[Q] “Parse Error : There is a problem parsing the package” - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an older version Player Pro(2.2).When I try to upgrade it to the latest version using another .apk file of version 2.3,it gives this error“Parse Error : There is a problem parsing the package”.I cannot update it from the android market as I have not purchased the app.Any idea why is this happening?

i get this same error with other apps i try to install...particularly when i know the app isnt for my device....ima google it

I don't think a site made for developers will want to help you fix a problem with a pirated app. If you really like it that much, buy it, it's not like it costs a fortune. I bought it and never had any problem updating from the market.
Sent from my wi-fi toaster.

I'm trying to find a fix for the same thing. But mine is not a pirated app it is an app from a tab I have and a couple off apps that came with it I can't find on the market or anything that works like them I waisted a lot of money trying to find one and thought this is just pointless. I tried resigning the APK but no go any ideas?

This errors occurs when the apk is built with different API level than API level your phone supports. Ex: If your phone is having Gingerbread (2.3.*) and your app is compiled for tablets (honeycomb), you see this error.

Make sure the app has the correct amount of information, for example, an app with 0 bytes would not work, which has happened before when a file is not created properly.

i dont understand, is this error coz of version mismach? or ???
P.S. this is my first post on xda wish me luck )

I also have this problem with an app that is called Wavesink Trial (Usb Dab Radio app)
I want this to work for my car player that has Android 2.3.4 but the Wavesink only works for Android 3.0 and above.
I tried to change the Androidmanifest.xml minSdkVersion value to 8 (which is for Froyo) so it should be able to run on my car player.
I even sent a mail to the developer which said it could'nt be possible as Android 2.3.4. doesn't have Usb Host mode, but i guess it has since the carplayer has support for Usb Wifi adapter aswell as memorysticks.
Anyone have a solution.
btw, i decompiled the app, edited the manifest, recompiled the app and signed it again.

If you get a “ Parse Error: There is a
problem parsing the package ”
message when trying to install an
APK, it could be due to different
reasons, but the most 2 common
ones are as below:
The APK file you’re trying to to
install is corrupted. That might
be due to an error when
downloading (such as the
connection getting lost) or the
APK being already broken before
you download it. Try
downloading the file again,
preferably from another location.
If possible, use trusted websites
such as SlideME or Mobango
where the APK are tested
beforehand.
If that doesn’t fix it, it’s probably
because the Android version on
your device is below the
requirements of the app. For
instance, you’re trying to install
an app that requires Android 4.1
and higher on a device running
Android 2.3. To see which
Android version your device is
running, go to Settings, then
About Phone and look at the
number next to Android Version
(or Firmware Version). Unless
you can update the system
(check that by going to Settings ,
About phone , then System
Updates ), you won’t be able to
do much about that. To avoid
situations like this, always check
before downloading that the
requirements of the app are in
line with your device. Good app
stores like SlideMe or Amazon
always provide the minimum
Android version which is needed.

If this occurs on Marshmallow, go to settings>apps. Tap the three dot menu and tap "show system." Scroll down and look for "Package installer." Click permissions and make sure storage is on(the circle is to the right of the oval). If not on, that permission can cause this error. Hope it helps.:good:

Retrieving stock apks (mainly TrackID)

