please help - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so i've tried to install a rom (Touwiz4), and i've tried to follow the steps, and as dumb as i am, i've used the update.zip method (by renaming the file to update). It installed, but everytime i turn the phone on, it is stuck on the samsung logo, please help me
Also: i can get into download mode and the Home+Power menu
Please help me, i don't know what to do if i lose my phone

this can always happen this is why you have to take backups...
What is your phone?
You can search around for stock roms or try to install another custom rom.
here are some locations where you can find stock roms:
http://andwise.net/?p=199

ok it's simple:
Recovery
Wipe data
Wipe Chace
Wipe devilchace
Reinstall rom
enjoy... ^_^

And if i get a rom (official or custom), should i use the apply update.zip option? Or there is another way?

I don't have the advance menu

you can use update.zip method (i suppose you just select 'apply /sdcard/update.zip')
or you can select 'choose zip from sdcard' in 'install zip from sdcard menu'
BUT before that, as ubas90 said you have to:
Wipe data
Wipe Chace
Wipe dalvilk cache (which is in the advanced menu)
If you do not have advanced menu it seems that your recovery is not really CWM (check that, it has to be written ClockworkMod somewhere).
You can install CWM following these instructions: http://andwise.net/?p=268
you can always try without wiping dalvilk cache, depending on the previous state it may not be needed.

I'll first try without installing CWM, i just don't need to get in more trouble
Also, what is the key combination for the ace for the bootloader use? When to use the fastboot.exe?

have u last recovery?
look is simple, make 3 wipe, then install zip and reboot
if couldn't make wipe devil cache could find the devil's zip by brainmaster...

Need FLASHING Help

I am use to ROM flashing my Eris with Amon_RA Recovery. I have never used Rom Manager or ClockworkMod Recoverry to flash ROMs. Will someone point me in the right direction on where the best tutorial thread is at.....? I believe that is what eveyone here in TB section is using.
Have you rooted your Tbolt yet? If so it's fairly simple.
1 Flash CWM to your phone via ROM MAnager
2 Place ROM on your SD card
3 Perform backup via RM
4 From RM choose to install ROM from SD card
5 Select Wipe date (if you choose to of course)
6 Hit ok
Thanks!

Thanks! That seems easy enough. Is #5 Select "Wipe date" or "Wipe data"?

if you chose to flash a rom through rom manager, one you chose your rom, it will have a box you can select that says to wipe data.
personally I refuse to do this as CWM still is a bit wonky for the TB. I prefer to manually go into CWM and wipe data a twice, cache twice, and delvik cache twice.

This is where I am confused... I have a rooted Tbolt. I have CWM and ROM Manager installed (from the rooting instructions).
I have the ROM I want downloaded to my SD card, but it's just the original name of the ROM (The-Perfect-Storm-v1.0-signed.zip). So do i have to rename this?
then do I just go into CWM and... how do I get this into the recovery mode to backup?
I have read like 75 threads and everyone seems to know all this already so the questions are either SUPER specific or they glance over steps that a COMPLETE ROM N00B (such as me) would need to know.
I would really appreciate a mite more details in the steps. Thanks a ton!!
Bryan
EDIT *BIGTIME*
Just went looking for CWM, and guess what??? ITS IN ROM MANAGER *facepalm*
this answers a LOT. Like the button that says "Reboot into recovery"
This is why I need a self-edit button.
*Edit 2* new ROM flashed perfectly.
uhhh. I take it should reboot into a recovery ROM. What if it only reboots to the CWR screen again?
I am currently running VirusROM and have attempted to flash dasBAMF 1.3.2 twice now. Both times the kernel doesn't flash, I loose root, and hangs on the "Android" screen when I reboot forcing a battery pull. I am downloading the .zip file, placing it on the root of my SD card and flashing via CWM. I choose to wipe data each time. Any suggestions guys? Thanks so much for your help.
I'm thinking that CWM isn't fully wiping my data and cache. Could this simply be the case? I'm waiting to try flashing again until I get some suggestions. Its such a pain to get root access and recover each time.

[Q] CM7 wont boot?

just flashed my S2 via that:
___
Harder way:
Make sure you're running a rooted device.
Root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1118693)
Do a Nandroid backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition) - do it for real.
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
___
but after I chose reboot it still is in the yellow triangle screen and nth is hap.
(more than 10 min)
that cant be good?
can I reflash via Odin?
If you can put your phone in download and Odin connects, yes you can try a stock kernal.
Go into CWM
Wipe data/cache
Wipe dalvik cache
reflash the CM7 zip.
wipe dalvik cache just worked awesome!!!

