnndddd, NOTHING. Finally I reset it to factory, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, format system all what de recovery said that can be resetted except, the modem. I flashed my amazing DN4 v2.2 again anddddd VoilĂ  the "Preparing SD Card for errors" and "Blank SD Card" disappeared. My sd was ok ever. I hope this can help you.

[TUTORIAL][GUIDE] Get Apps to SD Card L9

This is obviously the most frustrating thing that we all want to do on the L9 (I have the P769 v20h T-Mobile ROOTED). This should work on all L9's. After tons of research I finally figured out a working method through multiple threads. There's methods with DirectoryBind and BusyBox scripts to mount but those were honestly confusing to me and I didn't understand how to operate those.
First off your phone MUST BE ROOTED. If your phone is not rooted here is a thread that will explain to you how to root, the software is chinese but I promise you it works.
Required Items:
Rooted L9
SD Card
Steps:
1.) I repeat you MUST be rooted
2.) Backup your SD cards files on your computer because you will be formatting the SD card.
3.) We must partition the SD Card into two parts. You can do this by downloading any SD card partitioner app but I used AParted.
3a.) Before you can do anything in the "Aparted" app you have to unmount your SD card. You can do this by going to your system settings. Then go to "Storage" then down at the bottom you will see "Unmount SD Card". Click that.
3b.) Now go into AParted. Click on the "TOOLS" tab at the top. You should only have one partition called "Part 1". Checkmark Part 1 and choose delete down at the bottom.
3c.) You now have a completely formatted SD card.
4.) Create TWO FAT32 partitions by going to the "TOOLS" tab at the top. The first partition is considered your SD card so this is where you would store personal pictures and music, etc from your computer. The second partition is where all the apps and apps data will be moved to. So make sure you appropriately size your partitions. Since I keep a fair sum of music I have a 8GB SD card and made the first partition 1.5GB and used the remaining space for Partition 2.
4a.) To make the partition click checkmark part 1 then click create. Under File System choose "Fat32". Make sure to only use whatever space you will need to store music, etc... Do this by changing the "Size" 1000 is equal to a gigabyte. So if you have a 4GB SD card then you can make this first partition 1500 or 2000 (1.5GB or 2GB) but you have to leave space. Now Click ok.
4b.) Now to make partition 2. Checkmark "Part 2" and click create. Under the file system choose "fat32" again. This time dont change the size, just use the remaining space that it shows and click ok.

5.)Now download the app called "Link2SD"
6.) Once you open the app it will scan a list of all your apps.

7.) BE CAREFUL with which apps you choose to move, I would say limit yourself to only moving the apps you've downloaded such as ESPN, Netflix, Games, etc...
8.) Choose the program you want to move to your SD card, I chose Cut the Rope.
9.) Click the "Create Link" button
10.) Make sure all three options are check-marked (Link Application Files, Link Dalvik-cache Files, Link Library Files)
11.) It will finish and you can proceed to link any apps you desire to the SD card, you can go into your system apps and see how much free space is available so you know it worked. You can see on mine I have much more than 339MB used.
If this helped please give thanks

I respect your opinion, but the reason I did not mention LGPwn was because on the newest firmware update on the T-Mobile version of the P769 which is v20h (released September 13 I think) the LGPwn method no longer works and the Chinese software was the only root method that worked with v20h.
This looks pretty legit hopefully this works. Ive been trying everything to free up some space on this phone.
Weird. LGPwn worked on v20h for me. There are a few different models of P769s out there.

Where is the problem occurring? The main part I'm missing in here is how to delete the partition. You have to unmount the SD card before you can perform any deletion of the partition.

I feel like the same issue for you is the mounting. I'll edit my main post and add those steps. You have to go to settings>storage>SD card> Unmount SD Card. Then you goto the Aparted app and goto the tools tab to delete everything on your SD card. Then you create the two partitions with the free space

Of course. I'm glad too help. Be careful with games like CSR Racing which is like 200MB where they download extra files because it looks like those extra files don't link to the SD card. I'm working on figuring it out though.

LGPwn only roots. It doesn't do anything regarding putting apps on sd card. Follow the instructions in the OP and you should be fine.

Yeah, just wanted you to clarify that all it does is root. It isn't an alternative for this process of getting apps on your sd.
Dumb question... Since I'm dearly new in this. Will getting that extra space on phone improve its performance?

Question
Why would you use 2 fat 32 partitions as opposed to making an ext3 or ext4 and linking like you would do on a lower end phone?

Not likely. Depending on the class of your sd card it could even slightly negatively impact your apps that are loaded on the sd card. It's worth any nominal change in speed to be able to get the apps to the SD card as otherwise this phone is definitely handcuffed by a small internal storage limit.
I actually tried ext4 and after I partitioned the phone wouldn't even read my SD.
Also I tried to use link2SD with a second fat32 but link2sd said it didn't support my phone. Is it cause I rooted with lgpwn?

How to back up SD card files on computer? Any program or software to do the back up? Thanks.