Greetings. Been haunting this place for awhile, happy to finally have root.
After the phone is rooted the last step is something that sweeps up a bunch of SE's stock apps that most people don't want. What about us who actually liked a few of them, though?
I would have liked to keep the app called "TrackID," and am wondering if there's any way to get it back? I can't really find like a repository for the base APKs (I might want the Mixi plugin for Timescape back in the future, as well).
Can someone rip these out somehow for individual installing?
Here it is:
http://rapidshare.com/files/403753839/trackid.apk.html
Just install the apk.
Its works for me.
Nice threat, nice anwser.
It works fine with me too.
Thanks!
Preventing the rooting process from removing apps
Hello, You could just enter the step4 folder and open the cleanup.sh file in notepad or similar.
Remove the line saying rm *packagename here*. Then your app will only be copied to your SD, but it will also remain on the phone.
track id request
i couldnt download the package, the link no longer works :-(
Could someone uóad it again to another server? Because its a common problem and will br of much help thanks
http://balsat.hopto.org/builds/seX10-system/index.php?dir=..%2FseX10-system%2Fdir%2Fsystem%2Fapp%2F
ok... but now...
I have the app already installed, but now evertime it tries to connect it says "authentication error".... help?
I gave up and rooted the phone again, i went from steps 1 to 3 with no problems, using track id everytime to make sure it worked, and it did, I even used the cleanup script and it was there working very well...
So, I used steps 4 and 5 (for the X10a) But now it wont work... it says "authentication error".... what gives?
Sorry for my english, I´m from mexico...
Everything on my phone is working fine...
For TrackID I can only say that it was probably a rights issue.
Use chmod or Root Explorer to set the rights(644).
For step 4 and 5 i cant help,i have only a 3 step X10i ,sorry.
But dont give up, i think u find the help here on XDA.

[Q] Applications not working - Not signed with trusted certificate

This is my first post, so apologies if this is in the wrong place or has been asked before (I have searched and found some answers, but none of these worked)
Basically, last night whenever I tried to use an application on my HTC HD2 I was getting the following error message:
"The file xxx cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one if its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring this file."
In searching for the solution, a lot of people are saying that I need to edit the reistry. (Specifiaclly HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies DWord = 0000101a - Change value from 0 to 1)
I have tried downloading the recommended registry editors on the forums (Resco Explorer etc.) but am unable to install because the "program is from an unknown publisher." I click yes to get pass this initial message, like I always have done in the past, and the following is displayed:
Installation was unseccessful. The program or setting cannot be installed beacause it is not digitally signed with a trusted certificate."
I have also tried using a program recommended called CeRegistryEditor and using my PC via ActiveSync to edit the registry, but am getting an error message "Access Denied!".
Does anybody know any other way of editing the registry? Am I actually doing the right thing? Are there any security settings that I need to disable to allow CeReistryEditor to edit the registry?
This is really bugging me, I have only been without my apps for about 12 hours throughout the night but it is hard to live without them!! I REALLY don't want to perform a hard reset and will do anything to avoid this!
When I get this I just remove evertyhing to do with it on the phone and re download it (the cab file usually) and it seems to work.
thanks for your reply. I have tried this but when I try and reinstall I am getting the message: Installation was unseccessful. The program or setting cannot be installed beacause it is not digitally signed with a trusted certificate.
I think that the security settings have been changed, but I cant see how to change them with editing the registry which I am struggling to do
Can I ask what app you are trying to install? Or is it any app?
Multiple Apps that were running OK yesterday, but not today. I think it is all the apps that I have downloaded from Omarket.... Omarket isnt working either!
Hi,
Any luck on this. I m also facing similar issue after installing Android on my HD2.
I have the exact same issue after running Android from SD card. No application (non-stock ones) are working anymore. Like 3rd party certificates are being blocked or something...
For everyone with this problem, download Mobile Registry Editor and connect your phone to your PC via USB, then start the Editor and go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies" and search for the DWord "0000101a" and change the decimal to "1", that will fix your problem. This problem happens to me if I "reboot" while in Android instead of turning the phone completely off and then back on.
Edit: Added link to download.
As a side note, I always did this to mine while running Windows Mobile, then booted Android after fixing the registry.
and when this is not possible
Hi,
i have the same issue after loading android from the sd-card.
But, i am not able to change the reg, access denied, also with ceregistry unlock tool.

