Worried about encryption bug - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just realized i meant to post this here
Been using ics passion for a couple months now as a daily driver and havent had many issues, but i recently read about the ics encryptiom bug that basically randomly bricks phones for no reason so im thinking about switching away till its safe...
I just wanna be sure what roms have this bug?
Also whats ics passion based on?
So would it be all ics or just CM9? Nexus ports? Aosp? Gsii?
Thank you in advance
sent from the xda app on my android smartphone.

I encountered the deadly "Encryption Unsuccessful" bug while running doc masters ics rom v5. Now I don't know whether this is the case for all ics roms but just to be safe you should stay away from ics altogether. I was never able to fix my vibrant no matter what I did I couldn't bring it back to life...so you've been warned.
Of course things are much better now that I have a new Gnex with official ics 4.0.4

Very cool about the gnex... for the vibrant, have you tried unbrickable mod?? Maybe itll fix it

You mean Eugene's unbrickable rom? I've tried Eugene's rom with no success. I tell you I tried just about everything...nothing seems to work. Unless you know of some other method which I don't know of.

Sent from a cell tower to the XDA server to you.

The Jtagging method is not any different than odin. I am able to flash anything through download mode. But not CWM which doesn't exist in my case. I have lost complete access to my internal flash memory...it is unable to mount because it is encrypted with a key in which i don't know. And i don't know how to decrypt it at this point.
The second method which is the hard mod method seems to be a little risky. I won't even bother trying that method since it is useless in my case. You see my phone is not "hard" bricked it is "soft" bricked. With that being said my phone turns on...boots up...i can enter download mode...access stock recovery not CWM...and access external sdcard through adb...thats it.
The only way to save my phone would be to create a temporary partition on my external sd card to act as its main memory. All that while being done through adb commands if even possible. So at this point my phone is complete paperweight until someone finds a solution.
I think this will eventually become a widespread problem sooner or later on all ICS roms. When the time comes somebody out there on these forums will eventually find a solution. Or at least i hope.
Thanks for the help guys i really appreciate it but my phone is bricked for now.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA

from my understanding, both jtag and unbrickable mod start at the primary bootloader level and rewrite everything up from there, which i would assume includes sdcard too..
Are you sure youre not confusing jtag with jig??

My mistake. But i see that they charge $40 to fix your phone. There is no way I'm sending my phone to those guys. I have some personal data on my vibrant that I'll never let anybody get a hold of such as credit card info etc.
I am much happier now with my new Galaxy Nexus. I don't really care about my bricked vibrant that much anymore. But i still plan on fixing it in the near future when somebody comes up with a solution that is free of charge.

I sent mine to them for a broken USB port, I just wiped beforehand just in-case (even though I left a backup). If I can't fix something myself, it's better to pay a little for it, than to have to buy a new phone.

True but the problem is that i can't wipe the internal storage because i don't have access to it. I can only wipe the external sd...but why do that when you can simply remove it.

Im afraid of rooting Vibrant. I rooted my Mt3g with ease. But this.

I rooted the MT3G with ease. And the flashing of Roms and stuff is easy for Mt3g. But it seems hard for the Vibrant. I don't use abd or anything cause frankly. I don't know how. Can you guys maybe give me suggestions?

Read, understand, experiment. Ppl only get their troubles or "panic" because they dont have anything setup & dont know how to get them selves out it. If you dont want to learn our try to use the tools that are available then just wait till the one-click ROMS or CM comes out.
If you want to take the time to learn then I would suggest to head over to the vibrant "bible".
Easiest way is just to down load one click lag fix from market there is a root option there. Or it really was easy this oas my first android phone. Download the update filter put it in the internal sd and rebooted using hold vol + vol- and power. And installed from there no problem.
Just check out the stickied thread about vibrant tips and tricks

There is also a "One Click Lag Fix" that you can download here, it takes like 20 seconds to root this phone, you shouldn't be scared

I wondered about rooting too at first, but as it turns out it's very easy. I've read several comments on how easy it is to root the Vibrant compared to Android phones back in the olden days.
And if you want to flash a neat ROM, go check out Bionix.