[Q] "Can't mount /dev/block/vold/179:9"

I was attempting to flash clockworkmod and I am now stuck in recovery. Attempting to reboot does nothing, I did a factory reset. Applying update.zip just gives me the error in the title of this thread, plus "can't mount update.zip"
I see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782204 as a last option but is there anything else I can do? If I remove my sd card and put a new update.zip on it manually, will this fix the problem?
ok a few things first.
1)which CWM did you install?
2)Which Rom are you trying to install?
if you have the rom on your sd card simply factory rest, wipe cache, and dalvik cash......
then without rebooting flash zip from sdcard [navigate to and flash your rom]
then reboot.
you shouldn't need the apply update zip
if that doesn't work odin a stock image and start all over again

I'm not sure which version, the file only says "cwmrecovery.tar"
I'm trying to install CyanogenMod 7.1
Can you explain a little more regarding wiping cache and dalvik cache, and also how to flash the rom without using any application. I only have access to "reboot system now", "apply sdcard:update.zip", "wipe data/factory reset" and "wipe cache partition" as of right now
EDIT: Clockworkmod recovery is not functioning, if that was not clear.
Follow this guide for installing mtd roms such as cm7, aosp, miui...Just replace vgb rom with cm7.

[Q] how to install malice v5.0 for the First time????

how do i install it? im new to this and i need to know if i just flash the most current or do i have to flash a older version then do the new one?
You have to root your phone, and install a custom recovery.
If you already have that, just follow the instructions in the post:
For all users:
-Download Malice.zip and place on your sdcard.
-Boot into Clockwork Recovery and Wipe Data/Factory Reset Before You Move On.
-Flash Malice.zip.-While still in recovery: Wipe Cache Partition, and inside the advanced menu: Wipe Dalvik Cache and Fix Permissions
-Just These Three Steps, Do Not Factory Reset Again.
-Reboot Your Phone AND LET IT SIT. (I know you're excited, but its for the best.)
-After about 10 minutes, you should reboot again to clean things up and wipe out any bugs.
-Enjoy!
The above instructions are perfect, I've recently gone back to malice from simply honey. Don't forget to check out the themes for it as well. I'm using ice blue edition, and the assassin theme looks nice too.
Enjoy the nice ROM.

Do you have Clockwork installed form the Market? If so, you may have to Reinstall Packages twice in the 4 option recovery menu. That shoudl get you into CWR after the second one.
Make sure you have downloaded ROM manager from the market and have installed clockwork recovery from there first. Then if you are in the stock recovery, chooses reinstall packages.... You might have to do this twice I below to get into clockwork.... It's been a while since I've been on stock but that should get you in.

[Q] note2_JellyBeans_B8.zip Upgrade

Assuming my Galaxy Note II phone has been unlocked successfully, if I do a factory reset to upgrade to note2_JellyBeans_B8.zip:
YOU MUST BE UNLOCKED
Step 1-
Wipe Data Factory Reset!
Step 2-
Wipe davlick cache
Step 3-
install zip and pick your options
Step 4-
Reboot and enjoy!
wouldn't this restore the phone back to stock?? Or is it just the bootloader partition that is left alone when you do a factory reset? Also, the instructions were not too clear when it mentions: "install zip and pick your options". Do I unzip the file and pick something in the install folder? A tad confused here...

You want to wipe system, factory reset, cache and dalvik cache. Factory reset will wipe data like Google account and apps and such.
Then the ROM installs with aroma which loads up a GUI that let's you choose what you want. Can choose apps installed clock location how many widgets you show at the top what kernel you run etc. Literally flash the zip and you'll understand.

Thanks. I am not sure how to "wipe system", but I read how to factory reset and clear dalvik cache. Also not sure how to load the jellybeans ROM(do I mount it.. is it an .iso? etc.)... lots of reading to do. Ty for the input m8.

If youre using TWRP click wipe, then factory reset, swipe to do so, then cache same way, then dalvik.
To flash rom click the install tab, find the rom, make sure you tell it to look at the internal or external at the top and find the rom, then swipe to flash it
sidenote: factory reset clears data, which is what most people do. system wipe actually clears out the partition where the rom is, in other words the phone will not reboot until youve flashed a rom to it

Put the ROM on your phone and go to the install section of your recovery (You must boot into recovery by holding power, home, and volume up while turning on your phone) and flash it from there.

My phone is now unlocked + jailbroken after following instructions from CASUAL. No issues.
When u say put the rom in your phone. U mean my SD card? Per littleguevara's post:
"To flash rom click the install tab, find the rom, make sure you tell it to look at the internal or external at the top and find the rom, then swipe to flash it
sidenote: factory reset clears data, which is what most people do. system wipe actually clears out the partition where the rom is, in other words the phone will not reboot until youve flashed a rom to it" <----- if the phone is wiped then everything is gone so I can't put the jellybeans rom there.
Also from "Originally Posted by nosympathy

Will I be able to wipe cache and dalvik cache WHILE in recovery mode? I just want to be as proactive as possible and avoid being reactive to anything that comes my way that I am not aware of. I believe I already have TWRP (i saw their logo while jailbreaking).. Any input is appreciated m8.