Hi,
I also have the same issue after loading android from the sd-card. I have also re-installed the stock rom and the problem still persists. Im also unable to install any reg editors as keep getting the "not signed with a trusted certificate".
I read that a cooked rom may be a solution around this but I liked the set up I had and wanted to keep my original rom so any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Lee
Exactly the same problem.
Non-stock programs not working after failed boot of android from SD card, and I'm unable to change any registry entries either. Practically I'm locked out of my phone, just the basic functions working. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
if forget where I originally found this link (its on xda some place)
http://www.internet-tools.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/sda_unlock.zip
but run this first and you no longer get the access denied when using the mobile registry editor , hope it helps.
I have the same problem, just remove the program that was not working, pull out your memory card , then delete the files in the sd card except the application installer, hard reset your phone, and remember to go to SETTINGS-UPDATES&FEEDBACK-ERROR REPORTING-DISABLE ERROR REPORTING, and turn off your phone, put in the memory card and turn your phone on and install the application one by one, the application installed will work as normal, Good Luck, remember to back up your data before hard reset

[Q] Making G Tablet work

I have a G Tablet, and have used Cyanogenmod 7.0.3 for some time. I thought I would upgrade from 1.1 to 1.2, so I could try some Honeycomb like goodness. Right. Not a good plan.
Thanks Roebeet for NVFlash!
So, I have been trying to reinstall what I had, and I have run up against some troubles. I now have Cyanogenmod 7.0.3 and Gapps 20110307 running on the Gtablet, but I am struggling with the market. At first, I could not get the market to run; all it would do was FC. Thanks to Google-fu, a change in the language to English (United States) got that repaired.
So, the only way I can get stuff installed is to revert back to 2.3.3 market. The new market sees my tablet as Malata Tablet. I have changed build.prop fingerprint, but in the Market on the device, the message I get is "Your device is not compatible with this item". On the web Market, it identifies my tablet as Malata Gtablet. If I downgrade the Market app, I can install Maps and Flash, but when Market upgrades those apps don't show up as apps in My Apps.
So, I need to change more in the build.prop, right? So what the heck do I change? I am not able to mess around for days on end to upgrade to 1.2, I just want to use the tablet for what I was; web, kindle, google reader. I can do that, but I want to fix this weird issue too!
Can anyone help me out? TIA!
What is your ro.product.device = in build.prop?
Try changing it to
ro.product.device=olympus
--
Fixed
Actually, the way I fixed the market issue, was to change the DPI in the build.prop from 161 to 160. Boom, everything works fine.....yes!
G tablet is back baby, I am waiting for cheaper quad core tablets before I even dream about upgrading.....sweeeeeeeet!
Where do I go to change the DPI in the build.prop. Sorry for being such a noob!
I've been told two ways to edit build.prop, one by using ES File Explorer (which is free) and the other by using Root Explorer (which isn't). However, the only way I know to install either is via the Market, which tells me they aren't compatible with my tablet.
I have a chicken-and-egg problem: I can't edit build.prop until I install one of those apps, and I can't install either app without editing build.prop first.
So hopefully there's another way... anyone?

HOKAY. I've missed something somewhere. I've set the DPI to 160 rather than 161, but I still get the "not compatible" message.

Someone else probably will answer, but you can get root explorer by using Amazon Market app which you can download and install and while they aren't as complete as the real "market" they also work and don't cause these kinds of problems. (you will have a better experience if you already have an Amazon account.)

[Q] List of rules to install generic .APK file?

Ok, I've side-loaded a generic .APK file, into a sub-dir within the 1.0-GB
area. (Previously, I likewise side-loaded a movie file into this same area, and it plays great.)
As I read other posts asking this same type of question about procedures/rules
for installing side-loaded apps, I'm not yet clear on a few things, such as
whether I need to be 'rooted' to install them and whether I first need to
purchase/install separate SD-card and load such generic apps there instead.
My current state is:
(1) My Nook tablet is still at 1.4.0 (i.e. I have NOT yet received the 1.4.1
update that blocks installation of such APKs.)
(2) My NT is NOT yet rooted.
When I view/select the side-loaded generic app, see a red question-mark on the file, and tappin it, I get msg:
"This nook cannot read this file. It may be an unsupported format."
So, what should I try next, to allow this file-type of .APK to be
a supported type?
Is this your first non-B&N apk? If so, I believe you have to download and install at least one apk directly through the Tablet's browser to get the option changed to allow sideloaded apks.