I just got this phone 2 days ago (my first smartphone ever!) and I've flashed it probably 6 or 7 times now...
Important advice: Right now, once you've installed Clockwork ROM Manager, make a backup of your ROM! I really wish I'd done this, just a near-stock, untouched backup (yes every thread post starts with "make a backup!" but I was stupid)
Now for some encouragement: If I, with zero knowledge of Android/rooting/ROMs/build.prop files/Clockwork/adb/Odin before Sunday at 4 pm, managed to F with this phone as much as I have and not even come close to bricking it, you'll be *golden* just flashing it with a well-known ROM.
Flashing ROMs is super easy with Clockwork. It's like... 3 or 4 clicks easy.
Right now I'm running Bionix and really enjoying it. You might check it out while we all wait for Cyanogenmod to come out for Vibrant.
TL;DR: I've been pushing files, flashing broken ROMs, all sorts of fun stuff and my phone is still pluggin' away. I wouldn't worry too much about bricking. Just read the threads, search the Googles, and ask for help if you get really stuck. And backup.
Make sure you check out Eugene323's stuff as well. He puts out some incredible work.

I had more problems with my MT3G than I did with this phone. It took a day to root and rom the MT3G since I have the one with the head phone jack (stupid gold card crap).
Do what everyone has suggested. DL the One Click Lag Fix and touch the option to root. I'm running the Bionix 1.3 and it's good.

[Q] Bricked my phone little help please

ok so i was running SH 3.9.1 and decided to go back to stock so i odined back to jfd and then tried to update with kies and now my phone will not even turn on anyone have any clue on what i need to do or if there is anything i can do
a)did you flash gingerbread bootloaders? If you so and you didn't flash back the froyo bootloaders before using keis your probally f***** up your phone. Need a jtag
b)if you didn't flash any bootloaders just call tmobile and tell them keis f***ed up your phone
c)you could just lie to tmobile and tell them keis f***ed up your phone
seconded... (holds up blank phone)
same issues here, odined JFD, all was working fine, went to update via Kies, and it completed, rebooted, and did not come up after waiting over a half hour
no lights, can't get to download or recovery modes..
Yes you need a jtag, I recently had the same problem. PM connexion2005 and he can hook you up for $50.

lol yeah i see that now and funny thing is i was actually coming from your rom EB.
The "Kies" effed up my phone has got to be the #1 over used excuse. Probably used more often then it actually does, but IT DOES! so its easy to get by with. I'd have to imagine in this situation its bootloader related. People should honestly fess up when they bork up their own device and pay the fee to get it jtaged. Just my 2cents.
As the old Chinese proverb goes:
"You break, You buy!"
I agree with you on that and it probably was my fault it messed up but im also broke otherwise i would of gone that route
one of these days there gonna catch on
Wow..... you guys.... bootloaders for vibrant are backward compatible..... even still.... you could have built a custom jig for $1.19, some scotch tape, and an old car charger. read the stickies yo.... I've had bad bootloader flashes at least 20 times now with odin and my cheap little jig has me back in dl mode in seconds.

Oh yea there is definitely a worse step than that screen. It's called NOTHING. Literally your phone is worthless at that point without a good JTAG technician. I see it over 100 times a month... . Not trying to be a smarty just letting you know that there are scenarios in which the JIG is worthless and you will need someone to JTAG there phone. Please remember me if it happens to you as I can fix that although I would never wish it upon you...

friend bricked his s3.....

Hello all, I was walking my friend through rooting his phone over Google talk. He rooted all went well a few days later he wanted to Rom it. He made a mistake and flashed the international omega Rom on his US ATT samsungi747. His phone is now dead. No way to get into recovery or download mode. Just dead. Bricked. What can I do to help him? As I am partially responsible cause I was helping him. I did not know much about the Rom he was flashing.
I was reading about a possible fix with a jig but can not find a jig for.the Samsung i747.
Please any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

A compatible jig may be your only solution if you can't get into download mode manually. A jig would force the phone into download mode, once in download mode you'd be able to flash the stock AT&T firmware through Odin.