Well, it WAS my first non-B/N app.
So, I installed an app, one named 'Skitch', from the BN app store.
But, that makes no difference at all...my original side-loaded APK file
still gives the same error msg that I mentioned in the base post.
So, your 'belief' seems to be incorrect.
Anyone else know what to do, to install side-loaded .APK files?
[This issue could end up being one more nail in the coffin...if I don't resolve this,
I'll have to strongly consider returning this device, and waiting for a 'true' Android
tablet this spring, with newer, more main-stream code (e.g. 'Ice Cream Sandwich')
in it.]
Hi cookdav,
CapsLockKey is correct about needing to download an apk through the browser in order to do what you would like.
I noticed this yesterday after playing with my NT for the first time. When you download an apk through the browser you will see a notification in the lower left hand corner that it is complete. You have to launch the apk from this notification in order for the file to be correctly recognized.
When I went to my downloaded files and tried clicking the apk file I got the same message you are seeing. It seems to me that the BN overlay does not natively recognize the apk file format, but the code responsible for the notifications does.
You should then be able to follow the directions for enabling ADB. After that you can use adb to install any apk file you would like.
I hope this helps and that it was clear.

What does installing an app from the B&N app store have to do with side loading an app from the browser or email? Have you bothered to read the "how to side load apps thread?"
How you can fix your face to say "your 'belief' seems to be incorrect." when you aren't following instructions is funny as hell.

The operative word there is 'seems'.
And, yes, I did read that thread, but obviously now, I missed something.
I guess I missed the distinction, between installing an app via 'shop'
and installing an app via the browser. So, shoot me.
[That said, I'm still a bit confused. But, reading-between-the-lines has always
been problematic for some of us newbies.
I'll go back and re-read everything 3 times again,
and I'm sure that these distinctions will eventually become clear to me.]
Thanks for clarifying.
Ok, did one thru the browser, but still no-go...
Ok. I installed 'golauncher', via the browser.
Sigh. But, once again, after that, when I go back and try to install
the earlier-mentioned .APK, it still says what it has been saying all along.
Hmm..a new possibility has occurred to me: Maybe I'm so immersed in
Linux and Windows-XP and Win-7, that that has made me too stupid
to follow directions and learn this new 'tablet-way' of doing things.
[Whoever said "The devil is in the details" must have been an Android user.]
Clearly, I've STILL missed something, after re-reading. Anyone got
any more ideas/guesses of what I might still be missing?
"this nook cannot read this file" although I do sideload apks
I got a similar problem with Nook Tablet wit 1.4.0
I have managed to download an app so that my settings have been changed to accept those apps
If i go to another app market, I do install apps.
But for some reason I am limited (Amazon Apps refuses to work because I am not in the US and others have limitations which I dont understand, as on a chinese android pc they work, however)
SO I d like to install from sd card
And i get this message "this nook cannot read this file"
If I mail to gmail, in nook mail I cant open attachment (nor any others)
Any workaround?
Thanks
Agnes

I don't think you can install apk's through the native file browser. You will need a different file browser to install your apk's.
if you are downloading directly from the internet browser, then the installation process is the same as installing the tgps launcher or in your case go launcher.
However, if you are sideloading your apk's through something like dropbox or an sd card, you will need a file browser.
I recommend Root Explorer (paid), but if you need a free one you can download es file explorer.
es file explorer can be found in the must have apps thread located in the themes and apps section of the NT forums. Just go to that page on your NT internet browser and click the download link. You will be redirected to a download page, and there should be something that says "remove this frame". Tap on that and your download should start.
hope this helps

[Q] Help! - Accidentally deleted system UI on root, android 4.1

Ok, so I rooted the Huawei Ascend Y300, and with my new-found power i for some reason decided it was a good idea to delete the system UI...
So now the screen is just black, I can't access anything and it keeps coming up with "systemUI has stopped responding".
I tried downloading Huawei's official firmware from their website, and flashed the device, but whilst installing it said "update error" and wouldn't install it.
Any ideas on what I can do? Or have I broken it for good?
You have activated USB Debugging? If so, you need Android SDK, and the missing file (unpack the official firmware to find it), so you can copy it using adb (included in the Android SDK, tell me if you need more detailed info).

Also when i downloaded the pack from huawei, it just came with the file "UPDATE.APP"
Check if you can open the Update package using some program (winrar, 7zip), otherwise you'll need to search for the file.

I hope this helps someone with a similar issue as the post is old.. I had deleted my xperia ui sometime back so each time the phone booted , it went to black with "Ui has stopped'. I could swipe down and go to settings.. Since i had formatted the phone before that there was no account linked to it.. I added my gmail account and sent myself a mail with nova launcher prime as an attachment.. As soon as the phone notified me of my mail, i downloaded the nova launcher apk and installed it.. Works fine now..
Hope this helps..
I rooted my asus zenfone 5 and by mistake I uninstalled my system ui it came like that the system ui is not responding so I switched it of and factory reseted the phone and when I switched it on I can see a black screen and I cannot change my phone'sv wallpaper I cannot see the task bar or the status bar or the notification bar and I also cannot see my recent apps. WHAT TO DO NOW ???
My phone doesnt show and home button recent button and the notification shade

You have activated USB Debugging? If so, you need Android SDK, and the missing file (unpack the official firmware to find it), so you can copy it using adb (included in the Android SDK, tell me if you need more detailed info).

I SOLVED IT *****! HERE'S HOW I DID [email protected]@@
I accidentally deleted com.android.systemui on my phone. Version KitKat 4.4.2.
STEP 1. HAVE AN EXACT DUPLICATE OF THE PHONE READY. HAVE THE SAME PHONE READY. LUCKILY I HAD ANOTHER PHONE OF THE SAME MODEL. GO TO A PHONE SHOP OR SOMETHING.
IT WILL HAVE THE SAME com.android.systemui .
STEP 2. INSTALL NOVA LAUNCHER OR SOME SORT OF LAUNCHER ON THE PHONE MISSING THE FILE, SO YOU CAN LOAD THE PHONE AND BE ABLE TO SEE IT!
STEP 3. INSTALL TITANIUM BACKUP ON BOTH PHONES. ROOT IT AND USB DEBUG IT BEFOREHAND.
STEP 4. ON THE BACK UP PHONE, OPEN UP TITANIUM BACKUP AND CLICK ON BACKUP/RESTORE ON THE UPPER TABS AND GO TO com.android.systemui. BACK THE **** UP THE FILE.
STEP 5. CONNECT IT TO THE COMPUTER, AND GO TO YOUR PHONE AND COPY WHAT'S INSIDE THE "TitaniumBackup" FOLDER.
STEP 6. CONNECT THE ****ED UP PHONE TO YOUR COMPUTER AND PASTE THE CONTENTS OF "TitaniumBackup" FOLDER (WHICH ARE com.android.systemui FILES) IN THE ****ED UP PHONE'S "TitanumBackup" FOLDER.
STEP 7. DISCONNECT EVERYTHING, EXIT OUT OF EVERYTHING, AND RESTART THE PHONES. GO TO YOUR ****ED UP PHONE, CLICK ON AND OPEN UP THE TITANIUM BACKUP, FIND com.android.systemui AND RESTORE IT!
STEP 8. ENJOY YOUR PHONE.
NOW YOU DON'T HAVE TO FORMAT IT , RESET IT, REINSTALL A FOREIGN ROM, OR DEBUG IT USING ADB OR SDK, AND ALL OTHER COMPLICATED **** FLOATING AROUND, RISKING LOSING ALL OF YOUR DATA. JUST GO A LITTLE CREATIVE.
IF IT WAS OF ANY HELP TO YOU OR YOU ACTUALLY RECOUPED YOUR DATA BECAUSE OF ME, AND YOUR PHONE DATA WAS OF ANY WORTH TO YOU, PROBABLY WORTH MORE THAN $100, PLEASE SEND ME SOME APPRECIATION PREFERRABLY OVER $100, TO MY PAYPAL. THE EMAIL ADDRESS IS [email protected]