If you didnt know a rom could brick a phone you shouldnt be flashing period. Theres always ALWAYS bold letters that says this may brick your phone an or we are not responsible if this breaks your phone... no one with there first android should be flashing till they know android smoothly... *sigh*
Usually 90% of the time your always able to get into recovery mode. From what I've read this only happens when flashing the omega Rom. People make mistakes.
I've rooted and rom'd 100s of phones, and never not been able to get back to recovery.

If ppl read things 95% of there questions would be answered. The other 5% could be found by google
I understand telling him to read. And he did so for about a week. He succesfully used odin to root his phone. A few days later he said he wanted to Rom, and asked me how to do a proper back up with titanium backup. I ran him through the backup procedure.
I mean I totally thought that if he made it through the rooting procedure that he was good to go. Rom'ing has always been to me something fairly easy, and if something went haywire, just boot to recovery.
I've had people ask for help that flashed an incomplete or corrupted download, but have always been able to at least power the phone on, or at the very least have it recongnized in adb.
I have been reading and googling about a fix, but information seems minimal on this current circumstance. So I reached out to the community for advice.

Download mode would indicate that the device is able to connect, as the USB drivers, or at least a portion of them, are contained in the download mode program.
But if the data is corrupted or missing, due to software or hardware issues, then the process would fail.
So you get "no " COM " detection at all ??
If not ...it's a JTAG fix most likely ....g

i agree that if you can get into download mode, then youre good. if the pc doesnt see it, then its most likely a driver issue. even if you have "a" driver specifically for it, there may be a different one that you would need for it to be seen in download mode. Hard brick is when the phone wont turn on or its just black and there is no download mode and no recovery mode. download mode is where its at! dont mean to get off topic.........Let us know how the jtag goes!

[Q]

Hello,
I have the following problem and I'm wondering if it is solvable:
My Galaxy S2 (actually from a friend) was rooted and working fine on ICS.
Then I wanted to install a custom rom (Resurrection Remix 3.0.9 Jelly Bean).
It is not my first time doing this as I've did it a multiple times on my own S2.
The same ROM is working fine on my own S2.
Somewhere around 50% of installation, the phone turned itself off.
We did make sure that the battery was fully charged before proceeding with the installation.
Now I cannot Start it.
Can't enter Recovery Mode.
Can't enter Download Mode.
The screen just remains black as if there is no battery in it.
Swapped battery, but still same issue.
It doesn't even show the charging animation when power cable is plugged in.
I have ordered a USB JIG to put it in Download Mode from MobileTechVideos.com but I don't think this will work because there is no sign of life.
It is obviously hard bricked.
What could I do to fix this problem?
Thank you
Sad to say but you have to avail JTAG services to sort this out

Which method did you use? Also, do you have your firmware/baseband/version of ICS the phone was running when this happened? If its the emmc brickbug, dont waste your money on a jig or JTAG. Neither will be of any use.

I don't know the exact baseband version.
The last three charachters were LQ6.
If I remember correctly it was I9100XXLQ6
What exactly is the emmc brickbug?
Is there a solution for this one?

Ah.. ICS 4.0.4?

There's no solution. Insert he battery and wait for a bit. If it starts to heat up a lot around the camera, I'm sorry to say the phone is utterly useless from now on. Only a motherboard replacement will help.

Thank you HAXTREME.
That's not very good news but at least I know now.
btw yes, it was ICS 4.0.4
I've rooted a couple of android phones without any trouble.
I honestly didn't know that this bug existed even though I searched on the net for the risks before I started it.
I guess Samsung will not fix this under warranty?

Thats why everyone keeps screaming to read up before rooting, mate. Its kinda hard to miss, every third thread seems to have a mention of it. And a sticky in the general section.
Anywho, whats done is done. Bad luck I guess. If you're under warranty, theres hope yet. You can take it to them saying it randomly died out and you have no idea how or why. Since the motherboard is toast, they have no way of figuring out you rooted it (or tried to). Say it happened when you kept it to charge or something. You could get lucky. :fingers-crossed:
Use the thanks button instead of typing out a post.
Hope it works out. Good luck. :good:
If your still under warrenty they usually repair it for you, had mine repaired recently. they will replace the motherboard. Good Luck
